Lizzie Armitstead takes back the Women’s World Tour leader’s jersey after another Italian win

It was the third weekend in a row with UCI Women’s WorldTour action on the calendar. After last weekend’s races in Holland, the peloton returned to Italy for the Trofeo Alfredo Binda today. A course for the climbers, Trofeo Binda had been a World Cup event for several years and was won by Lizzie Armitstead (Boels-Dolmans), Emma Johansson (Wiggle High5) and Elisa Longo Borghini (Wiggle High5) in the past three years.
The hometown favourite, Longo Borghini, would very much have liked to repeat her win of 2013, but unfortunately had to withdraw due to illness. Instead it was last year’s winner, Lizzie Armitstead, who defended her win and earned herself another Women’s WorldTour victory. She takes back the leader’s jersey from Anna van der Breggen, and this win makes it three-for-three for the dominating Boels-Dolman team.
The WorldTour standings before the race
The second round of the Women’s WorldTour took place in the Ronde van Drenthe last weekend and it turned out to be a real Dutch party, with the win going to Chantal Blaak (Boels-Dolmans) , Anna van der Breggen (Rabo-Liv) taking over the UCIWWT leader’s jersey after Armitstead (Boels-Dolmans) gave up feeling sick, and Floortje Mackaij (Liv-Plantur) the new leader in the young rider classification.
The differences were still small, with Van der Breggen only 10 points ahead of the Boels-Dolmans duo Blaak and Armitstead in the UCIWWT classification.
With these positions in the overall classification, Boels-Dolmans and Rabo-Liv were expected to be the ones making the race hard today , both having their eyes on the Women’s WorldTour leader’s jersey — Rabo-Liv trying to defend it, Boels-Dolmans attempting to get it back .
How the race went down:
In addition to Longo Boghini, other notable withdrawals for today where Evelyn Stevens (Boels Dolman’s), who was also ill, and Team Liv-Plantur’s Riejanne Markus crashed during the recon ride yesterday and suffered some injuries to her face.
Cycling Sport Promotion (the organisers behind Trofeo Alfredo Binda) offered an extensive live ticker as well as live images from the finish line. So while we’re anxiously waiting for the first UCI Women’s WorldTour race to be completely livestreamed, like some of the World Cup races last year, we are thankful to CSP and hope other Women’s WorldTour race organisers, that don’t have the financial means to offer a full livestream, will look to them as an example.
The Trofeo Alfredo Binda always finishes in Cittiglio, but uses a different route to get there every year. Today, the peloton started in Garivate for a 15 kilometer build up to a long lap with both the Cunardo and Orino climb in it, followed by four local laps with the Orino climb again. QOM points were awarded at the top of the Cunardo climb and the four Orino climbs in the local laps, but this prize isn’t part of the Women’s WorldTour.
Each organisation can decide whether to include a mountain or sprint classification in their race and the Trofeo Binda had both this year.
The start shot in Garivate
Emilia Fahlin (Alé Cipollini) was the first to attack and was given around 18 seconds by the peloton. There’s a saying for this in the Dutch (amateur) cycling scene: the rider that attacks right from the start is the one who “goes for the Pink Bear classification” and Fahlin did this today. She was caught a short five minutes later. You have to give her credits for trying though, and for representing an Italian team in this Italian race.
Within the first 25 kilometers, the first intermediate sprint was set at Cuveglio and was won by Italian rider Simone Frapporti (Team Hitec). Because Rabo-Liv was pushing the tempo really hard at the front in defense of Anna van der Breggen’s leader’s jersey, no one was able to get away after Fahlin. It was also because of these team efforts that Rabo-Liv’s Thalita de Jong was able to win the second intermediate sprint.
In the Trofeo Binda, the climbs are longer than in the Ronde van Drenthe last weekend, where QOM points were up for grabs at the top of the VAM-berg, so today the points would go to ‘real’ climbers. Cervélo-Bigla’s Ashleigh Moolman took the first points at the top of the Cunardo climb, showing good legs for today.
After the climbs, the situation on the road changed constantly with groups splintering and regrouping. Eventually, a group of around 30 women eventually distanced themselves, later splitting in two equal groups, each with 15 seconds to the group behind. Ahead of them a two-person break, consisting of Carmen Small (Cervélo-Bigla) and Ann-Sophie Duyck (Topsport-Vlaanderen), managed to ride away off the front.
Both excellent time triallists, it was an interesting breakaway and especially beneficial to race favourite Moolman. With a teammate in the break, it gave her a luxury position in the chase group.
The circuits
Small and Duyck crossed the finish line 1’12” ahead of the peloton, commencing their first circuit lap. They were followed by a compact peloton, that had all come back together between the descent of the Orino and the finish line. When it looked like the peloton was closing in on the lead duo, Small decided to leave Duyck behind. Duyck was caught by the peloton just before the top of the Orino in the first circuit lap, at which point Small still had 25 seconds and took the QOM points. The seconds faded away towards the third crossing of the finish line though and the peloton was all together when the cameras caught the third crossing at the finish.
Suddenly, there were reports of a big crash, just outside the reach of the camera at the finish line. Megan Guarnier (Boels-Dolmans) was caught up in it as was Van der Breggen. Although Van der Breggen had teammate De Jong to bring her back, she had to have a bike change as well, not making it an easy lap for the Women’s WorldTour leader. Both Van der Breggen and Guarnier were able to get back to the bunch but it had cost them some energy.
The second QOM on the Orino climb went to Jolanda Neff (Servetto Footon), the Swiss mountainbiker who is always a force to be reckoned with. She was in the group of six riders that made the winning move on the penultimate climb up the Orino in 2015.
The same manoeuvre was performed at the exact same place this year. Eight riders got away on the second to last climb up the Orino, interestingly only Moolman of the favourites missing out. The group consisted of Armitstead and Guarnier (Boels-Dolmans), Van der Breggen and Niewiadoma (Rabo-Liv), Johansson (Wiggle High5), Alena Amialiusik (Canyon-SRAM), Neff (Servetto Footon) and Annemiek van Vleuten (Orica-AIS). Johansson took the QOM points on the top of the climb.
At 20 kilometers to go, the gap was over a minute, so it really was the winning move again. Neff decided the break wasn’t going fast enough though, leaving her seven companions behind in the final lap and quickly opening up the gap to 15 seconds. While Tiffany Cromwell (Canyon-SRAM) tried to escape the bunch, getting herself into a chasse patate , Neff’s advantage only grew.
Crossing the top of the Orino climb solo for the final time, Neff took the full QOM points again. In the chase group Van Vleuten got dropped when the tempo increased in an effort to get Neff back. It was looking promising for Neff until Armitstead attacked in the final five kilometers.
When Armitstead reached Neff, their gap had diminished to only 5 seconds as they entered the final kilometer. The exciting finale finished with the world champion earning yet another win for Boels-Dolmans. Armitstead’s teammate, Guarnier, was able to reach Neff just in time to finish second, leaving Neff to settle with third – still a phenomenal performance by the mountainbiker in this WorldTour road race.
Van der Breggen crossed the finish line in sixth, behind Johansson and Amialiusik. The leader’s jersey went back to Armitstead while Niewiadoma remains the leader in the young rider classification.
Be sure to come back tomorrow for a full photo gallery with photo’s from the fantastic Vélofocus duo.

2023 Women’s WorldTour Pro Cycling Team Kits & Jerseys

Each year teams decide to either update their jerseys and team kit or stick with something very close to the previous year’s design. For some, new sponsors and new team names mean new jersey designs are needed out of necessity. Team jersey colour patterns change and adapt, famously the 2021 season was the year of the pastel rainbow gradient. With so many teams choosing a similar design, Continental teams AWOL O’Shea and Andy Schleck Cycles-CP NVST-Immo Losch were forced to change theirs. For the latter team, they had already produced the kit and ended up having to sell it off, successfully, within only a few days as a result of the issues.
Table of Contents
Already in 2023, we are seeing the beginnings of a trend. It looks like it’s going to be a blue year in the Women’s WorldTour peloton. Even UAE Team ADQ who has kept mostly the same design has managed to blueify their kit by like 20%. Fenix-Deceuninck, freshly promoted to the Women’s WorldTour for 2023 has changed its naming sponsors and gone for a very blue look as well. Israel-Premier Tech Roland (Roland Cogeas Edelweiss in 2022) has gone from red to blue. Trek Segafredo has gone from mostly white to mostly sky blue with a fun design taking up all of the back of the jersey. So far, it’s only really Liv Racing TeqFind (who replaced Xstra with another brand from the same group in TeqFind) who has avoided blue. They keep their purple floral jersey from the last 2 seasons.

UCI Women's WorldTour: great racing in Spain
The events on the UCI Women’s WorldTour calendar this month have provided great reasons to visit Spain, from south to north, to witness stunning performances on beautiful roads and over iconic summits. Three stage races were contested in recent weeks, beginning with the new La Vuelta España Femenina, followed by the intense Itzulia Women, before the final Iberian battles on the classic Vuelta a Burgos Feminas.
These events across Spain crowned three overall winners: rainbow icon Annemiek van Vleuten (Movistar Team Women) won La Vuelta España Femenina, Swiss rider Marlen Reusser (Team SD Worx) added to her increasingly impressive list of victories by winning her first stage race at the Itzulia Women, and Demi Vollering (Team SD Worx) conquered the historic Burgos venue.
During the 14 days of competitions, other stars impressed, such as the fast Dutch riders Marianne Vos (Team Jumbo-Visma), Charlotte Kool (Team DSM) and Lorena Wiebes (Team SD Worx), as well as the Italian pocket climber Gaia Realini (Trek-Segafredo).
Vuelta España Femenina: Van Vleuten and Vollering battling it out
After her extraordinary hat-trick of winning the Amstel Gold Race Ladies Edition, the Flèche Wallonne Féminine and Liège-Bastogne-Liège Femmes, Demi Vollering recognised that claiming these victories on Van Vleuten’s home ground had a special meaning, just before her older combatant retires at the end of 2023. The two Dutch climbers have been battling for the past few seasons and, at 26 years old, Vollering was determined to show that she has what it takes to win against her rival.
At La Vuelta EspañaFemenina, their battle was revived at the top of the summit. Vollering first moved to the overall lead when she narrowly beat Van Vleuten at the Mirador de Peñas Llanas. The next day, the race got more intense on the road to Laredo, where Realini took her first UCI Women’s WorldTour victory, while Van Vleuten powered to the red leader jersey. After having won “La Roja" in the last two editions (previously held during the last week of the men’s Vuelta Ciclista a España), she was able to win again despite Vollering’s attack at the mythical Lagos de Covadonga.
🔥 𝐁𝐄𝐒𝐓 𝐎𝐅 #LaVueltaFemenina by @CarrefourES 🔥 pic.twitter.com/jTv208uL8P — La Vuelta Femenina by Carrefour.es (@LaVueltaFem) May 9, 2023
Vollering continued to win two stages of the Itzulia Women and took second place overall before winning the Vuelta a Burgos Feminas, with two more stage wins. Van Vleuten finished 5th in the Basque Country and didn’t race in Burgos. Anticipation is high for their next battle and for the fight for the yellow jersey in the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift!
Itzulia Women: Reusser can do it all
Marlen Reusser is a solid member of the SD Worx team: a strong rider whose skills quickly became apparent in the time trials and she proved to very good at controlling the peloton in various race situations. Her qualities recently led to her first victory in a classic (Gent-Wevelgem in Flanders Fields) and have now led to her first success in a stage race, in the Itzulia Women.
After the first two stage wins by Vollering, the Dutch rider seemed to be in prime position to repeat her Basque triple from 2022... But on day three, a very small group broke away on the climbs and the Dutch leader decided to open the door for her Swiss team-mate, who attacked once, then twice, before creating a gap of more than two and a half minutes to win the stage and the overall victory.
“We could just have stayed where we were”, Reusser said. “We could have tried to just defend, but we said no, we want to race aggressively and be the ones to push the other teams to act.”
Vos and Wiebes impressive list of wins
Marianne Vos has collected so many victories across all types of terrain and bikes (road, cyclo-cross, track, mountain bike, gravel…) that she has probably lost track of how many races she has won.
She has claimed 13 Elite rainbow jerseys (and two more as Junior), countless distinctive jerseys as European or National Champion, stage race leader, queen of the mountains, winner of points classification… And this year she conquered the red leader jersey for the first time in La Vuelta EspañaFemenina, where she also won the opening time trial with her team, two individual stage wins and the points classification!
On the demanding roads of the Spanish race, Charlotte Kool (Team DSM) also managed to win the second stage. And a few weeks later, Lorena Wiebes won twice on the roads of Burgos. The Dutch sprinter already has 65 professional wins at an age of 24. Can she compete with Vos’ extraordinary record?
🇪🇸 #LaVueltaFemenina What a week @marianne_vos had! 🤩 🥇 TTT win and two stage victories. 🔴 Riding in the leader's jersey for three days. 🏆 Winning the points classification. pic.twitter.com/DoFMz2yVrd — Team Jumbo-Visma Women (@JumboVismaWomen) May 7, 2023

Guide to the WorldTour
About the uci women's worldtour.
‘Stages’, ‘seasons’, ‘elite’, ‘Classique’… It all sounds a bit serious, doesn’t it? Well, fear not – the RideLondon Classique, part of the UCI Women’s WorldTour, is nothing to shy away from! Rather, it’s an amazing spectacle that displays women’s cycling at its best, for everyone to watch and enjoy – no matter what your background in the sport. Let us give you the low-down…
What is it?
Let’s start with basics – what even is the UCI Women’s WorldTour? Founded in 2016, the UCI Women’s WorldTour is a collection of the highest level of elite road races in the world and the new RideLondon Classique is one of them! The races are split between one-day races and stage races:
- One-day races As the name suggests, one-day races involve one route, on one single day, where the first person across the line wins! (Football fans, think the knockout rounds of a cup competition – winner takes all.)
- Stage races Also known as tours, stage races take place across multiple days – anywhere from three days to three weeks. A race takes place every day within that period (bar rest days), with a winner crowned every day. But, the overall winner of the tour is the rider who has the quickest accumulative time across all the stages – similar to a domestic league in other sports with the accumulation of points! Are you still with us? OK – great! The races within the tour are called ‘Stages’ and the overall victory is referred to as the ‘General Classification’, or simply the ‘Overall’. Some riders will ride specifically with the General Classification in mind, while others will just be on the hunt for Stage wins and less concerned about performing well on all the days.
Both types of races can be great fun to watch, with stage races having multiple storylines and one-day races being a straight shoot-out first to the finish. Every rider will accumulate UCI WorldTour points in each race they participate in, depending on where they finish. The leader of UCI WorldTour will wear a leader’s jersey – so look out for that!
Where does the Ford RideLondon Classique fit in?
We know the Ford RideLondon Classique is an integral part of the UCI Women’s WorldTour calendar. But where does it slot into the women’s pro race schedule?
The 2024 UCI Women’s WorldTour begins in January with the Santos Tour Down Under and the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race. It then moves to the United Arab Emirates for the UAE Tour in February ahead of the European spring one-day race season, which includes Classics such as Omloop het Nieuwsblad, Strade Bianche, Tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix Femmes, Amstel Gold Race Ladies Edition, La Fleche Wallonne Feminine and Liege-Bastogne-Liege Femmes.
The stage racing season then begins in earnest in May with three races in Spain, including the La Vuelta Espana Femenina by Carrefour.es, before the world’s best riders come to the UK for the Ford RideLondon Classique (24-26 May).
The Classique is the only UCI Women’s WorldTour event in the UK in 2024, and the riders will have two big races just around the corner following its conclusion on May 26, with the Grand Tour pairing of the Giro d’Italia Donne and Tour de France Femmes.
The Olympic Games in Paris in August will be a target for many of the elite peloton in 2024 before the closing two months of the season.
The WorldTour concludes in China in October with the Tour of Chongming Island and Tour of Guangxi.
You can view the calendar for the 2024 UCI Women’s WorldTour and 2024 UCI WorldTour on the UCI website here .
A brief history of the Classique
The Ford RideLondon Classique has been a key part of RideLondon since the festival launched in 2013 as a legacy event from the London 2012 Olympic Games. The Classique started life as a one-day race held each year on a Saturday evening in London, taking in a 5.5km circuit that started and finished on The Mall, and was added to the inaugural UCI Women’s WorldTour calendar in 2016.
The first RideLondon Classique in 2013 was won by decorated British track and road cycling legend Laura Kenny (need we say more?) and has continued to grow as a pro cycling spectacle over subsequent years.
Dutch sprinter Kirsten Wild secured wins in both 2016 and 2018 while other winners include Giorgia Bronzini (ITA, 2014), Barbara Guarischi (ITA, 2015), Coryn Labecki (USA, 2017) and Lorena Wiebes (NED, 2019).
In 2022 – after being a casualty to Covid restrictions in both 2020 and 2021 – the RideLondon Classique returned in a new three-day stage format. Wiebes, the 2019 champion, returned and swept all before her, winning all three stages and the overall general classification.

Neve takes 2nd in uae tour and now leads the world tour rankings.
CANYON//SRAM Racing finished a remarkable UAE Tour Women today, with Neve Bradbury taking home second place in the final general classification. Bradbury also won Best Young Rider and moved into the leader jersey in both the Elite and U23 Women World Tour classifications. Ricarda Bauernfeind took tenth place overall, and Agnieszka Skalniak-Sójka sprinted to eighth place in the final stage. CANYON//SRAM Racing won the best team classification and is now leading the 2024 Women’s World Tour rankings.
A four-rider breakaway controlled the final 105km stage, but as the kilometres to the finish line ticked down, the needle swung in favour of the leaders. Amber Kraak (FDJ) attacked her breakaway companions with five kilometres remaining and went solo to hold off the chasing peloton by a matter of metres in a dramatic finish. Agnieszka had her best sprint of the tour after twice finishing just outside the top ten to take eighth place today in Abu Dhabi Breakwater, with Neve finishing safely in the bunch.
RIDER REACTIONS:
Neve Bradbury: “It’s really special to get second on the general classification and win the best young rider jersey. I knew that I had good legs coming to the tour but to finish it off and get on the GC podium is an achievement. I’m happy I can get a result for the team after all of my teammates’ work and performance throughout the tour and the fact we’ve been riding well together. This is great for my confidence and ours as a team.”
“After winning Zwift Academy in 2020, I leapt into the pro peloton, and it’s been quite a journey over the last four years. I’m sitting here now in the UCI World Tour leader’s jersey, and I couldn’t be more stoked. It’s a really special feeling to be leading the UCI World Tour. I didn’t realise I was so close until after yesterday. I didn’t think coming into this tour that it was something I would be coming away with. I was just focused on doing the best I could each day, so I feel like this is a bonus.”
“We were confident after yesterday’s race that we could bring home these results, but we also knew we had to finish today safely, so we kept our focus on the stage.”
“So far, our team has had a strong start to the season, including off-road with Zoe (Bäckstedt) winning the cyclo-cross world champs and what our team could do in the races in Australia. It’s a solid start that we can continue building on into the season.”
Agnieszka Skalniak-Sójka: “After two times getting sixteenth place, I’m really happy to get a top ten on the last stage today. It’s difficult to sprint against sprinters with such a high top speed. I improved each day, and I always had a lot of support from my teammates and Tiffany, the last rider, leaving me in the best position.”
“I’m proud of how Neve and Ricarda climbed yesterday and how our young squad was motivated to race. We had a great Sport Director, Adam (Szabó), who gave us a lot of confidence each day and supported us. I think we did a lot of good steps that will help us in the next part of the season.”
Ricarda Bauernfeind: “We had great teamwork and morale during the tour. We improved each day, and everyone was committed to the goals. Having an experienced rider like Tiffany with us who took leadership and especially guided us through the key race situations each day was helpful.”
“Personally, I was a bit disappointed after yesterday’s queen stage, but I learned many things from the climb, and overall, this stage race gave me more experience in flat stages and dealing with the wind. That will be helpful for the rest of the season. A top ten in GC for me is a good starting point.”
“After yesterday’s stage, we talked in our race meeting and recognised how many jerseys Neve could win—white, blue, purple! It was definitely a big motivation boost for today’s stage. We enjoyed racing together with such a great team.”
NEXT RACES:
CANYON//SRAM Racing continue the stage races with Setmana Ciclista Volta Feminina de la Comunitat Valenciana from 15 to 18 February. The team’s roster for the four-day stage race will be Elise Chabbey, Selam Gerefiel, Anastasiya Kolesava, Alex Morrice, Antonia Niedermaier, and Kasia Niewiadoma.

Speaking seconds after the stage finish, the stage winner and Red Jersey Lorena Wiebes said: “It feels great to already win stage 1. It was chaos before the final because of the long straight before the last corner, but I got a very good lead out. We planned to sprint on the right side knowing the wind was blowing from the left. It’s great to have the world champion for the lead out. Lotte [Kopecky] love working for each other. I would have preferred to sprint against Charlotte Kool like last year because I would have known more where to position myself. At the difference of last year, I’m the race leader after stage 1. It means the pressure will be more on us tomorrow but we are ready for that”.

Breaking news, chilling hamas video of female israeli soldiers on oct. 7 is a ‘wakeup call to the world,’ dad says.

The harrowing new video of Hamas terrorists taunting five female Israeli soldiers with rape before abducting them to Gaza should serve as a “wake up call to the world” to end the hostages’ nightmare, the father of one of the young women says.
Shlomi Berger said he was shocked at the footage from a Hamas bodycam showing his bloodied daughter Agam Berger, 19, and four other soldiers handcuffed in their pajamas and surrounded by dozens of Hamas terrorists who took over the Nahal Oz base in southern Israeli.
“ This is a wakeup call to the world: look what we’re dealing with,” Shlomi told The Post. “You saw how many terrorists were in that video.
“You only see three minutes, but we know that they sat in the same place for two or three hours, and in front of their eyes they saw their friends that were murdered, on the floor,” he added.
Berger, who watched the video in April and joined other hostage families in approving its release on Wednesday, said it was evident just how terrified his daughter and the other young women were by the terrorists, especially after they were threatened with rape.
“When they said, ‘You are pretty,’ and ‘I can get you pregnant,’ I don’t know what a young girl who is hearing this is thinking,” the heartbroken father said.
“It’s crazy as a father that my girl is in that situation and I can’t help her. I can’t do anything to help her.”
In the sickening video, Hamas terrorists could be heard gloating and announcing their apparent plans to sexually assault the soldiers.
“Here are the girls who can get pregnant,” one of the gunmen said.
“You’re so beautiful.”
While Berger lamented the horrific circumstances his daughter was in, he said his primary goal for making the video public was to push Israeli leaders back into the negotiating table to hash out a deal with Hamas that would finally see Agam and the rest of the captives freed after more than seven months in Gaza.
“We, the families, decided to give the video out today, and we did it because we feel and we see that there is no negotiation and everything is stuck and nothing is moving,” Shlomi said.
“And I don’t know, in this position, when I would see my daughter,” he added. “So we thought about it and decided this was the time to get it out because everybody should wake up, here, in Israel, and also the world.
“I think this is the time to stop trying things that won’t work,” he said of his nation’s current efforts to secure the hostages.
Along with Agam, the Hostages and Missing Families Forum identified the female soldiers taken captive in the video as Liri Albag, Karina Ariev, Daniella Gilboa and Naama Levy.
The young women were performing their compulsory military service stationed at the Nahal Oz surveillance base, which is less than 1,000 yards from the Gaza Strip.
Hamas terrorists stormed the base and slaughtered 15 soldiers and took six hostage on Oct. 7, according to The Times of Israel.
Some 1,200 people were killed and more than 250 taken hostage in the attack on southern Israel.
The sickening video shows the women injured and bloodied in the aftermath the Nahal Oz base attack, with the soldiers threatened by angry Hamas gunmen who ignored their pleas and rushed them into a vehicle bound for Gaza amid heavy gunfire.
Berger was seen bleeding profusely from her mouth, with the blood dripping down her chin and staining her white pajama pants.
“The video is a damning testament to the nation’s failure to bring home the hostages, who have been forsaken for 229 days,” the group said in a statement urging that the hostage exchange talks with Hamas resume.
“The Israeli government must not waste even one more moment — it must return to the negotiating table today!”

Gianna Clemente Wins AJGA Portion of Mizuho Americas Open
Kerr tops leaderboard after first round of lpga senior championship.
- Mizuho Americas Open
- Tournament News
JERSEY CITY, N.J. — Playing in the final group alongside Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings No. 1 Nelly Korda and five-time LPGA Tour winner Hannah Green, 16-year-old Gianna Clemente hung tough in the final round of the Mizuho Americas Open, winning the modified Stableford AJGA competition with a total of 149 points.
She began the day with a two-point lead over defending AJGA champion Yana Wilson, and Clemente parred her first seven holes of the day to earn 14 points, then sitting at 127 points with 10 holes to play. She made her first final-round birdie on the par-5 8th hole, an effort that earned her three more points in the Stableford event, and she parred the ninth hole to turn with 132 total points.
Clemente birdied again on the par-5 10th hole, parring the 11th before making her first mistake on No. 12, double-bogeying the par 4 to not earn any points for the first time since her first hole on Thursday at Liberty National. She steadied herself with pars on 13 and 14, picking up another birdie on the par-4 15th hole to have 144 points with three holes to play.
The teenager parred 16 and then bogeyed 17, ultimately needing a bogey or better to avoid a playoff with Wilson and Anna Huang, who both finished with 147 points. After finding the green in two and running her birdie effort well by, Clemente wound up burying her resulting par putt, earning her first AJGA victory since the 2023 Girl’s Junior PGA Championship.
“(This one ranks) very high,” said Clemente. “Last year, I definitely didn't play the way I wanted to, but this is just such a beautiful place and such a special event. I think that the way the event is run, the people here, obviously getting to play alongside the pros, it doesn't get much better than that. To be able to win at a place like this and event like this, it's really, really special.”
One of the highlights of the Mizuho Americas Open is the opportunity the AJGA participants have to compete alongside the world’s top professional talent over the weekend at Liberty National Golf Club. For Clemente, getting to tee it up in the final round with two of the hottest players on the LPGA Tour this season was an experience she will never forget and taught her lessons that she’ll look to apply to her own game when she finds herself in contention again down the line.
“I think just watching them and their composure,” Clemente said of what she learned from Green and Korda. “Obviously, they're pretty much in the same situation that I am, just on a bigger stage. Both were very, very close, and even though I wasn't playing with my playing competitors, I knew it was really close. To watch them stay composed and patient, which is what I was trying to do as well, I think watching them do that was really cool.”
LPGA Tour fans are more than familiar with Clemente, having not only watched her compete at last year’s Mizuho Americas Open but also in 2022 at the three events for which she Monday qualified as a 14-year-old – the CPKC Women’s Open, the Dana Open and the Kroger Queen City Championship presented by P&G. She also played in the 2023 CPKC Women’s Open and has teed it up in two Epson Tour events, the 2022 Twin Bridges Championship and the 2023 Florida’s Natural Charity Classic.
Luckily, fans of Clemente’s won’t have to wait very long to watch her play in another LPGA Tour tournament, as the 16-year-old is scheduled to tee it up in the ShopRite LPGA Classic presented by Acer in Atlantic City, N.J., in just a few weeks’ time. She has yet to make a cut in any of the LPGA Tour events in which she has competed, and that’s a goal that Clemente will be looking to accomplish at the Seaview, Bay Course starting on June 7 as she works to carry this momentum forward.
Clemente will surely be leaning on what she gleaned from her victory at the Mizuho Americas Open as she chases that made cut down next month in the Garden State. But Clemente will also be implementing the lessons she learned from her near-miss at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur as she fights for a weekend spot at the ShopRite LPGA Classic, something that we’ve also heard Nelly Korda talk about throughout the 2024 season.
“I think blocking a little bit of (the attention) out just comes with experience,” said Clemente. “At Augusta, the crowds were very loud and very close to you as well. Being in that final group I think just taught me a little bit of how to block it out even more. It's good when the crowds are embracing you and want to see you win and things like that. It's good when it's a positive on the positive side, but sometimes you do have to block it out. I think it just comes with experience.”

Tour de France jerseys to be provided by Santini
ASO announces five-year partnership with Italian brand to supply leaders jerseys from 2022
Amaury Sport Organization, the company behind the Tour de France , has announced Santini as a new official partner to the race. As of 2022, the Italian brand will supply all official jerseys for the Tour de France leaders, as well as the leaders of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, and the amateur riders competing in the L’Étape du Tour, in a deal that will extend through to 2027. The brand will also produce official replica jerseys that will be on sale to the public.
The move marks an end to a decade-long spell in which Le Coq Sportif has supplied the leaders jerseys after the French brand took over from Nike ahead of the 2012 Tour.
“Signing this agreement was a hugely emotional experience for us and we are genuinely thrilled to announce this partnership with the Tour de France,” says Monica Santini, CEO of Santini Cycling Wear. “It marks the continuation of a relationship with ASO, begun with the sponsorship of La Vuelta and followed on with the Deutschland Tour. Now we have also added the most important race on the international cycling calendar to our tally.”
- Best cycling jerseys : Ride in comfort no matter the weather
The announcement comes in addition to Santini's existing agreements with the UCI and UEC, in which the brand supplies the podium jerseys for the rainbow and European champions. The Italian brand has also supplied the leaders jerseys for the Vuelta a España since 2016, in a deal that was penned for five years. It's unconfirmed whether that agreement will continue.
Yann Le Moenner, CEO of ASO, said: “We are glad and proud to welcome Santini on the Tour de France. A new chapter has opened itself for the leader jerseys of La Grande Boucle thanks to this historic brand of cycling equipment. It will offer high-performance products with creative designs to both the elite of world cycling and the regular amateur riders who will once again be present on all the events organized by ASO.”
Founded in 1965 by Pietro Santini, the Italian brand comes with a rich heritage and race history, starting with its official UCI World Champion and World Cup leader’s jerseys back in 1988, and the creation of a long-lasting relationship with the Giro d’Italia and Maglia Rosa five years later. Since then Santini has formed a multitude of high-profile partnerships and collaborations, with the likes of Lizzie Deignan, the Australian National Cycling Team, La Vuelta, Trek-Segafredo, and the Tour de Suisse. Now with the announcement of this five-year partnership, it adds the Tour de France to this list.
