Yes announce 50th anniversary Close To The Edge American tour
The fall tour will see Jay Schellen take the place of the late Alan White on drums, and is dedicated to White's memory
Yes have announced a fall 2022 American tour that will celebrate the 50th anniversary of their landmark 1972 album, Close To The Edge .
Set to begin on October 7 at the Keswick Theatre in Glenside, Pennsylvania, and conclude with a November 19 gig at the NYCB Theatre in Westbury, New York, the tour will feature Steve Howe on electric and acoustic guitar and backing vocals, lead vocalist Jon Davison, Billy Sherwood on bass guitar and backing vocals, and Geoff Downes on keyboards.
Jay Schellen, meanwhile, will take the place of longtime Yes drummer Alan White, who passed away in May. The tour – which is dedicated to White – will be prefaced by a tribute concert celebrating his life and music that will be held on October 2 at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle, Washington.
Featuring Siberian Khatru, And You and I , and the knockout 18-minute title-track, Close To The Edge is often cited as Yes's greatest album, and one of the finest records the prog-rock genre as a whole has ever produced.
“Our spirits were very high,” Howe told Guitar Player in a recent interview about the album's creation. “We were young, enthusiastic and adventurous, and we had this incredible breakthrough success with [their 1971 album] Fragile . We saw our next album as a real opportunity to prove our worth as a band. The door had been opened and we weren’t going to go backward. We wanted to sharpen our skills as far as writing and arranging.
"Concerts come and go, but a record is forever. I think we all had a sense that whatever we did next, it had to feel like some sort of definitive statement. A record like this was destined to be made, and we wanted to be the ones making it.”

Yes Announces ‘Close to the Edge’ Fall 2022 US Tour
Yes will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Close to the Edge with a fall 2022 U.S. tour, marking their first stateside outing since 2019.
The prog-rock legends will kick off the trek on Oct. 7 in Glenside, Pa., and wrap on Nov. 19 in Westbury, N.Y. Tickets go on sale on Sept. 2. You can see the full list of tour dates below.
The shows are part of Yes' ongoing The Album Series Tour 2022, which began in the U.K. in June. The tour is dedicated to late Yes drummer Alan White , who died in May. Before the tour kicks off, the band will hold the "Alan White — Celebrating His Life and Music" tribute concert on Oct. 2 at Seattle's Paramount Theatre.
"It is with great sadness that I join with the other members of Yes to acknowledge the passing of our dearest friend and drummer, Alan White," guitarist Steve Howe said in a June 2022 statement. "He gave so many of his best years to the band and was a true believer and determined professional til the very end. Being a kind and loving human being just came naturally to him, with his mellow, non-confrontational personality and abundant generosity, which made him so popular with his friends and everyone he met.”

YES To Celebrate 50th Anniversary Of 'Close To The Edge' With Fall 2022 U.S. Tour
Prog rock pioneers and Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inductees YES have revealed the dates and details for the U.S. leg of their "The Album Series Tour 2022," celebrating the 50th anniversary of their 1972 iconic album "Close To The Edge" . This marks the band's first trek in the U.S. since 2019 and will kick off with two shows in Glenside, Pennsylvania at the Keswick Theatre on Friday, October 7 and Saturday, October 8 and wrap in New York at the NYCB Theatre on November 19. Tickets will begin to go on sale on Friday, September 2; check local listings for information. See the full tour dates below.
As with "The Album Series Tour 2022," which started off in the U.K. this past June, the U.S. tour is dedicated to the late Alan White — the band's legendary drummer — following his passing this past May. Before the tour gets underway, a special tribute concert — "Alan White - Celebrating His Life And Music" — will be held on October 2 at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle.
Alan White joined YES in June 1972, just days before their "Close To The Edge" tour began. Over the following 50 years, Alan would appear on every YES album, including 2021's "The Quest" . Following the global pandemic, he had been looking forward to this tour and re-joining his bandmates on stage, something he lived for, in the run-up to his 50th anniversary of joining YES . Sadly, that was not be, but Alan 's towering presence will be omnipresent on the tour. Alan 's good friend, drummer Jay Schellen , will join YES for the forthcoming tour, alongside Steve Howe (guitars and backing vocals), Geoff Downes (keyboards), Jon Davison (lead vocals) and Billy Sherwood (bass guitar and backing vocals).
The "Close to the Edge" show will comprise full production and a high-definition video wall directed by Andy Clark and featuring the artwork of Roger Dean .
Following the release of "The Yes Album" and "Fragile" in 1971, YES released what is widely considered one of the most defining albums, not only for YES but for the whole progressive movement. "Close To The Edge" became an inspiration for their contemporaries and for successive generations of musicians. The album is saluted with a cover story in the September 2022 issue of the national magazine Guitar Player , for which Steve Howe was interviewed. He recalls: "We were young, enthusiastic, and adventurous, and we had this incredible breakthrough success with 'Fragile' . We saw our next album as a real opportunity to prove our worth as a band. The door had been opened and we weren't going to go backward. We wanted to sharpen our skills as far as writing and arranging."
Journalist Joe Bosso wrote about the album's place in rock history in Guitar Player (September 2022): "Vast, enigmatic, full of moments of spectacular grandeur and ever-changing hues, 'Close To The Edge' is the 'Lawrence of Arabia' of progressive-rock albums. Comprised of just three tracks — the dizzying side-long, 18-minute title track, the equally sprawling mini epic 'And You And I' , and the whacked-out, hyperactive jazz-funk album closer 'Siberian Khatru' — 'Close To The Edge' documented YES operating at the peak of their musical powers."
YES 2022 U.S. tour dates are:
Oct. 07 - Keswick Theatre - Glenside, PA Oct. 08 - Keswick Theatre - Glenside, PA Oct. 09 - State Theatre - New Brunswick, NJ Oct. 11 - Ryman Auditorium - Nashville, TN Oct. 13 - Florida Theatre - Jacksonville, FL Oct. 14 - The Parker Playhouse - Ft. Formed in 1968 by Jon Anderson and the late and much-missed Chris Squire , YES have been one of the most innovative, influential and best-loved bands in rock music history. Their 1970s albums "The Yes Album" , "Fragile" , "Close To The Edge" , "Yessongs" (a triple live album set), "Tales From Topographic Oceans" , "Relayer" and "Going For The One" were ground-breaking in musical style and content. Their music also became synonymous with artist Roger Dean whose distinctive YES logo design and artwork adorned the lavish gatefold presentation sleeves of many YES albums.
With sales of over 50 million records, the Grammy Award -winning YES were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2017 where they performed "Roundabout" from the album "Fragile" and the FM radio-friendly "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" from the 1985 album "90125" . In 2021 YES released their 22nd studio album, "The Quest" , produced by Steve Howe , which went to No. 1 in the UK rock chart and entered the official U.K. album chart at No. 20.

Yes release 50th anniversary North America tour dates
30+ date tour kicks off June 5th
YES, one of the biggest bands in prog rock history and true pioneers of the genre, today (March 26) revealed the dates and details for this summer’s 50th Anniversary North American tour titled #YES50: Celebrating 50 Years of YES. Tickets for the 30-plus date outing, which kicks off June 5 and 6 with a two-night engagement at the Arcada Theatre in St. Charles, IL, will go on sale to the public beginning this Friday, March 30 or Saturday, March 31, with select shows going on sale in early April. A handful of additional dates will be announced soon.
“Much has changed since I joined Yes in 1970, but the core elements of the band have remained consistent,” shares guitarist Steve Howe. “We want to mark this anniversary with a tour that encompasses some of our best-loved work and revisit a few classic pieces that have been lost for a while. We look forward to sharing the 50th anniversary with the fanbase, playing classic songs that celebrate the broad musical style of Yes.”
“I have been blessed to be a member of this amazing band’s rhythm section for the past 46 years, mostly in the company of my great friend Chris Squire, and latterly alongside Chris’ chosen successor, Billy Sherwood, who is receiving recognition for stepping into Chris’ pre-eminent bass and vocals,” says drummer Alan White. “Each night we are pausing to reflect on Chris’ importance to Yes, his desire that we should continue to share Yes music on stages worldwide, and the specific dedication of ‘Onward’ to his huge memory. I’m so grateful to continue to be performing on stages for our dedicated fans and look forward to celebrating our 50th Anniversary in America. It has been a great ride!”
“Being a member of the band during its 50th anniversary is a privilege and honor,” adds Geoff Downes (keys). “It is awe-inspiring to reflect on the caliber and invention of the musicians who have forged the legacy of Yes since 1968, always pushing the boundaries. Playing on stage with founder member Tony Kaye to launch the 50th anniversary [on this year’s Cruise to the Edge] was a wonderful experience for the band and our fans, to whom we dedicate this special tour.”
During this summer’s “Evening with YES” shows, YES–Steve Howe (guitar since 1970), Alan White (drums since 1972), Geoff Downes (keyboards; first joined in 1980), Jon Davison (vocals since 2011) and Billy Sherwood (guitar/keyboards in the 1990s and the late Chris Squire’s choice to take over bass/vocals in 2015)–will perform a special classic hits concert to commemorate the landmark occasion.
The cross-country trek will take the 2017 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees to Kansas City, Denver, Los Angeles (June 19 at the Ford Theater), San Jose, Detroit, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Boston, Staten Island, Philadelphia, Washington, DC and Orlando, among many other cities, before wrapping July 28 in Atlanta. Yes Announce Close to the Edge 50th Anniversary Fall 2022 US Tour
The post Yes Announce Close to the Edge 50th Anniversary Fall 2022 US Tour appeared first on Consequence .
Yes are celebrating the 50th anniversary of their seminal album Close to the Edge with a Fall 2022 US tour.
The legendary progressive rock band kicks off the outing on October 7th and 8th with a two-night stand at the Keswick Theatre in Glenside, Pennsylvania. The itinerary runs through the rest of the month and into November, wrapping on November 19th at the NYCB Theatre in Westbury, New York.
Ticket pre-sales for select dates begin as early as tomorrow (August 30th) at 10 a.m. local time (use code APPLAUSE ). General sales begin Friday (September 2nd) via Ticketmaster .
As with the band’s recent UK tour, the upcoming US trek is dedicated to the memory of late Yes drummer Alan White, who had played in the band since 1972. Sadly, White passed away in May following a “brief illness,” right before Yes set out on the European run.
Alan’s good friend, drummer Jay Schellen, will join Yes for the forthcoming dates, alongside Steve Howe (guitars/backing vocals), Geoff Downes (keyboards), Jon Davison (lead vocals), and Billy Sherwood (bass/backing vocals). The 50th anniversary shows will feature a full stage production and a high-definition video wall directed by Andy Clark and featuring the artwork of Roger Dean.
Released in 1972, Close to the Edge is hailed as Yes’ magnum opus and one of the greatest prog-rock albums ever. Comprised of three tracks spanning nearly 39-minutes, its long twisting arrangements and multi-movement compositions have come to define the genre.
“We were young, enthusiastic, and adventurous, and we had this incredible breakthrough success with Fragile ,” Howe told Guitar Player magazine [via a press release]. “We saw our next album as a real opportunity to prove our worth as a band. The door had been opened and we weren’t going to go backward. We wanted to sharpen our skills as far as writing and arranging.”
