DIY Hiking Guide To Z-Point & Shanti Fall, Kemmangundi

Spread the Word!

A second visit to Z Point and Shanti Falls left us truly gaping. This time we embarked during a different season and experienced an entirely different landscape. Time and seasonal changes did little to mar the beauty of the place but the chipping of time remained visible.

The view of mountains on one side and the view of plains on the other side with a never-ending ridge line makes Z-point exquisitely unique and a ‘do-not-miss-place’ when you visit Chikmagalur.

Unlike the name, Z-point is not a single summit point; rather, a long ridge line where you can relax at different places on the hilltop. Shanti Falls is located en route on your hike to the Z-point in Kemmangundi.

As Z-point and Shanti Falls have attracted crowds over the years for their beauty and landscape, terrain improvements have also been made by the government in the region to encourage tourists and travelers. This guide will help you with every piece of information you might need to ensure you make the most of your visit to Shanti Waterfall and Z-Point on your trip.

Z-Point Hiking Guide

Table of Contents

How To Reach Z-point From Chikmagalur?

There are no direct buses to reach Kemmangundi or Z-point from Chikmagalur. You can board a bus to Lingadahalli and then to Kemmangundi but note that the buses are not frequent.

The best way to reach Z-point is by using personal transport. You can also rent two-wheelers or hire a jeep from Chikmagalur city daily. The choice of personal transport is dependent on the number of people you are planning to go with.

As mobile networks don’t work in this area, we recommend you download offline maps or start navigating from your stay. Search in Google Maps for “ Z point entrance rock garden ”. You will lose your signal midway, however, it is a straight route to the gate. We encourage you to get help from locals if you happen to face any difficulty in finding the route.

Although two-wheelers were allowed just 100 m before the Shanti fall, cars were denied entry beyond the gate.

Network Availability

No cellular reception could be found among all the network operators including generally reliable ones like Airtel and Jio.

ATM Availability

No ATMs could be found at the place. The nearest ATMs are only available in Chikmagalur town. On your trip to the Kemmangundi side, carry sufficient cash, at least 1K per person (Rs. 500 for your jeep ride to Hebbe Falls which is situated nearby).

Please note that UPI and other digital payments cannot be done as the signal is extremely weak at best.

Languages Spoken

The regional language of Kannada is the only language spoken by the people in the region.

Parking Availability

In the radius of the front gate of the Z Point is a No Parking Zone. You will be directed to the nearest parking point by a watch person standing in front of the gate who controls the parking of vehicles, and entry and exit timings.

Although he redirects you to park uphill near the Kemmangundi sunset point and park, we recommend you choose the nearest parking lot that is on the side of the road near the sit-out.

Please be aware that there is an operational toll between Hebbe Falls and Z Point where Rs. 50 is charged for two-wheelers, Rs. 10 for walking, and more for other vehicles.

Restroom Facilities

There is no restroom near the Z-point entry gate. But clean, well-maintained, and paid restrooms (Rs. 5) are available near the Kemmangundi Sunset Point and Hebbe Falls which are nearby.

Best Time To Visit

View of z-point along the ridge line

Walk straight past the play area for about 1.5 Km. The route has no shortage of lush greenery, made ever more refreshing with tall trees. Right after crossing the waterfall, you can see a steep uphill route on your right.

Z-point hiking route - steep uphill climb

Be very careful during the rains, as the terrain tends to get slippery. Do not roam on the far-off edges, or attempt to create insta moments. Safety should always be your priority. Safety ensures you continue to experience spellbound places such as this.

Breathtaking Z Point

by Steps Together · Published August 6, 2021 · Updated August 31, 2021

After the refreshing visit to Bababudangiri on the day one of our Chikmaglur trip , Our itinerary for the day two was very simple. We included only two places in our plan for today, viz Z Point and Hebbe Falls, as we had to return to Bangalore on the same evening. Though there were only two places to visit, we did not guess it would take a whole day’s time. However, both the places were breathtakingly beautiful and glad that we made a great choice by visiting them.

Our first destination for the day was Z Point, which is a popular viewpoint in Kemmangundi. It can be reached by an uphill trek of about 2.5 km from Kemmangundi (near Rajbhavan). There is even a jeep service available which will cover a certain distance of the same trek trail. We decided to visit this point in the early morning to avoid the crowd and also to enjoy the beautiful nature.

Reaching Kemmangundi

All of us woke up to a pleasant morning, quickly got freshened up, and started towards Kemmangundi at around 6.30 AM. Kemmangundi is 12 km from the homestay where we stayed. The road leading to it was heavenly in the early morning. With greenery all around, the narrow, curvy road traversed through green coffee plantations. The light rain was playing hide-and-seek with our journey. As we approached Kemmangundi, it started to rain heavily and also started to become foggy, which made the scenery look even more blissful.

Kemmangundi Z point

Parking at Kemmangundi

There are two parking lots in Kemmangundi. The first one is where the security guards would stop and ask you to take a walk to the top of Kemmangundi. The second one is at the top itself, near to the garden maintained by the horticulture department. The starting point of the Z Point trek trail lies between these two parking lots. We missed noticing this point and went ahead towards the second parking lot. Later, came back to the trek starting point and decided to park our car in the first parking lot because usually the second parking lot gets crowded during daytime and even the roads get jammed because of visitors. So, Thilak and Vineeth dropped all of us near the Z Point trek starting point and went to the first parking lot to park our cars.

Trekking Options

You can take the jeep ride to Z Point, but note that they take only till halfway, and you need to walk from then on. Also, we felt that their price was not worth it. There is no parking facility near this starting point. Only the jeeps that give a ride to the tourists for Z Point were parked there. When we were about to start trekking, two jeeps offered the ride for 800Rs. We wanted to walk rather taking the jeep. So, we ignored them. They reduced their price to 500 Rs at last but still we preferred walking. Jeep driver’s efforts to scare us by telling that the bad road condition and presence of leeches went in vain.

Shanti Falls on Kemmangundi Z point

Starting the Trek

As we went in the rainy season, leeches we anyway unavoidable. We took enough precautions by applying shampoo on our legs and carrying salt. Still, there was no escape from them. The forest trail was amazing. Though the road was muddy, it had its own beauty. Water streams in between added their own charm to nature. There is an off-road trail till the half of the trail till which, the jeeps can come. But the actual adventure starts after this point. The trail becomes extremely narrow, with a deep valley on one side. Since it was very foggy, we could not see anything, but it was very scary.

The trail is literally breath-taking. As we proceeded further, the weather was becoming more and more foggy, was drizzling in between, the pathway was completely wet and slippery. What followed was the most amazing thing we have ever experienced, after a certain point, the weather became extremely windy. It was almost at cyclone speed. All of us enjoyed it to a great extent. The wind force was only increasing as we were climbing up. It was pushing us with all its strength. We made it to the top and the feeling that we felt was indescribable in words. We were awestruck by mother nature. The clouds were passing through us at full speed, giving us glimpses of the surrounding mountains. We could not get the proper view of them because of the fog. But whatever we saw made it worth all the efforts that we put in.

Kemmangundi Z point

Experience at Z point peak

After spending some time enjoying the weather and nature at the top, we returned. The weather became terrifying with rains and the extreme wind. With the utmost care, we trekked down the hill and reached the parking lot. This trek is an unforgettable experience of a lifetime for us. The Z Point is highly underrated. Maybe it is because of the danger involved in the trail. If you love adventure, we highly recommend going on this trek.

Kemmangundi Z point

We returned to the homestay at around 11.30 am and had our brunch at the homestay. By the time all of us got ready and checked out the homestay, it was 2 PM. Our next destination was Hebbe Falls.

  • Carry salt or apply shampoo to get protection from leaches to some extent.
  • Carry food and water as you cannot find any hotels nearby.
  • If you are going in a rainy season, prefer raincoats to umbrellas, as the umbrellas can’t stand that extreme wind at the top.

Directions:

Live the experience.

How a Gorgeous Trek Turned Into a Nightmare in Chikmagalur!

Photo of How a Gorgeous Trek Turned Into a Nightmare in Chikmagalur! 1/3 by Supriya Sahu

In Chikmagalur, we got a chance to have luscious chicken curry, poha, and freshly brewed coffee as a gift from the locals; we played like children outside the home, had fun with pets, smelled flowers, and enjoyed a very slow but meaningful lifestyle during mornings and evenings - in between, it was all about exploring the place and inner selves.

Photo of How a Gorgeous Trek Turned Into a Nightmare in Chikmagalur! 2/3 by Supriya Sahu

It was a four day trip to Chikmagalur. In the initial three days, We had already taken a dip in Hebbe Falls , felt the drips and drops of water jumping from the rocks; had seen the cotton-like soft sheet covering the hills from the Mullayanagiri Peak; watched and analysed coffee history and making process; witnessed the heavenly views of reserved forests, meadows, wildlife, and the enormous landscapes alternating one after another on Kudremukh Trek. Everything turned out to be more than our expectations. The beauty was endlessly peaceful and relieving.

Everything was almost covered, but as we were returning on the last day, we saw this board directing us to the Z-point. It was yet 6 hours for our return bus, and the thought of covering this point tickled somewhere in our stomachs - ALL OF OURS. Finally, when one restless fellow demanded it, we all JOYFULLY agreed.

Z Point Trekking Peak

Z-point is in Kemmangundi, which is 65 KM from Chikmagalur. To brace the sweeping views of Western Ghats, you must keep this on your list. It is a must-do for anyone who is looking for some peaceful, serene place undisturbed by humans. This trek will not only show you the beautiful views but will also challenge your bravery and endurance.

Photo of Z Point Trekking Peak, Chikmagalur, Karnataka, India by Supriya Sahu

It’s a rather good hike on a sunny day for adrenaline junkies, for there is a narrow route to the top on which only a single person can trail (forget about crossing each other at some points). To make the journey even more difficult, there are no railings or fences on the whole trip.

We met a driver cum guide who would help us in going uphill. We began. There was a safari at the beginning, followed by an easy way to the medium difficulty trek. As we strolled further, we realised that there was no human in sight. Nevertheless, there were appearances of other forms of life: Mosses and algae covered the land in patches; there were sounds of birds and small insects; Squirrels jumping and trekking to their own homes(god those lucky trained guys), ants busy feasting and walking in colonies; snake’s ecdysis hinted us about our arrival into a foreign land - it was nature's symphony. But we had to be careful each bit. Sun was slowly leaving us alone, but then too there were rays guiding us to the top, and we held on to them tightly.

Photo of How a Gorgeous Trek Turned Into a Nightmare in Chikmagalur! by Supriya Sahu

I am not exaggerating; it was beautifully ecstatic. It was drizzling, and the soil was soaked in water, making it a bit slippery to walk. The forest opened doors to the vast mountain - clear, plain, giant, and covered entirely with grass with some trees’ spots. From the base, the hill rose till eternity, and we wanted to reach there. In calculated thoughts, it looked easy - There was a well-marked thin terrain; the guide was with us; friends could hold each other better. It was as if we were walking on the plain green grassland with a sleek finish, shiny surface.

Photo of How a Gorgeous Trek Turned Into a Nightmare in Chikmagalur! by Supriya Sahu

We started to climb, one step at a time. Scary, but as we sang "Me Zindagi ka sath nibhata chla gya" by Mohammed Rafi, it seemed possible, lighter, and closer to life.

The weather in the mountains changes in just a flick. And just like that, it started to rain heavily. Amidst rainfall, slant, and slippery terrain, we found ourselves struggling to go further or even come down. The mountain stood carelessly and watched us silently as if it were testing our mistakes, our togetherness, and human nature.

As we looked and became more careful, we noticed the slope and it looked like the end. This was nature deceiving us, and I had never felt that I could be trapped by it. But there we were, determined to conquer our fears. 5 boys, 2 girls, 1 guide, and one point for which we went till there. It was only just 100 m distance remaining to the top when we intelligently and collectively decided to retract before it got wilder.

I know, this may sound dramatic, and you might be thinking that it is not even a Himalayan trek. But believe me, it turned out to be horrendous towards the end. For some minutes, I was having difficulty breathing by the force of air and water. I did not see a lot after that, but I can recollect each second of that beautiful tricky trek. Only one thought kept on coming back to me, "I want to go home."

We held hands, as tight as we could - to maintain the grip to come down. If one slipped, it was the end, not just for one - for all. We formed a chain. I was wearing shoes; some wore casual sandals or slippers. It was also a signal of something wrong, but everyone behaved responsibly and was best in his/her behaviour. Panic in such a situation could have killed all of us, and so, we constantly talked about random things to maintain a positive persona, smiled, held and helped each other. Holding each other's hands, slowly, steadily, we came back to a safe point in 45 minutes and caught our breaths.

Photo of How a Gorgeous Trek Turned Into a Nightmare in Chikmagalur! by Supriya Sahu

Tips from someone who learnt from the mistakes -

1. Refrain from trekking after 4 pm, or have a sure-shot forecast handy.

2. Don’t put all your eggs in your guide's basket. Try to be mindful about your safety right from the point you begin till you end.

3. Wear good shoes, light clothes - the terrain may be slippery, and it might rain on the way.

4. Last but not least (this may vary from person to person), do not bring your ego forward and fight against nature. Observe the conditions closely and take calculated steps.

I now feel grateful about the whole trek and writing about it feels like living that entire experience again. We do not know what lay on the other side, and we could not even witness the top of the Z-point, but what we indeed realised is that we cannot fight against nature and its ferociousness. If we try fighting it, we lose, but the thing is, we know about it, and now we thrive.

We were lucky, unlucky, and special victims of nature. I cannot say that this situation would not come back, nor am I sitting back to avoid it. But open eyes, healthy heart and powerful physique can feel everything and nothing at the same time. So now I should rest, hibernate and get ready for next. Till then, let me write, let me reminisce. ❤️

How to reach Z-Point?

You can cover this while being in Chikmagalur. As I mentioned above, it is at a distance of 65 KM from there. Cover Hebbe Falls, return and take a right while coming back, or vice-versa.

Photo of How a Gorgeous Trek Turned Into a Nightmare in Chikmagalur! by Supriya Sahu

If you are low on time, you can reach Kemmangundi directly. While on your way to Hebbe Falls, you will see a board on the left. Keep an eye. From there, go straight on the way to the trek. Brace yourself for an awesomely memorable experience.

Thank you for going through my whole experience. It is a pleasure finding you on this page. Do let me know in case you have experienced something like this?

Exploring a destination...

The joy of travel comes in exploring new things. Planting your feet somewhere you’ve never been before brings with it the rush of discovery and the joy of pushing back on the boundaries of your world.

But when one does arrive at that fresh frontier, there are ways better than others to begin your journey of discovery. Follow these steps and see the world with a new light.

• Discover a new city through a food tour. Food tour’s are the easiest way to take a tour, learn about the local delicacies, and the best of all, get great tips that aren’t just “local” tips for tourists, but sometimes, lessons for a lifetime too

• Use Public Transportation. When you are in a new city, you can possibly see places and people that you wouldn’t normally see when simply walking to the places that checks your list. Some buses or rails take you to parts of the city you wouldn’t get to see otherwise. Whilst using public transportation, just ensure that you are following the local norms and do remember to watch the locals!

• Find a local festival. Go beyond what other tourists might do while visiting a place. Look for the unique things you would want to do. Use social media or the local tourism website to find out what’s going on locally. You may have to move out of the center of the city to do some of the less popular but more unique things, so just keep that in mind!
