Why Have the Same Holiday as Everyone Else?

What to Do in Klang, Malaysia – on a One Day Trip.

Sharing is caring!

Located about 60 miles south of Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, the city of Klang is an easy day trip from KL. It’s also a stop off for many cruise ships – and remarkably satisfying to say, but the big question is what to do in Klang once you get there? Here are some answers…

  • My First Experience of Klang

I have no idea what is currently happening.

It’s just before lunchtime and I’m sitting on a blue plastic chair in a ramshackle restaurant in a backstreet in Klang.

I’ve just ordered food but the waitress has brought my cutlery over in a bowl and is now pouring tea from the teapot on it!

She then refills my teapot, leaves the cutlery soaking in the bowl – grins and walks away.

I’m obviously looking very confused as one of the old uncles sipping his own tea at the next table tells me ‘clean’ – and then I understand.

Good tea in Chinese culture (and Malaysia has a strong Chinese culture) doesn’t come from the first water poured on the leaves. Instead, you pour a little water on them, rinse them and throw the first pour away – however, that tea is boiling – and so, pouring it over the cutlery sterilises it from any germs that might have been leftover from washing it in the local water.

1 day trip in klang valley

I’m not sure whether they do it for every customer or just the Westerners, but it was not the only surprise I was going to find on my day trip to Klang.

The cool little town surprised me at every turn.

So, if you’re wondering whether you should go to Klang on a day trip from KL. If you’re not sure if it’s worth visiting the town as an excursion if you come into the cruise centre at nearby Port Klang. Of, if you’re pretty sure you fancy a day trip and want to know what places to visit in Klang when you get there – try out our one day guide.

Fun Things to do in Klang

Eat bak kut teh, go see the bird art, check out the jewels, take the heritage walk, meet the fortune-telling parrot, see the cute fire station, walk across the old bridge., visit the snake temple, visit the blue tears, take a trip to crab island, getting to klang from kuala lumpur, getting to klang from your cruise ship, sharing is caring.

There isn’t one big attraction in Klang – there’s no shiny Petronas Towers looming over the city like there is in Kuala Lumpur, instead, it’s a great place to wander around looking at the old faded buildings, poking your noses in the small local shops and trying the local food.

Which is pretty much what we did.

So with that in mind, here’s what we did during our one day in Klang (plus three things we didn’t have time for but that you might want to add to your ‘where to go in Klang’ list.)

Faded old building in Klang with birds stuck on it.

Bak Kut Teh is probably the most famous local dish in Klang. This was what I had ordered for lunch before my strange tea experience.

It’s not the most photogenic dish as you’ll see below, but omg, it was delicious.

Bak Kut Teh is basically a pork stew seasoned with spices including cinnamon and star anise. The broth is clear but incredibly rich in flavour and the meat just falls off the bone.

Bowls of Bak Kuh Tek, rice and tea soaking cutlery in Klang, Malaysia

We ordered ours from a shop close to Klang station called Teck Teh Bak Kut Teh at 27 Jalan Stesen.

This restaurant has apparently been around for over 50 years and is still using the traditional stew recipe from way back when.

It looks like it has a lot of regulars And they couldn’t have been more welcoming.

The staff were smiley, even though we had no idea what we were ordering, and once they realised, the uncles at the table next door helped us get our meat on the bone, explained what was going on with the tea and had a bit of a chat about why we were in Klang.

The bathroom does need a little bit of attention though so you might want to skip that bit!

But, as you’ll see shortly, this helped add another surprise to our Klang trip.

Food Lovers Tour Suggestion

If you like Bak Kut Teh, you might want to check out one of the local tours, the Klang Heritage Walking Tour – and Cooking Class which includes a walk around Klang and then, the opportunity to learn how to make Bak Kut Teh yourself with a local chef.

See more about it or book the tour here.

Directly opposite the restaurant was a car park that had a wall of cool street art with birds on – but, it was only once I turned down another alley just behind it, I realised that birds are actually a theme for street art in Klang.

Mural of birds sitting on a window

The alley behind the car park (next to a shop called Sephan Awake) is lined with different bird paintings.

Apparently, Klang is home to a quite sizeable black crow community and so the city commissioned a whole load of paintings to honour them.

And yes, they also do, occasionally, have an event where people shoot them to keep the numbers down, but honestly, they love them really.

Mural of black and green birds in Klang, Malaysia

There’s also another cool piece of street art on Jalan Stesen just by the Biz Hotel. Look for the phone box.

Oh, and if street art is your thing, and you’re also going to Penang on your Malaysia trip, you might want to nip over to this piece on Penang’s lesser-known street art – there are some seriously cool murals to be found.

After Mr Differentville had been in the restaurant bathroom and come out muttering ‘you do not want to go in there’, I was in a bit of a predicament – I needed to go in there!!

I’d drunk a lot of that tea the nice lady made me.

Things were just getting a bit desperate when we passed a museum. Museums have bathrooms and, as this one also had no entrance fee, I decided to go in and find it.

It felt rude just to go in and use the bathroom though and so we also went in for a wander – and what was inside was one of the other fantastic surprises Klang had in store.

The museum in question is the Sultan Abdul Aziz Royal Gallery.

It highlights the history and lifestyle of Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah who was Sultan of Selangor for 39 years and King of Malaysia for two – and it is full of THE most amazing jewels, trinkets and treasures.

I’m not really a museum person but this was definitely a great place to visit.

If you only do one thing in Klang from this list, go to the Royal Gallery.

It’s open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 5pm.

Sadly, you aren’t allowed to take photos and so I can’t show you any pictures.

If you’re in Klang on a Saturday, a guided walk departs from the Royal Gallery at 9-9.15 showing you some of the history of Klang.

It takes about 2.5 hours.

It starts at the Royal Gallery and includes nine historic buildings in and around Klang City centre.

These include the former Chartered Bank Building, the Royal Klang Club, Klang Convent School, the Tengku Kelana Indian Muslim Mosque and the Sri Nagara Thendayuthapani Temple.

Mosque and firestation in Klang

You need to pre-register for the walk the week before your visit. Find the details on how to do that here .

If you’re not there at the weekend, you can find a list of the buildings via the link above and map them on google maps.

Most of them have plaques outside telling you their history and why they are so important.

This was my whole reason for wanting to go to Klang.

The parrot works from the Little India section of Klang.

Apparently, he will draw a card from a tarot pack which his helper will then interpret for you.

Parrot sitting by a palmistry sight

Sadly, the day I went his human helper was not in the mood to talk to me and totally ignored me when I appeared, so I’m not sure exactly what news the feathery one would have conveyed.

You might be luckier.

The good news is that Klang’s Little India is still a fun place to wander for half an hour, parrot fortunes or no parrot fortunes.

You’ll find it on Jalan Tengku Kelana.

Little India Tour Suggestion

If you want to learn more about Klang’s Little India, you might want to check out this tour of the area.

It actually picks you up from Subang Jaya which is just outside of Klang (although you might be able to arrange to meet them in Klang).

It shows you around Little India, and many of the other ideas in this post. I also note that Bird Fortune Telling fees are not included in the price, which leads me to believe, that our feathered friend here is on the itinerary.

See more about it here.

This is one of the buildings on the Heritage Tour, but if you’re not going on that, then at least make a stop at this cute fire station.

The original building has been here since the 1890s but it’s had a bit of a red and white makeover and looks super cute.

Fire station in Klang

There is also a fire museum inside.

Klang is actually quite a large city and the north of the town is located on the other side of the Klang River.

Due to half the roads in Klang being dug up when we visited we got a bit lost and walked onto the Tengku Kelana bridge from which you at least get a good view of the gold-domed Masjid Bandar Diraja Klang.

Image: Hafiz Mustapha/Depositphotos.com

I was however supposed to be on the old double-decker Kota Bridge from which the view is even better!

I didn’t shoot the picture above (mine was rubbish) but I’m pretty sure it was shot from the Kota Bridge.

Plus, it’s a cool old bridge – by the time you read this all the work should be done and you might find it a bit easier to navigate around.

At this point, our Klang day trip was over – it was my birthday and I needed to get back to Kuala Lumpur for a night at the Helipad Bar , but, if I’d had more time, there were three other things to do in Klang I wanted to check out – and that you also might want to try.

The Tian Hock Kung Temple is a temple slightly outside of the old part of Klang and famous for its decorative snake sculptures.

A few live snakes also live in the temple, but unlike the snake temple we visited in Penang a few days later, they aren’t just snoozing around the place but in cages.

If you want to visit Tian Hock Kung, you’ll need to take a taxi or a Grab as it’s not that easy to get to, and a bit too far to walk from Klang centre – that’s one reason why it went off my list of where to go in Klang.

That, and I knew I was going to the other snake temple in Penang later that week – and if you want to see pics of that, check out this post

If you think this sounds fun, but you don’t want to have to find this post again to do it, why not check out the tour we made with FreeApps. Just click on the picture below and it’ll take you to the tour.

1 day trip in klang valley

If you don’t have to hurry back to Kuala Lumpur, this might be a great way to extend your Klang Day Trip into the early evening

Close to Klang is the habitat of some fireflies, and river of blue algae that glows at night.

1 day trip in klang valley

I didn’t get the chance to check this out as I had to be back in KL, but, if you can stay later, then you can book a tour that includes a walk around Klang followed by a trip to the fireflies and the bioluminesence.

See more about the tour here.

Officially known as Pulau Ketam, this traditional island is a short train, then ferry ride away from Klang.

All cute fishing boats and houses on stilts, my original plan was to go here before going to Klang but I soon discovered if you have to be back in KL for late afternoon (and don’t get up at 6am like you planned!) this might have to be an either/or outing as combining the trains from Kuala Lumpur with the ferries to the island – and getting back to Klang to explore – means a long day out.

If you want to try it though, You can also book a day trip from KL to Palau Ketam. I might try that next time I go as I really want to see it.

Click here to check out the tour.

Or, if you’re a more independent soul. you can do the journey yourself.

You get the train to the last stop on the Kommuter Line at Pelabuhan Klang (see the link to the timetable below). You’ll find the port over the road from the station and there are two ferry companies going to the island.

Here’s the timetable for boats to Palau Ketam on Ali Baba Cruises.

This website gives the other ferry timetable .

I’m not sure what that company is called, but it seems pretty easy to navigate the port once you get there – it’s not huge.

Woman standing in alley with murals in Klang, Malaysia

Where is Klang? And How Do You Get There

As I said, it’s a short day trip south of Kuala Lumpur. It’s easily reached by the KTM Kommuter train from KL Sentral station in about 90 minutes, and Klang station is walking distance from pretty much everything in this day trip.

The trains run fairly regularly and you can check out the timetable here.

If you are going to Kuala Lumpur you’ll want to read out guide to fun and unusual things to do in KL before you get there.

The other way you might come to Klang is via a cruise ship docked at Port Klang.

Port Klang is the port used when cruises come into Kuala Lumpur and most people take either an excursion or self-guided trip into KL itself (if you would like to do that you can book a Port Klang to KL transfer in advance here).

If you’ve already been to Kuala Lumpur or, don’t really want to go all that way, Klang makes a good short side trip. From what I can gather, there’s not a lot of things to do in Port Klang itself.

To get to Klang from the cruise ship terminal you’ll need to get a taxi from the Bousted Cruise Centre where you will dock to Pelabuhan Klang station (a 20-minute drive) from which it’s just six stops, or 20 minutes to Klang. You could also take a cab the whole way to Klang. It’s about 40 minutes drive from the Boustead cruise centre.

So there you have it. A few suggestions of what to do in Klang. There are probably a few more attractions in the part of town over the other side of the river, but if you only have one day, this will be enough to keep you busy.

And if that parrot does decide to do any work, please let me know what he says.

15 Best Day Trips from Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur, the Capital of Malaysia and one of the largest cities in Asia, is a bustling city which offers plenty to do for everyone.

You could visit the iconic Petronas Towers, get lost in Chinatown, or take in some nature by exploring the Botanical Gardens and Bird Park.

Kuala Lumpur — or KL, as the locals call it — is so big and has so much to offer that you could probably spend a lifetime exploring it and still find daily surprises within the city.

However, if you find yourself in this modern city, it would be a shame if you didn’t take the time to check out some of the other amazing places that mainland Malaysia has to offer.

Here, you will find the best neighboring places to take a day trip to while getting out of the big city and exploring beautiful Malaysia.

1. Batu Caves

Batu Caves

Batu Caves is the easiest destination to get to on our list and can be reached in a short time, either by car or train since it is only about 13 kilometers outside of the city.

The caves are free to enter but be prepared for a little exercise; the entrance is located at the top of 272 stairs. The limestone caves consist of three large caverns as well as several smaller caves off the main rooms.

Inside the caves, there are several Hindu shrines and Swamis to view, and outside of the caves, there is a giant statue of Lord Murgan.

If you are lucky enough to go on a clear day, you will get a great view of the KL skyline from atop the stairs.

Recommended tour :  Kuala Lumpur: Private Tour to the Batu Caves

2. Kuala Selangor

Kuala Selangor

Heading west out of Kuala Lumpur, you will reach the small coastal town of Kuala Selangor. It is home to the largest firefly colony in the world, which creates an amazing scene every night.

The best way to view the fireflies is on a relaxing boat tour up the Selangor river with a local guide, who will give you lots of information about the area.

If the fireflies aren’t enough for you, Kuala Selangor is also home to the Melawati Bird Sanctuary, where you can spot countless rare birds and monkeys. If you find yourself hungry, make sure to try some of the local seafood that is caught fresh daily.

Suggested tour :  Kuala Selangor: Fireflies Tour with Batu Caves & Dinner

3. Genting Highlands

Genting Highlands

If you are feeling lucky, make sure to take a trip out to Genting Highlands, Malaysia’s only casino resort located in the beautiful mountains just north of Kuala Lumpur.

If gambling isn’t your thing that’s fine, you can enjoy the huge indoor/outdoor theme park. With roller coasters, the only skydiving simulator in Asia, and many more rides, it is sure to get adrenaline pumping through your veins.

Lastly, don’t forget the chance to go on the longest and fastest cable car in Asia that will provide you with stunning views of the rainforest beneath.

Available tour : From Kuala Lumpur: Genting Highlands and Batu Caves Day Trip

4. Cameron Highlands

Cameron Highlands

The Cameron Highlands are 200 kilometers outside of Kuala Lumpur and the journey takes about three hours each way.

The drive alone is worth it, as it takes you through beautiful green forests before arriving at Malaysia’s largest highlands resort.

The temperatures are cooler and the air is noticeably fresher in the Cameron Highlands which makes it a great place to escape to during the warm summer months.

Visiting the tea plantations and sipping on a nice warm cup of tea is a must. You can also pick strawberries on strawberry farms, wander through rose gardens, and visit butterfly and honeybee farms.

If you are feeling extra brave, take a dip in the freezing cold waters of Lata Iskandar waterfall.

Recommended tour :  From Kuala Lumpur: Cameron Highlands Private Full Day Tour

Malacca

Malacca is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a charming little town — much different than the hustle and bustle of Kuala Lumpur.

Malacca was once home to both Portuguese and Dutch settlers, and you can still see many signs of both cultures in the small town. If you want to learn more about the early settlers, visit the Malacca Museum, located in bright pink buildings which used to be home to Dutch administrative offices.

Walking down Jonker Street is a must; if you are lucky enough to be in Malacca on the weekend, Jonker Street is home to the biggest market in the town, where you can try all different kinds of local food.

Available tour :  Full-Day Trip to Historical Malacca from Kuala Lumpur

Bentong, Malaysia

Bentong is a quaint little town that was originally built by tin miners after they found tin in the Perting and Repas rivers.

Bentong is the perfect place to escape to if you are tired of the rush in Kuala Lumpur and looking for some peace and quiet. It is off the beaten path of tourists and home to both delicious food and nature.

If you have a sweet tooth, make sure to try some of the local homemade ice cream or the pineapple puffs.

If you are feeling adventurous, go try some of the infamous smelly durian fruit at Jimmy’s Durian Orchard.

7. Taman Negara

Taman Negara

If you are a nature enthusiast and love spending time in the great outdoors, then Taman Negara is an absolute must. People literally travel from all over the world to get the chance to explore one of the most biodiverse places on our planet.

Taman Negara is home to some of the rarest animals alive today and is one of the oldest rainforests on earth.

Day treks with local guides are available or you can do multi-day treks if you are up for sleeping out with the wildlife. Boat rides and a canopy walk are also possible while in Taman Negara.

Recommended tour :  From Kuala Lumpur: Private Full Day Tour to Taman Negara

Port Klang, Malaysia

Klang is not the most common day trip from Kuala Lumpur but it has more than enough attractions to create a fun day.

Klang has a large Indian population and a lot of Indian influence and this is transparent in some of the most interesting places in the city.

Little India is a great place to start your trip to Klang and some of the mosques, like Masjid India Klang, are also beautiful to visit.

If you are looking to do any shopping on your day trip from KL, Klang also has great malls.

Klang Parade and the Big Mall are just two of the many large shopping complexes that you can end up finding yourself spending money in for hours.

9. Bukit Tinggi

Bukit Tinggi, Malaysia

In Bukit Tinggi, the most popular activity is exploring the Colmar Tropical Resort, which feels like you are walking through a 16th-century French village. The buildings are all constructed in old European architecture, there are delicious French bakeries, and there are even cobblestone streets.

If you are up for more walking, you can hike up to the Japanese Gardens and enjoy an authentic cup of tea and a spa.

There are no public buses that go to Bukit Tinggi, so plan accordingly; you can either take a private shuttle bus from Kuala Lumpur or hire a taxi, but that would most likely be quite an expensive trip.

Old Town Ipoh

Ipoh is well-regarded as a culinary hot spot within Malaysia. In the local markets of Ipoh, you will find all different kinds of exotic food to taste. When it’s time for a proper meal, make sure to try either the Ipoh chicken rice or the shredded chicken noodle’s.

Once your stomach is full of food, head over to Nam Heong, home of the world-famous Ipoh White Coffee.

Walking around Ipoh, you will also find many small, hidden temples and some fascinating street art.

The perfect place to end the day is soaking in the hot springs of The Lost World of Tambun.

11. Fraser’s Hill

Fraser’s Hill, Malaysia

Fraser’s Hill is full of popular hiking trails and a great place to escape from the city. Even though it is one of the most popular places to go outside of Kuala Lumpur — since there are lots of different trails and activities — you can easily avoid the people.

Along the trails, there are countless small waterfalls and hundreds of different species of birds. If bird watching is really your thing, you can hire a private guide to take you out.

If you are more of a golfer, tee off at the Royal Fraser’s Hill Golf Club.

12. Pulau Ketam

Pulau Ketam

Pulau Ketam — or Crab Island — is a small fishing village to the west of Kuala Lumpur that has been completely built upon stilts over mangrove swamps.

Even though it is not located far from KL, you could not envision a place that is more different.

The people here are almost all fisherman and seeing them hard at work during the day or night is an impressive sight.

It is famous for its fresh seafood, so make sure to indulge and try as many of the different local foods as you can.

13. Putrajaya

Putrajaya

Putrajaya is not normally on the tourist map but it has many things to offer. Putrajaya is the federal administrative capital of Malaysia and home to some of the most famous landmarks in Malaysia.

On a walking tour of the city, you can see the pink-domed Putra Mosque, the Prime Minister’s office, Seri Perdana, and a handful of famous bridges.

The Natural History Museum houses many Malaysian national treasures and is also a great place to learn about local plants, animals, and geological rock formations.

If you want to escape the urban landscapes, check out the botanical gardens, home to over 700 plant species.

Best Day Trips and Weekend Excursions from Kuala Lumpur

So, you have explored every corner of Kuala Lumpur. You’ve scaled the heights of Petronas Twin Towers , hunted for bargains in Chinatown, and pigged out at Jalan Alor Food Market. What more is there to do?

Well, quite a lot, actually. And the options are incredibly diverse — from scenic rice fields to historic cities to delightful culinary havens.

Whether you’re a local or a tourist, whether you are short on time or simply can’t deal with the hassle of staying overnight, here are some of the best trips you can make from Kuala Lumpur within just one day:

1. Batu Caves

Batu Caves

Probably the easiest destination to get to from Kuala Lumpur, Batu Caves is not only a popular tourist attraction, it is also a holy site where locals still visit every day for worshiping. This is also the place where hundreds of thousands of Hindus from all over the country (and from as far as India) congregate every year to celebrate the Thaipusam festival.

Batu Caves is located only about 15 kilometres away from the city center and can easily be reached by train (40 minutes) or by car (20 minutes, with no traffic). To get inside the caves, however, comes with a little challenge, as you will have to climb 272 steps. Although torturous, the steps are pretty, so you can stop to snap some photos while you catch your breath.

If you go on a clear day, you’ll be rewarded a magnificent view of Kuala Lumpur skyline from the top. Apart from the temples and shrines, you’ll also get to marvel at the natural limestone caves…and of course, the monkeys.

Click here to learn more about the Batu Caves, how to get there, and if it’s worth visiting.

Things to Do At Batu Caves

  • Visit Hindu temples
  • Learn more about Hindu religion and Indian culture
  • Eat vegetarian South Indian cuisine
  • Admire the colorful architecture and the world’s tallest statue of Lord Murugan
  • See huge limestone caves
  • Visit the mini zoo (birds and reptiles)
  • Feed monkeys, pigeons, and fish
  • Go rock-climbing

2. Putrajaya

Putrajaya

Putrajaya is the federal administrative capital of Malaysia and home to some interesting post-modern Islamic architecture. Until the late 1980s, Putrajaya used to be a rubber plantation spanning 8,000 acres. The then prime minister proposed a new city to be built there to replace Kuala Lumpur as the new administrative capital.

Now, it is a thriving ‘green city’ in which 38% of the area is reserved for green spaces. The city features a network of open spaces and wide boulevards, and a 6.5km² lake, where you can do all sorts of water sports.

You can reach Putrajaya by train and bus, and get around by Grab Car. Alternatively, you can also book all-inclusive tours from Kuala Lumpur.

Things to Do in Putrajaya

  • Visit the Iron Mosque and the floating Putra Mosque
  • See the Prime Minister’s Office
  • Go on the iconic Seri Wawasan Bridge
  • Visit botanical gardens, which are home to over 700 plant species
  • Visit the Natural History Museum to learn about local plants, animals, and geological rock formations
  • Go on a Segway tour
  • Go on a boat tour on the lake
  • Try water sports: Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), kitesurfing, windsurfing, flyboarding, rowing, kayaking, jetskiing, and dragon-boating

3. Kuala Selangor

Kuala Selangor

Kuala Selangor is a small town 55km northwest of downtown Kuala Lumpur. It is where the estuary of the Selangor River is, where it drains into the Straits of Malacca. The town can be reached by bus, but it is easier to either rent a car or book a tour from Kuala Lumpur as there are not many public transports available within the town.

Kuala Selangor is well known for its fireflies. It is home to the largest firefly colony in the world, which creates a magical scene at night. You can go on a private boat tour to see them — it would make an amazing romantic date with your significant other.

Click here to find out more about the fireflies boat tour.

Things to Do in Kuala Selangor

  • Go on a boat tour to see thousands of fireflies
  • Take unique photos at the Sky Mirror, a.k.a. Malaysia’s Salar de Uyuni

4. Kuala Kubu Bharu

Fondly known as KKB by the locals, this place is the perfect antidote to whatever kind of stress you’re having. With an abundance of greenery, fresh air, scenic views, and multiple extreme sports, what more can you ask for?

This small town is located about an hour’s car ride away from Kuala Lumpur, and can also be reached by train.

5. Sekinchan

Sekinchan

Imagine a vast, green (or yellow, depending on the season) landscape of rice fields, perfect blue skies, and swishing sounds of the waves against the sand. You can find all that and more in Sekinchan.

Sekinchan is a fishing village that also boasts acres of rice fields producing one of the highest yields of rice in the country. Not only can you walk in the fields and take pictures, you can also learn about rice production by visiting the processing factory and museum. As a souvenir, you can purchase some of the locally produced rice.

Apart from rice, there’s also a beach and a fishing village where you can see how the locals live and indulge in the local seafood fare. The easiest way to visit Sekinchan is by driving or booking a tour. There are tours that combine both Kuala Selangor and Sekinchan in one trip.

Things to Do in Sekinchan

6. Pulau Ketam (Crab Island)

Pulau Ketam

Pulau Ketam (which translates to Crab Island) is a small fishing village just off the coast of Port Klang. The entire village was built on stilts over mangrove swamps. It’s not the kind of island that you go for swimming or sunbathing, so please don’t bring your bikinis or snorkeling gear.

Instead, it’s a great place for you to witness the Malaysian fishing culture, as most of the villagers are fishermen.Visiting the island is like going back in time — back to the 80s, or maybe earlier (I don’t know, I wasn’t born yet). You can see old-fashioned grocery shops, some of them still selling the snacks that Malaysians used to enjoy in their 80s/90s childhood. The island is also known for its seafood.

When the tide is low, you can enjoy looking at the crabs scampering across the muddy plains, burrowing into holes, eating, and fighting with each other.

Pulau Ketam is easily doable without a guide. Just take a train from Kuala Lumpur to Port Klang, and from there, walk to the jetty to take a ferry to the island.

Things to Do on Pulau Ketam

  • Ride an electric bike on the stilt village
  • Sample Chinese-style seafood dishes
  • Enjoy colorful murals and houses
  • Watch fishermen at work
  • Buy seafood products

Ipoh

If you don’t have the time or budget to go to Penang, Ipoh is a great alternative. It is well-regarded as a culinary hot spot in Malaysia and is also home to the famous Ipoh White Coffee . In the Ipoh market, you can snack on the various exotic delicacies on offer. For something more filling, be sure to try the Ipoh chicken rice or the shredded chicken noodles.

But there’s more to Ipoh than food. There’s so much history, culture, and nature for you to explore. Visit the numerous temples, go caving or hiking, or simply admire the beauty of a bygone era.

You can go to Ipoh by bus or train.

Things to Do in Ipoh

  • Observe British colonial architecture at Ipoh Old Town
  • Enjoy the street art
  • Visit the Ipoh Rail Station and the cave temples
  • Try Ipoh White Coffee at Nam Heong
  • Soak in the hot springs or splash around in the water theme park at The Lost World of Tambun
  • Visit the haunted Kellie’s Castle in nearby Batu Gajah town

8. Port Dickson

Port Dickson

I’ll say the truth — Port Dickson is not one of our best beaches. It’s not famed for clear-blue water, pristine sand, or vibrant corals. However, it’s one of the nearest to Kuala Lumpur (about 90 minutes’ drive south) and thus offers a decent beach getaway for KL dwellers.

Port Dickson stretches over 18 kilometers and is lined with palm trees and casuarinas. If you do wish to spend the night, there are plenty of options — from budget motels to 5-star water chalets. If Dubai has Palm Island, Port Dickson boasts a ‘ Hibiscus Island ‘ with water chalets forming a hibiscus shape when seen from a bird’s eye view.

Port Dickson can be reached by train and bus.

Things to Do in Port Dickson

  • Relax on one of the beaches
  • Do water sports
  • Visit the Cape Rachado lighthouse
  • Climb Bukit Batu Putih (White Rock Hill)
  • Learn about ostriches at the ostrich farm
  • Visit Lukut Museum and Fort
  • Stay in an over-water villa
  • Eat seafood

9. Malacca (Melaka)

Malacca city

If you Googled places to visit in Malaysia, you’d have seen the name Malacca popping up many times, often at the top of the list, alongside Kuala Lumpur and Penang. And there’s a good reason why.

Malacca is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that features the oldest European architectural remains in Asia. Having been colonized by the Portuguese, Dutch, and British, this city has a varied history, which is still reflected in the food, culture, and language of its people.

Malacca also has a large community called Nyonya or Peranakan, which is a mix of Malay and Chinese influences that has spawned a completely unique culture and food. You can take a bus to Malacca (go early if you want to make it a day trip) or book an all-inclusive tour from Kuala Lumpur.

Things to Do in Malacca

  • See the ruins from the Dutch and Portuguese colonial periods
  • Visit temples and museums
  • Take a river cruise
  • Sample Nyonya food
  • Haggle your way through the Jonker Walk Bazaar
  • Take a trishaw ride around the city
  • Visit the Portuguese settlement

10. Cameron Highlands

Cameron Highlands

The Cameron Highlands are located approximately 200 kilometres outside of Kuala Lumpur and can take around 3 – 4 hours to get to. The main draw of this destination it its cooler climate, which provides an ideal environment for planting tea, flowers, fruits, and vegetables. Most of the fresh produce distributed all over the country are grown here.

You can get to Cameron Highlands by bus, but because of the distance and travel time, making a day trip independently might feel a bit rushed. A better option would be to go with a tour, so that you won’t waste time figuring out how to get from one place to another.

Things to Do in Cameron Highlands

  • Learn how the local tea is produced
  • Drink freshly brewed tea at the tea plantation
  • Pick your own strawberries
  • Visit the lavender and rose gardens
  • Visit butterfly and honeybee farms
  • See how life in Malaysia looked like in the 50s at the Time Tunnel museum
  • Buy fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Hike the Mossy Forest on Mount Irau

11. Genting Highlands

Genting Highlands

If you’d still like to escape the heat of the city, but don’t want to make the 4-hour journey to Cameron Highlands, you can go to Genting Highlands instead. It takes only an hour to get there by bus and you can continue the rest of the way on the longest cable car in Southeast Asia.

While Cameron Highlands are all farms and nature, Genting Highlands are more about fun and games. It is most famous for its casino, which is the only legal casino in this predominantly Muslim country. If you’re not into gambling, there is a multitude of other fun, family-friendly activities to do.

Things to do in Genting Highlands

  • Try your luck at the country’s only casino resort
  • Go on thrill rides at the indoor and outdoor theme parks
  • Ride the scenic Genting Skyway cable car
  • Scare yourself at the Haunted Adventure
  • Cool off at the Snow World Experience
  • Catch a show at the Arena of Stars
  • Go on a 100m zipline amidst the clouds
  • Try indoor skydiving

12. Taman Negara (National Park)

Taman Negara Malaysia

Taman Negara (which means National Park) covers 4,343 square kilometres and was first established in 1925. It became the first official national park in Malaysia and took on the name Taman Negara in 1957 after independence.

Taman Negara protects the largest tract of ancient rainforest in the country and also hosts the tallest mountain in Peninsular Malaysia. Climbing this mountain can take up to 5 days, but if all you have is one day, you can still do a number of other activities. It is best to go on an organized tour.

Things to Do in Taman Negara

  • Have lunch in a floating restaurant
  • Learn about the flora and fauna on a jungle-trekking tour
  • Go on a 4WD safari
  • Visit an indigenous tribe’s village
  • Go rapid shooting on a wooden boat
  • Feed the fish at the Kelah Fish Sanctuary
  • Go spelunking at one of the caves

13. Fraser's Hill

Fraser's Hill

Another place with a cool climate is Fraser’s Hill, located not too far from Kuala Kubu Bharu. Originally founded as a tin-ore trading post, Fraser’s Hill is now a resort town and offers some of the best bird-watching and hiking spots in the country. Along the trails, you will find countless small waterfalls and hundreds of different species of birds.

The best way to get there is by car. Due to a lack of public transports in the area, the place is rarely overcrowded, which can be a huge advantage if you’re looking for some peace and quiet.

Things to Do on Fraser’s Hill

  • Stroll around the resort town
  • Go bird-watching
  • Ride a horse at The Paddock
  • Learn the history of Fraser’s Hill on the Heritage Trail
  • Sit down for a traditional British ‘cream tea’
  • Go hiking on one of the many trails
  • Take a dip in the cold water at Jeriau Waterfall
  • Tee off at the Royal Fraser’s Hill Golf Club (there’s also a mini golf course for kids)

14. Bukit Tinggi

Bukit Tinggi Pahang Malaysia

Bukit Tinggi is yet another cooler-climate destination in Malaysia. Situated on a highland at the height of 1,000 metres above sea level, it is regarded as one of the top hill stations in the country, offering a zenful retreat amidst a dense forest.

The most popular attraction here is the Colmar Tropical Resort, which features a 16th century French-style architecture, complete with French bakeries and cobblestone streets. This place appeals more to local and Asian tourists who would like to get a feel of Europe.

There are currently no public transports that go to Bukit Tinggi, so the best way to get there is by driving.

Things to Do in Bukit Tinggi

  • Pretend you’re in Europe at Colmar Tropical Resort
  • Rent a kimono and drink an authentic cup of Japanese green tea at the Japanese Gardens
  • Indulge in a spa session
  • Play with animals at the petting zoo
  • Relax at the botanical garden
  • Get an adrenaline rush at Colmar Adventure Park (ziplining, canopy walk, rock climbing, and paintball)

15. Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary

Kuala Gandah elephant sanctuary

Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary was established in 1989 and is the only one of its kind in Malaysia. It is dedicated to taking in elephants orphaned by poaching or logging, and rehabilitating them until they can be reintroduced to the wild. It is worth noting that this sanctuary does not allow riding on the elephant for any purpose.

The center is also the base for the Elephant Relocation Team, which helps locate, subdue, and then translocate elephants from areas that have been encroached by plantations to other suitable habitats throughout the Peninsula, such as Taman Negara. Over the past 25 years, the center has helped prevent further decline of the elephant population by relocating more than 300 wild elephants.

A visit to this sanctuary will make a fun and educational outing for the whole family. However, it is not easy to get to without a car, so make sure you plan accordingly.

Things to Do at Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary

  • See the rare Borneo Pygmy elephants
  • Learn about Asian elephants and what is being done to protect them
  • Take part in the feeding and bathing of the elephants
  • Help contribute toward the conservation of elephants in the country
  • Experience the local indigenous culture

16. Bentong

Bentong Pahang

Bentong rarely makes the list of popular tourist attractions in Malaysia. You’ll probably see more locals here than foreign tourists, which adds to its authenticity.

A secluded small town located very close to Bukit Tinggi and Genting Highlands, it provides a respite from the hectic city life in Kuala Lumpur. Observe the local lifestyle and surround yourself with nature at the same time. You can get to Bentong from Kuala Lumpur by bus.

Things to Do in Bentong

  • Hike through forest reserves
  • Have a picnic at Chamang Waterfall
  • Ride an ATV or try archery at Bilut Extreme Park
  • Soak in Bentong Hot Spring
  • Feast on durians at one of the many durian orchards
  • Try local delicacies at Bentong Walk and Bentong Market
  • Buy locally grown ginger and soy sauce as souvenirs

Sunway Lagoon comprises 6 parks (2 water parks and 4 dry parks), with over 90 attractions spread across 88 acres. There’s something for everyone — even the most hardcore of adrenaline junkies.

Sunway Lagoon boasts one of the world’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge and Asia’s first Nickelodeon water theme park. With all of those different rides, visiting Sunway Lagoon can easily take up the whole day. You can get there by bus from Kuala Lumpur.

Ten things to do in Klang – a day trip from Kuala Lumpur

1 day trip in klang valley

October is a great time to make a day trip to Klang, about an hour by KTM Kommuter from KL Sentral Station in Kuala Lumpur. The area is also well served by the Federal Highway, NKVE and KESAS Highways as well, but as parking is not easy to find and if you do find it, you need to pay by ticket, hourly. This is a good reason to leave the car at home, or park at one of the stations along the way and catch the train. Catch the train heading for Pelabuhan Klang (Port Klang) and get out at Klang .

October is good because this is the period leading up to the Hindu Festival of Lights Diwali, commonly called Deepavali in Malaysia. The festival in 2015 falls on 10th November. With one of the most extensive and well stocked Little India enclaves in the country, this is the best time and place to buy Indian clothes, jewellery, cooking needs and Indian sweets.

Klang isn’t likely to ever win the ‘tidy towns’ award, unfortunately, but in the older part of the town on the South side of the river are plenty of architectural remnants of the interaction of the different communities that built the area from the mid 1800s. So. What to see?

Royal Gallery Museum

As you walk along left side of Jln Stesen, you will come to an elegant double story white building. This government building, designed along with a number of well known buildings in Kuala Lumpur by A B Hubback, has a chequered history since it was built in 1909. It has served as administrative offices both pre and post Independence and during the Japanese Occupation. After the new Selangor capital was built in the mid 1970s it housed police and town council offices.

IMG_8407

When the  Chartered Bank opened its doors in 1874 just over the road beside the Royal Gallery building, it was the first bank in Klang. The building was well made and when the bank sold the building and moved some years ago, it sat empty for quite a few years before taking on a new life as a store selling Indian clothing and goods. Although some of the original external decoration is difficult to find, the renovations uncovered a beautiful wooden staircase that was formerly hidden by a partition wall behind the banking tellers. Many of the internal features are still visible and as you browse among the beautiful saris, look up and around at the architectural details.

Istana Alam Shah, the Sultan’s Palace

IMG_8344

The Istana, which is rumoured to be haunted, was opened in 1960, replacing an original wooden building which was badly affected by termites. The Royal Mausoleum , where a number of the recent Royals, including the previous Sultan and Tunku Ampuan, are buried, can just be seen to the left of the main building. Until the mid 1980s, the Sultan, who had never favoured this as a primary residence, but used it as an office and for Investitures, had a 9 hole golf course in front of the palace. This made way for a rather impressive extension of the grounds (upward) to make more room for garden parties and events. The palace was also extensively renovated and enlarged. The  Sultan Suleiman mosque beside the Mausoleum was opened in 1932 but is currently closed for renovation.

Hospital Hill

Convent

From the Palace, walk over the hill opposite and as you go round the hill you can look over the town while enjoying a walk in the shade. This is the site of the old Klang Hospital, an old low wooden building open to all, including assorted cats and pigeons. There was much relief when the new General Hospital was opened in 1985, some distance away and the old Hospital Hill gradually became a park.

Little India and the Chetty Padang

IMG_0507

MPK and Raja Mahadi’s Fort

Gate to Raja Mahadis fort

If you walk up beside the padang, you can see the Majlis Perbandaran Klang (Town Council) buildings directly in front of you, but over the road. It is definitely NOT recommended to try and cross the road, so take a stroll around the road and back down towards the bridge. The hill on which the MPK building now stands, is the site of Raja Mahadi’s Fort , the white entrance of which is to the left of the bridge entrance. Raja Mahadi and Raja Abdullah were fighting for control of the rich tin traffic during the tin wars of the mid 1800s, with Raja Mahadi holding the high ground, and Raja Abdullah in his warehouse (Gedung Raja Abdullah) down by the river in town. In the end, Raja Mahadi prevailed with the help of Tengku Kudin (Tengku Diauddin) whose name lives on in the road of his name.

Too bored with Kuala Lumpur and want to explore new places nearby?

You are at the right place.

Having been an expat residing in KL for over 2 years, I’ve uncovered a lot of fantastic places for a short getaway from KL.

In this post, I will share with you  16 ideas for a great weekend getaway from Kuala Lumpur in Selangor and other areas that I have visited.

Read until the end to get more ideas for your bucket list.

Table of Contents

Best short getaway from KL in Selangor

Places for a day trip from kl in other areas, 1. kuala selangor.

Only less than a 2-hour drive from Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Selangor is the best destination for a short getaway from KL in Selangor.

In this fishing village, you will have the chance to witness mesmerizing natural phenomena such as blue tears, sky mirrors, fireflies, and beautiful sunset views during eagle feeding activity.

The only way to join these activities is to book a boat tour and here below are some reliable and cheap tour packages :

  • Eagle Feeding, Fireflies, Blue Tears: link to book
  • Sky mirror: link to book
  • Kuala Selangor tour from Kuala Lumpur: link to book

In addition, if you are a big fan of seafood, then there are tons of fresh seafood restaurants in Kuala Selangor. I have tried a few of them and highly recommend Sin Hai Ping restaurant. In this restaurant, I had crab porridge for only RM55, cheaper and fresher compared to the other place.

For more details, you can read my post: KL to Kuala Selangor trip review

2. Pulau Ketam

Pulau Ketam (which means “Crab Island”) is a small island located off the coast of Port Klang, Selangor, Malaysia. To me, it looks like Venice (Italy) at some angles because of its beautifully painted houses and turquoise waters.

Besides, Pulau Ketam is also renowned for its seafood. There is a whole heap of seafood restaurants in the local market (but the price is a little high).

To see detailed reviews about Pulau Ketam, you can watch the video above or read my post: Pulau Ketam day trip: ferry price, famous food, things to do

3. Sekinchan

Another ideal destination for a weekend getaway from Kuala Lumpur is Sekinchan – a hidden gem located approximately 100 km away from KL.

Sekinchan is known among tourists for its lush green stretches of paddy fields. Taking captivating photos with the backdrop of lush green fields and a blue sky is undoubtedly one of the best things to do here.

Furthermore, Sekinchan boasts a charming wishing tree as an additional attraction. Visitors have the opportunity to write their wishes on a red ribbon and attempt to toss it as high as they can onto the tree, with the hope that their wishes will be granted.

4. Kranching waterfall

best-staycation-in-selangor-kranching-waterfall

If you are looking for a natural short getaway from KL in Selangor, consider Kranching Waterfall – a great place for hiking or a BBQ.

There are 7 cascades of waterfalls. You can either hike to the top level or just stop at the 1 st or 2 nd level and prepare BBQ there.

Be noticed that the hiking trail in Kranching Waterfall is at a medium level of difficulty. From level 1 st to level 5 th is pretty easy, it starts to be more slippery and harder from level 6 th .

For me, I only reached level 6 th because it took me a few hours and I was pretty hungry and tired at that time.

Additionally, I observed that many people bring food for a BBQ at the base of the waterfall. It appears to be a fun and relaxing experience to have a BBQ next to a waterfall

Entrance ticket: RM5/ foreigners, RM3/ local

5. Bukit Tinggi

Xem bài viết này trên Instagram                       Bài viết do maiii_travelog (@maiii_travelog) chia sẻ

Bukit Tinggi, also known as Berjaya Hills, is a great idea for a short getaway from KL as well.

In Bukit Tinggi, you can explore the colorful French Village and the tranquil Japanese Village. Besides, you can also join some adventurous activities in Colmar Adventure Park. Other places to visit in Bukit Tinggi include the Botanical Garden and the Rabbit Farm.

6. Batu Caves

Batu Caves is a Hindu cave temple located in Gombak, Selangor. It is one of the most famous Hindu cave temples in the world which attracts a large number of devotees (mostly from India and Sri Lanka), especially during the Thaipusam festival in January or February.

Not only a religious place, Batu Caves is also a great place for Instagrammable photos with its colorful steps.

To come to Batu Caves, you can take a KTM train from KL Sentral. The journey takes around 30 minutes and costs RM13/2 ways.

rafting-hidden-gems-in-selangor

Known as one of the best-grade rapids in Southeast Asia, the Selangor River (Sungai Selangor) is an amazing place for a white water rafting trip which is just a 1-hour drive from KL. This is a super thrilling and exciting activity to do either with family or friends.

To join the activity, you need to join a tour with a guide. Here is the link to book the tour: Click here . The tour includes snacks, lunch, a life jacket, and all the necessary stuff for a rafting journey.

11. Farm in the city

If you are an animal lover, Farm in the City would be a perfect weekend getaway from Kuala Lumpur in Selangor for you. There are over 100 animal species ranging from pets (rabbits, guinea pigs, etc) to exotic animals (the world’s smallest horse, the world’s smallest fox – Fennec Fox, white peacock, etc).

Moreover, visitors can also visit the vegetable farm with more than 60 tropical fruit trees and rare flora.

With these provided, Farm in the City is an ideal place for families with kids to visit at the weekend where your kids can learn about animals and have fun at the same time.

And do check the weather before coming here, I came here on a rainy day and could not explore much of it.

Regarding the ticket, I bought the ticket directly at the entrance at RM58/foreigner & RM39/Mykad holder. Later on, I realized that online booking is cheaper by RM2-3… too late :(. Here is the link to book tickets online: Farm in the city ticket

12. Selangor Fruit Valley

Another place for a short trip from KL is Selangor Fruit Valley.

This farm houses hundreds of species of plants including fruit trees, herbal plants, vegetables, and flower plants. In addition, they also raise some animals on the farm such as deer, rabbits, hedgehogs, etc.

Furthermore, if you want a more exciting experience, try a boat ride – that was the highlight of my trip. The driver was so skillful and made us almost want to cry (just kidding… it was veryyy funnn). The boat ride costs only RM35/5 people.

Ipoh is a place for either food hunters, history lovers, or nature enthusiasts.

What I love most about Ipoh is probably the food. There are tons of delicacies in Ipoh, notably chicken bean spouts, salted chicken, tou fu fa, and dim sum.

Besides, with a history deeply rooted in the tin mining industry of the late 19th century, Ipoh boasts a unique blend of colonial architecture and contemporary urban developments. Some historical attractions in Ipoh that you can visit are the Ipoh railway station, Birch Memorial Clock Tower, and Han Chin Pet Soo Museum.

For nature lovers, this is your heaven. Don’t you know that Ipoh has over 30 cave temples to explore? In this kind of place, you can admire the beauty of the caves as well as the religious temple built inside the caves.

Public transport ridership goes up

Sunday, 16 Jun 2024

KUALA LUMPUR: May was a great month for public transport in the country as the combined train and bus ridership in Klang Valley exceeded one million a day.

The latest ridership figures released by Prasarana Malaysia Bhd, the parent of Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd and Rapid Bus Sdn Bhd, show that more than a million journeys were made using the LRT, MRT and monorail in the Klang Valley that month, the highest ever.

Surprisingly, even bus journeys in Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Kuantan also showed significant increases (see table).

On May 29, Rapid Rail recorded its highest ever rail usage when 1,004,591 journeys were performed using its train network alone, marking a new high since its founding.

The breakdown of ridership shows the Kelana Jaya LRT is still leading as the most-used urban rail line, with 287,102 journeys, followed by the Kajang MRT (274,302), the Ampang/Sri Petaling LRT (224,184), the Putrajaya MRT (157,767) and the KL Monorail (61,236).

According to Rapid Rail, this figure is 35% higher than the corresponding period in 2023, which had a total of 739,818 journeys across its network.

“We are proud to achieve this figure six months earlier than our target, and it shows the warm support from city dwellers for our services,” said Rapid Rail CEO Amir Hamdan when contacted.

He said the increase is the result of various incremental improvements, such as increasing train frequencies on the Kelana Jaya and Kajang lines, the top two urban rail lines in the country.

Other improvements, not in any particular order, include Rapid Rail’s embrace of more proactive maintenance regimes, where technicians don’t wait for breakdowns but take a more active role in monitoring the condition of machinery before they reach their breaking point.

“There is also more customer service training for frontliners,” he said, adding that there is also a lot of first-time users on weekends nowadays.

“We get requests from users on how to reach particular spots, and in this regard, we teach our frontliners how to respond,” said Amir.

Ridership was also boosted by the opening of new attractions along the alignment, such as the Tun Razak Exchange, as well as the hosting of large events like the KL Book Fest at Kuala Lumpur’s World Trade Centre as well as Bukit Bintang, which saw huge groups going there by train.

Other enhancements that contributed to a better commuting experience include improvements to Rapid’s digital “journey planner”, which now also provides information about KTM Komuter (which is not operated by Rapid Rail) to help commuters have an integrated experience.

For regular user Gaby Jeremiah, 22, the Kajang MRT generally delivers a good experience, with frequent trains making it easy for her to plan her travels to the office.

“Additionally, the station is conveniently connected to the office building, allowing for a comfortable walk,” she said.

However, she believes improvements can be made to the women-only coach.

“On almost every ride, I would see at least one man standing in the women’s coach.

“It would take a brave woman to tell him to move to the general coach, but often, men ignore the women and pretend they didn’t hear anything.

“While it may seem like a small issue to some, it does threaten the safety of women who have intentionally chosen the women’s coach to avoid potential harassment.

“Additionally, there should be better traffic control especially during peak hours when people are packed shoulder to shoulder or rushing into the MRT. Standing like packed sardines can be potentially dangerous and guards should be present to manage the human flow,” Jeremiah added.

Industry observers said Prasarana still has a lot of work to do before ridership becomes consistently high, or even higher, when the Shah Alam line (LRT3) opens by the middle of 2025.

Ong Dee Keat, head of rail operations department and simulation expert at Rail Systems Engineering Sdn Bhd, said acceptance of public transport is improving in the face of the fuel subsidy rationalisation and spurred by growing traffic congestion.

“Riding on the increasing ridership trend, we need to put in efficient scheduling of train services to further improve passenger experience.

“From conception stage, scheduling can contribute to the overall decision-making process for policymakers and the government. It will be able to determine the number of train services that is required to satisfy the passenger demand forecast (normally spanning over 30 years).

“This, in turn, justifies the cost and benefits of a new line while developing connectivity based on the choice of alignment and location of intermediate and interchange stations.

“When the schedules of trains are planned in a comprehensive, inclusive and holistic manner, it can bring a multiplier effect to the overall public transport system, thanks to the improved connections, connectivity and confidence in the train service delivery.

“A good example is when a passenger arrives at an interchange station, the next connecting train will arrive within minutes,” said Ong. “A good connection enables a short waiting time and seamless changeover to connecting trains (if possible, at adjacent platforms). However, without regular train services, good connections will never happen.”

Ong further stressed that good connections within railways will have a multiplier effect on the overall public transportation system.

“This is because other modes of transport, for example buses, will also be able to reap the benefits of an increase in ridership when they connect to the train station. More people are brought closer to public transport as the first- and last-mile connectivity is further enhanced.

“In addition, this also retains buses as the feeder system – ferrying passengers to and from the train stations – since a train’s carrying capacity is higher than a bus,” he added.

Wan Md Hazlin Agyl Wan Hassan, a former planning official at the now-defunct Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD), said more players need to play their role, especially local authorities, as they have great influence over things like walkability and accessibility to train stations.

“Improving the connectivity to stations, supported by other infrastructure like walkways and parking, will definitely increase ridership.

“Bus services’ punctuality is important too, which means we need to start working on protecting our buses from normal traffic to avoid them being stuck in traffic. The whole idea is to make public transport attractive and also make the first-and-last mile gap as seamless as possible,” he said.

“It is encouraging to see ridership on an uptrend for the past few months, and we expect May’s all-time high to be topped when the government actually removes broad-based subsidies for RON95.

“In the meantime, rail operators – including KTMB and ERL – must work hard to ensure that they are ready at all fronts, from engineering and maintenance to scheduling and customer service, so that all parts of the system work well in a unified manner,” added Wan Agyl.
