10-Day Traveller

Packing List For a 10-Day Trip

Packing can be a daunting task for anyone going on a vacation. There are people who either pack days in advance, some leaving it last-minute, and others who don’t seem to be fazed by it at all.

I’m probably someone in the middle. I usually pack the day or night before then leave a note of a few things to remember before getting out of the door such as chargers, toothbrushes, skincare, make-up, closing the windows, and turning off the power box.

When I go and make a packing list for a 10-day trip, it differs from the type of trip, destination, season, and who I’ll be travelling with.

For example, I usually pack light in summer, but I check a bag for a winter trip. If I’m going to Northern Europe, I make sure I have everything and that I don’t spend a dime on basic items since most things are expensive in Scandinavia.

But if I’m going to Asia, I often decide that I’ll buy my toiletries there and save space. If I’m travelling with a friend or family, I know we can share a checked bag and save some money.

In this article, I will be sharing a list of what to pack for a 10-day trip including clothing, footwear, toiletries, electronics, travel documents, and packing tips.

WHAT SIZE OF LUGGAGE FOR A 10-DAY TRIP

2 images - on the left is a woman wearing a yellow shirt is securing her suitcase with the lock clip. On the right is a a guy putting a water bottle in his backpack - Packing List For a 10-Day Trip

It can be hard to decide how big or small your luggage should be for a 10-day trip. It all depends on your travel style, the season, and your budget.

There are people who value having awesome outfits for their trip. At the same time, some don’t mind wearing more casual and comfortable clothing. Not to mention, you must take the season into consideration.

For a short trip like this, a carry-on and a personal bag should be enoug h unless you’re visiting family or friends and want to give them some gifts.

If it’s winter or you plan to do various activities, you probably should consider checking a bag. Let’s say you want to bring waterproof boots or hiking boots, but at the same time, you want regular or casual shows for city walking or going to semi-formal dinners.

Small bag or Checked bag

I’ve done both, and they’re very different experiences. I’ve backpacked for nearly a decade, so fitting my life in a backpack was easy. Travelling with a carry-on was the motto of my life. But since after the pandemic, I’ve travelled with a checked bag.

However, as a carry-on only, I had to do my laundry at least twice a week, and my clothes were so worn out in just 6 months since I washed them too often. On the good side, I saved lots of money by not paying for a checked bag and running to the airport to catch my next flight, which was always a success.

On the other hand, a suitcase really allows me to bring stylish clothes and pretty much ensures that I don’t need to buy stuff at the destination such as toiletries . I also have enough space for souvenirs and gifts to bring home.

To make a decision, you have to ask yourself a few things:

  • do I have the budget for a checked bag (round trip)
  • how stylish do I want to be
  • do I need the extra space for gifts and other travel items or can I buy that when I land

For the carry-on bag, you also have the freedom to choose between a 40L backpack or a 25 inches (56 cm) suitcase.

HOW MUCH CLOTHES TO PACK FOR A 10-DAY VACATION

I feel like ten days is neither a long trip nor a short one. So, what I think works best is you either pack enough clothes not to do any laundry or pack a 5-day worth of clothes and expect to do laundry at least once.

One thing I always recommend though, always pack at least 10 sets of underwear and socks since jeans and shirts can usually be worth it for two days if you weren’t sweating too much the day before or travelling in winter.

PACKING LIST FOR A 10-DAY TRIP

Of course, what you bring will change depending on the season. If you’re unsure what to pack for a 10-day trip or you don’t usually travel, perhaps this list will give you some ideas.

Here, you will find some basic items people pack depending on their gender. Plus a list of documents, toiletries, and electronics that you must bring.

TIPS ON HOW TO PACK A CARRY-ON FOR 10 DAYS OR A CHECKED LUGAGGE

If you don’t travel often, packing on a limited space, or packing for multiple people (families with your children), these tips will help you pack properly depending on what type of luggage you plan to use:

2 images - on the left is a guy packing a suitcase. on the right is a woman packing an overflowing suitcase

Fill those space

This is when you fill things with other items such as putting socks inside the shoes. This is also suitable for when your backpack or carry-on has outside pockets, make sure to put something in there.

It could be your travel-sized toothpaste, chargers, or the bulky sunglasses case. These tips for packing list for 10 days will answer how to pack a carry-on for 10 days or a checked suitcase.

I believe in wearing oversized clothes such as jackets, sweaters, hats, scarves, and of course shoes. Sure, you might get too warm inside the plane, but you can easily place your jacket under your seat or find some nooks and crannies in the overhead bins.

Those neck pillows and bulky headphones? Wear them.

Bring a cloth bag

Yes, those bags that supermarkets and clothing stores don’t seem to get tired of selling us shopping bags. Undeniably, some of them are really cute.

Bring a cloth bag since those are easy to fold up and pack without taking up space. The extra clothes you just wore on the flight, after the plane took off – you can put those together in that cloth bag, and voila – you have an extra bag.

You can place it under the seat in front of you or use it as a pillow for the long flight ahead of you.

Roll up and more

It’s already common knowledge that rolling up with clothes is a great hack for packing. But there’s another one I found proven to be a good idea – shove everything in!

My travel partner doesn’t believe in folding clothes or rolling them up when packing. Instead, he just shoved all the fabric inside his backpack or suitcase. His explanation of this is that, when you roll up or fold your clothes and it’s time to put them inside your bag or suitcase, there are little spaces and caveats not being filled up.

But if you shove and push all the clothes and fabrics into a backpack or suitcase, you know that those spaces are filled up.

I put this to a test and tried the same amount of clothes in two styles, and I have to agree, his solution isn’t half bad.

While I understand his reasoning, I don’t think my brain could handle bundling up my clean clothes into a pile without order . So, for you, decide what works best!

Vacuum-sealed packing cubes

I once tried those vacuum-sealed clear plastic bags. While they did a great job, I don’t think they’re suitable for a vacation.

First, you need a vacuum to take the air out, and most hotels won’t really lend you one or have none available for guests. Two, you can bring more clothes but your carry-on will be too heavy to carry or even go past the weight limit for carry-ons (in Asia and some parts of Europe, carry-ons get weighed at the airport).

Plastic vacuum-sealed bags work great if you’re moving houses or across the continent. It’s when you pay the shipping cost based on how many moving boxes you have rather than the weight.

Instead of that, use vacuum-sealed packing cubes. These don’t need an actual vacuum. The zippers take the air out while keeping your packing cube at a certain size or shape. One thing though, is that you need to have decent skills in packing and folding your clothes in the packing cubes to maximise the space.

Buy some at the destinations

A packing list for a 10-day trip sometimes means not bringing everything. I believe in not bringing too much toiletries or not at all . If you don’t have sensitive skin or hair, you can buy shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, soap or shower gel, toothpaste, mouthwash, and even a toothbrush at your destination.

This will save you lots of space. But of course, if your flight is more than 5 hours, make sure to have a small dental kit with a small toothbrush, toothpaste, and a small bottle of mouthwash.

Other than that, there’s no reason to fill your already limited-space carry-on with items that you can buy at your destination.

Maximise your pockets

When choosing an “outfit” for your flight, let go of the idea of dressing up nice. Instead, dress up smartly . Smart means where you have plenty of pockets to fill.

I once wore those hiking shorts with 6 pockets on a budget airline flight. The shorts were ugly for sure, but I was able to get my Kindle, passport, wallet, and chargers.

If you’re travelling for winter and planning to bring your winter jacket, choose one that has lots of pockets too. I know people who place their laptops, a book, a water bottle, and even some extra clothes,

Personal bag

Most airlines allow you to bring a personal bag regardless if whether you purchase a checking bag or a carry-on bag. A personal bag is a small bag that can fit under the seat. This could be a purse, a small backpack, a laptop bag, or a baby bag.

You can maximise this personal bag by using a bag that is made of cloth or easy to bend around such as a string bag or those cloth bags you use for shopping.

My backpack that I’ve had for nearly a decade now is a 20L backpack, with a dimension of 17.3 x 11.4 x 6.7 inches (44 x 29 x 17 cm) that fits perfectly under the seat. In this backpack, I can put my laptop, an 8-inch laptop, a Kindle, chargers for those, a wallet, travel documents, and other basic items such as makeup, hand sanitiser, snacks, and even an extra clean set of clothes.

With the right backpack or cloth bag , you can bring more stuff in your personal bag that will be useful for your 10-day trip.

Packing for a trip can be a fun and simultaneously exhausting part of travelling. Deciding what to bring, how much to bring, and what luggage to take is a very important decision.

You don’t have to bring too much stuff but at the same time not bringing enough is a very fine line. If there’s one thing that I learnt from other travellers, it is that I notice that they bring things that they can simply buy at the destination.

So, if you don’t have sensitive skin or hair, you can leave the buying of soap and shampoo when you arrive and decide to leave these behind when you fly home. This will save you space in your luggage.

I hope that this packing list for a 10-day trip has been helpful in deciding what to bring and not to bring for you trip.

Perfect Your Packing Lite: How to Pack a Carry On Bag for 10 Days

How to pack a carry on bag for 10 days.

Wondering how to pack a carry on bag for 10 days? Like, is it actually possilbe? Regardless of if you are a chronic over packer, or dabbling in packing lite, you can make 10 days in a carry on work. At She Packs Lite, we’re here to help your travel plans come true and we’re here with a packing guide that will allow you to breeze through your travels (and save on bag fees) so you can experience all there is to do at your destination.

Fitting enough for 10 days into a little bag might seem like an impossible task. But fear not, with this guide and our 5-4-3-2-1 travel capsule wardrobe method , we’ll show you the easy way to pack a carry-on for 10 days or any other upcoming trip that might be on your horizon.

Why carry on?

Let’s get real, carrying heavy bags around on your hard-earned vacation time isn’t fun. It doesn’t matter if it’s weekend trips or month-long excursions. If you can master packing light, (and we think that you can) your trip will be even more stress-free than you imagined. And bonus points: you’ll avoid all of the outrageous baggage fees that airlines are charging nowadays.

Traveling with only carry-on bags also eliminates all of the time spent waiting at baggage claim for your bags to emerge. Standing there waiting for your bags feels like an eternity when all that’s standing between you and your vacation is the slowest roundabout in the world. And somehow your bag always comes out last? But if you carry on, all you have to do is get off the plane and get right to your plans.

Planning Tips

Start with a realistic packing list .

We get it, when you’re going on a long trip, you want to make sure that you have everything that you might need as well as some different options for clothes each day. But the first thing you need to do if you want to know how to pack a carry on bag for 10 days is get realistic about what you actually need to bring with you. You don’t need 10 different pairs of shoes to go with 40 different clothing items. Shoes are bulky and they take up the most space. We never take more than 3 pairs. You also don’t need to wear different cloting items each day. With our mix and match 54321 system, you will have more than enough outfits.

Make sure your carry-on bag and personal item are the appropriate sizes

An important part of traveling with only carry-on luggage is making sure your bags actually fit where they’re supposed to. For airline travel, this usually means that your personal bag needs to fit under the seat in front of you and your roller bag needs to fit in the overhead above your seat. A good rule of thumb is to make sure you’re familiar with your airline’s carry-on restrictions prior to your next trip so you don’t find yourself having to check your bag unexpectedly.

Be sure your bags are comfortable to carry

The kind of bag you choose is just personal preference. When you fly carry-on, it’s usually a good idea to have a rolling suitcase as your carry-on and either a duffle bag with a strap, shoulder bag, or backpack as your personal item. A duffle bag will give you a little bit more packing room if that’s what you need, but some people prefer to have a bag with backpack straps so you don’t kill your shoulders walking around the airport. Having two straps on your personal item will help distribute the weight a bit more so you don’t have sore shoulders for your vacation.

Plan activities and special occasions

At She Packs Lite, we like to try to stick to our 5-4-3-2-1 travel capsule wardrobe method of packing. However, one of the challenges to packing lite is when you have to pack for specific events or activities that you’re planning on doing while you’re away. With careful planning, you can often fit the dress for that fancy party in your capsule.

Check the weather at your destination ahead of time

Checking the weather ahead of time is important to make sure you’re packing appropriately for your trip. For example, if you’re going somewhere that is warm and will stay warm the entire time you’re there, you can probably pack one pair of pants and one light jacket and save some space. Packing a carry-on suitcase for a 10-day trip in colder weather might be a bit more challenging, but not impossible by any means. This just means that you’ll have to pack more versatile items that you can wear more than once. For example, pick a good coat or jacket that you can wear every day and that matches all of the outfits that you bring. That way you don’t have to sacrifice space in your bag for a bulky sweater or coat.

Decide if you’re going to do laundry at some point on your trip

Doing laundry midway through your 10-day trip is a great way to pack less and still be able to wear cleans clothes every day. A lot of Airbnb’s that you might stay in have an available washing machine and dryers that you can use and some hotels may offer a laundry service as well. This way you can follow our travel capsule method and you can make the most of the space you do have. It also helps you to not have to lug around dirty laundry for the majority of your trip.

Packing Tips

Start with bulky items at the bottom.

When you’re finally ready to start packing, start with the bulkier items first. It’s much easier to stuff smaller items in empty spaces between shoes than it is to try to fit your shoes in last. When space is an issue, you’ll find that you can fit things like pairs of underwear in your tennis shoes at the bottom of your bag and free up some space elsewhere for other things that you might need.

Wear your bulky items on the plane

If you’re strapped for space but absolutely want to bring those boots or chunky sandals, wear them on the plane instead of packing them in your suitcase. The same goes for larger jackets or coats. Even though they’re just one item, they can take up a lot of space in your bag, and it’s important that you make smart decisions about what you pack when you’re trying to fit your 10 day travel capsule in a carry-on bag.

Invest in some compression packing cubes

Compression packing cubes make a huge difference in space. These will squish down all of your clothes and keep them in nice, compact containers that fit together like a puzzle in your suitcase. Packing cubes will help you make the most of a smaller bag and still be able to fit all of the clothing items that you want.

Try the rolling method

Another great way to maximize space when you pack clothes is to roll everything instead of folding it. When you roll small items like tank tops and lightweight t-shirts, you can usually stuff them in between a pair of pants, which is an excellent way to make sure you’re making the most of your space.

Make sure all liquid toiletries are travel-sized

A surefire way to get held up at airport security is to leave full-sized toiletries and liquids in your bag. If you’re not used to traveling carry-on, you might just throw your big bottles of shampoo and conditioner in your checked bag and forget about them. Not only will TSA take those and throw them out, but you’ll also be out those items when you get home. Having only travel-size liquid toiletries is a must for carry-on travel.

Since 10 days is a longer trip, we recommend having all of your essential toiletries in travel-sized containers to make it through security. These items have to be three ounces or smaller and fit in a quart-sized clear bag. We like to keep these right at the top of our small personal bag so you can pull them out quickly to go through security. If you’re going to be away on a longer trip, we also recommend purchasing larger toiletries when you get to your final destination. You can get items like sunscreen, shampoo, conditioner, and contact solution at local drugstores.

Keep all essentials and travel documents in your personal item

One of the nice things about traveling with just a carry-on bag is that you can have all of your belongings with you at all times. However, one possible scenario that may come up is that you arrive at the gate, are in a later boarding group, and the plane runs out of overhead space for your roller bag.

In case this happens you want to be prepared by having all of your essentials in your personal item. This includes your toiletry bag, medications, travel documents, any valuables, phone chargers, and some extra underwear and pairs of socks (just in case). Basically, anything that you need to have easy access to while you’re traveling. You don’t want to get separated from your bag and learn the hard way that you should always keep your toothbrush and clean underwear with you at all times while traveling.

How to pack a carry on bag for 10 days

Bring versatile shoes .

Since shoes are some of the items that take up the most space when you’re packing your bag you want to be strategic and bring only pairs that work with multiple outfits. In our travel capsule wardrobe guide , you’ll see that we recommend only bringing three pairs of shoes for every trip. The kind of trip you’re going on will have a lot of influence over which pairs of shoes make the cut.

For example, if you’re going on a business trip, you most likely won’t need hiking boots and you’ll need more work-appropriate heels and flats. However, if you’re going on an outdoor excursion through South America, it’s a good idea to have more sensible footwear and you can probably leave your nicer shoes at home.

Pick a color palette

Sticking to a single color palette while packing your travel capsule will allow you to create different outfits with a limited number of pieces. If you’re struggling to match different items, we recommend picking neutral colors. The objective of a travel capsule wardrobe is to mix up different items to create new outfits so you can still have some travel style while you’re away. We think that’s one of the great features of our packing guides, your travel wardrobe doesn’t have to be boring!

Here is an example of the packing I am doing for a 10+ day trip to Portugal this summer. As you can see, the color palette is in the dark blue family, really navy and neutrals.

You can see more about this capsule at the post: What to Wear in Portugal this Summer .

Customize your pieces based on the time of year you’re traveling

Since the 5-4-3-2-1 method of packing only allows for a certain number of tops and bottoms when you’re packing, make sure that all of those items that you’re choosing are appropriate for the weather where you’re going to be. For example, if you’re going somewhere warm over the summer months, your four bottoms will most likely be pairs of shorts rather than jeans or slacks. You’ll probably also pack more casual wear than you will during colder months since you’ll want to stay cool and comfortable.

Choose outer layers that you can wear with everything

Even if you’re traveling during warmer months, it’s still a great idea to have some kind of jacket or sweater that you can throw on over any outfit in case you need it. However, to ensure you’re not using too much of the little space you have available, try to pick something that will go with every outfit you have packed. This is, again, where the color palette comes in handy. If all of your outfits are similar colors, you should be able to bring one jacket or sweater that compliments every outfit you have, and then you’ll be prepared for anything.

FAQ : How to Pack a Carry On Bag for 10 Days

How many clothes do i need for a 10-day trip .

You don’t need to pack as much as you’d think. Our 5-4-3-2-1 packing method works for every trip, even longer ones like we’re talking about here. If you want to fit everything in a carry-on, using a mix and match travel capsule will help you have a huge variety of outfits in a small space!

What size bag do I need for a 10-day trip?

At She Packs Lite, we’re firm believers that if you follow our packing guide methods, a carry-on is all you need for a 10-day trip. The benefits of flying with a carry-on bag, freedom from lugging heavy bags, freedom from baggage claims, ability to focus on the experiences are well worth it!

Is it better to roll clothes or fold?

This depends on your personal packing style and how much space you have to work with. Some people prefer packing cubes because they allow you to keep certain types of clothing or certain outfits together in the same container, but others prefer the rolling method because it allows you to fit a little more into a small bag. We often do both! Use packing cubes and roll our clothes in them.

Can I bring two carry-ons on a plane?

You can’t bring two carry-on-sized bags in the cabin of a plane without having to check one of them or possibly facing some extra cost. The good news is most airlines will allow you to have one carry-on bag and one personal item. For longer trips and if you’re only traveling with carry-ons, you’ll probably want your personal item to be something bigger than a tote bag so you can have a little extra room for the little things you need to pack like your phone charger.

What is not allowed in a carry-on bag?

The best way to know what you can and cannot bring in your carry-on bag if you’re not familiar with the rules is to check out the TSA’s website , which goes into great detail about what is prohibited in carry-on bags. Like we mentioned above, one thing that you can’t have in a carry-on bag is liquids that are not travel-sized and in a plastic bag. You also can’t bring full plastic water bottles through security, even if they’re sealed, so bringing a collapsible water bottle that you can refill is a smart choice as well.

Hello! With plus size clothing, are there any suggestions for packing lite, as they are bigger and will take up more space.?

Do you have a particular season in mind? I talk alot about 5-4-3-2-1 packing but have personally been toying with the idea of going even lighter. Like 4-3-2-1 4 tops 3 bottoms 2 dresses/shoes 1 bag/jacket/hat

That takes a few pieces out. Your strategy of being able to mix and match outfits will be important here. I’d also really focus on lightweight fabrics that breath and travel well.

I did find this article that you might find helpful: https://www.businessinsider.com/packing-tips-from-a-plus-size-traveler-2017-3

Hi Anne, Thank you for shepackslite. com! I was scrambling for advice beyond my travel agent for trip last week to sports card convention flight into Chicago. No check in baggage! I saw a picture of “she packs lite” app. ..(woman on escalator, carrying just a little backpack and her carry on rolled suitcase). I looked at that ad and said yea I can be that kind of woman! I can do Carry on only, but how?! I went through your hints like reading notes from friend and 54321 clothes idea worked great! I compared our 6 day trip to your Portugal list for clothes. I like your site giving honest short reviews on shop easy items for travel. My own find, I had 4 pairs of amazon 24seven comfort apparel knit pants, dark colors light breezy fabric, that dried quickly. I had your amazon packsism clear toiletries bags. Set of 5! Each had different colors and 2 liquids bags each following their 311, better than ziploc. Your top picks again win win with Hardside 21 inch Amazon luggage practically pushed itself fully loaded! Color choices made easy to select out of rows of similar bags being taken from overhead compartments. Your amazing Amazon Belice Nude ballet flats were my only packed shoe choice. Perfect fit for all dinners out every night in Gibsons Chicago at Doubletree Hilton. Keep writing very good ideas with your best pick lists and making them into interesting stories. Remember there are women everywhere who are that girl on escalator traveling because of you with just a small backpack purse and carry on bag! Sincerely, Carol

Carol thank you for such thoughtful feedback. I am glad you are enjoying the content! All my best, Anne

HOW TO FIT EVERYTHING FOR 10 DAYS IN A CARRY-ON IN 13 STEPS

1. choose the right bags.

In general, we recommend using a travel backpack rather than a shoulder bag as your personal item —the Wayfinder 30L is a great option. This saves your back and keeps your arms free.

In terms of your main carry-on, there are several options for both larger travel backpacks and rolling carry-on luggage to choose from.

● Ranger XE 36L Backpack : Ideal for backpackers or anyone on an active trip, this backpack is a compact organizational machine. Ergonomic padded & moisture wicking backpack straps mean it stays comfortable no matter how long your travel day.

● Gear Warrior XE International Carry On : Made to fit even on the most snug budget airlines around the world, this international carry on is, above all, durable. An impact-resistant handle system reduces wobble while oversized treaded wheels keep you trucking when you just need to get where you’re going.

2. Lay Out Everything First

Use your bed as a landing pad and don't even think about pulling your luggage out of the closet yet. You need to get a bird’s-eye view and have the ability to make cuts before throwing everything inside your bag. If you want to see what this looks like, there's lots of inspiration from other travelers out there who have documented their packing process!

Not sure where to begin? Use our complete packing checklist as a starting point for packing—you can’t fit it all, but it will help you start selecting the right items for the trip you have planned.

3. Be Disciplined About Shoes

Think head to toe, except in reverse. Start with your feet and remember you only have two! The trick here is to find a set of kicks to wear casually and for semi-formal situations. Ladies, forget the heels, and gents, wingtips: verboten. Grab the all-purpose set of travel shoes you can wear with jeans or something nicer. If you like to exercise a pair of cross-trainers can also make the cut.

Expert Tip! Stuff your socks into your shoes before packing them in a shoe sac .

4. Check the Weather

Check the weather ahead of time so you can anticipate what clothes you will need and what can stay home. You can still make a carry-on happen, even if you’re packing light for cold weather or even packing rainy season . It helps to know if you will really need that parka or if it's safe to stay at home. Same goes for things like wool socks, mittens, bathing suits, tank tops, and other weather-specific clothing items. If your 10 day trip requires packing bulky sweaters, then compression sacs are your friends—you can squish down even the fluffiest sweater or scarf.

Expert Tip! Wear your bulkiest clothes and shoes on the plane.

5. Think About What You Will Be Doing

It helps to know what you'll be doing at your destination so you can pack clothes you'll actually wear once you're there. If you're going to be doing mostly outdoor activities and spending time around family and friends in a casual setting, you probably won't need that pair of pumps. However, if you're going to formal concerts, parties, or other activities, be sure to pack a nice pair of shoes and a dressier outfit.

6. Choose Versatile Clothes

Go for versatile colors to match with anything, rather than unique pieces only for one outfit. A best practice would be to group each into an outfit, choosing one outfit per day—minus one. In other words, if you’re out for four days you need three days of outfits. Better yet, bring one or two coordinating tops for each bottom piece.

7. Consider Washing Clothes Instead of Bringing More

Instead of insisting on packing a separate outfit for each day, think about washing your clothes partway through the trip instead. Most hotels have laundry facilities or services, and you can even wash your clothes in the hotel sink or tub if you need to. This means you'll be able to pack lighter and avoid adding weight to your bag. It also will make it easier to keep your stuff organized.

8. Maximize Space with Packing Cubes and Compression Bags

Using packing cubes can help you organize everything in your bag and maximize your space. Extra bonus: when you get to the hotel, you can simply lift the travel cubes out of your suitcase and put them in the drawers. Packing cubes can also help you get through airport security faster , allowing for easy removal of liquids and other items during airport security checks.

No need to “live out of a suitcase” when you have extra large to extra small travel cubes . This also lends to super easy packing upon departure, simply pick up your lightweight travel cubes and place them inside your bag again. Skip the annoying process of re-folding a giant pile of clothes you know you’re just going to throw in the laundry anyway.

Wondering which packing cubes are best for your trip? Use our buying guide for packing cubes and compression sacs to suss out which are best for your 10 day trip.

9. Organize the Inside

Jeans and sweaters can be folded and rolled in a large packing cube . All other hanging garments should be carefully folded and compressed into packing folders . Drop your shoes into a shoe sac . Throw the compressor bag into the bottom of the bag and use it as your dirty clothes hamper to collect and compress the load for the return trip. Make sure you're capitalizing on all the available space and not leaving any unnecessary nooks and crannies. One way to take advantage of awkward open space in your bag is to buy a slim cube and an eTool Organizer for cords, jewelry, and other small items. This will allow you to take advantage of the space in-between the handles in the back of your wheeled luggage.

Becoming a Packing Cube Pro : Here’s exactly how to use packing cubes when packing light .

9. Be Smart About Toiletries

Now, let's move on to toiletries. We are not going to bore you with what to bring here. The trick is what NOT to bring. With hotels supplying a bevy of amenities, most items in your medicine cabinet can stay at home. Figuring out which essential toiletries to bring is a great way to make your luggage lighter if you’re worried about weight restrictions.

On the "do not pack" list: hairdryers (most hotels have them, and if you're in a country where you need a different type of outlet, it’s probably easier to buy one there), any toiletry in a full-size bottle (thus not TSA carry-on compliant ), anything breakable, and medicines used only on rare occasions. Investing in a travel bottle set and travel-size toiletries at your local drugstore will help you downsize the medicine cabinet significantly. Then, choose a lightweight toiletry kit to fit your streamlined toiletries.

10. Bring a Kindle Instead of Paper Books

If you enjoy reading for pleasure on vacation, or want to bring multiple guidebooks or language books, bringing a Kindle can save space and weight. Load all of your books onto one device, and buy extra books as needed once you’re there.

11. Bring a Compact Bag for Daily Use

Instead of bringing two bags, consolidate to just one, and bring a foldable/collapsible day bag inside your main bag. This will help you focus on just one piece of luggage, simplifying things and making it easier to watch your stuff in areas where security is an issue .

12. Use Your Smartphone for Picture-Taking

Decide whether you’ll really need a full size camera. Most smartphones have high quality cameras on them now, so unless you really want a high quality camera, sticking to a smartphone can minimize extras and still take great photos .

Expert Tip! A good space-saving idea is to try to wear a top with easy-access pockets. Consolidate your essentials (tickets, ID, and itineraries) into a small RFID wallet for easy but safe access while traveling to your destination. As for hats and gloves, don't pack them: Throw them into the pockets of the jacket you are going to carry.

13. FOLLOW THE 5-4-3-2-1 RULE

Packing for a 10-day trip may seem intimidating, but the 5-4-3-2-1 rule is a game-changer for your packing routine. It’s a simple yet effective strategy that helps you pack efficiently for your trip. Here’s how it works: you pack five sets of tops and bottoms, four dresses, three pairs of shoes, two bags, and one of each accessory you may need.

Following this rule will help you focus on essential clothing items and avoid overpacking, keeping your luggage lighter and more manageable throughout your journey.

WHAT TO PACK FOR A 10-DAY TRIP: PACKING LIST

When preparing for a 10-day trip, it's essential to pack with a plan to ensure you have everything you need without overpacking. Here is how to pack for a 10-day trip:

  • Versatile outfits: Pack a mix of tops, bottoms, and dresses that can be mixed and matched to create multiple outfits, allowing you to pack light while still having variety in your wardrobe.
  • Layering pieces: Include lightweight layers such as cardigans, sweaters, or jackets that you can easily add or remove to accommodate changing weather conditions.
  • Comfortable shoes: Bring comfortable walking shoes for exploring, dressier shoes for evenings out, and sandals or casual shoes for leisurely activities.
  • Travel-size toiletries: Opt for travel-size containers of essential toiletries like shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothpaste, and skincare products to save space and comply with airline regulations.
  • Travel documents: Don't forget to pack your travel documents, such as passports, IDs, boarding passes, travel insurance, and any necessary visas or permits. Keep them organized and easily accessible in a travel wallet or document organizer.
  • Packable accessories: Bring accessories like scarves, hats, and belts that can add style and versatility to your outfits without taking up too much space in your luggage.
  • Basic medications: Pack a small first aid kit with essentials like pain relievers, band-aids, antacids, and any prescription medications you may need.
  • Travel accessories: Include travel accessories for comfort and safety , such as a neck pillow, eye mask, earplugs, and compression socks for long flights or train rides. Don't forget essentials like a reusable water bottle, portable charger, and travel-sized hand sanitizer for convenience and hygiene on the go.

By packing thoughtfully and focusing on versatile items that serve multiple purposes, you can ensure a stress-free and enjoyable 10-day trip, regardless of your destination.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How many clothes do you need for a 10-day trip.

Knowing what to pack for a 10-day trip is essential so you don’t over or under-pack. For a 10-day trip, the number of clothes you need depends on personal preferences and the activities planned. However, it's essential to avoid overpacking to keep your luggage manageable.

A helpful guideline is the 5-4-3-2-1 rule: pack five sets of tops and bottoms, four dresses, three pairs of shoes, two bags, and one of each accessory you might need (sunglasses, hats, belts, etc.). This rule encourages packing efficiently by focusing on essential clothing items while minimizing excess items that may not be necessary for the trip.

How big of a suitcase do you need for a 10-day trip?

The suitcase size you need for a 10-day trip depends on whether you're traveling with a carry-on or a checked bag. There are pros and cons to each option.

Carry-ons offer easy access during flights and no waiting at baggage claim, but they require careful packing due to size restrictions and adherence to TSA rules. Checked bags provide more packing room but incur fees and require waiting at baggage claim. Your choice depends on personal preferences, travel needs, and budget. Consider these factors when deciding between carry-on and checked luggage for your trip. Ultimately, the choice between a carry-on and a checked bag depends on your personal preferences, travel needs, and budget. Consider the pros and cons of each option when deciding which type of suitcase is best for your 10-day trip.

Is a carry-on bag enough for a 10-day trip?

Packing efficiently in a carry-on bag for a 10-day trip is entirely feasible, especially when utilizing packing cubes or compression cubes. These handy organizers maximize space and keep your belongings neatly organized throughout your journey. By strategically arranging your clothing into packing cubes, you can make the most of the limited space while minimizing wrinkles. This method streamlines both packing and unpacking, making it a breeze to transition from one destination to the next.

Additionally, packing cubes facilitate security checks at airports, as they allow for easy inspection of your belongings without the need to unpack your entire bag. Adhering to airline luggage sizes is easier with packing cubes, as they help ensure your bag meets size restrictions. Overall, packing cubes are an essential tool for travelers looking to optimize space, organization, and convenience when traveling with a carry-on bag.

How can I maximize my space for a 10-day trip?

Maximizing space for a 10-day trip requires smart packing techniques. First, knowing whether to roll or fold clothes for packing can help save space and prevent wrinkles. Rolling your clothes instead of folding them will conserve room and allow for better organization within your suitcase.

Additionally, using packing cubes or compression bags is essential. These tools help organize and compress your belongings, freeing up valuable space in your luggage. Another tip is to utilize empty spaces within your luggage, such as stuffing socks inside shoes or filling gaps between items with smaller accessories. By using these strategies, you can make the most of your suitcase's capacity and pack efficiently for your trip.

Planning Your Itinerary

When planning your itinerary, it’s important to consider how much time you’ll spend in each destination. This will help you determine how many clothes and shoes to pack.

To save space in your carry-on bag, invest in packing cubes. These handy organizers allow you to compress your clothes and maximize the space available.

When it comes to international travel , it’s crucial to travel light. You don’t want to be burdened with heavy luggage while exploring new places. Plan ahead and research the weather conditions of your destinations so that you can pack accordingly.

Remember, versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched are key. Stick to a color palette that allows for easy outfit coordination.

By following these travel tips and being mindful of what you pack, you’ll have a stress-free trip filled with adventure and style!

Choosing the Right Luggage

Selecting the appropriate luggage is crucial for a stress-free trip. When it comes to choosing the right luggage, consider your needs and preferences.

A carry-on bag is ideal for short trips as it allows you to pack efficiently and avoid checked baggage fees. Look for a suitcase that offers plenty of space-saving features such as compartments, compression straps, and expandable sections. This will help you maximize the amount of clothes and travel-size toiletries you can bring along.

Personal preference plays a big role too – some people prefer backpacks while others opt for rolling suitcases. Whichever option you choose, make sure it meets your requirements in terms of size, durability, and ease of use.

Additionally, having separate bags or compartments for dirty laundry can keep your clean clothes fresh throughout the trip.

Packing Clothing for Various Weather Conditions

To ensure you’re prepared for any weather conditions, pack clothing that can be easily layered and mixed and matched. When it comes to packing clothing for your 10-day travel adventure, versatility is key.

Start by selecting clothes that can be worn in various ways. Opt for lightweight fabrics that are easy to wash and quick to dry. Pack a few pairs of pants or shorts, depending on the climate you’ll be visiting. Don’t forget to include some dresses or skirts for dressier occasions. Bring a mix of tank tops, t-shirts, and long-sleeved shirts that can be layered as needed.

Remember to pack enough underwear and socks for each day of your trip. If you’re heading somewhere with colder weather, consider bringing thermal layers or sweaters for added warmth. And don’t forget your bathing suits!

Roll your clothes tightly or use compression bags to save space in your carry-on bag.

With these essential items packed, you’ll be ready for whatever weather conditions come your way during your ultimate 10-day travel experience!

Essential Toiletries and Personal Care Items

Don’t forget to pack your must-have toiletries and personal care items, because feeling fresh and confident is key to enjoying every moment of your travel adventure.

When it comes to packing toiletries, opt for travel-sized products that will fit easily into your carry-on bag. This way, you can save space for other essential items like clothes and a money belt.

Remember to pack items such as toothpaste, toothbrush, shampoo, conditioner, soap, deodorant, and sunscreen in travel size containers.

Additionally, if you plan on hitting the beach or pool during your trip, don’t forget to bring a bathing suit along with a plastic bag for wet clothes.

Lastly, consider packing some dresses that can be rolled up to save space in your bags while still allowing you to look stylish on your travels.

Organizing Travel Documents and Money

Make sure you’ve got all your important travel documents and money neatly organized in a secure wallet or folder, ready to be easily accessed whenever needed. When preparing your carry-on and packing list, organizing your travel documents and money should be at the top of your priority list.

This way, you won’t have to scramble through your backpack or suitcase searching for them when you arrive at your destination. Keep all essential items such as passports, visas, identification cards, credit cards, and cash together in one designated place. A small zippered pouch or an RFID-blocking wallet can provide added security for your valuables.

By having everything in order before you embark on your journey, you’ll save time and stress while ensuring a smooth travel experience.

Technology and Entertainment Essentials

Ensure you have your technology and entertainment essentials ready by packing your favorite gadgets, headphones, and a collection of movies or books to keep yourself entertained during the long flights or train rides.

When it comes to packing these items, it’s important to consider the size and weight restrictions of your carry-on bag. Opt for smaller devices that won’t take up too much space but still provide you with hours of entertainment. Don’t forget to bring extra memory cards for your camera or phone, so you can capture all the amazing moments during your trip.

If you’re traveling in a plane, headphones are a must-have to enjoy music or watch movies without disturbing others. Depending on the weather at your destination, pack warm accessories like a cozy blanket or neck pillow for added comfort during the journey.

Technology and entertainment essentials will ensure that you have an enjoyable trip from start to finish.

Health and Safety Items

Remember to prioritize your health and safety by packing essential items such as hand sanitizer, face masks, and any necessary medications for your trip.

These health and safety items are crucial to have in your travel packing list, especially during these times.

When it comes to organizing these items, it’s best to keep them easily accessible in your carry-on bag. This way, you can quickly grab them whenever needed.

Don’t forget to pack enough supplies for the number of days you’ll be on vacation. It’s always better to be prepared than to run out of these essential items while away from home.

So make sure they are at the top of your packing list and enjoy a worry-free trip knowing that you’ve taken care of your health and safety needs.

Packing Tips for Maximizing Space

Now that you’ve packed all your health and safety items, it’s time to move on to the next step in creating the ultimate 10-day travel packing list: maximizing space.

With the goal of fitting everything into one carry-on bag, it’s important to make every inch count. The key is to pack smartly and efficiently, bringing only a few essential items that can be mixed and matched throughout your trip.

Instead of packing multiple pairs of shoes, opt for two versatile pairs that can be dressed up or down. Consider using packing cubes or compression bags to condense your clothing and create more space in your bag. And don’t forget the power of rolling your clothes instead of folding them – this simple technique can save you valuable space.

By following these packing tips, you’ll be amazed at how much more room you have for those extra three dresses or two bags for souvenirs!

Clothing Accessories and Versatile Outfits

Get ready to elevate your travel outfits by adding some stylish clothing accessories that can easily transform a basic outfit into something chic and trendy. When it comes to packing for your 10-day trip, it’s important to choose a few items that can be mixed and matched to create versatile outfits.

One key accessory is a statement belt – it can instantly cinch in your waist and add a touch of sophistication.

Another essential is a lightweight scarf – not only does it keep you warm on chilly evenings, but it can also be draped over your shoulders or tied around your neck for an effortlessly stylish look.

Don’t forget about hats! A wide-brimmed hat not only protects you from the sun but also adds flair to any ensemble.

With these accessories in tow, you’ll be able to carry fewer clothes while still looking fabulous on your next trip. Remember, organizing things beforehand will make life easier during travel days, so plan out each outfit and pack accordingly!

Footwear for Comfort and Versatility

When it comes to your footwear, make sure you pack a pair of comfortable and versatile shoes that can take you from exploring the city streets to enjoying a casual dinner. Opt for a pair of sneakers or walking shoes that provide ample support and cushioning for long days of sightseeing. Look for styles that are lightweight and breathable, especially if you’re traveling to a warm destination.

Additionally, consider packing a pair of sandals or flip flops for beach days or lounging by the pool. These’ll also come in handy when you need something quick and easy to slip on for short outings.

Remember, versatility is key when it comes to footwear, so choose styles that can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.

Snacks and Food for the Journey

Make sure you pack some snacks and food for the journey, so you can avoid hunger pangs and save money by not having to buy expensive airport or train station food. Having some tasty treats on hand will keep your energy levels up and make your travel experience more enjoyable.

Opt for portable snacks like granola bars, trail mix, or individual packs of nuts that are easy to carry and won’t take up too much space in your bag. Don’t forget to include some fruits like apples or bananas that don’t require refrigeration and can provide a refreshing burst of flavor.

If you’re a fan of savory snacks, consider packing some small bags of crackers or pretzels. And don’t forget to stay hydrated by bringing a reusable water bottle that you can refill throughout your journey.

Miscellaneous Items and Final Tips

Before we wrap up our discussion on packing for your ultimate 10-day travel adventure, let’s talk about some miscellaneous items and final tips that will enhance your trip.

It’s always a good idea to carry a small first aid kit with essentials like band-aids, pain relievers, and any necessary prescription medications. Don’t forget to pack a portable phone charger so you can stay connected even when you’re on the go. And if you plan on taking lots of photos, a lightweight tripod will help capture those perfect shots.

Now that we’ve covered all the essential items, here are some final tips: roll your clothes instead of folding them to save space in your suitcase; pack an extra bag for dirty laundry; and remember to leave some room for souvenirs! Lastly, don’t stress too much about packing – as long as you have the basics covered, you’ll be ready for an amazing journey ahead.

Safe travels!

Before you even take your suitcase out of the closet

Check the weather at your destination.

This seems intuitive, but you’d be surprised how many people are stuck traveling in rainy season without a raincoat.

Note how many days/nights you will be away.

This will help you decide the number of necessary outfits. Obviously, how often you prefer to wear the same clothes plays a part in this as well.

Note any special activities/events you may partake in.

Traveling for a birthday? You don’t want to forget that heartfelt gift you bought weeks in advance. Going to a wedding? It’d be a shame if you showed up without your suit. Hiking in Hawaii? Your water-shoes won’t get much use if you leave them behind.

Packing List

Make a packing list early and review it at least twice. (Yes, twice.)

You can easily find printable vacation packing lists online (like ours above), or you can write out your own. There are also a number of apps you can utilize if you prefer something more tech-based. Read about several of these below!

Timing is key here. If you jot things down or review your printed list in advance, it gives you the opportunity to take a second look with a fresh mind. All too often you’ll remember something you didn’t yesterday when your brain was thinking about pizza instead of packing.

If you’re printing a list that’s not trip specific, review it first and immediately cross off items you won’t need. Why bring a winter coat to the beach?

Take items you can grab at your destination off the list.

If you’re planning to travel with only a carry-on, this tip is especially important as it will save space (at least for your outgoing journey!).

Most times when traveling, your hotel will provide shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothpaste, etc.; why waste space packing them? If you’re a little picky about your toiletries or you’re not staying at a hotel, you’ll probably still encounter a drugstore where you can buy anything you might need.

Purchase travel-sized containers or toiletries if you plan on bringing your own.

Remember regulations for the amount of liquids you can bring in a carry-on for a flight. You’ll want travel-sized containers if you plan on carrying liquids this way.

Even if you’re flying with a checked bag and are allowed more liquids, do you really need that 16oz bottle of shampoo for a weeklong trip? Cutting it will save you room for other essential items.

Choose the right luggage.

Luggage Choice

Yes, different airlines have different restrictions on sizes for carry-ons and checked bags but stick to some general guidelines and you should be safe.

For carry-ons, you’re generally accepted at/under max linear dimensions of 155cm/45in. For checked bags, you’re generally safe under 158cm/62in max linear dimensions. However, be sure to check the airline you’re flying with prior to packing, as some can be stingy!

You also want to seriously consider the type of bag you enjoy traveling with – shoulder bag , backpack , roller bag, hard shell , soft shell, etc. There are definitely loads of options so just remember, your bag shouldn’t stress you out, it should make traveling easier.

Hot Tip:  We’ve done tons of research on this topic so don’t miss our articles on the best carry-on bags and the best checked luggage bags for any type of traveler.

When you’ve done your prep and you’re almost ready to pack

Essentials first.

Gather your most important items first. This includes all travel documents such as your passport, ID/driver’s license, boarding passes, hotel reservations, etc. This also includes anything you’ll seriously regret forgetting and can’t purchase while traveling: wallet , credit cards , camera , cell phone, etc.

This being said, there are a number of apps that can assist with itinerary management and decrease the number of printed documents you’ll need to carry. See our list of helpful packing apps at the end of this post.

Choose an appropriately sized suitcase.

If you only have 1 suitcase, then you’re set. If you’ve got more options, attempt to use the smaller one – most people tend to overpack when their suitcase is too large for their trip. You don’t really need an extra sweater, 2 more t-shirts, and another pair of boots just because they fit! Plus, your baggage will be a lot easier to handle if it’s smaller and lighter, which will cut your stress level significantly.

Lay everything out.

Lay out Clothes

Laying all of your items out allows you to plan outfits and account for your days/nights away. When everything’s laid out, you can clearly see how much you’re bringing and spot missing items easier. This also includes shoes, accessories, toiletries, etc.

Dividing items into sections based on where they’ll be packed is also helpful.

Lastly, don’t forget to lay out your plane/travel day outfit and consider it with your other pieces.

Pick simple mix-and-match pieces to prevent overpacking.

In general, choose simple tops and bottoms that can be mixed and matched to make multiple outfits. Did you know that just 3 bottoms (pants, shorts, skirt, etc.), 4 tops (tee, tank, etc.), and 2 outer layers (sweater, coat, or cardigan) can make up to 24 different outfits??

Depending on the reason for your trip, you might need to pack a special item that can only be worn once (suit, bridesmaid dress, etc.), but try to keep these to a minimum! This step is key if you’re pressed for space.

PUT STUFF BACK!

Once you’ve laid out all your items, really consider the number of days you’ll be on your trip. Chances are you could stand to put a few things back in the closet in order to pack more efficiently. Remember, no one wants to pay a fee for overweight baggage or lug around extra clothes for no reason!

Pack it up.

You never thought we’d actually get to this step, did you? There are a number of recommended packing tips when it comes to getting everything neatly in the suitcase. This can be overwhelming, but if you pick up the right habits packing will seem much less stressful.

Check, double-check, and triple-check your essentials.

Put a checkmark next to each item you’ve packed and DON’T TAKE IT OUT OF YOUR BAG. If you’re not ready to pack an item, do NOT check the box! That’s exactly how you leave your phone at home on the charger next to your bed. “But the box was checked!!!” you’ll say…

(Note: this rule actually goes for everything, not just essentials.)

If you’re notorious for leaving essentials at home, print an extra travel checklist just for those items and tape it to your front door the night before you leave. Make a promise that you can’t walk out without reviewing the list one final time.

Fold, Interfold, Bundle, or Roll?

Fold or roll

By now you’ve probably heard that old-fashioned folding isn’t the best method to use when it comes to packing, especially in tight cases. If you have the room to spare, virtually any of these methods will do.

Interfolding involves layering clothes on top of each other in a top-to-bottom, bottom-to-top format, then interweaving them as you fold them together. If you fold the items in accordance with the size of your suitcase, you’re left with a neat little bundle that will fit right in. Additionally, this style of folding will leave your clothing virtually wrinkle-free.

Bundle packing is very similar to interfolding, but you are tightly folding or wrapping your clothing items around a soft core (like a dopp kit , stack of underwear, cloth zippered jewelry bag , etc.). Bundle packing is also said to reduce wrinkles and save space.

Many people also recommend rolling when packing your clothes – at least for softer items and jeans. Again, this method tends to save room and reduce creasing in the process.

If none of the above methods are doing the trick and you don’t have the option of a hanging garment bag , it may be beneficial to learn the proper way to fold nicer items (like a dress shirt or suit coat ) for the best results.

Pack liquids in secure bags.

Toiletries that can leak will leak. These should be placed in a plastic zippered bag or another secure bag of your choosing. Some travelers even encourage cutting small squares of plastic wrap to cover the opening between bottles and their lids in attempts to prevent further seepage.

Utilize shoe space when you can.

Rolled-up socks, belts, gloves, stocking caps, and other small items can easily fit into shoes (as long as they’re relatively clean and not smelly!). This also helps the shoe hold its shape throughout your travels. Rolled-up belts can also be used to keep a shirt collar stiff if needed.

Prevent dirty shoes from soiling clothes.

Pack them in a separate space or utilize plastic bags/shower caps to cover the bottoms and prevent dirtying the rest of your clothing. Have a delicate pair of dress shoes or heels? Pack them in their own bags if possible, or clean the bottoms and wrap with a durable garment.

Toss a dryer sheet into your suitcase to keep things smelling fresh.

While you’re at it, grab a stain pen or stain wipes for your carry-on. If you happen to spill on one of the only tops you’ve brought and don’t have laundry facilities, you’re cutting your number of outfits drastically. If you know you’ll have laundry facilities or need to wash your clothes by hand, you can purchase individual detergent packets.

Pack a change of clothes in your carry-on.

Change of clothes

By packing a change of clothes and undergarments in your carry-on , you’re covered for at least a day if your baggage gets delayed or lost. Some travelers may want to pack an extra pair of shoes just in case.

Similarly, if you’re heading to a beach locale, pack a swimsuit and sandals . If you have to wait to check into your hotel, you can head to the pool while the concierge keeps your luggage.

Keep expensive/irreplaceable items on your person.

As a general rule of thumb, you should leave irreplaceable items at home. This includes objects such as expensive jewelry and heirlooms. If you must travel with them, these items should be kept with you at all times. Do not trust them to be safe when placed in checked baggage; if your suitcase is lost, delayed, or stolen, you’re out of luck.

Similarly, if you must travel with official documents such as birth certificates or social security cards, check to see if a certified copy will suffice. Or maybe take a photo on your phone for less hassle. Otherwise, the same rule applies to these irreplaceable documents.

Follow the TSA 3-1-1 rule for liquids in carry-on baggage.

3 – Travelers may carry liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes in containers of 3.4oz (100ml) or smaller.

1 – These items must fit into 1 clear plastic quart-sized bag.

1 – Only 1 bag per passenger is allowed.

Remove this bag from your carry-on and place it separately in the screening bin. This is meant to slightly expedite passing through security .

Packpoint

The following apps can be ultra helpful for those who prefer a mobile device to the standard pen and paper methods.

Evernote: While Evernote isn’t technically travel-oriented, it’s all about lists and can be a big help for packing. With Evernote, you can sync your packing list across all your devices, making it easy to keep track of things no matter where you are…even out at the store buying items from your list!

Evernote also enables sharing notes with others, which is especially helpful for group trips. Need reminders? No problem, you can set alerts in Evernote to keep you on top of your game.

Packing Pro: This app is everything you ever wanted if you’re a list maker, and everything you didn’t know you needed if you’re a forgetful person. Packing Pro helps travelers get organized via packing lists. From templates and suggestions to customizable designs, Packing Pro has options for every type of traveler. Users are allowed an unlimited number of packing lists of an unlimited length, and you can even add images, alerts, and mark “need to buy” items.

It also has iCloud support and the ability to share your lists via email, AirDrop, Dropbox, etc. You can also export and edit your lists with Excel, Numbers, or Google Docs. If you’re the type that physically needs to cross things off, you can send directly to a printer too.

The Expert List-Making Assistant is a cool feature if you’re low-maintenance: it will take your parameters (number of people, destination, weather, etc.) and automatically create lists for you.

PackPoint: PackPoint’s purpose is to take the guesswork out of packing. The app pretty much tells you what to pack based on how long you’re traveling, where you’re going, the weather when you get there, and any activities you have planned (chosen from a pre-defined list in the app). With PackPoint Premium, users can connect to TripIt, share their lists across devices, and add customizable packing items/activities.

Travel List: Travel List seems to have fewer bells and whistles. You can do many of the same things as with Packing Pro and PackPoint: create customizable packing lists, sync across your devices, share with other people, and create alerts/reminders. One nice component is their calendar view, which gives a different type of visualization that some people really prefer. And this one is compatible with Apple Watch, which can be a huge organizational perk.

Lists To Do: This app keeps things simple for general to-do lists and is super easy to use. See your list’s percentage progress for a clear visual on how much you have left to do/pack before jetting off and set yourself reminders and share lists with your travel companions.

Tripit

The following apps are helpful for keeping all your travel information in one place. From flight itineraries to hotel confirmation, event tickets to dinner reservations, they’ve got you covered. Plus, this means fewer printed travel documents you need to worry about carrying with you.

Google Trips: In a nutshell, Google Trips seamlessly integrates reservations (flights, hotels, rental cars, etc.) from your Gmail and creates a specific “trip” in the app. These trips are like folders of information including some basic categories like Reservations, Things to Do, Saved Places, Day Plans, Food & Drink, Getting Around, and Need to Know.

It also provides opportunities for travel inspiration, traveler reviews, dining/drink options, and encyclopedic information on several hundred top cities and attractions around the globe.

Also good to note: when you download your trip, everything is available offline in case you’re stuck without WiFi or data.

Kayak Trips: Part of Kayak’s main app includes a platform called Trips, which acts as an itinerary management app to keep all your pertinent travel information together. With Trips, you can forward your booking confirmations to [email protected] , where your itinerary is managed for you in a nice timeline format with maps and important info all on one screen.

Kayak Trips gives you the ability to send other people access to your travel plans through sharing options, link to your calendar app for planning consistency, and receive SMS and email flight alerts.

TripIt: TripIt is one of the most popular travel organization apps on the market. The app automatically imports flight, hotel, rental car, and other booking confirmations ( concert tickets from StubHub, dinner reservations from OpenTable, etc.) from your e-mail. If you don’t appreciate the e-mail scan, you can always forward your emails to [email protected] or manually input all the information into the system.

TripIt then creates an itinerary in an easy-to-read format, including space for directions between airports, rental car pickup, and hotel details. TripIt also allows for calendar syncing and makes it easy to send your travel info to family/friends by sharing via text, Evernote, LinkedIn, Slack, or WhatsApp.

With TripIt Pro, users get real-time flight alerts, help to find alternative flights, an airline seat tracker for better seats, reward program points tracking, and interactive airport maps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it better to fold or roll clothes in a suitcase.

Whether it’s better to fold or roll clothes for your suitcase may depend on a number of things. If you’ve no concern about saving space, folding could be just fine. However, if you’re trying to fit a lot of clothes into a small bag, there’s no shortage of youtube videos out there which prove rolling clothes can help with this task.

Additionally, interfolding and bundling are other techniques that could be helpful space savers. However, to save the most space, vacuum bags will be your best bet – just keep in mind your weight limit when packing a lot of things into one case!

Do packing cubes really save space?

Packing cubes don’t necessarily save space but they definitely help you stay organized when packing.

They can also help by keeping items separated — who wants smelly gym clothes next to their fancy dinner outfits?

How do I maximize space in my luggage?

To maximize space when packing, try using these methods for your contents: roll, bundle, or interfold (explanations above). Each has its own special technique but all can help you save space and fit more into your luggage of choice.

Another quick space-saving tip? Utilize typically unused space. For example, pack socks or belts inside your shoes.

How to I pack clothes without wrinkling them?

Here are a few quick tips to decrease wrinkling when packing your clothes into a suitcase: iron first, use a roll or interfold method, pack wrinkle-prone items in garment bags or utilize tissue paper between folds and layers, and/or choose fabrics that are less likely to wrinkle in the first place (wool, Tencel, knit, cashmere, polyester, nylon, spandex).

How should I pack toiletries in my suitcase?

When packing toiletries, you’ll want to be sure they’re kept separate from your clothes in a special bag or case. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy — a Ziplock baggie will do — but this will prevent the leaking of liquid onto your clothing items.

Additionally, you can place a small piece of cling-wrap between the bottles and lids of your liquids to prevent leakage.

If you’re bringing them in your carry-on, you’ll want to be sure you’re adhering to the 3-1-1 rule (use 3 oz containers max, in 1 quart-sized bag, with one bag per traveler) in order to pass easily through security.

Should I pack valuable items in my suitcase?

Always keep valuable items on your person while traveling. This includes identification cards, passports, visas, money, credit cards, jewelry, important medications, etc.

How to Pack for a 10 Day Vacation

Any size vacation is a good one, but we think 10 days makes for the perfect trip. It’s long enough that you can get a feel for a place and really sink into a relaxed mindset, yet short enough that it doesn’t disrupt your normal life too much. But packing for a 10-dayer can be somewhat of a challenge if you don’t think it through. Luckily, we’re here to help you out with the perfect week-and-a-half packing list that ticks all your boxes — comfy, versatile and stylish to boot. We carefully selected the items on the list to make sure you can fit them all in your lightweight, expandable carry-on backpack for fewer worries and more freedom to relax and enjoy your vacation.

10 Day

Packing for Versatility

OK, maybe this one’s obvious, but a 10 day trip is not the time to go squeezing all your clothes into your teeny-tiny carry-on. This length of trip calls for the big (or at least medium) guns. But even your standard large suitcase isn’t big enough for 10 sets of pajamas, 10 different dinner outfits and 10 looks for sightseeing. That’s why it’s key to pack for versatility, choosing pieces that can do it all and not get wrinkly in the process.

  • Start with a Versatile Travel Outfit — Let’s start with the basics: what you’re going to wear while you’re getting there. Your travel outfit is the perfect starting point because it can serve as an outfit (or two), but you don’t want to pack it in your luggage because then you’ll have to dig it out after you’ve neatly packed all your stuff. Choose a pair of stylish yet comfortable pants and shoes that you can also wear sightseeing and a top that can double as a base layer or undershirt when styling layered looks.
  • Choose the Right Fabrics — The fabrics you choose are clutch because they can be the differentiator between an item you can wear once and an item you wear three times. For example, you want to pack casual T-shirts for men that are made with technical fabrics (we love cotton-poly), which help wick away moisture and control odors, so you get multiple wears out of them. Denim, cotton, lightweight wool and linen are all tried-and-true traveling fabrics that will stay fresh and neat looking.
  • Pack Multipurpose Garments — Except for your undies, every item that gets folded and packed should work with multiple different outfits so you can pack less but still look put-together. Keep it basic and versatile with solid-colored tops and pants that are easy to style with everything else in your suitcase. With that being said, don’t forget to pack your specialty stuff that makes your wardrobe your wardrobe, such as your tall tees and your favorite statement watch.
  • Keep It Minimal — With a 10-day trip, your biggest enemy is overpacking. There’s probably a lot on the agenda, but this length of trip doesn’t really justify more than one large suitcase. Space is crucial! But remember that you will probably take a lot of photos of yourself while you’re seeing all the sights, so make each look unique!
  • Go for a “Color Family” — Consider sticking to one main color family to avoid having to pack multiple pairs of shoes, belts and accessories. For example, if you opt for a black-gray scheme, you’ll only have to pack one pair of black dress shoes, casual shoes or sandals rather than brown or navy options to go with your brown looks.

What to Pack

Of course, what you pack depends entirely on what you’ll be doing once you arrive at your destination. Your packing list will look a lot different if you’ve got work meetings, happy hour and dinner than it will if your itinerary consists of full days at the theme park or beach. In general, we’ve found that the following formulas work well for most 10 day trips.

  • 10 Daytime Looks — Daytime looks include clothes for sightseeing, brunch, museums, the beach , business meetings or whatever else you plan to do after you wake up and get going. By 10 looks, we don’t mean 10 separate outfits. We mean a few key pieces that can be styled together easily, such as a couple of pairs of jeans, board shorts or joggers and five to seven versatile shirts you can mix and match with your bottoms. There are now lots of board shorts for men that transition between the beach and boardwalk flawlessly. Obviously, you’ll need to choose shirts that don’t get too stinky, because you’ll have to wear a couple of them more than once. Here’s a sample packing list for your daytime looks:
  • Two pairs of jeans or shorts
  • One pair of nice leggings or joggers
  • Five to eight pairs of T-shirts, tank tops or long-sleeved shirts
  • One versatile jacket (a denim jacket goes with everything)
  • One pair of sneakers
  • One pair of sandals or boots, depending on the weather
  • Two to five swimsuits, depending on your plans
  • Two swim cover-ups
  • 10+ pairs of socks and underwear
  • Five to Seven Evening Looks — Your evening looks include everything you’d wear for dinner, shows, concerts or parties. Chances are, you’ll spend a couple of your nights relaxing in your hotel room or traveling, so nicer outfits may not be necessary for every single night. How formal or casual you go will depend a lot on where you plan on spending your evenings but, ideally, you won’t have to get too dressed up more than once or twice. Here’s a great 10-day packing list that accounts for a few nights of evening fun:
  • One pair of suit pants
  • One pair of nice jeans
  • One formal button-up
  • Two nice shirts, such as casual button-ups
  • Two casual evening-appropriate T-shirts, sweaters, etc.
  • A pair of dress shoes
  • A nicer jacket
  • Dress socks
  • A tie if necessary
  • Versatile accessories
  • One pair of nice pants or a skirt
  • Two or three casual evening-appropriate tops
  • Two dresses, jumpsuits or rompers
  • One pair of dressy heels or sandals
  • A dressier jacket
  • 3 Pairs of Pajamas — Getting a good night’s rest is key to enjoying your time when you travel, so don’t forget to pack your favorite jammies. We recommend packing a shorts set and a pants set, because you never know how hot or cold it might be in your hotel room. Again, pay attention to fabrics, here! Anything moisture-wicking and breathable is good because it’ll stay fresh even if you sweat a lot at night.

10 Day

Source: Monkey Business Images/Shutterstock.com Study after study has shown that getting away from the daily grind is good for mental and physical health . Some research even shows that getting out of Dodge reduces your risk of depression, stress and negative emotions. So don’t let the packing process drag you into a negative state! A little bit of thought and planning will go a long way to ensuring that you have the time of your life and soak up all those great benefits.

  • Portable gaming devices

Consider a handheld gaming console or a gaming-ready laptop if you prefer something more portable.

  • Carrying case

Packing Tips

Here are some packing tips to help you make the most of your suitcase or backpack and ensure a smooth and organized trip:

  • Make a Packing List

Start by making a detailed packing list, as we discussed earlier. This will help you stay organized and ensure you don’t forget any essential items.

  • Choose the Right Luggage

Select a suitcase, backpack, or travel bag that suits your needs and your trip. Ensure it meets airline size and weight restrictions if you’re flying.

  • Roll Your Clothes

Rolling your clothes instead of folding them can save space and help prevent wrinkles. You can also use packing cubes to keep similar items together and make packing and unpacking easier.

Be selective with your clothing choices and try to mix and match outfits. Stick to versatile pieces that can be dressed up or down.

  • Use Travel-Size Toiletries

Purchase travel-sized toiletries or transfer your favorite products into small, refillable bottles to save space and comply with airline liquid restrictions.

  • Pack Essentials in Your Carry-On

Always keep important documents, medications, a change of clothes, and valuable items like electronics in your carry-on bag if your checked luggage is lost or delayed.

  • Use Ziplock Bags

Ziplock bags are great for organizing and separating items. Use them for toiletries, snacks, and even for keeping wet or dirty clothes separate from clean ones.

  • Pack Heavier Items at the Bottom

Place heavier items, such as shoes and toiletries, at the bottom of your suitcase to help distribute weight and prevent items from getting crushed.

  • Limit Shoes

Shoes can take up a lot of space. Limit the number of pairs you bring and wear your bulkiest pair while traveling.

  • Wear Bulky Items

If you’re bringing a heavy coat or boots, wear them during your travel day to save space in your luggage.

  • Use Packing Cubes or Compression Bags

Packing cubes can help you categorize your belongings and stay organized. Compression bags can help you save even more space by removing excess air.

  • Don’t Overpack

It’s tempting to pack for every possible scenario, but it’s usually best to pack light. You can do laundry if needed during your trip.

  • Check the Weather

Check the weather forecast for your destination and pack accordingly. This will help you avoid overpacking.

  • Leave Room for Souvenirs

If you plan to shop on your trip, leave extra space in your luggage for souvenirs and gifts.

  • Secure Liquids

Place liquids in sealed plastic bags to prevent leaks. Pack them in an easily accessible part of your bag for security checks.

  • Label Your Luggage

Attach luggage tags with your name, phone number, and email address to your bags. This makes it easier to identify your luggage if it gets lost.

  • Photocopy Important Documents

Make photocopies of your passport, ID, travel insurance, and other essential documents. Keep them separate from the originals in case of loss or theft.

  • Pack a Travel Lock

Use a TSA-approved travel lock to secure your luggage, especially if you’re staying in shared accommodations.

  • Stay Organized

Use the pockets and compartments in your luggage effectively to keep everything organized and easily accessible.

  • Pack with Security in Mind

Be mindful of security regulations at your destination, especially if you’re traveling internationally. Avoid packing prohibited items in your carry-on or checked luggage.

Electronics

Packing and traveling with electronics requires special care to stay safe, functional, and well-organized. Here are some tips for packing and handling electronics during your trip:

  • Use a Dedicated Electronics Organizer
  • Protect Your Devices
  • Bring Necessary Chargers and Adapters
  • Label Your Cords
  • Backup Power
  • Protect Screens
  • Keep Them Dry
  • Back-Up Your Data
  • Secure Your Electronics
  • Pack Smartly
  •  Security Screening
  • Download Offline Content
  • Travel Surge Protector
  • Keep an Eye on Batteries
  • Test Everything Before You Leave

Are you worried about Packing a List For a 10-day Trip? In conclusion, packing and traveling with electronics requires careful consideration to ensure your devices remain functional, organized, and protected during your trip. Creating a well-thought-out packing list for a 10-day trip is essential for ensuring a smooth and enjoyable journey. You can pack efficiently and avoid over-packing by carefully considering your destination, activities, and personal needs. Organizing items into categories, prioritizing essentials, and packing cubes or bags can help maximize space and keep your belongings organized.

Can I take my drone on a flight?

Traveling with drones can be complex due to safety and security concerns.

You can typically bring a drone on a flight, but it must be in your carry-on luggage. Regulations may vary depending on the airline and destination, so check with both before your trip.

Ensure the drone’s batteries are within the allowed watt-hour rating, and remove the propellers for added safety.

How can I protect my electronics from extreme temperatures during travel?

Extreme hot and cold temperatures can affect the performance and lifespan of electronics. To protect your devices, avoid leaving them in a parked car on hot days or exposed to freezing temperatures.

Use insulated bags or cases or wrap devices in clothing to mitigate temperature fluctuations.

What precautions should I take when using public charging stations?

Public charging stations can be convenient but also pose cybersecurity risks. To stay safe, use a USB data blocker (a “USB condom”) to prevent data transfer when charging. Alternatively, plug your charger into a standard electrical outlet or use a portable power bank.

  • Umbrella or raincoat

  • Laundry bag
  • Snacks and water bottle
  • Travel lock

Remember, this checklist is a starting point. Depending on your destination and personal preferences, you may need to add or subtract items. For example, if you're traveling to a beach destination, don't forget to pack sunscreen and a beach towel.

Packing your clothes and other items efficiently can make a world of difference when it comes to maximizing space and minimizing wrinkles. Here are some tips to help you pack like a pro:

  • Roll instead of folding : Rolling your clothes can save space and prevent wrinkles. Plus, it gives you the opportunity to create a Tetris-like puzzle with your items.
  • Choose versatile clothing : Opt for clothing items that can be mixed and matched to create different outfits. This allows you to pack fewer items without compromising on style.
  • Use packing cubes : Packing cubes are a game-changer when it comes to organized packing. They help keep your clothes neat and separate from other items in your suitcase.
  • Pack travel-sized toiletries : To save space and comply with airline regulations, invest in travel-sized toiletries. Alternatively, you can also purchase reusable travel bottles and transfer your favorite products into them.

Packing toiletries and medications requires a bit more thought and care to ensure everything stays intact and accessible. Here are a few pointers to help you pack these essentials:

  • Use spill-proof containers : To avoid any messy mishaps, invest in leak-proof containers for your toiletries. This will prevent any potential spills from ruining your clothes or other belongings.
  • Keep medications in their original packaging : It's important to keep your medications properly labeled and in their original packaging for security and ease of identification during your travels.
  • Check the liquid restrictions : Airlines often have restrictions on the size of liquid containers you can bring in your carry-on luggage. Make sure to check the guidelines and transfer any liquids into travel-sized containers if necessary.

Apart from clothing and toiletries, there are a few other items you should consider packing for a smooth and stress-free trip. Here are some additional packing tips:

  • Bring a universal adapter : Different countries have different plug configurations, so having a universal adapter will ensure you can charge your electronics wherever you go.
  • Don't forget your charger cables : It's easy to remember the devices but forget the charger cables. Double-check that you have all the necessary cables for your electronics.
  • Pack a reusable water bottle : Staying hydrated is crucial during your travels. Packing a reusable water bottle not only helps you save money but also reduces plastic waste.
  • Bring a photocopy of important documents : In case you misplace your passport or other essential documents, having photocopies can make the process of getting replacements much smoother.

Your carry-on bag is your lifeline during a long flight or layover. It's essential to pack a few key items to keep you comfortable and entertained. Here are some must-haves for your carry-on bag:

  • Travel essentials : Passport, wallet, boarding pass, and any important travel documents.
  • Entertainment : Books, e-reader, tablet, or any other form of entertainment to keep you occupied during the flight.
  • Snacks : Pack some healthy snacks to keep your energy levels up during the journey.
  • Toiletries : A small bag with travel-sized toiletries like toothbrush, toothpaste, and moisturizer can help you freshen up during long flights.
  • Change of clothes : In case your checked luggage gets lost or delayed, having a spare set of clothes in your carry-on can save you from a potential wardrobe disaster.

Staying healthy while traveling is essential, especially when exploring new destinations. Here are some items to pack to prioritize your well-being:

  • Hand sanitizer : Keeping your hands clean is crucial when traveling, especially when you're in crowded areas or touching public surfaces.
  • Reusable water bottle : Staying hydrated is key, so having a reusable water bottle will encourage you to drink more water throughout the day.
  • Healthy snacks : Pack some nutritious snacks like nuts, granola bars, or dried fruits to avoid relying on unhealthy airport or road trip food.
  • First aid kit : Include essential items like band-aids, pain relievers, antiseptic wipes, and any medication you may need.
  • Sunscreen : Protect your skin from harmful UV rays by packing sunscreen with a high SPF.
  • Insect repellent : Depending on your destination, insect repellent can be a lifesaver to protect yourself from pesky bugs.

The 5-4-3-2-1 packing rules are a great guideline to help you pack efficiently and lightly. Here's how it works:

  • 5 tops : Pack five tops that can be mixed and matched with your bottoms.
  • 4 bottoms : Choose four bottoms that complement your tops.
  • 3 dresses or skirts : If you prefer dresses or skirts, pack three that you can wear on different occasions.
  • 2 pairs of shoes : Bring two pairs of shoes – one for everyday wear and one for dressier occasions.
  • 1 outerwear : Include one outerwear piece like a jacket or sweater to layer and stay warm if needed.

Your carry-on checklist is essential for a comfortable journey. Here are some items to include:

  • Travel essentials : Passport, wallet, boarding pass, and travel documents.
  • Entertainment : Books, e-reader, tablet, or any other form of entertainment.
  • Snacks : Pack some healthy snacks to keep you energized.
  • Toiletries : A small bag with essentials like a toothbrush, toothpaste, and moisturizer.
  • Change of clothes : In case your checked luggage gets lost or delayed, having a spare set of clothes is handy.

For a 6-day trip, a general rule of thumb is to pack enough tops and bottoms for each day. As a starting point, you can follow the 5-4-3-2-1 packing rules mentioned earlier and adjust according to your personal preferences and the activities you have planned.

How do I pack for a 10-day trip?

Packing for a 10-day trip requires a bit more planning. Here's a general packing guideline to help you:

  • Tops : Pack eight tops that can be mixed and matched.
  • Bottoms : Choose six bottoms that coordinate with your tops.
  • Dresses or skirts : Include three dresses or skirts that you can wear on different occasions.
  • Shoes : Bring three pairs of shoes – one for everyday wear, one for dressier occasions, and one for physical activities.
  • Outerwear : Include one versatile outerwear piece like a jacket or sweater.
  • Accessories : Pack accessories like scarves, hats, and jewelry to elevate your outfits.
  • Invest in a portable luggage scale : Avoid overweight baggage fees by weighing your suitcase before heading to the airport.
  • Use vacuum compression bags : Maximize suitcase space by using vacuum compression bags to shrink bulky items like jackets or sweaters.
  • Pack a power strip : When outlets are limited, having a power strip allows you to charge multiple devices at once.
  • Use versatile packing cubes : Packing cubes not only keep your clothes organized but can also double as makeshift drawers in hotel rooms.
  • Don't forget a laundry bag : Keep dirty clothes separate from clean ones by packing a laundry bag.

Now that you're armed with our ultimate packing checklist and expert tips, you're ready to embark on your next adventure with confidence and ease.

10 Days Trip Packing List for Women: The Complete Guide

  • 10 Days Trip Packing List…

What should a woman pack for a 10-day trip

Leaving your house for ten days with nothing but the few items that can fit in your carry-on is an exciting and daunting idea. Everybody knows that a woman’s packing list can be never-ending and fitting in all of your ‘necessities’ can be a tough task. Fortunately, by planning and committing to only taking the essentials, you can avoid both over and under-packing.

Table of Contents

Things to Consider Before Packing

The weather forecast .

It is important to know what the weather will be like if you are going to be away from home because you won’t be able to run to your closet and grab what you need. If the forecast predicts snow, you need to be prepared with a carry-on filled with sweaters, mittens, and fuzzy socks. If you’re visiting a rainy area, you should pack an umbrella and rubber boots. On the other hand, if it’s going to be sunny every day, you don’t want to be stuck with jackets and sweatpants.

The reason for your trip

Considering this factor is a very important part of the planning process. You need to pack according to the reason for your trip because there’s a big difference in attire for business meetings and casual beachwear. For example, if you will be traveling for a funeral, you need to remember to include the formal black outfit that you will be wearing on the day.

Where your trip will be

Assuming that the weather will be close to perfect, you still need to consider your final destination for other reasons. If you are traveling to another state or country, you need to pack according to the culture, religion, and beliefs of the people that live there. For example, wearing clothes that only cover the bare minimum won’t cut it if you will be staying in a Muslim community.

The size of your carry-on

Let’s face it; you can’t fit 10 days worth of items into a bag designed for a week’s getaway. You need to consider the style, size, and dimensions of your carry-on before you start preparing and planning your list. For example, a small duffle bag won’t be able to take tons of clothes and more than 3 pairs of shoes.

If you aren’t too worried about the space in your carry-on, take a look at our list of travel essentials for women for some extra items that you may need.

Needless to say, clothes are the most important item on any packing list (unless you’ll be visiting a nudist community). Plan your outfits carefully to ensure that you don’t leave anything behind, and consider all factors, like the weather and destination, when choosing the items that you’ll be taking.

  • Pants (shorts, denim, trousers), 5 to 6 pairs
  • Shirts (t-shirts, blouses, tops), 5 to 6 pairs
  • Light jacket, sweater, or coat
  • Sleepwear (nightgown, pajamas), 3 to 4 pairs
  • Dresses (formal, casual), 2 to 3 dresses. Packing dresses requires some extra care, here’s how to do it right .
  • Swimwear (bikini, swimsuit, coverups)
  • Formal wear (dress suit, uniform) at least 1 pair
  • Gym or exercise attire. If you like to wear your gym attire on a flight, read our suggestions about wearing leggings in a flight .

You don’t want to be barefoot during your entire 10-day trip or be stuck with wearing the single pair you traveled with, right? Packing enough shoes that go with all of your outfits is crucial. It’s also important to remember all the elements and factors when packing, like the weather conditions and the activities that you’ll be taking on.

  • Running shoes or sneakers
  • Sandals or flip flops
  • Formal or dress shoes
  • Weather-resistant rubber boots

Undergarments

While clothes and shoes are the first things most women put on their list, it’ll be a catastrophe to forget to add undergarments for each day. Remember to carefully count the number of days and evenings that you will need a fresh pair of underwear and socks. If your chosen accommodation doesn’t offer laundry services, you’ll need to pack a pair for each day.

  • Underwear (panties, lingerie, underpants), 10 pairs
  • Bras or undershirts, 8 to 10 pairs
  • Socks, 10 pairs
  • Tights, stockings, or hosiery (if you’ll be wearing skirts or dresses)
  • Sports bra (if you’ll be exercising on your trip)
  • Menstrual panties (just in case…)

Toiletries

Most hotels offer a complimentary bottle of shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. But if we’re honest, those certainly won’t last for 10 days. So, it’s up to you to pack all of the necessities that you’ll need to keep yourself clean and well-groomed.

  • Hairbrush or comb
  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Hair styling products
  • Deodorant (roll-on, spray, perfume)
  • Facial products (creams, toners, etc.)
  • Body and face wash
  • Shaving accessories (razor, shaving cream)
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • Nail accessories (nail clipper, nail polish & remover)
  • Loofah or washcloth
  • A pair of flip-flops to wear in the shower
  • Contact solution if you wear contact lenses

Accessories

Filling your carry-on with accessories that you won’t be wearing is unnecessary. However, some things just can’t be forgotten at home. You can make your own list based on what you typically use in your daily life but here are a few items that you may need:

  • Makeup and makeup remover
  • Jewelry (earrings, necklaces, bracelets)
  • Hats and hair accessories

Check out our dedicated guide on the best travel accessories for women for more ideas.

  • A travel purse to hold your cash or cards and travel documents.

Electronics

There are some electronic devices that you may need at some point in your trip, even if you plan on going off the grid for a while. Consider this list carefully, because taking too many electronics to an unfamiliar area could be very risky.

  • Cell phone charger
  • Voltage adapter
  • Laptop (if you’ll be working)
  • Electronic reader (for the flight or insomnia)
  • Earphones, earpods, or headphones

You can use a binder or file to keep all of your documents in place so they’ll be easy to access when you need them. Try to keep this binder with you at all times because losing it would be a disastrous event and a mountain of admin.

  • Identification (ID card, driver’s license)
  • Transportation documents (rental car, public transportation tickets)
  • Boarding passes
  • Accommodation documents (booking confirmation)
  • Activity documents (event tickets, bookings, receipts)
  • Personal documents (health insurance, medical information, emergency contacts)

Medications

If you use chronic medications, you should bring them along because trying to find them in another city or country could be very difficult. If you choose to get your meds on your trip, remember to pack your prescription slip.

  • Prescription drugs
  • First aid kit
  • Pain relievers
  • Laxatives and loperamide
  • Allergy medications and antihistamines
  • Common flu medications (cough syrup, decongestants)

How can I prepare for a 10-day trip?

The first thing you should do is arrange a method of transport to get to your destination. This means that you need to book a flight, buy a train ticket, or hire a cab. Then, you need to arrange accommodation for the 10 days.

The next thing to do is make a list of what you will need to take on your trip. Once you are done with your list, you need to handle all of the steps before leaving your house for a while, like notifying your security company and arranging for someone to come and feed your pets. Plus, remember to arrange funds in the form of cash or cards for your time away.

Is it better to take cash or cards on my trip?

There is no right or wrong when it comes to cash vs. card. Some establishments are cash-only venues, while others are cash-free. Thus, you need to call the hotel before you leave to find out what they would prefer and they’ll likely have some knowledge of the rest of the businesses in the area.

However, remember that it could be unsafe to travel with cash, so it is better to take no more than what you’ll need. It’s a good idea to split your budget between your card and your purse so you are prepared either way.

How can I ensure that I take enough items?

If there’s enough space in your carry-on, it’s better to slightly overpack than completely under-pack. While traveling with a heavy bag full of t-shirts that you are probably not even going to unfold is a hassle, finding a way to wash and dry a worn t-shirt for the next day is even worse.

Take enough toiletries to last you 10 days, but allocate a part of your budget towards restocking if you happen to run out. The same goes for other items like medication, feminine hygiene products, and makeup.

how-to-pack-for-a-10-day-trip-with-a-carry-on

Introduction

Traveling is an exciting experience that allows us to explore new destinations, immerse ourselves in different cultures, and create lifelong memories. However, packing for a trip can sometimes be a daunting task, especially when you’re limited to a carry-on bag. Many travelers prefer to travel with just a carry-on to avoid the hassle of checking in luggage and waiting at the carousel. So, how do you pack for a 10-day trip with just a carry-on?

In this article, we will guide you through the process of efficiently and effectively packing for a 10-day trip using only a carry-on bag. By following these tips, you’ll be able to pack smart, save space, and avoid unnecessary weight.

Whether you’re heading to a bustling city, a scenic beach destination, or a charming countryside, we’ve got you covered. From choosing the right carry-on bag to selecting versatile clothing and packing essential items, we’ll provide you with all the travel tips you need to ensure a stress-free and organized packing experience. So, let’s dive in and discover how to pack like a pro for your next 10-day adventure!

Step 1: Choosing the Right Carry-On Bag

When it comes to packing efficiently for a 10-day trip, the first step is selecting the right carry-on bag. Your carry-on bag should meet the size restrictions of the airlines you are flying with and be durable enough to withstand the rigors of travel.

Opt for a carry-on bag that is lightweight yet spacious enough to accommodate all your essentials. Look for bags with multiple compartments and pockets to help you stay organized. Consider investing in a bag with a built-in compression system that allows you to maximize space and keep your belongings compact.

Another important consideration is the bag’s dimensions. Different airlines have varying size limitations for carry-on bags, so be sure to check the specific regulations of your chosen airline before making a purchase. It’s also a good idea to choose a bag that fits comfortably in the overhead compartment of most planes.

If you prefer hands-free mobility, opt for a carry-on bag with wheels and a retractable handle. This will make navigating through airports or crowded streets a breeze. Alternatively, if you prefer a backpack-style bag, make sure it has comfortable padded straps and a supportive back panel.

Remember that the right carry-on bag can make a significant difference in your overall travel experience. It can save you from the hassle of waiting at baggage claim, prevent extra fees for checked luggage, and provide the convenience of having all your essentials within reach during the journey.

Once you’ve chosen the perfect carry-on bag, you’re ready to move on to the next step: making a packing list.

Step 2: Making a Packing List

Before you start tossing items into your carry-on bag, it’s essential to create a detailed packing list. Having a packing list ensures that you don’t forget any essential items and helps you stay organized throughout the process.

Begin by considering the weather and activities you’ll be engaging in during your 10-day trip. Take into account the destination’s climate, any special events or occasions, and the type of activities you’ll be participating in. This will help you determine the specific clothing and gear you’ll need to pack.

Start by listing the basic clothing items such as shirts, pants, skirts, or dresses. Consider versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched to create different outfits. Aim for items made from lightweight, wrinkle-resistant fabrics that are easy to pack and will dry quickly if washed.

Next, move on to undergarments, socks, and sleepwear. It’s advisable to bring enough underwear and socks to last the duration of your trip, but you can save space by planning to do laundry midway through. Also, consider packing a sleep mask and earplugs to ensure a comfortable rest during your journey.

Don’t forget to include footwear appropriate for your activities and the climate. A pair of walking shoes or sneakers for exploring, a pair of sandals for warmer days, and a pair of dressier shoes for evenings out should cover all the bases. Remember to wear the bulkiest shoes on the airplane to save space.

Now, consider any accessories you’ll need, such as belts, hats, scarves, or jewelry. Accessories can effortlessly transform an outfit and add variety to your wardrobe without taking up too much space.

When it comes to toiletries, keep in mind the TSA’s liquid restrictions. Opt for travel-sized toiletries or invest in reusable travel containers to hold your favorite products. Don’t forget essentials like toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, and any necessary medications.

Finally, include any electronics, chargers, adapters, and entertainment items you’ll be taking along. Keep in mind both the weight and the dimensions of these items to ensure they fit in your carry-on bag without exceeding any restrictions.

By creating a comprehensive packing list, you can systematically plan and organize your belongings, ensuring you have everything you need without overpacking. With your list in hand, you’re ready to proceed to the next step: organizing your clothes.

Step 3: Organizing Your Clothes

Efficiently organizing your clothes is key to maximizing space and keeping your carry-on bag neat and tidy. Follow these tips to ensure your clothes remain wrinkle-free and easy to access throughout your 10-day trip.

First, consider rolling your clothes instead of folding them. Rolling your clothes not only saves space but also helps prevent creases and wrinkles. Start with the heaviest and bulkier items, such as jeans and sweaters, and roll them tightly. Then, roll lighter garments like t-shirts, dresses, and lightweight trousers. Stacking the rolls in your carry-on bag will save space and allow for easy retrieval later on.

Another method for organizing your clothes is by using packing cubes or compression bags. These small compartments can be used to categorize and organize different clothing items, making it easier to locate specific items without rummaging through your entire bag. Compression bags, in particular, can be used to squeeze out excess air, reducing the overall volume of your clothes.

If you’re concerned about keeping your clothes wrinkle-free, consider using packing folder systems. These folders help keep your clothes flat and organized while minimizing wrinkles. Simply fold your clothes neatly and place them inside the folder, which can then be safely tucked away in your carry-on bag.

Additionally, consider utilizing the space inside your shoes by stuffing them with small items like socks, underwear, or accessories. This not only maximizes space but also helps maintain the shape of your shoes while protecting them from damage.

To ensure easy access to your outfits, place the clothes you plan to wear in the coming days on top of the pile or in an easily reachable compartment. This will save you from having to dig through your entire bag to find what you need.

Lastly, if you anticipate encountering different weather conditions during your trip, layering is the key. Pack versatile pieces that can be layered to accommodate changing temperatures. For instance, pack lightweight sweaters or cardigans that can be worn over t-shirts or dresses to provide warmth when needed.

By organizing your clothes effectively, you’ll not only optimize space in your carry-on bag but also make unpacking and dressing during your trip a breeze. Now that your clothes are organized, it’s time to move on to the next step: maximizing space with the roll-up technique.

Step 4: Maximizing Space with Roll-Up Technique

One of the most effective methods to maximize space in your carry-on bag is by using the roll-up technique. This technique involves rolling your clothing items tightly to reduce their bulk and fit more items into your bag.

Start by laying your clothing item flat on a surface. Smooth out any wrinkles or creases to ensure a neat roll. Then, starting from one end, tightly roll the item all the way to the other end. For items like t-shirts or dresses, fold them in half lengthwise before rolling to create a more compact roll.

As you roll, try to maintain even pressure to avoid creating lumps or bulges in the fabric. This will help ensure a more efficient use of space in your bag. For bulkier items like sweaters or jeans, you can fold them in half once or twice before rolling to further save space.

Once your garments are rolled, place them vertically in your carry-on bag. This method not only saves space but also allows for easy identification and access to specific items without having to unpack your entire bag.

In addition to saving space, the roll-up technique also offers the benefit of minimizing wrinkles. By tightly rolling your clothes, you reduce the amount of surface area that is prone to creases, keeping your garments looking fresh and wrinkle-free.

Another tip to maximize space is to pack smaller items like socks, underwear, or accessories into gaps between rolled clothing items. This not only fills the empty spaces but also keeps everything well-organized and prevents items from shifting during travel.

Remember to pack your heaviest and bulkiest items at the bottom of your bag, closer to the wheels or back panel. This helps distribute the weight evenly and prevents your bag from toppling over. Lighter items can be placed on top of the heavier ones.

By utilizing the roll-up technique, you’ll be amazed at how much more you can fit into your carry-on bag. Not only will you have more space for essentials, but you’ll also be able to travel with ease and convenience without the need for additional luggage. With the roll-up technique mastered, you’re now ready to move on to selecting versatile outfits for your trip in the next step.

Step 5: Selecting Versatile Outfits

When packing for a 10-day trip with a carry-on bag, selecting versatile outfits is key to minimizing the number of clothes you need to bring while still ensuring you have suitable attire for different occasions and activities.

Start by choosing a neutral color palette for your clothing items. Neutrals like black, white, grey, or navy can easily be mixed and matched, creating numerous outfit combinations. This allows you to create different looks with fewer clothing items.

Opt for clothing pieces that can be dressed up or down. For example, a simple black dress can be worn casually during the day with sandals and a denim jacket, and then dressed up for a dinner out with heels and accessories. This versatility will help you save space by reducing the need for separate day and evening outfits.

When selecting tops, go for versatile options like basic t-shirts, button-down shirts, or blouses that can be paired with various bottoms. Layering pieces like cardigans or lightweight jackets can also add variety to your outfits while providing warmth if needed.

For bottoms, choose items that can be worn with multiple tops. A pair of dark jeans, for instance, can be dressed up with a blouse and heels or worn casually with a t-shirt and sneakers. Additionally, consider packing a pair of comfortable and versatile leggings that can be worn for both lounging and exercising.

Don’t forget to pack at least one outfit suitable for active or outdoor activities, such as hiking or sightseeing. Choose lightweight and moisture-wicking materials for comfortable movement and easy packing.

Accessorize your outfits to change up your look without taking up too much space. Scarves, belts, hats, or statement jewelry can add a touch of personality and style to your outfits, allowing you to create different looks with minimal effort.

Remember to choose your footwear wisely. Aim for shoes that are comfortable, versatile, and can work with multiple outfits. A pair of sneakers or walking shoes can be worn for exploring, while a pair of sandals or flats can be used for everyday outings. Select shoes that are lightweight and easy to pack.

By carefully selecting versatile clothing pieces and mixing and matching them, you’ll be able to create numerous outfit combinations without overpacking. This allows you to have a range of options for different activities and occasions throughout your 10-day trip.

With your versatile outfits selected, it’s time to move on to the next step: packing toiletries and personal items.

Step 6: Packing Toiletries and Personal Items

When it comes to packing toiletries and personal items for a 10-day trip with a carry-on bag, it’s important to be mindful of space restrictions and airport regulations. Follow these tips to efficiently pack your essentials while complying with travel regulations.

Start by considering the TSA’s liquid restrictions. Place all liquids, gels, and creams in containers that don’t exceed 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) and pack them in a clear, quart-sized bag. This includes items such as shampoo, conditioner, lotion, toothpaste, and face wash. If you prefer using your own products, consider purchasing travel-sized containers or reusable silicone bottles for easy transport.

Minimize the number of toiletries you bring by packing items that have multiple uses. For example, choose a moisturizer with SPF to serve as both a sunscreen and a daily moisturizer. Consider using solid toiletries, such as a bar of soap or a shampoo bar, which take up less space and are not subject to liquid restrictions.

Remember to pack essential toiletries like a toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss. Consider investing in a travel-sized toothbrush with a protective case to maintain hygiene during your trip. Don’t forget any prescribed medications, and it’s always a good idea to bring a small first-aid kit with band-aids, pain relievers, and any other necessary medical supplies.

When it comes to personal items, pack only what you truly need. Consider the climate and activities of your trip to determine what personal items are essential. This may include items like sunglasses, a hat, earplugs, a sleep mask, or a travel-sized umbrella.

To save space, roll or fold clothing items like socks, underwear, and undershirts, and place them in small packing cubes or ziplock bags. This will help keep them organized and prevent them from getting scattered in your bag.

If you wear makeup, opt for travel-sized or sample-sized products to minimize space and avoid spills. Consider using multi-purpose products like a tinted moisturizer or a lip and cheek stain to simplify your makeup routine.

Lastly, keep in mind any travel documents or important paperwork you may need. This includes your passport, identification, travel insurance information, and any necessary visas. Keep these items easily accessible but secure, either in a designated pocket of your carry-on bag or in a travel document organizer.

By packing toiletries and personal items efficiently, you’ll be able to ensure you have everything you need for a comfortable and hygienic trip without sacrificing space in your carry-on bag. With your essentials packed, let’s move on to the next step: packing electronics and entertainment.

Step 7: Packing Electronics and Entertainment

When embarking on a 10-day trip with a carry-on bag, it’s essential to pack the right electronics and entertainment items to keep you connected, entertained, and organized. Follow these tips to make sure you have all your electronic essentials without adding unnecessary bulk to your bag.

Start by considering the electronics that are essential for your trip. This may include a smartphone, tablet, or laptop for staying connected, capturing memories, and working on the go. Remember to pack their corresponding chargers and cables.

If you plan on using your electronics frequently during the trip, consider investing in a portable power bank to ensure you always have a backup power source. Choose a power bank with a high capacity and multiple charging ports for charging multiple devices simultaneously.

If you’re an avid reader, consider packing an e-reader rather than physical books. E-readers are lightweight and can store numerous books in a single device, saving space in your bag.

For entertainment during long flights or downtime, consider packing noise-canceling headphones to block out background noise and provide a more immersive audio experience. Bluetooth headphones are a great option as they eliminate the need for tangled wires.

If you’re a photography enthusiast, be sure to pack your camera and any lenses you plan to use. However, be mindful of the space they occupy and consider if a smartphone camera will suffice for your needs.

Another essential electronic item to consider is a universal travel adapter. This will ensure that you can charge your devices no matter which country you’re visiting. Look for an adapter that supports multiple plug types and has built-in surge protection.

When it comes to entertainment, think about what will keep you occupied during transit or downtime. This can include items like books, magazines, or a deck of cards. Alternatively, you can load your electronic devices with movies, TV shows, or podcasts to enjoy during the journey.

Lastly, consider downloading useful travel apps before your trip. These can include navigation apps, translation apps, currency converters, and other helpful tools that will make your travel experience smoother.

By packing the right electronics and entertainment items, you’ll ensure you have the necessary tools for staying connected, capturing memories, and entertaining yourself during your 10-day trip. With your electronics and entertainment items sorted, let’s move on to the next step: packing essential items for a 10-day trip.

Step 8: Essentials for a 10-Day Trip

When packing for a 10-day trip with a carry-on bag, it’s important to have certain essential items that will enhance your comfort, safety, and overall travel experience. These essentials will ensure you’re well-prepared for any situation that may arise during your trip.

The first essential item is a travel-sized toiletry kit, which includes items such as a toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, soap or body wash, and any necessary medication. Pack these items in a clear, quart-sized bag to comply with airport regulations.

Next, consider packing a travel towel. These lightweight and quick-drying towels are perfect for beach days, outdoor activities, or even as a backup in case of any hotel towel shortages.

A travel-sized umbrella is another essential item, as it can protect you from unexpected rain showers or provide shade from the sun. Opt for a compact and lightweight umbrella that can easily fit into your carry-on bag.

It’s also crucial to bring a basic first-aid kit. Include adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and any necessary prescription medications. This will ensure you’re prepared for any minor injuries or illnesses that may occur during your trip.

A portable travel lock is essential for securing your belongings while you’re out and about. Use a combination lock or a small padlock to secure your luggage or lockers in hostels or hotels.

Consider bringing a portable travel-size laundry detergent if you plan on doing laundry during your trip. This will enable you to wash your clothes easily, especially if you’re traveling light and packing fewer outfits.

A travel adapter is an absolute must-have if you’re traveling to countries with different electrical outlets. Ensure the adapter is compatible with the countries you’ll be visiting to charge your electronic devices effortlessly.

Don’t forget to pack important travel documents, such as your passport, ID cards, travel insurance information, and any necessary visas. Keep these items in a secure and easily accessible location within your carry-on bag.

Finally, having a refillable water bottle is essential to stay hydrated throughout your journey. Opt for a durable, leak-proof bottle that you can refill as needed, helping you save money and reduce plastic waste.

By packing these essential items, you’ll ensure you’re equipped with the necessary tools and supplies to navigate your 10-day trip comfortably and securely. With your essentials sorted, let’s move on to the final step: tips for efficient packing.

Step 9: Tips for Efficient Packing

Efficient packing is essential when it comes to traveling with a carry-on bag for a 10-day trip. These tips will help you maximize space, minimize weight, and ensure a hassle-free packing experience:

1. Plan your outfits: Before packing, plan out your outfits for each day. Choose versatile clothing items that can be mixed and matched to create different looks. This will help you avoid overpacking and ensure you have suitable attire for each day.

2. Use packing cubes: Invest in packing cubes to keep your belongings organized and avoid a jumbled mess in your bag. Categorize items by type or outfit, making it easier to locate specific items without unpacking your entire bag.

3. Roll clothing items: Utilize the roll-up technique mentioned earlier in this article. Rolling your clothes not only saves space but also helps prevent wrinkles. It also allows you to easily see and access each item, eliminating the need to rummage through your entire bag.

4. Wear bulky items: Minimize the space taken up in your bag by wearing your bulkiest clothing items and shoes during travel. This frees up room in your carry-on and helps distribute weight more evenly.

5. Utilize empty spaces: Make use of any empty spaces in your bag. Fill in gaps between rolled clothing items with smaller items like accessories, socks, or underwear. This fills empty space efficiently and prevents items from shifting during travel.

6. Consider multi-purpose items: Pack items that serve multiple purposes. For example, a sarong can be used as a beach cover-up, a scarf, or even a picnic blanket. This reduces the number of items you need to bring while still providing versatility.

7. Minimize toiletries: Only pack the essential toiletries you’ll need for your trip. Opt for travel-sized containers or transfer products into reusable travel-sized bottles to save space and comply with airport restrictions.

8. Choose lightweight fabrics: When selecting clothing, opt for lightweight and quick-drying fabrics. These not only save space but also make it easier to wash and dry items during your trip if necessary.

9. Check the weather forecast: Before packing, check the weather forecast for your destination. This will help you pack appropriate clothing and eliminate items that are unnecessary for the expected weather conditions.

10. Pack with purpose: Finally, pack with a purpose. Be mindful of each item you include and ask yourself if it’s truly necessary. Strive to pack only what you will genuinely use and avoid the temptation to pack “just in case” items.

By following these efficient packing tips, you’ll be able to make the most of the limited space in your carry-on bag and streamline the packing process. And with that, you’re now ready to embark on your 10-day trip fully prepared and stress-free!

Packing for a 10-day trip with just a carry-on bag may initially seem like a daunting task, but with the right approach and some smart strategies, it can be easily accomplished. What to Pack for a Week Long Trip – Checklist Included

what to pack for a week long trip checklist

Packing for a week long trip? Whether you’re headed out on a road trip or on a plane, you’ll want to make sure you’ve packed efficiently and haven’t forgotten anything important behind. This checklist of things to bring with you will help you make sure you don’t forget anything before you leave.

Note: This post contains affiliate links. This means if you purchase through my links I may receive a commission at no extra cost to you. You can read more on the  disclosure and privacy  page.

For clothes I am a huge advocate of having a capsule wardrobe. By that I mean that you want things that are in the same color family or pair well together, that have the ability to be layered and mixed and matched, and that can be versatile for all the different activities you might be participating in while you’re on vacations.

Think through your trip and the activities you have planned. Will you need to dress up? Are you going hiking? Do you plan to get in workouts on the road?

Then check the weather. Will it snow? Rain? Be incredibly sunny? You can check the weather about 10 days out, but you’ll want to check again a few days before your trip to get a better idea of what the weather will be like when you’re there.

Typically a universal packing list looks like this for me:

2 tank tops 3-4 tops 1 dress 2 pairs of pants (one black slack or khaki, one pair of jeans) 1 sweater 1 light jacket/rain jacket 2 bras 7 pairs of underwear 7 pairs of socks

This of course doesn’t count what I wear on the plane or in the car, which is another pair of jeans, t-shirt, hoodie and associated underwear and socks. I dress to be comfortable while I’m traveling, and use it as an opportunity to bring another pair of jeans with me. If you’re a jeans lover like me, this is a good way to save weight and space in your bag while still getting to bring two pairs of jeans.

Again this will depend on any activities that you’ll be participating in. If you plan to go hiking you’ll want to have hiking boots, and if you plan to be somewhere wintery and cold you may want a pair of fleece lined boots. Always wear your heaviest pair the day you fly in order to keep as much space in your bag as possible.

Typically I wear a pair of sneakers or hiking shoes while I’m traveling then I pack a couple of pairs of smaller shoes, usually a flat and a dress shoe or sandal. If I’m really worried about space in my bag, I opt for a dressier pair of flats and skip the dress shoes altogether.

A universal shoe list for a week:

1 pair sneakers or hiking shoes 1 pair of flats 1 dress shoe

I know toiletries can be one most controversial of the “what to pack” bunch.I know lots of people prefer to depend on whatever the hotel will provide, while others with allergies or sensitivities prefer to bring their own. What to pack will vary wildly depending on your personal preferences and needs, as well as (surprise, surprise) what you’ll be doing on your trip. It is a place where you can save weight and space in your bag, though. So for this one I’m just aiming for a very generalized list that you can add on to or subtract from as needed:

Just remember, if you’re flying in a carry-on only you’ll need to make sure your liquids fit the 3-1-1 rule and stay under 3oz. Swapping out shampoo and body soap for bars can help you get around limits if you’re worried, but usually for a week 3oz is plenty! I also opt to pick a soap with a good lather when I travel to avoid having to bring shaving cream with me.

Shampoo Conditioner Body soap Lotion Sunscreen Deodorant Razor Toothpaste Toothbrush Floss Tampons/Pads

Hair & Makeup

This one is another that can get controversial. I know a lot of travel gurus will tell you to skip the makeup and let your hair go natural for your trip to lighten the load of things you need to bring with you. That’s a completely viable option, and one I’ve done myself when I’ve taken a trip where I knew doing my hair and makeup would be useless (spending lots of time outdoors in a humid climate with curly hair – well it’s just not worth it!).

However, you may want to dress up for a night out or spruce up for some of the pictures you’ll be taking on the road. So I’m giving basic set of things to take here, which you can add or detract from as you will. Another reminder though, any liquids like foundations and lipgloss will need to go in your quart-sized bag if you’re flying.

For hair, again it’s up to you. Though many modern hotels have a hairdryer standard. Your straightener can also double as a curling iron if you watch a few youtube videos and get the hang of it.

Makeup Chapstick Foundation Powder Blush Eyeshadow palette Eyeliner Brow product Mascara Makeup Brush Makeup Wipes

Hair Brush Comb Hairdryer Curler Straightener Styling product Hairspray

Medicine & First Aid

This is another important one. If you take prescription medication, it’s recommended that you take the actual bottles and a copy of the prescription with you. I still bring my weekly pill box with me to remind me what I need to take and when as I don’t want to be fumbling every morning I”m on a different time zone trying to remember if I took my pill or not.

I’d also recommend a small supply of things like tums and imodium in case you have a run in with bad food. It’s approximately zero fun to have to try to find a local pharmacy open after hours when you realize the delicious but out-of-the-ordinary food you had for dinner is doing battle with your insides.

Your mini-medical kit can also include things like tweezers, a bandaid or two, neosporin (universally helpful for small burns, bites and cuts), benadryl or another antihistamine (I’ve found it good for air sickness and seasickness in addition to potential pop-up allergies when I’m abroad), ibuprofen or tylenol, and alcohol wipes. You want to keep just enough to get you through a few hours before the pharmacy opens or you can find one, but not so much that it takes up a huge portion of your bag.

Prescriptions Vitamins Weekly pill box Tums and/or Imodium Tweezers Bandaids Neosporin Antihistamine Cold medicine Ibuprofen or tylenol Alcohol wipes Contact solution Kleenex

Electronics

How connected do you want to be on your trip? That’s probably the first question you’ll want to ask before you start thinking about what electronics you want to bring.

If you don’t plan to work on the road for instance, you probably don’t need to bring a laptop. Usually I can get away with bringing a tablet and a small foldable keyboard. It’s enough that I can easily check email, read books on the plane, play a few games while I’m in the airport, and look things up from the hotel before I head out before the day. I find it incredibly useful for saving space in my bag – I can bring all the books, magazines and guidebooks I want in digital form without any of the bulk! If you want to be extremely minimal, you can probably do all of that with your smartphone. Just be sure to bring extra batteries and chargers!

For photography, I’m also including a DSLR camera. I don’t carry it everywhere I go on my trips. My phone in many cases is more than enough for some good snapshots, especially when I’m just out to dinner with friends or family and just want to be able to capture moments as they happen. But if I’m heading to a gorgeous castle or guaranteed some scenic vistas? You better believe I’m taking my DSLR. It’s well worth the space it takes up for the photos I can get out of it. And if you can’t tell, I take a lot of photos which means I typically bring several high capacity SD cards. (Yes, I am that person in the museum taking photos of everything, and I love it!)

Kindle or iPad Foldable keyboard Laptop Chargers Back-up Battery Pocket Charger DSLR Camera Lenses Extra camera batteries SD Cards Tripod Phone Earbuds/headphones

Passport Visa(s) Physical tickets or passes Copy of your passport Copy of your travel insurance Copy of your health insurance information Copy of your reservations

Cash Credit Cards ID

Extras (that you’ll probably want):

Travel Towel Neck Pillow Travel journal Pen Water bottle Deck of cards

Luggage and Packing

Last but certainly not least, you’re going to need to be able to pack up everything and luggage can make or break your trip. For a week long trip you should be able to get by with a large carry-on and a personal item if you’re flying.

Here are my favorite carry-ons for the plane:

10 days travel packing list

If you’re taking a roadtrip, you can get away with taking a standard size suitcase like the one that comes in the Cal Pak set and a smaller day-bag. Just always remember to bring a day bag as there may be day trips or hikes that you want to take at your destination that will require more than a purse and less than a massive suitcase.

Either way you’ll want to make sure your bag is organized, which you can do with a solid set of packing cubes. These are my favorite:

10 days travel packing list

I’m not sure who exactly came up with the idea for packing cubes, but if not the first Eagle Creek was one of the first to bring out packing cubes and they have some of the highest quality ones out there. These are made with washable rip-stop nylon that is durable and lightweight so it doesn’t bulk up your bag. Better than your average packing cube, these compression cubes have a double zippered system that compresses the contents down and saves you even more space in your bags. These are on the pricier side though, but I’d argue that there an investment well made.

For security, if your bag doesn’t have inbuilt TSA locks, you’ll want to get a set of those. It keeps prying hands out, and the TSA has a special key to unlock it if necessary. Even if you’re flying carry-on, it’s always possible that they need you to gate-check your luggage.

Another favorite of mine if I’m checking my bag is a bright luggage tag. Like everyone else standing at the carousel, I have black luggage and no one likes to play the game of “your bag or mine?” when you’ve just spent several hours cooped up on a plane and are in a hurry to get to your hotel and get your vacation started.

Carry-On Packing List: This Is How to Pack Light

Janice Waugh

June 11, 2024 by Janice Waugh

image of suitcase with text: how to pack light, your carry-on packing list

Packing light, getting everything needed into a carry-on bag, takes a bit of skill and a trim packing list. But, when you've done it successfully once, it becomes easy.

I believe that it is important to pack light, especially as a solo traveler. It puts you in control. You will:

  • be more mobile. Walking a few blocks or carrying your bag up a few stairs is not a problem with a carry-on.
  • face fewer lineups at airports . Arrival and departure are easier and faster with a carry-on.
  • save money . A carry-on makes taking buses and trains rather than taxis possible.
  • evade the attention of thieves . Someone who has a large suitcase or multiple bags likely has more stuff to steal than you.
  • avoid losing luggage in transit . With you in control of your bag at all times, the hassle of lost luggage doesn't exist.
  • save on extra fees . This is especially true on budget flights that often save the hold for commercial revenue.

For the last 15 years, I've only owned carry-on sized luggage. I have a roller bag and a backpack. That's it. They both work for trips of a week or a month. It doesn't matter. All my travel essentials are there.

As an example, a couple of years ago, I went to Los Angeles for four days (it was hot), then to London for four days (it was cool and damp), on to Wales for a lot of walking, then north to Liverpool and Edinburgh. I traveled for 19 days in total and for the first eight I was at conferences. Needless to say, the weather and activities between LA and Edinburgh were very different, but I had everything I needed in one carry-on and a day pack.

Below is my packing list. It is tried and true, developed from 15 years of writing about solo travel. I turn to it every time I'm going on a trip. Whether it's a weekend getaway or a month-long tour, this post is my resource every time.

Use this packing list and you'll be hooked on an easier way to travel.

The 3 Rules of Packing Light

Below are the three packing rules to live by if you want to travel light. This approach allows you to have all the travel essentials and a bit of fashion too.

  • Everything must be pack-worthy. Pack-worthy means multi-purpose. Everything must go with many things. Nothing can have a one-time, one-purpose use.
  • Your feet are of prime importance . Shoes make the outfit but they can also break a trip. Take shoes that have proven to be comfortable.
  • One color palette only. To have clothes for a range of activities that work together, choose one color palette. Working with a base color like black, navy, or brown, along with a contrasting color such as gray or beige, plus an accent color makes sure that everything you're carrying works together.

One-bag packing tips:

  • Follow carry-on rules according to your airline. Be really careful about the weight. Just because you can fit it into a carry-on suitcase does not mean they will let you on the plane with it.
  • Watch the restrictions on the size of bottle liquids and other items you are allowed to carry on board.
  • Pack the bulky items rather than wear them so that you know you'll have space in your bag when traveling around. However, if the bulky item is also heavy, wear it to beat the weight limit.
  • Be considerate of other passengers and don't hog the overhead space.
  • People rave about either rolling or folding. I don't think it actually makes that much difference. Do what works for you.

Clothing List for Women Wanting to Pack Light

Here is your carry-on packing list .

  • Take a pair of light flip-flops if you're staying in a hostel. Best to wear them around and in the shower.
  • For hiking, I'm now more inclined to take hiking shoes rather than boots. These are my Merrell Hiking Shoes . If space is a problem, wear them on the plane and tie them onto your carry-on or backpack at your destination.
  • Pants . 3 pairs total or two pairs and one dress or skirt (wear your most comfortable on the plane).
  • Tops . 4 tops, including 1 light sweater, and 1 camisole that works as an under layer for hiking and under a jacket for a dressier look.
  • Cardigan or light jacket . Something that you can dress up or down depending on jeans/pants and accessories.
  • Accessories . Belt, inexpensive jewelry, one scarf to dress up casual clothes.
  • Jacket . I have my second Marmot Women’s Precip Jacket . It took me over 12 years to wear out my first one.
  • Basics . Umbrella, scarf, gloves, rain pants , hat, vest, pair of sunglasses (depending on the weather of your destinations, you may not need all of these).
  • Bathing suit . (Depending on your trip.)
  • Fundamentals . Pajamas, 5 pairs of underwear that are breathable and quick-drying, 2 bras, 3 pairs of socks (fresh socks every day if hiking).

It sounds like a lot, but it’s not. Rinse clothes out when necessary. When you return, take note of what you didn’t use and don’t pack it next time.

Travel Essentials Packing List

  • Hotel confirmations
  • Flight information
  • Passport and visas as necessary
  • Travel insurance . I'm proof that travel insurance is essential. Read A Complete Guide to Travel Insurance for Solo Travelers .
  • Cash . It's always good to have some cash with you. The US dollar is the most commonly accepted currency worldwide.
  • No foreign transaction fee credit card. If you're outside your home country this will save you 2-4% on everything you put on your card compared to the typical credit card. When I travel outside Canada I prefer to use a card with no foreign transaction fees. The only no fee, no foreign transaction fee, Canadian credit card I know of is the Home Trust Visa card . In the US, Chase is known for their no foreign transaction fee cards, but check with your own financial institution.
  • Backup card with no annual fee.  I have a basic free Visa card that is a backup to my backup. And yes, I have had to use it.
  • Roadside assistance. If you have AAA or CAA, you'll be fine in North America. If you don’t, it may be worth considering or, if you're renting a car, you could purchase from the rental agency. However, watch the price. It could be more than an annual price from AAA and CAA.
  • VPN . I have a VPN on my phone, tablet, and computer so I can safely use public Wi-Fi. I would never travel without it. For more details, read Best VPN for Travel: What, Why, How & New Recommendations .
  • Universal travel adapter with USB ports
  • E-reader, Kindle, iPad (whatever you use)
  • Journal and pen
  • Phone and charger
  • Camera and charger (To be honest, I've cut this from my personal list. Phone camera images are so good now that I hardly ever pull out my DSLR.)
  • Computer and ac adapter, if you're so inclined
  • Prescription medication, vitamins, supplements, water bottle (whether you check luggage or not, these need to be on your carry-on packing list.)
  • Small first aid kit
  • Your bathroom essentials: conditioner, hair product, face cream, makeup, deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, brush, razor, shave soap
  • Hand sanitizer
  • A few feet of duct tape
  • A couple of resealable plastic bags

Carry-On Packing List for Men

A men's packing list is not a lot different from a women's except that it's easier. There is not as much nuance in a man's wardrobe. Throw a blazer onto a guy wearing jeans and a t-shirt, and he looks great. So, here's the men's packing list – all the travel essentials to cover just about any trip.

  • Shoes . 2 pairs total. One pair street shoes (or sandals) and one pair of dressier shoes. If you need hiking boots, wear them on the plane and only bring shoes that have proven to be comfortable.
  • Pants/shorts . 3 pairs total. You know your style but one pair of pants should be long and not denim.
  • T-shirts . 4 (make sure at least one of them is white to wear under a dress shirt). If you're going someplace tropical or humid, make sure that they are very light and pack more of them.
  • Collared shirt . 1 golf shirt or other casual shirt with a collar.
  • Dress shirt . 1 for dressier occasions.
  • Blazer . This is optional, of course, but really useful. Choose a light fabric.
  • Belt and tie . (If you're into that look.)
  • Basics . Umbrella, scarf, gloves, rain pants, hat, vest, pair of sunglasses (again, depending on the weather of your destinations, you may not need all of these).
  • Bathing suit . (If needed.)
  • Fundamentals . Pajamas, 5 pairs of underwear, 4 pairs of socks.

Rinse clothes out when necessary. When you return, take note of what you didn’t use and don’t pack it next time.

unpackaged air tag and tile mate luggag trackers

Luggage Trackers – Review by King

A luggage tracker has become a travel essential. AirTags  are the most widely known tracker that people use for their luggage, but they only work with iPhones. Android users have many alternatives, and in this article, I will review the  Tile Mate  which is compatible with both Android and iPhone.

No doubt you have heard about the chaos at the airports and the horror stories of lost luggage. Many travelers have turned to technology to help take some of the anxiety out of checking luggage. While I recommend only using carry-on, those who cannot avoid checking bags can use a tile luggage tracker and other electronic tracking devices.

King's review is detailed, explains how luggage trackers work, and includes his and Tracey's personal experiences using them while traveling solo. Read the full luggage trackers review here.

travelon messenger-style bag, front and top views

Messenger-style Bag from Travelon – Review by Tracey

I don't like to buy many products that are only for travel. I prefer to invest in things that I can use all the time that are also useful when I'm on the road. When looking for a new bag I settled on a messenger-style bag from Travelon , for a number of reasons, including the fact that I can (and now do) use it as much at home as away. It is an essential part of my carry-on packing list strategy.

Travelon bags have a 5-Point Anti-Theft Security System which includes:

  • Lockdown Straps which help prevent grab-and-go thieves from dashing off with your bag. You can secure your bag to a stationary object or chair when seated.
  • Locking Compartments help prevent pickpockets from getting into your bag. Locking zippered pulls secure your bag contents. (These are really cool.)
  • Slash-resistant Body helps prevent slash-and-grab theft in busy areas with a slash-resistant mesh barrier in all 4 sides and bag bottom panel.
  • Slash-resistant Straps help prevent slash-and-run theft with a stainless steel wire inside the strap.
  • RFID Blocking Pockets help prevent against electronic identity theft with RFID blocking card slots and passport pockets.

I don't know how valuable the RFID technology actually is, but the pocket and slots for cards was a bit of a game-changer for me. Transferring my cards and passport to slots inside this bag, which I wore across my body meant that my hands were always free and there was no chance of me leaving my wallet behind.

The water-resistant material kept everything inside dry as I wandered around Ireland in off-and-on rain and drizzle. The messenger bag is very compact, which was really good for me and meant that I never became loaded down with extra stuff that I “might” need.

I found the quality of the materials and the utility of the organizational components to be excellent. I would not hesitate to recommend Travelon products. They offer many different styles of bags for everyone, in addition to things like packing cubes , backpacks , and a tech organizer ( I just ordered this one in lime green so it will be easy to find in the sea of black that is my suitcase).

man on bus with Bose earbuds in his ears

Noise Canceling Earbuds for Travel – Review by King

If you don't have them already, you have probably considered noise canceling headphones or earbuds at some point. You may be wondering if they are worth the extra money. This is understandable as they can be double the price of regular ones, but I’m here to tell you they are worth every penny. For me, they are now a travel essential. These devices do an amazing job of completely eliminating engine noise and can reduce the sound of crying babies to barely a whisper.

After much thought and research, I chose a pair of the Bose QuietComfort 20 Acoustic Noise Canceling Earbuds. There's a newer model now–without the pesky cords to deal with–called Bose QuietComfort Earbuds II . These wireless, bluetooth earbuds intelligently personalize the noise cancellation and sound performance to your ears and are going on my Christmas list.

Sony also gets high praise in the marketplace for their noise cancelation headphones, and Apple’s Airpod Pro (not the entry-level model) gets the job done well if you’d like something more stylish and are willing to pay a premium for that style.

One additional benefit, if you turn on the noise cancelation feature without any music, you’ll create your own cone of silence that will muffle the voices of annoying co-workers or that person seated next to you on the plane who can’t quite understand that you don’t want to hear about how much they made on cryptocurrencies.

10 days travel packing list

Once upon a time, I was terrified of minimalist travel.

Let’s just say I’m not great with decisions, and opening my suitcase would often bring an impending sense of doom… No space for my blender, you say?! What if I need an emergency smoothie??

My first backpacking trip around Europe , I carried everything on my back, with options for every possible occasion. Buuuut the thing about bringing around a million outfits is your suitcase becomes a sad brick of poor decisions. If you’re on the go, you want a light bag, no ifs ands or buts.

Luckily, after a decade of frequent travel, I’ve mastered the art of packing carry-on only (and still looking somewhat presentable).

Of all my packing lists, the one I’m most proud of is my packing list for minimalist carry-on only travel.

EXAMPLE: During a ten day road trip around the Balkans with some friends, every time I wore a new outfit, I’d get a stare from my travel companions akin to “where the heck did you get that from?” Honestly, by the end of the trip, my little black tote earned its reputation as a Room of Requirement. … 10 days, multiple outfits, all different purposes, crammed into one weekender bag.

If this intrigues you, keep scrolling. Today, I’d like to share my simple minimalist packing list with you (plus one adapted for winter).

Alright, here we go – my guide to easy, breezy minimalist travel.

10 days travel packing list

Save this Minimalist Packing List for Later!

You’ll be very glad you did.

First: My Versatile Carry-On Packing List

Here’s a quick carry-on packing list for you for that can be adapted to any trip, style, or season! This should last you at least a week.

Below, I’ll be sharing a more detailed breakdown of how I would adapt this list for a summer or winter trip.

PS:  You can find a full resolution printable version of this packing list in my VIP Library  here.

10 days travel packing list

My Minimalist Packing List (for Minimalist Travel in the Summer)

So the following list is the one I alluded to in the intro (read: Room of Requirement).

It’s primarily geared towards summer city travel (as in, this will probably not cut it if you’re going on some wilderness adventures or Arctic trek) BUT if you want to look nice while travelling around with a small bag, this is the list for you.

PS: I’m a big fan of dresses, hence their hefty representation in the list. If your personal style is different, feel free to sub dresses for additional shorts/tops.

3 summer dresses

I know that three dresses sounds like a lot for a minimalist packing list, but in the summer these are pretty much all I wear so I stand by my choice. They fit every possible occasion, so here are the three dresses I’d bring:

  • 1 cute summer dress: Pick a dress that’s nice enough to pass for a night out (grabbing drinks, having a nice dinner) but is also suitable to wear during the day.
  • 1 more fitted, classy-looking dress: There are some occasions on every trip where you might want to look a bit more dressed up, whether it’s spontaneous cocktails at a rooftop bar or spontaneous cocktails at a non-rooftop bar 😉 Okay, basically, bring this dress for cocktails. I brought a printed dress with a halter neckline for this purpose and it did the job.
  • 1 strapless tube dress : Why strapless? Doesn’t that sound impractical? Nope! A strapless tube dress is the perfect addition to your capsule minimalist wardrobe because it can function as a dress, easy beach cover-up AND if you wear it lower down on your waist, it doubles as a skirt. Genius.

1 maxi skirt

I find that maxi skirts with the elastic band waistline are the most versatile. Mine was black, which is ideal because a) it goes with everything and b) it doesn’t get dirty as easily so you can wear it more times. That said, feel free to pick one that is bolder and goes with your personal style (bearing in mind that it should fit any tops you bring).

10 days travel packing list

The key with picking these tops is they should match with your 1 pair of shorts (which we will discuss below), AND your maxi skirt AND your strapless tube dress. Opting for solid colours or a very subtle print is probably a good idea. Make sure the two tops you bring pass this test: would I wear it with my skirt, tube dress and shorts? If the answer is yes, throw them in the bag!

1 pair of shorts

Dark colours will work best (just for practical reasons). The key here is to make sure these shorts look good with every top you bring.

1 denim jacket

What would summer be without a perfect little denim jacket? Denim jackets look good on top of every summer outfit, whether it’s a dress or cute top/shorts combo. There’s no more versatile cover-up, I assure you.

10 days travel packing list

1 pair of yoga pants

These will be your PJs, so make sure they’re comfortable… the good thing about bringing yoga pants vs. actual pyjama pants is you can bust them out on long travel days (in a car, on a bus) and not look like a total weirdo, BUT also they can be used on a last minute athletic expedition of any kind, like a hike. Always good to have just in case.

1 comfy t-shirt

This will be the top you wear to sleep, so again, make sure it’s a comfortable one. I usually just bring a baggy concert tee or something. It’s important this is something you wouldn’t mind wearing in public, in case you want something comfy to wear on a long travel day or you just need an extra shirt for whatever reason.

1 pair of comfy walking shoes

Ah yes, shoooees. So I am personally one of those people that hates runners. I never wear runners unless I’m actually running, so my go-to walking shoes during the summer is a pair of really comfortable sandals.

Honestly, I could walk all day in my sandals. The key is to find something that could transition from day to night and also goes well with all your outfits. For you this might mean a pair of white sneakers, but for me it’s sandals. This is similar to my go-to pair – as a girl with wide feet, I find Clarks ultra comfortable.

Bosnia & Herzegovina is one of the most underrated countries in the world. There are so many beautiful must-sees and dos in Bosnia. Here is a post filled with stunning photos that will inspire your wanderlust!

1 pair of flip flops

Assuming you’ll be headed to any beach or pool at some point, flip flops are always a good idea. Plus, they’re lightweight, and offer you an alternative if your other shoes start pinching in the wrong places.

Since underwear takes up such little space, I usually bring a pair of underwear for every night of the trip. If you’re okay with doing laundry half-way through, feel free to cut this amount in half.

Usually 2-3 pairs will suffice – fewer if you pack merino wool ones like these that can last longer between washes.

1 strapless (or convertible), one regular.

I go for a one-piece because I like spaghetti too much.

10 days travel packing list

Refer to my full toiletries packing list here.

… and that’s it! Yes, seriously. If you roll things right and use packing cubes, they should all fit easily into a small weekender tote or a little suitcase.

My Minimalist Packing List (for Minimalist Travel in the Winter)

Minimalist winter travel is tough. I mean, when your jacket alone takes up the majority of your suitcase, then you’re in a tough spot… but, packing carry-on only is still possible, even in the winter! Here is a minimalist packing list for winter travel though that I invite you to copy!

1 very warm jacket/coat

Only bring one. Make sure it’s waterproof, cute and comfortable because it will be thrown on top of every single outfit you bring (and will feature predominantly in most photos). I would bring one that’s a little bit longer (past the butt) so you can be assured your sweaters won’t peak out from underneath weirdly.

Ugh. I bought this coat last winter and I've honestly been counting down the months so I can wear it again. Not only is it toasty warm, the hood is huge so when it rains, you're fully protected, and it's so poofy! And the perfect length!

Barbour International Quilted Napier Jacket

1-2 thermal base layer tops

These are the SECRET to staying warm without packing too much. You’ll want to look for thin, breathable tops that are built for the purpose of keeping heat in.

If you’re low on space, I’d recommend a base layer like this that’s made out of merino wool, because this material wicks moisture and is naturally resistant to bacteria, which means it’s way less likely to smell even after repeat wears. There are affordable options out there too like  this thermal to p  I picked up for less than $25 and wear all the time (though it doesn’t last as long between washes as the merino wool one).

Out of all my winter staples, the best value for money is this scoop neck base layer. Its neckline is great for (stealthy) layering, it's super lightweight, and once you layer up, it seals heat in to keep you toasty... all for less than a sit-down lunch!

This Surprisingly Affordable (Heat Tech) Top

1 pair thermal leggings

Similarly, having thermal leggings can be super handy – not only can you wear them with a dress or skirt and still stay warm, you can also layer them under jeans or regular pants.

Again, merino wool is a good material to look out for if you want repeat wears. I have this pair and love it.

For a more budget-friendly alternative, I have a  bunch of these  (for varying degrees of warmth) and they’re super affordable and comfy… though they will need to be washed more often.

1 fleece/down layer

When the weather is nice, wearing your big thick coat might seem like too much of a commitment.

That’s why I’d recommend bringing a thinner fleece or puffer that you could a) wear on its own for warmer days and b) use as an additional layer under your coat on colder days.

So good I have it in two colours! I don't understand how this thing is as warm considering how little it weighs, and how small it can scrunch up in your bag, BUT it's one of my winter favourites. I keep it as an emergency in my day bag and love wearing it for some extra warmth.

This Unbelievably Light Yet Warm Down Vest

1 warm cardigan

This can be layered over any tops you bring for a new look, and can be a great additional layer of warmth.

2 long sleeve tops

The most important thing is that your tops look good with any bottoms you bring.

2 pairs of jeans/pants (trousers)

Again, make sure they’re comfy. I would make at least one pair black just for practicality purposes. They should also coordinate well with any tops you bring, and should look good with your boots.

1 nice-looking tank top

A tank top in winter?!?! I haven’t gone off my rocker – this is just in case you need a top for a night out, or another special occasion where dressing up is necessary.

1 pair of leggings

If you bring leggings to sleep in as opposed to normal pyjama pants, then you can easily use them as a layering piece if it gets really cold.

This will be the shirt you wear to sleep, so make sure it’s comfortable, but also presentable enough that you wouldn’t hate being seen in public with it… just in case you need to throw it on as an additional layer.

1 pair of warm, comfortable boots

You will wear these all the time, I promise, so make sure they’re comfortable and waterproof.

Again, since underwear takes up such little space, I usually bring a pair of underwear for every night of the trip. If you’re okay with doing laundry half-way through, feel free to cut this amount in half.

You definitely don’t need more than 2.

1 pair of very warm wool socks: A must for layering

3-4 pairs of regular socks: To layer below and soak up all that sweet sweat 😉

1 warm scarf

You should aim for a stylish but warm scarf that you love (mainly because you’ll be wearing it often and in virtually every photo).

Other Tips for Minimalist Travel and Packing

Be sure to check out my list of carry-on travel mistakes to avoid for more tips.

Always wear your heaviest things on the plane

This is more to avoid overweight luggage fees than anything else, but always wear your bulkiest things on the plane.

Use packing cubes

Not only do they keep you organized, they help you save space too. You can see my full packing cubes showdown for a comparison of top brands, but spoiler, these are my favourites…

Eagle Creek Pack-It Original Packing Cubes Set

I adore packing cubes because they keep everything organized and can help you save space by squishing and condensing all your stuff. I've tested a bunch of the top brands and this set is my favourite.

Bring fabrics that don’t wrinkle

The key to a minimalist travel wardrobe is versatility and making the most of every piece you bring. Let’s be honest – we’re all lazy walrus people and when a shirt is wrinkled, we usually can’t be bothered to wear it or iron it, so it stays in the suitcase. By bringing fabrics that don’t wrinkle, you’re ensuring that you’ll actually wear everything you bring.

Remember that you can buy things!

Unless you’re going on an Arctic expedition, odds are your destination will be a place where goods such as toiletries and clothing can be purchased. Remembering this will help you avoid overpacking.

I highly recommend buying your own travel size bottles to fill up with your favourite shampoo – that way you can pack less than full bottles and reduce unnecessary plastic waste from the mini-ones you buy from the store.

I gotta take a hint from your book, Christina. I’m the worst person when it comes to travelling light! I have an upcoming trip to Bangkok in a month so I’ll definitely be checking out this post again for reference! 🙂 – Charmaine Ng | Architecture & Lifestyle Blog https://charmainenyw.com

Great list! Although I’m not a minimalist I do pack light. Great post! Atowle|https://formationvacations.com/

I’m usually pretty good about packing light. I have to say, if I am going somewhere where its going to be really warm (like not cool at night) I might swap about the yoga pants for another swim suit. And I agree about underwear, just bring one for each day, not the place to skimp!

I’m so bad at packing light! I really need to pack more dresses in the summer because they take up less room that shirts + shorts!

I love this! I always struggle with packing light because what if I need it. Then get there and realize I didn’t wear half the stuff. I am definitely going to try this on my next trip.

Tips on packing clothes

Now it’s time to pack your bag.

  • Check your list and lay out everything where you can see it. Do not add anything to this.
  • Roll it up: T-shirts and shorts should both be rolled to save space and reduce wrinkling. Start with a flat surface with a shirt face down. Fold the arms back so you have a perfect square. Fold in half vertically. Now roll from bottom to top.
  • Fold and go: Heavier materials, like khakis and sweaters, should be folded into squares.
  • Bag it: For underwear and delicate items like bathing suits, use mesh underwear bags that will allow security to see your items without touching them and keep smaller items organized.
  • Dress up. For dresses, skirts, blouses, or dress shirts, place each item on a hanger and place it in individual plastic dry cleaner bags. This keeps clothes wrinkle-free and organized.
  • Now you are ready to pack your bags. Stack the square shapes first, then the rolled items around those. Shoes and flip-flops tuck in the corner. Socks can be placed on shoes or bare. Place your cosmetic bag on top of your neatly folded clothes so you can easily reach them for a separate screening. Then place your plastic wrap over the dress and fold them to fit in the bag.

Tips on packing electronics

  • Labeling your items and cables
  • Take batteries out of all electronics and remotes so they don’t overheat and leak. Keep all your batteries together in one place.
  • Charge up all your rechargeable batteries a couple of days before you move.
  • Secure them in a plastic, dust-proof bag.

Tips on packing carry-on

You can use the Travel Essentials Packing List as a sample travel wardrobe as a stand alone minimalist packing list or as the main core of your clothing.   Long term travelers can use this list as well as vacation-goers. Keep reading to learn how.

Consisting of ten pieces of clothing, these are the essentials chosen specifically to provide you with optimal function while maximizing your potential for varying travel outfits. Ten pieces can create the ideal capsule wardrobe for travel and can also act as the essence to a larger packing list. Make sure you can mix and match each item.

For long trips in particular you’ll need to choose fabrics that can wash and dry quickly and easily. For trips less than two weeks you may need to rewear clothing (a common pro traveler technique).

THE PERFECT CAPSULE WARDROBE

WHERE AND WHEN ARE YOU TRAVELING?

This Travel Essentials packing list is the ideal capsule wardrobe for travel. You can easily travel with only ten pieces for Round the World trips , two week vacations , or even weekend travel . For cold weather, please read these tips .

Depending on the length of your trip there’s a good chance you’ll need to do laundry. For two week trips you can use the Maximista Packing List to make complete outfits for two weeks but this is the exception.

The key to traveling for more than three weeks is to do laundry once a week and just pack one week’s worth of clothing!

If you’re using the Travel Essentials Packing List for longer trips, hand washing is necessary. Make sure to choose the right fabrics for your basics is necessary to ensure maximum use and swift washing times. Suggested items to pack include a universal rubber sink plug and packable clothesline to make this process a breeze!

GUIDELINES TO CHOOSE APPROPRIATE ITEMS

As with all the lists, it is important to select clothing items that work well together and can be used interchangeably.

FABRIC: Flexible for short trips; Strict for long trips: durable quick dry synthetics and fast drying light fabrics

Ideally, all tops should mix and match with each other for the cold. Must match all bottoms to make the most of your travel wardrobe.

One Long Sleeve Shirt Light quick drying fabrics in the heat. Able to layer over other tops and dresses as a light jacket or cover up. Button up tops are versatile. Merino wool or cashmere to act as a top layer over other tops as needed.

Three sets of Bottoms  Highly dependent on your destination and the weather, choose items that can be used for every activity. Should mix and match with all tops.

Whether you choose long pants, capris, shorts, or skirts is up to you.  Jeans work well  on vacations, trips to metropolitan cities, or cool climates. Very destination dependent. They may be thick but hardly have to be washed.

Two Dresses or if you prefer separates choose skirts instead. You can go one of two ways with this: bold colors or prints or classic style with neutral color. It depends on your style.

Versatility is key. For dresses choose one that can take you from day to night with some added accessories or an extra hint of makeup. Minimum should be one day/night and one day. 26 Stress-Free Packing Tips for Travel

Updated : June 24, 2024

AAA Travel Editor, Patricia Miller

Table of contents, pre-packing preparation, packing strategies and space savers, special considerations, additional travel tips for packing , pack for your dream trip with aaa travel.

Are you feeling overwhelmed by the thought of packing for a trip? We've created this comprehensive guide to simplify the process and alleviate any travel prep stress.

Whether you're exploring a top travel US destination or venturing abroad, these packing tips for travel are designed to help you easily conquer your packing to-do

list. Read on to discover hacks for maximizing space and travel essentials you never knew you needed.

Before you dive headfirst into packing, a little preparation can go a long way in saving you time and stress. Here are some tips to keep your packing process organized.

1. Start Planning Early

10 days travel packing list

First and foremost, give yourself plenty of time to pack. It’s a good idea to start planning 2-3 weeks ahead of time. Whenever you think of something you’ll need, jot it down or make a list on an app. Even better, leave your suitcase where you can see it and throw things into it during the weeks leading up to your trip.

2. Research the Destination

10 days travel packing list

Before diving into packing, especially for international travel , take a deep breath and research your destination. Understanding the climate, culture and any local restrictions will be your packing compass.

Will there be cool evenings that require a light jacket? Is it the rainy season, necessitating an umbrella? Knowing these things beforehand can help you avoid overpacking unnecessary items or feeling out of place.

It's important for women traveling alone to research cultural or legal dress codes in their destination country. For example, when traveling to Italy, consider bringing a shawl to cover your shoulders when visiting churches. With a little research, your suitcase will reflect your destination and not just your wardrobe.

3. Choose Your Luggage

10 days travel packing list

Choosing the right luggage is key to a smooth packing experience. Think about the length of your trip and your mode of transportation. Weekend getaways may just need a carry-on, while longer adventures may require a checkable bag.

Consider a travel pack for hands-free travel or a suitcase with maneuverable wheels for navigating airports and uneven terrain. Opt for a well-made, lightweight option that prioritizes durability and ease of movement.

4. Create a Travel Checklist

10 days travel packing list

Creating a travel checklist streamlines your packing process, ensuring you don't miss anything essential. Start by planning outfits for each day of your trip, considering your itinerary and weather conditions.

This not only ensures you pack everything you need but also helps avoid overpacking similar items. With a checklist in hand, you've conquered packing anxiety and are ready to explore!

H3: 5. Place Necessities in Carry-on

10 days travel packing list

Stow necessities in your carry-on. This may seem too obvious, but medicine, expensive tech equipment, jewelry and essential toiletries are things you don’t want to lose and should keep close at hand.

In the unfortunate case that your luggage is lost or delayed, having your essential items will ensure you can get by on your trip until your situation is resolved. Consider also packing a change of clothes so you have a clean outfit to wear while you wait for your bag to arrive.

Your research and prep work are done! Now that those empty suitcases are staring you down, let's explore some space-saving packing strategies to keep everything efficient and organized.

6. Utilize Packing Cubes

10 days travel packing list

Invest in a set of packing cubes to keep items separated. This will make finding things in your luggage, like your first pajamas for unwinding at the hotel, a breeze. The packing cubes keep your neatly folded or rolled clothes from wrinkling.

7. Embrace Rolling Your Clothes

10 days travel packing list

Speaking of rolling clothes, many travelers firmly believe it’s the best way to keep your garments crease-free. Here's how to do it:

  • Lay your clothing piece flat and smooth out any wrinkles.
  • Fold a small section of the piece at the bottom inward.
  • Start tightly rolling from the bottom to the top. Use a tie or soft ribbon to secure the piece from unrolling.

This is a great space-saving technique that allows you to fit more into your bag.

8. Pack Versatile Clothing

10 days travel packing list

Packing multiple outfits with your clothing pieces minimizes what you need to bring. Plan on wearing versatile neutrals like beige, navy and black, which mix and match well, allowing you to create multiple looks with a few key pieces.

For a pop of color, a scarf or jewelry does the trick nicely without taking up valuable luggage space. And remember, dark colors don't show spills as much as light colors do. Along with neutral colors, items that are classic cuts, like button-down shirts or a maxi dress that can transform from day to night, are ideal.

9. Lean on the Power of Layers

10 days travel packing list

Packing versatile pieces that you can layer allows you to conquer a wider range of activities and temperatures. Consider bringing lightweight tank tops or tees, which you can easily warm up with a cardigan or sweater.

A fluffy scarf can be used for both chilly evenings and as a cozy airplane blanket during your flight. By layering, you pack less while maximizing your outfit options.

10. Consider Laundry Options

10 days travel packing list

Researching laundry options at your destination allows you to pack lighter. Check if your accommodation has in-unit laundry or if there are laundromats nearby. Pack a travel-sized detergent or invest in convenient detergent sheets for handwashing in your sink.

Prioritize quick-drying fabrics and versatile pieces that mix and match, creating multiple outfits. By planning for on-the-go laundry, you can pack fewer clothes and avoid overpacking.

11. Stay Connected With Chargers

10 days travel packing list

Pack an extra phone charger and a portable power bank. It’s easy and fun to take photos for Instagram with your smartphone, but you can wear your battery down quicker than you may realize. And trying to find an outlet in a public place to charge your phone when your battery is at 4 percent power is almost impossible.

A portable power bank can give your phone a much-needed boost to keep you capturing your adventures throughout the day. Just remember to charge the power bank before you head out the door!

12. Pack Light on Toiletries

10 days travel packing list

Bring travel sizes of grooming items like toothpaste, shampoo and deodorant, or fill up little empties with your favorite brand to save valuable space in your suitcase. To prevent leaks during transport, be sure to pack your travel tubes in a sealable plastic bag. Consider using solid toiletries like shampoo and conditioner bars to maximize space and minimize spills.

13. Separate Your Shoes From Clothes

10 days travel packing list

Put shoes in thin plastic bags like a grocery bag or dry cleaning bag to keep them from touching your clean clothes. Pack footwear and other heavy things at the bottom of your suitcase to keep your clothes from wrinkling. This also helps distribute the weight evenly, making your suitcase easier to move.

14. Keep Your Clothes Smelling Fresh

10 days travel packing list

For an extra touch of freshness, tuck a fabric softener sheet into your suitcase. While it won't necessarily remove wrinkles, it can help minimize mild odors and leave your clothes smelling pleasant when you unpack. Avoid using too many sheets, as the scent can overwhelm a confined space.

15. Maximize Dead Space

10 days travel packing list

The key to packing like a pro lies in maximizing space. This means conquering every nook and cranny of your suitcase. Start by stuffing socks, underwear and other small items into shoes to fill their empty space.

Take advantage of rolled-up scarves, smaller tank tops or even rolled clothes to fill in those hard-to-reach areas. Remember, every bit of space you save means more room for those trip souvenirs!

16. Try the 5-4-3-2-1 Packing Method

10 days travel packing list

Struggling with overpacking? The 5-4-3-2-1 method can help! This simple rule ensures you safe space by only packing what you need:

  • Four bottoms
  • Three accessories
  • One swimsuit

For maximum outfit creation potential, stick to a similar color palette for your clothing. This allows for easy mixing and matching throughout your trip

17. Wear Bulkier Clothes on the Plane

10 days travel packing list

Airplane cabins can get chilly, especially if the air conditioning is blasting. To fight the cold and free up space in your suitcase, consider wearing your bulkier clothes onto the plane. This could include a sweater, a heavier jacket or bigger boots.

This method will keep you comfortable during your flight, but also allow you to pack lighter. Remember to choose clothing items that are easy to layer and remove as temperatures change during your journey to your destination.

Not every trip is the same? When it comes to how to pack for a trip, there are special considerations to tackle, from navigating airline restrictions to conquering diverse climates.

18. Pack for Your Itinerary

10 days travel packing list

When booking your trip, you probably have a good idea of the activities you'll enjoy during your stay. Translate that itinerary into your suitcase! Long days of sightseeing call for comfortable walking shoes and versatile layers that adapt to changing temperatures.

Prioritizing poolside relaxation? Pack breezy clothes and a couple of swimsuits. Don't forget any special events or excursions—a dressier outfit for a fancy dinner or adventure-ready gear for planned hikes will ensure you're prepared. Planning outfits around your itinerary will help you feel comfortable and confident throughout your trip—and ready to tackle anything that comes your way.

19. Consider Packing Essentials for Young Children

10 days travel packing list

Traveling with young children requires extra planning, from transportation to packing. While your itinerary is the most important, prioritize packing essentials to keep your little’s content and comfortable. Pack familiar items, like their favorite stuffed animal or blanket, for when they need to relax or take a nap.

Remember special medications, extra pairs of clothes for accidental messes and clothing layers for the plane. Pack plenty of healthy, high-protein snacks and nutritious food bars to keep your little ones happy and fueled throughout the journey. These essential travel survival tools will help create a smoother travel experience for your family.

20. Bring Home With You

10 days travel packing list

Throw in some scented soap to add a touch of familiarity to your bath routine. Use a favorite scent to make you feel more at home and relaxed at the end of a long day of exploring your destination. Know your bathroom will have a tub? Consider packing a bath bomb to add another layer of relaxation to your bathtub routine.

21. Prepare for Bad Weather

10 days travel packing list

Be prepared for bad weather and pack proper gear. Even sunnier forecasts can shift quickly, so layering with breathable layers is a smart idea. If you find yourself in a sudden thunderstorm, you’ll be glad you brought a mini umbrella, a light raincoat and a cheap plastic rain poncho.

22. Bring an Empty Water Bottle

10 days travel packing list

Stash an empty water bottle in your carry-on to fill at water fountains. This way, you won’t have to throw away unfinished bottled drinks as you go through the TSA security screening line or wait for the flight attendant to bring you a beverage.

Using a reusable bottle is both eco-friendly and can also save you money on overpriced bottles of water you find in airport shops.

23. Remember To Pack for Your Service Animal

10 days travel packing list

Just like you, your furry friend will need essentials while traveling. Pack food, medication and waste disposal bags to last the trip duration, and include extra in case of any delays.

Don’t forget their favorite couple of toys and a copy of their service certification, in case it’s requested. By planning ahead, you and your service animal can enjoy a smooth and stress-free adventure.

Below are some final travel packing tips to consider for a perfectly polished packing job.

24. Weigh Your Bag

10 days travel packing list

Skip the baggage fee surprise! Before your trip, weigh your luggage at home with a handy luggage scale. Knowing your bag's weight beforehand allows you to strategically redistribute items or maximize your carry-on allowance if needed. Remember, airlines have strict weight limits. A little pre-departure planning can save you money, frustration and a last-minute scramble at the airport.

25. Protect Your Valuables

10 days travel packing list

There are a few ways you can actively protect your valuables, even after you hand over your checked bag at the airport:

  • Utilize TSA-approved locks: If you must pack valuables in your checked bag, invest in a TSA-approved lock. These allow security checks while keeping your belongings secure.
  • Carry-on essentials: Keep important documents, medications and a small amount of cash in your carry-on for easy access and peace of mind in case of checked luggage delays.
  • Consider a Pacsafe: These travel bags feature slash-resistant materials and unique locking mechanisms, offering an extra layer of security in crowded areas like airports or busy cities.
  • AirTag or Tile your luggage: adding an AirTag or a Tile to your luggage can add peace of mind if the unfortunate situation occurs in which your suitcase is lost.

By following these tips, you can travel with confidence and know your valuables are protected.

26. Complete a Final Bag Check

10 days travel packing list

Once you’re fully packed and weighed your luggage, take a few minutes to ensure a smooth departure. Run through your travel checklist to confirm all items are accounted for.

Review your planned outfits, making sure you've packed everything you need. Finally, pack any comfort essentials for your plane ride, like a travel neck pillow, earplugs or a good book. With a quick final check, you can confidently head to the airport, ready for a stress-free start to your adventure.

The Ultimate Travel Packing Checklist for 2024 and the Best Vacation Packing Tips (Printable)

Ultimate Travel Packing List

Before taking a vacation, it’s a good idea plan. In addition to planning your itinerary, you also need to figure out what you will pack. Taking the time to sort out what you need to bring before you leave is an excellent way to prepare well for your trip. If you haven’t traveled in a while or you feel like you’re always missing essential items when you travel, this travel packing guide may help. Are you taking a trip soon? Here’s what you need to know before you pack for your next trip or vacation.

Table of Contents

What to Consider Before You Pack

Before you begin packing, it’s best to think more about the trip you will be taking. After all, not all trips are the same, and some trips may require different items.

Here are some things to consider:

  • What bags to bring: Your travel plans and airline’s baggage policy may dictate what bags you bring. Knowing what bags you plan to bring before you begin packing is a must. That way, you can strategize and not overpack based on the luggage space available.
  • Number of travel days: You want to have plenty of clothes and essentials for your entire trip. Make sure that you pack plenty of items for the number of days you plan to travel. If you’re staying in a home rental with laundry facilities, you may be able to pack less and do laundry during your trip. If you prefer to pack light, check to see if you’ll have access to laundry facilities or if there is a laundromat near your accommodation.
  • The weather situation: You want to make sure that you pack clothes that will be comfortable for the weather. Check the expected temperature, see if there will be rain or snow, and let this information guide you when packing. If you don’t pack appropriate clothing and gear, you may have to spend money when you arrive or risk being very uncomfortable. If you have room, bring a compact umbrella.
  • The type of trip you plan to have: Your planned activities and travel style will also dictate what you need to pack. If you’re all about comfort and hope to lounge around a lot, you may not need to pack many dress clothes. If you’re an adventure seeker who plans to participate in recreational activities, athletic attire and appropriate shoes are necessary.
  • What you can buy at your destination: Some items may make more sense to buy at your destination. For example, if you’re only bringing a carry-on bag, you might decide to buy a bottle of full-size sunscreen after you arrive. When creating your packing list, note items that you can easily buy at your destination to avoid wasting space.

The Vacationer Tip

Review your airline’s baggage policies before packing. Here are polices for some of the top airlines.

How to Decide Which Items to Put in Which Bags

When it comes time to pack for your trip, take some time to think about which bag each item will go in; for example, if you’re planning to check luggage, some things may make more sense to go in your checked bag rather than your carry-on bag. Additionally, some items may not be allowed in your carry-on bag—such as full-sized liquid products.

If you take any medication or have other essential items that you’re packing, those items should stay close to you—such as in a carry-on bag or personal item, like a backpack or purse. Checked bags may get lost or delayed, and you don’t want to be without essential medications or other necessary items. If you’re packing medications, the TSA recommends they be clearly labeled.

As you pack your carry-on bag, It’s also a good idea to bring at least one change of clothes with you. If something happens to your checked baggage, you’ll be thankful that you have some clothes to change into after traveling.

If you’re traveling with a laptop or another electronic device, like an iPad, keep those items in an easy-to-access place (like upfront or in a laptop pocket). These items will need to be removed from your carry-on bag, purse, or backpack during security screening. If they’re not accessible, it will take you longer to get through security, and you’ll hold up the line.

Packing Liquids

As you prepare for your trip, don’t forget to consider which liquids you’ll need to bring. If you’re bringing some checked luggage, you’ll need to consider which liquid items will go in your checked bag vs your carry-on luggage.

If you plan to pack liquids in your carry-on bag, they must be in containers that are 3.4 ounces or less. They also need to fit in one quart-sized resealable bag. If you’re traveling with multiple people, each person can have one quart-sized resealable bag with appropriately sized liquids. Ensure that all containers are sealed well, so you don’t have a mess all over your suitcase and belongings.

When you go through the security screening process at the airport, you’ll need to remove your bag of liquids and place it in a bin; You do not have to remove your liquids if you have TSA PreCheck or Global Entry . To conserve space, focus on packing liquids that you need. Most hotels and some home rentals provide essentials like shampoo, conditioner, and soap. Before packing, check to see what will be provided at your accommodation.

Packing Shoes

Most people plan to bring more than one pair of shoes when traveling. If you have several pairs of shoes that you want to bring, you may be worried about wasting space. But if you’re strategic, you can pack several shoes and make it work.

One way to save on space is to use the empty area inside your shoes to your advantage. You can fill your shoes with smaller items such as socks, underwear, and belts. If you’re worried about dirty shoes, put disposable shower caps on the bottoms of your shoes. If you don’t have these, you can use smaller plastic bags to protect your clothes from dirt.

Ideas to Maximize Space

If you’re looking to maximize the space that you have available, you may be wondering how to pack your items to save room. Here are some techniques that may help:

Packing cubes: Some travelers use packing cubes for their clothing items and accessories. These cubes can help by slightly compressing your items, so they take up a bit less space in your bag. If you’ve never tried packing cubes, it may be worthwhile to give them a chance.

Rolling instead of folding: Another option to consider is rolling your clothes. This does take time,  but you may find that you’re able to fit more items in your bag this way. Just make sure that you remember to roll your clothes back up when packing up to head home.

Choose versatile clothing items: You can also save on space by strategically choosing which clothing items you bring. Consider packing versatile clothing items that work well for multiple outfits. As an example, packing clothing with neutral colors is a great idea. You can wear items multiple times without it looking obvious. Doing this will make it easier to mix and match outfits, and you may find that you can pack fewer items.

Buy some items at your destination: If you only have so much space to work with, buying some things at your destination may be the best bet. Make sure that you consider cost and availability before choosing to do this.

Tips for success

With proper planning and good organization, you can ensure that you pack everything that you need for your upcoming trip. The following tips can help you have more success:

  • Make a packing list and check each item off as you pack . It may seem silly, but this practice can help you avoid forgetting must-have items. You’ll be glad that you have what you need.
  • Start with your must-have items. As you begin to pack, start with essential items. This way, you don’t forget to bring what you truly need.
  • Keep items packed up. Once you check an item off your list, ensure it stays in your packed bag. If you remove something and forget to make a note, you may end up leaving without it.
  • Don’t forget masks. When traveling during the pandemic, you’ll want to bring plenty of masks. Mask requirements vary by destination, and you want to make sure that you have what you need before you arrive.
  • Know your airline’s baggage rules. If you bring an overweight or too-large bag, you may get stuck paying extra fees. Check your airline’s sizing and weight rules before you begin packing, and double-check the weight once your bag is all packed up.
  • Consider wrinkles when choosing clothing items. Some fabrics are more wrinkle-resistant than others. If you don’t have access to an iron or a dryer, (I’m not the only one that de-wrinkles my clothes this way, right?!) try to pick materials that are less likely to get wrinkled.
  • Wear bulky items. Bulky items take up a lot of space and weight. If you plan to bring a bulky winter jacket or boots, for example, wear them on the plane. You’ll have what you need without taking up space and weight in your bag.
  • Do laundry while traveling. If at all possible, do laundry while traveling. Whether you stay in a home rental with laundry facilities or stop at a laundromat, this can help reduce the number of clothes you need to pack.
  • Don’t overpack. It can be easy to overpack accidentally. Focus on what you truly need instead of bringing “maybe” items.
  • Ensure your house is in order. Before leaving, make sure all of your lights are off and your alarm system is set if you have one. Other things to do include watering your plants, taking out the trash, setting automatic pet feeders, and notifying your credit card companies of your travel.

Yes, you can travel with liquids. Liquid containers must be no larger than 3.4 ounces, and all liquid containers must fit in one resealable quart-sized bag. If you want to bring larger liquid items, they must be packed in checked baggage.

Experiment with different methods of packing. Some travelers find success using packing cubes, while others find better success rolling their clothes. The more you experiment, the better you’ll get at maximizing space.

Make a packing list and check each item off as you put it in your bag.

Consider keeping electronics, valuables, money, your passport, essential medicine, and a change of clothes with you. If your checked baggage gets lost or is delayed, you’ll have what you need with you.

While you can do this, it’s recommended that you don’t put valuables in your checked baggage. Instead, place them in your carry-on bag or personal item. Putting valuables in a purse or backpack under the seat in front of you is best because it will be near you. If you place valuables in a checked bag, they could be stolen.

The Vacationer’s Final Thoughts

Don’t leave your packing until the very last moment. If you do this, you may be unprepared once you arrive at your destination. With proper planning, packing can be easy and quick. Follow the tips above for the best success as you begin to pack for your trip. See our beach vacation packing list for more specifics if you will be vacationing near the ocean or a lake.

When it comes to picking the perfect travel bag , versatility is key. With that in mind, it’s well worth investing in one—or more—of the best convertible bags. As you can likely tell by the name, these innovative accessories can be worn at least two ways—and in some cases, three or four. Some examples of great options for travelers include a tote that transforms into a backpack to help more evenly distribute weight (and avoid an achy shoulder in the event of overpacking), a purse that turns into a clutch to take you from day to night, and a shoulder bag that can also be worn crossbody . When you've only got a carry-on suitcase to work with, having bags that serve multiple functions can help trim down your packing list.

When selecting this edit of the best multi-purpose bags, I looked for ones designed with durability and functionality in mind, be it in the form of several pockets, a waterproof exterior, sturdy straps, and so on. Keep reading to discover 16 excellent convertible backpacks, purses, and weekenders from Traveler -approved brands like July, MZ Wallace, and Béis, broken down by category.

The best for travel days

The best for parents, the best for day to night, the best for commuting.

This endlessly versatile bag from Tumi can be carried as a backpack (the padded adjustable straps provide plenty of support) or a tote bag, making it especially convenient for sightseeing. It also has a removable leather top handle, two front zip pockets, and a dedicated pocket for your smartphone.

10 days travel packing list

I took the older version of this belt bag-slash-fanny pack everywhere on my two-week Hawaii honeymoon. The updated version, available in 15 colors and patterns, is just as impressive with its water-repellent construction, extendable strap, and an exterior zippered compartment with interior pockets for small but necessary items like keys, credit cards, and lip balm. Wear it around your waist, across your chest, or on your shoulder.

This convertible bag—which features a fully removable bottom compartment that doubles as a packing cube —works exceptionally well as a weekender and an everyday bag. The removable padded laptop sleeve is just the icing on the cake.

Few travel bags are as innovative as this tiny-but-mighty crossbody option. When emptied and not in use, it can be easily stored away or conveniently carried in hand (or via wrist) using the attached strap.

Image may contain: Bag, Accessories, Handbag, Tote Bag, and Baggage

Ideal for on-the-go families, this diaper bag easily converts from a backpack to a shoulder bag. It has plenty of pockets to help you stay organized and an insulated pouch for snacks or bottles.

Image may contain: Bag, Backpack, Baggage, and First Aid

This workhorse of a bag—which can be worn as a traditional backpack or shoulder bag thanks to its long strap—is equipped with dedicated spots for all your (and your kids’) essentials, including diapers, wipes, bottles, toys, and more. Its waterproof nylon construction is a bonus.

Image may contain: Bag, Tote Bag, Accessories, and Handbag

This chic quilted backpack is unique in that it doubles (er, triples) as a crossbody or shoulder bag. The 18 pockets(!) ensure you stay organized while on the go, while the built-in luggage sleeve allows for hands-free carrying—a must when trekking through an airport with little ones in tow.

Image may contain: Accessories, Bag, Handbag, Purse, Tote Bag, and Canvas

As you can guess by its name, Calpak's convertible stroller caddy crossbody seamlessly converts from a crossbody bag to a stroller caddy (and vice-versa). Don’t be fooled by its small size: The bag features two insulated bottle pockets plus expandable sides for extra storage.

Image may contain: Bag, Accessories, Handbag, Smoke Pipe, and Briefcase

Designed to be carried everywhere, this miniature hardshell case from Traveler -approved suitcase brand July stands out for its detachable strap (which converts it into a clutch) and durability.

Made from 100 percent Italian leather, this timeless accessory can be worn as a shoulder bag or crossbody simply by adjusting the strap length. Its internal double compartments, center zippered divider, and back slip pocket are equally impressive.

Image may contain: Accessories, Bag, Handbag, and Purse

This sleek leather bag is named for how the buckled tabs embrace its size—adorable, I know—and it’s just as functional as it is cute. The adjustable shoulder strap can be removed, allowing you to carry it as a clutch for a formal event.

Image may contain: Accessories, Bag, Handbag, and Purse

Behold, your new summer wardrobe staple : the Staud Bean Convertible Leather clutch. Thanks to its clever convertible and removable strap, the purse can be worn as a clutch, shoulder bag, or wristlet.

The aptly named Transform Tote from Pond Los Angeles is a favorite of associate commerce editor Meaghan Kenny , who describes it as “the most functional tote I've ever used” thanks to its roomy interior, sleek design, and water-resistant construction. Plus, it can be worn not two, not three, but four ways: as a shoulder bag, a crossbody bag (thanks to its longer adjustable strap), a backpack, or on top of your carry-on courtesy of the built-in trolley sleeve.

Image may contain: Bag, Accessories, Handbag, and Backpack

This office-appropriate backpack will garner some compliments thanks to its structured silhouette and textured leather construction. The padded laptop compartment and multiple storage pockets add an extra-functional touch. Simply pull and extend the back strap to wear it as a crossbody or over the shoulder.

Image may contain: Bag, and Briefcase

Whether worn as a backpack or carried as a briefcase, this convertible Timbuk2 bag was designed with savvy professionals—looking at you, business travelers —in mind. The luggage sleeve, which allows for hands-free carrying, is a bonus.

Image may contain: Bag, Tote Bag, Accessories, and Handbag

During the workweek, carry this Mark & Graham bag as a traditional work tote and stash your tablet inside the matching laptop sleeve. Come the weekend, switch things up by wearing it as a shoulder bag (there are built-in double shoulder straps) or a crossbody bag (I love the style of the attachable twill crossbody strap). Best of all, it can be monogrammed with your initials.

How to be a minimalist while packing a suitcase.

Young adult woman writing list of accessories and travel stuff before going on summer holidays - ... [+] Travel and vacation concept

You can be the most clever packing expert, schlep only a carry-on, and still pack way more than you need for your trip. Here’s the truth: being a minimalist while packing your suitcase will save you time and money while getting from point A to point B and also while getting ready while traveling.

If you’re looking for the best ways to cut down on what you pack in order to only bring the essentials, you’ll want to read on. Here are the best tips for being a minimalist while packing a suitcase—no matter where you’re jetting off to.

Make a List

It can be easy to overpack if you don’t have a game plan. Avoid throwing in handfuls of random garments by loosely planning your outfits for each day or specific activity. If you know how many formal evenings, active mornings, beach days, etc, you may have on your trip, you’ll be able to pack exactly what you need for each occasion—nothing more, nothing less.

Wear Neutral Colors

The trick to packing light is being able to mix and match multiple pieces over the days, which is way, way easier if you’re only packing like colours. For example, you could decide to only pack black clothing if you want to be able to put together a super quick and re-wearable outfit. This mix-and-match method will also work with whites, beiges, and even neutral pops of color like olive and navy.

Choose Footwear Carefully

Although it’s easy to squish down and roll your clothes, squeezing multiple pairs of shoes into a suitcase will always be a struggle—even for frequent flyers. If you’re flying to a warm destination, you can probably get away with a pair of sandals and a light pair of sneakers or espadrilles. If you’re traveling in the winter, wear your boots or clunkier shoes on the airplane and pack your more formal shoes. Consider investing in a pair of espadrilles, which are casual enough to wear during the day, but also transition quite seamlessly into evening wear.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024, keep a pre-packed cosmetics case.

While having your day-to-day toothbrush and shampoo bottles may seem like a non-negotiable, keeping a pre-packed cosmetic case with all of your go-to toiletries will save you time, planning, and a ton of space. You don’t have to continue buying mini bottles, either. We recommend picking up a set of reusable hard glass bottles that you can fill with your favourite products. This cuts down on the size of your toiletry bag without having to keep rebuying those wasteful mini bottles of shampoo and soap.

Always Bring a Canvas Tote

Sometimes packing minimally can be nerve-wracking especially if you spot something special abroad that you want to bring back home and don’t have the space in your small luggage. Consider tucking a canvas tote into the bottom of you suitcase (it can be the same one you bring to the market or the beach). If you find that you just can’t fit everything back into your suitcase at the end of your trip, you can roll as much of your clothes as you can into your tote bag and use it as a carry-on.

Bring Half of What You Packed

Here’s where we separate the packing novices from the next-level packing wizards. Once you’ve carefully selected all the neutrals you’ll bring along with you, pull out about half of what you packed and tuck it back into your dresser drawers. You’d be surprised how many times you’ll be tempted to re-wear your most comfy jeans or your favourite sweater while abroad.
