20 Essential Things to Do Before Your Cruise (in last 30 days)

If you’re going on a cruise, you might be wondering what you need to do before your cruise. While cruising is a fun and relaxing vacation, there are some important pre-cruise travel planning steps.

In fact, if you forget to do some of these things, you could have a serious problem, including being denied boarding.

Planning a cruise can get stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. This pre-cruise checklist for the last 30 days before a cruise, will help you to make sure you don’t forget a thing!

With this list of essential things to do before your cruise, you’ll keep track of everything you need to do, from booking hotels, excursions, cruise packing & more.

Things Cruise Passengers Should to Do Before a Cruise

1. Online Check-in

Before your cruise, you’ll do need to do your online check in on the cruise line website or app. It’s a good idea to do your online check in around 30 days before your cruise. However, this can vary by cruise line.

For example, Royal Caribbean allows cruise passengers to check in as early as 45 days before their cruise. Carnival Cruise Line’s online check in access begins 14 days prior to sailing.

Your cruise line will allow you to book an embarkation time on boarding day or you may be assigned one.

Passport Information

When doing your online check-in, make sure to have your passport or government ID on hand of everyone in your party, as you’ll have to enter the information. You may be instructed to scan a photo of the document to upload to the app.

Tip: Check your passport expiry date as early as possible in case you need to have it renewed.

Health Questionnaire

You may also have a short health questionnaire to complete. Some cruise lines will ask you to return to the health questionnaire in the last 24 hours before your cruise.

Take note of the instructions, as may differ from one cruise line to another. Health, vaccination and travel protocols are subject to change, so keep up to date on the cruise line website and by checking your emails.

Credit Card

You’ll need to enter your credit card information to keep on file for onboard purchases. One credit card can be used for all members of your party. If you choose to pay off your onboard account in cash, you can do this on the cruise ship with guest services.

Tip: Consider prepaying gratuities and pre-booking shore excursions so you don’t have a big bill at the end of your cruise.

2. Download the Cruise line App

Most cruise lines have a cruise line app and recommend you download it.

In some cases there may be information that you need to complete on the cruise line app. For example, if you’re booked on a Princess Cruise , you will need to do your online check in on the MedallionClass™ app.

However, the cruise line app is handy to have for all cruise lines and is best downloaded before you board. You may be able to do your safety briefing or emuster drill on your phone, view the daily planner and menus, and message other guests on board.

3. Make Hotel Reservations & Travel Arrangements

If you haven’t already made your hotel reservations for a night before your cruise, then make sure to do this now. If you’ve already made your hotel reservations, this is a good time to check back to see if there have been any reductions in the hotel price.

Make sure to check if your hotel offers a shuttle to the cruise port, and otherwise consider your transportation to the ship on embarkation day .

4. Print Luggage Tags and Cruise Documents

Remember to print out your cruise luggage tags as well as your cruise documents, shore excursion confirmations and hotel reservations.

Even if you have them on your phone, if you don’t have Wi-Fi at some point it can get complicated. Having your hotel reservation printed it out, as well as any other reservations will give you peace of mind.

5. Research Cruise Ports and Book Shore Excursions

One of the biggest mistakes rookie cruisers make , is not researching cruise ports enough. You don’t want to arrive in the port of call with nothing planned.

Whether you want to explore on your own, book shore excursions privately or with the cruise line, make sure to research before you go. 

If you’re planning on doing cruise line excursions , be aware that they can and do sell out. It’s best to book shore excursions as soon as they become available or within the last month before your cruise.

6. Purchase Cruise Packages

If you haven’t done so already, now is a good time to book your cruise drink packages and dining packages. Often, cruise lines will offer a discount for booking online before your cruise.

Wifi packages are also available.

7. Make Onboard Reservations

Make onboard reservations for specialty dining restaurants, spa treatments and entertainment options if they’re offered (ie. booking a show).

Availability may be limited so it’s best to reserve as much as you can about 30 days (or earlier) before your cruise.

8. Start a Packing Checklist

Even if you’re not ready to pack yet, you’ll want to start a cruise packing list about a month before your cruise. You may also want to have a place in your home to place items you want to bring on your cruise vacation.

Make sure to try on any cruise outfits that you haven’t worn in a while, to make sure they fit and that you feel your best.

Things to remember include toiletries , cruise essentials and outfits for formal or chic nights .

9. Join a Cruise Roll Call or Facebook Group

Joining a cruise roll call or facebook group for your specific cruise can be really helpful. In these groups, people will share information about the cruise and chat about the excursions and ports.

You’ll also be able to “virtually” meet people before you go on your sailing. If you have questions about your cruise this is also a really good place to ask them.

You could find cruise line roll calls on the Cruise Critic message boards and on other online forums, as well as on Facebook. 

10. Consider Travel Insurance

If you haven’t purchased travel insurance at the time that you booked your cruise, its still a good idea.

Anything can happen, from canceled flights that result in passengers missing a cruise, to an unfortunate medical emergency. Medical interventions on the cruise ship or in a cruise port of call can add up to several thousands of dollars.

For peace of mind, it’s important to make sure that you have adequate travel insurance before your cruise vacation.

11. Withdraw Cash or Foreign Currency

If you’re taking cash on your cruise as spending money , make sure to go to the ATM or your bank to withdraw money in advance of your cruise. If you need foreign currency you may need to allow some time and order this from your bank.

Tip: Save your small bills and bring them along to use for tips (for bartenders, room service and porters).

12. Alert Your Credit Card Company

And if you don’t travel often, it’s a good idea to alert your credit card company and let them know that you will be on a cruise and in certain cruise ports of call.

While some credit card companies don’t require you to do this, many people do report that they’ve had their credit card blocked or declined when travelling, especially if they made a large purchase. 

Since you don’t want to have a problem, you may want to call your credit card and let them know, or see if you can update this on their website.

13. Bid for Cabin Upgrades

In the last few weeks before your cruise, you may get an email from your cruise line with an invitation to bid for a cabin upgrade .

While there are some potential downsides to getting an upgraded stateroom (like receiving a bad cabin location ), you can get a great deal!

If you don’t mind the mystery, consider placing a bid on a cabin upgrade and see what happens.

14. Get to Know Your Cruise Ship

Get orientated more quickly to your cruise ship be researching it before your cruise. You can do this by watching cruise ship tours and review videos. You can also pick up a cruise line brochure at a travel agent office or download the cruise ship deck plans.

15. Check on Cell Phone Plans

Cell phone service and normal wifi plans won’t work the same way on a cruise. Plan in advance by checking out the cruise ship internet plans to find one that suits your needs.

It’s also a good idea to check on international plans with your cell phone provider. While most of then time this won’t be the best solution for cell phone use on the cruise ship, it can be great for days on land before and during your cruise.

16. Make Self-care Appointments

Consider the appointments that you need to make before your cruise. This may include making an appointment at your hairdresser for a cut or color, booking a manicure and pedicure, having your eyebrows done, bikini wax and any other types of self-care.

17. Refill and Bring Extra Prescription Medication

Don’t forget to refill and prescriptions you’ll need while traveling. Cruise lines recommend that you bring some extra medication with you on your cruise. However, this is a good idea whenever you travel.

Make sure to plan for and pick up extra prescription medication as you pack and get ready for your trip.

18. Purchase Cabin Door Decorations

While this is completely optional, many cruisers enjoy decorating their cruise cabin door for their vacation.

Whether you go with a theme or keep it simple with a few dollar store items , collecting a few magnets or other cabin decorations is something to plan in advance.

19. Last Minute Home Organization

Make sure to keep a list of the last minute home things that you need to do before you go on your cruise holiday. 

Some things you’ll want to do include: notifying the alarm company that you’ll be traveling, putting a hold on the mail, setting up an away message on your work email, cleaning out your fridge, emptying your garbage bin in your kitchen, making your bed with clean sheets for when you arrive back home.

20. Check the Weather Forecast

About a week before your cruise, make sure to do a last minute weather check. It’s a good idea to know if the weather may unseasonably cold, hot or rainy and adjust the clothing you packed if need be. 

Always remember to pack a sweater or warmer outfit just in case, even on Caribbean cruises . Having an umbrella or poncho is a good idea as well.

Three Widget Sizes

Choose from three widget sizes - small, medium and large.

Small Widgets show your ship name and how many days left to sailaway.

Medium Sized Widget

Medium Widgets show your ship name, sail date, and how many days left to sailaway.

Large Sized Widget

Large Widgets show the same information as the medium, but also includes a handy packing list. If you want the ability to check off and edit items, then check out the packing list widget .

• Download the Cruise Picker app
• Go to your homescreen (that has some empty space) and long press on empty space. Your app icons will wiggle and a "+" button will appear on the upper left. Tap the "+" button.

• Type 'cruisepicker' into search
• Pick a widget to install

• Tap the 'Done' button. The defaul widget will be installed on your homescreen. Now lets customize it for your cruise.
• Long press on the actual widget. A menu will pop up. Tap on 'Edit Widget'. Note, tapping the widget will open the app. You want to long press (not tap).

• The widget will flip around. Tap the blue cruise line and ship buttons to select your line and ship.

• Add a sail date. Important: the date has to be in the MM/DD/YY format . For example if your sail date is July 21st, 2022, enter '7/21/22'. Note: If you happen to be in Canada, then the date format should be YYYY-MM-DD (2022-07-21).

• Choose a background image. Select from 10 hand selected images (including some fun cruise memes:)), or simply choose no image. After selecting, tap anywhere outside the widget. And, you're done!

Repeat the above steps to add as many widgets as you want!

How to Add Text and Share your Cruise Countdown

• Tap on any of your countdown widgets.

• Tap on the 'Add Text' button.

• Type in any text you want (including emojis!), and tap the 'Add' button. You will have the option to Edit or delete this text.

• You can tap 'Edit Text' or 'Delete' to make changes. Choose your background image and Tap the 'Share countdown' button.

• Here is the final image. You can either save to your camera roll or share your countdown on: iMessage, WhatsApp, etc.

Thirty Day Countdown to Your Cruise

We can’t be more excited for you. Really. We know what it’s like. If you are here then this means you have an amazing cruise adventure right around the corner. Our goal is to have you not only ready but stress-free before you sail. How often are you so stressed before you travel that you need not just one cruise, but two to feel better? Ok, the two cruise part is not so bad. But the stress is.

First, we walk you through 90 days and 60 days before your cruise. And then we take you one day at a time through the most important 30 day countdown to your cruise. You will get tips on everything from packing to getting your documents ready to board your fabulous ship. We will give you last minute questions to ask your Travel Agent and things to research before you go. Over the 30 days leading up to your cruise, we want you to get things done methodically and easily. Doesn’t that sound sane?

Disney Cruise Line Navigator App (Both iOS + Google Play) A very simple way to countdown to your upcoming Disney Cruise is to download the Disney Cruise Line Navigator App ahead of time.

First, you’re going to need to download it before your voyage anyways…so just do it early and use it as your Disney Cruise countdown app!

One of the cutest features is the built-in countdown timer.

Note: you have to have an active reservation in order to see the Disney countdown timer in the app.

On the site DisneyParks.Disney.Go.com , you will find a plethora of information, as well as a DIY printable vacation counter. 

There are printable numbers that you and your child can cut out.  It would be a good idea to laminate the numbers so they are not torn, as I am sure your child will want to move the numbers every day to indicate you are another day closer to your vacation departure.  I would suggest using two-sided tape and sticking the numbers to your fridge or somewhere easily accessible to your child.

While younger kids may not have access to technology that older children have, they will certainly want a visual reminder to the upcoming excitement of their Disney vacation. 

This Disneyland Calendar would be perfect in their room, the kitchen, or in any room where the family spends time. Made from wood-like material and you could use it for future Disney family vacations. 

Another item you can purchase online from an artisan is this Days Until Disney sign.

Use a piece of white chalk to mark the days on Mickey’s head to indicate how many days are left until your Disney Vacation.  Each child could take turns writing down the number of days left until departure.

If you are planning a trip to Aulani, you may want to consider this idea for your Disney Aulani countdown from All For the Memories.

This is a great idea because you can easily wipe off the numbers each day and write in a new number; just make sure you don’t use a permanent marker when you write your numbers!

Princess is launching an all-inclusive, 4-month, around-the-world cruise for $20,000— see what it'll be like

• Princess Cruises announced a 114-day  world cruise to 52 destinations in 2026, starting at $20,000 per person. 
• Guests who book early would get a free, all-inclusive package, a first for Princess' global itineraries.
• Extended and all-inclusive cruises have emerged as big trends in the vacation industry.

Princess Cruise's new around-the-world voyage will hit two vacation trends in one itinerary.

In January 2026, the company says its Coral Princess will embark on a 114-day cruise to 52 ports in 28 countries and six continents — more destinations than any of its previous global sailings .

It's the Carnival Corp brand's latest appeal to the extended cruising trend . But it's not the only fad this four-month vacation is targeting.

The sailing, which starts at $20,000 per person, also marks the first time Princess is offering a complimentary all-inclusive package as a way to entice early bookings.

Ultra-long and all-inclusive cruises have emerged as big trends in the industry.

Regent Seven Seas, Azamara, and Oceania's 2024 around-the-world cruises all sold out before departing in January. The former was fully booked within three hours, while every cabin on the latter was called for in 30 minutes.

Besides being high-end, these three companies share one commonality: some level of all-inclusiveness , as is common with premium cruise lines.

Mass-market cruise companies rarely go the all-inclusive route.

Princess, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian are generally beloved for their affordability.

But if you want to experience all their ships have to offer, be prepared to face a list of up-charged amenities like pay-to-play rides and specialty restaurants . After all, there's a reason their base fares are much cheaper than their increasingly popular ultra-luxury, all-inclusive counterparts.

But Princess has been increasingly vying for a slice of the luxury cruiser pie.

The cruise line says guests who book its 2026 world cruise early (that is, by the end of October) will receive its most inclusive Princess Premier package for free. The perk — launched two years ago — covers amenities that typically have a fee, like WiFi, premium drinks, some specialty restaurants, and workout classes.

Travelers who reserve one of the ship's high-end cabins by the same deadline would also receive complimentary airport transfers and airfare, services normally exclusively offered by luxury cruise lines .

The itinerary would have two roundtrip embarkation options: Fort. Lauderdale, Florida, on January 5, 2026, or Los Angeles 16 days later.

From there, the 2,000-guest Coral Princess would sail more than 35,000 nautical miles to ports in North America, the Pacific Islands, New Zealand and Australia, Asia, the Mediterranean, Europe, and Central and South America.

It wouldn't be Princess' longest voyage — that title goes to its 116-day world cruise in 2025 — but it would be one of its most destination-heavy.

While two days longer, next year's around-the-world cruise would hit six fewer ports and four fewer countries than its 2026 counterpart.

According to the itinerary, about half of the 2026 voyage consists of sea days.

That's a lot of time on the water with no land in sight. Luckily, travelers can keep themselves entertained by attending lectures and programs related to the destinations, leisuring around the adult-only lounge, or taking a dip in Coral Princess' four pools.

The 21-year-old ship also has 10 places to grab a bite, although the Italian and steakhouse restaurants are considered specialty. Premier is the cruise line's most inclusive package, but it only includes 16 free dinners at these upcharge restaurants, paced once a week.

Princess is still a mass-market cruise line, after all.

The company has been increasingly dangling its inclusive package as a big perk.

The company says its two-month-old Sun Princess will debut in the US in October with its first-ever Sanctuary Collection . Travelers who splurge on these expensive and luxurious accommodations would be rewarded with two major benefits: a private lounge and Princess Premier.

Princess Cruises Announces Revised 2025 World Cruise Itineraries

SANTA CLARITA, Calif., (April 30, 2024)  – Given the ongoing situation in the Red Sea and surrounding area and following extensive consultation with global security experts and government authorities, Princess Cruises is revising the itineraries for its two 2025 World Cruises, which will no longer visit the Middle East or Asia, and now instead, will offer new port stops in Africa and Europe.   

“A Princess World Cruise is truly the voyage of a lifetime and after careful consideration with guidance from global security experts and government authorities, we know our guests will understand and appreciate the change to our upcoming 2025 itineraries to avoid certain areas,” said Terry Thornton, chief commercial officer of Princess Cruises. “These global events beyond our control have necessitated these reroutings but we are pleased to continue to ensure these world cruises retain destination-rich itineraries with incredible stops along the west Africa coast and the Mediterranean.” 

Island Princess World Cruise 

Sailing from North America on Island Princess, the 116-day World Cruise offers two roundtrip options with departures from both Ft. Lauderdale, embarking January 5, 2025, and Los Angeles on January 20, 2025, and ends in Los Angeles on May 17, 2025. This destination dreamers delight will traverse over 36,700 nautical miles, visiting 46 destinations in 24 countries and six continents. The voyage includes visits to historic Bar, Montenegro and Taranto, Italy, along with inaugural World Cruise calls to the idyllic Greek Island of Patmos and to Volos – for the Monasteries of Meteora.  

The revised World Cruise itinerary, from February 16-April 9, departs Sydney and will travel to Melbourne and Perth, then on to South Africa. From there, the cruise resumes the scheduled itinerary starting in Valletta, Malta on April 9.  

Following is the amended portion of the voyage:  

Those guests scheduled to originally depart or join the cruise from Dubai on March 14, 2025, will now embark or disembark four days earlier on March 9, in Cape Town, South Africa. Booked guests disembarking in Cape Town will be refunded the amount equivalent to four days of the cruise fare and those joining earlier will not incur an added cost to their cruise fare. All these guests will also receive a $300 onboard credit as a gesture of good will.  

Crown Princess World Cruise 

Departing from Down Under, Crown Princess - the largest ship to ever host a World Cruise - is scheduled to depart Auckland May 31, 2025; and Sydney June 4, 2025; and sail on a 113-day adventure visiting 42 destinations in 22 countries, across five continents.
