Essay on A Visit to My Grandmother’s House

Every summer vacation, my parents and I go to visit my grandmother. This time too we went to stay with her for a week.

My grandmother stays in a small town near Berlin.

Her house is very beautiful and it is located in the middle of the town. The house has four bedrooms and a huge kitchen. This time when we went to meet her, I found her lovely garden full of beautiful flowers.

She was very happy to see us. We stayed with her for a week, and each day she cooked something special for us. She also baked my favorite chocolate cookies.

The weather there was very pleasant. So one day we all went for a picnic to the lakeside.

At night I slept in my grandmother’s room, and she told me lovely stories. She not only showed me my father’s pictures when he was young but also narrated many funny incidents about my father and his friends.

She gifted me two pullovers which she had knitted herself.

I always feel happy to be with her. I wish I could stay with her for a little longer. I left her house with a heavy heart. She too felt sad about us going back. We promised to visit her soon.

Our history

Grandma's Village Inc. was established as a nonprofit 501(c) (3) in 2021 after our founder had the difficult task of caring for her grandmother and realized there was a need for families of seniors that were transitioning from living on their own to living with family or in a long term facility setting. 

In the African American Culture, grandmother's have been the "village" to communities and families for as long as I can remember. They were the pillars of the neighborhoods, looking out for the children and making sure we were all accountable, safe, respectful, fed and had a strong foundation. As time has gone on we now need to be the village for them and service them with meeting their needs.  This becomes difficult since most of us have children, spouses and full time jobs. The task became challenging trying to balance it all and that's where it was found there was a need for services, assistance and companionship.  

Our founder Kim, the only child was left to be the sole provider of her grandma once her father passed in 2014. At that time, her grandma Mrs. Flo was living on her own but had loss 75% of her sight due to glaucoma and cataracts.  She eventually reached a point where living alone wasn't a viable option. Our founder tried to honor her wishes by allowing her to stay in her apartment and remain as independent as possible. This meant that she would now begin going by her grandmother's home most mornings before work to make sure she had breakfast, a bath and was dressed and then head to work. At the end of the day, she would stop by and do the same for dinner, she did this for the better of 5 years and the latter years being more involved than the previous. 

She tried to find assistance from DHS, and third party companies but due to her income, having access to a caregiver was not an option and she wasn't eligible for any free or low cost services provided by the state.

Everyday that Kim visited her grandmother she would meet other seniors who were also were in need of service such as errands to run or just a kind word. She knew then something had to change. 

Grandma Flora fell ill and was diagnosed with dementia that progressed very fast and she was no longer able to stay home alone for safety reasons and was placed in a long term living facility.  I think if there were more services that offered companionship or just services to assist with the daily living needs she could have stayed comfortably in her home.  Mrs. Flo is thriving and doing well , she is currently 93 years old, and still feisty as ever.

There are so many things that our founder learned along the way and so much more that she wants to share with other families to make transitions such as this much smoother and less frustrating.

Our mission

The Mission of Grandma's Village Inc. is to fill the gap and assist senior citizens and their families affected by aging, illness or financial hardship. We want to help seniors maintain their independence and keep them in their homes as long as possible.

Grandma prisbrey’s bottle village.

Beginning construction in 1956 at age 60, and working until 1981, Tressa “Grandma” Prisbrey transformed her one-third acre rural lot into Bottle Village, a fantasyland of shrines, wishing wells, walkways, fountains, follies, plus 15 structures to house her collections – all made from found objects. The name “Bottle Village” comes from the structures themselves – made of tens of thousands of discarded bottles. Bottle Village was a hobby Grandma enjoyed, and enjoyed sharing with anyone who would pay a quarter for a walking tour. Now this art piece is registered as a state treasure, as California Historical Landmark # 939.

22 May 1972 The following is a brief extract from The History of the World: Sixth Edition by J.M. Roberts and O.A. Westad.

In October 1971 the UN General Assembly had recognized the People’s Republic as the only legitimate representative of China in the United Nations, and expelled the representative of Taiwan. This was not an outcome the United States had anticipated until the crucial vote was taken. The following February, there took place a visit by Nixon to China that was the first visit ever made by an American president to mainland Asia, and one he described as an attempt to bridge ‘sixteen thousand miles and twenty-two years of hostility.’

When Nixon followed his Chinese trip by becoming also the first American president to visit Moscow (in May 1972), and this was followed by an interim agreement on arms limitation – the first of its kind – it seemed that another important change had come about. The stark, polarized simplicities of the Cold War were blurring, however doubtful the future might be.

J. M. Roberts CBE died in 2003. He was Warden at Merton College, Oxford University, until his retirement and is widely considered one of the leading historians of his era. He is also renowned as the author and presenter of the BBC TV series ‘The Triumph of the West’ (1985). Odd Arne Westad edited the sixth edition of The History of the World . He is Professor of International History at the London School of Economics. He has published fifteen books on modern and contemporary international history, among them ‘The Global Cold War,’ which won the Bancroft Prize.
