Longwood Debut Grammy Award nominated folk musician Andrew Bird joins world-renowned Afro-pop duo Amadou & Mariam in a lively performance exploring diverse genres.

With 17 albums to his name, Andrew Bird leads this lively performance of diverse genres. As a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and whistler, Bird has performed around the globe, acted in Fargo , scored the FX series Baskets , served as a TED Talk presenter, and many other accomplishments.

Known as the most famous ambassadors for Malian and African music, Amadou & Mariam have brought African music to the charts and the dance floor, playing Coachella to Glastonbury and opening for Coldplay to the Scissor Sisters.

More about Andrew Bird Andrew Bird picked up his first violin at the age of four and spent his formative years soaking up classical repertoire completely by ear. He has recorded with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, appeared as “Dr. Stringz” on Jack’s Big Music Show , and headlined concerts at Carnegie Hall, Sydney Opera House, Walt Disney Concert Hall, and festivals worldwide.

Bird performed as the Whistling Caruso in Disney’s The Muppets movie, scored the FX series Baskets , and collaborated with inventor Ian Schneller on Sonic Arboretum, an installation that exhibited at New York’s Guggenheim Museum, Boston’s ICA, and the MCA Chicago. Bird has been a featured TED Talks presenter, a New Yorker Festival guest, and an op-ed contributor for The New York Times .

More recently, Bird released a series of site-specific improvisational short films and recordings called Echolocations , recorded in remote and acoustically interesting spaces: a Utah canyon, an abandoned seaside bunker, the middle of the Los Angeles River, and a reverberant stone-covered aqueduct in Lisbon. Additionally, Bird hosts an ongoing series of live-streamed performances called Live from the Great Room , putting the creative process on display for fans as he collaborates and converses with friends in a candid, intimate setting.

Shortly after receiving his 2020 Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album with My Finest Work Yet , Bird made his professional acting debut in the cast of Fargo . In March 2021, Bird released his latest project, These 13 , an album entirely co-written and recorded with his longtime friend and former Squirrel Nut Zippers collaborator Jimbo Mathus. Captured live on tape, just the two of them playing and singing from opposite sides of a microphone, These 13 marked the first set of new music that Bird and Mathus created together in more than 20 years.

More about Amadou & Mariam For the past 40-odd years, Amadou & Mariam have managed to joyfully combine their love story with a musical career. Amadou & Mariam have collaborated with many different people and worked with producers that seem far removed from their universe, like Damon Albarn of Blur and Manu Chao. They have collaborated with artists who are building tomorrow’s pop music, including Santigold, TV On The Radio, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and have had their tracks remixed by Yuksek, Vitalic, Henrik Schwarz, Miike Snow, and Ashley Beedle, leading the songs to the dance floor and underlining their intrinsically danceable quality.

By introducing to the world the richness and subtleties of African music, the duo has brought African music to the charts and to the dance floor. They’ve inspired many artists to mix Afro and electro sounds, such as MHD, DJ Mujava, Awesome Tapes From Africa, Four Tet, and Jamie xx.    At the request of the artist, $1 from each ticket sold will be donated to the Hope This Helps Fund .

Amadou & Mariam Announce U.S. Tour in Support of New Live Album 'ECLIPSE'

Amadou & Mariam are beloved West African music ambassadors who break through musical and cultural barriers while inspiring millions of fans along the way.

Superstars of Malian music with an illustrious career spanning more than 40 years, Amadou & Mariam will headline venerable U.S. venues such as Miner Auditorium @ SF JAZZ, Le Poisson Rouge (NYC), 9:30 Club (Wash. DC), and others from March 14 - 25, 2023. The prolific blind African duo will tour in support of their new live album, Eclipse (Because Music, Release Date: December 9, 2022), which marks the 10th Anniversary of their legendary concert performed completely in the dark (for musicians and audiences alike) at the Manchester International Festival (2012). For a full list of forthcoming Amadou & Mariam tour dates, please see below and visit: amadou-mariam.com .

Amadou & Mariam are beloved West African music ambassadors who break through musical and cultural barriers while inspiring millions of fans along the way. 2021/2022 was an ambitious two years for two of Africa's most revered artists. While the duo has been working in the studio on their much-anticipated ninth full-length album (due out in autumn 2023), Amadou & Mariam toured with gospel royalty The Blind Boys of Alabama and cut two dance crossover singles. Mainstays on dance floors around the world, their collaboration with Sofi Tukker on the track and music video for "Mon Cheri" (from Red Hot + Free, July 2021) now has over 1 million views on YouTube . A deep house remix of "Sete" (March 2022) by Blond:ish and Haitian producer Francis Mercier revisits one of the earliest hits from Amadou & Mariam's acclaimed recording catalog ( view music video on YouTube ) -- "Sete" ranked #8 on Billboard's "Best Dance Songs of 2022."

Following eight critically-acclaimed studio albums, including the gold and platinum certified Dimanche à Bamako (Sunday in Bamako) produced by Manu Chao and the GRAMMY Award-nominated, Welcome to Mali featuring Damon Albarn and Sabali, Amadou & Mariam released Eclipse to bring their fans into a fully immersive experience unlike any other. During the taped concert at Manchester International Festival (2012), the crowd settled in and the lights went dark allowing listeners to hear and feel the music similar to Amadou & Mariam. Aromas and sounds filled the air to create an elevated sensory journey into their incredible life story. The English version of Eclipse is narrated by actor Isaach de Bankolé (Casino Royale, Black Panther I & II, Godfather of Harlem, and an array of films by Jim Jarmusch ). To listen, please click HERE .

"There are always a lot of questions on how we live and how we feel about music," says Amadou & Mariam. "Eclipse is a way for us to be on an equal footing with the audience so that they can understand our lives. In the dark, we listen in a new way. Beyond our vision, we can imagine, we can pretend, we can take in the space around us through our hearing, and therefore, get a real sense of what's our experience. Maybe by not seeing, we can feel the music in a different way."

Amadou & Mariam preserve a legacy of being one of the most heartwarming stories of modern music -- a love affair that propelled two grandparents from Mali into topping charts across the globe and raising awareness of the challenges of living in one of the world's poorest countries. Amadou & Mariam have performed at the world's most lauded music festivals, from Coachella to Glastonbury; they've opened for U2, Coldplay, and the Scissor Sisters; recorded with Damon Albarn of Blur, Santigold, TV On The Radio, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs; and DJs/producers Jamie XX, Four Tet, and Mike Snow have all either remixed their songs or mixed Afro and electrico sounds based on their love of Amadou & Mariam's music.

There's not much that Amadou & Mariam haven't done in the music industry. Even with all of their career accolades though, one thing remains true: their love for one another and that of their craft will always be of the highest order on their mission to bring African music to the masses.

Amadou & Mariam's upcoming U.S. tour includes live performances by an award-winning quartet featuring many of their classic and latest hits, as well as songs from Eclipse.

Breaking News

Music | debate takeaways: trump confident, even when wrong, biden halting, even with facts on his side, music | malian music stars amadou & mariam bring ‘eclipse’ tour to bay area.

Malian musicians Amadou and Mariam will showcase their new album "Eclipse" with a string of shows at SFJAZZ and Kuumbwa Jazz Center March 16-20.

For the superstar Malian couple Amadou and Mariam, a catalog of incantatory, relentlessly grooving tunes is fuel enough to turn just about any assembly into a writhing celebration. But a decade ago they were looking for a different kind of communion, and set about to create a concert experience that invited audiences into their world.

Guitarist and vocalist Amadou Bagayoko and vocalist Mariam Doumbia return to the Bay Area on a tour marking the release of their new live album, “Eclipse,” a project inspired by the 10th anniversary of the much-discussed Manchester International Festival concert where they performed completely in the dark. They won’t be replicating the black-out conditions during their four-night run at the SFJAZZ Center March 16-19 or at Kuumbwa Jazz’s March 20 Rio Theatre show, at least not for the audience.

Bagayoko lost his vision at 16, while Doumbia became blind at age 5 due to untreated measles, and they first met in Bamako at Mali’s Institute for the Young Blind, performing in the school’s Eclipse Orchestra. They trace the concept for the Manchester Eclipse concert back to their days at the institute “where the Eclipse Orchestra has both blind and seeing people,” Bagayoko said in a recent phone call, speaking in French.

It took years to put the idea into action and when they were finally able to perform in complete darkness they found the experience strangely “calm,” Bagayoko said. With the theater completely dark, “people had to stay seated. It was calmer, with much less movement. But people could concentrate on how the vibrations of the music made them feel.”

An interesting experiment, it has not proven feasible to recreate the conditions on the road. “Things have changed,” he said. “There are a lot of challenges to get a proper tour with all the elements to get a dark room, and then there’s security and safety concerns. Production-wise it’s way easier to present a regular concert.”

For Amadou and Mariam, a regular concert is a scorching affair. They’re touring with their longtime five-piece band featuring bassist Yao Dembele, keyboardist Charles-Frederik Avot, and Egyptian-born drummer Yvo Abadi, co-founder of the French world metal combo Ethnician. Bagayoko’s style combines the stripped down approach of Malian guitar heroes like Boubacar Traoré and Ali Farka Touré with “tons of different inspirations,” he said, including Jimi Hendrix, John Lee Hooker, and Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour.

More than Malian musical ambassadors, Amadou and Mariam are the go-to act for the highest profile assignments, like recording the official anthem for the 2006 FIFA World Cup or performing at the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize ceremony. Eager to absorb new sounds and influences, they recorded half of their 2012 album “Folila” in New York City, where they collaborated with acts like rapper Theophilus London, Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist Nick Zinner, the Afrobeat horns of Antibalas, and TV on the Radio.

The couple’s breakthrough collaboration took place two decades ago, when the polyglot Latin music star Manu Chao heard their music on the radio in Paris and approached them about working together. He ended up producing and singing on their 2004 album “Dimanche à Bamako,” which went on to earn a Grammy nomination and win the BBC Award for best world music album.

The project made them stars in Europe, but more importantly it transformed the way they thought about creating and presenting their music. They’ve collaborated with dozens of artists from across Europe, Africa and North America, “but what makes Manu Chao very important is he changed our way of composing and performing,” Bagayoko said.

The synergy that powers Amadou and Mariam flows from the yin/yang nature of their stylistic palettes and divergent approaches to composing. They both write songs, sometimes together and sometimes apart. She’s a traditionalist who looks to ancient Malian forms, while he keeps an ear out for new sounds.

“It hasn’t changed since the beginning, since we got together,” he said. “We listen to very different music. I always have the radio on, and this always brings in something different.”
