Amtrak Ticket Cancellation Policy Guide [2020]

It’s always important to have a good understanding about the cancellation policies for your travels — whether they be on a plane, train, or any other form of travel that you can conjure up. The Amtrak cancellation policy is straightforward and easy to understand in some cases but in others, it’s much more difficult to ascertain the details.

In this article, I’ll tell you everything you need to know about the Amtrak cancellation policy including details about the fees and ways to get around those fees. By the way, if you want to learn more about the value of Amtrak points click here!

Table of Contents

What is the Amtrak cancellation policy?

The Amtrak cancellation policy that applies to your booking will depend on the type of fare that you purchased (much like how airfare works). Amtrak offers five different types of fares that you can purchase which include:

  • Saver Fares
  • Value Fares
  • Flexible Fares
  • Business Fares
  • Premium Fares

Below, I’ll go into detail about these different types of tickets and what their cancellation policy entails. However, you can generally expect to pay a 25% cancellation fee if you cancel your ticket 24 hours or later after your purchase and a 10% penalty for reward tickets.

Saver Fares cancellation policy

Saver fares allow you to get a full refund if you cancel within 24 hours of purchase (this is similar to how airlines offer you a full refund within 24 hours of booking). However, Saver fares are non-refundable 24 hours or more after booking. The good news is that you can still qualify for an eVoucher.

If you cancel your ticket within 24 hours of purchase, your eVoucher will be for the full value of your ticket. But if you wait longer than 24 hours after booking, you’ll be hit with a 25% cancellation fee, which will essentially leave you with a 75% credit.

It’s really important to note that if you fail to cancel and don’t show up, the ticket is forfeited and you will not get funds that can be applied toward future travel.

Value Fares cancellation policy

Value fares allow you to get a full refund if you cancel eight days or more before departure. Otherwise, there will be a 25% cancellation fee charged if cancelled less than eight days prior to departure. (Unreserved tickets incur 25% fee an hour or more after purchase.)

if you cancel your ticket 8 days or more before departure, your eVoucher will be for the full value of your ticket. But if you cancelled less than 8 days prior to departure, you’ll be hit with a 25% cancellation fee, which will essentially leave you with a 75% credit.

Unreserved tickets incur 25% fee an hour or more after purchase.

Value fares have the same no-show policy that Saver Fares have.

Flexible Fares cancellation policy

If you book a flexible fare you can get a full refund with no fees and no questions asked . Notice that you can even request a full refund after the train has left the station — this makes flexible fares the best fares when it comes to getting refunds. These flexible fares could include the following classes:

  • Unreserved Coach
  • Reserved Coach
  • Acela Express Business Class

If you’d like an eVoucher instead, you can get that issued to you for 100% of the purchase price.

Business Fares cancellation policy

Business Fares also offer a full refund with no fees and no questions asked if cancelled before departure. These include Non-Acela Business Class. Business fares have the same no-show policy that Saver Fares have.

Premium Fares cancellation policy

Premium Fares also offer a full refund with no fees and no questions asked if cancelled before departure. These include Acela Express and First Class. These fares have the same no-show policy that Saver Fares have.

If you booked a sleeper accommodation then you’ll have a different refund policy. Those will offer you a full refund if cancelled within 24 hours of your purchase. If you wait until after 24 hours but more than 15 days prior to departure a 25% cancellation fee will be in effect. If you cancel less than 15 days prior to departure, you won’t get a refund.

Reward tickets (points) cancellation policy

If you’re wondering about reward or points tickets, the outcome all depends on the type of reward ticket in question.

One-Way, Round-Trip, or Multi-Segment Reward Travel

If you have booked a One-Way, Round-Trip, or Multi-Segment Reward Travel there will be a 10% point penalty assessed for any refund.

If you are canceling a non-sleeper ticket within 24 hours prior to departure, or a sleeper ticket within 14 days prior to departure, there will also be an additional “close-in” penalty of 10%. Keep in mind that this close-in fee will be waived for Select Executive members.

If you are just making a modification to your reward ticket then you will have to cover the points difference and you will also get hit with a 10% points penalty.

If you are modifying a non-sleeper ticket within 24 hours prior to departure, or a sleeper ticket within 14 days prior to departure, an additional “close-in” penalty of 10% of the points redeemed will be collected. Once again, this is waived for Select Executive members.

Multi-Ride (Six-Ride, Ten-Ride) Reward Tickets

For cancellations on Multi-Ride (Six-Ride, Ten-Ride) Reward Tickets, your points will be refunded minus a 10% points penalty if unused and unexpired. It’s important to note that points are non-refundable if the first trip is used or if the ticket is expired.

Modifications: Before first ride, a full exchange in point value will be issued without penalty. No exchange in point value after first ride or after expiry—whichever comes first.

Monthly Pass Reward Travel

For cancellations on Monthly Pass Reward Travel, your points will be refunded minus a 10% point penalty prior to first day of valid month. Redemptions are non-refundable on or after the first day of the valid month.

Modifications: You can get a full exchange in point value prior to the valid month, but there is no exchange in point value on or after the first day of the valid month.

Multi-Ride Tickets

If you have purchased multi-ride tickets, then your cancellation policy will depend on the type of tickets you purchased.

For monthly tickets, if you request the refund before the valid month you can get a full refund, minus a 25% fee (so essentially a 75% refund).

If you cancel day 1 through day 10 of the valid month, then you’ll only be able to get a 50% refund, less a 25% cancellation fee. And finally, if you wait until on or after day 11 of valid month, you will not get a refund at all.

If you purchased a Ten-Ride and Six-Ride Ticket then your refund amount depends on the number of rides you have taken (or haven’t taken). If you have NOT taken any rides then you can get a full refund, less a 25% cancellation fee. But if you have taken one or more rides then your ticket is not refundable.

Gift card refunds

If you paid for your booking by using a gift card and cancel that booking, you should be given a credit in the form of an eVoucher.

Boarding the wrong train

You might be wondering what happens if you do something like exiting at the wrong train station. In that case, you might wish to get refunded for the amount that you did not actually travel. However, that’s not how this generally works and you won’t be able to receive a refund for that.

If you end up downgrading you might be able to get a refund and you should inquire about obtaining a Refund Authorization Form from the conductor. Just note “to receive a fare adjustment the customer must change the reservation before the train departs the original boarding station of that train.”

How to get a refund with Amtrak

There are four different ways you can request a refund with Amtrak. The easiest method is to go process it online, which can be done here (you may also do it over the Amtrak Mobile App).

Another method is to call the customer service phone number at: 1-800-USA-RAIL (1-800-872-7245).

If you’re at or near an Amtrak Station, you can process your refund there. And finally, you may make a request for a cash refund by mailing in your request to the following address:

Amtrak Refunds Box 70 30th St. Station 2955 Market Street Philadelphia, PA 19104-2898

Note that if paper value tickets were printed, with the exception of eTickets, they must be returned for any refund.

Additional things to note

Amtrak tickets become non-refundable, not valid for carriage and have no exchange value, after one year from the date payment was made for that ticket. Similarly, an eVoucher or other credit is valid for one year from date of issue.

There is a minimum cancellation fee of $5 and a maximum cancellation fee of $250 (the maximum does not apply to monthly or multi-ride tickets.

As you can tell, the Amtrak cancellation policy is quite complex given the nature of all of the different types of fares offered. Unless you’re booking a flexible fare, you really need to pay close attention to the type of ticket that you’ve purchases so that you don’t end up screwing yourself over in the future.

Perhaps I missed it, but what is the change policy if I want to change just one way on a round trip auto train bedroom fare? Do I have to change the whole trip and pay the higher rate now for the entire trip?

I booked San Francisco-Chicago on the California Zephyr about eight months ago. Was hugely looking forward to the trip but around the 3rd of March, Amtrak sent me an email saying it was cancelled.

The email had a link to a web page via which I could request a refund. Did that, and there's been no response save for a form email that claims they respond to queries seven days a week. (No, they don't.)

Since then I've followed up with further emails but of course there's been nothing from Amtrak. I understand they have problems with staffing, but once someone has requested a refund and the trip has been cancelled by Amtrak, why should it take so long to get so much as a response, let alone an actual refund?

I'm in a time zone 9-12 hours ahead of the US and don't want to make an expensive international call to try to get in touch with a live human because I probably will just be on hold for hours on end.

There's an option to "cancel trip" on the Manage booking page on Amtrak (why? the trip has already been cancelled by Amtrak) which I'm afraid to click because it'll probably give Amtrak some reason to delay the refund further, or not process it at all, since it'll look like the trip is being cancelled by the passenger.

Any ideas on what to do? Thanks in advance.

evilpoodle;

When is your trip planned for?

Did the refund page request your credit card information?

Best Regards

Have cancelled several Amtrqak trips. Never been asked for my credit card, as the refund goes back directly onto the credit card used.

That's what I was thinking as well, yvr1.

I have a feeling that evilpoodle may have been a victim of a scam.

There is a way to speak directly to the refund department and not to a reservation agent. You have to speak directly to the refund department. I was dealing with an agent and getting no where on a refund, this was regarding the time it takes to get a refund.

I called back and the next agent suggested I speak directly to the refund department, I was transfered to them. Everything was straightend out in about two minutes.

@RescueTeam It was booked for April 18 (SF departure). From what I can see online, Amtrak does seem to have cancelled many frequencies for the California Zephyr around that date.

No, the refund form did not ask for a credit card or other method of payment, just asked for train details, booking reference etc.

Doesn't look like a scam. The email came from http://DoNotReplyATacn.amtrak.com and looks authentic - though I know that can be hard to determine at times.

@yvr1 do you have a number for the refunds department by any chance? Of course, they don't list it online. And the email from them about the cancellation provided the same number 877-231-9448 for rebooking and refunds.

They also have a number for international customers - though it seems to be a US number, I assume it's just staffed during non US peak hours. Or not. Fun times.

Thanks everyone.

You're welcome!

Looking at Amtrak's website, I see that there is service departing at 8:50 pm/20:50, but is segmented.

1) Bus to Emeryville

2) Train to Portland OR then a 1-hour layover

3) Train from Portland to Chicago IL

I would suggest contacting Amtrak and getting clarification.

The California Zephyr, which was the train I booked, isn't running that day, though. I don't want to do the SF-Portland-Chicago route (it was mostly about the views through the midwest for me, and spending two days on a train, rather than with a stopover).

I have been trying to contact Amtrak, yes, but they don't believe in answering email and it looks like I have no choice but to fork out for an expensive international call (or several).

@evilpoodle No, I do not have a number for the refunds department. I was transfered to the refunds department by the reservation agent I had been speaking to.

As the omicron variant rises, here’s what to do if you need to cancel your trip

Update : Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

Cases of the highly transmissible COVID-19 delta variant started rapidly rising around the world this summer. And just in time for the busy holiday travel season, we're also seeing the rise of the omicron variant, which may be more contagious than others and contains several spike protein mutations that may make it less responsive to COVID-19 vaccines.

Earlier this fall, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated its mask guidance and is recommending people in high-risk areas wear masks indoors again — vaccinated or not. Some states, local governments and even theme parks are again requiring it.

Luckily, many travel providers are letting you change or cancel your bookings for free, including ones that originally let their COVID-19-related flexible travel waivers expire. Even better, in most cases, these changes and cancellations can be made online. Some airlines that had reintroduced some more restrictive 'Basic Economy' fares that aren't as flexible are adding some temporary waivers for those fares as pandemic-related cases spike up once again.

Things to keep in mind

Why you might want to wait to change or cancel your flight or cruise.

In most cases, when you voluntarily change or cancel a flight or cruise, you'll receive a credit for future use with the company — not a refund. However, if the company ends up canceling your flight or cruise or making a schedule change, then you are entitled to your money back. Airlines typically wait until the last minute to process flight cancellations, so it could pay for you to also wait until the last minute to make any changes.

You can cancel bookings made through travel portals

Travel portals such as American Express Travel , Chase Ultimate Rewards , Citi ThankYou Travel Center and Capital One Travel let you make changes to your bookings per the policies of the individual airline, hotel or car rental agency. If you're eligible for a refund, you'll typically be refunded in your original form of payment. This means that if you paid with points, you should be credited back with points. That said, data points have suggested this isn't always the case. Your best bet would be to call in before canceling and confirming how your refund will be issued before canceling.

Pay with a credit card that offers trip protection

Several of the top travel rewards credit cards come with travel insurance benefits, including trip cancellation and interruption protection . This can help you get your money back for nonrefundable travel expenses when you need to cancel a trip for a covered reason (though many pandemic-related reasons are excluded). Cards that offer trip cancellation and interruption benefits include the Chase Sapphire Reserve, Chase Sapphire Preferred Card and The Platinum Card® from American Express.

will amtrak refund tickets

But, things can go wrong from time to time. And unfortunately, your plans need to take a back burner. That’s life! When this happens, you might wonder, so, will Amtrak refund tickets?

That’s why it’s very helpful to know how to change (or cancel) Amtrak reservations. Fortunately, though, Amtrak offers a somewhat lenient modification and cancellation policy. It’s also fairly easy to do.

You just need to know how to do it right!

We’re here to help you out! We’ve laid down all you need to make last-minute changes to your Amtrak itinerary. This post also tackles how you can save more money and make the most out of your cancellation.

Let’s start!

COVID-19 Refund and Cancellation Implementations

Reservations booked before October 31st, 2022, will be free of change costs. Reservations made using points are included here as well.

Depending on the ticket booked, cancellation costs could still occur. Sign in to your Amtrak.com account and choose ‘Modify Trip’. From here, you can make changes to an existing reservation.

Your reservation may also be accessed from the Amtrak app’s home menu.

There may be a fare change with your updated itinerary. The change charge waiver does not occur when a recently paid ticket is rebooked at a lesser cost for the exact train, day, destination, and route.

Amtrak’s Refund and Cancellation Policy

Amtrak’s ticket cancellation and modification policies depend upon the kind of ticket you bought. This also plays a role in the amount of money that will be refunded to you.

All fares are subject to a number of rules and regulations . The specific rules for each sort of fare are detailed in the sections below:

You get a full refund if you cancel your purchased Amtrak ticket within the first 24 hours of purchasing.

Changes and Modifications

Amtrak will not charge you a change fee as long as you reschedule and modify within 24 hours of purchase.

No Show Policy

And if you want to reschedule your ticket, make sure to do it any time before departure. Unused Amtrak tickets will be deemed forfeited. Additionally, you cannot refund or exchange them after the planned departure time.

The following applies for Saver Fare tickets in Acela Business Class and Coach.

Saver Fares are non-refundable 24 hours upon purchasing or thereafter. You may, however, get a 75% eVoucher.

Saver Fee ticket modifications have a 25% fee when modified after 24 hours of purchase. Your change fee is waived if you are a Select Executive member.

Moreover, upgrade coupons, and passenger and promotional discounts are not applicable to Saver Fares.

If you cancel your trip at least 15 days before your scheduled departure date, you’ll get a full refund. If you cancel 14 days prior to your departure, there will be a 25% cancellation fee. There is also a 25% cancellation charge for unreserved services purchased within one hour of purchase.

Changes to value fare tickets are free. If you want to switch to a more expensive route, you’ll have to pay the difference in price.

Flexible Fare

The following applies for Flexible Fare tickets in Acela Business Class and Coach.

If you cancel your trip prior to departure, you’ll get a full refund in the original means of payment.

Changes to flexible fare tickets are free of charge. There will be an additional fee for changing a ticket’s itinerary to a more expensive one.

Business Fare

The following applies to non-Acela Business Fare tickets.

Tickets that are canceled prior to the planned departure time are 100% refundable.

Changes for Business fare tickets are free of charge. But you change to a new itinerary with a bigger price, the difference in charge should be paid.

Premium Fare

Acela first-class.

Canceled tickets are 100% refundable if you cancel before departure.

Modifications and changes are free of charge. However, higher-priced itineraries should be paid for.

Sleeper Accommodations

Premium sleeper tickers are entirely refundable, as long as you cancel 121 prior to departure. Cancellations made between 120 and 15 days prior to travel are subject to a cost of 25% charge.

Sleeper tickets are non-refundable once canceled 14 days before departure. However, it can be canceled for a 75% eVoucher.

Changes and modifications for sleeper tickets are free of charge. However, higher-priced itineraries should be paid for.

Refund Policy for Passengers With Sickness

You may have an exception for refunds and exchanges if you are sick. Amtrack may waive or change policies if you or any traveling passenger provides a doctor’s certificate.

If you have any questions concerning this exemption, please contact Amtrak.

How Can You Determine The Policy For Your Ticket

All the policies above apply depending on the total price paid for every trip. This also covers all continuous travel segments.

In short, change fees will still count as 25% of the overall ticket price, even if it involves multiple trains.

But what if your trips have different classes? In this case, the cancellation and change policies of the principal (or the most expensive) class apply to your whole trip.

Let’s say the first leg of your trip consists of a Value Fare coach seat. Then your second leg trip consists of a Premium Fare sleeper. In this case, the Premium Fare sleeper policies apply.

You can always check out your ticket and reservation on their website.

Ticket Expiration Policy

You cannot exchange and refund any Amtrak ticket after one year of purchase. Additionally, credits and Amtrak eVouchers are only valid for one year upon issuance.

Amtrak Reward Points and Cancellations Policy

Amtrak only gives out reward points at the end of the journey. That means you won’t get any credit for a ticket should you cancel it. Wondering when Amtrack points expire? Click here.

How To Change Your Ticket

There are three ways you can cancel and change your ticket.

Via Website

Select “Modify Trip” from the Amtrak website’s top-right menu. When a new window appears, enter the corresponding details.

Usually, the website asks for your email address and reservation number. You can find your reservation number at the top of your ticket.

Afterward, follow the on-screen instructions to make the desired alteration or cancellation.

You can also speak to a customer service representative for your cancellation or change concerns. Call +1 (800) 872-7245 to reach Amtrak.

Note and expect that you might be on hold for some time.

Via Station

You can additionally handle your adjustments and cancellations in person. This is great if you have an Amtrak office near you . Make sure to call or check their office hours.

How To Use Amtrak eVouchers

As stated above, some tickets entitle you to an eVoucher. Once you cancel your ticket, Amtrak will send you your eVoucher details via email. From here, your eVoucher is automatically stored on the system.

So, how or where can you use your Amtrak eVouchers? You can use these for booking new reservations.

Passengers may only use eVouchers issued in their own name, but they are also non-transferable.

Will Amtrak Refund My Ticket If I’m Late or Get Off Early?

What if you leave your trip early ? Or, what if you’re late for your trip? Can you still get a refund? No. Amtrak does not issue refunds for late passengers, or for passengers who decide to leave early.

Will Amtrak Refund Tickets If The Train Is Late or Cancelled?

Now, what if the Amtrak train is late?

  • Regulations from the government
  • Conditions relating to the weather, conflicts and riots, wars, economic sanctions, and other forms of unrest
  • Labor issues
  • Shortages in gas, labor, or facilities

However, if the delay is an Amtrack-caused error, then passengers are compensated with transportation or hotel accommodations.

Are you wondering more about why trains stop? Click here.

And if your train schedule gets canceled, you are entitled to a full refund. You can also have it rescheduled.

How Long Does It Take To Recieve Your Amtrak Refund?

These tips and information and undoubtedly useful. But, it’s always best to act as soon as possible to prevent any discrepancies.

The endless amenities and friendly, respectful staff also make one's trip memorable.

Many Amtrak trains successfully run across hundreds of tracks in the United States (most Amtrak trains offer incredibly beautiful routes , too), and there's also a rich history behind the company. Multiple packages are available for every type of passenger, depending on budget, accommodation choice, and other factors. Furthermore, passengers get extra legroom for a long journey compared to a car or air travel. The Amtrak also saves on fuel and protects one's personal vehicle from wear and tear if one uses it to travel. So, with that in mind, let's skim through some important things travelers should know about the trains, such as Amtrak train routes and prices, etc.

More Things To Know About Amtrak Trains For First Time Travelers

Everyone should be aware of a few things before embarking on their first Amtrak journey, regardless of the destination or length of the journey. This list has been updated with additional important information, including train routes, prices, schedules, destinations, and more to help travelers have a stress-free, relaxing, and enjoyable Amtrak journey.

The Amtrak App

The Amtrak app makes it simple for travelers to plan and reserve their trips, check Amtrak schedules and destinations, and receive real-time alerts for delays or changes. Users can access their e-tickets through the app, which provides information on Amtrak train routes and prices. Additionally, the app includes interactive maps that help passengers track the whereabouts of the train and get knowledge of the schedule. The Amtrak app has a user-friendly interface and convenient features, making train travel more simple, reliable, and enjoyable.

Expect Train Delays

Amtrak trains need to stop at some places to let large freight trains pass because they share the same tracks. It can result in unforeseen delays in travel times, especially on longer, cross-country routes. For instance, the California Zephyr from Chicago to Denver may need to stop before the Moffat Tunnel to allow a freight train to pass, delaying Amtrak schedules. Therefore, researching Amtrak schedules and destinations is beneficial before making travel plans.

Making A Pre-Departure Checklist Is Helpful

Passengers will require a number of items, including those necessary and desirable for a stress-free and memorable Amtrak trip. Some of these—like an ID—are necessary, while others are worthwhile for an enjoyable Amtrak journey.

Identification

Passengers must have a photo ID or passport with them.

Train Tickets

Passengers should have hard copies of their tickets or electronic copies of their tickets on hand.

Travel insurance

It's essential to protect oneself from unanticipated travel mishaps.

Passengers who will need to take any medication while traveling must bring it with them.

Other Essentials

Personal care items, snacks, beverages, books, and some forms of entertainment are desirable (but not necessary) for a comfortable trip, particularly on long Amtrak routes.

Stations Have Different Stopover Times

The train makes scheduled stops at various stations during a trip, and the stopover time varies depending on the type of station. If a station is a rest stop, the stopover time is comparatively longer than that of a passenger drop-off and pick-up location. Knowing if a specific stop is a designated rest stop where passengers are permitted to disembark is preferable for those who want to smoke because smoking is not permitted on the train or simply want to move around the station.

Reasonable Ticket Prices

Amtrak tickets are reasonably priced! The average price of a ticket from New York to Atlantic City is about $94 (although Amtrak's famous roomettes typically cost much more ). It is pretty budget-friendly compared to any airline fare on the same route, and it is not even the lowest price out there. The cheapest tickets on this Amtrak route can even be found for only $82.

The best thing is to avoid rush hour and book your Amtrak tickets well in advance. Plus, a cool tip: Amtrak offers saver fares on each route, where passengers can save up to 20% compared to the standard Coach fare when booked at least 7 days in advance. Furthermore, Amtrak fares for seniors (aged 65 and up) are 10% less than the standard fare on most trains in the United States, and seniors (aged 60 and up) pay 10% less for cross-border services operated by Amtrak and VIA Rail Canada.

Plenty Dining Choices

Amtrak offers many dining choices to its customers. There is something tasty and appetizing for every passenger, from adults to kids. Some of these main options include:

Passengers can access the café, which is open to passengers from all classes of the train from the early morning until late at night. Whether business or economy class, there are snacks, drinks, and food items for everyone.

  • Traditional Dining

Traditional dining service for passengers in private rooms is provided in the dining car as a complimentary exclusive offering.

  • Flexible Dining

Exclusive offer to First Class passengers to eat at flexible timings. Special diet menus are also available at Amtrak for customers with specific dietary requirements. The food menu comes with a detailed calorie breakdown as well.

A Variety Of Accommodations

The Amtrak from New York to Atlantic City offers various services and accommodations. Among the expert tips for first-time Amtrak passengers is to check the various room options available in order to best fit the needs and budget of a passenger.

  • Seating Options

Even the Coach class has the best comfy seats. Imagine reclining sofa-like seats with spacious areas. The addition of multiple amenities combines to make the trip a relaxing one! For passengers with mobility impairments, Amtrak provides accessible seating arrangements.

  • Private Rooms

Amtrak provides a unique luxurious experience to its passengers by offering private rooms to First Class. If one wants privacy and their own space on a short trip with added comfort, then a private room booking is the perfect step.

Wi-Fi On Board

The Amtrak train comes with complimentary Wi-Fi during traveling. The speed of Amtrak Wi-Fi is less than a passenger’s home or work Wi-Fi network. Furthermore, the same Wi-Fi gets shared by all the passengers on the Amtrak from New York to Atlantic City. So, each passenger should try to surf the internet in such a limited way as not to overburden the network for the other onboard users.

The key is not downloading large files or streaming heavy videos online and keeping fellow passengers in mind while using the shared Wi-Fi. That is why limited access is provided by Amtrak so that more onboard bandwidth is available to all passengers. Access to websites with objectionable content is also restricted in this shared onboard Wi-Fi.

Onboard Upgrades

The trains are divided into classes: Coach, Business, and First Class. All these classes differ from each other, with a different set of rates and amenities for each of them. So, if space is available as unoccupied in a class, one can upgrade from one's original class to that higher class seating. It can be from Coach to Business or Business to First Class.

This smart feature can change the outlook of one's whole journey. Passengers only need to speak to the conductor onboard. They might inform about the availability of such an upgrade and let passengers purchase a new class seat.

Passengers Can Bring A Bicycle Along

Amtrak offers its customers the opportunity to bring their bicycles along. One can explore the stops along the way during a train journey - and what better way to do that than by bike? Ride the rails on board the train with a bike - sounds awesome! Amtrak offers several different services to transport a customer’s bike onboard.

Remember, though, that each train has different equipment and loading procedures that decide what service will be offered. The starting and ending destination stations also determine how or what is allowed by Amtrak regarding one's bicycle. For carry-on/train side, bicycles up to 50 lbs are allowed. Here, standard bicycle sizes apply with a maximum tire width of 2 inches.

Enjoy Guest Rewards

Amtrak offers a guest rewards system to its customers . The points earned can be used to travel on trains, stay at hotels, and shop.

  • Earning Points

Customers can earn guest rewards by earning points through various means, both on and off the train. Passengers can earn 2 points for every $1 spent.

  • Redeeming the Points

Customer of Amtrak can easily redeem their earned points. The reward travel begins at just 800 points, with train travel allowed to over 500 destinations.

  • Member Benefits

Becoming an Amtrak member rewards customers for every ride on and off the train.

  • Bonus Points

One can earn 20,000 bonus points with the new Amtrak Guest Rewards® Preferred Mastercard®. Customers can even choose from over 350,000 hotels worldwide to stay at using their collected points.

Passengers Can Bring Pets

Pets are allowed to travel on Amtrak. However, like with air travel, there are restrictions. Dogs and cats can come on trips that can take up to seven hours on most Amtrak routes in a pet carrier - of course, for a small fee. The pet carrier must also be spacious and highly ventilated, allowing for free movement of the animal, and the weight of the pet and carrier combined must be under 20 lbs.

Things to Note About Pets on Amtrak Trains

  • Service animals are readily welcomed on all Amtrak services as they are not included in the pet category.
  • Pets are not allowed to travel as baggage. A pet must travel with its human counterpart on a train.
  • Only dogs and cats are allowed to travel as pets on Amtrak, and pets must be at least eight weeks old and up to date on all vaccinations.
  • Amtrak highly recommends making pet reservations in advance of one's trip.

Baggage Limits

With Amtrak, customers can shed their baggage worries as the company handles everything meticulously. As baggage, a customer may bring 2 carry-on items. Here, limitations apply regarding weight and size. So, browse them beforehand. Checking this guide on what to pack for an Amtrak train ride may also be handy in terms of prioritizing what to bring (and what not to bring to save baggage weight and space).

Similarly, for checked luggage, each traveler can bring 4 bags, 2 are registered as free, and the other 2 are at $20 per bag. Again, size/weight limitations apply. For special items of baggage that require special handling or are outside the normal baggage category, Amtrak may ask for additional packing requirements and service fees. Amtrak also prohibits certain items onboard trains for security purposes.

Going with unreserved seating on a packed train? No worries. Travelers can find a Red Cap (baggage porter) to escort them to the train. They can access the track before the masses and carry their bags. Red Cap services are free, but a generous tip is recommended.

No Security Line No Waiting

Amtrak lets passengers simply go to the track and get on the train. There is no security line blockage as there is at the airport. With a reduction in airport TSA staff and more passengers flying, travelers need to get to the airport about two hours before their flight just to have enough time to check in or check a bag and clear security.

With Amtrak travel, one's ticket might be scanned before entering the platform or scanned onboard, but there is no waiting line. On the other hand, Amtrak recommends arriving 30 minutes before one's train departs.

Amtrak app is great, it helps me plan my train rides on the east coast. My travel history includes Grand central station in manhattan as a middle point between New Haven CT for College. I was able to use the app to regularly book tickets at Metropark station in Iselin, NJ after getting dripped off and it only takes about 30 minutes to get to NYC, Amtrak travel FAST! The train stops to board new passengers for a max of 5 minutes and handles everything else en route. Only advice I have is stand on the ramp when boarding and be sure to rush to enter the train you bought a ticket for, once seated, after everyone has time to settle in, Amtrak personnel will go through the rows to check passenger tickets and with this app they just scan it, so easy and great! Amtrak business class is great too, high quality is what you get with Amtrak app along with the total travel experience.

Do not recommend

Hello, I hope this message reaches the right audience. I booked a trip to Leavenworth in October though the Amtrak app. When I tried to find a trip, I pressed on the button that states find a train. With this assumption that I was getting a train, and since I’ve never ridden amtrack, I book the first ticket seen. Later when my trip was coming up, I checked on my trip as I was curious what train it was. I googled the number shown and to my surprise 8848 was a bus. With this, I was very confused as this was the only option to choose when booking and I pressed on “Find Trains”. I tried to cancel the trip and I am being charged a large service fee. A fee that does not make any sense to me as I was told this was a train. How am I supposed to know that it’s a bus when I press on find a train. I called customer service and they denied the removal of the cancellation fee. All I wanted was a train ride, and I come out with no train ride, no bus, and less money than what I stated with. I find this process incredibly confusing and unfair for people like me that have never booked a “train” before. As the agent told me, Amtrak assume the customer knows what their booking when they order a trip online. That makes no sense when it was not expressively told to me that it was a bus when I pressed find a train.

Bad Customer Service

I usually have a good experience on Amtrak… today was an exception. I have crutches and a boot. Didn’t ask specifically for disability seats and was given an assigned seat… I asked the attendant if this was aisle or window. She barked Idk… were full. Not true because coming from Philly to Wilson the disability seats were available just as on this return trip. She had to help with bags and didn’t seem to happy. I know the job is tough sometimes dealing with the public but a little courtesy and compassion goes a long way…during the trip I could have been more comfortable but wasn’t given that chance. I could have asked for better accommodation but decided I could make it. Thankfully, my seat-mate got off a few stops later and I was able to get the entire seat to elevate my foot. Sadly, she later got into a confrontational situation with another passenger whom needed to use the restroom during a layover. You don’t have to be nasty to inform customers if a service is not available. Hope the next experience will be better. Signed, Limpy Traveler

Amtrak, CN Quietly Cancel Summer Passenger Train Service Between Montreal, New York

Quebec travellers who were hoping to visit New York City by train this summer will now have to wait until fall.

No passenger trains are set to run between Montreal and the Big Apple until September amid maintenance work on the tracks after Amtrak struck a deal with Canadian National Railway last month.

Schedules at the American passenger railway show that service out of Manhattan will go no farther on the so-called Adirondack route than the upstate New York town of Saratoga Springs between May 20 and Sept. 9.

The prolonged timeline chugs well past the peak of high season and pinpoints an end date 10 weeks later than planned, based on a joint statement the rail companies issued on May 18.

Attempts to book tickets for a summer trip on the Adirondack line prompt a message on Amtrak’s website that says “no trains or buses are scheduled on the travel date” selected, citing the next available day as Sept. 9 or 10, depending on the starting point.

Amtrak said service would now be suspended through Sept. 8 “as CN continues to progress track work on their line in Canada.”

Ottawa to Spend $1B Acquiring Historic Quebec Bridge From CN

“We apologize to our customers for any inconvenience,” said spokesman Jason Abrams in an email on June 9.

CN, which owns the tracks north of the border, confirmed the extended maintenance work by the country’s largest railway.

No statements on the halted route were posted on the two organizations’ sites.

To get between the Dallas and Houston, drivers take Interstate 45, passing stretches of forests and rolling pastures with a ton of traffic congestion at either end. The trip can take anywhere from three and a half to five hours.

Amtrak wants to build a bullet train that cuts that trip down to 90 minutes. It’s one of a few high-speed rail projects that’s been getting attention lately, like the Brightline in Florida between Miami and Orlando that recently opened and the Brightline West between Los Angeles and Las Vegas , which is under construction.

“We — it’s not just me — we want to bring high-speed rail to the U.S.,” said Andy Byford, senior vice president of high-speed rail at Amtrak, during the Southwestern Rail Conference in Hurst, Texas. “It is a system that is safely used in most, just about every other developed country of the world, except for the U.S.”

The idea for a Dallas-to-Houston bullet train has been thrown around for years, but Amtrak officials are saying it could now be built within a decade if federal funding comes through. Last year, Amtrak took the lead on the project when it announced a partnership with Texas Central, the private company tasked with developing it.

“I really do think it’s viable. I think it is the most compelling city pairing in the U.S.,” Byford said.

But high-speed rail is big talk in a state ruled by cars and trucks. Some are skeptical that the bullet train will ever be built.

“I don’t think the political will exists in this country to pay for it ,” said David Peter Alan, editor for the trade magazine Railway Age, during the conference.

Amtrak said it could cost upward of $30 billion; Byford said he’s looking at equity, federal dollars and private money to fund it.

The agency will also have to work with landowners in rural Texas who oppose the project. Some don’t want a bullet train in their backyard.

Still, support for the project is growing. Last December, the Federal Rail Administration gave it a boost with a $500,000 grant to study the scope of the project. Amit Bose, FRA administrator, said the FRA is behind in part because Texas is booming.

“ We cannot overlook how big of a state that Texas obviously is and how much growth is happening here ,” Bose said.

That’s why Byford at Amtrak said that now is the time to start building for better transportation options.

“The alternative is to condemn Americans to ever-more crowded interstates, to condemn taxpayers to just paying for ever-widening of highways,” he said.

Byford predicts that if Amtrak can pull off building the Texas line, it’ll kick start even more rail projects across the country.

Many U.S.-based airlines relaxed their change and cancellation policies after the COVID-19 pandemic started and kept them in place when travel regained popularity.

But Emirates reverted back to its pre-pandemic policy.

International carriers like Emirates have different rules for flight cancellations, and it's a good idea to familiarize yourself with its policies so you know what to expect in case you need to change your plans.

Below are some things you need to know about Emirates’ flight cancellation and refund policy should you have to cancel a flight with the carrier based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Can you cancel an Emirates flight?

Cancellation and change fees apply to certain fare classes, and Emirates' refund policy is rather strict. So, how does Emirates’ cancellation policy work? Let’s look at a couple of real-life examples.

When shopping for Emirates economy-class flights, you have a few fare options: Saver, Flex and Flex Plus. The Saver fare is priced the lowest and comes with the most restrictions.

In this example, the flight from Los Angeles to Dubai has the following change and refund fees.

Keep in mind that hefty no-show penalties will apply when you don’t cancel a ticket ahead of time.

In the example below, the flight departs London-Heathrow, and the Emirates ticket cancellation policy lists different change and refund fees.

Flex Plus fares are the only economy fares that allow free changes and cancellations, but they cost nearly double the price of Saver fares.

When you book a flight with Emirates, take a close look at change and cancellation fees so that you know the penalties associated with changing or canceling a flight ahead of time.

Emirates' 24-hour cancellation policy

The U.S. Department of Transportation's 24-hour rule applies to all Emirates flights originating in the U.S. If you booked a trip and changed your mind within 24 hours, you can cancel the trip and receive a full refund to your original payment method without a penalty. The booking must be made at least seven days before departure for the 24-hour cancellation policy to apply.

How to cancel an Emirates flight

To cancel an Emirates flight reservation, go to the “Manage your booking” section of the site and locate your booking. Depending on the fare conditions of your ticket, a cancellation fee might apply.

Before you cancel a ticket, read any details regarding the cancellation cost or call the customer service line at 800-777-3999. You also can try the live chat function of the website.

Changing an Emirates ticket is also possible through your account, by phone or by chat. Depending on the fare conditions of the ticket, you might be charged for changing your existing booking.

If the new flight you want to change to is more expensive than the one you booked previously, you’ll have to pay the fare difference on top of the change fee. If the new fare is lower, you’ll receive a flight credit or a refund.

How to cancel an Emirates Skywards award flight

Award tickets booked with Emirates Skywards miles can be canceled. Depending on the type of award ticket booked — Saver, Flex or Flex Plus — the fees to change or cancel vary.

Here’s how much you’ll pay to change or cancel an Emirates award flight based on the award type you book.

Saver awards require the fewest miles but cost the most to change or cancel. However, the change and cancellation fees are relatively low, and it could still be worth it to book a Saver award rather than another award ticket type that costs significantly more miles, even if you think you might cancel in the future.

Cancelling an Emirates flight recapped

The only Emirates fares that allow free changes and cancellations are Flex Plus fares, which cost quite a bit extra. Award tickets don’t cost much to change or cancel, which can be a compelling option when booking Emirates flights.

In either case, the 24-hour DOT cancellation policy allows you the chance to cancel flights originating in the U.S. at no cost as long as you do it within 24 hours of booking and seven days before departure.

This City Was Just Named the Happiest in the U.S.

This spot sure can put a smile on your face.

Looking to find a little happiness? Easy. Just book a trip to Minneapolis.

Each year, The Institute for Quality of Life creates an index of the happiest cities on the planet, going into great detail in its analysis to quantify what, exactly, defines happiness and how to measure it in a place.

"The ranking was created on the basis of thousands of indicators thoroughly developed by our researchers that directly relate to the quality of life and the sense of happiness of its residents," the organization's methodology page reads . "Importantly, we do not analyze the happiness of an imaginary individual in every location in the world, but people actually living in these cities."

After looking at all their data, it named the tiny town of Aarhus, Denmark, as the happiest in the world. But just a few spots down, it added Minneapolis, to its "Gold" ranked list, making it the No. 1 in the U.S.

The organization added that it makes "every effort to objectively and reliably assess what is most important for city dwellers and, on this basis, assess the sense of happiness," which it collects through open data and interviews with residents. And it appears the residents of the Minnesota city are quite happy with their way of life.

For starters, it's a rather outdoor friendly spot. As its parks department boasts, it's home to 180 parks with 55 miles of biking and walking paths to explore. It proudly adds that there are also "22 lakes, 12 gardens, and seven golf courses," so you can always find a place to stop and literally smell the roses.

The city also has a robust public transportation system , including buses, a light rail, and a commuter train that make it easy to get to and from work or just to explore every inch of the area.

And, perhaps most importantly, it's a relatively affordable place to call home. Minneapolis ranked sixth in Livability's rankings of best places to live in 2022, with the website noting it scored high marks thanks to its "innovative economy that touches a breadth of industries from software to renewable energy."

It noted there are also lots of fun activities to be had, including visiting its "local microbreweries in the hip North Loop, wonderful waterways that include 22 lakes in city limits … as well as color-saturated, commissioned murals that complement the arts and music scene." And, it also added that "every resident in Minneapolis is within six blocks of a park, making this Twin City a gem for outdoors lovers, families with kids, and pet-loving residents."

So next time you feel like you need a little more joy, go ahead and book that ticket to Minneapolis. Who knows? You may love it so much that the ticket becomes a one-way trip.

I'm a seasoned Amtrak rider who spent 6 hours in business class on a Canadian train for the first time. It was better than any train I've taken in the US.

  • I booked a business-class ticket on a Via Rail Canada train from Toronto to Montreal in 2022.
  • For $200, I sat in a business-class seat with two tables and complimentary meal and drink service.
  • I thought it was nicer than most US trains I've been on, worth the price, and I'd gladly ride again.

Insider Today

In the last three years, I've spent over 150 hours traveling 5,000 miles on trains, from 30-hour overnight rides to quick, three-hour journeys.

I've taken trains along the East Coast of the US, into the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Québec, and between the European countries of Austria, France, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland. Along the way, I've tried out a wide range of seating options, from business and first classes to shared bunks and private rooms.

In August of 2022, I spent six hours traveling in business class from Toronto to Montreal on Via Rail , Canada's main railroad system. It was my first time using Via Rail, and I was surprised by all the business class offerings, from comfy seats to snacks and meals. It was better than my business-class Amtrak experiences in the US — and totally worth the $200 ticket.

Similar to Amtrak, Via Rail is one of the most accessible and popular ways to travel by train in Canada.

ViaRail serves more than 400 stations in eight provinces across Canada with economy seating, business class, and sleeper accommodation, according to the train line's website.

My journey began at Toronto's Union Station.

amtrak cancel trip

I arrived at 7 a.m. for my 8:30 a.m. train to Montreal.

I arrived early because my business-class ticket included access to an exclusive lounge at the station with plenty of seating and free refreshments.

amtrak cancel trip

According to its website, Via Rail's lounges are available to passengers traveling in business class, sleeper plus, prestige, and VIA Rail Premier members traveling in economy.

Amtrak has lounges at select stations too, but they're only free to access for first-class passengers .

The lounge was mostly empty on a Friday morning.

I thought it was a quiet and peaceful place to enjoy a coffee and get some work done.

Around 8 a.m., I made my way to the track where my train was boarding.

amtrak cancel trip

My business-class ticket came with priority boarding , so I was able to skip a long line of passengers.

When I got to my assigned single seat, I was surprised to find that I had a side table in addition to a tray table that pulled out in front of me.

amtrak cancel trip

No train I've ever been on in the US has offered two tables per passenger.

Throughout the trip, I used the side table to hold my coffee while working and to store my laptop while taking work breaks. Beneath the side table, a conveniently placed outlet charged my devices.

Right away, I thought that my Via Rail seat was one of the most comfortable I've ever experienced on a train.

amtrak cancel trip

The Toronto Star reported that Via Rail business-class seats are 18.5 inches wide with a 39-inch seat pitch.

An Amtrak representative told BI that their business-class seats are about an inch wider than Via Rail's with an additional three inches of legroom, but I don't think they're nearly as comfortable.

Unlike Amtrak seats I've sat in, the top of my Via Rail seat was curved, so I was able to rest my head in a comfortable position for lounging.

amtrak cancel trip

The seats reclined, too, just like in the US. This made them even more comfortable.

I also noticed that, unlike on my rides with Amtrak, Via Rail's seat back compartments held a safety pamphlet with directions for what to do in an emergency situation.

amtrak cancel trip

I found this comforting.

The train started moving right on time at 8:32 a.m.

amtrak cancel trip

Shortly after leaving, a train attendant came around with a complimentary drink service. I ordered a coffee.

Then it was time for breakfast. Unlike Amtrak's business-class fares, Via Rail's ticket comes with complimentary meals brought to my seat.

amtrak cancel trip

The train served a warm bagel with cream cheese. It was no New York bagel , I thought, but it was decent and filled me up.

An hour later, an attendant came back around with savory snack packs filled with nuts, pretzels, and crackers.

amtrak cancel trip

Then, train attendants came around again with warm hand wipes before lunch service, which I thought was a nice touch.

Lunch was another business-class perk. The menu was announced over the loudspeaker. The entree choices were trout, chicken, or pasta.

amtrak cancel trip

I went with the pasta. It was a rigatoni dish with sides of corn salad, bread, and carrot bread for dessert. The meal was better than I expected with an al dente cook on the pasta. I also thought it was much better than the pasta I've tried on Amtrak trains.

After lunch, I went to the bathroom and was impressed by how clean it was compared to most train bathrooms I've used.

amtrak cancel trip

I often find overflowing trash cans in train bathrooms, but VIA Rail's looked like it was cleaned recently.

Due to some delays at stops along the way, the train arrived in Montreal about an hour later than scheduled at 2:30 p.m.

amtrak cancel trip

While I thought this was frustrating, at least I was comfortable.

This 6-hour business-class ride cost $200, while a recent 10-hour Amtrak business-class ride cost $163. Although it was more expensive, I think the Via Rail ride was worth the additional cost since I found it to be so comfortable.

amtrak cancel trip

Even though we were late, I found business-class train travel to be more comfortable and pleasant in Canada than I typically do in the US. Now I want to explore more of Canada by train.
