On Jan. 27, 1967, tragedy struck on the launch pad at Cape Kennedy during a preflight test for Apollo 204 (AS-204). Apollo 1 Tragedy

Jan. 27, 1967, tragedy struck on the launch pad at Cape Kennedy during a preflight test for Apollo 204 (AS-204). The mission was to be the first crewed flight of Apollo, and was scheduled to launch Feb. 21, 1967. Astronauts Virgil Grissom, Edward White and Roger Chaffee lost their lives when a fire swept through the command module, or CM. The exhaustive investigation of the fire and extensive reworking of the Apollo command modules postponed crewed launches until NASA officials cleared them for flight. Saturn IB schedules were suspended for nearly a year, and the launch vehicle that finally bore the designation AS-204 carried a lunar module, or LM, as the payload, instead of a CM. The missions of AS-201 and AS-202 with Apollo spacecraft aboard had been unofficially known as Apollo 1 and Apollo 2 missions. AS-203 carried only the aerodynamic nose cone. In the spring of 1967, NASA’s Associate Administrator for Manned Space Flight, Dr. George E. Mueller, announced that the mission originally scheduled for Grissom, White and Chaffee would be known as Apollo 1, and said that the first Saturn V launch, scheduled for November 1967, would be known as Apollo 4. The eventual launch of AS-204 became known as the Apollo 5 mission. No missions or flights were ever designated Apollo 2 or 3.  The second launch of a Saturn V took place on schedule in the early morning of April 4, 1968. Known as AS-502, or Apollo 6, the flight was a success, though two first-stage engines shut down prematurely, and the third-stage engine failed to reignite after reaching orbit.

Major US airlines really, really don't want to show you how much you'll pay in fees upfront

• Big US airlines are suing over a rule that requires upfront fee disclosures.
• The Biden administration is fighting "junk fees" across industries, including baggage fees.
• The airlines argue that fee transparency will confuse consumers. 

Major US airlines sued the Department of Transportation on Friday over a rule that requires upfront fee disclosures for costs like baggage and itinerary changes.

The Biden administration has made fighting the hidden costs it calls "junk fees" a priority across industries, from banks to event companies.

Under the rule, which goes into effect on July 1, airlines have to display fees the first time a consumer sees the fare, not in a hyperlink or separate page. The rule also requires airlines to inform passengers that they do not need to purchase a specific seat to travel and to include all mandatory fees when advertising fares.

The DOT said in late April that these rules could save consumers over $500 million annually from airlines' "unnecessary or unexpected fees."

Fees have become a major revenue driver for airlines. The DOT said its data showed airline revenue from baggage fees alone jumped by more than 30% between 2018 and 2022. Last year, airlines raked in almost $5.5 billion in baggage fees, per the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, and many airlines upped their baggage fees this year.

The airlines suing — which include United, Delta, American, Jet Blue, and Alaska Airlines, along with smaller peers and a lobbying group — argue that fee transparency will confuse consumers. Southwest Airlines, which allows two free checked bags and does not have change or cancel fees, did not join the group.

The rule "is a bad solution in search of a problem," said lobbying group Airlines for America in a Monday statement. Lobbyist groups across industries are fighting the Biden administration's war on junk fees through lawsuits.

The airline lobby successfully pressured Congress in 2018 to drop a plan to limit baggage and change fees, a law the Trump administration opposed.

In a DOT statement about the lawsuit, the agency said it plans to "vigorously defend" the new rule.

"Many air travelers will be disappointed to learn that the airline lobby is suing to stop these common-sense protections," the DOT's statement said.

Sony and Apollo offer $26 billion for Paramount: report

• Apollo and Sony made a $26 billion all-cash offer to buy Paramount, WSJ reportd.
• The Apollo bid is led by the 37-year-old partner behind a $760 million deal for Legendary Entertainment.
• Rival bidder, film studio Skydance, has been trying to win over Paramount for months.

Sony and Apollo Global Management are reportedly bidding big for Paramount.

Sony and the private equity firm teamed up for an all-cash offer of $26 billion for Paramount Global, The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday.

The bid was officially sent on Wednesday, the Journal reported, based on anonymous sources. Sony and Apollo's offer was nonbinding, according to the Journal

Apollo's bid comes after Paramount announced its CEO Bob Bakish was stepping down Monday. The media giant has been negotiating with Skydance Media and its largest private equity backer RedBird Capital Partners , who have been trying to win over Paramount for the better part of a year. They've been in exclusive talks for the last month and the exclusivity period ends tomorrow.

Business Insider's Hayley Cuccinello recently reported that the Skydance consortium, including fellow Skydance investor KKR, submitted a revised offer on Sunday. Paramount would merge with Skydance and stay public, while Apollo's offer would likely take the entertainment giant private. Skydance's newest bid includes a $3 billion cash injection, most of which would go toward paying off shareholders, two sources close to the negotiation told Business Insider.

There are questions as to whether Paramount would stay whole under Apollo and Sony. Apollo previously bid $11 billion for just Paramount's movie studio, the Wall Street Journal reported in March . Paramount would have been left with its lower-performing cable channels and struggling streaming service, and the bid went nowhere.

Apollo partner Aaron Sobel co-signed the offer letter with Sony CEO Tony Vinciquerra, people familiar with the situation told the Journal. Sobel, 37, rose quickly at the firm and has executed media deals at Apollo with partner Lee Solomon. They co-led the $760 million purchase of a minority stake in Legendary Entertainment, the studio behind "Dune," in 2022. Last October, they helped Concord Music Group, a royalties giant, raise $500 million in bond sales to buy the copyright holder of Beatles songs.

Majority shareholder Shari Redstone hasn't commented on the rumors of a sale.
