DESTINATIONS - TAG-ALONG TOURS & TOUR OPERATORS

Remote Outback Australian scenery and terrain, a hot shower each day, fully catered meals, and comfortable swags are among the rare luxuries guaranteed on a series of spectacular motorcycle tours that have been selected and organised by former 500cc grand prix ace Daryl Beattie.

australian outback motorcycle tours

His Outback adventures are a far cry from Beattie’s competitive days and role as a network television sports commentator, but he says there’s a simple reason why:

“I’ve spent many years in the Outback,” said Charleville-born Beattie.

“I have a personal passion for this country and it’s something I want to share with others.

“I’ve spent a lot of time travelling to spectacular and remote parts of Australia and I reckon I’ve picked out some awesome routes for our bike tours.”

Beattie has several adventure motorcycle tours into the Australian Outback, scheduled to fit around his ongoing MotoGP television commitments for Network Ten.

A fully equipped, go-anywhere support vehicle meets every stopover, transporting luggage, kitchen facilities, mattresses and bedding, food, drinks, fuel and spares.

Then the star-show begins……

The ever-changing terrain from Alice Springs to Birdsville will have you traversing the Simpson Desert on the WAA, French and QAA lines. This will include tackling part of the (in)famous Finke Desert Race track, traversing across 3 state borders including a visit to Poeppel corner where NT, QLD & SA meet, dune jumping at the highest 40 metre peak of Big Red, soaking in 36 degree Dalhousie Springs, visiting iconic outback pubs such as Mt Dare and The Birdsville Hotel, spotting for camels, dingoes, donkeys, giant birds of prey and seeing the tracks left by critters who only venture out by night.

Do you have a friend or partner who shares your sense of adventure but doesn’t ride? We’ve got them covered too with a tag-along package that includes everything but the bike (up to 3 seats available per crossing).

So stop thinking about it and get on board! We can’t wait to see you in the Simpson.

A 10 minute walk will take us to Circular Quay and around to the ‘ Rocks ‘ district where we’ll have a celebratory first night dinner, complete with superb views overlooking the iconic Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. The views at night are simply spectacular and it makes for a great start to the tour.

australian outback motorcycle tours

NEW SOUTH WALES SOUTHERN COAST

There are more than 30 national parks scattered along the coastline of southern New South Wales, with incredible marine sanctuaries and nature reserves adding to the already pretty impressive count. The route follows the coast along the Grand Pacific Drive and over the famous Seacliff Bridge, a marvel of modern road building. It’s not possible to ride any closer to the ocean without actually getting wet.

australian outback motorcycle tours

SNOWY MOUNTAINS

Epic alpine scenery in Australia? You bet! Most people don’t realise that Australia has more ski runs than Switzerland, but a ride through this area will soon set the record straight. Although mostly recognised for its winter sports, ‘the Snowies’, as the area is affectionately known, is a playground for those looking for something different and adventurous motorcyclists alike.

Twist through the atmospheric alpine forests, sweep along the winding mountain roads and drink in the fantastic scenery. Whilst you’re having so much fun, don’t forget to stop for lunch at one of the seasonal alpine towns along the way, or pause for a rest on the shores of one of the many pristine snow fed lakes.

australian outback motorcycle tours

VICTORIA HIGHLANDS

New South Wales has the Snowy Mountains and Victoria has the Highlands. A more relaxed alpine environment than the Snowies, but don’t be fooled, there are plenty of thrilling roads to ride and more breathtaking scenery to provide a great backdrop.

Wide open plains framed by rolling hills and jagged mountain peaks, the road stretching far into the distance meandering gently as it weaves through small settlements and tiny communities.

With such unrestricted views all around, there’s plenty of time to prepare for the corners, revel in the experience and then gaze about at the intricate beauty beyond the perfect ribbon of asphalt you’re speeding along.

australian outback motorcycle tours

A bustling, cosmopolitan city with loads to see and do. The ‘Cultural Capital of Australia’ will do its very best to make you feel welcome and it’s the ideal spot to take a break mid tour. Plenty of superb restaurants offering great meals, shopping, parks and an easy to use tram system make touring the city a breeze.

Not quite as much fun as riding a motorcycle along the Great Ocean Road, which is the next highlight on this tour, but at least a close second.

australian outback motorcycle tours

THE GREAT OCEAN ROAD

Famous as one of the most scenic coastal drives in the world, words can’t describe the wonderful scenery and amazing riding on this 280km stretch of road on the fringes of Melbourne, but we’ll try anyway.

australian outback motorcycle tours

As soon as your wheels hit asphalt, you’ll realise just how special the Great Ocean Road really is. The route twists and turns, hugging the picturesque cliffs as it winds a sinuous path along the coast. Curve after sweeping curve are seamlessly stitched together, almost purposely designed to give maximum enjoyment to any motorcycle riders that are lucky enough to be there.

There are plenty of small coastal towns to stop for a break and a coffee, serving up fantastic ocean lookouts along with the great refreshments. The lovely Otway Ranges provide a lush backdrop to the quaint towns when the road darts inland away from the coast. It takes longer than you might expect to ride along this gem of a road, there’s simply so much to see.

australian outback motorcycle tours

Take a walk in the temperate rainforest at Maits Rest, try and spot that iconic Aussie creature the Koala in the trees above, visit the 12 Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge, the Grotto, London Bridge, The Arch the list goes on and on! Don’t forget to watch the road as well as the spectacular views though!

Every motorcyclist should ride this road at least once in their life!

australian outback motorcycle tours

THE GRAMPIANS NATIONAL PARK

The ancient hills of the Grampians National Park make for an awesome spectacle as you ride toward them. This area of granite highlands is jam packed with wildlife, superb lookouts and beautiful waterfalls. The visitor centre at Halls Gap can provide all the information you’ll need for getting the best out of your time there and will give you a great overview of the area, ensuring you get to see everything you want during your visit.

australian outback motorcycle tours

By the time you’ve ridden the roads in the park, taken a short walk to the two main lookouts and perhaps trekked to the base of one of the thundering waterfalls, you’ll need at least a half day to absorb what’s on offer, but will probably long to spend more time lost in the atmosphere of the national park.

australian outback motorcycle tours

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN COAST

Sticking to the coast as you wind your way towards Adelaide provides plenty of fascinating little coastal towns to explore. Some a little more quirky than others! There’s ‘Larry’ the giant lobster in Kingstown who’s definitely not your average specimen, the sleepy coastal towns of Robe and Beachport and the somewhat larger settlement of Mount Gambier.

Home to the magnificent Blue Pool, a lake inside a [hopefully] long extinct volcano which not only provides all the drinking water for the town, but also offers some fantastic scenery to explore as a way of stretching your legs out of the saddle.

australian outback motorcycle tours

Perched on the Fleurieu Peninsula, capital of Southern Australia, ‘City of Churches’ and the perfect blend of urban cool and natural splendour. Adelaide has one of the most impressive botanical gardens in the world, loads of relaxed open spaces and a vibrant atmosphere that makes it a pleasure to wander the streets.

A small town feel with lovely colonial architecture and all the conveniences of a modern city. It’ll be the biggest settlement that you’ll encounter from here until you reach Perth in Western Australia, so it’s the perfect spot to sample that most iconic of Aussie meals, the meat pie floater! That’s a meat pie floating in pea soup for those that haven’t had the pleasure as yet.

australian outback motorcycle tours

CLARE VALLEY

The Clare Valley is one of Australia’s premier grape growing regions and the wine making tradition runs deep in the area. The carefully tended gardens, regimented columns of vines, pristine conservation parks and plethora of open cellar doors makes this area an absolute delight to ride through. Try one of the famous Clare Valley Rieslings with a meal prepared at one of the many local restaurants or wineries.

australian outback motorcycle tours

FLINDERS RANGES

This is the start of what many would consider to be the ‘real outback’ and is the place you’ll really begin to get a feel for the otherworldly landscapes Australia has tucked away. Cavernous red gorges and magnificent mountains seemingly aglow in the sunset, contrast with the starkly beautiful white gum trees standing proud in the thin desert soil. Huge wedge tailed eagles soar in the blue skies above and the peace and solitude make you feel as if you’re on a different planet.

australian outback motorcycle tours

All this can be reached within a relatively short distance of the Wilpena Pound Resort. An oasis in the outback, fully kitted out with all the modern facilities. There are a huge amount of gravel tracks to explore, but if you don’t want to take your bike on the gravel then the 4WD tours are superb and really help to bring the place alive. You’ll have day here to explore and immerse yourself at your leisure.

australian outback motorcycle tours

EYRE PENINSULA

Calm beaches and the warming waters of the Spencer Gulf on one side, jagged cliffs, turquoise blue waters and big skies on the other, the Eyre Peninsula is framed by spectacular sights. With more than 2000km of coastline to explore, we certainly hope you like beaches! It’s also the jumping off point from where you’ll begin your ride along the Eyre Highway heading west, across the world renowned Nullarbor Plain.

australian outback motorcycle tours

NULLARBOR PLAIN

Epic, truly epic. That’s the only way we can think of describing the Nullarbor Plain and the Eyre Highway which stretches across the vastness. The Nullarbor is the largest single piece of limestone in the world, over 200,000 square kilometres of it in fact and crossing it is arguably the quintessential Australian Outback experience.

australian outback motorcycle tours

This seemingly endless plain [‘nullus arbor’ meaning ‘no tree’ in Latin] is a truly incredible thing to ride over. Not only is it physically impressive and the sort of landscape where adventures are made, but the friendly characters you’ll meet along the way, typical Aussie roadhouse pubs and eye-wateringly beautiful sunsets over the desert truly make this a once in a lifetime experience.

australian outback motorcycle tours

The Great Australian Bight runs parallel to the highway for much of the crossing, there’s even whale watching at Head of Bight from June to October.

It’s as much about the people you’ll meet on this journey, as the scenery you’ll be riding through. A quick smile and a “hi!” will have you chatting away and making new friends before you know it.

australian outback motorcycle tours

After crossing the Nullarbor, you’ve certainly earned yourself a reward and Esperance is the ideal spot to indulge. There are some truly incredible beaches around the local area, so there are plenty of opportunities to lie back in the warming sands, dip your toes in the ocean and reflect on the ride so far.

Enjoy the local hospitality and recharge your batteries with some great local cuisine. You’ll have a day available to explore around the town, ride the famous coastal drive and fit in a bit more relaxing!

australian outback motorcycle tours

Founded in 1827 and the oldest permanently settled town in Western Australia, Albany has an old world charm that’s hard to beat and is surrounded by some of the most amazing beaches and coastal national parks in Australia.

You’ll have a day to explore, giving you plenty of time to visit the Blowholes, Nature’s Arch and The Gap. The beaches here have been repeatedly voted the best in Australia and the sand is so pure it squeaks when you walk on it. It’s not all smooth beaches though, some pretty rugged areas of coastline provide the perfect setting for the Albany Wind Farm and a walk around the base of the huge towers offers some great views out over the ocean.

MARGARET RIVER

Immense Karri forests, world leading vineyards, stunning pure white beaches, an amazing coastline, hundreds of mysterious caves and some of the finest cuisine known to man; a carefully kept Australian secret. This is one of the finest areas of Australia and yet one of the least well known outside of Western Australia.

The climate and humidity in the region is ideal for growing grapes, which has led to the prevalence of world class wines heralding from the area. There are more cellar doors to knock on around Margaret River than you could shake a wine glass at!

There are some great tree lined roads and avenues to be ridden too and the cool, moist interiors of the subterranean caverns located along the aptly titled ‘Caves Road’ provide a welcome retreat from the midday temperatures. You’ll be able to spend a full day in Margaret River and its surrounds, soaking up the atmosphere, seeing the sights and enjoying the local produce, before continuing on to the state capital.

Nestled securely in Geographe Bay, Busselton has been a popular holiday spot for West Australians since the 1890s and it’s easy to see why. Beautiful beaches, excellent fishing, cool and enticing caves nearby, a relaxed ‘seaside’ atmosphere and of course the famous jetty which extends two kilometres out into the ocean. The nearby town of Bunbury to the north offers an excellent diversion en-route to Busselton, providing the opportunity to swim with dolphins. A great chance to get up close and personal with most inexplicably happy mammals on the planet!

You can take the train along the jetty in Busselton or if you feel like stretching your legs after a day in the saddle, then the walk is well worth the effort.

Perth is a modern, clean city on the banks of the majestic Swan River. The river feels more like a winding harbour really with Fremantle (‘Freo’ to the locals) at its entrance. Perth has all you’d expect from a thriving city with great shopping, restaurants and nightlife combined with superb beaches and a sublime climate.

The weather is perfect for most of the year with warm winters and hot summers, cooled by the ‘Fremantle doctor’ sea breeze that comes through most afternoons.

Ranked as one of the ‘world’s most liveable cities’, Perth has charm aplenty even if you’re just visiting. A fantastic end point to this incredible, long distance motorbike tour of Australia.

Coasts to the Outback 'Hill'

The sydney region coastline combined with an iconic outback experience showcases the diversity of what a motorcycle adventure in australia is all about..

Let's go! From Sydney we’ll ride down the south coast past so many beautiful beaches you’ll never be able to remember them all. Later in the day, on arguably the best roads anywhere, we’ll end up in Kangaroo Valley in the Southern Highlands. Our second day is a perilous and dramatic ride – The Blue Mountains with its spectacular views and a Jenolan Caves night tour end our second day. Fear not though, our local knowledge and expertise will make this a great day for all.

From Jenolan we head west on an epic two-day ride to Broken Hill. A few long days in the saddle will soon get into ‘the spirit of the outback’ as we see the land get flatter the further west we go. Broken Hill is a real treat with so much to see and do. Mad Max and Pricilla Queen of the Desert were both filmed out here. There’s the Royal Flying Doctors and School of the Air to visit as well as Silverton, Mundi Mundi Plains, the Sculpture Park at sunset and the Living Desert. There’s also mining exhibits, Aboriginal artworks as well as many iconic pubs with interesting locals you'll get the opportunity to have a ‘yarn’ with.

On our way back to the coast we’ll pass through many interesting little towns, travel on roads built for motorcycle riding and taste some Hunter Valley wines as good as you’ll get anywhere in the world. Once back on the coast at Nelson Bay we’ll see even more spectacular Aussie beaches as we ride through to Newcastle City and on to Terrigal for our last night together.

On our last day we’ll visit the Australian Reptile Park to see deadly spiders and snakes as well as kangaroos, koalas, wombats, parrots and much more unique Australian wildlife. Our last afternoon will be spent riding along Sydney’s Northern Beaches and crossing the Sydney Harbour Bridge, before returning our steel horses and having a farewell dinner with new found friends, followed by a well-earned rest.

This tour averages 360km a day on ride days.

This was an incredible experience! Amazing views, beautiful sunrise hikes, (bush) camping in swags and learning so much about geological and cultural history. My tour group was very small which created a very relaxed dynamic. No one was left behind or left out. Teamwork makes the dream work. Sid, our tour guide, is pretty damn awesome in what he does. I learned so much about these parts of Australia and he really kept me engaged because he showed authenticity and genuine engagement with people and his surroundings. He was very professional and cool even when things went a little south (blown out tire with a very long drive ahead). He had to stray away from the itinerary a couple of times but I fully trusted him to give us the best experience on this tour. He noticed when you took an interest in learning specific things and would try and teach you about what he knows. Also shoutout to Gary, who was a trainee tour guide. He'll do great on his first tour through the desert and that group will be lucky to have him. This part of Australia is so unique compared to the east coast and south. It's definitely in my top 2 of tours I've been on.

5 Tips To Tour Australia On A Motorcycle During (Their) Summers

Exploring the vastness of Australia from coast to coast is one of those special things that you must try at least once in your lifetime, and if you love touring on a motorcycle, the open stretches of Australian road will not disappoint you. The best time to visit Australia is during their summers (December to February), which is winter in the northern hemisphere, and that also makes for a great winter escape vacation if you reside above the equator. Here are 5 of the most important tips that you need to know about touring Australia on a motorcycle.

5 Tips for Australian Motorcycle Tours

1. stay hydrated and protect your skin.

Summer temperature in Australia can reach as high as 35 degree Celsius, and we strongly recommend that you don’t venture outdoors during the middle of the day especially if you are not used to such high temperatures. According to the travel advisory issued by the Australian tourism department, the summer sun can burn your skin in less than 15 minutes! So, always make sure to cover your skin with a high SPF (>30) sunscreen lotion and stay hydrated by drinking water whenever you get the opportunity. Look for symptoms of dehydration such as headache and lack of focus and take necessary precaution to avoid being under the sun unnecessarily. A good way to avoid the strong sun is to plan your rides early in the morning, and stay indoors during the mid-day till 3:00 PM. On average, the sun sets by 7:30 PM during summer, which means you get quite a lot of time to cover ground even if you resume your ride after the hottest time of the day.

2. Plan your rides (especially if you are touring the ‘Top End’)

The Northern Territory of Australia, also commonly known as the Top End, is famous for its waterfalls and bustling tropical wildlife that comes alive during the summers (from the beginning of November). Tourists love to visit the UNESCO World Heritage site – Kakadu National Park, famous for glimpses of aboriginal culture and amazing biodiversity. Apart from Kakadu, the Top End draws tourists to its other national parks, namely, Elsey, Nitmiluk and Gregory – all of which are great spots to explore. Being on a motorcycle, you need to be prepared for the tropical rains in the region during this time. Be sure to keep your luggage covered and have appropriate tires on the motorcycle to tackle the occasional muddy patches of off-road sections. It’s also a good idea to find out whether the roads exist because rain water often submerges unpaved roads here.

motorbike tous australia

3. Watch for the speed cameras

Speed limits in Australia are strictly reinforced which means you need to keep an eye on your speed limit and stay within the demarcated maximum. One thing that trips travelers from the United States and Europe is that speed limits are kilometers per hour instead of mph. If you fail to abide by the speed limits there are speed trap cameras placed all along the highway which will definitely catch you and penalize you.

4. Brush up your outback survival skills

The Australian Outback is a particularly challenging place and it is very sparsely populated, which means if you get into trouble it’s all guts & wits that will get you out of trouble! Most of the road related injuries in the Outback happen because of unpaved road surfaces so you need to have a motorcycle that is worthy of tackling those challenges. Also, it is a good idea to never ride alone and have somebody accompany you on your trip to the Outback, preferably someone with camping skills and who knows his or her way around motorcycles. Make sure to get updated maps (you’ll need paper maps, because the internet connectivity is iffy at best) and plan your route accordingly. Carry a motorcycle repair kit, and enough food and water to last you at least a couple of days even if you do not plan to be out for more than 9 hours at a stretch.

5. Learn a little about Australian motorcycles

The Australian automobile landscape is completely different from what you would expect if you are an American or a European visiting Australia for the first time. While you might get quite a few common automobile brands, there is a vast difference in the models and makes of vehicles available here. BMW GS1250s, Tiger Triumphs, Africa Twins or Yamaha Teneres may not be as easily available as you might expect, which means you will need to find a compatible machine if you do not already have your own motorcycle. It is also a good idea to acquire an international driving license from the Automobile Association in your country before arriving here with intentions of riding or driving around.

Last but not least, getting the basics right can completely change your travel experiences. One of those is getting the best accommodation in Australia for your budget, and the second is staying safe during your motorcycling trips, which is why we strongly recommend that you wear the proper riding gear such as a Safest Motorcycle Helmet , gloves and a pair of riding boots.

This outback adventure takes you to the well-known sights - Wilpena Pound and Flinders Ranges National Park - but also to lesser-known gems, including Brachina Gorge, Parachilna Gorge, Bunyeroo Gorge, which we see and explore on a collection of day trips through the Flinders regions. Our small group Australian Outback tour of the Flinders Ranges allows you to see and explore an ancient landscape more than 600 million years old. We learn about the Aboriginal culture and history, dating back 60,000 years, and reflect on the history of European settlement in the 18th and 19th centuries. We also see not just a diversity of natural wildlife but abundant wildlife all in their natural habitat in this extraordinary landscape of the Australian outback.

Leaving Adelaide, our escorted tour into the outback first explores Port Augusta , stopping briefly in Port Wakefield, a historic port that extracted copper ore and livestock in the Victorian era. Port Augusta is regarded as the crossroads of Australia, where rail, road, and sea intersect and is the gateway to the Flinders Ranges. Before we head deep into the Australian outback, we spend time at the 250-hectare Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden to prepare ourselves for our Flinders journey by understanding with our tour guide the natural habitats of the Australian outback.

On a road trip through the outback, the times between destinations are typically large - so it's good to have some understanding to make the most out of the many extraordinary landscape settings you will see from our bus. Hopefully, through our time in Port Augusta, we will have set the scene for our two-hour trip to Woomera , and four-hour trip to the opal mining settlement of Coober Pedy on the third day of our tour.

Journey into the Australian outback

After Port Augusta, this trip spends two nights in Coober Pedy as part of our trip through the outback. Described by writers in the British Telegraph as the 'world's strangest town', Coober Pedy is a fascinating place where half the town's residents live under the earth. Built around opal mining, the town's residents dealt with the arid climate by moving their residences underground. Today, residents can even play golf underground! Sure, the course has no grass and is played on in the dark -- but it offers reciprocal golf course rights with Scotland's ancient Royal golf course at St Andrews. Coober Pedy has also been the background for many Australian films, so you may recognise the scenery! Today, Coober Pedy is a thriving town, home to some fifty different nationalities.

These Australian outback tours are where you will see the world's largest continuous construction - a 5600 km dingo fence spanning Queensland's east coast to the cliffs of the Nullarbor Plain - can be seen near Coober Pedy . It was built in order to protect sheep from dingo attack.

After a tour of Coober Pedy, during which we explore the opal mining activity that made the town famous, we visit the John McDouall Stuart Monument . Stuart (1815-1866) was the most accomplished and most famous of all Australia's inland explorers. Stuart completed the first European crossing of Australia from Adelaide to Van Diemen's Gulf in the Northern Territory in 1862, charting new territory and routes into the outback. His explorations eventually resulted in the building of the Adelaide- Darwin telegraph through the town of Oodnadatta , and the establishment of the main route from Port Augusta to Darwin , now known as the Stuart Highway in his honour. Despite his fame, he never made the fortune he aspired to through pastoral leases in South Australia, and returned to his native London, where he lived out his remaining days.

From Coober Pedy, we make a day tour to the Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park, which overs almost 15,000 hectares of majestic arid desert scenery. The park is home to almost 60 native flora species, including acacias, mallee and eremophilia. It is also home to a variety of wildlife, including the red kangaroo, echidnas, rock wallabies, numerous bird species, and the fat-tailed Dunnart, a mouse-like marsupial. The groups tour guide and local guides share with us their knowledge of the park along the walking trail as we take a short hike in the park.

After Coober Pedy , our small group tour of the Flinders Ranges makes its way via the Painted Desert to Oodnadatta, where we start the track heading further into the Australian outback, with most sections of road being unsealed, especially between Oodnadatta and Wilpena. After a night at Oodnadatta the small group tours travels south to William Creek and then we head to Lake Eyre (North) National Park (and yes - there is also a Lake Eyre (South)). Lake Eyre itself - known by local indigenous people as Kati Thanda - covers an area of 11, 000 square km, and the surrounding National Park covers 13.5 thousand square km. A unique salt lake, the lake bed is recorded as being the lowest part of The Australian continent, 15 metres below sea level. Lake Eyre is normally dry, filling completely on average twice a century - though partial, minor fillings happen much more often. When filled completely (as happened in 1950, 1974, and 1984), the lake takes about two years to dry up again. To explore the northern part of Lake Eyre, we base ourselves in William Creek, and explore the southern part of the lake on our way to Marree . The group takes a scenic flight over Lake Eyre to understand the vast size of the lake system, putting it into perspective within the national parkland Australian outback, as the landscape rolls away underneath the plane.

Our Outback Australia tours for small groups then proceeds to the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary and the Vulkathunha-Gammon Ranges National Park. The National Park forms the traditional country of the Adnyamathanha people, and retains a cultural importance for the local Aboriginal communities . The spectacular terrain can be explored on many hiking trails leading into spectacular gorges, including Italowi Gorge, Mount McKinlay Spring, and the Weetootla Gorge, taking you deep into the heart of the rugged landscapes of the Flinders Range outback. The Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary is a privately-owned 610 square kilometre (236 square mile) wilderness sanctuary at the far northern tip of the Flinders Ranges National Park. The scenery is impressive: soaring granite peaks, deep gorges, and waterholes - and the sanctuary is one of the best places to see the rare yellow-footed rock wallaby . On our visit, we have a guided tour and understand the diversity of plants and animals observed, discussing those that are rare and endangered and their conservation within the network of Flinders Ranges National Parks .

From the Arkaroola Wilderness sanctuary, your small group tour visits the Ediacaran fossil site at Nilpena Station, and then makes the trip on to Wilpena in the Flinders Ranges National Park, stopping off at Brachina Gorge on the way.

Brachina Gorge is one of the Flinders Ranges National Park's most popular and spectacular tourist attractions. The Brachina Gorge Geological Trail is a 20-kilometre self-guided trail that passes through 130 million years of natural history. Trail signage provides an insight into past climates, the formation of the ranges, and the evolution of early life forms, making the gorge one of the highlights of the Flinders Ranges national park network.

Wilpena Pound (Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park) is our last overnight stop in the outback. Some six hundred kilometres away from Adelaide, Wilpena Pound (also known by the Adnyamathanha people's name of Ikara, meaning 'meeting place') is a truly extraordinary landscape, a natural amphitheatre of mountains. Geologists believe that this landscape is the remains of a mountain range that was once as high as the Himalayas.

After Wilpena the small group tour of the Flinders range makes the trip to Adelaide via Hawker, Wilmington, Orroroo, and Burra . On our return to Adelaide, we enjoy a final dinner at the group's selected hotel.

On our return journey, the group passes through mallee country . ‘Mallee woodlands’ have been listed by the Australian Department of Environment and Energy as one of the 32 ‘Major Vegetation Groups’ of Australia. Mallee country is defined by the predominance of the mallee eucalyptus, a stocky eucalyptus with several stems, which grows on semi-arid soil. Mallee country spreads in a belt across the south of Australia, centering around the Murray River in western Victoria and eastern South Australia, the Eyre Peninsula west of Adelaide, and the 'wheat belt' of Western Australia.

For European settlers, the mallee was a 'dreadful country', desolate and inhospitable, but Aboriginal Australians made a home in these areas for at least 40, 000 years . In South Australia, Aboriginal people lived by the Murray River, which provided fish, meat, and plant life, including the kumpung, which had an number of uses, with the roots used to create a carbohydrate starch akin to flour, and the leaves to create twine, used to construct fishing nets and accessories. In more remote and arid areas, Aboriginal groups such as the Ngargad dealt with a lack of surface water by digging soaks into impervious clays that collected underground water.

Day 1: Adelaide

Accommodation: Adelaide. TBA

The group meets in the afternoon at the hotel for a tour briefing and group introductions. This evening there is a group welcome dinner.

Day 2: Port Augusta

Accommodation: Port Augusta - TBA

Leaving Adelaide, our escorted tour into the outback first explores Port Augusta , stopping briefly in Port Wakefield, a historic port that extracted copper ore and livestock in the Victorian era.

Port Augusta is regarded as the crossroads of Australia , rail, road, and the sea intersect and is a place of importance today as it has been for almost 200 years. In the afternoon the group tours Port Augusta by small coach.

Port Augusta is also the gateway to the Flinders Range .

Day 3: Port Augusta

This morning we spend time at the 250-hectare Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden to prepare ourselves for our Flinders journey by understanding with our tour guide the natural habitats of the Australian outback that are presented in this park. This afternoon we have a session including tuition about riding in the outback and on unsealed roads.

Day 4: Coober Pedy

Accommodation: Coober Pedy -TBA

This morning we head deep into the Australian outback , to Coober Pedy. Our initial journey is a two-hour trip to Woomera where we stop and explore with a short exploratory tour. We continue on for a further four-hours to the opal mining settlement of Coober Pedy . We spend two nights here.

A late afternoon tour of Coober Pedy, during which we explore the opal mining activity that made the town famous, we then visit the John McDouall Stuart Monument. Stuart (1815-1866) was the most accomplished and most famous of all Australia ‘s inland explorers we learn about his stories of exploration. Stuart completed the first European crossing of Australia from Adelaide to Van Diemen’s Gulf in the Northern Territory in 1862, charting new territory and routes into the outback .

Day 5: Coober Pedy

Accommodation: Coober Pedy - TBA

From Coober Pedy, we make a day tour to the Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park, which overs almost 15,000 hectares of majestic arid desert scenery.

The park is home to almost 60 native flora species, including acacias, mallee and eremophilia. It is also home to a variety of wildlife, including red kangaroo , echidnas, rock wallabies, numerous bird species, and the fat-tailed dunnart, a mouse-like marsupial. The groups tour guide and local guides share with us their knowledge of the park.

We return to Coober Pedy overnight.

Day 6: Coober Pedy

Today is a rest day and as we prepare to to travel to Oodnadatta early next day.

Our journeys from here until Wilpena Pound will be mostly on unsealed roads, and depending on weather or road conditions we may need to occasionally detour from our original path to reach our next destination.

Day 7: Oodnadatta

Accommodation: Pink Roadhouse

Depending on the road conditions we’ll detour via the Painted Desert a region that has taken over 80 million years to evolve from the time of the ancient inland sea. This area has eroded away over time, and combined with the leaching of minerals from the soil, create this magical area where colours change during the day. Day 8: William Creek

In the morning we visit the Railway Museum (the museum is not staffed, but a key is available at the Pink Roadhouse). The museum contains a series of interesting photographs chronicling the history of the town, local Aboriginal artefacts, an exhibit of the role of Oodnadatta in the history of the Australian Inland Mission and much more. You and your Leader can then decide if you will stay around Oodnadatta for a bit longer people watching and resting or proceed to William Creek, located about 200km south on the Oodnadatta track. We pause at the half-way mark in the Algebuckina region and view the Neales River and the railway bridge, the longest in South Australia spanning 578m.

Day 9: William Creek

Today we’ll enjoy morning scenic flight over Lake Eyre followed by free time to rest from our travels so far. We meet again in the evening for a group dinner at our hotel. The scenic flight over Lake Eyre will show us the vast size of the lake system, putting it into perspective within the national park and the Australian outback, as the landscape rolls away underneath the plane.

Day 10 : Marree

Accommodation: Marree

After breakfast we continue on to Marree, with a short trip to Curdimurka as we travel South.

Marree is the end of the line for the rail from Port Augusta and the long journey from channel country for the cattle driven down the Katherine track. This historic town is explored in the afternoon. We take a walk to tour the township with our guide, enjoying the stories from the towns history.

Day 11: Parachilma

Brachina Gorge is one of the Flinders Range National Park ‘s most popular and spectacular tourist attractions. The Brachina Gorge Geological Trail is a 20-kilometre self-guided trail that passes through 130 million years of natural history. We continue on to Wilpena in the Flinders Ranges National Park.

Day 16: Wilpena Pound

Accommodation: Wilpena - TBA

Today we spend the morning exploring Wilpena Pound with a local guide.

Yura and udnyu: a history of the adnyamathanha of the north flinders ranges.

Peggy Brock

The beautiful, rugged north Flinders Ranges is the home of the Adnyamathanha. Their creation stories tell of their physical and cultural longevity in the region. However, their lives and community were seriously disrupted with the advent of British colonialism from the mid-nineteenth century.

Using firsthand accounts from Adnyamathanha and archival sources this book traces the history of colonial incursion and Adnyamathanha responses from 1840 to the era of native title in the twenty-first century. From early violent encounters between Adnyamathanha and colonists looking for land to graze their stock, employment of Adnyamathanha in the pastoral and mining industries, through hard times during droughts and economic depression, the establishment of the United Aborigines Mission at Nepabunna, to the era of self-determination in the 1970s, Adnyamathanha have shown great resilience in their ability to adapt to changing circumstances while maintaining a strong sense of identity and community. Throughout, they have seized opportunities to inform the wider society of their cultural knowledge and maintain their rights to country.

Flinders, the man who mapped Australia

The fascinating story of the exceptional maritime explorer, Matthew Flinders - the man who put Australia on the map. Shipwrecks, storms, death and danger - Matthew Flinders encountered it all on his courageous quest to circumnavigate and chart the treacherous Terra Australis coastline. From the drama of epic voyages and devastating shipwrecks; his part in the naming of Australia; his cruel imprisonment by the French on Mauritius for six long and harrowing years; the heartbreaking separation from his beloved wife; and the comfort he got from his loyal cat, Trim; to his tragic death at just forty. This is a gripping adventure biography that details the life of Flinders, a true hero whose name is forever woven into the fabric of Australian history.

A History of South Australia

Paul Sendziuk, Robert Foster

A History of South Australia investigates South Australia's history from before the arrival of the first European maritime explorers to the present day, and examines its distinctive origins as a 'free' settlement. In this compelling and nuanced history, Paul Sendziuk and Robert Foster consider the imprint of people on the land - and vice versa - and offer fresh insights into relations between Indigenous people and the European colonisers. They chart South Australia's economic, political and social development, including the advance and retreat of an interventionist government, the establishment of the state's distinctive socio-political formations, and its relationship to the rest of Australia and the world. The first comprehensive, single-volume history of the state to be published in over fifty years, A History of South Australia is an essential and engaging contribution to our understanding of South Australia's past.

The Crow Eaters: A journey through South Australia

Outsiders think of South Australia as being different, without really knowing much about it. Combining his own travel across the million-square kilometres of the state with an investigation of its history, Ben Stubbs seeks to find out what South Australia is really like.

In the spirit of the best travel writing and literary non-fiction, he lingers in places of quiet beauty and meets some memorable people. Along the way he debunks most of the clichés that plague the state. Travelling to Maralinga, Ceduna, Kangaroo Island, the Flinders Ranges, Coober Pedy, the storied Adelaide suburb of Elizabeth and the once-mighty river that is the Murray, Stubbs brings this diverse state to life. He even addresses head-on the question ‘Is South Australia weird?’

Readers will find it hard to resist the book’s implicit invitation to take a look at places much closer to home, to take the time to drink in dramatic landscapes that are slow, deep and speckled with unforgettable characters.

The Ship That Never Was: The Greatest Escape Story Of Australian Colonial History

Adam Courtenay

The greatest escape story of Australian colonial history by the son of Australia’s best-loved storyteller

In 1823, cockney sailor and chancer James Porter was convicted of stealing a stack of beaver furs and transported halfway around the world to Van Diemen's Land. After several escape attempts from the notorious penal colony, Porter, who told authorities he was a 'beer-machine maker', was sent to Macquarie Harbour, known in Van Diemen's Land as hell on earth.

Many had tried to escape Macquarie Harbour; few had succeeded. But when Governor George Arthur announced that the place would be closed and its prisoners moved to the new penal station of Port Arthur, Porter, along with a motley crew of other prisoners, pulled off an audacious escape. Wresting control of the ship they'd been building to transport them to their fresh hell, the escapees instead sailed all the way to Chile. What happened next is stranger than fiction, a fitting outcome for this true-life picaresque tale.

The Ship That Never Was is the entertaining and rollicking story of what is surely the greatest escape in Australian colonial history. James Porter, whose memoirs were the inspiration for Marcus Clarke's For the Term of his Natural Life , is an original Australian larrikin whose ingenuity, gift of the gab and refusal to buckle under authority make him an irresistible anti-hero who deserves a place in our history.

What other Outback Australia tours does Odyssey offer?

Odyssey has a collection of Australian Outback tours that seek to provide an outback experience that foster a greater understanding of the outback , the communities who live here today and in the past, the landscapes and the wildlife. The Australian outback tour collection are an adventure with people who know and understand Outback Australia . Each outback tour is different. For example Odyssey will take the senior traveller on a guided tour into the Northern territory with a tour of Australia’s red centre and the Canning stock route or up into Kakadu national park . The Dubbo to Dubbo outback Australia tour is an Australian adventure that takes the senior traveller up through outback Queensland via Winton to Hughenden and then back to Cathedral gorge to see some incredible Aboriginal rock art as you pass through to Lightning ridge and to Dubbo. Then in Western Australia our Outback tours of Western Australia include a tour of the Kimberley region featuring the bungle bungle range. The Western Australia tour is a trip that starts on the west coast in Broome on the Kimberley coast. These tours of Western Australia on the Kimberley coast introduce the traveller to the pristine beaches before turning inland across Western Australia to Kununurra close to the border with the Northern Territory . From here our tours of Western Australia head to the bungle bungle and then returns across the Kimberley region to Broome over several days where this western Australia tour finishes. From Broome there are regular connecting flights to Perth and across to Sydney or Melbourne . The Outback Australia tours from Broken Hill take the traveller on a outback adventure across three states, New South Wales, South Australia & Queensland. The outback experience included on this trip includes time in Birdsville with guided tour of the surrounding desert environments, before returning back along the Birdsville track to Broken hill via Aarkoroola.

At the moment Odyssey does not offer adventure tours to Uluru ( Ayers rock ) or Cairns to reach the Great barrier reef . There are many many choices of tour operators who can provide experiences such as an Uluru tour to here and other high demand destinations than Odyssey can provide as an experience in the “ aussie outback “.

What animals live in the Flinders Range?

The Flinders Range are home to abundant wildlife including a notable population of kangaroos and wallabies. Perhaps surprisingly, this population has increased since European settlement, as the eradication of dingos and establishment of permanent waterholes for stock has allowed the land to support a more permanent population. The Flinders is home to the red kangaroo (the largest of the kangaroo species), western grey kangaroos and wallaroos. The yellow footed rock wallaby neared extinction after the arrival of Europeans (due to hunting by foxes), but has since recovered in numbers.

The Flinders ranges national park is also home to several lesser-known marsupials, including the dunnart, and the planigale. There are a large number of bird species in the region, including emus, parrots, galahs, and wedge-tailed eagles. Reptiles include goannas, snakes, dragon lizards, while the streambank froglet is an amphibian found only in the Flinders Range and Gammon Ranges.

Can you drive into Wilpena Pound?

You can drive to Wilpena but not into the pound. As part of our small group tour we’ll be walking into the pound and climbing up to a lookout. Although the Ikara- Flinders National Park has a sealed road network, though be warned that you will likely encounter unsealed road while exploring the region.

How do you get to the Flinders Ranges from Adelaide?

The Flinders Ranges are approximately 450 kilometres north of Adelaide , around a five and a half hour drive. Take one of several routes to Hawker, then follow the signs to Wilpena Pound .

Odyssey Traveller’s tour of the Flinders Ranges approaches the region from the north, after we explore Coober Pedy , Lake Eyre and the Australian outback. Following our time in the Flinders Ranges, we return to Adelaide.

What is the best time to visit the Flinders Range?

Mild temperatures from late March to October make this period the best for walking. In summer, temperatures can reach extreme highs of 35-40 degrees, and the park can get crowded. Reflecting this, Odyssey Traveller’s tours are currently scheduled for July – October 2020 and March – April 2021.
