Positive Reviews From Clients

bay tour santa cruz

This is the perfect tour to get to know the closest attractions to Pto.Ayora without having to spend the whole day as it only lasts for one morning. If you plan accordingly, you could even go somewhere else in the afternoon. Swimming with sea lions at Playa los Perros or cliff jumping in the crevices are some of the activities you can enjoy in this tour, which costs approximately $30 per person. You'll also have the opportunity to spot blue-footed boobies, marine iguanas, and sea wolves, among other species. We highly recommend this tour!

Thank you to Roberto Haro who provided us with wonderful service!! His team was very skilled and friendly!! We took the glass-bottom boat all the way to the caves...we saw some animals swimming around during our ride. Definitely the best option because it gives you something different from the rest ♡ Especially noticeable is that they LOVE what they do ♡ and you can feel that!! We didn't have to worry about snorkeling equipment, since they provided it...and we were delighted!! There's no doubt that when we return to Santa Cruz, we'll count on AquaTours again! Excellent in Everything!! Thank you for giving us one of the best experiences of our lives!

Bay Tour in Santa Cruz

Bay Tour Santa Cruz

In April, a member of the Rebecca Adventure Travel team went to the Galapagos Islands and visited Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz is filled with picturesque landscapes, wildlife, and beautiful beaches. You will learn more about the best places to visit in Santa Cruz, such as, Playa de los Perros, Punta Camaño Islet, and Las Grietas. Read about her experience on the Bay tour in Santa Cruz here!

1. Playa de los Perros

The first stop of the bay tour of Santa Cruz in the Galapagos was at a small island in front of the coast. The Galapagos Archipelago consists of 19 islands, all located in the Pacific Ocean , and varying in size and potential activities.

After crossing this island, we arrived at Playa de Los Perros or Beach of the Dogs . This beach was named like this because of the numerous dog crabs that were found in the area. Galapagos is home to some of the most beautiful and pristine beaches , and definitely worth a visit.

This is a small beach and you can find plenty of iguanas and sally lightfoot crabs . The iguanas tend to just relax on the rocks and soak in the sun. On the way back to the boat you will pass through Canal del Amor  which is a beautiful canal between 2 cliffs with turquoise water.  Many people believe that in this canal love feels like magic .

TIP:  Wear some sandals or good shoes as you will have to walk on the lava rocks.

Featured Image

2. Punta Camaño Islet

After the walking part of the tour, we went back to the boat to go snorkeling on the other side of the island. Punta Camaño is known for its beautiful reeves, and the big opportunity to experience a wide variety of colorful fish and sea lions .

The water had a  nice temperature, and we were able to see some animals underwater ! We spotted 2  turtles , one small ray, and a few fish, and if you are lucky, you will also be able to spot sea lions.

This activity took around 30 minutes . It was not mandatory to go in the water as you could also stay on the boat while the others snorkel . Once back on the boat, we were provided some  snacks  like biscuits, bananas, and drinks . In the islands of the Galapagos, you will find some of the best food , made with freshly caught fish !

bay tour Santa Cruz

3. Las Grietas

This is a beautiful crack in between 2 cliffs where you can swim in  crystal clear water . Las Grietas is a very beautiful spot and with its clear blue water, surrounded by cliffs, also very picturesque.

It takes about 5 minutes to walk from where the boat drops you off. When arriving at Las Grietas , you will find a wooden stair that brings you to the crack, from where you can jump into the water .

Local people jump from the various heights off the cliff but that is not recommended. Underwater there is not much to see, but it is a  beautiful place regardless. Once the sun goes away from the water, it can be very cold. Also, it is recommended to leave Las Grietas before sunset as the walking trail has no lightning.

bay tour santa cruz

TIP:  If you can choose the time to go to this place, go early, around 6 AM, to have the whole clove to yourself!

Santa Cruz is the second-largest island of the Galapagos Archipelago . The most developed and largest town in the Galapagos is to find in Santa Cruz: Puerto Ayora. Puerto Ayora is considered to be the tourist hub of the archipelago. It is known for the Charles Darwin Research Station , where the breeding program for the endangered giant tortoises is located. The island is also known for its beautiful beaches and a nice lively town , with restaurants, bars, shops, and more.

There are many things to experience while in Santa Cruz. For example the Rancho Primicias , a privately owned ranch, where you can see dozens of giant tortoises , walking around in the grass.

You can also visit Tortuga Bay , a beautiful white sandy beach, Lagunas Las Ninfas , and Playa de la Estacion .  The possibilities are many. For more inspiration, take a look at this self-guided blog on Santa Cruz.

10 AWESOME TOURS IN SANTA CRUZ, GALAPAGOS

The pirate caves in Floreana Island, on the Tours in Santa Cruz list

Home > Galapagos > Santa Cruz > 10 AWESOME TOURS IN SANTA CRUZ, GALAPAGOS

  • Last Updated: June 6, 2024

Santa Cruz Island in the Galapagos is the main island of the archipelago and therefore I’ve listed here the 10 best land-based tours in Santa Cruz you can do in order to take the most of your time here. Snorkeling and scuba diving tours are not part of this list, if you are interested in those specific tours check my full dedicated articles on them here .

It is the island with the best infrastructure and tourist vibe of all the three main ones and like all of them it has adventures for all tastes. Here you can see all the most famous endemic animals of the Galapagos, explore the island on land and on water, learn about its history and conservation projects, and explore many of the other islands nearby.

Most of the tours I’ve done them myself and I’ve written detailed articles about them, which I will link together.

The viewpoint at Bartolome Island, one of the best Galápagos Islands tours and one of the best beaches.

BEST TOURS IN SANTA CRUZ

General info.

Santa Cruz, like all the other islands, is part of the Galapagos National Park, and therefore it has a number of things you should know:

  • Most of the activities have to be done on a tour with a Naturalist guide.
  • All the agencies have the same prices (although you can barter if you book more than one tour).
  • Most beaches have opening and closing times (turtle nesting reasons).
  • You should book your tour at least one day in advance (or you might risk not having a place on the best ones).
  • Bring Seasickness Medication for the tours on the water.
  • Always use strong sunscreen (Sun in the Equator line burns more).
  • Have mosquito repellant with you, especially at sunset. There are horseflies in the Galapagos.
  • You can’t fly a drone here unless you have a special permit from the National Park.
  • You can’t rent a motorcycle or a car, everything has to be done by taxi, bus, boat, bicycle, or on foot.
  • You can’t and shouldn’t touch the animals on the island.

Best Land-based Tours in Santa Cruz, Galapagos

BOOK YOUR TOURS HERE

These are tours i didn't do myself but have good reviews on viator and might save you some time while on the island., 1. highlands tour - half day.

The Highlands Tour or Tour Parte Alta is one of the best tours in Santa Cruz for inland exploration. You will venture to the middle of the island and visit “Los Gemelos”, which are ancient lava-made crater pits, followed by a visit deep inside some impressive  lava tunnels  and end up at the  tortoise reserve  “Las Primícias”.

Los Gemelos Craters in the Highlands Tour of Santa Cruz, Galápagos, one of the best Galápagos Islands tours.

2. BAY TOUR - HALF DAY

The Bay Tour or Tour de Bahía is another of the best land-based tours in Santa Cruz. It lets you see all the incredible water and lava-rock formations that exist on this island and a lot of its flora and fauna. All of this in just a half-day tour. You will snorkel with lots of tropical fish and hopefully, turtles and baby sharks , visit and swim at Las Grietas canyon, and watch the beautiful Love Channel , between other places.

To book this tour:  Check the local company  Galapagos Dream’s website , or book it online on Viator here: Half Day Bay Tour in Santa Cruz Island

The second section of Las Grietas in Santa Cruz, Galápagos

3. DRAGON HILL TOUR - HALF DAY

The Cerro Dragon or Dragon Hill tour is usually booked with a cruise for its remoteness on the northwestern point of Santa Cruz island. Its main attraction is the multitude of beautiful orange land iguanas and marine iguanas, from where the name Dragon comes from. You will also see many Opuntia giant cacti and probably a lot of flamingos and other birds. On some of the tours you can snorkel and you might see baby reef sharks and sea lions.

Here I’ll leave you some companies whose yachts pass there: Letty by Ecoventura, Celebrity Xpedition by Celebrity Cruises, Explorer II by EQ Touring, La Pinta and Isabela II by Metropolitan Touring.

To book this tour please check with the tour agencies on the island, I couldn’t find any online that I could honestly suggest to you apart from the cruises.

4. COFFEE TOUR - HALF DAY

The coffee farm is called El Trapiche Ecológico Galapagos and its coffee tour is probably one of the tastier tours in Santa Cruz. Yes, there is coffee produced solely in Santa Cruz. I’ll be honest, the coffee I tasted in San Cristóbal was tastier than the one from Santa Cruz, but I’m not sure it was from this farm, so maybe their coffee is as amazing as San Cristobal’s one. Give it a try!

To book this tour contact them at:

5. BARTOLOMÉ ISLAND - FULL DAY

The Bartolomé Island Tour is the most iconic tour you can do on the Galapagos islands. You will go on a gorgeous sailing ship starting at Santa Cruz island, passing through the Daphne islands, and arrive at the beautiful Bartolomé island, almost an islet from Santiago island. With luck, you might spot some penguins as we did and then you go snorkeling on one of the paradisiac beaches in the near.

The name of the island comes from Charles Darwin’s friend Bartholomew James Sullivan who was the principal surveyor and second lieutenant aboard the HMS Beagle. Bartolomé is a volcanic tuff islet on the east side of Santiago island. It is the most photographed place in the Galapagos archipelago.

View the full blog post here: BARTOLOMÉ ISLAND TOUR

To book this tour: Check the local company Galapagos Dreams’s website , or book it online on Viator with any of the tours underneath:

Isla Bartolomé Galápagos, one of the best Galápagos Islands tours.

6. NORTH SEYMOUR ISLAND - FULL DAY

North Seymour island is located on the north part of Santa Cruz island, over Baltra island (aka South Seymour island). You will see just like in Cerro Dragon hill (on the northern part of Santa Cruz) and on Baltra island, beautiful orange land iguanas, blue-footed boobies, frigate birds, marine iguanas, and probably sea lions.

Both North and South Seymour Islands were named after the British royal navy officer of the late 18th century, Admiral Lord Hugh Seymour. If you’re more fond of scuba diving, I wrote a full article on my dive here that I’ll link underneath.

7. ISABELA ISLAND - FULL DAY

Isabela island is the third main island of the archipelago and it happens to be the biggest one of the three. If you have time I do recommend you to actually go and sleep there and start your tours from there, Isabela island’s landscape is wonderful. Two-thirds of the island is unoccupied and you can’t visit it unless you go on a National Geographic expedition or some scientific research trip of a sort.

Most of the Isabela day tours include the Tintoreras islets activity, there you will snorkel next to Puerto Villamil town (Isabela’s “capital”) and you will probably see some penguins and reef sharks. Personally, I would suggest you speak to the Galápagos Dreams travel agency and tell them you’d prefer to go to Los Túneles instead of Tintoreras Islets, for there you can see amazing underwater lava structures and wildlife.

They can probably organize it and you pay a little more (the Los Tuneles tour is more expensive and far away than Tintoreras, but is so worth it). If you don’t have the time or don’t want to bother here are a couple of Isabela days tours you can book from Santa Cruz.

8. floreana island - full day.

The Floreana Island Tour is the most mysterious and at the same time beautiful tour, you can do on the Galapagos Islands. From tales of piracy, an Austrian baroness and her love trio, a crazy German toothless doctor, and murder this island has it all.

This tour has to be done with an agency or you can alternatively take a boat to Floreana island and spend multiple days there, as there is some infrastructure on the island (not like in Bartolomé Island where you can only visit it on a tour).

The name of the island comes from Ecuador’s first president Juan José Flores, whose administration officially recognized the Galapagos islands as part of Ecuador’s territory. Previously the island was called Charles island (after King Charles II of England) and Santa Maria island (one of Columbus’s caravels). Floreana is the 4th and last island with human settlements in the Galápagos archipelago.

9. PLAZAS ISLETS - FULL DAY

These are two of the many uninhabited islets in the Galápagos. They were formed by an uplift of the seabed giving it its flat but very unique shape. They are located on the northeastern side of Santa Cruz island.

The visit is in the cha nnel between the North and South Plaza islets, in the part where the islet slopes a little towards the water. There are many opuntia cacti and very beautiful red low-ground vegetation. On this tour, you will see many iguanas, s wallow-tailed gulls, and blue-footed boobies. You end up on the tour snorkeling at Punta Carrion where you will see a plenitude of marine life.

To book this tour:  Check the local company  Galapagos Dreams’s website , or book it online on Viator here: Day Trip to South Plaza Island from Puerto Ayora

10. SANTA FÉ ISLAND - FULL DAY

Santa Fé is one of the biggest islands in the Galapagos and it’s located just 20 km away from Santa Cruz. For that reason, it’s usually part of the daily tours in Santa Cruz. The island is known for its large colony of sea lions that live on the two beaches and its giant opuntia cacti.

You will probably find the endemic Santa Fé island land iguanas (yellow colored), blue-footed boobies, frigatebirds, and other seabirds. After the walk, you can snorkel from the boat and spot amazing marine life. If you’re interested there are also pure snorkeling and scuba diving tours to Santa Fé.

To book this tour: Check the local company Macarron Scuba Diver’s website, or book it online on Viator with any of the tours underneath:

Next, you’ll visit a remote white sand beach inhabited by sea lions, and enjoy snorkeling with sea turtles, sharks, rays, and possibly penguins. Then, stroll through Isabela Island’s wetlands, spotting Galapagos flamingos, birds, and marine iguanas.

Blue footed booby birds

3. Santa Fe Island Day Trip: Snorkeling and Fishing

Take a look at this unforgettable tour to Santa Fe Island . It’s a prime snorkeling destination in the Galapagos. A short 45-55 minutes boat ride brings you to this tranquil bay with beautiful turquoise waters that resemble a natural swimming pool.

Dive into the water to encounter sea lions, as the lively and playful younger ones join snorkelers, creating a one-of-a-kind interaction. Beyond the sea lions, the underwater world in the Galapagos is filled with sea turtles, sharks, tropical fish, and eagle rays.

The birdlife is abundant too, with sightings of blue-footed boobies, frigate birds, mockingbirds, and possibly even the Galapagos hawk. The island’s unique landscape contrasts the turquoise waters with dark lava rocks, cacti, and a white sand beach filled with sea lions.

After a delicious lunch, you’ll disembark at Hidden Beach, a quite stretch of white sand. Here, you can unwind, swim, or take a guided discovery walk to spot marine iguanas, pelicans, and mangroves. The return journey even offers the chance to try your hand at fishing from the boat. It’s a full day at Santa Fe!

4. Pinzon Island Day Trip: Snorkeling & Fishing

Set off on an exciting tour to Pinzon Island . Here you’ll have the chance to snorkel at one of Galapagos’ most breathtaking spots, revealing a mostly untouched underwater world.

Enjoy either two snorkeling sessions or one extended session, starting in a natural swimming pool before venturing into deeper blue waters. The water is teeming with diverse species, like sharks, sea turtles, rays, marine iguanas, and more.

As the second part of the tour, you’ll have the option for another snorkeling activity at La Fé or embark on a wet landing at La Fé Bay or Las Palmitas Bay.

The tour to Pinzon Island from Santa Cruz also offers a chance for fishing. The goal being to catch the prized yellowfin tuna. A hot and freshly prepared lunch or ceviche will be served onboard, making for a satisfying and memorable day.

5. Bartolome Island & Sullivan Bay Day Trip

Prepare for an exciting day trip to Bartolome Island from Santa Cruz! You’ll be picked up early at your hotel lobby and head to the Itabaca Channel. A comfy bus will take you to the channel, about a 40-minute ride.

Then, set sail to Bartolome Islet, a boat ride of 2-3 hours, depending on currents. Once Bartolome Islet is reached, you’ll disembark and hike around a volcanic cone to its summit. Enjoy taking in the stunning panoramic view alongside the iconic pinnacle.

After hiking, savor a delicious lunch on the boat before heading to the next stop, Sullivan Bay. Sullivan Bay is located just southeast of Santiago Island. Here you’ll disembark and explore the area which features cool geological formations.

Get ready for a 45-minute snorkeling adventure, where you might spot sea and land birds, fur seal colonies, and unique marine iguanas adapted to the terrain. As the day winds down, return to the Itabaca Channel and be transported back to Puerto Ayora.

6. Floreana Island Day Trip: Snorkeling and Fishing

Perhaps one of my favorites was discovering the remote island of Floreana Island. Tucked in the southern reaches of the archipelago, a day tour to Floreana Island from Santa Cruz is a must.

Despite being the least populated inhabited island in the Galapagos, with only around 150 residents, the day trip won’t take us to the inhabited part, but instead, to the beautiful Islet Enderby.

Here, you’ll cruise through a beautifully untouched corner of the archipelago, sharing space with sea lions and diverse bird species, including frigate birds, nazca boobies, blue-footed boobies, petrels, and pelicans.

The adventure continues with a snorkeling session amid sea turtles, tropical fish, sea lions, and possibly rays and sharks. For those interested, you can try your hand at fishing with the chance to catch the ever-famous yellow-fin tuna.

Then you’ll disembark at Cormorant Point to the uninhabited part of Floreana Island. Following your naturalist guide, you’ll walk to a viewpoint offering stunning views of a lagoon inhabited by flamingos and framed by Floreana’s two tuff lava cones.

The journey continues to Flour Sand Beach, which is composed of coral. It’s the ideal spot to observe pelicans, sea lions, sea turtles, and other captivating wildlife. While en route to or from Floreana, you’ll pass the iconic Devil’s Crown, a partially submerged volcanic crater resembling a crown.

Iguana in the Galapagos Islands

7. Scuba Diving at Gordon Rocks Day Trip

If you’re a scuba diver, diving at Gordon Rocks is one of the best day trips from Santa Cruz Island. You won’t want to miss it. On this thrilling scuba tour from Santa Cruz, you’ll experience the underwater marvels of Gordon Rocks, one of the Galapagos Islands’ premier dive sites.

Depart from Puerto Ayora on a scenic boat ride to Santa Cruz’s northeast side. This is where the famous Gordon Rocks is located. With your guide by your side, you’re free to explore the subterranean world. While marine life may vary, keep your eyes open for hammerhead sharks, barracudas, and eagle rays in their natural habitat. (It was my first time seeing hammerheads in the wild!)

With a small group, limited to eight participants, this dive trip offers an intimate, and safe, experience. You’ll also be served lunch onboard the boat. What are you waiting for? Get ready to experience the Galapagos Islands under the sea.

Music | Bay Area arts: 10 cool shows and concerts to catch this weekend

East Bay Cajun/Zydeco musician Andre Thierry is among the performers in the Concord Music & Market concert series.

Free tunes in Concord

It’s getting to be that time of the year when lovers of free live outdoor music can find it all over the place. And no, we’re not talking about the guy who’s trying to master “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” on the banjo near your neighborhood drugstore. We’re talking about the network of talented Bay Area cover bands and rock, folk, jazz and world music acts that perform for free in parks and other public venues through the spring, summer and fall.

One of our favorite free concert series kicks off this week at Concord’s Todos Santos Plaza, at Willow Pass Road and Grant Street. The Music & Market Concert Series offers a nice one-two punch in that a lively farmers’ market runs at the Plaza from 4-8 p.m., and the concerts take place from 6:30-8 p.m. Performing June 6 is Andre Thierry, the Richmond born-and-raised accordionist who serves up a spicy blend of Louisiana Cajun and Zydeco music. Others on the 2024 Music & Market lineup include the Earth, Wind & Fire-loving band the Houserockers (June 13), Sacred Fire Band delivering the music of Santana (June 20), Guitar master Roy Rogers and the Delta Rhythm Kings, one of the best blues bands going (July 11), the popular all-women Led Zeppelin tribute band Zepparella (July 18), the Steely Dan/Chicago cover band Aju Vu (Aug. 8), the all-women Aerosmith tribute band RagDolls (Aug. 22), and heck, there’s even a Taylor Swift tribute band in the mix, Twist on Taylor (Sept. 12).

Details: Series runs through Sept. 26 (no show July 4); all concerts free; cityofconcord.org .

Stage picks: ‘Company,’ ‘Scoundrels’

Here are two new shows Bay Area stage fans should know about.

Details: Through June 29; Orpheum Theatre, San Francisco; $55-$148; www.broadwaysf.com.

“Dirty Rotten Scoundrels”: The concept of a comedy about two charismatic conmen on the French Riviera competing to swindle a woman out of her savings seems irresistible, which would explain why it has spawned two movies (1964’s “Bedtime Story” and 1988’s “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels”) and a stage musical that opened on Broadway two decades ago and is getting a revival by San Jose Stage. Starring Keith Pinto, Ashley Garlick and Jonathan Rhys Williams, and directed by Johnny Moreno, the production opens this week and runs through June 30.

Details: Performances at San Jose Stage; $34-$74; www.thestage.org.

Celebrating Stephen Sondheim

Composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim remains a legend in musical theater whose impact on Broadway and American culture can’t be overstated. His clever and tuneful works helped Broadway address a deeper, broader array of subjects and emotions, which is partly why he scored eight Tony Awards, eight Grammy Awards, an Oscar and a Pulitzer Prize. But with his deep catalog of songs and musicals continuing to play on stages across the country, is there a need for a brand new show about him and incorporating his works? The folks at TheatreWorks Silicon Valley certainly think so. The company has a deep connection to Sondheim, having presented more works by him than any other composer or playwright over its 54-year history. And this week, TheatreWorks is presenting the world premiere of “Being Alive: A Sondheim Celebration,” a musical revue in which, as organizers put it, “Sondheim’s profound understanding of the human heart takes center stage.” With musicals such as “Into the Woods,” “A Little Night Music,” “Sunday in the Park with George,” “Sweeney Todd,” “Company,” “Pacific Overtures,” “Merrily We Roll Along” and more to choose from, this new revue by former TheatreWorks artistic director Robert Kelley and his longtime collaborator William Liberatore will no doubt be packed with musical theater classics that will have patrons humming as they leave the theater. And that’s why we go to musicals, isn’t it?

Details: In previews through June 6, main run is June 8-30; Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts; $27-$82; theatreworks.org.

Classical picks: ‘Erwartung,’ ‘Notre Dame’

From a 14th-century masterwork to a riveting 20th century drama, this week brings opportunities to hear rare performances. Here are two events music lovers won’t want to miss.

Opera at the Symphony:  The San Francisco Symphony welcomes director Peter Sellars and soprano Mary Elizabeth Williams in the Symphony’s first performances of Arnold Schoenberg’s “Erwartung,” about a woman who walks into the woods and finds herself in an unexpectedly dark situation. Conducted by music director Esa-Pekka Salonen, the program also includes Ravel’s “Ma Mére l’Oye” (Mother Goose), featuring dancers from Alonzo King’s LINES Ballet.

Details: 7:30 Friday and Saturday; 2 p.m. Sunday; Davies Symphony Hall, San Francisco; $39-$160; sfsymphony.org.

Early Mass:  14th-century French composer Guillaume de Machaut, a master of the ars nova style in late Medieval music, wrote his magnum opus in the “Messe de Notre Dame.” With singers from the San Francisco-based men’s chorus Chanticleer joining the early music outfit Alkemie, the work receives three performances this weekend, including one as part of the 18th biennial Berkeley Festival and Exhibition.

Details: 7:30 p.m. Friday at Grace Cathedral, San Francisco ($20-$63); 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Mission Santa Clara $25-$63); 7 p.m. Sunday at First Congregational Church, Berkeley (pay what you can); chanticleer.org.

Cowboy Junkies ride back to Bay Area

The Cowboy Junkies — long one of the best bands in all of popular music — are riding back into the Bay Area to perform multiple concerts.

The sensational country-folk-rock act, consisting of vocalist Margo Timmins, guitarist-songwriter Michael Timmins, drummer Peter Timmins and bassist Alan Anton, are still touring in support of “Such Ferocious Beauty.”

That 2023 outing was a fantastic album — which, really, shouldn’t surprise anybody given that that’s really the only type of albums the Cowboy Junkies put out. The list of the band’s previous winners includes such ferocious beauties as 1996’s “Lay It Down,” 2001’s “Open” and 2018’s “All That Reckoning.”

Of course, the group remains best known for its transcendent sophomore effort, 1988’s “The Trinity Session,” which was highlighted by the moving original composition “Misguided Angel” and the all-time great cover of the Velvet Underground classic “Sweet Jane.”

The band’s current tour includes five Bay Area venues: today at the Guild Theatre in Menlo Park; Saturday at the Rio Theatre in Santa Cruz; Sunday and Wednesday at Bimbo’s 365 Club in San Francisco; and June 13 at Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley.

Details: Visit cowboyjunkies.com for details on all dates.

It takes a (Little) Village

Veteran blues keyboardist Jim Pugh is known for his years of performing with the Robert Cray band and other outfits, but his most lasting contribution to music might be the non-profit record label he created, Little Village. Now a decade old, Little Village has served as the home and launching pad for a variety of talented musicians who dwell in the kind of Americana genres – blues, folk, gospel, etc. – that the mainstream record industry doesn’t pay much attention to these days. If you’re wondering what contemporary takes on these genres sound like, head to the Freight & Salvage in Berkeley on Friday for the annual Little Village concert showcase (dubbed the “Freight Mini-Fest”). The lineup includes Aki Kumar, the “Bollywood Blues” harmonica player; the acclaimed traditional gospel outfit Sons of the Soul Revivers; the Filipino folk trio The Sampaguitas; The Latin/blues singer Marina Crouse, and singer-songer Genesis Fermin playing with veteran singer-producer Vicki Randle. Hosting the show will be well-known Bay Area singer-songwriter Maurice Tani, who’s worked and recorded with Little Village for years. The show promises to be a rollicking affair and a reminder that American roots music is still going strong – you just need to know where to look for it.

Details: 8 p.m.; $25 ($23 for seniors and $12.50 for patrons 21 and under; thefreight.org

A combo concert

Those of us who like our Mother Goose nursery tales served up with a little visual and audio assist are in for a treat this weekend, as San Francisco treasure Alonzo King has choreographed the Ravel ballet “Ma mére l’Oye” for his LINES Ballet dancers to perform with the San Francisco Symphony in Davies Hall.

The music, which dates to 1912, was first a piano suite for four hands and then an orchestral suite before the composer produced the final ballet, which animates such favorite characters as the Sleeping Beauty, Tom Thumb and Beauty and the Beast. Also on the program, conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen, is Arnold Schoenberg’s monodrama “Ewartung,” with staging by renowned theater director Peter Sellars and featuring soprano Mary Elizabeth Williams taking on the role of the desperate woman searching for her lover in a dark forest at night.

Details: 7:30 p.m. June 7-8, 2 p.m. June 9; Davies Symphony Hall, San Francisco; $69-$169; sfsymphony.org.

A night of Slavic songs

Slavyanka, the 45-year-old San Francisco-based chorus which took its name from the old Russian name for California’s Russian River, is presenting a highly unusual concert of songs composed by women from Russia, Serbia, Ukraine and Bulgaria in three Bay Area venues this weekend. The program, titled “Songs of Faith, Love and Delight,” will be conducted by artistic director Irina Shachneva and will feature works by Russian-Belarusian composer Irina Denisova, Serbian composers Dragana Velickovic and Ljubica Maric´, Ukrainian Iryna Aleksiychuk and the Bulgarian-British composer Dobrinka Tabakova. The first concert takes place at 8 p.m. June 7 in St. Mark’s Church in Berkeley, with repeats at 4 p.m. June 8 in Palo Alto’s First Congregational Church and 4 p.m. June  9 at Star of the Sea Church at 4420 Geary Blvd. in San Francisco.

Details: Tickets available at slavyankachorus.org; free admission to those under 18.
