Grand tourers aim to provide the best of what the car world has to offer—the greatest luxury, the highest performance, and the most beautiful styling. Here are some of the greatest GT cars out there.

Ferrari 456

First sold in America in 1995, the 456 is a traditionalist's grand touring car, a front-engine V-12 Ferrari with seating for four. We tested this $225,000 executive transport by racing it across Texas against a similarly priced Mooney airplane. It lost, but not by much. Rated at 436 horsepower, the 5.2-liter V-12 sings delightfully up to the car's top speed of 186 mph. We'd go for the six-speed manual, but there's a four-speed automatic (GTA) for the comfort-oriented, who will find the leather-lined interior and cockpit-adjustable suspension alluring. The 456M (modificata) had only six more horsepower, an updated interior, and mild styling tweaks when it arrived for 1998; it was replaced by the 612 Scaglietti in 2004. For this exercise in spendthrift Ferrari ownership, we looked at a '97. When Hagerty said the average value was only $41,000 and a superb example would still be under $60,000, we hopped over to the NADA price guide, which reported that last year the low retail price observed was $43,900, the high price was $73,800, and the average was $53,000. Nice.

Chevrolet Corvette

2020 mid engine corvette

On the surface, you might not think the Corvette would make for a good GT car. It has just two seats, and sports-car focus. But really, thanks to comfortable magnetic ride suspension, a massive trunk, and torquey V-8, it's great on long trips. This one's up for bidding on eBay.

The M6 is basically a two-door version of the wonderful M5, meaning it gets the same powerful engine and fantastic driving dynamics. The last-gen model shown here even has a V-10 engine. Here's one with a rare manual transmission you can own now.

Bentley Continental GT

The Continental GT is all-new for 2019, with a restyled body and a 626-horsepower W-12 engine, or a 550-hp V-8. It looks great, and drives as well as you'd expect. This used example is barely broken-in, and you can own it today.

Ford Mustang GT

The Mustang has come a long way from its crude muscle car beginnings. It's a truly fun car to drive in all environments, whether it be the track, the drag strip, or the street. And because it has four seats, you don't have to compromise much. Here's a brand-new one you can own right now.

Ferrari 812 Superfast

Ferrari's front-engined V-12 family of cars is a lineage of fantastic daily-drivable machines, all with massive power and the great sounds you expect from something with a Ferrari badge. The 812 Superfast is the latest from Maranello. This one's painted in a lovely shade of black, and you can own it.

The McLaren GT is named appropriately, as it's one of the most comfort-minded cars to come out of Woking. There's ample luggage space, a more compliant suspension, and a new infotainment system to make sure occupants are as satisfied as possible. Here's one with just 44 miles on the clock for sale now.

Ferrari GTC4Lusso

The GTC4Lusso is currently Ferrari's most practical car, with all-wheel drive and four usable seats. It also has enough luggage space for long journeys thanks to that sweet shooting brake design. This one's painted in a lovely shade of white, and you can own it.

The XJS can be found for relatively low prices on the used market thanks to their reputation for unreliability. But if you're willing to put up with that, you'll get a wonderful V-12-powered GT experience. Here's one up for bidding on eBay now.

Aston Martin Vanquish

Aston's first Vanquish remains one of the prettiest cars the company has ever put out, complimented by that wonderful V-12 soundtrack. And if you're not a fan of the automatic transmission, you can send it back to the UK to have the factory put a manual transmission in. This one's for sale on eBay right now for just $70,000.

Aston Martin DBS Superleggera

If you'd rather have something a bit more modern from Aston Martin, consider the DBS Superleggera. It's the most capable front-engine production car on offer from the brand right now, with 715 horsepower from a twin-turbo V-12 under the hood. This one only has 1500 miles on the odometer, and it's for sale.

Rolls-Royce Wraith

While the Wraith is undoubtedly more full-on luxury machine than performance-oriented grand-tourer, it still deserves a spot on this list. It's the sportiest car in Rolls-Royce's lineup, packing a twin-turbo V-12 making an impressive 624 horsepower. Here's one painted in purple for sale now.

The RS 7 isn't exactly a two-door coupe, but its grand touring intentions are just as pure as any other car on this list. It provides massive power paired with loads of tech and comfort features, plus an all-wheel drive system than can get you through pretty much anything. And it looks cool as hell.

Porsche 928

The 928 was originally meant to replace the 911, coming as a strong departure from Porsche's original formula. The 928 used a front-mounted, water-cooled V-8 sending power to a rear transaxle. Thankfully, the 911 persevered , but we love the 928's decidedly 1980s style. This early manual-equipped model is in great condition, and it can be yours.

Porsche 911

Of course, the 911 has always been a great all-rounder worthy of being on this list. It's comfortable enough to drive everyday, supremely luxurious, and plenty capable around your favorite back road. Here's a used 2020 model up for grabs on eBay now.

Maserati GranTurismo

The GranTurismo has been around for more than a decade, nearly unchanged from when it first hit showrooms in 2007. With a Ferrari-designed V-8 and stellar looks, it remains one of the most stylish new cars you can own. Over 10 years later, it's still being built, and the refreshed models look great . If you're willing to brave the maintenance costs, older models can now be had for under $30,000 .

Jaguar E-Type

You can't mention Grand Touring cars without bringing up the Jaguar E-Type. It's become an icon in the classic car world, sought after by collectors for its fantastic design and wonderful driving elements. You can own this British racing green Series I model today.

Mercedes-Benz SL

For decades, the Mercedes SL has occupied a corner in the company's lineup as a two-seater GT perfect for long drives and top-down fun. Nowadays, cars like the S-Class convertible and AMG GT convertible offer similar top-down joy, but we still love the SL. This AMG SL63 has just 8100 miles on the clock, and it can be yours.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe

If you need a bit more space in your Mercedes-badged GT car, the bigger S-Class is a perfect SL alternative. Available in coupe or convertible form, it's perfectly suited to cruise without a fuss for hours in endless comfort. This S63 model is for sale right now online.

Lexus LC500

Though the LC500 uses Lexus's 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V-8, it's designed to be an all-around daily driver with a goal of comfort and satisfaction behind the wheel. The result is one of Lexus's best cars ever. Here's a beautiful blue model you can own now.

Best GT cars 2024 - our favourite grand tourers

Whether it’s a cross-continent drive or attacking a mountain pass when you get there, a great gt car remains impossible to beat for such a task.

best grand tour cars 2022

Few modern cars have quite so much appeal as the traditional grand tourer. They might seem old fashioned in our current ecosystem of EVs , SUVs , and do (almost) everything supercars but with the GT’s heritage comes a regality that few other car types inherit.

Essentially, the GT has a simple mantra: to transport its occupants in supreme comfort, speed and style, while remaining capable when the roads get interesting. Simple though it might seem, this is a hard balance to reach, and while many might skew in one direction or another, all must be able to achieve both of these key roles.

Aston Martin DB12 eCoty

They bring up grand notions of racing down to the south of France in time for a late sitting at your favourite ocean-side restaurant, but in reality a GT’s true capability can be just as much enjoyed on the M25 as the Autoroute du Soleil.

The two-door coupe form which once defined the GT is no longer a prerequisite, so too the need to be powered by a twelve cylinder engine or drive to be purely to the rear wheels. So in our 2024 list, our favourite GTs come in all sorts of different forms, each with their own distinct personality, yet the same fundamental ability of transporting people at great speed and comfort.

These are our favourite modern-age GTs, whether they be a traditional coupe, sleek saloon, EV or even an SUV.

  • Ferrari Roma  review

Ferrari has long been a key manufacturer of the traditional grand tourer, so it’s no surprise to discover few modern GTs hit quite the same notes as the Roma. This V8-powered two-plus-two coupe comes with elegant restrained styling and a dynamic repertoire that makes it as brilliant to drive on a challenging road as it is munching through hundreds of motorway miles.

First launched in 2020, the Roma was a brand new addition to the Ferrari range, combining the hardware and aluminium-intensive chassis derived from the Portofino with a sleek coupe body. Ferrari also used the Roma to introduce its next generation interior design and digital interfaces, dominated by a highly-configurable curved screen ahead of the driver paired to a new portrait-aspect screen in the centre of the dash.

The Roma’s powered by Ferrari’s twin-turbocharged 90-degree 3.9-litre V8, here producing 560lb ft of torque between 3000 and 5750, with a peak of 611bhp taking over from 5750 to the 7500rpm redline. This, combined with Ferrari’s clever e-differential and an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission mounted on the rear axle gives the Roma an impressive 3.4sec 0-62mph time, also breaking the ten second barrier to 124mph at 9.3sec.

With a Spider  version recently added to the Roma family and Ferrari's replacement for the GT4C Lusso now the V12-engined (not an) SUV Purosangue , the Roma is Ferrari's most traditional GT car. One of the best, too.

Bentley Continental GT Mulliner W12 – front tracking

  • Bentley Continental GT review

If you’re after a GT car with a greater emphasis on luxury, few can rival Bentley and its beguiling Continental GT. Available in coupe and convertible body styles, and with V8 and for the time being with W12 powertrains, the Continental GT took a major leap forward in its current generation, introducing a new platform co-developed by Porsche that has enhanced both its driving dynamics and refinement.

Dynamically, the 542bhp V8 model is the sweeter to drive with less weight over the nose and a baritone rumble from under the vast bonnet, but for the full experience the 626bhp W12-powered Speed is hard to ignore and one to saviour while you still can.

Emphasising its place at the top of the range, the Speed features an electronically-controlled locking rear differential that, alongside an active anti-roll system and monster carbon ceramic brakes, makes it amazingly capable over challenging roads. Although it lacks the V8's agility and enthusiasm.

Yet the Continental GT isn’t really about on-the-limit handling, rather its ability to embrace the driver at any speed. Its superb refinement, exceptional ride quality, total insulation from the outside and beautifully finished interior make it one of motoring’s great experiences to effortlessly thunder across vast distances

Roma GT test – LC action

  • Lexus LC500 Coupe review

The Lexus LC does luxury Japanese style, which means despite having a significant downstep in power and performance compared to its European rivals, its naturally-aspirated V8 engine focuses on charisma and precision. It responds instantly to every squeeze of the accelerator and makes an intoxicating induction howl as you rev it – one painstakingly honed by Toyota’s long-standing partnership with Yamaha.

This distinctive dynamic character is then reflected in the way the LC500 looks and feels from within the cabin. Even five years after its launch, the LC looks like nothing else on the road, with a combination of concept car-like detailing and stunning proportions. It’s also built to an incredibly high standard, with a tangible precision in its build that permeates the whole car.

It’s not as fast as most rivals, doesn’t have cutting edge technology, nor is quite as ultimately variable in its character but the LC500 feels like a mechanical watch in a world of smartwatches – a unique entity and one we dearly hope doesn’t go away any time soon. We suspect that it will stick around for a while, considering that Lexus has continued to fine hone and tweak the LC500 throughout its life – culminating in the flagship Ultimate Edition this year

Aston Martin DB12 – drift

Aston Martin DB12

  • Aston Martin DB1 2 review

To mark the dawn of its Lawrence Stroll-led era, Aston Martin has carved a new, stronger identity with a GT car that blends elegance with serious bite and poise. The DB12 may look similar to the DB11 that came before it, but Aston Martin has reworked it to the core to provide a fundamentally different driving experience; and it's one we like a lot at evo .

Aston's twin-turbo V12 has been ousted due to emissions regulations, but the uprated AMG V8 in the nose of the DB12 fulfils its role beautifully. Delivering a rich exhaust note and 671bhp to the rear wheels, it's refined and flexible but deceptively potent when you open it up. There's serious performance on offer here, and the DB12 feels more exciting than even the sharpened DB11 AMR.

With extra bracing in its chassis and a far more reactive chassis setup, the DB12 feels tauter and more controlled, too. There's an alertness, an agility to the new car that the DB11 – for all its suppleness and refinement – simply can't match, and it moves the Aston right into battle with the likes of the Ferrari Roma.

A heavily revamped interior rounds off the series of enhancements. Gone is the fiddly HMI system borrowed from old Mercedes models, and in comes a far more intuitive and feature rich touchscreen nestled within a redesigned dashboard. All of the touchpoints now have a crisp, quality feel that's befitting of a £185,000 Aston Martin, which certainly wasn't the case before.

Mercedes-AMG GT 63 – front

  • Mercedes-AMG GT review

The latest Mercedes-AMG SL didn't exactly fill us with hope as a precursor to the new, closely related AMG GT. The SL has been repositioned as a more practical, four-seat roadster that also happens to be a sports car, but the result is a confused, misaligned package that we haven't quite gelled with; so much so that it came last at evo  Car of the Year in 2022.

But the AMG GT is different. Despite riding on the same platform and using the same fundamental powertrain, it feels more focused and tightly defined as a usable everyday sports car, one that – from our first drive abroad at least – will give the Porsche 911 Turbo a serious headache.

With a 577bhp 4-litre twin-turbo V8 and four-wheel drive, the range-topping GT 63 hits very hard indeed; 62mph comes up in just 3.2sec, and the top speed isn't far shy of 200mph. But the AMG GT has always been quick, and it's the extra sharpness and composure of the new model that really moves the game on – despite it being more usable than ever.

Select Comfort mode and the new GT presents you with a fluid, compliant character that's more mellow than before, and ratcheting up to Sport+ brings extra snap to the engine response and tightens up the damping, although not to the extent that the GT feels overly stiff or uncouth. We wish the V8 was a little more vocal and present inside the cabin, but the AMG GT is now more flexible and technically impressive than ever.

best grand tour cars 2022

While Porsche doesn’t strictly offer a traditional two-door grand tourer in its range (the last being the 928), the Panamera has been doing an excellent job of filling that role with its two extra doors over two generations now. The current model – due for a heavy update in 2024 – is a supreme example of Porsche's engineering prowess.

The second Panamera was developed on a platform that’s shared by the Continental GT and Flying Spur, capable of packaging some serious chassis hardware into its considerable footprint. Yet despite sharing many parts under the skin, the Porsche takes a more variable approach to its variants, with both hatchback and Sport Turismo models paired to a range of V6 and V8 powertrains with or without plug-in hybrid modules.

Our favourite is the GTS, a mid-range V8-powered model without any electrification elements and the most dynamic focus. It might not have the numbers of a Turbo or Turbo S – it makes do with a relatively conservative 473bhp – but the GTS makes use of every one of them, and does so with an attitude and feedback missing in more elaborately specified siblings.

Without the added weight of a plug-in module and a more natural, nuanced balance, the GTS has all the appeal of a genuine sports saloon, one that makes a fine grand tourer.

Porsche Taycan header

  • Porsche Taycan review

If a four-door Porsche being on this list of best GTs felt like a controversial addition, here’s another: the all-electric Taycan. To say we’ve been critical of EVs might be a reasonable statement, but none have changed our perception of them quite as resolutely as the Taycan.

Since its initial debut in 2019, the Taycan has diversified to nearly as many variants as a 911, with three body styles – a Sport Turismo estate and high-riding Cross Turismo have joined the existing saloon – joined by more recent updates to the Taycan 4 and 4S. The range has also been joined by the GTS that once again has proved to be the most deft balance between raising its capability without needing to rely on feel-sapping chassis augmentation tech.

The most remarkable thing about the Taycan is that beyond just being fast and capable, it also drives with the same finesse and attention to detail that defines all Porsches. This is felt through the steering, chassis balance and impressive damping, helping disguise its 2295kg mass like few rivals.

Of course as a GT, the Taycan is compromised by its relatively limited range, which compared to larger rivals can only muster a range of 315 miles in its most efficient form in a best case scenario. Still, despite the romance of a GT being based around long-distance cruising across national borders, the reality is that most daily driving is much shorter, making the Taycan an ideal daily driver for those who want to adopt EV technology without giving up a Porsche-like driving experience.

Audi e-tron GT quattro – front cornering

Next up on our list is another EV, one that’s closely related to the Porsche Taycan above only with even more of a grand touring nature. It says so in the name, but it’s worth remembering that the Audi e-tron GT lives up to it with a superb combination of excellent comfort, refinement and the ability to drive almost as well as the more dynamically-focused Porsche Taycan.

The Audi’s range is more restrained, with only two powertrain options in a single body style. This is made up of the base e-tron GT that comes with 523bhp, and the top-spec RS e-tron GT, that has up to 636bhp. Both have the same larger 93.4kWh battery pack as higher-specification Taycans with up to 305 miles of range.

To drive, the Audi takes a more languid approach to its dynamics, highlighted by softer springs (air or coil) and dampers, much lighter steering and more relaxed rates for its anti-roll bars (again, adaptive or static).

Over long distances, the Audi generally impresses, and while it lacks the ultimate dynamic sparkle of the Taycan is in most cases the more relaxing to drive long distances. With a pre-organised route with a consistent set of high-speed charging points along the way, the e-tron GT makes for a brilliant grand tourer.

Maserati GranTurismo Trofeo – front cornering

  • Maserati GranTurismo review

The clue's in the name. The Maserati GranTurismo taps into the firm's legacy as a maker of achingly gorgeous, fast, sumptuous and engaging GT cars, picking up where the MC20 left off as one of the finest models of its type.

In its final years, the last-gen GranTurismo  withered against more advanced and more capable rivals from Aston Martin and Bentley , but from a purely visual standpoint, it remained hard to beat. Thankfully, the new GranTurismo carries forward much of its design DNA, but the beneath the skin is a car transformed.

The top-spec Trofeo version generates 542bhp from its MC20-derived twin-turbo V6, hurling from 0-62mph in 3.5sec and on to a 199mph top speed. But even when you aren't exercising the engine to test those claims, the GranTurismo feels beautifully engineered and indulgent – particularly now that the cabin feels truly special with exceptional fit and finish.

Switch to Corsa mode and in a blink, the character changes dramatically. The V6 takes on a harder, sharper character and the GranTurismo flows with wonderful precision. The four-wheel drive system is beautifully judged to provide security without strangling adjustability, and it feels a match for the latest and greatest GTs out there. Maserati is well and truly back on form.

Need speed in a phenomenally comfortable car on a really long journey? Deploy the GT

best grand tour cars 2022

For Top Gear magazine's 300th issue, we celebrated the best 50 cars over 299 issues: here's our pick of the best Grand Tourers

The Grand Tourer. It works as a phrase as well as a class of car, which has always been the point, really. It evokes memories of romantic poets sighing by Alpine lakes, of moustachioed, plus-four- clad Edwardian adventurers, of Renaissance paintings carted back to stately homes. No wonder brands such as Bentley and Aston Martin still define themselves – and are defined by – their adherence to the GT code. Comfortable. Fast. Expensive. Refined. Nothing’s changed in 300 issues.

At least as far as the brief goes. What has changed is the democratisation of the class. Mass-market manufacturers are forever trying to take themselves upmarket. Throughout the Nineties, the received way of doing this was to build yourself a ‘luxury’ coupe. Ford, Renault, Vauxhall, Volvo, Honda – they were all at it. The best of them was the Pininfarina-designed Peugeot 406 Coupe. It looked beautiful, came with a super-smooth 3.0-litre V6 and rode like Peugeots used to.

best grand tour cars 2022

The trouble was that others didn’t do it as well (I give you the Vauxhall Calibra and Ford Cougar as evidence), and this all corresponded to a time when the real luxury brands weren’t doing it well, either. Aston and Bentley were both borderline basket cases when TG was a nipper, leaving the likes of the BMW 8 Series and Mercedes S500 Coupe to lead the way. Sure, Ferrari pitched the 550 Maranello into the mix and it was blisteringly good, but after the Sixties the Italians always tended to make their GTs too... thrusting. They still do.

What these pretenders to the throne all lacked was the necessary romanticism to do the job properly. It was only when the Bentley Conti GT and Aston Martin DB9 appeared in the early Noughties that the car market remembered that the GT was a great thing.

But by then it was too late – travel itself had been democratised. The destination was now the thing, not the journey. You’d find GTs outside the casino in Monte Carlo but no one could recall having seen them anywhere on the way down. They’d probably been on a truck.

Ironically, the growth of tourism was the death knell for the role of the GT, if not the class of car itself. The pleasure of exploration, of adventuring through the Alps, of barrelling foot-down, nose-up along the Route Napoleon had gone. Well, unless you were prepared to get up at dawn, but that’s for those who wear driving boots, not well-heeled types in loafers.

best grand tour cars 2022

Instead, what the GT does now is make the journey as effortless as possible, insulating you from the roofbox-and-caravan brigade. The best modern GTs are tech-laden, hushed, beautiful places to spend time, with sumptuous upholstery and effortless pace. Turbos have been the making of them, adaptive dampers have increased their breadth of ability, satnav has taken the stress out of directions. Mostly. The roads are busier, the speeds are lower, but a good GT is still the best way to cover a long distance in a short time with the most amount of pleasure.

Tesla Model S is among the New Luxury Cars which are Autocar's Picks for the Best Grand Tourers of 2022

These New Luxury Cars are Autocar’s Picks for the Best Grand Tourers of 2022

Luxury cars can make great Grand Tourers. They’re up to the task as long as they can comfortably conquer entire road systems. EVs aren’t out of the question anymore, either. These are some of the new luxury cars Autocar picks for the best grand tourers of 2022.

What makes a car a grand tourer?

A grand tourer (GT) used to involve a formula. A GT car was a comfortable luxury car, usually two-door, with a long hood, powerful engine, and enough luggage space to hit the open road. However, Autocar suggests that the term has evolved into a more vague and inclusive status. A modern GT car can be just about anything with sports, comfort, and road trip qualifications.

Porsche Panamera is a list-topping crowd favorite with a beloved badge

Porsche Panamera at an auto show

Porsche’s Panamera four-door sedan was controversial at first. However, Autocar claims that the updated design is much more pleasing to the eye. The refreshed generation two Panamera is still a powerful and comfortable choice for those people looking to take a Porsche on a trip. In addition to updated styling, the new Panamera is available a Turbo S variant. The Turbo S will get you there quickly using every bit of 621 horsepower from a twin-turbo V8.

If you’re looking for a greener Panamera, you can choose between a Turbo S E-Hybrid , the 4S E-Hybrid, and the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid. You will get a comfortable ride with sharp handling no matter which Panamera you pick. The Porsche Panamera line is a distance-smashing balance of performance and comfort worthy of the top of Autocar’s list.

BMW’s 8 Series Gran Coupé is a comfortable luxury car that is road trip ready

BMW 8 Series is a luxury car and grand tourer

The BMW 8 Series Gran Coupé offers swooping lines and plenty of options. For those in search of top performance from a GT car, the M8 Competition’s 616 brake horsepower will undoubtedly suffice. If a proper M car isn’t in the cards, the M850i will provide enough thrill with a turbocharged V8 powerplant. Finally, the 8 Series Gran Coupé is available with a twin-turbocharged straight-six cylinder engine. All of the 8 series vehicles offer all-wheel drive, four-wheel steering, and anti-roll suspension.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class is a car with evident pedigree

Mercedes-Benz E-Class is a luxury car and grand tourer

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class has been around for a long time now. That tenure should not put anyone off of the E-Class, though. The E-Class has continued to develop into a plush, relaxing driver environment with quality interior materials. Beyond comfort, Autocar finds the E-Class line of coupes and convertibles more at home on highways than carving corners.

Tesla Model S is up to the challenge of cruising some distance

Tesla Model S is among the New Luxury Cars which are Autocar's Picks for the Best Grand Tourers of 2022

Range anxiety is a genuine ailment for owners of EVs. However, with the increasing application of superchargers and the increasing range of EVs, the prospect of an electric road trip is exciting. Mind you, Autocar is approaching the subject of an EV road trip with Great Britain in mind, not the expanses of the American highway system.

However, the Tesla Model S is an impressive machine with intense acceleration and room for the whole family. Additionally, the latest iterations of the Model S are pushing past 400 and 500-mile ranges. If supercharging infrastructure becomes more ubiquitous in the United States, the Model S might be your EV road trip dream.

Maserati’s Quattroporte is a sinister four-door GT car ready to hit the highway

The new Maserati Quattroporte is bigger and badder than ever before. The Quattroporte is, despite the size, still a sharp handling attention-grabber. Autocar quickly points out that Maserati’s German counterparts are ahead in interior refinement and quality. However, the latest Quattroporte is still an excellent option for blasting down the road in comfort.

Luxury Cars make great Grand Tourers

In addition to the cars listed above, Autocar says the following luxury cars are the best grand tourers: the BMW M550i xDrive, Mercedes-Benz CLS, Kia Stinger GT S , Audi A7 Sportback, and Lexus LC. You’ll be long-distance cruising in style and comfort regardless of which of these cars you pick.

2022 Lucid Air Grand Touring Performance First Drive Review: Exactly as Advertised

The Lucid Air's top-level Grand Touring Performance trim stays true to its name with refined luxury, impressive range and a 1,050-horsepower punch.

Our Experts

best grand tour cars 2022

CNET’s expert staff reviews and rates dozens of new products and services each month, building on more than a quarter century of expertise.

It's easy to get all starry eyed over the Lucid Air, especially the new top-of-the-line Grand Touring and Grand Touring Performance models. Lucid's streamlined EV boasts as much as 1,050 horsepower, the promise of 516 miles of driving range and absolutely killer design. But spend a lot of time with the Air Grand Touring and you'll learn it's also a bona fide luxury flagship -- albeit one with a couple of quirks.

The Air GT and GTP pick up where the small-batch Dream Edition left off. Lucid's original Air was limited to just 520 units and made a whopping 1,111 hp. But while the GT and GTP are less powerful, the mechanical bits, chassis tuning and interior refinement are all the same. This is effectively the series-production version of Lucid's initial Air; the company just wanted to reserve that highest power output for its privileged first-round customers.

2022 Lucid Air Grand Touring Performance: High Power Meets High Style

best grand tour cars 2022

The Lucid Air is stunning. It looks like the future but clearly draws inspiration from a midcentury modern past. The Grand Touring has the same two-tone treatment as the Dream Edition with a rounded roofline and silver cap, though the body's color palette is sadly limited to one handsome shade of dark red or a handful of monochromatic hues (for now).

The Lucid's proportions are low, long and wide, giving it big curb appeal, though in reality, the Air is roughly the same size as a midsize sedan (think Honda Accord ). There's a lot of legroom for passengers front and rear, and the low roofline doesn't impede headroom as much as you might think. Personally, I'm torn on the clamshell trunk design, especially since the low load-in height is weird. But at least the trunk goes deep, with 22.1 cubic feet of storage space, plus an extra 10 cubic feet in the frunk under the hood.

Lucid has several interior color and material schemes named after different parts of California, where the company is based. The one in my test car is called Tahoe, with a two-tone black-and-tan Nappa leather get-up and carbon oak trim. The whole past/future design motif is apparent here, too, where the sophisticated cabin trimmings meet things like a continuous glass panel that makes up the windshield and roof, as well as a 34-inch curved housing that displays various car controls, the gauge cluster and the Air's infotainment system.

2022 Lucid Air Grand Touring Performance

The Air's interior feels as good as it looks.

But here's where you'll encounter some weird choices on Lucid's part. The volume toggle on the right side of the steering wheel works fine, but the center button that mutes the audio is way too sensitive, so you'll end up inadvertently cutting the jams a lot. Also, the steering column and mirror adjustments are found on the iPad-like center control screen, which feels like a solution to a problem that didn't exist (have we learned nothing from Tesla?). Worse yet, the screen is sometimes laggy, so you'll overshoot the mirror and wheel positions more often than not.

Honestly, the whole multimedia interface is slow and buggy, though during a visit to Lucid's service center in Millbrae, California, the company showed me an update that'll roll out over the air which addresses some of those issues. Still no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto , however, though Lucid says those are coming, too.

The quickest route from Lucid's Bay Area HQ to Los Angeles is the part of California you won't see on a postcard. The trip down the 5 freeway is dull as dishwater: Semi trucks pack the right lane and oblivious drivers hog the left, all while the faint smell of nearby cow pastures lingers in the air. It's a slog, yet it's also the perfect place for a supple luxury car with massaging seats and a kickin' stereo to crack its knuckles and say, "Relax, buddy, I've got this." In the Air GT, it's a piece of cake.

2022 Lucid Air Grand Touring Performance

Lucid absolutely nailed the Air Grand Touring's ride and handling balance. On 21-inch wheels wrapped in Pirelli P-Zero summer tires, the Air is super supple all of the time without sacrificing its surprisingly sharp reflexes (more on that in a minute). Lucid also did a great job quelling wind and road noise, which is especially important since EVs don't have the drone of an internal combustion engine to mask some of those unpleasantries. Throw in comfortable seats with heating, cooling and massage functions, a full suite of driver-assistance systems and instant electric torque for shooting past left-lane Prii, and that boring I-5 trek really isn't so bad.

Plus, the Lucid Air is one of the few EVs that can make the Bay-to-LA journey in one shot. The EPA estimates a 516-mile range for the Air Grand Touring on its base 19-inch wheels, or 469 if you go for the 21s. The more powerful (and heavier) Grand Touring Performance further reduces the range to 446 miles, though that's still a longer driving distance than any other new EV on sale today. Your bladder will require a pit stop long before the Lucid will, and since America's public charging infrastructure is still incredibly problematic , not having to deal with any of that crap is a luxury in and of itself.

2022 Lucid Air Grand Touring Performance

The two-tone look is so cool, as are the Performance's unique 21-inch wheels.

When you do have to plug in, you can take advantage of the most powerful DC fast chargers out there, since the Air's 900-volt architecture allows for charging speeds up to 300 kW. Strong regenerative braking also lets you recoup some energy on the go -- a boon for the steep downhill section of the I-5 Grapevine heading back into LA.

Performance

I'm actually glad my little subhed pun forced me to save the Air's performance specs for last. They're impressive, sure, but this car's premium angle is way more important. That the Air is so good as a luxury car is what really sticks with me most. That it's quick as hell and fun to drive is secondary, though nevertheless worth discussing.

The standard Grand Touring uses a 112-kilowatt-hour battery pack while the Performance has 118 kWh of capacity, and both cars have a dual-motor arrangement enabling all-wheel drive. Lucid rates the Air GT at a maximum 819 hp and 885 pound-feet of torque, allowing it to hit 60 mph in 3 seconds. The GTP increases power to 1,050 hp and 921 lb-ft, enabling it to hit 60 mph in 2.6 seconds through launch control, which is exactly as thrilling as it sounds.

2022 Lucid Air Grand Touring Performance

This iPad-like display is where you manage all of the Air's settings and controls, and you can tuck it into the dashboard when you don't need it, opening up a cubby for small objects.

An important disclaimer: Those power numbers are conditional. Specific to the GTP, when you're driving in the standard Smooth mode, the electric motors are putting out 754 hp and 737 lb-ft. Switching to Swift stiffens the adaptive dampers, adds some weight to the steering, and unlocks 799 lb-ft. But it's only in the full-on Sprint mode -- which requires an additional confirmation on the display before activation -- where you get 1,050 hp and 921 lb-ft.

Smooth, in addition to being a Grammy award-winning 1999 hit by Santana featuring Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20 off the multi-platinum album Supernatural , is going to be perfectly fine for 95% of Lucid Air GT use cases. But if you find yourself on a great road, like Skyline Drive in NorCal or Angeles Crest Highway near LA, hit up Swift or Sprint for a good time. Despite having a traditional suspension setup and no performance aids like torque vectoring or rear-axle steering, the Air freakin' scoots. The low center of gravity keeps it hunkered down with little body roll, and the weighty steering offers quick responses without darty tendencies. The Air is way more fun to drive than any Tesla, but the Porsche Taycan is still the benchmark in the class.

Comparing the GT against a GTP, the only real difference is acceleration, since the fundamental chassis tuning is the same. Do you need an extra 231 hp, 36 lb-ft and 0.4-second quicker acceleration time? Absolutely not. Do EV buyers like bragging rights? Holy crap, yes.

2022 Lucid Air Grand Touring Performance

Electric or not, the Lucid Air is a great luxury car.

Premium car, premium price

The Lucid Air Grand Touring and Grand Touring Performance are available to order now, and as you'd expect, they aren't cheap. The GT starts at $154,000 and the GTP comes in at $179,000, not including federal tax credits or an unknown destination charge. That makes the base GT a little more expensive than the new Mercedes-AMG EQS and way pricier than the Tesla Model S Plaid . Less-expensive Lucid Air models are expected to arrive before the end of the year, including a standard Touring and sub-$100,000 Pure.

Yes, Lucid has some teething issues with the Air Grand Touring, specifically some tech troubles and build-quality inconsistencies (don't look too closely at those panel gaps). Still, Lucid is getting much more right than wrong at this early stage, and if the Grand Touring Performance is proof of what this company can do right off the bat, then I can't wait to see what's next.

2022 Mercedes-Benz GT Overview

Is the mercedes-amg gt a good car.

Yes, the 2022 Mercedes-AMG GT is a great luxury sports sedan . The GT is agile and exciting to drive, whether you're carving up a canyon road or just taking the long way home, and its duo of turbocharged six-cylinder engines supplies plenty of punch. The well-built interior is stylish and jam-packed with the latest tech and driver assistance features. The front seats are comfy as well, though back-seat space is snug, and the GT offers an impressive amount of cargo room. That said, it isn't exactly a bargain at roughly $93,000 and up.

Should I Buy the Mercedes-AMG GT?

The AMG GT's blend of athleticism, refinement, and practicality make it well worth a look if you're shopping for a luxury sports car. Even so, you might want to check out alternatives like the Audi A7 , BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe, or Mercedes' own CLS first. All three mirror the GT's mix of luxury sedan and sports car attributes but cost less.

2021 vs. 2022 Mercedes-AMG GT: What's the Difference?

The big updates for the 2022 AMG GT are mainly subtractions. Mercedes-Benz discontinued the two-door coupe and convertible models. The coupe is expected to be redesigned and return as a 2023 model, and the convertible will likely be replaced by the 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL . Mercedes also dropped the V8-powered GT sedans (GT 63 and 63 S), but both are expected to return for 2023.

On the plus side, the two models that remain – the GT 43 and GT 53 sedans – are now available with a rear bench seat, which raises the seating capacity from four to five in equipped models.

  • 2022: coupe and V8 sedan models on hiatus; convertible model discontinued; five-seat configuration available
  • 2021: GT 43 and Black Series trims added; entry-level coupe and convertible models gained more horsepower
  • 2020: coupe and convertible models gained refreshed styling and updated infotainment systems; GT R Pro trim introduced; GT S trim discontinued
  • 2019: four-door sedan model debuted

How Much is a 2022 Mercedes-Benz GT?

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG GT 43 has a starting MSRP of $92,500. That isn't the highest starting price in the luxury sports car class , but it's definitely up there. The price climbs to $102,600 for the GT 53 model. Options can raise the price of either model by thousands of dollars.

Mercedes-AMG GT Versus the Competition

Mercedes-amg gt vs. mercedes-benz cls.

The Mercedes-Benz CLS is sort of like a diet version of the AMG GT. It shares the same overall platform as the AMG, it's similarly sized and styled, and it even has the same six-cylinder turbocharged engine and all-wheel-drive system as the GT 43 trim. The kicker is that the CLS has a far lower starting price ($72,950) than its AMG cousin, its suspension yields a cushier ride, and it comes standard with five seats (an option for the GT). It's easily the better value in this comparison, but it isn't the winner across the board. The AMG GT has sharper handling than the CLS, more standard features, and a liftback-style trunk that is slightly larger.

Compare the GT and CLS »

Mercedes-AMG GT vs. Audi A7

The Audi A7 has a similar appeal to the AMG GT. These are both four-door sedans with lively handling, standard AWD, beautifully trimmed cabins, and liftback-style trunks. But that's where the similarities begin to diverge. The A7 has a lower base price ($69,200) than the AMG, a larger cargo area, and five seats as standard. It also has a wider range of engines, from a thriftier V6 and a plug-in-hybrid setup to a breathtaking twin-turbo V8. On the other hand, the AMG offers more standard safety features, and its infotainment system is a bit easier to use.

AMG GT Performance: Grand Tour de Force

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG GT is offered with two engine options. The GT 43 has a 362-horsepower turbocharged inline six-cylinder, while the GT 53 features a supercharged version of that engine with 429 horsepower. Both engines also feature a 48-volt mild-hybrid system (EQ Boost) that can provide an extra 21-horsepower bump when needed. A nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive come standard.

The GT 43's straight-six is one smooth operator, and it enables swift off-the-line acceleration and commanding passing power at higher speeds. It also sings a sweet tune, especially when paired with the available active exhaust. Shifts from the nine-speed transmission are prompt and silky. The GT 53 ups the ante a bit further with an additional punch of low-end torque and sharper throttle response. There isn't a bad pick here.

GT Engine Options

  • Base engine:  turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque; starts at $92,500 (GT 43)
  • Available engine: turbocharged and supercharged 3.0-liter inline-six with 429 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque; starts at $102,600 (GT 53)
  • Drivetrain: all-wheel drive (4Matic)
  • Transmission: nine-speed automatic

GT Performance Packages and Options:

  • AMG performance exhaust  ($1,850): active exhaust system
  • 20-inch wheels (starting at $850)
  • 21-inch wheels (starting at $3,650)

GT Appearance Packages :

  • AMG Night package  ($750): black chrome tailpipes and gloss-black front splitter, fender trim, side mirrors, and window accents
  • Extended Night package ($550): black exterior badging
  • AMG Exterior Carbon Fiber package ($3,700; GT 53 only): carbon-fiber front splitter, fender trim, side sill inserts, and rear diffuser
  • AMG Silver Chrome Exterior Accent package ($1,050; GT 53 only): a polished chrome front splitter and a rear diffuser

GT Gas Mileage

The Mercedes-AMG GT gets decent fuel economy for the luxury sports car segment . Both the GT 43 and GT 53 models return an EPA-rated 19 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. That isn't quite as thrifty as the Audi A7 or BMW 8 Series , but it's leagues better than the Nissan GT-R .

GT Ride and Handling

The AMG GT is deceptively fleet-footed for such a large sedan. It feels planted and agile through tight turns, and it exhibits minimal body lean when cornering at high speed. The steering is quick and nicely weighted, and the GT's big brakes confidently slow this sports sedan to a halt. An adaptive suspension is standard and can adjust on the fly to changes in the road surface. Still, the GT has a rather firm ride, even in its comfiest setting. Picking the standard 19-inch wheels over the available 20- and 21-inch rollers can help muffle the impacts from rougher roads.

How Fast Is the GT?

It isn't the fastest car in its class, but the AMG GT is no slouch either. The GT 43 can slingshot from zero to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds, and – on a long enough racetrack – it can hit a top speed of 167 mph. The GT 53 is a bit faster in both regards. It can hit 60 mph in 4.4 seconds and notch a top speed of 174 mph.

Does the GT Have All-Wheel Drive?

Yes, the 2022 AMG GT comes standard with Mercedes' 4Matic all-wheel-drive system.

AMG GT Interior: Jet Set Lifestyle

Gt interior quality.

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG GT sports a lovely interior that complements its lively performance. The dashboard flows elegantly from door to door, and just about every cabin surface is trimmed with high-end materials like stitched leather, open-pore wood, aluminum, and soft-touch plastic. The overall build quality is exceptional, and there's minimal wind noise intrusion, though tire noise is higher than expected for a car at this price point. The cockpit design hasn't changed much since the GT first debuted, but it has aged well, and the widescreen infotainment system keeps it looking fresh and futuristic.

GT Infotainment, Bluetooth, and Navigation

The AMG GT is outfitted with the MBUX infotainment system, which features a sleek 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster that integrates cleanly into a central 12.3-inch touch screen. This dual-display system dazzles with its crisp graphics, prompt responses, and multiple redundant controls. For instance, you can control the system by tapping on-screen, using the touchpad on the center console, pressing buttons on the dashboard and steering wheel, or by voicing a command to the digital assistant – "Hey Mercedes, get directions to Starbucks."

The sheer number of menus and functions can be overwhelming at first, but it becomes quite user-friendly with practice.

  • Standard infotainment features: a 12.3-inch touch screen, navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, the ''Hey Mercedes'' digital assistant, a 14-speaker stereo, HD Radio, satellite radio, Bluetooth, three USB ports, and wireless device charging
  • Available infotainment features: hand gesture recognition, a rear-seat touch screen, rear-seat wireless device charging, a 25-speaker stereo, and two more USB ports
  • Additional standard features: a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, remote start, dual-zone automatic climate control, a sunroof, and ambient lighting
  • Other available features: tri-zone automatic climate control, a cabin air fragrance system, a panoramic sunroof, and a rear sunshade

For more information, read What Is Apple CarPlay? and What Is Android Auto?

GT Cargo Space

The Mercedes-AMG GT has a liftback-style trunk with 12.7 cubic feet of cargo room. The trunk opening is wide and deep, and there's plenty of space for a set of golf clubs, a few carry-on bags, or a large haul of groceries. The only problem is that the trunk lip is rather high, which can make it a chore to lift heavy items up, over, and into the trunk.

How Many People Does the GT Seat?

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG GT is a four-door sedan with four seats. An optional rear bench seat raises the seating capacity to five. The front seats are supple and supportive, and it's easy to find a comfortable driving position. There's also adequate headroom and legroom for taller drivers and passengers to stretch out. The GT offers good visibility to the front and sides, but the rear sightlines are pinched by the cascading roofline. The roof also steals precious headroom from back-seat passengers, though kids and shorter adults should have enough space.

Synthetic leather upholstery and heated front seats are standard. Options include genuine leather upholstery, ventilated and massaging front seats, heated rear seats, heated armrests, heated and cooled cup holders, and a heated steering wheel.

GT and Child Car Seats

The AMG GT has two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats.

Mercedes launched the AMG GT in early 2015 as a 2016 model. Initially, the GT was offered solely as a two-door coupe, or grand tourer, as its name denotes. Mercedes followed up this model with a two-door convertible in 2017 and a four-door sedan in 2018.

Which Mercedes-AMG GT Model Is Right for Me?

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG GT comes in two trims: GT 43 and GT 53. Unlike previous years, the 2022 GT is available as a four-door sedan only. Given the car's already high starting price, we'd suggest sticking with the base GT 43 trim. It has robust engine performance and poised handling. It also has the same standard and available features as the GT 53, but it costs about $10,000 less.

Mercedes-AMG GT 43

The entry-level AMG GT 43 sedan has a base MSRP of $92,500. Standard equipment includes a 362-horsepower turbocharged inline-six engine, a nine-speed automatic transmission, all-wheel drive (4Matic), an adaptive suspension, 19-inch wheels, and four seats. Additional standard features include synthetic leather upholstery, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, remote start, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, a 12.3-inch touch screen, navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, three USB ports, wireless device charging, HD Radio, satellite radio, a 14-speaker stereo, a sunroof, and a power liftgate with a retractable spoiler.

Many active safety features are also standard, including blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, forward automatic emergency braking, driver-attention monitoring, adaptive LED headlights with automatic high beams, a surround-view parking camera system, and hands-free park assist.

The options list is lengthy and includes genuine leather upholstery, heated armrests, ventilated and massaging front seats, heated rear seats, a three-passenger rear bench seat (five-seat layout), a heated steering wheel, a panoramic sunroof, a rear sunshade, power soft-close doors, a cabin fragrance system, hand gesture recognition, a 25-speaker stereo, a Dashcam, a head-up display, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and 20- and 21-inch wheels.

There's also an Executive Rear Seat package, which adds tri-zone automatic climate control, heated and cooled cup holders, a rear center console with a touch screen, rear-seat wireless device charging, and two more USB ports.

Mercedes-AMG GT 53

The AMG GT 53 starts at $102,600. This trim packs a 429-horsepower turbocharged and supercharged inline-six engine, but otherwise, it has largely the same standard and optional features as the GT 43.

The Final Call

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG GT gets all the basics right. This luxury sports car is quick, comfortable, fun to drive, and packed with all the latest and greatest features. Its sleek exterior and high-end interior are also bound to turn heads. But without its fire-breathing V8 models – both in two- and four-door forms – the GT feels like it has lost some of its magic.

Don't just take our word for it. Check out comments from some of the reviews that drive our rankings and analysis.

  • "The AMG GT sedan doesn't quite measure up to the best performance sedans. You get a great engine, comfortable seats, super-premium materials and taut handling. But you also get a somewhat cluttered interior, a slightly stiff but noisy ride, and a relatively numb driving experience as you push the car harder. For every strength, there's a weakness." -- Edmunds
  • "From mild to wild, AMG will have a car for you, and after sampling both the base and range-topping models, I can confidently say that you won't be disappointed with any version of this swoopy stunner." -- CNET (2019)

The 13 Best Grand Touring Cars You can Buy

The term GT comes from the Italian Gran Turismo, which basically describes any car that is designed for both high speeds and long distances. It came to be in the 1950s but really only enjoyed the popularity it was due when major manufacturers like Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler started using the initials to push their high-performance machines.

We have since changed the term to grand touring, and in some cases added other letters to it to define different makes and models of performance vehicles. But what defines the GT, what separates it from other categories of automobiles that are flooding the markets of the world? And what should you be considering if you are looking at taking the plunge into the wonderful world of the GT?

We have put together a list of the Best Grand Touring style cars that are available for the car-buyer in today’s diverse automotive industry. Have a look, read the comparisons, then make a decision on which of these must-have toys is the one just-for-you.

Rolls-Royce Wraith

If we are going to talk about grand touring cars, why not start with the grandest of all, the Rolls Royce Wraith? Let’s face it; when it comes to all things luxury, it’s hard to forget a Rolls-Royce, and the Wraith is certainly a car that fits all of the stereotypes of this exclusive brand. Based on the chassis of the classic Ghost, its two-door pillar-less design sets it apart from the Rolls-Royce’s that most of us have come accustomed to. The manufactures relied heavily on influences from classic 50s-style American cars. In what seems to be a contradiction, the windows retract fully like a convertible, but the roof remains solid like a classic hardtop.

Technically, the Wraith is considered a two-door hardtop coupe, but one of the things I love about this car is the drive-train that will push this beast to very comfortable highway speeds. Under the hood is the highly engineered BMW N74 twin turbo V12. This little gem will produce an awe-inspiring 623 horsepower, enough to get you down any piece of pavement, let alone the highways of the U.S. The price tag may scare you off a little, but what the hell, if you’ve got, flaunt it.

The Toyota Companies luxury division, Lexus, gave us this remarkable car for too short a time. Manufactured between 2011 and 2012, only 500 of the featured model were produced. Even though this car has been described as a two-door sports car, it fits right in with the grand touring category. The first versions of this car were unveiled in 2005 and went on to become what is essentially one of Japan’s most expensive road cars to ever be built. The version that you see here is priced at around $375,000; that, is of course, if you can find one that is for sale.

This Formula-One inspired car is powered by a 553 horsepower 4.8-liter V10 engine that was developed in conjunction with Yamaha and will get you from 0-60 mph in just under 4 seconds. Once you hit the highway in one of these beauties, you are sure to turn the heads of any motoring enthusiast. One well-known car magazine described the LFA as “expensive, over-specified and looks like an evil transformer, the greatest Japanese car? Maybe”.

Ford Mustang GT

Let’s look at some home-grown muscle that well and truly characterizes the true meaning of the term GT. This is the 6 th generation of the extremely popular pony car and is, without doubt, the best yet. Probably the most notable change on the newest Mustang is the widened body. An extra 1.5 inches has been added to the width of the car, while 1.4 inches has been eliminated from the body height. Ford has improved many other aspects of the classic car as well. They increased the passenger space while managing to keep the same wheelbase length. Combine this with a brand new independent suspension system designed specifically for this car, and you have a pretty nice grand tourer.

Now for the biggest surprise. Ford has given you three engine options to think about. First, the V8. Let’s face it; if you are going to have a Mustang, you might as well go for the muscle as well. But for the economy-minded motorist who still wants to own a classic, there is the 3.7-liter V6 model capable of 300 horsepower or the brand new development of the 2.3-liter EcoBoost 4-cylinder power plant that will give you a respectable 310 horsepower. Whatever your needs, the Ford Mustang GT will deliver.

Chevrolet Corvette

Okay, so I gave you the rundown on the Ford Mustang first, but not to upset the Chevy fans out there; it’s now your turn. I guess nothing says grand tourer more than the word Corvette. Since 1963, General Motors has been exciting us with generation after generation of these beautiful cars. Like the Mustang, this U.S.-made classic will always be a favorite for the Stateside car enthusiast. This car is the 7 th generation offered by the General and is undoubtedly the best Vette yet. The motivation for your pavement outings is supplied by a neatly packaged 5.5- liter, double overhead crankshaft, flat-crank V8 that will provide 500 highway horsepower resting under your right foot.

Whether you are a highway tourer or an inner-city street cruiser, the Chevrolet Corvette is a car well worth considering as your next toy. Not only will it turn heads regardless of the type of pavement you are on, but it is going to be an inspirational and exciting car to drive. It’s an American classic that will go down in the annals of automotive history as one of the biggest trend-setting vehicles of any generation.

BMW 8 Series

The Bavarian Motor Works Company has always produced stylish and extremely well-engineered motor vehicles, and the 8 Series grand tourer is no exception. The 8 series of cars was first introduced to the world markets way back in 1990 and has gone on to bigger and better things since. Originally only available as a two-door coupe, the latest variants also include a soon-to-be-released convertible. The two options that you also have are the front engine rear-wheel drive format or the road-hugging all-wheel-drive configuration that will keep you stuck to any highway you choose to venture on.

The interior of this very pretty automobile is as you would expect from BMW, luxurious and practical. The German car manufacturer is now offering the choice of the highly regarded in-line-six diesel engine, an unusual fit for a grand tourer, or the 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8. The Series 8 BMW is unashamedly aimed at the driver who is looking for not only performance but a little prestige as well. There are not too many manufacturers out there that have so much faith in one model, but 20 years into production, it’s still a best seller.

Aston Martin DB9

If there was ever the ultimate classic GT car, then the Aston Martin is definitely the one. When writing about such an iconic manufacturer, words like legendary, luxurious, and stylish come to mind, but as I am a fan, all I need to write is “James Bond.” Okay, let’s get all that silliness out of the way. The Aston Martin DB9 is one very serious motor vehicle. Not only does it come from a lineage of incredibly successful and classic cars, but it’s not scared to give you the performance that you would expect from this British masterpiece.

Sadly, for those of us who regard this car as an all-time classic, Aston Martin decided to call it a day for the DB9 after 12 very successful years. If you can manage to lay your hands on one of these cars, you will be able to harness the power of the “Vanquish” designed 5.9-liter V12 engine that will make your ride a 510 horsepower journey. It doesn’t matter where you are on this wonderful planet of ours, if there is a highway to be conquered, then the Aston Martin DB9 is the car to do it in.

Porsche 911

When it comes to grand touring cars, no list could ever be complete without a Porsche somewhere in it. Even though the majority of us won’t think about this, the 911 is one of the most versatile sports cars on the market today. You will find these legendary rear-engine steeds on every possible surface you can imagine. From the racetracks of the world to rally championships and even the occasional sojourn into drag racing, these all-around workhorses are comfortable in any given circumstance.

When it comes to pure driving pleasure, there are not many cars that come close to the experience one has when behind the wheel of a Porsche. We tend to forget that unlike some other cars on this list, Porsche has been around since 1933, so therefore has a wealth of knowledge and experience to fall upon when it comes to designing cars with not only performance in mind but driving gratification as well. Take on any highway with confidence, because you can rest assured, the Porsche 911 will take it all in its stride without working up a sweat.

Maserati Gran Turismo

The name itself embodies everything that GT stands for. Since 2007, the Gran Turismo has graced the roads and highways of the world with the lucky few that own one, enjoying every mile passed. Now, for those of you who are Maserati fans, the Gran Turismo was based on the Quattroprts V platform, which utilizes the double-wishbone front and rear suspension and has a drag co-efficiency of .33. Designed primarily as the ideal driver’s car, Maserati has spared no expense in giving you the ultimate ride.

Even though the power source is a relatively small 4.2 liters, this V8 will still throw out an impressive 399 horsepower, nothing to be sneezed at, and is coupled to their ZF 6-speed automatic and semi-automatic transmissions. The interesting thing about the engine in this car is that Maserati developed it with rival manufacturer Ferrari; the Maserati trident and the prancing stallion, certainly a formidable combination, and a potential conqueror of any of the world’s highways.

Mercedes-AMG S63 Coupe

AMG, the performance off-shoot of Mercedes, is no slouch when it comes to turning a luxury sedan into something that is in a class all of its own. The S63 Coupe is a prime example of their treatment. What literally started out as an S-class platform vehicle, the end results that AMG achieved are absolutely amazing. AMG utilizes all of the next generation technologies available to them, things such as ultra-modern interior designs and features, a sound system that is next to none, and a suspension update that will make your ride as smooth as silk. This, combined with their use of an engine construction that is not only efficient but oriented toward the performance end of the spectrum.

The use of a 5.5-liter direct fuel injected twin-turbocharged engine hooked up to Mercedes’s 7 speed MCT transmission ensures not only a comfortable ride but, if need be, an exhilarating one. The M157 engine also has 25% better fuel economy than its predecessor, the M156, meaning your highway tours will cost you less in gas, and U.S. tax. It also features what is becomes extremely popular among the name brands, the stop-start mode, and has been lightened to weigh in at only 204 kilograms. If it’s a classy cruise you want, you will be hard pressed to bypass the Mercedes-AMG S63 Coupe.

Bentley Continental GT

It’s funny; I’ve written quite a lot of articles revolving around the automotive industry, but I am sure I have never used the words Bentley and grand tourer in the same sentence before. Not that I am saying that this combination is a bad thing; I think that this is probably one of the best GT cars on the road today. As I researched more on the Bentley name, I realized that they have been manufacturing GT-style cars for quite some time. The Continental GT has been around since its inception in 2003 and was the first Bentley to be released by the new ownership of Volkswagen AG.

Bentley is renowned for its trademark luxury appointments, which go hand-in-hand with its prestigious reputation, so why not enter the field of the grand tourer? The Continental has also seen the introduction of mass-production, a first for Bentley in its history. The powerful W12, 6-liter engine will provide you with around 550 horsepower, enough for any respectable chauffeur to get you to the next meeting in style and opulence. Grand touring has never been held in such high esteem.

Ferrari GTC4 Lusso T

The Italians certainly know how to make a vehicle that is not only stylishly beautiful but a performance oriented car as well. The GTC4 Lusso T is a prime example of this combination and is remarkably well-designed. Based on the shooting-brake body design, this machine is a three-door, all-wheel drive dream. Its four seats will provide the driver and his special friends a comfortable and exhilarating cruise down any super-highway in the world. First seen at the Geneva Motor Show in 2016, this car replaced the Ferrari FF, which ceased production the same year.

The thrust is provided by Ferrari’s F140 65 degree V12 engine that produces a well-respected 682 horsepower at a very comfortable 5,750 rpm. Ferrari has claimed that this engine will motivate the GTC4 to a top speed of 208 mph and will accelerate you from 0-60 mph in just 3.4 seconds. Not only does this car have all-wheel drive, but it also has an improved version of their four-wheel-steering system, making this stallion a very sticky thoroughbred indeed.

Ferrari 812 Superfast

The Italian auto manufacturing giant has also given us the Ferrari 812 Superfast model. This two-door two-seater Berlinetta-styled GT will present you with a very respectable 789 horsepower, generated from the F140 GA 6.5-liter V12 engine. What makes this combination of car and drive chain unique is the intentional disregard of technology, relying solely on natural aspiration instead of a force-fed system. These two versions of the GT class of car from Ferrari offers the enthusiast a difference of configurations that will suit most.

Cadillac ELR

Even though the ELR is not really classed as a GT, it is well worth looking at. It is a four-passenger compact coupe but with one interesting difference from the rest of the cars that we have looked at so far. The Cadillac ELR is a hybrid, based on the same power-chain as the Chevrolet Volt. The Voltec EREV drive-chain is coupled with the ELR’s lithium-ion battery pack, giving the vehicle a 106 mph top speed.

Even though it is relatively slow compared to some of the other cars we have looked at, it is extremely well-appointed with all of the luxuries you would come to expect from Cadillac. Unfortunately, production of the ELR ceased in February of 2016, leaving total unit sale figures of just short of 3,000. If you can find one of the rare gems, buy it, because I am sure that the value will only increase as the years go by.

GT Honorable Mentions

There are plenty of other cars that come under the guise of the GT, and here are a few that are worth mentioning. BMW has the M6 , the two-door version of the M5 that features the same mechanics and driver comfort. The V10 version was probably the most sought after and is still a great tourer.

Who could forget the remarkable cars that the Jaguar Company gave us throughout the years? The classic XJS and E-Type , two of the finest GT class cars that the English manufacturer offered the world. The first of the V12 engines to be mass-produced in a street legal car. And the classic body design of the E-Type that is still admired and sought after by collectors everywhere. And who can forget the decades that Mercedes gave us the SL series? This two-seater GT was popular for many years, long before AMG came onto the scene.

There is also a myriad of other manufacturers that offer GT-style cars to the marketplace. Cars like the Volkswagen EOS 3.6 V6 , or the Volvo C30 and C70 . The Audi A5 and Infinity G37 , the Dodge Challenger R/T and the Cadillac CTS Coupe . The list goes on and on, so never fear; there IS a GT-style car out there that will be exactly what you are looking for.

These Are The 10 Best Cars From The Grand Tour Specials

In only five seasons of the show, The Grand Tour trio has already given us some of the most entertaining moments and coolest cars on TV.

The Grand Tour continued the tradition started by the three when they worked on Top Gear , where they went on extraordinary adventures with cars that really weren’t designed to tackle the challenge. Luckily for Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May, their new producers had much deeper pockets, and their expeditions became even grander.

Their first proper adventure on The Grand Tour involved the humble Beach Buggy – made famous by the Meyers Manx – where they drove to the north border of Namibia using mostly the coastline. Their next one involved transporting fish from the coast of Mozambique to a small village inland – which went about as well as expected. The following season included not one, but three specials involving chasing down some animals in Columbia, driving RVs across a US desert, and working together to assemble and drive a custom 4x4 named John across Mongolia from the middle of nowhere to civilization. The next season included only specials – from driving boats in Cambodia and Vietnam to looking for lost treasure in Madagascar and cruising the north of Scotland with classic American luxury barges.

Finally, the trio welcomed a new season with a trip across the very north of Scandinavia in two rally cars – and an Audi. Each of these adventures was incredible, and we cannot wait for what comes next. Here are ten of the best second-hand cars from The Grand Tour specials.

10 Jeremy’s Lincoln Continental

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the three presenters weren’t allowed to film in countries other than the British Isles, so they decided to import three American luxury barges and tour the north coast of Scotland. Richard Hammond bought a Buick Riviera Boattail, James May a Cadillac Coupe DeVille, and Jeremy Clarkson a Lincoln Continental Mark V .

Jeremy’s Lincoln was the longest of the lot and was the most difficult to drive in the city of Edinburgh. After driving around in search of the little piece of America somewhere in the far north, the three decided to modify their cars to look more American. The Continental even acted as a wave-maker to help James’ Caddy to get over a floating bridge. In the end, Jeremy kept his Lincoln for himself.

9 Hammond’s Buick Riviera

During the same Scotland Special – cleverly called Lochdown – Richard Hammond’s Buick Riviera caused the most problems. The Boattail Riviera wasn’t a particularly successful model but has since gained popularity.

During their modification session, Hammond fitted his Riviera with a supercharger and a Dodge Charger Daytona-style rear wing. The episode also saw the Buick overheat, get stuck in a ditch and flip a caravan – all in proper Grand Tour fashion. Like Jeremy, Hammond kept his Riviera which is currently living in his shed while he decides what to do with it.

8 James’ Fiat Panda 4x4

The Grand Tour ’s Columbia Special is one of the funniest of the lot. The three were tasked with photographing some rare animals within a region of the country. For the task, they each bought an off-roader suitable for the trails and fields they would be driving on. Jeremy bought a sensible Jeep Wrangler, Hammond a ridiculous Chevy Silverado, and James did the typical James May thing of buying a small 4x4 – in this case, a Fiat Panda.

Amazingly, the little Panda did everything the Jeep and the massive Silverado did, despite its low power output. The three modified their vehicles and the Panda turned into a wildlife-watching blind with camouflage netting and a camo pillowcase for James’ head. The whole episode is quite entertaining, especially their resistance to talking about a certain South American crop.

7 Hammond’s Chevrolet Silverado Monster Truck

The Columbia Special saw many entertaining situations. Some of the best usually involved Hammond trying to drive his silly Chevy Silverado monster truck. For starters, the truck was bubble-wrapped and needed to be towed ashore – a sequence of events that included using James’ Panda as an anchor, a screaming Hammond, and the destruction of beach property. Pretty standard stuff for the three presenters.

Another hilarious situation was when Hammond drove into a ditch in the road and Jeremy and James built a bridge over the top of the Silverado’s roof. Hammond also had a terrible time navigating the huge vehicle in the old city of Cartagena. In the end, the massive Chevy made it to the endpoint without too much of a problem, even though it was the slowest of the three.

6 Jeremy’s Bentley Continental V8 ‘MFB’

The last Grand Tour special filmed before the pandemic hit was ‘ A Massive Hunt ’ in which the three went in search of pirate treasure on the islands of Reunion and Madagascar. Each presenter bought a performance car for use on the nice roads of Reunion. Jeremy bought a Bentley Continental GT V8 – an extremely comfortable and luxurious GT car.

Upon discovering they had to go to Madagascar, they modified their cars and Jeremy’s Bentley turned into what is probably one of the coolest cars ever used by the three presenters on both Top Gear and The Grand Tour . The Bentley did a fantastic job of off-roading on the terrible roads of Madagascar – eventually being used to race away from an exploding beach.

5 Hammond’s Ford Focus RS ‘Fury’

Hammond’s choice for the treasure hunt was a Ford Focus RS , a brilliant hot hatchback with all-wheel-drive and a punchy turbocharged inline-4 engine. The Focus RS did pretty well in the drag race on the highway on Reunion, but it is what Hammond did to the vehicle in preparation for Madagascar which was extremely impressive.

Instead of doing what Jeremy did with his Bentley, Hammond swapped the conventional wheels on the Focus RS for off-road tracks, the same ones often used to drive in thick snow. While this reduced the Focus’ top speed dramatically, it worked pretty well to conquer rough terrain – when Hammond was careful. Unfortunately, the tracks came off a few times, resulting in Hammond replacing them with normal wheels again. Ultimately, the clutch was completely destroyed before he reached the end, marking the first time he couldn’t finish one of their specials.

4 James’ Caterham Seven

The final car of ‘ A Massive Hunt ’ was James May’s Caterham Seven. He apparently chose this car because he has always wanted to and this time round, he did. After the episode aired, he admitted that it was the wrong car for the task at hand, but still enjoyed it.

The Caterham did fantastically on the paved roads of Reunion, but James modified it for Madagascar. The resulting Caterham had more in common with a tractor than it did with the car it was originally based on, but it worked. Granted, James and the interior of his car ended up getting covered in warm mud for most of the trip, but he made to the end without any major issues. Plus, it was hilarious to see him constantly being covered in dirt as he drove along.

3 Jeremy’s V8 Beach Buggy

The trio’s first proper adventure on The Grand Tour involved them driving along the coast of Namibia in three Beach Buggies specially built for the task. James did the proper thing and turned the humble VW Beetle into the vision exhibited by the original Meyers Manx. Hammond did mostly the same thing, apart from the lifted suspension, off-road tires and massive roll cage. Jeremy, on the other hand, stuffed a 3.5-liter V8 from a Range Rover into the back of his vehicle.

As probably guessed, the weight of the V8 created a problem with ride height and fuel economy, but it persevered. Later in the episode, the V8 overheated, and the throttle produced issues thanks to the corrugated dirt road, so Jeremy employed a high-tech method to control the throttle – a piece of string. In the end, all three buggies made it to the endpoint, resulting in a fantastically entertaining adventure.

2 John The 4x4

Much like the Polar Special from their days on Top Gear , the Mongolia Special saw the three working together to reach the finish line. Initially, they were dropped off by helicopter and left in the middle of a grassy area. A few minutes later, three crates were airdropped in and upon opening them, the three realized they contained vehicle parts – much like the crated Willy’s Jeep of the Second World War.

The three set about building their custom 4x4 – well, two of them anyway. Once they set off and got a feel for it, they named it ‘John’ as it was a dependable vehicle. Over the course of the next few days, James and Jeremy drove John while making sure Hammond didn’t move more than a few feet as he was prone to accidents. They finally made it to civilization, with most of John still intact. Even for non-motoring enthusiasts, the Mongolia Special is a fantastic hour and a half of watching pleasure about three friends ‘mucking about’.

1 James’ Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VIII

The Grand Tour ’s most recent excursion saw them driving across the north of Scandinavia, going from Norway, through Sweden, and finally ending at an airstrip in Finland – all while staying north of the Arctic Circle. To accomplish this trip, the three were told to buy rally-bred models. Hammond bought a Subaru Impreza WRX STI, James a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VIII, and Jeremy an Audi RS4 B7 – pretending it was a Sport Quattro.

A Scandi Flick is a brilliant special and brought the three presenters back to their normal selves after the pandemic lockdowns and struggles with getting filming permits. While the challenges they did were brilliant, the hero of the episode was definitely James’ Mitsubishi. He crashed it in a very unfamiliar Captain Slow fashion when racing down a tunnel, and it fell through the ice while driving over a frozen lake. Yet, despite the broken front end and water getting in everywhere, it still managed to drive to the end. It has since become one of the most memorable cars used by the three, and we cannot wait for the Polish Special coming up next.

12 Of The Coolest Grand Touring Cars Ever Built

Aston Martin DB5 in warehouse

The letters GT crop up in a huge range of automotive segments, from the VW Golf GTI to the Ford Mustang Mach-E GT . In almost all cases, the letters stand for "grand touring" — or the Italian "gran turismo," from where the English phrase is originally derived. Arguably, neither of the cars previously mentioned bear any relation to the original meaning of the term, and neither do many of the modern cars that feature GT badging. In the traditional sense, grand touring cars are those built to blend the attributes of a sports car with those of a luxury car, providing the best of both worlds.

They're designed to be well-appointed and comfortable to drive but also powerful and athletic. That makes them excellent for long-distance road trips as well as high-speed driving. Sports cars, by comparison, are traditionally engineered primarily for the latter, while luxury cars focus on comfort over performance. The grand tourer designation stretches back to the days of the European post-war auto industry, and there have been countless GT models produced since. With that in mind, we've rounded up 12 of our favorites that stick out as particularly cool examples of the segment, from classics to cutting-edge cars.

Aston Martin V8 Vantage '77

The original Aston Martin "brute in a suit," the 1977 V8 Vantage mixed British craftsmanship and luxury with uncompromising V8 power. It was designed to maximize the power output of the engine found in the Aston Martin V8, pushing horsepower figures up by 40% while maintaining the original car's mile-munching long-distance comfort. With up to 380 horsepower on offer, the car boasted a 0-60 mph time of 5.2 seconds and a top speed north of 170 mph.

It's often credited as the first British supercar, although its four seats and generous luggage space offered more everyday practicality than the term supercar might imply. This wasn't simply a track day toy or a technical showcase – despite being the world's fastest four-seater at the time of its release, this was very much still a plush drivers' car built with long road trips in mind.

Not all V8 Vantages were built equal, however. Due to restrictive emissions regulations, American-market examples were initially sold without the boost in power over the standard V8 coupe, although most have been retrofitted in the decades since to match their European counterparts. All the other Vantage upgrades, from the new suspension to the unique body kit, remained the same across all markets.

Jaguar E-Type

While the Aston Martin V8 Vantage may well have been Britain's first supercar, it certainly wasn't Britain's first grand touring icon. The country's carmakers had been experimenting with combining luxury and performance since the post-war days, with the Jaguar E-Type one of the most successful creations .

The car debuted at the 1961 Geneva Motor Show and attracted so much interest from customers and the media that the company's sole demonstration car was fully booked out. To accommodate the overwhelming demand, a Jaguar engineer drove a second test car from the marque's base in Coventry, England to the Swiss motor show overnight. In a testament to its grand touring pedigree, the car completed the 700-mile journey with time to spare, arriving at the show in time for test drives to commence the following morning.

Alongside its impressive performance -– Jaguar claimed a 150 mph top speed –- the E-Type's styling also set it apart from its peers. Enzo Ferrari famously called it "the most beautiful car in the world," and over the years, its flowing lines have remained just as striking. The icing on the cake for buyers at the time was that the E-Type was also significantly more affordable than many of its contemporaries, with a price that equates to around $50,000 in today's money.

Ferrari 365 GTB4 Daytona

The Ferrari "Daytona" took its nickname from the dominant 1-2-3 finish that the automaker achieved at the 1967 24 Hours of Daytona, but officially, it was only ever known as the 365 GTB4. It was developed in both road-going and race-spec variants, with the latter proving to be particularly dominant at Le Mans. The Daytona won its class at Le Mans three years consecutively between 1972 and 1974, putting on a particularly dominant performance in '72, when it took the first five places in its class.

Aside from its success on the track, the Daytona also proved to be an exceptional road car, offering both fierce performance and a comfortable, elegant cabin. Performance varied slightly depending on region, with American-market cars bound by stricter regulations and, therefore, slightly slower than Euro-spec cars.

Still, their timeless design and status as one of Ferrari's best cars from the era have kept prices consistently high for collectors in recent years. Most publicly sold examples fetch over half a million dollars, with the most pristine examples costing $800,000 or more.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe

Alongside the classics, there are a number of more modern grand tourers that also deserve a spot on this list. One such car is the current generation S-Class Coupe , whose name sums up its appeal — it combines the luxury and technology of the S-Class limousine with the looks and handling of a coupe.

The S-Class line is famous for its use of cutting-edge tech, and the S-Class Coupe didn't disappoint. The headline features all centered around ride comfort. For instance, there was Magic Body Control, which used a series of cameras to assess the road surface ahead and adapt the suspension to match, as well as a luxury lounge cabin with optional Nappa leather upholstery. Three variants were made available at launch, the most powerful of which was the 621 horsepower AMG S65. The top-spec car featured a 6.0L V12 engine, while all other variants packed a V8 under the hood.

Despite superseding the SL line as the flagship Mercedes grand tourer, the S-Class Coupe's production run was short-lived. Production was axed after 2021 as the brand slimmed down its lineup, leaving the current-generation SL its closest replacement.

Maserati Ghibli

The Ghibli nameplate is unusual among Maserati's back catalog as it has been revived twice over the years, and both of those revivals are very different from the original. Arguably, it's the original grand tourer that's still the greatest incarnation to bear the name, with its production run spanning from 1967 to 1972. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the Ghibli was a traditional GT car in that it featured a 2+2 seating layout, a luxurious cabin, and enough luggage space to store weekend bags for a road trip.

The car's V8 engine was shared with other Maserati models, including the four-door Quattroporte sedan, and made either 330 or 335 horsepower depending on configuration. In its most potent Ghibli SS form, it could reportedly reach a top speed of 177 mph. Over 1,300 examples were built in total, with the spyder variant much rarer than the coupe.

Widely considered one of Giugiaro's greatest designs, the car's engine featured a dry sump to accommodate the sloping hood. Pop-up headlights also kept the hood line uninterrupted, giving the front end a sleek, flowing appearance.

Bentley Continental GT

Few modern grand tourers have shaped the history of an entire brand as much as the Bentley Continental. The modern Continental GT, unveiled in the early '00s, marked a turning point for the brand -– freshly revived under VW Group ownership, Bentley proved it could still make a world-class performance car without compromising on the sense of luxury on which it had built its reputation. The car was significantly faster than its predecessor, boasting a W12 engine and a more aerodynamic styling.

Its success, both critically and commercially, helped Bentley transform its image and its bottom line. The modern Continental GT still follows a similar formula to that of the relaunched 2003 car, which is a testament to the original's design. High running costs and traditional British (read: questionable) reliability have helped keep used values low, although given the car's importance to Bentley as a brand, it may well become more collectible in the future.

Aston Martin DB5

One of the best-known grand tourers thanks to its iconic role in the classic James Bond film "Goldfinger," the Aston Martin DB5 is both very rare and very valuable today. It featured a 4.0L straight-six engine making 282 horsepower, enough to propel the car to an officially quoted top speed of 150 mph. Its high-performance engine was complemented by a highly sophisticated cabin, with journalists from the era comparing its high-tech dashboard to that of an aircraft. However, the standard car paled in comparison to the technology available in James Bond's highly modified example.

Although none of the original 900 or so customer DB5s could be optioned with Bond gadgets, a limited continuation run launched in 2020 gave buyers a chance to get behind the wheel of their own movie-grade car. Featuring extras like bulletproof glass, replica machine guns, and built-in battering rams, each DB5 Goldfinger Continuation took 4,500 hours to construct. A run of just 25 examples were built, all of which were quickly snapped up.

Even without its big-screen gadgets, the DB5 remains an extremely desirable collector's car, as well as one of the most capable grand tourers of its era. Unfortunately, its fame now means that few examples will still be used as originally intended — for long road trips and high-speed jaunts across the country. Rather, they'll likely be confined to air-conditioned garages as museum pieces, all while their value continues to increase.

Toyota 2000GT

A landmark car in Japanese automotive history, the Toyota 2000GT was the first car to prove that the country's automakers could build a true performance vehicle. It was designed as a response to Japan's burgeoning racing scene, with the goal of making a car just as capable on the road as it was on the track. With Toyota lacking the production facilities to build such a bespoke car, Yamaha was contracted to build both the prototype and production units.

The car was first unveiled in 1965 but was only launched for public sale in 1967. It proved to be a relatively slow seller –- wealthy domestic buyers were still unsure about the competitiveness of a Japanese grand tourer, and there was virtually no interest in the car outside its home market. In total, a reported 337 road cars were built, plus a handful for racing use. Each car was powered by a 2.0L straight-six engine making 150 horsepower, enough for a top speed of 136 mph.

While they never saw sales success at the time, their iconic status has made them highly sought-after collectors' cars today. Examples don't often appear for public sale, but when they do, they tend to fetch anywhere between $500,000 and $1,000,000.

Rolls-Royce Wraith

While previous Rolls-Royces had remained firmly in luxury car territory, the Wraith took a new direction and focused on driver enjoyment as much as pure luxury. As such, it's considered to be the first modern-era Rolls-Royce grand tourer.

While traditionally, Rolls-Royce was never keen on showing off performance figures for its cars, once even famously describing the output of its Silver Shadow as "adequate," the press release for the Wraith was a different matter. Its 624 horsepower engine and 4.4 second 0-60 mph time were among the first details disclosed about the car, alongside the typical description of its luxurious cabin.

When driving the Wraith , we were struck by how quiet and refined it remained even through more spirited driving. It's no doubt one of the most tranquil ways to embark on a cross-country jaunt should the situation call for it. A unique kind of grand tourer, then, and one that still errs closer to the luxury than the performance side of the segment. Make no mistake, however — this is still a seriously rapid car, one that we found frighteningly easy to hit license-losing speeds in as we cruised down the highway.

Facel Vega HK500

While the longevity of brands like Ferrari, Jaguar, and Aston Martin has ensured their greatest grand tourers remain in the limelight, not every vintage icon has been so lucky. The Facel Vega HK500 was among the most desirable cars of its day, with a laundry list of celebrity owners stretching from Pablo Picasso to Sir Stirling Moss. However, in the decades since the Facel brand folded, it's remained under the radar compared to many of its contemporaries.

It's thought that roughly 490 examples of the car were built over its production run, although it's unknown how many of those survive to the present day. The HK500 was an upgraded version of the Vega FVS, boasting a more powerful, Chrysler-sourced V8 engine. It produced a reported 360 horsepower and could reach a top speed in excess of 140 mph.

The upgraded car was introduced in 1959 but wasn't in production for long. By 1964, the Facel brand had shuttered altogether, marking an unceremonious end for one of the greatest French grand tourers ever made.

Ferrari 250 GTO

Described by Ferrari as "the ultimate expression of the Ferrari 250 GT car," the 250 GTO is also among the most valuable Ferrari cars ever produced. Part of that is down to its rarity, as just 36 examples were made. The car was originally developed by Giotto Bizzarrini as a rival to the Jaguar E-Type, but its development was interrupted by the infamous Ferrari revolution of 1961.

Following a heated disagreement with Enzo Ferrari, Bizzarrini was fired, along with several other key staff members. That left designer Sergio Scaglietti, another legendary name in Ferrari's history, to polish the design so it was ready for road car production to begin. The car was designed to be suited for both high-performance road driving and circuit competition, and many of the surviving 250 GTOs can claim some degree of racing pedigree.

While it's no longer the outright most expensive car in the world, the best examples of the 250 GTO continue to fetch eye-watering sums at auction. In 2022, a previously single-family-owned example sold for an astonishing $38.1 million .

Koenigsegg Gemera

The Koenigsegg Gemera is not like other grand tourers. It can still seat four and has room for a modest amount of luggage, and it even comes with an optional V8 engine. However, that V8, along with ample assistance from the car's electric motors, makes a combined 2,300 horsepower. For context, that's more than twice as much as the original Bugatti Veyron. Yet, the Koenigsegg can still transport a small family.

The Gemera is simulteneously the most sensible and the most outlandish Koenigsegg made to date, and it sports a suitably outlandish asking price. It's been reported that the V8 Gemera will cost at least $2.1 million, representing a $400,000 premium over the standard 1,400 horsepower variant. Its performance stats make it difficult to define: as a four-seater, two-door hybrid, it follows the formula for which many GTs of the future will undoubtedly follow, yet with its ridiculous four-figure power output, it's also one of the most groundbreaking — not to mention exclusive — hypercars ever built.

Whether it will be just as comfortable and engaging to drive as the best classic grand tourers remains to be seen for now, but one thing is for certain — for crossing continents in a hurry, nothing short of an airplane is better suited for the job.

Eres un figura… Gracias, Un saludo

' src=

Mozambique last !? This was for me the best and funniest of all the episodes!

' src=

I thought enviro-mental was one of the highlights in season one, although what James built was stupid and just not funny. They should re-do that episode except this time they all follow Richard Hammond’s concept idea.

' src=

Really disappointed with the mini special, was looking forward to it all series, think next time they should do a normal 2hr special cos that 1 was rubbish an just felt rushed :/

' src=

Yeah so was I to be honest. I wonder if carting around such a large crew puts a limit on how far they can go or what they’re able to do.

' src=

feels like all they do is talking while driving. usually we would’ve see them detour, buying souvenirs, ‘upgrading’ their vehicles, enjoying the view, etcetera etcetera

The Grand Tour: All The Special Episodes Ranked From Worst To Best

Despite The Grand Tour being presented by Jeremy Clarkson , Richard Hammond, and James May from Top Gear , it felt very different from the BBC car show. For one, fans complained of the show feeling more scripted than before. Regardless of this, it’s still been incredibly successful with it now becoming a show that focuses on specials only, with no more studio/tent episodes alongside an audience. So, with the new Scotland special on the way as well as a special that found the trio in Wales and Warwickshire, we had to go through all of the special episodes released up to this point.

So, with one hell of a budget from Amazon, The Grand Tour has managed to explore the world in all sort of different cars, and even boats. But which are the best to watch? Read on and we’ll find out together. We’ll go from the worst to the best episodes in this list. Enjoy.

The Grand Tour Presents: Seamen

This was possibly one of the least liked specials from The Grand Tour, with fans complaining about a lack of storyline and a severe lack of cars. Clarkson, Hammond, and May boat from Siem Reap, Cambodia to Vũng Tàu, Vietnam, on the Mekong Delta. May brought a 1939 Wooden Cruiser, Hammond a Scarab, and Clarkson brought a custom-built PBR.

Interestingly, this was the first episode without the usual writer Richard Porter behind the script and was the first to really come under negative criticism from fans. While there’s a definite correlation here, it was also the first full episode of The Grand Tour without the tent. It may have been too much of a change from the previous season.

Executive Producer Andy William found the change of format very challenging . He told BT the following:

“We’ve always tried to make a special feel special,” he said. “If you look back at the Top Gear ones, they started at an hour. Then they became 90 minutes. Then some of them became two-parters. None of that was planned. The key thing is the 90 minutes. That’s the biggest thing that beats you around the head. “A 90-minute special needs a narrative. In an hour you can piss around more. Just jump around like children with too much sugar. But these longer specials need a journey and narrative, which is added pressure.”

Moscow Metro

Introduction of moscow subway system (metro).

Richly Decorated Central Hall of Novokuznetskaya Station

Nowadays the Moscow Metro has 12 lines, light subway and monorail. All stations are unique and beautiful in their own way. Unfortunately, in order to visit them all, you need to spend many days. I invite guests to visit the ones that have the greatest cultural and historical interest from my point of view. Among them are the Revolution Square, Arbatskaya, Kievskaya (Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya Line № 3); Kievskaya, Belarusskaya, Novoslobodskaya, Komsomolskaya (the Ring line number 5). Let us dwell a bit on each.

Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya Line

Subway station "revolution square".

Sign “Ploshchad Revolyutsii” in Archway with Bronze Figures

Most recently - in the year 2008-2010 – the Eastern lobby was renovated. Because of the terrorist attacks in the Moscow subway that took place several hours before the planned opening of the East lobby after renovation, the solemn part of the event was canceled.

Subway station Arbatskaya

Subway Arbatskaya is located on the same subway line as the station "Revolution Square." It was founded in 1953. It received the name in honor of the Arbat Street. It has one ground lobby (Western). Initially, the lobby was in a separate building, but the new building of the General Staff of the Ministry of Defense started, the lobby appeared to be in its atrium. The old exits were bricked up; a new entrance was built into the building of General Staff of the street Vozdvizhenka. There is a huge frame with a missing portrait in the ground lobby - until mid-1950 there was a portrait of Stalin. According to some reports, it survived, but closed with plaster.

The lobby was restored and partially reconstructed in 2007-2008.

The depth of the station is 41 meters.

Pylons are finished with red marble at the bottom, decorated with bouquets of flowers made from ceramics. The floor is laid out with gray granite. The walls lined with glazed ceramic tiles, white top and black bottom. The station hall is illuminated by massive bronze chandeliers in the form of rings.

Subway station Kievskaya

There are several subway stations "Kievskaya" in Moscow, located on different branches. This name is quite popular. It comes from the capital of Ukraine - one of Russia's nearest neighbors - the city of Kiev. The name is fully consistent with the idea of the subway station. The interior the station devoted to Soviet Ukraine and the reunification of Ukraine and Russia. The station is decorated with a large number of paintings .Twenty four murals depicting workers of Soviet Ukraine are placed on the arch above the pylons. The wall from the side of platform also contains frescos, mainly with images of fantastic plants. Pylons are decorated with light marble and additionally decorated with colorful ceramic cornice. The butt of the station has a large mosaic, depicting festivities to celebrate the 300 anniversary of the reunification of Ukraine and Russia.

Opened in 1953, this subway station for a long time was the final (1953-2003).

The station has one lobby, combined with the station ring line and located in the building of the Kievskaya railway station. The diameter of the central hall station is 9.5 m, the diameter of side one is 8.5 m. The depth of the station is 38 meters.

= Ring Line Subway =

It opened in 1954. The station received its name after the Kiev station, and locked the Ring line. During the construction of the station many projects were proposed, but the victory in the competition won the Kiev architects who made the construction of the station. It is the only station of the Ring Line which is not located in the Central Administrative District of Moscow.

The station has a pylon structure. Eighteen pylons are decorated with mosaic panels of glazes, decorated on the theme of Ukrainian history and friendship between the Ukrainian and Russian peoples, which started in the mid-17 century.

On the front wall of the central hall of the station a large panel with molding in the form of flags and a mosaic portrait of Lenin in the center are located. There are lines of the Soviet national anthem around the portrait, and under the portrait - the words of Lenin. One of the ways out of the station was designed by French architects modeled on the Paris Subway in 2006.

At one of the mosaics – “The Struggle for Soviet power in Ukraine "- modern passengers observe a mobile phone and PDA in the hand of one of the guerrillas, and on his knees - a laptop. In fact, he uses a field telephone, which was really a heavy thing (guerrillas holds it in two hands), and thing that people see a laptop is the lid of a box with a telephone. However, these phones have begun to produce only in the second half of the 20-ies of XX century. We must assume that the mosaic depicts a foreign field telephone transmitter.

Subway station Belorusskaya

The founded of the station was in 1952. It received the name after the Belarusian railway station nearby. The station has two ground-based lobbies. The Western one goes to Tverskaya  Zastava. It is decorated with beautiful carvings. The Eastern one leads to Butyrskiy shaft and Forest Street. The Eastern lobby is known for its majolica panels.

The station Belorusskaya is located at a depth of 42.5 m below ground. The diameter of the central hall is 9.5 meters.

Pylons are faced with light marble. The walls lined with white ceramic tiles, the floor is covered with ceramic tiles, gray, white and red colors. Lamps placed on pylons, in the form of vases made of glass and marble. The theme of decoration is economy and culture of Belarus. Decorative pattern on the floor repeats the theme of traditional Belarusian embroidery. Decorations of the ceiling consist of stucco decorations and 12 mosaic panels depicting the life of the Belarusian people.

Subway station Novoslobodskaya

Built in 1952, Subway station Novoslobodskaya got its name from the eponymous street:  the station is located at the very beginning of it.

Novoslobodskaya is pylon station of deep foundation (its depth is 40 m) with three arches.

Exit to the street is through the ground lobby with column portico, located on Novoslobodskaya Street lined with gray marble. Pylons of the underground station are faced with marble from the Urals. Thirty two spectacularly illuminated stained-glasses, placed inside the pylon and bordered by steel and gilt brass are splendid decoration of the station. A remarkable mosaic "World Peace" is located at the end of the central hall. The picture depicts a happy mother with a baby in her arms; it was the face of Stalin at the picture: the child gave a hand to him. But in times of Khrushchev the face of the former leader of USSR was removed from the panel. The walls are lined with bright marble; floor is covered with white and black granite slabs, placed in a checkerboard pattern.

Subway station Komsomolskaya

The station was built in 1952 and named in honor of the Komsomolskaya Square, which is situated nearby.

This subway station is the station of the deep bedding. Its depth is 37 meters. The station has column and three- arched design. Cast iron decoration is used in the construction, monolithic slab used as a tray for a collapsible finishing. The length of the boarding hall is 190 meters; width of it is 10 meters. There are 68 octagonal columns at station.

The main theme of the interior of the station is the fighting of the Russian people for their independence. The ceiling is decorated with eight station mosaic mural made from glazes and precious stones. Six of them represent the Alexander Nevsky, Dmitry Donskoy, Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky, Alexander Suvorov and Mikhail Kutuzov, the Soviet soldiers and officers at the walls of the Reichstag.

Two other panels, depicting Stalin ("Victory Parade" and "Presentation of the Guards Banner"), were replaced after the dethronement of Stalin's personality cult in 1963. New panels depict Lenin's speech in front of the Red Guards and the Motherland on the background of the Kremlin's Spasskaya Tower.

The yellow ceiling is decorated with mosaic and moldings. The hall is illuminated by massive chandeliers hanging between the panels; platforms are illuminated with smaller chandeliers. The columns are decorated with marble capitals and trimmed with light marble, as well as the wall station. The floor is laid with pink granite. There is a bust of Lenin at the end of the hall. At the opposite end of the escalator is a large Florentine mosaic of the Order of Victory with red banners on the background. The ground lobby of the station is decorated with bas-reliefs.

In conclusion...

Each of the stations of the Moscow subway is attractive and interesting in its own way. Each has its own long and fascinating history and is beautifully decorated. The Moscow subway is a whole world, which can be talking about for hours. I suggest you short - no more than one hour and a half - and a fascinating journey through the world of the Moscow subway. The pleasure is guaranteed!

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

The 8 Best Men’s Hiking Boots and Shoes for Any Terrain

17 testers tried 41 hikers. these came out on top..

Trail running shoes are the most popular footwear on-trail these days, which may lead you to think traditional hiking boots are on the way out. Our big test this year suggests something different: Most of the 41 models we tested proved emphatically that proper hiking boots and shoes make backpacking easier and more comfortable, protect our feet and ankles, and stick to roots, rocks, and dirt.

But the push to go fast does permeate the entire market these days, which is great. It means lighter weights, a nimbler feel, and smoother striding, no matter the style of boot. The very best hiking shoes and boots for men—the ones that made this list—will help you walk with less effort, leaving you more energy to go further and faster while savoring the journey along the way.

Saucony Ultra Ridge GTX

Editors’ Choice

Saucony ultra ridge gtx.

$190 at Amazon $190 at Running Warehouse

Weight: 12.6 oz (men’s) / 11 oz (women’s) Sizes: 7-15 (men’s) / 5-12 (women’s)

Pros and Cons ⊕ Lightweight ⊕ Springy trail runner fit and feel ⊗ Lacks backpacking support

Trail runner-based boots tend to skew in one direction or the other—either they’re too light to support heavy loads, but feel great at speed, or they’re too overbuilt to move fast. One of the lightest high-top boots we’ve ever tried, the Ultra Ridge GTX might just be the first fusion to hit the bullseye. “It’s as comfortable as the most comfortable running shoe, but with the ankle support of a light boot,” gushed tester Patrick Lowkes after a 17-mile hike and run through New York’s Tongue Mountain Range. A Pebax-based foam insert in the midsole—the same kind used in bouncy, marathon-racing super shoes—is remarkably comfortable and lively-feeling underfoot.

It never felt squishy or unstable thanks to a firmer EVA frame below and around the insert and a lightly padded high-top that provides lateral support. It excels over a variety of surfaces: an unobtrusive rock plate prevents bruising while a grippy, durable, chevron-studded outsole digs into mucky and slippery surfaces. Testing them through a soggy New England summer, Lowkes says the Gore-Tex liner didn’t overheat in humid, 75-degree weather, deflected all-day rain, and emerged from a four-inch-deep mud puddle unsodden.

And there’s year-round utility, too. Outside’s senior running editor, Jonathan Beverly, found there was enough ankle height to keep snow and slush from spilling over the top. Backpackers who kept their weight under 30 pounds loved the Ultra Ridge GTX, but the soft upper cuff doesn’t offer enough support for heavier loads. For trail runners headed into crap weather, the boot-averse, and anyone else who ranks weight and spring above all else, the Ultra Ridge GTX is the most comfortable and speedy hiker we’ve tried.

Lowa Trek Evo GTX Mid

Best for Backpacking

Lowa trek evo gtx mid ($340).

$340 at Lowa Weight: 1.4 lbs (men’s) / 1 lb (women’s) Sizes: 7.5-14 (men’s) / 5-10.5 (women’s)

Pros and Cons ⊕ Excellent grip ⊕ Supportive ⊗ Expensive

Lowa calls the Trek Evo a fastpacking boot, but our testers swear its sweet spot is backpacking. It’s certainly energetic enough for moving quickly down the trail: For a six-inch-tall hiker, it’s relatively lightweight, thanks to an all-synthetic upper with just a thin TPU film for toe and heel protection. (Despite the lightweight construction, however, our sample still looks new after nearly 100-miles of testing.) Cutouts in the tongue and heel enhance the forward flex.

Even more impressive? As testers added pounds to their pack, the boots never wavered. The TPU midsole wrapped around the sides of the foot and worked with stiffer synthetic panels on the upper to cradle and support the ankle, while three open eyelets allowed micro adjustments. And the Vibram Rock Trac outsole provided reliable grip on a variety of surfaces, including rock edging and smearing. Climbing Vancouver Island’s Victoria Peak with a 30-pound pack, the boots provided a stable platform for mountain guide Bill Phipps. “They made me feel more confident, especially carrying a heavy load,” he says.

Meindl Eurolight Hunter Uninsulated

Best for Carrying Heavy Loads

Pros and Cons ⊕ Weatherproof ⊕ Off-trail performance ⊗ Tall and heavy

As the name suggests, Meindl designed these 9-inch-tall boots for hunting— which means they’re stellar for heavy loads and bushwacking. After plodding along logging roads, rolling down trails, and scrambling up steep hillsides, our testers say the Eurolight Hunters stand out in how nimble they feel for such a burly boot. The waxed, full-grain Nubuck leather upper with eight lace eyelets reaches well above the ankle, and a polyurethane midsole creates a stable base to carry more than 50 pounds.

Despite all that stability, the Eurolight Hunter isn’t particularly stiff—cutouts in the leather along the tongue and in the achilles area and gusseting allow for more flex and fluid movement. They required only a couple of day hikes to break in and were easy to pull on and take off, says JF Marleau, a sea kayak guide who tested them in the B.C. Coast Range while hiking and hunting. Bashing around off trail, the outsole’s deep round lugs and sharp edges provided excellent grip and stability in a variety of on- and off-trail surfaces.

Even more impressive was the Gore-Tex waterproof-breathable liner. While the all-leather upper got sweaty in temperatures above 65 degrees or when going hard, this boot was impermeable. “It was raining, and I had to cross many creeks,” says Marleau. “At the end of the day, my feet were dry and happy.”

Zamberlan Salathe Trek GTX

Best for Scrambling

Zamberlan salathe trek gtx.

$330 at REI

Weight: 1.1 lbs (unisex) Sizes: 7.5-13 (unisex)

Pros and Cons ⊕ Grippy ⊕ Waterproof ⊕ Durable ⊗ Expensive

Zamberlan’s Salathe Trek GTX is the new, mid-cut big brother of the popular Salathe approach shoe. The brand kept the foot-conforming suede upper (backed by a Gore-Tex liner), the to-the-toe lacing for a snug fit, a chunky Vibram outsole with smearing and edging sections, and a 360-degree rubber rand to protect against scree and rock gashes.

To handle pack weight and the uncertainties of route-finding, Zamberlan raised the ankle to six inches high with just a bit of foam for support. The extra height and waterproof membrane were appreciated in soggy conditions: The hydrophobic suede deflected melting snow while the Gore-Tex liner stood up to an all-day soaker. The liner also upped breathability, which was above average for an all-leather boot. (Testers noticed some clamminess above 65 degrees.)

To maintain walking flexibility, Zamberlan added a cutout at the ankle crease, which allows for natural motion in combination with a springy, lightweight, dual-density EVA midsole. “They felt light on my feet and springy on the ground,” says tester Jakob Schiller, who wore them scrambling in the Sangre De Cristo Mountains of New Mexico. There’s enough boot here for gear-intensive trips and backpacking, unless you load up with more than 35 pounds on the back, when an ankle roll starts to feel inevitable.

Otherwise, Schiller says, what stands out is the quality: thick suede leather, durable rubber rands, high stitch counts, and a resoleable design: “They’re built to last.”

Salewa Puez Knit PTX

Best Mountain-to-City Hiking Shoe

Salewa puez knit ptx.

$240 at Salewa

Weight: 1 lb (men’s) / 13 oz (women’s) Sizes: 7-14 (men’s) / 6-11 (women’s)

Pros and Cons ⊕ Out-of-box comfort ⊕ Versatility ⊗ Not stable enough for backpacking

The Puez Knit PTX Low is the rare hiker that can pull double-duty on a variety of trails and blend in seamlessly around town. For folks who care more about utility than looks, the upper is a knitted nylon and ripstop polyester that stretches to create a conforming fit. A waterproof-breathable membrane and full wrap rubber rand add water and scuff protection. A dual-density EVA midsole (partially made with hemp) adds stiffness and cushioning.

Wearing them right out of the box, tester John Waters climbed a steep, muddy trail, crossed hard-packed summer snow, and scrambled up rock slabs to snag a Vancouver Island peak without even the suggestion of a blister or hot spot. The outsole has big, chunky lugs covering most of the shoe, with a smearing area at the toe. It’s a versatile combo that shed mud and stuck to slick rocks. “They have amazing grip and awesome stability for a shoe,” Waters says, although their low cut and softness meant they were not up to overnight loads.

For around town, one tester found that the PTX Low’s were the perfect traveling shoe, cushioning miles of pavement wandering. Their earth-tone hues and multi-textured fabric helped them blend into the background for wearing into restaurants and shops post-adventure.

Oboz Katabatic Wind Low

Best for Speed Hiking

Oboz katabatic wind low.

$185 at REI $185 at Amazon

Weight: 12.3 oz (men’s) / 10 oz (women’s) Sizes: 8-14 (men’s) / 6-11 (women’s)

Pros and Cons ⊕ Cushy ride ⊕ Good value ⊗ No weather protection ⊗ Built for light-loads

As comfortable as a pair of runners, the Katabatic Wind Lows are made for going fast. Oboz borrowed tech from running shoes, including a forked carbon-fiber plate, nitrogen-infused foam (which is springier and more cushioned than typical EVA foam), and a rockered outsole. “So cushioned I never got sore feet and found myself wearing them all the time,” says Alabama-based tester Seth Kromis. On heel strike, the combo seemed to absorb energy, roll to the toe, and accelerate the foot into the next stride, says Kromis.

The mesh upper—highly breathable but not weatherproof at all—has TPU inserts along the forefoot for durability and in the heel for a touch of rigidity. “It’s the perfect balance of support and bounce that made me feel like breaking into a run,” says Bozeman-based Allison Bodznick, who used the shoes as trail runners and city walkers. The chevron-shaped tread pattern, enhanced by the proprietary sticky rubber compound, provided solid traction on a variety of surfaces. “I could feel the treads sticking to the ground like frog feet,” says Bodznick. These shoes are built for speed and will last a lot longer than trail runners, but watch that pack weight: even on a day hike, the Katabatic Wind Lows started to feel unsupportive when loads exceeded 20 pounds.

Asolo Falcon Evo Jacquard GV

Best for Weekend Backpacking

Asolo falcon evo jacquard gv.

$240 at REI $240 at Asolo

Weight: 1.1 lbs (men’s and women’s) Sizes: 7.5-13 (men’s) / 6-10.5 (women’s)

Pros and Cons ⊕ Lightweight ⊕ Waterproof ⊗ Poor grip in gravel

Don’t let the mid-height of these boots fool you—the Falcon Evo Jacquard GV’s are speed demons. For one, they’re lightweight, weighing eight ounces less than similarly-constructed hikers, thanks to a feathery woven polyester blend rather than suede or leather, and a coating of polyurethane along the base of the upper in lieu of a rubber rand. Webbing daisy chain eyelets and just a thin bit of foam cushioning around the heel and tongue cut even more weight.

The exception to the gram-counting? The midsole: A dual-density EVA that provides solid cushioning and stability. “They’re extremely comfortable,” says Lindsay Elms, who tested the boots over 30 miles of running, hiking, and mountain climbing around his home on Vancouver Island. “The boot responded well to quick changes in rough terrain and was malleable without being too soft.” There’s just enough structure for light backpacking and off-trail day hikes carrying up to 30 pounds.

Elms found the Vibram Megagrip outsole worked well in mud, dirt, and rock, but was less predictable in loose gravel and sand. The Gore-Tex liner, which rises nearly to the top of the boot, keeps feet dry when low cut shoes would be underwater. Durability is solid, but we don’t expect the lightweight material mix will hold up over the long term compared to the other mids in test—an acceptable tradeoff for such a lightweight boot.

Scarpa Moraine Low WP

Beefiest Low-Top

Scarpa moraine low wp.

$169 at Scarpa

Weight: 1.4 lbs (men’s) / 1.1 lbs (women’s) Sizes: 7-13 (men’s) / 6-10 (women’s)

Pros and Cons ⊕ Stability ⊕ Built-in RECCO locator ⊗ Heavy

Opting for an airy low-top doesn’t necessarily mean less stability and protection than a tall boot. The Moraine Mid WP is prime example: In addition to dual-density EVA cushioning, Scarpa added a nylon medial shank and a stiff TPU counter to the shoe, which wraps high around the heel. The Moraines don’t have the bouncy feel of a speedier hiker—they feel quite stiff, in fact—but compensate by smoothing out uneven ground and providing a surprising amount of ankle support for a low-cut hiker.

“They have boot-sized stability without the clunk,” says category manager Ryan Stuart. “After hard hikes, the added protection left my legs feeling fresher.” He found the Moraines were most at home on day trips, but he didn’t wish for taller boots (the Moraine comes in a mid height as well) while hauling a 25 pound load into Cream Lake on Vancouver Island or route-finding in Coast Range scree. And on a rainy fall hike, the oiled nubuck leather and recycled mesh upper, backed by a waterproof-breathable membrane, kept his feet dry. After more than 50-miles of use, the Moraine Low WP’s showed no signs of wear.

How to Choose the Right Hiking Boots

The most important consideration for hiking boots is fit. They should feel snug (but not tight) everywhere except around the toes, where you want a little extra room to accommodate foot swelling and to keep piggies from hitting the end of the shoe on downhills. All footwear brands come with their own idiosyncrasies—finding the exact right fit will take trial-and-error. So it’s best to try boots on before purchasing. Ideally, go to a brick-and-mortar retailer later in the day when your feet have swelled a little. Bring your favorite socks and a footbed if you prefer an after-market one. Once you’ve found a pair that seems to fit, resist the urge to hit the trail right away. Instead, wear them around the house for a few hours. This will give you an early sense of any issues while retaining the option of returning them.

Hiking Style

Before you start trying pairs on, think about the type of hiking you’ll be doing. For light and fast hiking, a lower cut and softer, more flexible midsole is preferable. For heavy pack loads or mountainous terrain, an above-the-ankle boot and stiffer midsole may work better. These burlier boots often have shanks and heel counters, which add even more rigidity and support. Many boots and trail runners also come with a rock plate for protection from bruising on sharp trail protrusions.

Environment

Finally, focus on trail conditions and environment. For rainy or wet trails, a waterproof membrane will keep your feet dry. For a dedicated summer hiker or for hot and dry conditions, a mesh boot will breathe considerably better and dry out quickly. Turn the boot over and look at the outsole pattern. Most lug patterns offer versatile grip, but in general, wet trails benefit from a deeper and wider lug pattern, which digs into and sheds mud better. A sharp inside edge and lug-less smearing zone around the toe help with scrambling on rock and slabs.

Mostly we just let our testers do what they do best: walk. We called in 41 different hiking boots and shoes and handed them out to 17 testers with instructions to put on some serious miles. They took short hikes and 30-mile backpacking trips, on-trail and off. They scrambled up peaks and down canyons, logging more than 700 miles in total. As they trekked along, we asked them to consider everything from fit to grip, cushioning to stability. Because pack weight can influence all these variables, we had them hike with both light loads and heavy packs. And to understand how boots and shoes performed in different weather conditions and environments, we spread testers and samples across the continent, from coastal British Columbia to New England’s windy summits.

Meet Our Lead Testers

Ryan Stuart has been lacing up for more than 30 years. Growing up in Alberta, Canada, he started hiking as a teenager on the world class trails of Banff National Park, before moving on to the coastal hikes and lonely mountain trails of Vancouver Island, where he now lives. His hiking resume spans the world, from Australia to Ireland, northern Canada to the U.S. southwest.

Lindsay Elms was running ultra races and knocking off Fastest Known Times long before they were trendy. Originally from New Zealand, he’s lived on Vancouver Island for more than 30 years. He reckons he logged more than 50 hours of trail time testing hiking boots this year.

Podcaster and photographer Adam Sauerwein (@mradamx) lives out of his van, which makes it easy for him to do a lot of hiking. Like a lot. The host of The Pursuit podcast, he estimates he trekked more than 250 miles in two months of testing, mostly in upstate New York, but also in Pennsylvania and Arizona.
