3. FWD Travel Insurance

FWD travel insurance offers some of the cheapest travel insurance plans in Singapore, so this is a budget-friendly option which still offers you great value for every dollar. I like that coverage for emergency medical evacuation is unlimited for all tiers, and overseas medical expenses go up to a generous $1,000,000 (which is about as high as it gets).

Here’s a quick run-through of the price and benefits offered by FWD travel insurance plans:

When you’re purchasing FWD travel insurance, the COVID-19 benefits are an add-on. The price of the COVID-19 add-on costs between $11 to $22  depending on the part of the world you’re travelling to. If you choose to add it on, it’ll give you comprehensive coverage of the following:

  • Trip disruption
  • Trip cancellation
  • Overseas hospital cash
  • Hospital cash while in Singapore
  • Medical expenses
  • Emergency medical evacuation and repatriation

The plan reimburses your travel-related expenses if you are diagnosed with COVID-19 no more than 30 days before your scheduled departure date, or if you have to change your itinerary because of a COVID-19 diagnosis while overseas. You also get to claim medical expenses and a hospital cash benefit if you get hospitalised overseas or for up to 14 days in Singapore upon your return.

On top of that, there’s also an automatic policy extension of up to 21 days should you be prevented from travel as per foreign government regulations due to:

  • You contracting COVID-19; or
  • You or your travel companion needing to be self-isolated due to being in close contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19

4. Starr Travel Insurance

Starr’s travel insurance   Starr TraveLead Comprehensive is a leader in terms of how customisable their insurance is. When signing up, medical coverage (including COVID-19 coverage) is automatically included in all plans, but you can choose whether or not you want to add trip coverage (e.g. document loss, travel delay) and baggage coverage (e.g. baggage delay). Then, you can also easily add riders for Golf Protection, Cruise Vacation, Scuba Diving, and Snow Sports.

Starr TraveLead Comprehensive comes in 3 tiers: Gold , Silver and Bronze . While all are pretty comprehensive (as the name suggests), we advise you go for at least Silver . This affords you $500,000 overseas medical coverage, as well as $30,000 medical coverage for COVID-19 and $250 coverage for COVID-19 related trip curtailments and cancellations. You won’t get the COVID-19 trip curtailment/cancellation coverage in the Bronze plan, which only offers $15,000 for COVID-19 medical coverage. Better be safe and  go for Silver or Gold.

Here are the prices and coverage amounts for each tier. Prices are given with trip coverage included in the plan.

Note: Starr also has a travel insurance called Starr TraveLead Essential, which also comes in Bronze , Silver and Gold tiers. They look very attractive because of their low prices—for example, Starr TraveLead Essential Bronze costs just $20 for a 7-day trip to an ASEAN destination.

However, unless you’re on a really tight budget, I wouldn’t recommend these plans because of their more limited coverage. For example, while the Starr TraveLead Essential Bronze plan does cover you for $200,000 worth of overseas medical expenses (which is already the bare minimum), it doesn’t cover you at all for trip cancellation and loss/damage of baggage. Neither do the Silver or Gold tier plans.

5. MSIG Travel Insurance

MSIG travel insurance is categorised into 3 plans— Standard , Elite , and Premier . The cheapest, basic plan still offers pretty adequate coverage in medical emergencies and trip cancellations or delays.

Here’s a quick run-down of the plan’s key benefits:

One more unusual area of coverage that MSIG includes is emergency dental expenses. You get $5,000 to $15,000 in coverage, depending on the travel insurance tier you select.

MSIG’s Areas A and B refer, roughly speaking, to ASEAN and Asia respectively. Here’s a more comprehensive list of the countries in each category:

  • Area A : Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam
  • Area B : Australia, China (excluding Inner Mongolia and Tibet), Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, Macau, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and including countries in Area A
  • Area C : Worldwide

MSIG Travel Insurance’s COVID-19 coverage is an automatic inclusion to its travel insurance plans and offers the following coverage:

  • Trip cancellation, postponement, shortening, disruption
  • Replacement of traveller
  • Overseas medical expenses
  • Emergency medical evacuation
  • Overseas quarantine daily cash allowance

This is quite a decent list of benefits, but do note that daily hospital cash allowance is missing from the list.

6. Singlife Travel Insurance

Singlife travel insurance comes in 3 tiers— Lite , Plus , and Prestige . The price you pay and the coverage you’ll get increase with each plan.

Here are Singlife travel insurance’s key prices and benefits:

On top of the coverage above, Singlife also covers you for chiropractor and/or chinese physician treatment : $250 ($50 per visit) for Lite, $500 ($75 per visit) for Plus, and $1000 ($100 per visit) for Prestige.

As far as COVID-19 coverage goes, here’s a quick run-down:

  • Emergency medical evacuation, repatriation
  • Overseas quarantine allowance
  • Trip cancellation, postponement, interruption

While Singlife travel insurance’s coverage for non-COVID medical expenses, travel delay and trip cancellation is comprehensive, we have to dock some points for the lack of overseas hospital cash allowance and pretty low COVID-19 trip cancellation coverage.

Also, do note that the lowest tier, Lite, doesn’t come with certain coverage, such as trip cancellation or postponement for any reason and COVID-19 overseas quarantine allowance.

7. Etiqa Travel Insurance

Do you hate making travel insurance claims? I do. That’s why when a friend of mine told me that you don’t need to make any claim on Etiqa to receive compensation for your flight delay, I was very intrigued.

I’ve been fortunate—all my recent flights have left on time. But from what I’ve heard from friends who weren’t as lucky on their recent travels, it’s true that Etiqa has the most seamless claim process for flight delays . All you need to do is enter your flight details when purchasing your insurance. Etiqa will monitor your flight and know if your flight is delayed (to count as a delay, it needs to be pushed back at least 3 consecutive hours). If that happens, they’ll transfer money into your Etiqa TiqConnect eWallet—even if you don’t submit a claim! You can then encash that sum via PayNow.

On top of this travel delay claim benefit, Etiqa also provides flight check-in reminders and baggage belt collection details via SMS when you land. I’ve experienced this myself when I bought Etiqa’s travel insurance for my trip to the UK this year. Now that’s what I call service.

Etiqa’s travel insurance is called Tiq Travel Insurance  and comes in 3 tiers: Tiq Entry , Tiq Savvy , and Tiq Luxury . Here are their costs and coverage components:

Tiq Entry is sufficient to give you essential coverage for travel disruptions. But if you’ve just a little more to spend, go for Tiq Savvy . This will more than double your coverage limit for overseas medical expenses from $200,000 to $500,000 for just an additional $5 a week—that’s less than $1 a day.

Comprehensive COVID-19 add-on, protecting you before, during and after your trip

Covers Cruise to Nowhere

Get paid upon a 3-hour flight delay, even without submitting a claim

Instant claims encashment via PayNow

24-hour worldwide emergency travel support

The only disadvantage to Tiq travel insurance is that COVID-19 coverage is not included in the base price and you’ll have to pay for their optional  COVID-19 Add-On to be covered. Some people might say this is an advantage—it gives you a greater degree of flexibility to decide if you want to have COVID-19 coverage or not, especially as COVID-19 becomes less and less prevalent. However, the fact remains that you need to pay extra for it compared to travel insurance plans where COVID-19 coverage is already included.

Here’s how much the COVID-19 Add-On will cost for a 7-day trip:

To be covered for travel disruptions and medical expenses related to COVID-19, you’ll need to add the costs above to the base Tiq travel insurance prices.

8. Cheapest travel insurance in Singapore

When I buy travel insurance, I don’t really care whether the insurer has 900 years of experience or if the plan comes with extra coverage for Chanel bags. Just give me the cheapest travel insurance plan can  l iao !

If that sounds like you too, you’ll be glad to know we’ve done the legwork for you. After assessing the most popular travel insurers in Singapore, the honour of cheapest travel insurance in Singapore goes to… FWD travel insurance .

FWD Premium

Optional add on coverage available for pre-existing Medical Conditions for Single Trips plans (up to 30 days) with S$50,000 coverage for medical expenses incurred overseas and 50% co-payment for trip cancellation, postponement and more!

But as the old saying goes, you get what you pay for. Will you regret being a cheapskate and lose out on important coverage if the only number you look at is the price?

In a way, yes. Because FWD travel insurance is only the cheapest option with 2 caveats.

Firstly, travel insurers have limited-time discounts all the time. This is no secret. It does, however, make it difficult to compare prices when an expensive plan is on 40% off but a cheaper one is on 10% off. That’s why for the table above, we compared base prices without discounts .

But when you take into account promotional prices, which plan is the cheapest? There’s no need to open a million tabs to compare every travel insurance plan out there. Just use our travel insurance comparison tool with the “Lowest Price” filter  on. You’re welcome!

The second caveat is this: FWD came out the cheapest when we looked at its price  without its COVID-19 add-on. If you’re looking for a travel insurance plan that includes coverage for disruptions due to COVID-19 (which you should!), the real winners are  Amex travel insurance and  Starr travel insurance .

Starr TraveLead Comprehensive Bronze

Personalise your travel insurance-Flexible coverage allows you to create a travel insurance plan with different types of coverage and addon that can adapt to your needs

Overseas Covid-19 related medical expenses of up to $15,000 SGD included (Excluding China).

Covers travel expenses for sending back an unattended child during the hospitalisation of the insured person

At the end of the day, ask yourself what specific travel insurance coverage you want to have, and assess the travel insurance options to find one that suits your needs.

Need some help? Read our travel insurance guide to understand all you need to know about choosing the best travel insurance. Don’t forget to use our travel insurance comparison tool to seamlessly compare plans across different providers in Singapore. We also have a comparison tool for travel insurance in Hong Kong !

9. Does travel insurance cover COVID-19?

When the COVID-19 pandemic started, most insurers did not extend their coverage to COVID-19-related mishaps. (Read more here .) The pandemic was quickly considered a “known event”, which insurers usually do not offer compensation for. So, if your flight got cancelled because of COVID-19, you’d be out of luck trying to get your insurance claims approved.

Now that practically all travel restrictions are lifted, insurance companies are rushing for a slice of the pie. Since the virus looks like it’s here to stay, most insurers are offering coverage that includes specific benefits for COVID-19. Where COVID-19 benefits aren’t already included in the policy, insurers offer an optional COVID-19 rider you can pay for to add on to the existing regular coverage.

Read your policy documents carefully to see if COVID-19 is covered, and add it on if you need to.

10. How do I choose the best travel insurance with COVID-19 coverage?

COVID-19 coverage  can vary quite a bit from insurer to insurer . When you’re shopping for the best insurance policy,  there are 4 things you want to look out for when it comes to choosing the best travel insurance with COVID-19 coverage:

  • Medical expenses coverage

Do note that the plans still exclude travelling against a travel advisory put in place by the Singapore government or by the local authority at your trip destination. Meaning, if your destination country goes on red alert for COVID-19, visitors are highly likely to come into contact with the virus and your insurance is highly likely to reject any COVID-19 claims. So be sure to check announcements on both ends before you depart.

Another common exclusion is failing to take precautions against COVID-19. This is worded kinda vaguely in those lengthy insurance policies, but could include not following any COVID-19 regulations at your destination or on the plane. So make sure you wear your mask whenever it’s required (or even when it’s not, if you want to play extra safe) and don’t attend any illegal raves.

11. What do I do if I get COVID-19 during or after my travels?

First of all, when booking your trip, you should retain all receipts, tickets and itineraries in case your trip has to be cancelled or altered.

At the first sign of a COVID-19 infection or related travel disruption, you should call your insurer and ask for guidance. Many insurers maintain a 24-hour hotline for travel claims. Save that number before you depart Singapore so that you aren’t stuck somewhere without wi-fi or 4G to Google the hotline.

To make a claim , you will usually have to submit your insurer’s form with supporting documents by the deadline mentioned in your contract (usually 30 days). Don’t wait until you’re back in Singapore to check which documents you need.

If you catch COVID-19 while you’re in Singapore , you will likely have to submit the results of a PCR Swab Test or Antigen Rapid Test conducted at a clinic or hospital.

It gets a bit more complicated if you’re overseas . The insurer will likely require documentation from the hospital as well as a doctor’s letter stating that you are unfit to travel and/or recommending treatment.

If you need to be quarantined overseas , you should make sure you have a quarantine order from the government, otherwise you may not be able to claim for quarantine allowance. Remember to ask for this as not all countries automatically issue such documentation.

best travel insurance singapore 2023

After a multi-year pandemic, travel – especially for leisure – is finally returning to pre-pandemic levels. That means it’s time to look into travel insurance again, especially given that some countries require it before they’ll issue you a visa.

The right coverage will give you and your family at least a little peace of mind as you plan your vacation.

But what’s the best travel insurance package for you? We’ll get into that today, covering:

  • What to look out for in your travel insurance
  • An overview of popular travel insurance packages available
  • Our top 6 choices for travel insurance and why

How to Choose a Travel Insurance Package

If you’re a seasoned traveller, you already know that price isn’t the only consideration. You get what you pay for, after all. Here are five things to look out for before you decide on a travel insurance provider:

  • COVID-19 Coverage. Most insurers these days automatically include COVID-19 coverage, but the degree of coverage differs. Some offer barely enough to cover your medical expenses, while others don’t cover COVID-related trip cancellations or curtailments.
  • Coverage for personal items. If your laptop is damaged or you lose any pricey personal belongings, you’ll want to know that your insurance can cover that cost.
  • Coverage for travel or baggage delays. These can throw a wrench into your itinerary, especially for short trips.
  • Ease of claims. This is why it’s not a good idea to pick insurance purely based on cost. You can check customer reviews to get an idea of the provider’s service quality.
  • Coverage for activities. If you’re planning a skiing trip or any potentially risky activities, it’s good to check that your policy covers any accidents.

6 Best Travel Insurance Packages

We chose each of the following packages because they stand out in their own ways, whether it’s for comprehensive coverage for pre-existing conditions, the best coverage for COVID-19, or the best value for short holidays.

We haven’t omitted any for low coverage in specific areas – e.g. trip inconvenience – as these depend on the traveller’s needs. However, we’ve left out providers with largely poor reviews – this list only features insurers with decent customer service. (That said, no provider has a perfect reputation!)

Here are our top picks:

1. AIG Travel Guard

best travel insurance singapore 2023

AIG Travel Guard

AIG has a good balance of pricing, coverage, and responsiveness to claims – whether you’re claiming for missing baggage, an injury, or a sickness you contracted overseas. We’d recommend getting the Standard policy at minimum, as the Basic policy has many gaps.

Their COVID-19 coverage also includes an overseas quarantine allowance in the event you’re confined to a hotel while travelling. Many policies with automatic COVID-19 coverage leave this out.

Promotion criteria:

  • Single Trip:  Receive up to S$68 PayNow! (minimum premium S$100)
  • Annual Trip:  Receive S$188 PayNow! (minimum premium S$650)

2. DBS TravellerShield Plus

best travel insurance singapore 2023

DBS Traveller Shield

Underwritten by Chubb, the DBS TravellerShield Plus is a jack of all trades. It sits in the middle of the price range and offers average coverage for all the standard categories. Overall, it’s a well-rounded package.

There are two things of note with the TravellerShield Plus, though:

  • You can add coverage for pre-existing conditions
  • Its trip inconvenience coverage is higher than similarly-priced offerings

So if either of those holds more importance for you, this may be a good fit.

best travel insurance singapore 2023

You may have heard of FWD for its inexpensive, straightforward plans. Most people report that everything from getting a quote to filing claims is a smooth, convenient process that you can complete entirely online.

The downside is that FWD doesn’t have automatic COVID-19 coverage: you’ll have to purchase an add-on if you need it. Its trip inconvenience coverage is also far lower than the market average, though this may be inconsequential for backpackers or light travellers with flexible itineraries.

If cost and reliability are your main concerns, FWD is a great option to consider.

MSIG Travel Easy

Above-average coverage at midrange pricing: that’s what you’ll get with MSIG. This insurer also seems to take pride in their service. Most customers report smooth, fuss-free purchasing and claims processes.

And on top of higher COVID-19 and adventurous activities coverage, TravelEasy also insures wedding clothing – in case you’re planning your prenuptial photoshoot abroad.

Go for at least the Elite plan if you want cover for adventurous activities and/or wedding clothing and accessories. The Standard plan leaves out benefits like credit card fraud protection, golfer’s cover, and rental vehicle excess.

5. NTUC Income

best travel insurance singapore 2023

NTUC Income

Most plans covering pre-existing conditions exclude COVID-19 coverage, since the risks multiply exponentially when someone with comorbidities catches the virus. Still, that leaves you out of luck if you happen to have a pre-existing condition and want to tour the world.

That’s why NTUC Income is a strong contender: they cover both pre-existing conditions and pandemic-related claims. You’ll have to purchase a yearly plan if you want coverage for both, and each trip must be no more than 30 calendar days long.

6. Tiq by Etiqa

best travel insurance singapore 2023

Tiq by Etiqa

A member of the Maybank Group, Etiqa Insurance offers  a range of insurance products, including travel insurance, car insurance, and personal accident insurance.

Understandably, plans that cover pre-existing conditions charge a premium for doing so. That’s the case with Tiq travel insurance as well: you’ll pay more than double in premiums if you check the box indicating that you’ve got a pre-existing condition.

Still, Tiq manages to keep its plans affordable. The single trip Pre-Ex plans are priced $5 – 25 cheaper than MSIG’s policies .

And even if you have no need for Pre-Ex coverage, Tiq’s regular travel insurance plans also offer great value at wallet-friendly prices. Just note that the plans don’t include COVID-19 coverage by default, so you’ll have to purchase a rather costly add-on if you need it.

Current promotion: Receive an Apple AirTag worth S$45 with no minimum premium

Summary Table of Travel Insurance Providers

For the price quotations, we’ve used a hypothetical scenario of:

  • A solo traveller in his/her 30’s
  • An 8-day trip to Australia
  • At least $200,000 in overseas medical coverage (or the closest available package)

These starting prices are accurate as of 14 Aug 2023.

How to Choose The Best Travel Insurance?

How to Choose The Best Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is a critical aspect to consider when planning your trip. Since there are various plans from various insurance companies, you may be confused about choosing the best travel insurance in Singapore.

Here is a simple guide to help you in making the wise decision on how to choose the best travel insurance:

1. Assess Your Needs

To find your best-fit travel insurance, you must understand your needs. There is no 1 plan that can be the best fit for everyone since the criteria for each other are different. Let’s list some factors to help you determine which type of travel insurance you need.

Considering Your Medical Coverage

Let’s think about what is the major aim for you in buying travel insurance. Can you obtain compensation when your flight cancellation or trip is delayed? Or did you need medical coverage in a country with high medical costs to deal with accidental?

This is the scenario for you: When you are going on your cosy trip to Hawaii and doing some water activities, but unfortunately, your legs are broken due to the accident. According to the statistics, to fix a broken leg can cost up to $7,500 , and the average cost of a 3-day hospital stay is around $30,000, so can you afford these expensive medical costs during travel in the US?

The accident is unpredictable, the only thing we can do is have a solution plan to handle when the accident happens. Therefore, medical coverage must be considered when choosing your best travel insurance.

Type of Trip

Are you going on a short vacation or an extended backpacking adventure? The trip duration is crucial for determining whether you must purchase the annual plan or a single trip.

Besides, the trip’s location is a factor you must be concerned about. Most travel insurance companies in Singapore have category travel insurance plans by Asia and worldwide, not including Canada & US and Worldwide but included Canada & US. If you purchase the wrong travel insurance plan, it is useless to hold the travel insurance plan.

Activities During Your Trip

Other than the type of trip, the activities during your trip are crucial. Not all travel insurance in Singapore covers risky or adventure activities such as scuba diving or mountain trekking. If these activities are planned in your trips, you must ensure your travel insurance is covered.

2. Read the Fine Print

I believe most people don’t have the behaviour to read the terms and conditions or the fine print of insurance due to the insurance policy being too many words and complicated to understand.

Hence, you may be unable to claim your insurance, and you don’t even know the reason for being unable to claim. Here are the details you have to know for choosing your best travel insurance.

Understand the Coverage Details

You could be lazy to read the whole insurance policy, but you must be able to ask your insurance agents some questions. For example, “What is the travel insurance coverage” and “What does the travel insurance cover for and what is not covered for”.

In this modern era, getting travel insurance information and comparing it to a different plan is easy. After researching, you will better understand your travel insurance coverage details. Moreover, the more coverage details you know, the more protection you will gain during your trips.

Know the Claim Process

Understanding the claim process is also important, same as the coverage details. Coverage details are ways to protect our privileges, and the claim process is the way for us to ask for what we deserve, like compensation.

If you purchase with an insurance agent, he/she is responsible. Congratulations! your insurance agent will help you to complete the claim process and get the compensation you deserve.

If you don’t have an insurance agency, you have to handle your own claim. Also, you don’t know how the claim process works, so it may take a long time to finish.

The claim process will be complicated due to the various documents needed to prove it, and it will cause you to take several times to submit the documents.

Exclusions of Your Insurance

As for the coverage details, you must understand your travel policy’s exclusions clearly. There might be some exclusions on your travel insurance. For example, if you have drug behaviour or excessive drinking, it will be the exclusions reason to exclude your claim.

3. Consider Annual Multi-Trip Insurance

After the Covid-19 pandemic, most Singaporeans are planning a few time vacations. If you are the person I mentioned, you may seek the best travel insurance in Singapore. Then consider the annual multi-trip insurance.

Annual travel insurance is quite similar to single-trip travel insurance, but it is worth it for those people who travel more than 1 time. With annual travel insurance, you can save time on purchasing travel insurance for every trip.

Besides, the price of the annual multi-trip travel plan might be more economical than buying separate policies for each trip. For leisure or business, the annual travel insurance is the best choice if you’re a frequent traveller.

Types Of Travel Insurance Coverage

Types Of Travel Insurance Coverage

Various types of travel insurance coverage are available, catering to the diverse needs of travellers. I will list the details for each type of travel insurance coverage to help you find the best travel insurance in Singapore.

1. Emergency Medical Expenses Coverage

This is the most important coverage in travel insurance. It will help to cover unforeseen medical costs incurred while travelling, especially essential for destinations with high medical care expenses. You may need to seek higher medical expense coverage as your priority factors on your best travel insurance.

2. Trip Cancellation and Interruption Coverage

This is another privilege for the insured. If unforeseen circumstances force you to cancel or cut your trip short, this coverage will compensate for prepaid, non-refundable expenses.

The scenarios can be personal illness, death in the family or other emergencies. The compensation varies for different plans, and you can also consider this coverage to have a solution for unforeseen circumstances.

3. Lost Luggage and Personal Belongings Coverage

All accidents may happen to you, and travel Insurance is doing its best to protect your assets. Travel Insurance has set this coverage to compensate its customers for lost, stolen, or damaged personal items during the trip.

Besides, travel insurance in Singapore has some limitations on the compensation. There may be limited reimbursement amounts for specific categories of items, such as electronics or jewellery.

4. Flight Delay and Missed Connection Coverage

This is a very simple coverage detail, the travel insurance in Singapore will compensate for additional expenses incurred due to delayed or missed flights, such as meals, accommodation, and alternative transportation.

5. Special Activities and Sports Coverage

Most original travel insurance plans do not cover risky activities and sports. For example, scuba diving, skiing, or mountain climbing.

If you are willing to have this coverage, you are allowed to add on this additional coverage. Once your request is accepted, you will be covered for the special activities and sports. Relatively, you have to pay more premium for your travel policy.

Single-trip vs. Annual multi-trip plan: Make the right choice

Before choosing the best travel insurance, let’s find out the details of single-trip and annual multi-trip plans to determine which one you should pick.

Here is the comparison table between single-trip and annual multi-trip plans.

Single Trip vs. Annual Travel Insurance Cost Comparison

To make the right choice on a single trip or annual multi-trips plan, you must determine whether you are a frequent or infrequent traveller.

According to the travel insurance cost comparison, it is only different for the amount you have to pay. Therefore, I recommend that frequent travellers choose annual travel to save costs and time. On the contrary, a single-trip insurance plan is suitable and cost-effective for those infrequent travellers who will be travelling once or twice a year.

What to Take Note With Pre-Existing Conditions While Travelling?

Pre-existing conditions mean you have any disease or medical conditions before purchasing the travel insurance. This could include chronic illnesses, such as heart disease or asthma, as well as injuries from the past. You must consider how important the pre-existing condition might influence your travel and the policy.

1. Why Disclosure Matters

We must honestly disclose our medical conditions to the insurance companies before purchasing travel insurance. If you keep this information hidden, the insurance companies can reject your claim or refuse your policy.

Honesty to the insurance company is important, they have the right to refuse your policy after you notice you have hidden the medical condition. It also affected your trustworthiness in all the travel insurance companies in Singapore.

Not all pre-existing conditions are rejected by insurance companies, it will only cause your premium to be higher than usual. To ensure you have medical coverage during travel, the higher payment is worth it, better than getting a rejected claim or refusing your policy.

2. Travel Coverage of Pre-existing Conditions

Although the basic travel plan excludes pre-existing conditions, it will provide specialised policies to cater to these needs after you disclose your medical conditions.

Besides, the travel insurance companies may provide professional advice to you. For example, what to take note of during travel and what protection you can get overseas.

3. Necessary Medication and Documents Checklist

Ensure you have a copy of medical records, a sufficient supply of all your medications, and any special equipment you might rely on. Besides, you must check the regulations surrounding transporting medications across international borders to avoid the restrictions.

Once you prepare all the necessary documents, your medication can be brought even if restricted. Moreover, medical documents may save your life when you need to be hospitalised overseas.

How to Make Insurance Claim?

Although this is the knowledge we don’t wish to use, this is the crucial process all travellers must know. Therefore, we must understand how to claim to ensure you receive the compensation you’re entitled to. Here is the guideline on how to do it:

1. Gathering Necessary Documents

Gathering the necessary documents is the first step to initiating a claim for travel insurance in Singapore. Here, we recommend collecting the original copy as the necessary documents because most travel insurance companies in Singapore require the original copy.

The necessary documents can be photographic evidence of damaged belongings, receipts for unexpected expenses, or any formal reports, if required, such as a police or medical report. If medical assistance is needed, collect all relevant medical documents and invoices.

Besides, having a copy of your insurance policy helps you deal with the claim departments and saves time waiting for them to retrieve your policy details.

2. Filing the Claim

Once the necessary documents are in place, the next step is to file the claim. Moreover, you are available to download the claim form from their official website.

When filling out this form, it’s crucial to provide detailed and accurate information about the incident and the nature of the claim. Attach all the gathered documents to substantiate your claim, ensuring that the evidence aligns with what is stated in the form.

After completing the form and attaching the necessary documents, submit the claim to the insurance company using the method they specify: email, physical mail, or an online portal.

3. Follow-up and Settlement

After submitting the claim form, the travel insurance companies will take a few business days to process, and they will provide a reference or claim number for tracking purposes.

You must keep following the progress with the reference number in case the insurance company requests additional information or documents.

Once the company has finalised the assessment, you can check the claim state with the reference number. The claim can be successful or failure. If the claim is successful, you may receive direct payment, reimbursement, or repair/replacement of damaged items.

On the contrary, you have the right to know the reason if the claim is rejected. If unsatisfied with their reasons, you can leverage the company’s dispute resolution mechanism, which usually begins with an internal review and can be escalated if necessary.

You may be confused about choosing which travel insurance to buy in Singapore, but you must understand your needs before finding the best travel insurance in Singapore.

After reading this guide, you will have a greater understanding of insurance and be able to find the best travel insurance in Singapore.

Picture this: You’ve planned the perfect vacation, booked your flights and accommodations, and are ready to embark on the adventure of a lifetime.

But what happens if something goes wrong? What if you get sick or injured while abroad, or your trip gets cancelled last minute?

That’s where travel insurance comes in.

Travel insurance is a crucial investment for any traveller, providing peace of mind and financial protection in case of unexpected events.

But with so many options available, it can be overwhelming to choose the right policy. That’s why we’ve done the research for you and compiled a list of the best travel insurance options in Singapore.

In this article, we’ll break down Singapore’s top travel insurance providers, highlighting their key features and benefits to help you choose the best policy for your needs.

But first, let me clarify the difference between the different types of travel insurance available in Singapore.

Single Trip Travel Insurance vs Annual Trip Travel Insurance

When it comes to travel insurance in Singapore, there are 2 main options: single trip and annual trip coverage.

Single-trip travel insurance covers a specific trip, usually for a set number of days. This is ideal for people who only travel occasionally or have a specific trip planned.

On the other hand, annual trip travel insurance covers multiple trips throughout the year. This is a good option for frequent travellers or those who may take multiple trips throughout the year.

Both single-trip and annual trip insurance typically provide similar coverages, with the main difference being annual trips offering slightly more coverage and are more expensive than single-trip plans.

However, this article will cover the best single-trip travel insurance in Singapore.

  • AIA Around the World Plus (II)
  • Allianz Travel
  • FWD Travel Insurance
  • Klook TravelCare
  • MSIG TravelEasy
  • NTUC Income Travel Insurance
  • Sompo Travel (COVID-19) Insurance
  • Singlife Travel Insurance
  • Etiqa TIQ Travel Insurance (with Covid-19 cover)

Cheapest Travel Insurance in Singapore – Klook Travel Care Lite

klook logo

The basis for this comparison will be on the coverage for a single 25-year-old individual travelling to Thailand for a week and the lowest-tiered plan across all insurers.

We all know that Klook is one of the go-to platforms for booking popular attractions, hotels, and tours, but did you know they also offer travel insurance?

Underwritten by MSIG Singapore, Klook TravelCare Lite offers the cheapest travel insurance at only $27.65 for anyone looking for a short getaway from the hustle and bustle.

What’s more, Klook TravelCare also offers coverage for adventurous activities – which many plans don’t.

So, if you’re looking to get travel insurance at the lowest price, Klook TravelCare Lite would be the travel insurance plan for you.

Best Travel Insurance with Highest Overseas Medical Expenses Coverage – Singlife Travel Insurance Prestige

singlife logo

This comparison will be based on coverage for a single 25-year-old individual travelling to Thailand for a week and the highest-tiered plan across all insurers.

You can almost never predict what will happen when you travel to a foreign country, making overseas medical expenses coverage one of the most important factors for travel insurance.

This does not just apply to accidents you may face, it may also be unexpected illnesses, injuries, or medical conditions that develop which you may need hospitalisation for.

As you can see, we have a very clear winner in this category.

Singlife Travel Insurance Prestige  is the only travel insurance plan offering unlimited overseas medical expenses coverage!

Although its premium is much higher than some, it is less expensive than plans like AIG Travel Guard and AIA Around the World Plus (II), which have premiums over $100.

In these situations, it certainly pays to be safe than sorry – especially if it’s going to be a long trip.

One of the highlights of Singlife Travel Insurance is the ability to add optional covers such as overseas weddings & photoshoots, golf holidays, winter sports, and adventurous water sports!

So, if you’re looking for a plan that offers the highest overseas medical expenses coverage – you should get  Singlife Travel Insurance Prestige .

Best Travel Insurance for Those with Pre-Existing Conditions – Etiqa TIQ Travel Insurance Pre-Ex

tiq by etiqa logo

Most insurers in Singapore do not extend travel insurance coverage to those with pre-existing medical conditions such as eczema, diabetes, stroke, asthma, sleep apnea, cancer, epilepsy, or heart disease.

If you have any of those, what happens if you suffer a lapse or relapse of your medical condition during your trip?

And even if you had gotten other travel insurance before, you cannot make any claims because your condition would have been subjected to medical underwriting – pitting it as an incidence you can’t claim for.

Thus, you may want to look for travel insurance plans that offer coverage for pre-existing medical conditions, such as:

  • MSIG TravelEasy Pre-Ex
  • Etiqa TIQ Travel Insurance Pre-Ex

Let’s pit the 2 side-by-side to see how they fare.

This comparison will be based on a single trip coverage for a single 25-year-old individual travelling to Thailand for a week and the lowest-tiered plan across all insurers.

We will also be comparing some of the more notable benefits.

We would have to recommend Etiqa TIQ Travel Insurance Pre-Ex Entry (with Covid-19 cover) for this category.

I mean, it’s pretty obvious they have higher benefits when it comes to coverage for pre-existing conditions.

And if you have a pre-existing condition, why get lower benefits if you’re at a higher risk of needing higher coverage?

Plus, the COVID-19 virus is still highly prevalent – even  healthcare professionals  have mentioned that those with pre-existing medical conditions have a higher risk of developing complications if they have contracted the virus before.

So yes, although premiums are more expensive, you should consider a plan that gives you comprehensive coverage for pre-existing conditions and any unexpected situations should those conditions relapse.

Therefore, if you’re going on a trip and have a pre-existing condition, you can check out Etiqa TIQ Travel Insurance Pre-Ex Entry (with Covid-19 cover).

Best Travel Insurance with Highest Benefit for Loss or Damage of Baggage and Personal Belongings – AIG Travel Guard Direct Supreme

aig logo

This is one of the common travel inconveniences that any traveller can face, especially when you need your essentials to carry out your itinerary as planned.

I mean, what if you love to vlog on your trips? You would probably pack your camera and laptop for taking pictures and editing.

And what if you brought your brand new luxury bag or jewellery overseas for that ultimate #OOTD?

And of course, your travel documents and passport should also be with you.

What happens if the airport loses your baggage and all those personal belongings? What will you do then?

Thus, it is important to choose a travel insurance plan that covers you well for these situations, such as AIG Travel Guard Direct Supreme, which offers up to $10,000 for the loss or damage of your baggage and personal belongings.

Although it is the most expensive premium of $125, paying slightly more for higher protection should be the least of your worries when it comes to your essentials.

Especially if you carry luxury items or personal electronics such as your phone/laptop.

Thus, you should consider AIG Travel Guard Direct Supreme as your travel insurance if you’re worried about losing and damaging your personal belongings.

Best Travel Insurance If you’re Engaging a Travel Agency – MSIG TravelEasy Premier

msig logo

In this current business climate, companies like travel agencies can sometimes close down without warning and cause major inconvenience to those who book their tours or travel plans with them.

This had actually happened in  earlier years  with Five Stars Tours, which closed down abruptly and resulted in many complaints from travellers – seeing as they were unable to get refunds on deposits and prepayments from cancelled or postponed tour packages.

So, if you had booked your travel through a travel agency, this should generally be one of the factors to look out for in a travel insurance plan because you would have spent quite a lot on tour packages.

I mean, a 5D4N tour package for a single person to Thailand by Chan Brothers Travel already  costs about $1,138 . So, the coverage you’re looking for should be “sufficient” to cover the package cost.

In this case, MSIG TravelEasy Premier would be the one to look out for, given its highest coverage of $6,000.

Best Travel Insurance for Active Travellers – Etiqa TIQ Travel Insurance Luxury (with Covid-19 cover)

This one goes out to all those adrenaline seekers who love the outdoors and need a travel insurance plan to protect them should an accident happen.

In these cases, personal accident benefits should appeal to you most.

We can see that 5 insurers offer the highest personal accident benefit of $500,000.

But there’s one that stands out the most: Etiqa TIQ Travel Insurance Luxury (with Covid-19 cover).

And for 2 main reasons – it has the cheapest premium of just $43.20 and covers an extensive list of leisure and recreational type of holiday outdoor activities that most insurers don’t even cover!

Here is what’s covered in the TIQ plan:

  • Hot air ballon
  • Scuba diving
  • Skiing, and other ice/snow sports
  • Hiking or trekking
  • Marathons and other competitions (excluding ultramarathons, biathlons, and triathlons)
  • Paragliding, hang gliding, parachuting
  • Bungee jumping

We told you, it’s an extensive list!

And if you’re an active traveller, there’s bound to be an activity listed above that you would most likely partake in on your travel.

So to our adventure junkies and outdoorsy people, Etiqa TIQ Travel Insurance Luxury (with Covid-19 cover) is your travel insurance.

Best Travel Insurance with Highest COVID-19 Coverage – Allianz Travel Platinum

allianz travel logo

These days, COVID-19 coverage has become a norm in travel insurance since the pandemic. What this means is that you will be able to claim from your travel insurance if you get COVID-19 while travelling.

The table above shows that many factors are covered in case you contract the virus.

Which of these is actually important for you to consider when it comes to choosing coverage?

Well, it is likely that everyone in Singapore by now has gotten their vaccinations before they are allowed to travel overseas.

But that’s not to say you may not be infected by the virus, especially if that country you’re travelling to still has high infection rates.

So, if you get infected there, you may incur a huge bill when you seek medical treatment, as it depends on the country’s current COVID-19 measures and protocol at the time.

And what happens if you get quarantined there?

Thus, you should be looking out for the overseas medical expenses benefit and quarantine allowance from each insurer.

In this case, Allianz Travel Platinum takes the win for the highest coverage for overseas medical expenses at a whopping $1,000,000!

Guaranteed that Allianz’s overseas quarantine allowance isn’t the highest amongst the rest – but ranks the 2nd highest, it still holds a pretty high position.

Plus, if you need to be medically evacuated and repatriated, Allianz offers unlimited coverage for both cases!

Even though those factors are not as important (since you most likely only need them only once) – but it’s good to have!

Of course, that’s not saying that the overseas medical expenses benefits are all you should look at.

You should also look at the trip cancellation and postponement component because these are important for you to check if the coverage is “sufficient” to cover the cancellation cost of your air tickets, accommodation, and itinerary should you contact the virus before you fly.

If you’re concerned about this aspect, Allianz Travel Platinum is still your go-to travel insurance plan because they offer the highest coverage of $15,000!

Moreover, their premiums are not the most expensive compared to other plans that cost way over $100.

So, if you’re looking for a travel insurance plan that gives you the highest COVID-19 coverage on single trips, you should pick Allianz Travel Platinum.

Best Value Travel Insurance – Klook Travel Care Lite

When it comes to travelling, it is a common practice to source around for the best deals – and it shouldn’t be any different for travel insurance.

Plus, you’re already putting aside expenses for your short getaway trip, so why wouldn’t you want a travel insurance plan that will be a bang for your buck?

Thus, in terms of cost-to-benefit ratio, Klook Travel Insurance Lite stands out as the best value option for single-trip travellers.

It is definitely a worthy competitor even with it having the cheapest premium!

I mean, for just $27.65, you get

  • An affordable travel insurance to ease your travel worries
  • A reasonable extent of coverage for overseas medical coverage ($150,000!)
  • $200,000 for Accidental death and TPD coverage (which is comparable to some of the higher-priced plans like AIA and Singlife!)
  • Coverage for adventurous activities – which many plans don’t have!
  • A great and more affordable alternative to MSIG TravelEasy (since they are Klook Travel Insurance’s underwriter after all!)

So, you can really see why Klook Travel Insurance is a great value plan for short-trip travellers.

They also have 2 other tiers for you to consider – Essential and Deluxue for those with a bigger budget.

But one thing’s for sure, they will remain a value-for-money travel insurance plan.

In conclusion, having travel insurance is not just a smart choice, it’s a necessary one.

You never know what could happen while exploring a new place, and having that peace of mind is priceless.

With so many options available in Singapore, it can be overwhelming to choose the best one for you.

But by considering your needs, reading reviews, and comparing prices and coverage, you’ll be able to find the perfect travel insurance policy to protect you on your next adventure.

Safe travels!

FAQ About Travel Insurance to Singapore

Travel insurance typically covers trip cancellation, trip interruption, lost or stolen luggage, travel delay, and emergency evacuation. Some travel insurance packages also cover medical-related incidents too. However, remember that the exact coverage depends on the insurance policy.

Yes, medical travel insurance is almost always worth it, and we recommend taking out travel insurance whenever visiting a foreign country. Taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself in case you need medical attention during your stay. In general, we recommend VisitorsCoverage to travellers worldwide because it offers excellent value for money and well-rounded travel and medical benefits in its large catalogue of plans.

Health insurance doesn't cover normal holiday expenses, such as coverage for missed flights and hotels, but in case you run into medical trouble while abroad, it may cover some or all of your doctor or hospital expenses while overseas. However, not all health insurance providers and plans offer coverage to customers while abroad, and that's why it's generally best to take out travel insurance whenever you travel.

Although there's overlap, health and travel insurance are not exactly the same. Health insurance covers some or all of the cost of medical expenses (e.g. emergency treatment, doctor's visits, etc.) while travel insurance covers non-medical costs that are commonly associated with travelling (e.g. coverage for missed flights, stolen or lost personal belongings, etc.).

The cost of travel insurance depends on several factors, such as the length of the trip, the destination, the age of the traveller, and the level of coverage desired. On average, travel insurance can cost anywhere between 3% and 10% of the total cost of the trip.

A single-trip travel insurance policy covers a specific trip, while an annual one covers multiple trips taken within a one-year period. An annual policy may be more cost-effective for frequent travellers.

Yes, you can sometimes purchase travel insurance after starting your trip, but it is best to buy it before the trip begins to ensure maximum coverage. If you do need to buy insurance after you've started your trip, we recommend VisitorsCoverage , which offers a wide catalogue of online trip and medical insurance policies, most of which can be booked with immediate effect. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

Yes, you can most certainly purchase travel insurance for a trip that has already been booked, although we recommend purchasing insurance as soon as possible aftwerwards to ensure all coverage is in place before your journey begins. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

Best Value Travel Insurance in Singapore

  • Allianz Travel : .

For those people looking for the best combination of price and benefits in travel insurance, we recommend Allianz Travel's Silver plan, Singlife's Travel Plus plan or Income's travel insurance if you need COVID-19 coverage. Their competitive prices coupled with above-average benefits means they provide more value than most other travel insurance policies on the market. For example, while a plan covering a 1-week ASEAN trip has an average cost of S$44, these four plans cost between S$24-S$60 while also having above average trip inconvenience and medical coverage.

Allianz's Silver plan is great for people who prioritise travel inconvenience coverage such as flight delays, cancellation and lost baggage benefits. Allianz also provides coverage for pandemics and endemics, meaning you can get covered for things like cancelling your trip and medical treatment if you or someone related to you contracted COVID-19. Thus, though it is certainly not the cheapest plan on this list, it provides benefits that are most relevant in this climate and is well worth the price.

Out of the four, Singlife has the most flexible coverage and will allow you to get reimbursed for loss of frequent flyer points, motorcycling accidents, and extreme winter/water sports. It also boasts generous medical coverage. While not the cheapest, it becomes especially competitive for MINDEF/MHA customers as they will get an additional 30% off on top of any ongoing promotion.

Income offers above average medical coverage and average coverage for trip inconvenience benefits like trip cancellation, delays and baggage loss. However, Income's value comes from its up to US$100,000 medical expense coverage and US$100,000 evacuation coverage if you were diagnosed with COVID-19 during your trip (provided you did not travel to a high risk nation ). Please note coverage will only be in effect if you took the mandatory pre-departure COVID-19 PCR test 72 hours before your trip. All in all, if you are looking for affordable ASEAN trip coverage with a focus on medical coverage, Income will be a good option.

Allianz Global Assistance - Single Comprehensive Silver

For those people looking for the best combination of price and benefits in travel insurance, we recommend Allianz Travel's Silver plan, Singlife's Travel Plus plan or Income's travel insurance if you need COVID-19 coverage. Their competitive prices coupled with above-average benefits means they provide more value than most other travel insurance policies on the market. For example, while a plan covering a 1-week ASEAN trip has an average cost of S$48, these three plans cost between S$27-S$50 while also having above average trip inconvenience and medical coverage.

Out of the three, Singlife has the most flexible coverage and will allow you to get reimbursed for loss of frequent flyer points, motorcycling accidents, and extreme winter/water sports. It also boasts generous medical coverage. While not the cheapest, it becomes especially competitive for MINDEF/MHA customers as they will get an additional 30% off on top of any ongoing promotion.

Travel Insurance with the Best Coverage & Benefits

  • Allianz Travel: .

If you are relatively insensitive to price and are looking for a travel insurance plan with maximum coverage, we think Allianz’s Platinum Plan, Singlife's Travel Prestige Plan and MSIG's TravelEasy Premier Plan could be great options. Though they can be pricey, they are still priced competitively to other premium travel insurance plans on the market, while providing the leading benefits for travel inconvenience, medical or personal accident claims, respectively.

Allianz Platinum offers the most trip inconvenience coverage, making it ideal for travellers concerned about flight delays or lost baggage. As a point of reference, 60% of travel insurance claims are related to travel inconvenience, meaning this plan will provide valuable coverage. Lastly, it also offers two unique coverages for the current climate-pandemic coverage and cruise coverage. For instance, you may be able to claim for a trip cancellation if you or someone you know contract COVID-19 before your trip. Cruise travellers will also receive some of the best benefits on the market, like a cabin confinement benefit, a missed port of call benefit or a cruise coverage boarding denial benefit.

Singlife Prestige is recommended for travellers who care most about medical benefits, like to personalise their coverage, or who want to have the option to cancel their trip for any reason. Aviva also has a lot less exclusions than the average travel insurance plan, as it lets you purchase optional coverage for a variety of things from extreme sports to weddings.

Both Allianz and Aviva are also good options to consider if you will be going on a cruise, provided your departure port is from Singapore.

Lastly, MSIG TravelEasy Premier can be a great travel plan for families who want a wide variety of coverage without paying extra for it. For instance, MSIG's coverage automatically includes everything from rental car excess coverage to adventurous activities to wedding dress coverage. You will also be covered for pregnancy-related illnesses such as nausea and giddiness, which is a fairly unique feature considering other plans typically only cover pregnancy-related emergencies.

Allianz Global Assistance - Platinum

If you are relatively insensitive to price and are looking for a travel insurance plan with maximum coverage, we think Allianz Travels’s Platinum Plan, Singlife's Travel Prestige Plan and MSIG's TravelEasy Premier Plan could be great options. Though they can be pricey, they are still priced competitively to other premium travel insurance plans on the market, while providing the leading benefits for travel inconvenience, medical or personal accident claims, respectively.

Best Travel Insurance for Pre-Existing Medical Conditions

If you have pre-existing medical conditions and cost is not an issue, Income's Enhanced PreX travel insurance plans may be a good fit. Despite its 50% deductible if you claim for travel inconvenience (only available for the Prestige and Superior plans), it is currently only one of 3 insurers on the market who offer coverage for pre-existing conditions for you and your family members. Unfortunately, the Enhanced PreX plans can be quite pricey, with premiums for a 1-week ASEAN trip costing S$86 — almost 3x as much as the basic plan average.

Single travellers on a budget may save a bit more with MSIG's PreX Premier plan, which costs around 20% less than Income for a 1-week ASEAN trip. It can also be a good option for the elderly as there is no age limit for purchasing the plan. You can expect up to S$150,000 of medical coverage and S$200,000 of medical evacuation coverage due to your pre-existing condition. However, you should note that you can not buy an annual version of this plan.

MSIG TravelEasy Pre-Ex

Cheapest Travel Insurance for ASEAN Destinations

  • HL Assurance: Purchase a travel policy and stand a chance to win a flight ticket to a destination of your choice

We found Etiqa and HL Assurance offer the cheapest travel insurance plans for ASEAN travel. Their travel insurance policies only cost about S$22 to S24 for 1-week coverage in ASEAN, which is 30-40% lower than the industry's basic plan average of S$35. However, that's not to say their cheap prices mean modest coverage, as these four options also provide comprehensive benefits.

Etiqa's Tiq travel insurance offers cheap but high value travel insurance plans due to its generous ongoing promotions. It costs 35% less for ASEAN trips than with other insurers with its Basic plan. However, its total trip inconvenience coverage is the lowest of the four, so it may not be the best choice for those who want high coverage for things like flight delays, cancellations and lost baggage. Despite this, it can be a handy plan for budget travellers who want coverage for adventurous activities without having to pay extra.

HL Assurance travel insurance offers all-encompassing coverage for below average prices. It also includes useful benefits like home contents, rental car excess and travel agency insolvency coverage. HL Assurance's trip inconvenience coverage is also one of the highest for the price point, making it a competitive option for travellers looking to protect their belongings and itinerary.

Etiqa

We found Etiqa and HL Assurance offer the cheapest travel insurance plans for ASEAN travel. Their travel insurance policies only cost about S$22 to S24 for a 1 week coverage in ASEAN, 30-40% lower than the industry's basic plan average of S$35.

However, its total trip inconvenience coverage is the lowest of the 4, so it may not be the best choice for who want high coverage for things like flight delays, cancellations and lost baggage.

Its trip inconvenience coverage is also one of the highest for the price point, making it a competitive option for travellers looking to protect their belongings and itinerary.

Cheapest Travel Insurance for Asia Destinations

For trips in Asia (outside of ASEAN) to locations like Taiwan, Korea or Japan, we found thatFWD, HL Assurance and Etiqa generally offered the most competitive prices. Their single trip plans cost only about S$23 to S$27 for a 1-week trip to Asia, compared to the average price of S$45 for all of the basic plans in our sample.

Similar to our discussion for ASEAN trip policies, FWD's Premium plan is a good option to consider if you are planning on going on a cruise around Asia and want cheap but comprehensive trip coverage. It is also good for adventurers and those looking to maximise value for money as there are very little exclusions and above average coverage for trip cancellations, baggage delays and curtailment.

HL Assurance does not have outstanding coverage in one area or another compared to the other four plans, but it does provide solid benefits for a very competitive price. For instance, while it offers below average medical expense coverage, it does offer one of the highest per baggage item loss benefits.

Etiqa's Tiq Travel Insurance will consistently be one of your cheapest travel insurance options, especially if you are purchasing a plan on Fridays. In addition to offering comprehensive coverage for extreme activities like winter sports, Tiq also gives you the option to insure your sports equipment for an extra S$14, making it a good choice for budget adventurous travellers.

FWD

For trips in Asia (outside of ASEAN) to locations like Taiwan, Korea or Japan, we found that FWD, HL Assurance and Etiqa generally offered the most competitive prices. Their single trip plans cost only about S$23 to S$27 for a 1-week trip to Asia, compared to the average price of S$45 for all of the basic plans in our sample.

Cheapest Travel Insurance for Global Destinations

The cheapest travel insurance plans for worldwide travel (i.e. Europe, America, Africa, etc.) are the same as the were for ASEAN and Asia trips: FWD's Premium, HL Assurance Basic, Budget Direct Basic and Etiqa Basic.

FWD and Etiqa are great options because of their combination of affordability and generous benefits. For instance, adventurous travellers will benefit from FWD and Etiqa's Tiq Travel Insurance, which offers low prices but comprehensive coverage for a variety of adventurous activities including skiing and hiking (within limits). 1-week premiums for both single trip plans cost around 40% below average compared to other basic travel insurance plans on the market.

HL Assurance offers some of the highest trip inconvenience (cancellations, trip delays, baggage loss, etc.) coverage for the price point, making it beneficial for travellers going to brand new destinations. It also offers useful benefits like home contents, rental car excess and travel agency insolvency coverage. Despite the plethora of coverage, HLAS travel insurance consistently costs below average.

Budget Direct's Basic Plan tends to be the cheapest travel insurance plan on the market, though its benefits are also the lowest. For example, it costs around 60% below average and offers only S$900 of trip inconvenience (made up of personal belongings coverage) and S$50,000 of medical coverage. Because of its below-average coverage compared to more comprehensive plans, it is a good option for people going to familiar destinations to visit family or friends and only want emergency medical coverage.

BudgetDirect

Best Annual Travel Insurance Plans

Annual travel insurance insures your trips year-round, as long as your destination is within your insurance coverage. Given that 1-week coverage usually costs about S$40 to $70 depending on the region, we recommend getting an annual insurance for people who travel more than 5-6 times per year . Below, you'll find our top picks based on cost and value.

Cheapest Annual Travel Insurance

If you are looking for basic coverage for rock bottom prices, Budget Direct, FWD and Etiqa will be good matches. These plans cost 25-37% below average compared to basic tier annual plans.

FWD can be a good choice for travellers who care about travel inconvenience coverage and sports coverage (for accidents and equipment damage). It costs between S$161-S$214 per year during its ongoing 10% promotion, but if you catch FWD during a higher promotion it can easily become one of the top 3 cheapest plans on the market. Overall, if you are looking for an annual plan that doesn't break the bank and doesn't skimp on coverage, FWD will be the right choice.

While Etiqa's Tiq Entry plan has fairly modest coverage across the board, it is currently one of the cheapest annual plans on the market. While the rock bottom prices can be enticing to budget travellers, is worth pointing out that Etiqa also offers a plethora of valuable benefits. For instance, it offers coverage for adventurous activities and S$1 million of medical evacuation coverage — 30% higher than the basic plan average. Considering that evacuations are some of the most expensive claims, this can be a very valuable benefit for adventurous travellers and the elderly.

Budget Direct's Basic plan will benefit travellers who are looking for some of the cheapest annual plans on the market. Otherwise, travellers may not find much benefit due to Budget Direct's lack of trip cancellation and delay coverage and rather low medical benefits.

This graph shows the cheapest annual travel insurance plans in Singapore

Best Value Annual Travel Insurance

Though Allianz's Travel's Silver plan is one of the pricier insurers for Asia and Global annual trip plans, its unique coverage for COVID-19, cruises and 24/7 emergency services can potentially be worth the extra cost. Furthermore, Allianz Travel's Silver plan really outshines its competitors with its travel inconvenience coverage (coverage for cancellations, trip delays, curtailments, baggage loss, etc.). In fact, its S$30,000 of travel inconvenience coverage is significantly greater than the industry average of S$18,000. However, Allianz is quite restrictive in its exclusions, so you should be sure to read the policy wording before purchasing.

Singlife with Aviva's Travel Plus offers above average coverage for competitive prices and can be a winner for travellers who are looking for flexible medical and trip inconvenience coverage. For instance, its Plus plan also lets you cancel or change your trip dates for any reason, which is a unique feature among travel insurance policies. Additionally, you'll receive coverage for certain childbirth and pregnancy conditions, as well as S$2,000,000 of overseas medical coverage. Lastly, frequent flyers will also benefit from Aviva's frequent flyer points benefit, which lets you recover the points you spent on a trip you have to cancel.

Why Do I Need Travel Insurance?

Travel insurance will provide financial protection if anything were to happen on your trip. Think about how expensive your trip is and how long it took you to save up for it, especially if you're travelling with your family. Even a 3-day trip can cost several hundred dollars for a family of 3. Furthermore, some portions of your holiday may even be unrefundable like certain flights, hotels or excursions. Travel insurance will cover all the costs of your trip for a fraction of the price in case your flight gets delayed or cancelled, you lose your luggage or if you or your child gets sick and need hospital care.

How to Choose the Best Travel Insurance

Finding the right travel insurance can be simple if you know what you're looking for. First, you should figure out what kind of plan you need — either a single trip plan or an annual trip. Single trip plans are good if you travel infrequently while annual plans may be the more economical choice if you travel more than five times a year. Annual plans can also help you avoid the hassle of comparing travel insurance plans for every trip. Next, you should also determine your furthest destination to make sure there are no lapses in coverage. For instance, if you will be touring the ASEAN but will also stop in Japan, you should purchase an Asia coverage plan.

You should also take a note of whom you're travelling with, what you'll be doing and how that will impact the amount of coverage you'll require from a travel insurance plan. In general, travel insurance gets more expensive the more people you add to it, although some insurers may offer a slight discount if you are travelling with a group. If you will be travelling with your family, you should find a plan that is not only affordable, but also caters to your family's needs. For example, couples who like to do adventurous activities should find a plan that covers their active itinerary, especially if some of these activities run the risk of injury.

On the other hand, families with small children or elderly relatives should look for a plan offering generous medical and travel inconvenience coverage to cover any emergency expenses and minimise the burden of flight delays or lost luggage. Some plans even offer coverage for pre-existing medical conditions, which can be an investment worth getting to avoid a claim denial. A plan with good medical coverage, trip delay/cancellation and emergency assistance benefits can help get you through most travel-related emergencies if you're travelling alone.

When you know the basics of your trip and what kind of coverage you require, you'll be able to parse through travel insurance plans a lot easier. An important thing to note is that you shouldn't settle for the cheapest option every time. It may be worth paying extra for more comprehensive coverage if you are going to a brand-new destination or if you have medical issues. On the other hand, getting a cheap plan with simple coverage may be sufficient for a brief trip to a familiar destination.

What to Know If You're Travelling With Pre-Existing Conditions

As you may have seen above, some travel insurance plans will cover pre-existing medical conditions. Typically, these plans cost a lot more than plans that don't cover pre-existing conditions due to the higher risk, but they can be a lifesaver for people who will have difficulty travelling without these conditions being covered.

So what do insurers consider to be a pre-existing condition? It's a chronic injury or sickness that you have been treating in the past 12 months before you buy your travel insurance policy. It can also be an injury or sickness that you have asked to get medical treatment for by your doctor within 12 months of starting your trip or buying insurance. Some examples of pre-existing conditions are:

  • Heart Attack
  • High Blood Pressure

Even with pre-ex plans, some conditions won't be covered. This includes conditions that deteriorated suddenly and became a serious illness. You must also be getting treated for your condition and not refusing or delaying treatment, medication or testing. Lastly, you won't be covered if you had to receive treatment more than once for your condition at an A&E, had to stay in a hospital for more than 3 days in a row or had to stay as an inpatient more than once in the 12 months preceding your trip.

It's also important to note that you may not be covered for COVID-19 related claims if you purchase travel insurance for travel to these destinations.

As of July 8, 2021, several countries are experiencing increasing rates of infection and may be risky for travel. Singapore has multiple travel lanes that determine who can enter the country based on the traveller's profile and point of departure; further details on travel lanes can be found here . Upon arrival to Singapore, you may be ordered to serve a mandatory Stay-Home Notice (SHN), depending on your 21 days of travel history and PCR test results (which may be required depending on the risk level of the countries you travelled to).

If you are travelling outside of Singapore, please check with your destination country for their COVID-19 precautionary requirements. It's also important to note that if you are planning a trip and have recently bought a travel insurance policy, you may not be eligible for claims related to COVID-19.

No, travel insurance isn't mandatory. However, it is highly recommended if you will be travelling to new destinations or participating in adventurous activities.

You should buy travel insurance preferably as soon as you book your trip. The latest you can buy a policy is one day before your trip, although some insurers reduce coverage for cancellation benefits three days before your travel date. You can not buy a travel insurance policy after you have left for your trip.

While travel insurance policies generally have similar exclusions, some insurers may cover things that others don't. While we list some of the common exclusions below, you should still read the policy wording of your travel insurance policy to know exactly what is and isn't covered.

Each insurer has their own way of receiving claims. Most insurers have switched over to online submissions where you can upload and submit your claim and all your supporting documents. Some insurers even let you submit smaller claims through their travel apps. You also have the option to mail the documents. Travel insurance claims should be submitted within 30 days of your return. If you are unsure of the documents you need to submit, each insurer should have a claim submission instruction page that lets you know what they need for what type of claim.

Alternatives to Travel Insurance

If you want to purchase travel insurance to cover your trip, but do not want to spend extra on a policy, there are ways of getting free travel insurance coverage. For example, there are travel credit cards that provide free travel insurance coverage to their cardholders. Though some of these cards can get costly, the insurance packages included are quite comprehensive. For more information, we prepared a list with detailed analysis of cards with complimentary travel insurance .

Methodology

By collecting hundreds of data points from all the travel insurance offerings in Singapore, we were able to gain insight on dozens of plans offered by more than 20 insurers. The data we collected benefit coverages from personal accident, medical, emergency repatriation, trip cancellation, lost or damaged baggage, trip/baggage delays to sports coverage. We also collected pricing information for each product by destination country and by duration of coverage (1-week, 2-week and annual). To see all of the companies we analysed, please see the table below.

In order to arrive at our top picks for travel insurance, we looked at multiple factors. First, we considered the amount of money one is entitled to when certain events occur (i.e. medical and trip inconvenience). Then, we created a benefits to cost ratio to measure the value of each product. This measure is a proxy for how much an insured person gets for what he pays. We weighed each benefit area in terms of frequency of claims : travel inconvenience was given a weight of 60% while personal accident and medical benefit was given a weight of 40%.

The graph below illustrates how different companies compare based on the value ratio we utilised. This particular example assumes a 1-week trip within ASEAN region — however, this can vary for other regions and for longer trips, especially if you purchase an annual package.

11 Best Travel Insurance Companies in May 2024

Sean Cudahy

Many or all of the products featured here are from our partners who compensate us. This influences which products we write about and where and how the product appears on a page. However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list of our partners and here's how we make money .

If the past few years have shown us anything, it’s that travelers need to be prepared for the unexpected — from a pandemic to flight troubles to the crowded airport terminals so many of us have encountered.

If you don't have sufficient travel insurance coverage via your credit card , you can supplement your policies with third-party plans.

Whether you’re looking for an international travel insurance plan, emergency medical care or a policy that includes extreme sports, these are the best travel insurance providers to get you covered.

How we found the best travel insurance

We looked at quotes from various companies for a 10-day trip to Mexico in September 2024. The traveler was a 55-year-old woman from Florida who spent $3,000 total on the trip, including airfare.

On average, the price of each company’s most basic coverage plan was $126.53. The costs displayed below do not include optional add-ons, such as Cancel For Any Reason coverage or pre-existing medical condition coverage.

Read our full analysis about the average cost of travel insurance so you can budget better for your next trip.

However, depending on the plan, you may be able to customize at an added cost.

As we continue to evaluate more travel insurance companies and receive fresh market data, this collection of best travel insurance companies is likely to change. See our full methodology for more details.

Note that the Standard plan ($72 for our sample trip), while the most affordable, provides less coverage than other plans. But it can be a good choice for travelers who are satisfied with trip cancellation and interruption coverage of $2,500 or less, do not need rental car damage protection, find the limits to be sufficient and do not need coverage for certain more adventurous activities.

Comprehensive international travel insurance plans.

  • Only one plan includes Rental Car Damage coverage available as an add-on.

Tin Leg’s Basic plan came in at $134 for our sample trip, adding about $8 onto the average basic policy cost. Note that you’ll pay a lot more if you shop for the most comprehensive coverage, and there are eight plans to choose from for trips abroad.

The multitude of plans can help you find coverage that fits your needs, but with so many to choose from, deciding can be daunting.

The only real way to figure out your ideal plan is to compare them all, look at the plan details and decide which features and coverage suit you and your travel style best.

As you shop for travel insurance, you’ll find many of the same coverage categories across numerous plans.

Trip cancellation

This covers the prepaid costs you make for your trip in cases when you need to cancel for a covered reason. This coverage helps you recoup upfront costs paid for flights and nonrefundable hotel reservations.

Trip interruption

Trip interruption benefits generally involve disruptions after you depart. It helps reimburse costs incurred for flight delays, cancellations and plenty of other covered disruptions you might encounter during your travels.

This coverage can cover the costs for you to return home or reimburse unexpected expenses like an extra hotel stay, meals and ground transportation.

Trip delay coverage helps cover unexpected costs when your trip is delayed. This is another coverage that helps offset the costs of flight trouble or other travel disruptions.

Note that many policies have a total amount a traveler can claim, with caps on per diem benefits, too.

Cancel For Any Reason

Cancel For Any Reason coverage allows you to recoup some of the upfront costs you paid for a trip even if you’re canceling for a reason not otherwise covered by your standard travel insurance policy.

Typically, adding this protection to your plan costs extra.

Baggage delay

This coverage helps cover the costs of essential items you might need when your luggage is delayed. Think toiletries, clothing and other immediate items you might need if your luggage didn’t make it on your flight.

Many travel insurance plans with baggage delay protection will specify how long (six, 12, 24 hours, etc.) your luggage must be delayed before you can make a claim.

Lost baggage

Used for travelers whose luggage is lost or stolen, this helps recoup the lost value of the items in your bag.

You’ll want to make sure you closely follow the correct procedures for your plan. Many plans include a maximum total amount you can claim under this coverage and a per-item cap.

Travel medical insurance

This covers out-of-pocket medical costs when travelers run into an emergency.

Because many travelers’ health insurance plans don’t cover medical care overseas, travel medical insurance can help offset out-of-pocket health care costs.

In addition to emergency medical coverage, many plans have medical evacuation or repatriation coverage for costs incurred when you must be taken to a hospital or return to your home country because of a medical situation.

Most travel insurance plans cover many trip protections that can help you be prepared for unexpected travel disruptions and expenses.

These coverages are generally aimed at protecting the money you put into your trip, expenses you incur because of travel trouble and costs incurred if you have a medical emergency overseas.

On top of core coverages like trip cancellation and interruption and travel medical coverage, some plans offer add-on options like waivers for pre-existing conditions, rental car collision damage waivers or adventure sports riders. These usually cost extra or must be added within a specified timeframe.

Typical travel insurance policies offer coverage for many unforeseen events, but as you research to select a plan, consider your needs. Though every plan differs, there are some commonly excluded coverages.

For instance, you typically can’t get coverage for a named storm if you bought the coverage after the storm was named. In other words, if you have a trip to the Caribbean booked for Sept. 25 and on Sept. 20 a hurricane develops and is named, you generally won’t be able to buy a travel insurance plan Sept. 21 in hopes of getting your money back.

Many plans also don’t cover activities performed under the influence of drugs or alcohol or any extreme sports. If the latter applies to you, you might want to consider a plan with specific coverages for adventure-seekers.

For numerous plans, a few other situations don’t qualify as an acceptable reason to cancel and make a claim, such as fear of travel, medical tourism or pregnancies (unless you booked a trip and bought insurance before you became pregnant or there are complications with the pregnancy). This is where a Cancel For Any Reason add-on to your coverage can be helpful.

You can also run into trouble if you give up on a trip too soon: a minor (or even multihour) flight delay likely isn’t sufficient to cancel your entire trip and get reimbursed through your plan. Be sure to review what requirements your specific plan has when it comes to canceling a trip, claiming trip interruption, etc.

Travel insurance costs vary widely. The final price of your plan will fluctuate based on your age, length of trip and destination.

It will also depend on how much coverage you need, whether you add on specialized policies (like Cancel For Any Reason or pre-existing conditions coverage), whether you plan to participate in extreme sports and other factors.

In our examples above, for instance, the 35-year-old traveler taking a $2,000 trip to Italy would have spent an average $76 for a basic plan to get coverage for things like trip cancellation and interruption, baggage protection, etc. That’s a little less than 4% of the total trip cost — lower than average.

If there were multiple members in a traveling party or if they were going on, say, a rock-climbing or bungee-jumping excursion, the costs would go up.

On average, travel insurance comes to about 5% to 10% of the trip cost. However, considering many of the plans reimburse up to 100% of the trip cost (or more) for disruptions like trip cancellation or interruption, it can be a worthwhile expense if something goes wrong.

It depends. Consider the following factors that might affect your decision: You’re young and healthy, all your bookings are refundable or cancelable without a penalty, your flights are nonstop, you’re not checking bags and a credit card you carry offers some travel protections . In that case, travel insurance might not be necessary.

On the other hand, if you prepaid a large chunk of money for a nonrefundable African safari, you’re going on a Caribbean cruise in the middle of a hurricane season or you’re going somewhere where the cost of health care is high, it’s not a bad idea to buy a travel insurance plan. Here’s how to find the best travel insurance coverage for you.

If you’re thinking of booking a trip and not planning to buy travel insurance, you may want to consider at least booking refundable airfare and not prepaying for hotel, rental car and activity reservations. That way, if something goes wrong, you can cancel without losing any money.

Selecting the best travel insurance policy comes down to your needs, concerns, preferences and budget.

As you book, take a few minutes to consider what most concerns you. Is it getting stranded because of flight trouble? Having the ability to cancel for any reason you see fit without losing money? Getting sick or injured right before departure and needing to postpone the trip? Injuring yourself or falling ill while overseas?

Ultimately, you want a plan that protects you, your money and the large investment in your trip — but doesn’t cost too much, either.

Medical coverage. If your priority is having adequate medical coverage abroad, you might want to look for plans with high limits for medical emergencies and medical evacuation.

Complex travel itinerary. If your itinerary has lots of flight connections, prepaid hotels and deposits for activities you can’t get back, prioritizing a plan with the best coverage for trip cancellations or interruptions may land at the top of your list.

Travel uncertainty. If you’re on the fence about a trip and have nonrefundable reservations, you may want to select a plan with a Cancel For Any Reason coverage option, which can help you recoup about 50% to 75% of the costs. This helps provide peace of mind, placing the decision on whether to travel entirely in your hands.

Car rentals. If you’re renting a car, a collision damage waiver is often worth looking into.

The following destinations are the top insured destinations in 2024, according to Squaremouth (a NerdWallet partner).

The Bahamas.

Costa Rica.

Antarctica.

In 2022, travelers spent about 25.53% more on trips than they did before the pandemic.

As of December, NerdWallet analysis determined travel prices are 10% higher than pre-pandemic. Each statistic makes a strong case for protecting your travel investment as you plan your next trip.

Here is the list of travel cards offered by Chase that include various forms of travel insurance.

Having one of these in your wallet is a good start to protecting your travel investments and preventing expensive accidents; however, savvy travelers check card terms closely and sometimes supplement with a third-party policy, like from one of the companies above, to better protect themselves.

We used the following factors to choose insurance providers to highlight:

Breadth of coverage: We looked at how many plans each company offered plus the range of their standard plans.

Depth of coverage: We considered two data points to get a sense of how much each company pays out for common travel issues — the maximum caps for trip cancellation and trip interruption claims.

Cost: By looking at the costs for basic coverage across multiple companies, we determined an average cost for shoppers to benchmark plan prices against.

Customizability: While standard plans can cover a lot of ground, sometimes you need something a little more personal.

Customer satisfaction. Using data from Squaremouth when available, and Google Reviews as a backup, we can give kudos to companies with better track records from their clients.

No, it doesn’t necessarily get more expensive the longer you wait to purchase. However, as you put off buying insurance, you may lose access to potential plans and coverage options.

In general, buying travel insurance within a few days to two weeks of prepaying or making an initial deposit for your trip is your best bet. Assuming you’re not booking last-minute, this will provide you with access to the widest possible range of coverage options. It also helps prevent any medical conditions or storms that pop up between booking and buying a plan from ending up as excluded situations, which won’t be covered by your plan.

But, generally, many plans do allow you to buy coverage quite close to your departure date.

To get the most out of your travel insurance plan, buy it soon after making your initial prepayment or deposit to ensure you have access to the biggest menu of plans possible.

Select a plan that’s comprehensive enough to cover the travel scenarios you’re most concerned about or likely to encounter but not too expensive or laden with protections you’d never likely need.

Whatever your coverage, thoroughly review the plan so you understand what’s covered and what’s not, plus how to adhere to the plan’s rules for making a claim.

Travelers frequently use phrases like “trip insurance” and “travel insurance,” as well as “trip protection,” interchangeably, but they do mean different things, according to Stan Sandberg, founder of insurance comparison site TravelInsurance.com.

Trip insurance, or trip protection, generally refers to predeparture (or preevent) coverage if you need to cancel. You may see these plans sold by airlines, online travel agencies or even ticketed event sellers.

“You could refer to it as the portion that protects the investment in the trip,” Sandberg says.

A travel insurance plan typically includes that — plus more comprehensive benefits to protect you during your trip, from medical coverage to trip delay and lost baggage protections, and many more elements, depending on the plan.

Though travel insurance is typically not required for international trips, your personal circumstances will play a key role in whether it’s a good investment.

For instance, young, healthy travelers with few prepaid trip expenses embarking on a relatively risk-free trip may not see a need to buy a plan.

Older travelers with complicated itineraries who are visiting destinations where they could potentially fall ill or get injured — or who could encounter bad weather or some other disrupting factor along the way — may want to buy coverage.

Consider a few key questions:

How well would your health insurance plan cover you if you needed to visit a hospital overseas?

How much did you prepay for a hotel or rental car?

How much money would you be out if weather or some other flight issue derailed your itinerary?

Could you afford an unexpected night in a city where you have a connecting flight?

Do you already have a credit card that provides some travel protections?

Your answers to these questions can help you decide whether you need travel insurance for your international trip.

In general, buying travel insurance

within a few days to two weeks of prepaying or making an initial deposit

for your trip is your best bet. Assuming you’re not booking last-minute, this will provide you with access to the widest possible range of coverage options. It also helps prevent any medical conditions or storms that pop up between booking and buying a plan from ending up as excluded situations, which won’t be covered by your plan.

Travel insurance market set to reach $106.8b by 2032

The region showed the fastest-growing CAGR.

The travel insurance market is projected to surge with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 20.1% from $16.8b in 2023 to an anticipated $106.8b by 2032, according to Allied Market Research’s latest report.

Europe leads in revenue, buoyed by robust tourism and awareness of travel risks. Meanwhile, Asia-Pacific exhibits the fastest CAGR, driven by rising awareness and disposable incomes, particularly in countries like China and India.

The rapid growth in tourism, facilitated by online comparison sites and evolving travel regulations, propels market expansion. However, a lack of awareness about travel insurance policies poses a challenge. Nonetheless, product expansion and technological advancements offer growth opportunities.

In terms of insurance coverage, single-trip travel insurance dominates, offering comprehensive coverage.

ALSO READ: 41% of Australian travellers opt out of purchasing travel insurance

Yet, long-stay travel insurance is expected to grow rapidly due to increased demand from long-term travellers.

The insurance aggregators segment is poised for sustained growth, offering diverse policy options. Among distribution channels, insurance intermediaries lead with personalised services, while insurance aggregators show the highest growth due to their wide policy range.

Family travellers dominate the end-user segment, driven by the need for protection against unforeseen events. Conversely, business travellers exhibit the highest growth due to globalisation and increased corporate travel.

In terms of age group, 31-49-year-olds hold the largest market share, driven by active participation in travel and higher disposable income. However, the 18-30-year-old segment shows the highest growth, reflecting increased demand for adventurous travel experiences.

Travel Essentials Checklist For Your Family Vacation

T ravelling with your family may bring a whole load of fun but it also requires more extensive planning since you are dealing with more than your personal needs and preferences. Unlike vacationing solo or with like-minded friends which is more carefree, travelling with family often involves compromise and collaboration. On top of that, if you have young children or older family members with specific needs, you will need a considerable amount of planning to ensure everyone is safe and taken care of throughout the trip.

Planning an autumn or winter vacation for your family soon? We have prepared a family travel checklist and shortlisted some of the best family travel insurance plans that may give you peace of mind before you hop on the next flight out of Singapore.

What to look out for when travelling with a multi-generational family.

Recognising that people of different age groups may have varying needs and interests is the first step to achieving a satisfying family vacation. No matter how harmonious your family dynamic is, there are bound to be differences that stem from physical abilities, taste, health or budgetary considerations, just to name a few.

By taking these considerations into account and being proactive in planning, you are more likely to create a positive and inclusive travel experience for your multi-generational family.

Travel Essentials for Elderly

Keeping it convenient and stress-free is the key to creating a fun experience for senior travellers. Besides a family travel insurance that covers for any pre-existing medical conditions that the elderly may have, getting ready travel accessories like travel cane, lightweight luggage, small first-aid kit and refillable water bottle can make a world of difference for them too.

If a wheelchair can make travelling easier for your family member, do bring one along. You may also request one at the airport or cruise for embarking and debarking. Airlines like Singapore Airlines even go the extra mile to assist with on-boarding wheelchairs and special needs travellers to the lavatory during the flight.

Family travel checklist for children.

Depending on the age of the children you are travelling with, you may need to prepare anything from a travel crib to game sets that will keep the little restless ones entertained. If you are bringing young toddlers along, a light-weight stroller with cover is a must-have to ensure both the child and parent can enjoy a smooth journey.

Be sure to prepare a diaper bag stocked with essentials like diapers, wipes, portable changing pad, diaper cream, soft blanket, pacifier and anything that will bring comfort to the little ones while they are in an unfamiliar territory. Bringing along a nice supply of children snacks and drinks may also be helpful if you are uncertain if the destination offers food choices that appeals to your child preference. However, do avoid overly sugary snacks to prevent energy spikes and crashes.

Another essential item to carry along is a medication and first-aid kit as the young ones may not adapt to the change in climate, terrain or local conditions as easily as adults. Pack any necessary medications suitable for their age and items like adhesive bandages and antiseptic wipes that can soothe minor injuries.
