Cantlay and Scott Stallings were locked in a tight back-nine battle, with Cantlay ultimately prevailing on 14-under 270 to take a one-shot win over Stallings.

Cantlay is the first player to successfully defend the title in a FedEx Cup playoff event, while Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele finished in a tie for third place.

Cantlay won the $2,700,000 winner's share of the $15,000,000 purse.

Patrick Cantlay Wins 2021 BMW Championship

The PGA Tour’s postseason will head north from Tennessee to Delaware for the 16th annual BMW Championship at Wilmington Country Club, located in the city of the same name.

The second of three FedExCup Playoff legs, the BMW will feature the top-70 positioned players in the standings, with only 30 receiving a ticket to East Lake next week.

Patrick Cantlay will return to defend his 2021 title – although he was victorious at Caves Valley in Maryland, so he forfeits any home-field edge. Joining the current world No. 4, will be 69 additional elite tour players, with many seeking to cement a spot in the big-money finale next week in Atlanta.

BMW Championship History

Justin Rose BMW Championship

Depending on how it is viewed, the BMW Championship could be considered to have a relatively short history, or a long, illustrious one.

The event we know today as the BMW Championship was an original FedExCup event, started in 2007 – the same year as the first postseason, and originally rotated between several mid-West (mainly Illinois) golf courses. For the past two editions, though, it’s been contested in the mid-Atlantic – first in Maryland and this year in Delaware.

Tiger Woods won the inaugural trophy, and then took the championship again two years later in an eight-stroke shellacking at Cog Hill.

In 2016, Dustin Johnson won his second BMW, which tied Tiger for the most wins in event history. Other top-ranked stars who own BMW trophies include Rory McIlroy , Justin Rose , Jason Day , Justin Thomas , Jon Rahm and Patrick Cantlay .

Dustin Johnson BMW Championship

However, before it was the merciless third second leg of the FedExCup Playoffs, the BMW Championship was a regular PGA Tour stop known as the Western Open. And that tournament – once considered a major before the advent of official majors – has roots that go all the way back to 1899, making it the third-longest continuously running event on the PGA Tour, with only the U.S. Open and the Open Championship going back further.

For most of its history, the Western Open was an elite event that included such notable winners as Willie Anderson , Walter Hagen , Ben Hogan , Sam Snead , Arnold Palmer , Jack Nicklaus , and Tiger Woods , who holds the distinction of winning before and after it became a playoff event, and re-titled as the BMW Championship.

Scott’s ‘million-dollar’ shot stuns PGA Tour as Aussie pulls off epic FedEx Cup survival act

Adam Scott has played himself into the Tour Championship in remarkable fashion , saving par on the 72nd hole of the BMW Championship to sneak inside the FedEx Cup’s top-30 golfers.

The Australian needed par at Wilmington Country Club’s 18th hole to qualify for the season finale, but put himself in strife with a pulled tee shot that came to rest beside a fairway bunker, leaving him with no stance.

An awkward, baseball-swing second shot came to rest in a greenside bunker, forcing Scott to deliver a clutch sand save to reach the Tour Championship for the first time since 2019.

EXPLAINED: Golf’s $109m finale is here... and two Aussies stand to make a fortune

Scott delivered, playing a brilliant shot recovery shot that came to rest within tap-in range, ultimately keeping his season alive.

Only the season’s top 30 ranked players go to the Tour Championship — starting Thursday — where the winner is handed a $USD18 million ($A26.2m) winner’s cheque, while even last place earns $500,00 ($A728k).

Scott’s sand save not only put him into the event, but saw him finish in a tie for fifth at the BMW Championship with KH Lee and Corey Conners, earning him another $547,500 ($A796,566).

A bogey would have dropped him into a five-way tie for seventh and a smaller payout of $436,500 ($A635,070). As such, Scott’s bunker save was worth at least $A889,496 — and it could well be worth millions depending on where he finishes at the Tour Championship.

A total of $75 million ($A109m) is handed out in bonuses after the Tour Championship.

Scott started the FedEx Cup playoffs ranked 78th before he played himself into the BMW Championship by jumping to 45th at the first event, and now the Tour Championship with a rise to 29th.

Scott and Cameron Smith are the only Australians to qualify for the FedEx Cup finale.

Under pressure, Scott played some of his best golf this year in Wilmington, holding the solo lead after 36 holes, while he was two shots behind eventual winner Patrick Cantlay after 54 holes.

But he started the final round by going two-over after nine holes, dropping him well out of the tournament lead — and out of the FedEx Cup’s projected top-30.

Scott started to rally, carding an eagle at the 12th and a birdie on 14, which sandwiched a bogey on 13.

His round ended with three-consecutive pars, albeit with the big scare on 18.

Meanwhile, Patrick Cantlay defended his BMW Championship crown and will start the Tour Championship in second.

Smith will start in sixth, six shots behind No.1 Scottie Scheffler, having missed the event due to a hip complaint.

Opinion & Analysis

2022 bmw pga championship: full preview.

bmw championship pga tour 2022

The DP World Tour is set to play their flagship event this week in London, England.

The BMW PGA Championship has been played at Wentworth Club since 1984 and will once again play host to some of the best players in the world.

Wentworth Club is located close to Windsor Castle on the southwestern fringes of London. The course is a Par 72 measuring 7,282 yards. It’s a classical, tree-lined layout designed by Harry Colt and redesigned by Ernie Els.

It will come as no surprise given the landscape of golf that there will be more to the story than just golf this week at one of the world’s most historic courses. Seventeen LIV Golf members will be playing in the event, which has rubbed many the wrong way, including Rory McIlroy.

“I hate it. I really do. It’s going to be hard for me to stomach going to Wentworth in a couple of weeks’ time and seeing 18 of them there. That just doesn’t sit right with me.

“So yeah, I feel strongly. I believe what I’m saying are the right things and I think when you believe that what you’re saying is the right thing, you’re happy to stick your neck out on the line.”

Sergio Garcia was formerly one of McIlroy’s best friends and Rory even participated in Sergio’s wedding back in 2017. According to Golf Monthly , their relationship has completely deteriorated.

When Garcia was asked about possible tension between DP World Tour players and LIV participants, the Spaniard was dismissive. Speaking to Golf Digest after the second round of LIV Boston, Sergio said: “I’m sure some guys will be tense about it [because] we’re going to go out there and play; what I’m going to do is support the European tour and that’s all I can do. Whoever doesn’t like it, too bad for them.”

In terms of field strength, this year’s BMW PGA Championship is one of the strongest fields for the event in recent memory.

Thirteen players from the OWGR top fifty will be at Wentworth including Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Matt Fitzpatrick, Billy Horschel, Shane Lowry, Abraham Ancer, Tyrrell Hatton, Tommy Fleetwood, Thomas Pieters, Talor Gooch, Ryan Fox and Patrick Reed.

Past 5 Winners at Wentworth

2021: Billy Horschel (-19)

2020: Tyrrell Hatton (-19)

2019: Danny Willett (-20)

2018: Francesco Molinari (-17)

2017: Alex Noren (-11)

Rory McIlroy (+550), Jon Rahm (+800) and Matt Fitzpatrick (+1100) will prove to be difficult to beat this week, but their inclusion in the field should provide plenty of value down the betting board.

BMW PGA Championship Outright Bets

Adam Scott (+3000) (DraftKings):

Adam Scott is playing some good golf lately and seems to be peaking at an important time. The Australian is an important member of the International Team for the President’s Cup and takes great pride in being a leader for his team.

Scott had an extremely impressive showing at the FedEx Cup Playoffs, finishing 5th in both the Northern Trust and BMW Championship. His clutch play in that stretch enabled him to punch his ticket to East Lake for the first time since 2019.

The 42-year-old has played at Wentworth on four occasions and has only finished outside of the top 20 once. Last year, he finished 14th and was in the top-5 heading into the final round.

Classical, tree-lined layouts have historically been a great fit for the former Masters Champion, and I fully expect Scott to be in the mix this week at Wentworth.

Sergio Garcia (+6000) (DraftKings):

Sergio Garcia’s desire to win and compete with the best in the world has consistently and fairly been criticized since his controversial decision to join LIV Golf. However, I don’t believe that his alleged lack of motivation can be attributed to this event.

Garcia ranks 14th all time in European Tour wins and most likely feels as though the tour has betrayed him in response to him joining LIV Golf.  If there were ever a time when Sergio would want to win to prove his naysayers wrong, now would be the time.

The Spaniard looked sharp in last week’s start The International for LIV Boston. Garcia finished in a tie for 9th place and fired a Saturday 64 and Sunday 66 after a sluggish start in the opening round. If he can get in the mix at Wentworth, it would surely be another riveting Sunday for golf fans.

Branden Grace (+5500) (DraftKings):

Branden Grace had another solid performance last week at LIV Boston finishing in 12th place after posting a -9 after three days of golf. His play has been extremely consistent since joining LIV with finishes of 13th, 1st, and 3rd prior to his start in Boston. Last week, the South African was extremely efficient from tee to green. He ranked 7th in the field in fairways hit and 6th in the field in greens in regulation. If his efficient ball striking continues, the tree-lined Wentworth will be a great fit for Grace.

Grace has enjoyed Wentworth in the past and has the results to back it up. In nine starts at the course, the 34-year-old has finished in the top-10 on three occasions. Two of those starts resulted in a top-5 finish, with the most recent coming in 2018.

Grace is an accomplished worldwide player with 15 professional wins, including nine on the European Tour. The 34-year-old is playing good golf and loves the track, which indicates there is some value on this number.

bmw championship pga tour 2022

The PGA Tour heads to Jack’s place to play the 2024 edition of the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday. The Memorial is regarded as one of the most prestigious non-majors of the PGA Tour season, and for the second consecutive year the tournament will be a “Signature Event”.

Muirfield Village Golf Club is a 7,571-yard par-72 located in Dublin, Ohio that features Bentgrass greens. A Jack Nicklaus design, the course was built in 1974 and redesigned by Nicklaus in 2020. The course can play extremely difficult due to its long rough and lightning-fast greens.

The Memorial Tournament will play host to 80 golfers this week, which is down from 120 last year. The top 50 and ties will make the cut. Being a designated event, the field is predictably stacked and will feature most of the biggest stars on Tour. All eligible players have committed to the event in addition to sponsor’s exemptions Matt Kuchar, Brandt Snedeker and Billy Horschel.

Past Winners at the Memorial Tournament

  • 2023: Viktor Hovland (-7)
  • 2022: Billy Horschel (-13)
  • 2021: Patrick Cantlay (-13)
  • 2020: Jon Rahm (-9)
  • 2019: Patrick Cantlay (-19)
  • 2018: Bryson DeChambeau (-15)
  • 2017: Jason Dufner (-13)
  • 2016: William McGirt (-15)

Key Stats for Muirfield Village

Let’s take a look at five key metrics for Muirfield Village to determine which golfers boast top marks in each category over their last 24 rounds.

1. Strokes Gained: Approach

Jack Nicklaus designs all have one thing in common: They reward the best iron players on Tour. When designing Muirfield Village, Jack created a second-shot golf course that strongly benefited golfers who could really dial in their approach shots. With that in mind, does it surprise anyone that Tiger Woods won this event five times?

Strokes Gained: Approach Over Past 24 Rounds

  • Scottie Scheffler  (+1.37)
  • Corey Conners  (+1.14)
  • Xander Schauffele  (+1.14)
  • Sepp Straka  (+0.88)
  • Rory McIlroy  (+0.88)

2. Strokes Gained: Ball Striking

Strokes Gained: Ball Striking does include approach, but if there is any week to overemphasize Strokes Gained: Approach, this is the week. The statistic also incorporates Strokes Gained: Off the Tee, which will be important considering the rough at Muirfield Village can be exceedingly penal.

Strokes Gained: Ball Striking Over Past 24 Rounds

  • Scottie Scheffler (+2.48)
  • Xander Schauffele  (+1.88)
  • Rory McIlroy  (+1.60)
  • Ludvig Aberg  (+1.56)
  • Corey Conners  (+1.42)

3. Good Drive %

Driving the ball well will be an important factor. Bombing it off the tee is not a requirement at Muirfield Village, but distance always helps. The rough can get very long, and golfers who can’t put the ball in the fairway will fall out of contention quickly. Balanced and consistent drivers of the golf ball should be the targets this week.

Good Drive % Over Past 24 Rounds

  • Collin Morikawa  (+88.1%)
  • Tom Hoge  (86.1%)
  • Sepp Straka  (+85.9%)
  • Scottie Scheffler  (+85.8%)
  • Alex Noren  (+85.8%)

4. Strokes Gained: Putting (Bentgrass – Fast)

The Bentgrass greens at Muirfield are lightning quick. Whoever can master these difficult putting surfaces has a major advantage at Jack’s place.

Strokes Gained: Putting (Bentgrass+Fast) Over Past 24 Rounds:

  • Justin Rose  (+1.43)
  • Thomas Detry  (+0.88)
  • Sahith Theegala  (+0.77)
  • Harris English  (+0.74)
  • Denny McCarthy  (+0.73)

5. Strokes Gained: Nicklaus Designs

We often see similar leaderboards when events are hosted by Jack Nicklaus designed courses. The model this week will look to incorporate those golfers.

Strokes Gained: Nicklaus Designs (per round, min. 4 rounds) Over Past 36 Rounds:

  • Scottie Scheffler  (+2.49)
  • Patrick Cantlay  (+2.32)
  • Collin Morikawa  (+1.99)
  • Shane Lowry  (+1.74)
  • Austin Eckroat  (+1.67)

6. Course History

Course History (Strokes Gained: Total (per round, min. 4 rounds) Over Past 36 Rounds:

  • Scottie Scheffler  (+2.75)
  • Patrick Cantlay  (+2.54)
  • Justin Rose  (+2.17)
  • Collin Morikawa  (+1.77)
  • Jordan Spieth  (+1.66)

The Memorial Tournament Model Rankings

Below, I’ve compiled overall model rankings using a combination of the five key statistical categories previously discussed — SG: Approach (27%), SG: BS (18%), Good Drive % (16%), SG: Putting Bentgrass – Fast (13%), Course History (13%) and SG: Total Nicklaus Designs (13%).

  • Scottie Scheffler
  • Xander Schauffele
  • Shane Lowry
  • Sahith Theegala
  • Collin Morikawa
  • Rory McIlroy
  • Keegan Bradley
  • Sepp Straka
  • Corey Conners
  • Viktor Hovland
  • Russell Henley
  • Justin Thomas

2024 Memorial Tournament Picks

Collin morikawa +1800 ( fanatics ).

Collin Morikawa has consistently shown up in the biggest events over the past few months. He finished in a tie for 3rd at The Masters, 9th at the RBC Heritage, a tie for 16th at the Wells Fargo Championship and a tie for 4th at the PGA Championship. He also finished 4th in his most recent start at the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Iron play is always a strong indication of where Morikawa’s game is trending, and his Strokes Gained: Approach numbers have seen a recent uptick. The two-time major champion has gained an average of 4.0 strokes on approach over his last two starts, which despite not being as good as his peak approach numbers, are a major improvement over the past year or so.

Morikawa has played some great golf at Muirfield Village throughout his career. He won the Workday Charity Open in 2020 and lost in a playoff at The Memorial Tournament in 2021. His two most recent starts at the course have ended in a withdraw and a missed cut, but his current form is much better than it was over the past few seasons coming into the event.

In addition to the strong iron play, the ability to keep the ball in the fairway will be a major advantage for a Memorial Tournament that I anticipate will play relatively difficult. Morikawa has gained strokes off the tee in eight consecutive starts, including 3.8 strokes at the PGA Championship and 4.0 strokes at the Charles Schwab Challenge.

The American has been fantastic at Nicklaus Courses since he burst onto the scene on the PGA Tour, and that was once again on full display at Valhalla last month. In his last 36 rounds, Collin ranks 3rd in Strokes Gained: Total on Nicklaus designs. He also ranked 1st in the field in Good Drive %, which will be a key this week.

It’s been a while since the 27-year-old has won a big event on Tour, but that could very well change this week at Jack’s place.

Justin Thomas +2500 (BetMGM)

Justin Thomas is winless in last 43 professional starts, dating back to the 2022 PGA Championship. For a player with 17 professional wins and in the prime of his career, that’s a long time.

Other than being “due”, Thomas has shown signs that is just about all the way back from his two-year slump. He has four top-ten finishes this season, with three of those being at a “signature” event or a major. Most recently, he’s finished in a tie for 5th at the RBC Heritage, a tie for 21st at the Wells Fargo Championship and a tie for 8th at the PGA Championship.

JT has loved Nicklaus designs throughout his career. He finished 2nd at the 2020 Workday at Muirfield Village, losing in a playoff to Collin Morikawa. In his last 30 rounds at the course, he ranks 6th in Strokes Gained: Total.

In addition to the obvious course fit, Thomas’ ball striking numbers have come to life of late. He gained 4.1 strokes on approach at the PGA Championship to go along with 4.6 strokes off the tee. Valhalla another Jack Nicklaus design so it’s encouraging to see that’s where he had arguably his best ball striking week of the season. The key for Thomas will be keeping the ball on the fairways this week and he’s improved his SG: OTT performance in four consecutive starts.

Thomas is finally in form and ready to get back in the winner’s circle at Muirfield Village.

Byeong Hun An +5000 (DraftKings)

Byeong Hun An is playing the best golf of his career. This season, the 32-year-old has finished T16 at the Genesis Invitational, T16 at The Masters, T8 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and 3rd at the Wells Fargo Championship.

The South Korean’s ball striking has been fantastic this year. He’s gained strokes both off the tee and on approach in six consecutive events. An will now head back to a course where he’s had plenty of success. Back in 2018, he lost in a playoff to a surging superstar named Bryson DeChambeau. Ben has five top-25 finishes in eight starts at the course. The few times he missed the cut were in 2020 and 2021 when he was really struggling with his game.

An has had some close calls of late and I believe we need to stick with him for one more week.

Corey Conners +6000 (DraftKings)

Corey Conners is absolutely striping the ball right now. In his past 24 rounds, the Canadian ranks 2nd in Strokes Gained: Approach, 5th in Strokes Gained: Ball Striking and 22nd in Good Drive %.

At last week’s Canadian Open, Conners ranked 4th for the week in approach and finished in 6th place. In his previous two starts, Conners ranked 2nd in Strokes Gained: Approach at the Wells Fargo Championship and 4th at the PGA Championship. There are very few players on the planet that are currently hotter with their irons than Corey Conners.

Conners has a solid history at Muirfield Village with mixed results. His best finish came in 2022, when he finished T13 and also finished T22 back in 2020. While putting is typically Conners’ greatest weakness, he’s gained strokes on the greens in three of his six starts at the course and ranks 30th in the field in Strokes Gained: Putting on fast Bentgrass, so there’s hope that the 32-year-old can putt to field average this week.

Conners’ ability to hit fairways and dial in his mid-irons can propel him to the top of the leaderboard this week at a course that favors ball strikers.

Will Zalatoris +8000 (DraftKings)

I’m not entirely sure if Will Zalatoris is fully healthy based on his recent struggles, but there are enough positive signs for a player of his talent at this number.

Zalatoris made a Friday charge in his most recent start at the PGA Championship, which enabled him to sneak through the cut line. For the week, he gained 3.56 strokes on approach and has gained on approach in nine of his past ten starts.

Although he’s struggled at times, Zalatoris still has some strong finishes in big events this year. He finished in a tie for 9th at the Masters, a tie for 4th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and a tie foe 2nd at the Genesis Invitational.

If Zalatoris is feeling fit, Muirfield Village is a perfect course to showcase his strengths. He’s one of the best iron players in the world and already has a 5th place finish in his most recent start at the course (2022).

This is a buy low opportunity on a world class player that has win equity.

Saso says so! Yuka Saso survives for second U.S. Open title

bmw championship pga tour 2022

One of my favorite golf writers was the late Ron Balicki, and not just for the shared first name. Balicki was called, and enjoyed, the nickname “Wrong Ron,” because whoever he chose to win, was guaranteed to do not that. I might have inherited the moniker, sadly, and if you read yesterday’s update, this week goes miles to secure that designation. Four amateurs made the cut, and three of them tied for low amateur at 12-over par. I picked the one that did not make that number. Hilarious, no? As for the tournament proper, the new “Wrong Ron” guessed the correct country, but the wrong golfer. I went with Hinako Shibuno, and it was the  other pride of Japan, Yuka Saso, who stole the show. Alas!

For a healthy portion of the day, odds were in the favor of a player earning a second Open title. Important note:  her name was not Yuka Saso. As golfers around her crumbled, Minjee Lee held steady at +1 on the day, and -4 on the week. Arpichya Yubol from Thailand had made the big move of the day. She reached -3 on the day an -1 for the week, before two late bogies dropped her to solo fifth position, a remarkable achievement. The round of the day came from Ally Ewing, who posted four birdies against zero bogeys for 66 and a tie for third spot.

As for Minjee, the round’s thread began to unravel at the 9th. A missed fairway led to bogey, and she followed with a three-putt for another at the tenth hole. Double bogeys at 12 and 14 took her out of the running for the title, and opened the chase to a new segment of the field. Hinako Shibuno would ultimately finish in solo second, one of two golfers to finish under par on the week. Shibuno was never a threat for the title, but when others lost their momentum, she found herself positioned for a runner-up finish.

It was Yuka Saso who turned in the day’s memorable performance. Saso turned in even par on the day, preserving her position at one-under par. Andrea Lee (+5) and Wichanee Meechai (+7) fell away from their place atop the third-round chart, as did Minjee Lee. Suddenly, Saso had posted four birdies in five holes on the inward half. She finished at two under on the day, four under on the week, and earned a three-shot win over Shibuno.

In her post-0round comments, Saso revealed that she had doubts that she would win again, especially a major title. She discussed the addition of a new putter to her bag, and her extraordinary confidence in her driver. Finally, Saso revealed how important the first cut of rough was to the resolution of the tournament. That wee bit of playable grass made all the difference in her mind.

With the refreshing transparency that all writers desire, Yuka Saso won for a second time on Sunday. We’ll forgive her if she values the US Open silver a bit more.

5 examples of how Lexi Thompson has been treated harsher than any of her peers

  • Related:  Lexi Thompson announces retirement from golf

Following Lexi Thompson’s Solheim Cup post-round presser on Friday evening, the 28-year-old has been the topic of much discussion.

Golf pundits and fans alike have been weighing in with their takes after this exchange with a reporter surrounding an untimely shank on Friday afternoon went viral:

Confounding answer from Lexi and subsequent reaction from the US side. It was one of the pivotal moments of the entire day and somehow that's off limits? pic.twitter.com/9std3LFlmN — Tron Carter (@TronCarterNLU) September 23, 2023

After the incident, LPGA Hall of Famer Nancy Lopez said that Lexi has “been picked on and drug through negative comments. She is tired of it”

So has the criticism of Lexi Thompson been justified, or is this yet another example of her being unfairly treated?

Well, here are five times, in my opinion, that Lexi has been scrutinized far differently over the years than her peers.

2022 KPMG PGA Championship

At the 2022 KPMG PGA Championship, Lexi Thompson held a two-stroke lead with three holes to play. She couldn’t close the deal and lost the tournament.

Afterwards, she was fined $2k (as were the rest of the group) for slow play.

Lexi declined to speak to the media and got hammered on social media for doing so…

Lexi Thompson has declined to speak with the media here at Congressional. Not a great look? — Zephyr Melton (@zephyrmelton) June 26, 2022

Almost every golfer at some point has skipped a media session following disappointment on the course, and nobody has really batted an eyelid.

Tiger skipped back-to-back post-round media briefings at the 2019 WGC Mexico after being frustrated with his putting. Remember the backlash over that? Nah, me neither.

Donald Trump

bmw championship pga tour 2022

@TheWhiteHouse

Every (or nearly every) big-name golfer under the sun has played golf with Donald Trump. Tiger Woods, Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy etc. Nobody really cared.

For whatever reason, when Lexi Thompson did, it was a story , and she took herself off social media soon after the photo was posted.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Lexi Thompson (@lexi)

2021 U.S. Women’s Open

In the final round of the 2021 U.S. Women’s Open, Lexi Thompson had a 6-foot eagle on her opening hole. She missed and made birdie to lead by five.

She then lost the tournament.

Following the round, Brandel Chamblee said on ‘Live From’ :

“She’s got 6 feet away. Now professional golfers don’t miss the center of the face by a pinhead. Look where she hits this putt on the very 1st hole. Look where this putt comes off the face. She would have missed the center of the putter there by a half an inch. I have never — I have never — seen a professional golfer miss the center of the putter by a wider margin than that. That was at the 1st hole. “

Honest? Absolutely. Correct? Brandel usually is. Has any other LPGA golfer been handed the full-on Chamblee treatment? Not to my knowledge.

2023 Solheim Cup

Lexi Thompson spoke the words, “I don’t need to comment on that” when a reporter asked her about a failed shot, and the golf community collectively lost their minds.

Lost on many people is the fact that she literally answered the question instantly after.

Jessica Korda described the reporting of the awkward exchange with the media member as yet another example of the golf media shredding Lexi, but in reality, it was really just golf media covering the furore created by golf fans reacting to the viral clip.

So sad seeing golf media , yet again, shred Lexi. It’s easy writing about other people’s mistakes. It’s Golf, bad shots happen- give the girl a break. She grows the game more than anyone on tour… And she’s a great player!! — Jessica Korda (@Thejessicakorda) September 23, 2023

Lexi then won her next two matches, collecting 3 points from 4 for the U.S. team. But nobody seems to care about that.

‘yOu ShoUlD PrAcTIce puTTinG’

There’s very few golfers that have been plagued with such inane posts on their Instagram page as Lexi Thompson has.

I’ve tracked golfer’s social media accounts over the past few years (job requirement, sort of?). I can categorically say that Lexi gets some of the angriest and most aggressive responses to her posts of any golfer. Male or female. (She also gets some very nice ones too) .

Despite countless posts of Thompson relentlessly practising her putting, the number of comments from dummies accusing her of neglecting that area of her game is both bizarre and alarming. Notice how the comments have been disabled on the post below? Probably not a coincidence.

Go on any other golfer’s social account, and it will be hard to find the same dynamic.

Throw in the scandalous rules decision at the 2017 ANA Inspiration that cost her a second major title and spawned the “Lexi rule,” and it’s hard not to think Lexi has had a bit of a raw deal at times.

BMW PGA Championship: Tee times, prize money, TV coverage as Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, LIV Golfers tee it up

Alex Livie

Published 07/09/2022 at 06:31 GMT

Wentworth plays host to one of the DP World Tour's flagship events this week, with a stacked field lining up for the BMW PGA Championship. Sadly, not all the talk is about golf with 17 LIV Golf players in the field. They will be up against the cream of the crop in terms of the PGA Tour, with Jon Rahm and Rory McIroy teeing it up. Billy Horschel is also in the field to defend his title.

Bmw championship offers peek inside delaware's most exclusive golf course, wilmington country club, share this article.

When Wilmington’s Paul Ruggiero teed up with PGA Tour golfers on Wednesday as part of the Gardner Heidrick Pro-Am at the BMW Championship, it was a thrill of a lifetime.

Not only was he playing side by side with Matt Kuchar and Maverick McNealy, it was a rare opportunity to play one of Delaware’s most exclusive courses – Wilmington Country Club.

“It’s a privilege to play here. It’s the Cadillac of country clubs,” said Ruggiero, who is a member at Centerville’s private Fieldstone Golf Club, another posh course where his locker sits across from a fellow member with the nametag “President Joe Biden.”

As president of N.K.S. Distributors, the state’s Anheuser-Busch beer distributorship, Ruggerio is in charge of all beer at this week’s tournament because the PGA Tour and the makers of Budweiser have an exclusive partnership.

BMW Championship :  PGA Tour Live on ESPN+ | Leaderboard

One of the perks of the job is being able to wiggle into the pro-am and play just one day before the $15 million championship kicks off Thursday.

And while any day at Wilmington Country Club—the No. 2-ranked course on Golfweek’s Best Private Courses list for the state of Delaware—is a flex of one’s First State status, playing it this week is an ultimate power move. As Ruggiero puts it, “Wilmington Country Club is home to a who’s who of powerful, important Delawareans.”

Private playground opens its gates

Steeped in history, Wilmington Country Club was founded in 1901, two years after the debut of the Western Open, which changed its name to the BMW Championship in 2007.

After more than a century ensconced in privacy and exclusivity, the country club has decided to open to the world this week in its biggest way yet: by hosting the state’s first PGA Tour event .

And not just any event. It’s the top 70 golfers in the season-long FedEx Cup standings for the BMW Championship, the longest-running PGA Tour event on the calendar other than the four majors: the Masters, U.S. Open, the Open Championship and PGA Championship.

A playground for the rich and influential, it’s the kind of place where CEOs, politicians and every other kind of mover-and-shaker mingle in the clubhouse, which underwent a $7 million renovation in 2014. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that it hosted Biden’s first round of golf as president in April of last year.

Wilmington Country Club, which counts Biden as a member and is located just four miles from his home, has hosted Beau Biden Foundation fundraisers in the past and is a magnet for bold-face names, whether it’s a 2013 visit by golf legend Arnold Palmer for the Palmer Cup or Tower Hill School graduate Mehmet Oz for a ChristianaCare event in 2007.

In fact, Palmer and Jack Nicklaus played an exhibition match there in September 1966, with the Golden Bear besting Palmer by two strokes.

While the club has not hosted a professional golf event before, prestigious amateur events have included the 1913 U.S. Women’s Amateur and the 1971 U.S. Amateur, which featured a then-19-year-old Ben Crenshaw prowling the fairways. With two courses—the North Course and South Course, on which the BMW Championship is being played—it’s a site that sprawls across nearly 350 acres.

FedEx Cup leader: ‘This is a big-boy golf course’

As the 26-year-old FedEx Cup standings leader Will Zalatoris put it Wednesday, “This is a big-boy golf course.”

It is his first time in Delaware and he was not expecting what he found with the vast 7,534-yard South Course, adding, “If I were to design a golf course, this is probably how I would design it for me. So, I’m very excited.”

Even though it’s hard for most Delawareans to get onto the vaunted course, the golf team from nearby Alexis I. du Pont High School used it as the Tigers’ home course for years until switching to the Ed Oliver Golf Club after the height of COVID-19. (Ed Oliver was the original home of Wilmington Country Club before moving to its current location in the 1950s.)

Wilmington native Earl Cooper, a Wilmington Country Club assistant pro for two years starting in 2014, was one of those students who called the Chateau Country course home when he played for A.I. du Pont. In fact, he first played the course at 13 while working there as a caddy.

“I remember being in the caddy yard at the cart barn and wondering what it was like in the clubhouse,” said Cooper, the first Black golf professional in the then-114-year history of the club. “You knew it was a big deal playing there, even at my age.”

If you break a rule, someone will tell you … quickly

It was at Wilmington Country Club where he learned the strict rules found at most private courses, such as always wearing a belt and tucking in your shirt — rules that have been relaxed this week for the general public.

Usually, if you don’t abide by the rules, “Someone will quickly be there to remind you. And since it’s so hard to get in, people listen because they don’t want to jeopardize their membership,” said Cooper, who now lives in New York and is in Wilmington this week for the tournament.

For him, the 2022 BMW Championship is akin to a coming-out party for the course, allowing golf fans into what is an unattainable world for most Delawareans. It’s also a full circle moment for the former Wilmington Country Club caddy. His successful Eastside Golf apparel line, which focuses on younger golfers and promotes diversity within the sport, is part of the tournament.

Eastside has merchandise for sale at a BMW activation site on the course this week, and former New York Giants receiver Victor Cruz even wore a pair of Eastside Golf shoes made in collaboration with Air Jordan during Wednesday’s Gardner Heidrick Pro-Am.

“Dream big because dreams do come true,” Cooper said, reflecting on his journey from caddy to golf professional with his own popular brand being sold on a championship course. “I think having this here is only going to inspire more young kids in the area like I was to realize this is real. This is tangible.”

Club’s culture ‘loosening up’

Tom Humphrey, Wilmington Country Club’s BMW Championship chairman, said he has seen the club mellowing a bit and becoming more family-friendly over the years, even though many of the basic rules remain.

“It’s definitely loosening up. For younger people, you got to have something that’s fun. And in terms of the dress code, you see things now that you would never see,” said Humphrey, pointing to one of the club’s dining areas where you’ll see members dressed in soccer uniforms after practice or even — gasp! — blue jeans.

The retired DuPont Co. executive said there are about 800 core members of the club and a basic membership costs around $70,000, still putting it out of reach for many. But if you tune in to NBC this weekend, you’ll see the same views that Humphrey himself is very eager to see on television.

“This was always a very, very private club, so it’s nice to have the opportunity to welcome a TV audience and everyone else because the course looks really, really great,” Humphrey said, fresh off the course from his pro-am appearance playing alongside Rory McIlroy.

With a membership waitlist even before the BMW Championship came to town, Laura Heien, director of the Delaware State Golf Association, expects that number to grow after this weekend’s broadcast — even if it isn’t a five-year wait like it had been at times in the past.

“When you see something like this on TV and it’s in your neighborhood, you want to check it out,” Heien said. “We’re very fortunate to have some fantastic and historic courses in northern Delaware, in particular. But Wilmington has 36 holes and a history of hosting prestigious events.
