The River Tour

  • View history

The third leg of the tour, during April through June 1981 (and pushed back three weeks from the original schedule, due to Springsteen's exhaustion from the first two legs), represented Springsteen's first real foray into Western Europe, and his first appearances there at all since his very short venture there following the release of  Born to Run  in 1975. In total 34 shows were played, including six nights at London's Wembley Arena. Ten countries were visited: West Germany, Switzerland, France, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and the United Kingdom.

The final leg was billed as a "homecoming tour", visiting U.S. cities that had been special in Springsteen's career for multiple night stands, beginning with six nights that opened his native New Jersey's Meadowlands Arena. After 34 shows in just 10 cities, this leg concluded on September 13 and 14 at Cincinnati's Riverfront Coliseum.

Broadcasts and Recordings [ ]

Of all Springsteen's tours, The River Tour is perhaps the least known in retrospect to people who were not there. For many years, unlike tours before and since, there was little official audio or video documentation of it — no live radio broadcasts, no live album, no music videos made from concert footage, and no DVD releases. The  Live/1975-85  box set had thirteen selections from the tour, but they formed little thematic pattern. Shows from the tour were of course bootlegged, but otherwise they are mostly lost to time.

Partial video of the November 5, 1980 show in Tempe was released as part of The Ties That Bind: The River Collection , and audio of the missing songs was released through the Bruce Springsteen Archives as a free download on December 24, 2015.

Several shows have since been released as part of the Bruce Springsteen Archives:

Nassau Coliseum, New York 1980 , released March 25, 2015 and re-mixed and re-released on July 5, 2019.

Wembley Arena, June 5, 1981 , released August 3, 2018.

Nassau Coliseum, New York 12/29/80 , released July 5, 2019.

Brendan Byrne Arena, July 9, 1981 released May 1, 2020.

Nassau Coliseum, Dec 28, 1980 , released December 3, 2021

London, June 4, 1981 , released June 3, 2022

‘Born in the U.S.A.’ at 40: When Bruce Springsteen ruled the rock world and refused to become the voice of Republicans

The classic record by the boss became the biggest-selling album in the world in 1985 and paved the way to superstardom and political activism for the new jersey native.

Bruce Springsteen

“ Born In the U.S.A. changed my life, gave me my biggest audience, forced me to think more about the way I presented my music and briefly put me at the center of the pop world,” Bruce Springsteen wrote in his autobiographical book Born To Run (2016). The Boss’ seventh album, which was released on June 4, 1984, became the biggest-selling album in the world the following year, at the same time as three other American musicians ( Michael Jackson , Madonna, and Prince) were vying for the throne of global popular music. That album not only turned the rocker from Freehold, New Jersey, into a superstar, but also imprinted his most iconic image on the memories of a generation: his muscular arms raised, with a red bandana on his head and the American flag behind him.

However, Springsteen has always been ambivalent about Born in the U.S.A. “Curiously, it is the only classic Springsteen album that has not been afforded the retrospective treatment of earlier works such as Born To Run (1975), Darkness On The Edge Of Town (1978) or The River (1980). This shows a certain discomfort with the results, although not so much with the songs themselves, as many of them are still played at his concerts,” explains music critic Ignacio Juliá. The only special edition of that album that will be released, on June 14, is a deluxe vinyl edition but without any extra material.

The truth is that something was changing in Springsteen’s life when he recorded Born in the U.S.A. , but perhaps nothing that foreshadowed such a resounding rise to the league of the big stadiums. After the exhausting tour for The River , with 140 concerts throughout 1980 and 1981, he became tired and depressed and began to visit a psychologist, who recommended that he go to the gym. Regular weight training, he said, helped him get his head on straight. In time, he felt pressured to record in New York with his usual backing group, The E Street Band, but the marathon sessions produced material so contrasting that two albums were released.

Bruce Springsteen

The first of them, Nebraska (1982), was a practically acoustic work, which dealt with dark social themes, and in that same vein emerged many of the songs that would later make up Born in the U.S.A. , including the famous title track. Nebraska was the first album that Springsteen did not tour for. Instead, he remained locked in the studio for two years and recorded almost 90 songs. The seventh album was almost ready, but his manager, Jon Landau, told him that it was missing a song that could be a hit. Within days, the musician delivered Dancing in the Dark , the most successful single of his career.

His record label, CBS, took the example of Michael Jackson’s Thriller , from which seven singles were released with their corresponding videos in a new media scenario dominated by MTV and image culture. Seven singles (and five videos) were also released from Born in the U.S.A. The first, Dancing in the Dark , was directed by Brian de Palma and featured Springsteen himself dancing with a then-unknown Courteney Cox . Three of the following videos were directed by another filmmaker who was beginning to emerge, John Sayles. All of them starred the singer, who played the characters he had created for his songs, such as the car mechanic in I’m on Fire or the former baseball player in Glory Days .

To his new iconography had to be added the album cover, with Springsteen, photographed by Annie Leibovitz , with his back to the American flag. The image gave rise to all kinds of theories. A rather curious one was that the musician was urinating on the flag. He himself denied this in an interview with Kurt Loder for Rolling Stone magazine, saying that, when it came down to choosing, the photo of his backside was better than the one of his face.

Bruce Springsteen

The voice of a generation

The truth is that almost everything that happened with Born in the U.S.A. was sought after by the artist. “I was fascinated by people who had become the voice of their time,” he later acknowledged. “I don’t know if I felt I had the capacity for it or just wanted to move in that direction, but it was something that interested me.” “ Born in the U.S.A. is a very important work, the one that culminated the narrative he had been spinning since 1973 for those who had never before stopped to listen to Darkness On The Edge Of Town or Nebraska . They told the same story,” notes Miguel Martinez, a music critic for Rockdelux magazine.

“Their image may have changed, but their message was the same. Even on the 1984 North American tour he included most of the songs from the album Nebraska , with his characters from the America that doesn’t feature on the postcards,” says Joan Colet, founder and president of The Stone Pony, Bruce Springsteen’s fan club in Spain. “It seems he was attracted to wanting to be the voice of his generation,” notes singer-songwriter Joana Serrat, who reveals that her favorite song from that album is I’m on Fire , “both musically and in the lyrical style, from which sordid and dark readings are extracted. In fact, in my most recent tours, I have usually done a Catalan version of the song. Bruce wanted to make a portrait of people like him, trapped in two worlds and burned by the inertia of an imposed destiny. I think he also had the ambition to find his place in stardom, in a place where the culture of success is suffocating.”

“In that cultural context, with Reaganism and Thatcherism at its zenith and all that that implied, an album like that at the top of the charts, of updated rock and roll, opening and closing with songs of defeat, I think was a positive anomaly. And for Bruce, it was wish fulfillment: it’s what he wanted at the time. If with Nebraska he had his Woody Guthrie moment, with Born in the U.S.A. he was going to have his Elvis Presley moment,” says Martínez.

Reagan’s speech and political Springsteen

But the song Born in the U.S.A. was also a turning point in Springsteen’s career for reasons beyond his control. It all began when Republican columnist George Will attended one of the first concerts of the tour and, amazed by the show, saw in Springsteen an example to follow. A review of the album published in The New York Times suggested that the New Jersey native was “one of the few artists who uses rock to express a continuing epic vision of this country, on individual social roots and the possibility of heroic self-creation.” Will, an unofficial advisor to Ronald Reagan , also saw in his songs a champion of economic protectionism, a theory validated by another detail: Born in the U.S.A. was the first CD made in the United States (they were usually manufactured in Japan). Literally, it was a record born in the USA. And the Republican president took advantage of this situation, in the middle of his re-election campaign, when during a rally in the musician’s home state he surprised the audience with this phrase: “America’s future rests in a thousand dreams inside your hearts; it rests in the message of hope in songs so many young Americans admire: New Jersey’s own Bruce Springsteen.”

According to Marc Dolan, author of the book Bruce Springsteen and the Promise Of Rock ‘n’ Roll , the Boss was until then a working-class kid who constructed social portraits, but he had never been interested in political activism. In fact, he never even used to vote. That “incident” forced him to disassociate himself from Reagan’s words. He became more explicit in live performances of his more critical songs and began to get involved in local projects to help the homeless or with food banks. Gradually, he broadened the focus towards global commitment, as demonstrated by his participation in the recording of We Are the World in the middle of his 1985 tour and in the Human Rights Now! tour for Amnesty International in 1988.

Bruce Springsteen

“I have the feeling that Springsteen has always been someone who is sensitive to social issues. I think the fame and scrutiny that this album subjected him to made him more aware of the power and significance of the loudspeaker he had at his disposal because of his status,” says Joana Serrat. “The function of the right wing and hegemonic culture is always to take away the power and meaning of that which is countercultural. I’m not saying Bruce was underground by any means, but his discourse went against the interests of the government and its status quo.”

“Since 2004, Springsteen has become more involved in politics by supporting the Democratic Party, either by participating in the Vote For Change tour or by supporting its candidates, especially Obama,” notes Miguel Martínez, who does not find it strange that the musician wanted to “raise the volume of his voice in that field, if you consider what he had in front of him: Trumpism and beyond. But there is also something inherent to any mass phenomenon: that it becomes a magnet for morons,” adds the critic.

“ Born in the U.S.A. is one of the clearest examples of how a lyric can be misinterpreted politically. It is not a patriotic hymn, but a terrible nightmare after Vietnam,” says Ignacio Juliá. “From there, Springsteen has developed a trajectory as a carefully supervised and maintained political figure. I have always criticized The Rising (2002) for telling only a part of 9/11, that of the city attacked and the collective mourning that followed, without showing the political causes that led to the attack, as others did (Steve Earle, Jackson Browne, Patti Smith...). But he has also shown courage: in 2000 he recorded American Skin (41 Shots) , about the death of an innocent man at the hands of the New York police and, in Wrecking Ball (2012) he recorded some of the most piercing songs about the crisis caused by Wall Street in 2008 .″

But the New Jersey native continues to be misunderstood, as Joan Colet argues. “My own brother, in 1984, asked me how could I like a guy who sang such a patriotic song as Born in the U.S.A . It didn’t help that at that time at his concerts he planted a giant American flag behind the stage and that his headband and long hair reminded him of Rambo. I asked him to read the lyrics of the song and he changed his perspective. That’s the problem; people don’t want to read the song properly, they’re not interested. They fixate on the chorus and give it a meaning.”

Bruce Springsteen

1985: The summer of “Bossmania”

Born in the U.S.A. was also the name of Springsteen’s most ambitious tour. He began by touring all over North America between June 1984 and February 1985, as the popularity of the album was rising. A month later, he flew to Australia and Japan. In June 1985, he arrived in Europe, and that summer, it can be said that Bossmania exploded. A significant fact: his seven albums all entered the bestseller list in the U.K., something that had never happened before with any other artist.

“One of the concessions Bruce had to face was the change of venues,” notes Joan Colet. “He used to be comfortable performing in theaters of 2,000 people or less. On The River tour he had to give way to pavilions because of the demand from his fans. He wasn’t very happy because it wasn’t clear to him that the people in the back row would hear the concert well and feel the power of his show. He became paranoid and sat in the back row at soundchecks to see if they would be able to hear properly. Bruce had always felt the need for the audience, when they went home, to feel as if the concert had been for them alone. He wanted to see all their faces and meet the eyes of all his fans. By 1984, he was still able to control his concerts during the first part of the tour, but then came the madness and chaos in Europe. The first concert was in the Slane Castle esplanade, on the outskirts of Dublin. Only two days before, the Heysel Stadium tragedy had occurred, where 39 Italian fans died at the European Cup final between Liverpool and Juventus. When Bruce saw at Slane Castle the tide of people going from one side to the other, almost without setting foot on the ground, he was so scared that, during the intermission, he told Jon Landau in the dressing room that he was not going to go on stage in for second half and to cancel the entire stadium tour because he did not want to have the burden of conscience of a fan dying at one of his concerts. The manager convinced him that they would take all the safety precautions.”

Bruce Springsteen

After finishing the 156-concert tour in Los Angeles in October, it was the perfect time to release his first live album. But he opted for something much more ambitious, at the height of that triumphant moment: a box set of five LPs that, with the title Live/1975-85 , included live tracks collected throughout that 10-year period. It was the first box set to debut at number one in the U.S. and remains one of the best-selling live albums of all time. There, the Boss hit his ceiling. “He was already the man at the top, he had culminated an ascent of a dozen years and now it was time to ask himself other questions,” says Miguel Martínez. “After Tunnel of Love (1987), the Springsteen of the 1970s gave way to the megastar and that role resulted in a subsequent irregular discography. With a few exceptions, what he did after that was highly criticized and lacking in the old inspiration… even mediocre. Today, Springsteen, like the Stones, AC/DC or U2, is just a nostalgic and sometimes exciting large-stadium spectacle,” concludes Ignacio Juliá.

Bruce Springsteen News: Singer Postpones Remainder of 2023 Tour

The “Glory Days” singer, who recently turned 74, had previously postponed eight shows during September. The new postponements—affecting stops in Phoenix, San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and throughout Canada—bring the total to 22, according to the Associated Press . Makeup dates are expected to be announced soon. This tour is Springsteen’s first with the E Street Band since 2017.

Quick Facts

“the boss” and the e street band, albums and songs, springsteen on broadway, marriages and children, who is bruce springsteen.

Bruce Springsteen began his career by playing the bar circuit in New Jersey while assembling his famous E Street Band. His breakout 1975 record, Born to Run , united arena rock with human-size tales of working-class America. With dozens of awards under his belt, including 20 Grammys, and more than 65 million albums sold in the United States alone, Springsteen is one of the most successful musicians of all time. Also known for his left-leaning political causes, the artist was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Barack Obama in 2016.

FULL NAME: Bruce Springsteen BORN: September 23, 1949 BIRTHPLACE: Long Branch, New Jersey SPOUSES: Julianne Phillips (1985-1989) and Patti Scialfa (1991-present) CHILDREN: Evan James, Jessica Rae, and Samuel Ryan ASTROLOGICAL SIGN: Libra

Born on September 23, 1949, in Long Branch, New Jersey, Bruce Springsteen was raised in a working-class household in Freehold Borough. His father, Doug Springsteen, had trouble holding down a steady job and worked at different times as a bus driver, millworker, and prison guard. Adele, Bruce’s mother, brought in steadier income as a secretary in a local insurance office.

Springsteen and his father had a difficult relationship. “When I was growing up, there were two things that were unpopular in my house,” the singer later recalled. “One was me, and the other was my guitar.”

Years later, however, Springsteen suggested that his fraught relationship with his father had been important for his art. “I’ve gotta thank him,” Springsteen said upon his induction to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1999, “because what would I conceivably have written about without him? I mean, you can imagine that if everything had gone great between us? We would have had disaster. I would have written just happy songs—and I tried it in the early ’90s, and it didn’t work… Anyway, I put on his work clothes, and I went to work. It was the way that I honored him. My parents’ experience forged my own. They shaped my politics, and they alerted me to what is at stake when you’re born in the U.S.A.”

Springsteen first fell in love with rock ’n’ roll when he saw Elvis Presley perform on The Ed Sullivan Show . “[Elvis] was as big as the whole country itself,” Springsteen later remembered, “as big as the whole dream. He just embodied the essence of it, and he was in mortal combat with the thing. Nothing will ever take the place of that guy.” Springsteen’s mother took out a loan to buy him a $60 Kent guitar for his 16 th birthday, and he hasn’t stopped playing the instrument since then.

An outsider and recluse in school, Springsteen frequently got in trouble at his Catholic elementary school. “In the third grade, a nun stuffed me in a garbage can under her desk because she said that’s where I belonged,” he said. “I also had the distinction of being the only altar boy knocked down by a priest during mass.” Several years later, he skipped his own high school graduation because he felt too uncomfortable to attend.

In 1967, an 18-year-old Springsteen was drafted for military service in the Vietnam War. But, as he later told Rolling Stone magazine, the only thought in his head as he traveled to his induction was “I ain’t goin’.” Springsteen failed his physical, largely due to his deliberately “crazy” behavior and a concussion previously suffered in a motorcycle accident. Springsteen’s 4-F classification—unfit for military service—freed him from having to go to Vietnam and allowed him to pursue music full-time.

By the late 1960s, Springsteen was spending most of his time in Asbury Park on the New Jersey Shore, playing in several different bands while he forged his unique sound and introduced audiences to the gravelly baritone voice that later became famous. It was there that he first met the musicians who formed his E Street Band. Around this time, Springsteen also acquired his nickname, “The Boss,” because he had a habit of collecting money earned during shows and then distributing it evenly among his bandmates.

In April 2014, the E-Street Band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Springsteen’s music is often associated with the “heartland rock” genre, which according to the University of Idaho explores themes of isolation in the working-class population. Artists with similar music include John Mellencamp , Tom Petty , and Bob Seger.

A testament to his lasting popularity, Springsteen became the first artist to have a top-five album in six different decades with the 2020 release of Letter to You .

According to the Recording Industry Association of America, Springsteen has had 15 platinum-certified and two diamond-certified albums throughout his career. Statistically, the biggest is 1984’s Born in the U.S.A. , which was sold more than 17 million copies and includes popular songs like “Cover Me,” “Glory Days,” “Dancing in the Dark,” and the titular track. Other top-selling albums include Born to Run (1975), The River (1980), and the compilation Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band Live 1975-85 (released in 1986).

All together, Springsteen has 12 songs that reached the Billboard top 10, including “Hungry Heart,” “I’m on Fire,” “Tunnel of Love,” and “My Hometown.” Surprisingly, however, none of them ever ascended to the No. 1 spot. The closest was “Dancing in the Dark,” which peaked at No. 2 in 1984.

In 2017, Springsteen made his Broadway debut in Springsteen on Broadway . Held at the Walter Kerr Theatre, the solo effort featured the artist performing some of his hits and sharing stories of his influences and formative years. After receiving a special Tony Award in June 2018, presented by Billy Joel , Springsteen closed out his show at the end of the year.

The following summer, Springsteen’s music was the focal point of the movie Blinded by the Light , about a British teenager of Pakistani descent who draws inspiration from the working-class yearnings of The Boss. According to director Gurinder Chadha, Springsteen expressed his appreciation of the film after a screening, saying, “Thank you for looking after me so beautifully.”

According to Celebrity Net Worth, Springsteen’s total net worth is valued around $650 million as of September 2023.

His net worth was boosted greatly in December 2021, when Springsteen sold his music catalog to Sony for an estimated $550 million—including separate deals for his recorded work and his songwriting rights. Sony owns the Columbia record label under which the singer worked throughout his career. “During the last 50 years, the men and women of Sony Music have treated me with the greatest respect as an artist and as a person. I’m thrilled that my legacy will continue to be cared for by the company and people I know and trust,” the singer said at the time in a statement.

After the whirlwind of commercial success that followed Born in the U.S.A. , Springsteen met and married actor Julianne Phillips in 1985. The marriage quickly began to fall apart, however, and Springsteen began an affair with E Street Band backup singer Patti Scialfa, who shared his working-class New Jersey background. Phillips filed for divorce in 1989.

Springsteen moved in with Scialfa, and they had two children—a son named Evan and a daughter named Jessica—together before officially marrying in 1991. Their third child and younger son, Samuel, was born in 1994.

Jessica is a professional equestrian who began riding horses on the family’s farm in Colts Neck Township, New Jersey. She competed for Team USA at the 2020 Olympics—postponed to the following year because of the COVID-19 pandemic—and won a silver medal in the team jumping competition.

Samuel—a firefighter for Jersey City, New Jersey—and his partner welcomed a daughter, Lily Harper Springsteen, in 2022, making Bruce and Patti grandparents for the first time.

Springsteen’s liberal politics became more pronounced as he became a strong backer of 2008 Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama . When Obama won the election, “The Rising” was the first song played at the victory party, and Springsteen went on to open the show at Obama’s inaugural celebration.

Honoring Springsteen at the Kennedy Center in 2009, Obama said, “I may be the President, but he is The Boss.” Springsteen campaigned for Obama’s reelection in 2012, and the president later named the music icon a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016. Springsteen was also tapped as one of the performers during a prime-time virtual celebration for Joe Biden ’s presidential inauguration in 2021.

Courteney Cox Recreates Her Bruce Springsteen Video Dance For TikTok Trend

A decade before Monica Geller came into our living rooms, Courteney Cox was just Bruce Springsteen’s biggest fan.

The Friends alum threw it back to her appearance in Bruce Springsteen’s 1984 music video for ‘Dancing in the Dark’ as she jumped on a TikTok trend that asks parents how they danced during the decade.

“1980’s dancing…in the dark,” Cox captioned the video .

In the clip, she begins dancing to the 1984 synth-pop hit ‘Smalltown Boy’ by Bronski Beat, which is commonly used with the social trend.

Looking uncomfortable during her dance, Cox then strips off her hoodie to reveal the same Springsteen t-shirt she wore in the “Dancing in the Dark” video as the track changes and she recreates her dance.

Cox was 20 years old when she was selected by director Brian De Palma from a casting call for the video, which was filmed at the opening night of Springsteen’s Born in the USA Tour in Saint Paul, Minnesota and featured The Boss pulling her out of the crowd to dance on stage with him.

Although Cox previously said the video “got me in the door to so many places,” she admitted on Off Camera in 2017 that she “didn’t want to be the one” picked to go onstage.

The Shining Veil actress explained that she originally filmed another sequence with her character’s friends, getting ready before the concert, which didn’t make it into the final cut. The actresses were told that one of them would be picked to go onstage, but not which one.

“I don’t not want to be the one to have to go,” said Cox. “I didn’t want to dance in front of 30,000 people. It was a full concert, and we did the song twice, back to back.”

Cox, who had only done two days of work on As the World Turns at the time, later went on to her star-making role in Friends from 1994 to 2004.

Not a lot of history between Celtics and Mavericks, but a Larry Bird/Bruce Springsteen anecdote from 1984 is priceless

Is a Celtics-Mavericks rivalry just starting to roll?

Boston-Dallas.

A storied sports rivalry?

Actually, no. Not at all.

The Celtics and Mavericks tipped off in Game 1 of the NBA Finals just after 8:30 Thursday night. It was not the renewal of any ancient rivalry between two major professional sports markets.

When it comes to Boston vs. Texas, we’ve seen plenty of Boston-Houston playoff competition. The Celtics played the Rockets in the NBA Finals twice (winning both times) and the Red Sox have played the Astros in three playoff series in this century (losing twice). The Patriots have twice beaten the tomato can Texans in the NFL playoffs.

But Boston-Dallas in the postseason?

There’s nothing. The 2024 NBA Finals represent the first playoff meeting between professional teams from Dallas and Boston.

There are, of course, connections having nothing to do with the playoffs.

How many of you know that Ted Williams managed the original Texas Rangers? Ted was American League manager of the year with the Washington Senators in 1969, but didn’t have any luck when the franchise moved to Arlington, Texas, in 1972. The Rangers went 54-100 in Ted’s one and only season in the Lone Star State.

The Sox had some pretty interesting games against the Rangers when young Roger Clemens wanted to show off against his boyhood hero, Nolan Ryan. Don Zimmer famously managed the Sox and the Rangers and Jose Canseco darkened the doorstep of both franchises.

The Patriots are 6-9 lifetime against the Dallas Cowboys. After the NFL-AFL merger, New England lost its first seven games to Dallas, not winning until 1999 under Pete Carroll. Things got better when Bill Belichick and Tom Brady came on board, but the most recent meeting was a 38-3 Cowboy romp in October of 2023.

Bob Kraft certainly has a rivalry with Jerry Jones. The Patriots owner simply can’t believe that Jones is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, but there’s (thus far) no gold jacket for RKK.

Bill Parcells coached the Cowboys after he left New England and still has a cellphone with a 214 area code. I’m hoping this means that Jones is still paying the Tuna’s phone bill.

The Bruins have some interesting trade history with the Dallas Stars, who used to be the Minnesota North Stars. In 2013, Boston GM Peter Chiarelli traded Tyler Seguin to the Stars in a seven-player deal. Seguin worked out pretty well for Dallas. The Bruins got Loui Eriksson, Reilly Smith, Matt Fraser, and Joe Morrow.

The Dallas GM who made that deal was Jim Nill, a former Bruin who came to Boston in a trade that sent the popular Peter McNab to Vancouver in 1984. I am told that some Globe wiseguy composed a newspaper headline that read “Bruins Get Nill for McNab.’’ I certainly hope that’s true.

Celtics-Mavericks? Who has a memory?

Boston’s greatest basketball gift to the Mavericks is Rick Carlisle, who coached there from 2008 to 2021 and won Dallas’s only NBA championship in 2011.

Prior to Thursday, the Celtics and Mavericks had met 86 times since the Mavs were invented in 1980. Boston holds a 46-40 edge in regular-season competition. The Celtics won their first 11 games against the expansion Mavericks.

I covered the Celtics every day for four seasons in the 1980s, but none of the games stand out.

My favorite moment with the Celtics in Dallas came in November of 1984, when Larry Bird and Quinn Buckner were enjoying a day-off beer in the atrium lobby of the Hyatt Regency Dallas, which was attached to Reunion Arena, then home of the Mavericks.

Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA” tour was in full bloom and the Boss was playing at the Mavs arena on the Celtics’ day off.

Bird was startled when hundreds of rock fans swept through the Hyatt lobby en route to the show.

“What’s all this commotion about,’’ asked Larry.

“Bruce Springstreen is playing next door tonight,’’ we told Bird.

“Who’s that?’’ asked Larry.

“Put it this way, Larry,’’ we told him. “He’s the you of rock ‘n’ roll.’’

“He must be pretty good then,’’ said Bird.

Two nights later, the Celtics beat the Mavs, 114-99, with Bird registering 40 points, 10 rebounds, and 9 assists. He was on his way to his second of three consecutive MVP Awards.

Fast forward 40 years and the Mavericks are in town with Luka Doncic, a 25-year-old who reminds us a little of . . . Larry Bird.

“When I first saw Luka, I thought of Larry right away,’’ said Cedric Maxwell, who was MVP of the Finals while playing with Bird in 1981. “Luka has the same ability to control the game. He’s got Larry’s tenacity, arrogance, all that good stuff Larry had.

“But one thing bothers me,’’ added Max. “People keep saying Luka is the best player in the series. He’s not. The best player in this series is Jayson Tatum.’’

Dallas-Boston.

Game 2 is Sunday night on Causeway Street.
