  • Most  cruise companies  offer their clients to take care of their visa as part of the holiday package. The passenger will need to provide the cruise operator with the relevant documents and the service is often more expensive than applying for a visa oneself.
  • Visitors who book their trip with a  travel agency  are in a similar position as these businesses often include visa handling as one of their services.
  • Passengers can always decide to  apply at their nearest Cambodian visa or consulate  in person following the standard procedure.

A traveler belonging to a country where the visa for traveling to Cambodia is not required for its citizens as per allowed by the Cambodian government will be allowed to travel around the country of Cambodia on a cruise ship without needing a special specific visa for the same.

Since there can be many reasons for a person to travel to Cambodia on a cruise ship like for tourism purposes or even for business purposes, Cambodia offers several different types of visas for the people wishing to travel to the country on a cruise ship. But unfortunately, if you wish to travel to Cambodia on a cruise ship then this facility of obtaining a visa on your arrival in the country is unavailable.

To travel to the country on a cruise ship, all the tourists are required to apply for a visa and obtain a visa for traveling to Cambodia on a cruise ship before their travel. to the country.  Thus, all the holidaymakers planning on a cruise trip to Cambodia, please do obtain a visa before you travel to the country as you will be denied entry without a visa in Cambodia.

How to get a Cambodia visa on arrival, Siem Reap Airport

  • Opens in a new window

In 2023, Cambodia once again began welcoming all tourists and travellers back into the country with no COVID-19 vaccination, testing or quarantine requirements.

The Cambodia Visa on Arrival is now available as it was before the pandemic.

Getting a tourist visa for Cambodia ‘The Kingdom of Wonder’ is one of the most straightforward immigration processes we’ve experienced so far when travelling. UK citizens and many other nationalities can get a 30-day Cambodia visa on arrival (VOA).

It should be noted that some ASEAN nationalities are exempt from needing a Cambodia visa for a specified number of days; whilst some nationalities aren’t eligible for a Cambodia visa on arrival and have to obtain one in advance. More details can be found on the Royal Embassy of Cambodia website.

Each time we’ve visited Cambodia, either on holiday or to live in Siem Reap as Digital Nomads , we’ve gotten a VOA. This post is based on those experiences, validated with up-to-date information from the Royal Embassy of Cambodia.

How to get a Cambodia visa on arrival, Siem Reap Airport

A Cambodia visa on arrival can be obtained on arrival at Siem Reap or Phnom Penh International Airports or at several land-border crossings between Cambodia and Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam, the exact checkpoints are in the Royal Embassy of Cambodia Visa FAQs .

Types of Cambodia Visa on Arrival

There are two types of Cambodia visa on arrival. The different Cambodia visas on arrival costs a different amount:

Cambodia Tourist Visa (T)

The single-entry Cambodia Tourist visa (T-class) costs $30 (£23.30), is valid for 30 days and can be renewed once for a further 30 days without leaving the country.

Cambodia Ordinary Visa (E)

If you know you’ll be staying in Cambodia for longer than 60 days, don’t get a tourist visa. A renewable Cambodia Ordinary visa (E-class), also known as a Cambodia Business visa is a better option. This single entry Cambodia E-visa on arrival costs $35 (£27.50) and is again valid for 30 days, after which you can extend it.

IMPORTANT: Between 1st January 2024 and 30th June 2024, the Cambodian government is trialling a Cambodia e-Arrival Card. During this trial period, your Cambodia Visa can be obtained either online as the new e-Arrival Card (CeA) or using the traditional Cambodia Visa on Arrival paper form, the process for which is detailed later in the post.

Cambodia E-Arrival Card

From 1st July 2024 when the Cambodia e-Arrival card trial period ends (July 1, 2024), all travellers, must submit a Cambodia Arrival card online before their trip to Cambodia.

The Cambodian e-Arrival Card immigration and health information form should be completed no later than seven days before your trip to Cambodia. Whilst you can submit the online form earlier than this, you should note that the Cambodian government won’t process it until nearer your arrival date.

The simple steps to complete the Cambodia e-Arrival Card online are:

  • Complete e-Arrival Card : enter all required details, including standard personal data, passport details, and travel information; be sure to double-check that all the details are correct.
  • Pay the fee : use one of the available online payment methods to pay.
  • Check your email:  after you’ve made the payment, check your email inbox for the confirmation.

Once you receive your confirmation email with your e-Arrival Card receipt, I recommend saving it to your phone and also printing a paper backup copy, as you may need to present this when you arrive in Cambodia.

Cambodia Visa on Arrival Requirements (Paper Form)

The traditional paper form process for a Cambodia Visa on Arrival is outlined below, however, be aware that if you arrive on or after 1st July 2024, then you must follow the E-Visa process detailed above.

To get a traditional Cambodia visa on arrival you will need:

  • A passport that is valid for six months or more.
  • Two empty pages in your passport.
  • A completed Cambodia visa application form; supplied on the plane, or, at the airport or land border crossing.
  • The visa fee mentioned above must be in US dollars.

Cambodia Visa on Arrival Process

Cambodia Visa on Arrival in a passport

The process for getting a Cambodia visa on arrival before heading off to your hotel, hostel or guesthouse couldn’t be simpler. You just need to hand the immigration staff your completed Cambodia visa on arrival form, passport and Cambodia visa fee. They’ll process your application in about five to ten minutes whilst you wait, then give your passport back. It will have the visa inside and you’ll be good to go.

CamboTicket

If you’re planning on staying for longer than two months be sure to double check your you’ve been given the correct visa. An Ordinary (E-Class) visa should have an eight-digit number preceded by ‘EI’ on the left of the visa.

Overstaying Your Cambodia Visa

There is a $10 (£7.80) per day charge if you overstay your Cambodia visa, which you’ll have to pay when you leave the country, you may also be charged for a visa extension, but this doesn’t always happen.

It is permitted to overstay for up to 30 days; if you overstay for longer you’ll not only be liable for the daily overstay charge, but you could also possibly be imprisoned, deported or face a ban on future travel to Cambodia.

Cambodia Visa Extensions and Work Permits

Tourist (T-Class) visas can be extended for one month without leaving the country, for subsequent renewals, you have to leave Cambodia and return in order to renew it.

Ordinary (E-Class) visas can be extended for 1, 3, 6, or 12 months by getting one of the new set of four E-class visas introduced in 2017. The 1 and 3-month extensions are single entry and the 6 and 12-month extensions are multiple entry .

Since September 4th 2017 the laws on long-term visa extensions have changed and work permits are now needed to renew the 6-month and 12-month Ordinary (E-Class) visas. The 1 and 3-month (single entry) extensions can, however, still be extended indefinitely. The Business2Business Cambodia website has more information on getting a long-term extension for a Cambodia Visa . They also have details on how to get work permits.

Have you gotten your Cambodia visa differently to ‘on arrival’, maybe online or in advance? Tell us about it in the comments.

cambodia visa for cruise passengers

Nice Information.

cambodia visa for cruise passengers

I am on a cruise visiting one city (Sihanoukville). I believe I (U.S. citizen) need a visa, but it sounds like I cannot get an evisa as we won’t be arriving at one of the places where it is accepted. I’m wondering what options are available to get a non-evisa document to be able to cruise. I imagine the cruise line will not let me embark without an appropriate visa.

EVisas are only available if you arrive into Siem Reap or Phnom Penh international airports. So yes you are correct you can’t get an evisa if arriving into a seaport.

However, usually, the cruise company will take care of your visa application, so I would speak to them in the first instance.

If they do not arrange it for you – you have the following options:

Cambodia Visa on Arrival: Cruise ship passengers can get a visa-on-arrival at Cambodian seaports. This should be the same Visa on Arrival process as in my post

Cambodia Transit Visa (D): IThe short-term transit visa (D category) is available to tourists visiting the country on a cruise ship. It allows you to stay in the country for up to 96 hours. You can apply for this visa through a consulate or authorized travel agencies. (I assume your Cruise company)

I hope this helps

Thanks Tanya

I am in the same boat (pun intended), is there a way to get a VOA in advance to avoid any complications with the cruise company when boarding the ship?

As far as I know no, the e-Visa in Ruth’s comment above and my reply is the ‘online in advance’ visa on arrival which you cannot get in advance if arriving into a Seaport.

So you’d need to use one of the other options I mentioned in my reply to Ruth.

Great stuff, I move to work and live with a friend on one of the Koh Ring Islands end of august and this article was far more helpful than the other pages I’ve been trawling through.

thank you so much for this great article! very helpful indeed and highly appreciated! is there any other document you need or requirement to fulfill in order to be able to get the “ordinary” e-visa on arrival?

Hi, glad you found it helpful. All the requirements are in the article, there shouldn’t be anything additional that you need.

Hope you enjoy Cambodia.

cambodia visa for cruise passengers

Hi, I’m only making a transfer in Cambodia. Will I need a visa?

You’ll only need a visa if you’re going through immigration and leaving the airport. If you’re just transiting through the airport you should not need a visa.

cambodia visa for cruise passengers

If I apply for visa extension the next day or a few days after arriving will the new visa validity start counting from the moment they give it to me or after the ordinary visa 30 days have passed? Thank you

After the original visa expires!

cambodia visa for cruise passengers

Are there any other costs? I was going to do Evisa but the cost is $109, do you know why there is such a cost variation?

No they are the only costs. Evisa will always cost much more as they will add on a fee for doing it for you. There’s absolutely no need to do it that way as it’s completely straight forward to just get a visa on arrival!

"NEW" visa for Cruise Passengers -Cambodia

WE are on a cruise  that visits Sihanoukville 1 day only  and I believe that the place has deteriorated

a lot in the last few years.   Anyway we are told we have to have a visa and the evisa is not

available to cruise passengers, which means an expensive full visa is required

or the ship may do a group one that would save the hassle.

However  I have come across this

iVisa.com  have this on their website Cambodia Transit Visa (D): In 2023, the Royal Government of Cambodia announced

the short-term transit visa (D category) to tourists visiting the country on a cruise ship.

It allows you to stay in the country for up to 96 hours.

You can apply for this visa through a consulate or authorized travel agencies.

I am seeking further details as this is new for 2023   but wonder if anyone else has found

anything anywhere.

Or  does anyone know if you HAVE to have visa even if not getting off the ship?

I'm not sure, but I think I read that the evisa is not accepted at Sihanoukville port, only at certain other ports in Cambodia.  So I'd see if you can confirm that what I read is true.  I'm looking into getting my visas from the Cambodian embassy in Washington DC.  They have something on their website that indicates people can get a regular sticker visa attached to their passports that allows one-time entry into Cambodia for 30 days.  It's $30 and you must go in person, with money order, photo, copy of your passport, passport, etc. You can't apply until 2 months prior to your visit.  But at least it's reasonably-priced, and no mailing or keeping of passports is required. So if you have a Cambodian embassy or consulate anywhere close by, you may want to explore that option.  Otherwise, you may need to pay the cruise line to get a visa for you from GenVisa, Visa Central, or a similar company.

As for actually having to have a visa for Sihanoukville, for Sihanhoukville officials or the cruise line, I have no clue.  I've also read that the city is not what it used to be.  Nevertheless, the temples there sound worth visiting, and I don't need much to be happy in a new port, so I don't want to stay on the ship that day.

Yes all you say is correct.  We have had to get the ship to do ours its too expensive to go

to  the embassy in London and I got no reply from the consular service in London or Cambodia

regarding the Type D visa.

I can’t find anyway to apply for the D visa either.

But you can apply for an evisa at evisa.gov.kh

Think I’ll ring my cruise line first.

The evisa is not acceptable for arrival by sea  they can be only used

I will be sailing on the Oceania Riveria which has a stop in Sihanoukville in Feb. 24. A transit visa issued on arrival is needed. The cruiseline tells us they will obtain the visa for us and bill our onboard account for the fee.

Lucky you. Regent wants $99.

On 10/22/2023 at 8:52 AM, Aulanis said: iVisa.com  have this on their website Cambodia Transit Visa (D): In 2023, the Royal Government of Cambodia announced the short-term transit visa (D category) to tourists visiting the country on a cruise ship. It allows you to stay in the country for up to 96 hours. You can apply for this visa through a consulate or authorized travel agencies.

Has anyone found any place to apply for a D visa? The U.S. Cambodian Embassy website lists several visa types but not D. I see nothing on the web.

iVisa also says you can apply for a visa on arrival, but getting on a line for visas while trying to make a ship's tour doesn't sound appealing. I may be stuck with Regent's $99.

How much did Princess charge for the visa?

I haven't cruised yet, but have been having a horrible time finding a way to get a visa.  Oceania charges $89, the Cambodian Embassy in Washington DC keeps extending their "closed for Visa services" announcement on their website, and isn't sure if the evisa can be accepted for Sihanoukville seaport.  From what I've read, it's not accepted, but I suppose things MAY have changed.  But last month an Oceania cruiser reported that he/she had purchased an evisa and a few days pre-arrival, Oceania notified them that it wouldn't be accepted upon arrival in Cambodia.  So a  visa was purchased on the ship.  The visa company that Oceania uses had an announcement a week or two ago that evisas for tourism weren't being done by them because Cambodia had the whole process on hold.  The embassy employee told me that system changes were being made, and they were having problems, which is why the date an evisa could be obtained kept being delayed.  So if anyone has any recent information about how a tourist visa can now be obtained, I'd love to hear it.

Curious - did they give a price?  I think it's $89, but I may be wrong.

We paid $89 through Oceania.

We just returned home today from 28 days in Southeast Asia, and got all our own Visas before leaving home.  We were fortunate to have travel to Massachusetts in the month prior to our departure because there's a Cambodian consulate there.  I had a hard time reaching them by phone (looks to be a 1 or 2 man office, and I think they're not there 9-5 every day) but we were able to make an appointment the week prior, arrive with the appropriate paperwork (downloaded from the internet and filled out) and $30 cash for each of us.  It took less than 15 minutes total.

Obtained Vietnam and Indonesia on our own, through the internet, and did our "landing card" for Singapore once we were traveling, as it can't be done before 72 hours prior to entry.

You were lucky.  I started my Cambodia quest in late Octobera, although I believe back then the official word was that it couldn't be obtained until 2 months pre-arrival, so I had to wait. And I had a lot of trouble contacting the embassy here.  The phone just rang no matter when I called.  At least when I finally drove there, someone answered the intercom!

At least I have the Vietnam one taken care of.

So I'm curious now.  Did you go to Sihanoukville, Cambodia?  If so, was there a shuttle from the port/ship to the gate outside of the port.  I hear it's a bit of a walk.   And was there a shuttle that went somewhere outside the port and into the city? And if you went to Ho Chi Minh City, did you dock at Hiep Phuoc?  Was there a shuttle into center city?

Sorry - we had a "deviation plan" - our ship was overnighting in Bangkok, followed by a day at sea, followed by Sihanoukville, followed by Phu My, Vietnam.  We left the ship early the first day it was in Bangkok and did 2 days in Bangkok, flew to Siem Reap and did 2 days there, then flew to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) for a day of touring and then meeting back up with the ship.  We were really pleased with our decision - we were able to spend more time in the places that required it and not waste time with sea days or industrial ports.

I don't know if it was because our ship was the first to call there this season, but at Sihanoukville the Prime Minister came to the dock and gifted every passenger with a local-made scarf as they disembarked.  (Since we missed that port, we only learned about it when we saw the photo gallery with the photos.)  Sorry we missed that!

Yes there was a shuttle bus to take you to the Port gate     and we docked in Port PHU MY

We absolutely loved our time in Sihanoukville (Cambodia)  We had an amazing Tour and took us everywhere, fabulous price and much much cheaper than same ships tour.  Everybody who joined us also thought it was FAB.  ALL organised before we left home !!

HAL  Charged USD50  pp   for our Cambodia visa.

More than some but less than others and less the HAL online guess of Usd60

Only alternative was to visit embassy in London  which would have cost us more

for travel.

"I don't know if it was because our ship was the first to call there this season, but at Sihanoukville the Prime Minister came to the dock and gifted every passenger with a local-made scarf as they disembarked. "

Hi   The reception/party  was because  when the Westerdam  got stuck in Asia

on the outbreak of covid  Cambodia was the only country that would let them dock

and allow the cruisers and some of the staff to travel to the airport to get home.

If you google  Sihanoukville  and westerdam   there are  news reports.

We  were not going ashore but on seeing the port talk decided we would try

and walk to a Temple.  By chance we met some others doing the same and they had

a map on their phone so asked if we could follow them.

It was well worth the visit though the 4km or so walk there and back in almost 100deg F  what a challenge.

Sihanoukville is certainly an interesting city, and I want to see all I can. And presenting a scarf to every passenger after a previous Westerdam ship was helped by the city is wonderful. I'm still a little unsure:  For anyone who did not take a ship's excursion, was there a port shuttle to the port exit, and if so, did it go into the outskirts of the city there, possibly near the "heart" below?  (Yaminid, I wasn't sure if you were referring to Sihanoukville or Phu My port.)  As for walking to Wat Krom, I'm not sure I'll be up for that.  But I'm hoping to take a tuk tuk or something to see it, and other things. We'll see how things go.

That would be us then 😉    When we were there, there was a free port shuttle

as they said you could not walk off!!   However  you could the shuttle is a small bus

and coming back  we waited ages and ended up  walking back to the ship.

This pic  shows the  end of the inner harbour wall that the bus  goes over

then it turns right along to the  Heart place you show.   Second pic if  you Zoom in on

it you can see the back of the heart  and a christmas tree  near the centre of the pic at the end of the second long building.

So it not far at all.      As you leave the area there are many tuktuks available we dined later with someone who had taken one to the Temple.

They HAL  also had a paid shuttle to the beach but think it

was only mentioned  the night before after they had sold all the tours they could.

It was either 15usd  or 25usd return,  cant recall as we didnt use it.

Cambodia Issues Short-Term Transit Visas to Tourists Visiting Cambodia by Cruise Ship

Cambodia Issues Short-Term Transit Visas to Tourists Visiting Cambodia by Cruise Ship

The Royal Government of Cambodia has announced that it will offer short-term transit visas to tourists visiting the country on a cruise ship. The new policy, effective from 1 March 2023, allows international tourists to apply for a transit visa type D for a five-day stay.

According to the Ministry of Tourism, transit visas (D) are issued to non-immigrant foreigners who are transit passengers, drivers, staff, employees, and active personnel on vehicles, trains, ships, or planes. The visa was issued by a Sub Decree on 10 June 2016, on “Procedures to allow Non-Immigrant Foreigners to Enter, Leave and Reside in the Kingdom of Cambodia”.

The announcement of the short-term visa comes after a surge in foreign tourists visiting Cambodia by water, particularly to Sihanoukville by ship, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since 29 December 2022, at least seven cruise ships carrying 3,133 passengers have docked at the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port.

Cambodia’s Minister of Tourism, HE Thong Khon, stated that the country received around 400,000 international tourists in January 2023, with about 5,000 arriving by water, particularly by colossal cruise ships. This marks an increase of 1,283% compared to the same month in 2022.

The Cambodian government has been taking steps to encourage foreign visitors to the country to aid in tourism recovery following the pandemic. From 1 September 2022, the government allowed long-term foreign residents to apply for a visit to the Angkor and Koh Ker temples complex once a year, free of charge.

The new short-term transit visa policy is expected to promote tourism in Cambodia further and make it easier for cruise ship passengers to explore the country during their travels.
