5 things to know about Old Town's Car Cruise

The Old Town Saturday Nite Classic Car Show and Cruise is revving up for the continuation of its 32nd-year celebration. We’ve reconnected with an 84-year-old Kissimmee man who wouldn’t dare to miss a week.

Dave Dean owns a bunch of garages on his Kissimmee property. Tucked inside one of them is a brand new addition to his family — a ‘57 Thunderbird. “The interior is perfect,” he says. “Couldn’t get any nicer.”

The peachy beauty is Dean’s fifth car. He restores others, but this one he owns. He admits it’s not the easiest to drive. “No power steering, no power brakes, no power seat, no power windows.” But it’s the one you’ll likely see cruisin’ down Old Town, an iconic walking district of throwback shops and nostalgic events.

Old Town opened 34 years ago. It’s a recreation of a classic Florida town at the turn of the century. It boasts 60 unique shops, themed restaurants, and family-friendly attractions.

The Old Town Saturday Nite Classic Car Show starts at 1 p.m. and welcomes show-quality cars that are from 1985 and older. The cars begin cruising around the theme park at 8:30 p.m.

The park throws special events, too. For example, on Oct. 1, 2022, is the Corvette Only Car Cruise featuring more than 300 classic and new corvettes. Vett fest is now in its 17th year. Spectators can watch for free. Parking is free, too.

Every Friday, residents and visitors can go to Old Town Orlando for their Friday Car Cruise. The All American Muscle Car Cruise features show-quality American-made Muscle Cars from 1964 and newer, and American classics 1988 and older.Cars will be on display starting at 4 pm, with a live 70's and 80's Rock n’ Roll band taking the music stage starting at 7 pm.

The car cruise begins on the brick streets at 8:30 pm.

The Friday Car Cruise takes place at Old Town. Old Town is located at Marker 9 on Highway 192, three miles east of the main entrance to Walt Disney World Resort. For more info on Old Town, view their profile page .

An amphibious automobile suited for both land and water.

The model 770 Amphicar was named after its ability to achieve speeds of seven knots in the water and 70 mph on land. 3,878 Amphicars were manufactured in Germany from 1961 tp 1968. During that time 3,046 were imported into the United States. The Amphicar is rear-engined and uses a 4-cylinder British-built Triumph Herald moter producing 43 hp. All Amphicars are convertibles, offered to civillians in four colors; Beach White, Regatta Red, Lagoon Blue, and Fjord Green (Aqua). Two American Presidents owned Amphicars; Jimmy Carter and Lyndon B. Johnson. President Johnson would invite friends and even foreign dignitaries to his Texas ranch for a joyride in his car. Today, The BOATHOUSE® is the only location in the world that offers Captain Guided Amphicar tours in a unique water experience around Lake Buena Vista, Florida.

Old Town’s Car Show & Cruise 31st Anniversary

Old Town will be celebrating 31 years of the Saturday Nite Classic Car Show and Cruise on March 20, 2021. The event will be a continuation of last year’s 30th Anniversary postponed due to Covid-19.

The Saturday Nite Classic Car Show and Cruise has been a weekend tradition for over 30 years. Dedicated car owners have been loyally showing off their cars through all types of Florida weather, including hurricanes and a pandemic, to be recognized as America’s Longest Running Weekly Car Show.

Guests are invited to drive down memory lane when Old Town welcomes show-quality 1983 and older hot rods, street rods, and antiques. Cars will begin lining up at 10:00 am with a car parade, known as the “cruise,” down Old Town’s brick main street at 8:30 pm. The day-long celebration includes entertainment, giveaways, and more. Free live concerts on Old Town’s Main Stage begins at 1:00 pm with the “Saloonatix” and an evening headliner at 7:00 pm.

Old Town hosts the Classic Car Show and Cruise every Saturday rain or shine. It’s free for car owners to participate, and spectators to enjoy.

Central Florida Street Rod Association - Activities

Club Activities

CFSRA members attend many of the local cruise-ins both individually and as a group. Most often we go to monthly cruise-ins held in Lake Wales, Lakeland, Plant City and Winter Haven.

Recently club members have been cruising on selected Friday nights as a group to a local drive-in on for a burger and bull session.

Christmas Party

The club holds a Christmas party each year to reward those members who have been active in club events throughout the year.

Every year some CFSRA members attend the NSRA South Nationals in Knoxville, TN where they conduct kids games.

Miscellaneous

In the past, the club members have been asked to participate in some unique events such as chaeuffering a bride and groom to a wedding, driving a couple to an anniversary party, parking cars as backdrop for a 50’s party and displaying their cars at a local nursing home to cheer up the residents. These are not club organized events but allow members to demonstrate their individual support of the local community.

Every Friday and Saturday night hundreds of classic car enthusiasts gather at Kissimmee Old Town for the classic car cruises. Friday night is for more recent classics (post 1970s) as well as some more exotic marques and highly customised vehicles. Saturday night brings out the true classics. The cars date back as far as the 1920s, and there is also a healthy smattering of customised classics and hot rods. You are just as likely to see a 1940s Ford Anglia street rod with a 500 horsepower fuel-injected V8 as you are a classic Cadillac or even a Volkswagen Beetle with the original ‘Herbie’ paint job.

All the cars park up before the parade around Old Town, allowing plenty of time to stroll around and admire the workmanship and quality of detail. Their owners are always keen to chat about their pride and joy, so don’t be shy to ask a few questions if something catches your eye.

Activity increases in the half hour before the parade. The air is filled with the smells of partially combusted hydrocarbons and the deep growls from oversized engines threaten to drown out the altogether smoother sound of the rock and roll band live on stage.

The parade itself lasts anywhere from 10 minutes to a half hour depending on how many cars have registered. Bells and sirens from a vintage fire engine compete for attention against horns that sound like strangled geese. There might even be a bubble machine or two. It all adds up to a carnival like atmosphere as the cars parade at walking pace right through the center of Old Town.

After the parade most of the cars park up again, allowing another opportunity to wonder around the classics, admiring the paint jobs and the reflections in the highly polished chrome.

Both nights have a live band on stage. It’s mostly 50s, 60s rock and roll which just adds to the dime-in-the-jukebox feel.

The current timings (as at December 2004) for the Friday night cruise allow for vehicle registration from 5pm onwards with the parade starting at 9pm. On Saturdays the cars will arrive all through the afternoon and the parade starts at 8:30pm. It can get quite busy so allow plenty of time to find a parking space.

If a bit of Detroit iron floats your boat or you are missing the smell of valvoline and WD40, take a spin up to Kissimmee Old Town on a Friday or Saturday evening.

Join us every Saturday and take a trip down memory lane. The Old Town Classic Car Show has been a local tradition for over 30 years, it is one of the premier weekly car shows in Central Florida. The Saturday Classic Car Show begins at 1:00pm and welcomes show-quality 1985 and older hot rods, street rods, and antiques. Cars will cruise at 8:30pm and all cars registered can participate.

The Classic Car Show is free for participants and free for the public to attend. It's the perfect outing for families of every generation, young and old, to enjoy.

Exclusive for Old Town Cruisers - Each time you cruise at Old Town on Friday and Saturday during the month, you’re entered for the chance to win $1,000! PARTICIPATING CLASSIC CARS: enter Old Town from Highway 192 under the east (left) side of the Jukebox signs where you’ll be greeted by Event Staff. They will then direct you to a security escort down the brick streets. Please do not drive on the bricks without permission.

2 killed in fiery crash involving semi, box truck in Polk County

POLK COUNTY, Fla. – A man and woman were killed Wednesday morning in a fiery crash involving a semi-truck and box truck, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

The double fatal wreck happened on Highway 37 near Ft. Green Mine Road.
