Carnival cruise food: The ultimate guide to restaurants and dining on board
On a Carnival cruise, food is always one of the highlights. From Guy Fieri burgers to fancy steaks at Fahrenheit 555, you'll find endless options to satisfy your hunger in a highly enjoyable fashion. In fact, there's often more to eat and explore than you could possibly have time for in a single sailing.
If you're planning your next cruise and want to know which Carnival restaurants to expect on board, you've come to the right place. While certain dining venues remain a standard across all ships — like the much-loved Lido Deck buffet — the options keep expanding with every new ship launch. Plus, older ships are constantly being refurbished and updated with new restaurants. That's why we put together this comprehensive list of Carnival cruise restaurants and where you can find them.

Carnival restaurants available fleetwide
Coffee bar or javablue cafe.
A la carte pricing; snacks
Black coffee and tea are free at the buffet and in the main dining room, but you'll want to come here for specialty coffee drinks like espresso or cold brew. You can also purchase milkshakes and baked goods when you need an extra pick-me-up (or grab free Danish pastries and croissants in the morning).
Dining room
Included; breakfast and dinner
The main dining room serves a sit-down breakfast and the nightly three-course dinner that's included in your cruise fare. Even better, Carnival's chief culinary officer, Emeril Lagasse, is now behind many of the dining room's new menu items. On Carnival, the main dining room comes with less pretense than on many other cruise lines. In fact, it's not uncommon for your servers to break out in song and dance by the end of the night.
Don't miss other special dining experiences like the complimentary Seaday Brunch menu or the family-friendly Dr. Seuss-themed breakfast for an additional fee ($10 to $15 per adult; $8 to $10 per child), which includes meet-and-greets with characters.

Lido Marketplace
Included; breakfast, lunch and dinner
Carnival's buffet on the Lido Deck has all the staple stations to keep you fed from morning until night. Try the deli counter, barbecue spot, pasta bar or Asian noodle station. Don't miss the always-essential salad bar or pizza station. Finish up with soft serve ice cream, frozen yogurt or an enormous cake slice and other goodies from the dessert station.
Included; snacks
No cruise experience is complete without on-demand soft serve. Open on the Lido Deck until midnight, the Swirls station serves up frozen yogurt and soft serve ice cream in the classic flavors of vanilla, chocolate and strawberry, or you can enjoy your own combo swirl. The best part is it's self-serve, so no one can judge you for how often you come back for another cone.
The Chef's Table
Fixed price; dinner
This exclusive multicourse dining experience hosted by the ship's master executive chef takes place in untraditional spaces like the galley or library to give you a behind-the-scenes VIP feel. (Some newer ships even have a dedicated Chef's Table dining room with a window into the galley.) You'll be part of a group of only 14 to 16 guests, and the evening kicks off with cocktails, hors d'oeuvres and a tour of the galley. The dinner menu itself changes based on what's in season or local to the port, but it always includes wine pairings and, of course, dessert.
24-hour room service
A la carte; all-day dining
When hunger calls at odd hours of the night or you're craving a meal from the comfort of your balcony, you can access 24-hour room service on your Carnival cruise ship. Just pick up your cabin's phone and place your order. While room service is generally only available for a cost, Carnival does offer free continental breakfast delivery to your room from 6 to 10 a.m.
Pizza delivery
Fixed price; all-day dining
You can order pizza on the Carnival Hub app to wherever you are on the ship, any time of day, for a delivery fee of $5 per pie. Pro tip: Take a picture of yourself showing where you're located on board to help the pizza delivery staff find you.
Pizzeria del Capitano or Pizza Pirate
Included; lunch and dinner
The all-day pizza station is going to be your go-to option when you get back from a day at port and the lunch buffet is already closed or when you're hungry after a late night of partying. Choose from five prepared pizza options, ranging from classics like margherita and pepperoni to other delicious Italian favorites like funghi and prosciutto. Order a slice or get a whole pie delivered through the Carnival Hub app.

Carnival cruise food: Frequently asked questions
How do seating times work in the main dining room?
Before sailing, you must choose your preferred dining format for the main dining room — either set dining times with assigned seating or a flexible option called Your Time Dining with open seating. If you prefer a preset dining time and a guaranteed table with the same server every night, you can choose early dining at 5:30 p.m. or late dining at 7:45 p.m.
With Your Time Dining, you can go to the main dining room anytime between 5:15 p.m. and 9 p.m. to be seated on a first-come, first-served basis. Just alert the dining room that you're coming on the Carnival Hub app so your table will be ready sooner. You can request a specific waiter, but more likely, you'll sit at a different table with a new waiter each evening. You might have to wait for a table at peak dinner times, but Carnival says the average wait time is usually less than 20 minutes, depending on your party size.
Either way, there's no need to make a reservation for the main dining room.
Do you need reservations for specialty dining restaurants?
Reservations are highly recommended for specialty restaurants, as these locations can book up in advance. You can make reservations online up to 48 hours before your cruise by visiting the "Manage My Booking/Cruise Manager" section of Carnival.com, at which time you'll also pay the cover charge for the restaurant.
Once you get on board, look for staff set up at booths to help you make specialty dining reservations. You can also call or visit the restaurant yourself to make a reservation, but seating times might be limited. Walk-ins are allowed but will get seated based on availability. If you don't make a reservation, be prepared for a wait or the possibility of being turned away if the restaurant is booked.
Can you enjoy unlimited food on your Carnival cruise?
It depends on where you eat! There are no limits on most of the included food options, and you can pretty much find free food on your cruise from the crack of dawn to late into the night. You can always eat as much as you want at the buffet in Lido Marketplace and other included food stations across the ship during their operating hours. In the main dining room, however, guests are limited to two free entrees (which, let's be honest, is still plenty!) before having to pay for additional entrees.
Is there a fee for room service?
Room service isn't free on Carnival anymore, except during breakfast. Instead, menu items are available to order a la carte. Complimentary continental breakfast can be delivered to your room between the hours of 6 and 10 a.m. For more details, check out our complete cruise ship room service guide .
Are kids menus available?
Most dining venues offer kids menus with plenty of safe options for picky eaters (think: chicken nuggets, macaroni and cheese, and spaghetti and meatballs). If you're dining at one of the specialty restaurants with a cover charge, there's a reduced fee for kids under 11.
Does Carnival still offer a Lobster Night?
Lobster is available for dinner nightly in the main dining room for a surcharge, but on cruise sailings of six nights or longer, Carnival offers one night per sailing (typically one of the formal nights) where a lobster tail is included as a complimentary entree option on the three-course menu. But don't expect to scarf down all the lobster you can eat. In line with Carnival's two-entree limit in the main dining room, guests now have to pay for any additional lobster past the first two entrees.

Complete Guide to Carnival Specialty Restaurants (Costs, Food, and More)
If you’re heading on a Carnival cruise, you likely know that you should bring your appetite. From the moment you step on board until you leave on debarkation day, there is food available all over the ship.
In other words, you will never go hungry.
But you might be overwhelmed by the amount of choices you have on the ship. In fact, Carnival Horizon — one of the line’s Vista-class of ships — has more than a dozen places to eat something on the ship. Carnival’s Mardi Gras has even more.
Many of those are free restaurants, like Guy’s Burger Joint , the buffet, and the main dining room. But Carnival has a number of specialty restaurants on each ship as well.
These specialty restaurants are for an additional charge, but are highly popular. They offer a place to sit and dine, often in a calmer and quieter atmosphere than the main dining room.
As well, specialty restaurants have different flavors and types of food. Whether you want Asian, BBQ, seafood, Italian, or a hearty steak you don’t have to hope the dining room or buffet is serving it. Simply pick the restaurant you want to eat there instead.
Specialty Restaurants on Carnival Ships
Note: Not every specialty restaurant listed here will be on every Carnival ship. Newer and recently remodeled ships will be more likely to have all the venues below…
Guy’s Pig & Anchor BBQ One of the most popular specialty restaurants on Carnival ships has to be Guy’s Pig & Anchor BBQ. A relaxed BBQ joint, it also brews its own beer. For lunch you can eat for free, but in the evenings they charge for meals. You can get most of your smoked meat favorites, including brisket, chicken, pulled pork and even ribs. Unlike some other paid restaurants, this one charges by the item. It’s about $8 for an entrée, $4 for an appetizer. A full rack of baby back ribs will set you back $12.
- Menu: BBQ; ribs, chicken, pork, sausage, salmon
- Cost: A la carte (~$8-12 for an entrée)
Cucina del Capitano Think of a classic Italian restaurant (complete with the red and white tablecloth) and you have a good idea of what to expect at Cucina del Capitano. The atmosphere is usually a little darker and more intimate, making it ideal for “date night.” During the day you can actually eat pasta here for no charge. In the evening it turns into a specialty Italian restaurant and serves a full menu. If it’s an Italian classic, you’ll find it on the menu. That includes everything from meatballs to spaghetti to chicken parm, along with some more unique dishes porcini rubbed beef short ribs.
- Menu: Italian; pastas, calamari, pork chops, veal, salads
- Cost: $15 per adult
Ji Ji Asian Kitchen Looking for your Asian food fix while at sea? This restaurant is it. It’s a classic high-end pan-Asian restaurant with the atmosphere you’d expect in an Asian theme, along with an open kitchen. On the menu you can get your favorites like slow-braised pork belly, pot stickers, Kung-Pao chicken, and sweet & sour shrimp. There are also a number of dishes with unique twists like Singapore chili shrimp. While most dishes have meat, vegetarians will also find a number of items to eat here.
- Menu: Pan-Asian; pot stickers, Asian chicken/shrimp dishes, spring rolls, noodles, etc.
Steakhouse Going by different names on different ships, places like Nouveau, Nick & Nora’s, and The Pinnacle all have one thing in common — they are the steakhouse on the ship. And if you’re wanting a meal that you’ll remember on your cruise (and the possibility that you will be too full to eat for the rest of the trip), then you’ll want to make a visit. It’s perhaps the most decadent menu across any restaurant. You’ll get hearty appetizers like shrimp cocktails or pork belly, followed by steak (including filet mignon), lobster, or lamb. Don’t forget the cheesecake for dessert.
- Menu: Steak; steaks, lobster, salads, crab cakes, potatoes, fish, lamb
- Cost: $38 per adult
- Menu: Seafood; shrimp, lobster, clam strips, fish
- Cost: A la carte
Bonsai Sushi A casual and relaxed sushi restaurant, Bonsai is a fun place to grab a bite of your favorite rolls. California rolls, spicy tuna, tempura rolls ($5-7 per roll), even bento boxes ($10) or noodle bowls ($7). They are all here. We also like that the location on at least some Carnival ships offers great people watching from your table. Sitting just off a main pathway on the ship, you can enjoy your sushi and watch the people go by. Want to sit outside? The restaurant on the Horizon offers some outdoor seating.
- Menu: Sushi
- Price: A la carte
Bonsai Teppanyaki While it’s not on many ships (just Carnival Horizon, Panorama, and Mardi Gras include it), Bonsai Teppanyaki makes a memorable meal. It’s hibachi-style where the chef performs a show for an entire table while also cooking a delicious meal. The fare is Asian-themed, including your choice of meat (or tofu) cooked up with fried rice and stir-fry.
- Menu: Asian; salmon, lobster, shrimp, chicken, steak, tofu, fried rice, vegetables
- Cost: $32 per person
The Chef’s Table If you consider yourself a foodie, then The Chef’s Table might be the ultimate experience for you. It’s the most exclusive dining on the ship — only about a dozen people can eat at a time. That’s because you get a personalized meal with one of the ship’s master chefs. Before you even eat there is a champagne reception and tour of the ship’s galley. From there, you’ll be cooked up a meal that varies based on what the chef and seasons dictate. For that reason there is no set menu… but you can be sure it will be tasty.
- Menu: Varies
- Cost: $75-95, depending on the ship
Emeril’s Bistro 1396 Making its debut on Carnival Mardi Gras, Emeril’s Bistro 1396 is celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse’s first restaurant on a cruise ship. It features tons of Cajun and creole favorites. That includes po-boys, gumbo, jambalaya, fried oysters, and more. Essentially, you can think of it as a trip to New Orleans onboard the ship. (The restaurant is located in the ship’s “French Quarter” section, after all.)
- Menu: New Orleans cuisine
Rudi’s Seagrill Another specialty restaurant making its debut on Carnival’s Mardi Gras, Rudi’s Seagrill is the work of Chef Rudi Sodamin. As you’d guess, it focuses on seafood in a fine-dining atmosphere that’s still approachable and not too stuffy. It’s open only for dinner and costs a decent amount, but offers a memorable place to have a meal. After all, many dishes are presented as a “face” that’s looking back at you. (Yes, really.)
- Menu: Seafood
Are Carnival’s Specialty Restaurants Worth It?
One of the biggest questions people ask is if the specialty restaurants are worth the extra cost. After all, if you’re already paying a lot of money to take a cruise — and many food items are already included — why bother paying extra for different meals?
If you are a frugal cruiser looking to save money, then you’ll likely think that the specialty options aren’t worth the extra money — especially if taking a shorter cruise. On a 3-5 day cruise, there are plenty of free options to eat, including pizza, tacos, burgers, the buffet, and the main dining room. These can keep you satisfied without spending extra.
If you like to let loose on your vacation or are taking a longer trip, then it’s our opinion that dining a couple of times at a specialty restaurant is well worth the money.
For one, they offer different flavors than you’ll find at other restaurants on the ship. When you’re tired of eating a lunch buffet, having the option to have some BBQ or Italian is great. Second, the quality and freshness of the food is the best on the ship. Finally, if you enjoy dining in a quieter atmosphere with fewer people, then specialty restaurants offer that sort of intimacy. They are never as crowded as you’ll find in the free locations.
What’s Included in My Meal?
If you order at an a la carte restaurant, you know exactly what you’ll get — whatever items you order and pay for. Other restaurants that have one set price and an open menu. In this case, you will get an appetizer, an entrée, and a dessert. If dining with another person, it’s a great opportunity to share items and try different things since you will each get your own starter, meal and dessert.
Drinks are not included. You have to pay for those just like if you were to visit the bar. Those with beverage packages can have them included for no extra free. If you don’t have a beverage package, then you’ll pay bar prices.
Do I Pay Gratuities at Specialty Restaurants?
As with all food and beverage services, you’ll pay gratuity for dining at specialty restaurants. The only question is if it is included in the headline price. Some restaurants such as the steakhouse include the tip amount in the price. Others, such as Bonsai Teppanyaki or a la carte restaurants you will be paying an additional 18% on top of the bill. Given that it’s customary to tip between 15-20% in a traditional restaurant, this figure isn’t out of line.
But you should know that while you are already being charged gratuity for dining at free restaurants (the charges automatically included at the of the cruise), you have to pay extra charges for dining at the specialty dining venues. It’s only a question of if it is already included or not.
What’s the Dress Code at Carnival’s Restaurants?
While it might seem that you need to get all fancied up to go to a specialty restaurant, that’s not always the case. Higher-end venues like the steakhouse or Chef’s Table follow the ship’s dress code for the evening. So if it’s formal night, you’ll want to dress up a bit.
Other restaurants, including Bonsai Sushi and Guy’s Pig & Anchor have “cruise casual” dress codes. That means you can dress down, but no swimsuits or tank tops are allows.
Should I Make Reservations?
If the specialty restaurant you want to eat at accepts reservations, then you should absolutely sign up as soon as you can. This gives you the most options for dining times. Note that some restaurants — such as Bonsai Sushi — don’t take reservations. You simply show up and get seated. If you don’t have a reservation at a restaurant, you can try to eat anyway. The staff will seat you if they have space.
Specialty restaurants on Carnival seem to be hit or miss — not in terms of food, but in terms of popularity. Anecdotally, we’ve noticed that some seem to stay busy while others, have smaller crowds. You can use this to your advantage to find a place to eat without a wait. It also helps to go during off hours.

Ultimate Guide to Food on a Carnival Cruise

Planning a cruise on Carnival and wondering what type of food is there on a Carnival Cruise?
You could never go hungry on a Carnival cruise. Ok – you could but I don’t know why you would. There are multiple options open during the day and there is free room service during the day if you aren’t too picky.
The buffet is open from early in the morning until around 3:00 in the afternoon. But don’t worry there is always pizza, a sandwich shop and guy’s burgers. After 6:00 there are a couple of options for dinner. But this is all very general – let’s get more specific.
Before we do this, I would like to make one general recommendation. Eat Italian or Asian food. Look around at the captain and the employees. Then ask yourself if you really think that fried chicken is going to be as good as it is at home.
Let’s start first thing in the morning. You wake up, you’re hungry. What to do, what to do? Well, at this point it is too late to order room service for breakfast. That had to be ordered prior to 5am. Your choices are the main dining room and the buffet. There are pros and cons to each choice and I go back and forth on which I prefer.
Main Dining Room Breakfast on a Carnival Cruise
You walk in and the hostess asks for room number and number of persons. You are typically sat at a large table with other people (you can ask for a private table but it may take them a minute to seat you). Your waiter of the morning will come around with coffee and water and ask if you want any juice. The menu is pretty basic and while you look over it someone will offer you a basket of scrumptious pastries.
Like every other experience in the dining room, you can order as much as you want. I normally order fruit, yogurt, eggs benedict or an omelet, bacon and hash browns.
What is included on a Carnival Cruise? Check out this post to find out!
Buffet Breakfast on a Carnival Cruise
There are multiple options if you choose to eat at the buffet. My favorite option is to go to the taco/burrito stand by the pool and get a breakfast burrito.
You get to choose what you want in your burrito from type of eggs, to meat, to toppings.
Burritos are great, but again, they have some other options there. There are also omelet stations around the buffet where you can get a made to order omelets with various fillings such as bacon, ham, cheese, spinach, peppers, etc.
And finally at the main line there are your typical English Breakfast foods: various types of eggs, fruits, yogurts, bacon, sausage, hashbrowns, toasts, pancakes, grits, oatmeal, and many types of pastries.
My advice: try multiple places for breakfast. There are so many breakfast options that you can almost try a different one every day!
Sea Day Brunch
Sea Day Brunch on Carnival Ships is sort of in a category of its own. It extends through breakfast and lunch and has its own menu.
There are some fantastic brunch options such a bacon mac and cheese. I don’t know what else to say about Sea Day Brunch. Secretly, I don’t really like it. I think it’s overrated, but a lot of people absolutely love it. Try it and see what you think!

Lunch on Carnival Cruise Ships
The buffet does not close between breakfast and lunch. It pares down for about 30 minutes while they switch over, but it never really closes.
Lunch is themed based on location. Again, stick with Asian or Italian food – in my experience its better – with the exception of Guy’s Burgers. One of my biggest challenges on a Carnival Cruise vacation is not eating a Guy’s Burger and fries every single day for lunch!
Depending on your ship there are specialty locations available for lunch. Some ships have a Mongolian wok somewhere and most ships turn their Asian and Italian specialty restaurants into an included food option at lunch. Be sure to check out alternative options for lunch!

There are many specialty restaurants on Carnival Cruises but that’s too big a topic for this post. In general, for dinner your choices are the main dining room or the buffet. The buffet includes many of the items on the main dining room menu for dinner so you can choose to sample many of the items available for dinner that night. For people who do not want to be waited on, or who don’t want to get out of their basketball shorts and beach cover-up, the buffet is a great choice. The food is comparable to the food at dinner at the dining room, just not quite as fresh.
There are a couple of main dining room choices: 6:00 seating, 8:15 seating or anytime dining. The 6:00 seating allows you to do things after dinner such as catch a show, comedy or take some sunset pictures. The 8:15 seating is much more relaxed and allows you more time by the pool before you have to start getting ready for dinner.
Anytime dining allows you to choose your dining time per night, but the larger your group the more difficult it can be to coordinate a dining time per day. Also, when you choose anytime you lose the relationship you form with your regular waiter.
After a few days with a set dining time my cup for decaf coffee shows up before I even start to order dessert. You miss that experiences when you do anytime dining. (You can request a waiter you prefer when you check in for anytime if you find a wait team that you really like.)
There are so many choices of what to eat on a Carnival cruise the problem is finding the time and stomach space to eat them all! But remember, you can order as many items off the menu as you want in the dining room and don’t limit yourself to the buffet for lunch!

10 Food & Beverage Tips For Your Carnival Cruise
Modified: Sep 18, 2020 by Stefanie Fauquet · This post may contain affiliate links · 35 Comments
Before I ever stepped foot on my first cruise ship, I put in hours and hours of research. I wanted to know every specific detail and I definitely didn't want to be the person who walks around looking lost the entire trip. I really wanted to make the most of my vacation. For some this is silly, but for others (and you know who you are!), planning is part of the fun of traveling.
One of my biggest focuses was food & beverages. I'm not ashamed to admit that I love to eat (and drink!). For me, it's a big part of the vacation experience.
Over the years I've racked up some tips that may be useful if you're planning your first cruise -- even better, have your first cruise booked. Here's a list of a few food & beverage tips and tricks that I've taken advantage of on one of my favorite cruise lines, Carnival .
Dining room etiquette - If you're a cruise newbie you've probably heard the rumors: You can order as much as you'd like in the dining room! Can't decide between two entrees? (Surf & Turf night gets me every time!) -- go for it! Your server won't bat an eye. That's the beauty of cruising. Now, I'm still mindful of the quantity as I do not encourage waste, but this is the time to try something new if you see a selection that interests you.
Cookies and milk - One of my daughter's favorite cruise routines is ordering cookies and milk from room service before bed. It's completely complimentary (though I would recommended extending a tip) and a great way to wind down after a fun day at sea.
Cheese plate to go - On the dessert menu in the dining room there is a cheese plate featured along with the nightly selection of desserts. I'm often too stuffed after dinner to order dessert (minus the occasional chocolate melting cake!). However, we often ask for cheese plate to go to take back to the stateroom, or another lounge for after-dinner cocktails. So far, the cheese plate has never gone to waste!
Bring a bottle of wine onboard - Carnival Cruise Line allows each adult guest to carry on 1 bottle of wine or champagne during embarkation. My husband and I usually take one bottle of each and have mimosas on our balcony with breakfast (OJ ordered from room service), and we'll share the wine before dinner in the same fashion. FYI, if you bring this wine into the dining room there will be a corkage fee.
Wine packages - Alternately, if you're flying in for your cruise, or don't want the hassle of carrying on bottles of wine, multi-bottle wine packages are available for purchase in advance or during your cruise. One of the greatest advantages of these packages is that you don't need to drink the full bottle each night at dinner. Your server will happily cork the bottle, store it safely, and then bring it to you the next evening.
Drink packages - One of the newer developments at Carnival is the Cheers! bar beverage program. For a flat price, based on the length of cruise, guests can enjoy a variety of wine, beer and spirits, up to a 15-drink maximum per day. If you plan on having multiple beverages a day (at approx. $10 each), the plan can be quite a savings! Packages also include soft drinks.
Free Lemonade & Iced Tea (and water too!) - One of the things I remember wondering before my first cruise was if I there was any complimentary beverages other than water. The good news is there is! Lemonade and Iced Tea flow freely on the Lido Deck and in the dining rooms. If you're feeling extra fancy you can mix both the lemonade and iced tea to make an Arnold Palmer (Please tell me I'm not the only one who does this!) . Of course, water is available too and it's perfectly safe to drink. Bring a refillable water bottle to save on trips to the Lido Deck.
Lunch in the dining room - Most cruisers rush to the Lido Deck for a buffet lunch on embarkation day, but a little-known fact is the dining room is also open during lunchtime. When we choose this option, there is usually only a handful of guests dining with us. The best part? Never having to wait for a table.
The Chef's Table - On select Carnival Cruise Line ships there is an option for dinner at The Chef's Table . Now, I haven't had the chance to attend this VIP experience, but it's on my list for a future cruise. The dinner starts with a tour of the galley followed by cocktails and hors d'oeuvres, and then a multi-course feast, prepared by a master chef. The menu is also unique to the experience. I think this would make a fantastic evening to celebrate a special occasion.
Steakhouse selections in the dining room - Carnival's Steakhouse is truly one of the best restaurants at sea. I've dined there at least 10 times and I've never had a bad meal. My husband and I have often joked that we would eat there every night if we could -- well, now we feasibly could with Steakhouse Selections in the dining room. For a $20 surcharge, anyone can upgrade their meal to include a 9-ounce filet mignon, a 1.5-pound Maine lobster, a 14-ounce New York strip steak, or surf and turf. This is a great option for families or when you're craving something different than what's on the menu.

A great tip for port of call days is to take a sack lunch. Order room service sandwiches, chips, cookies, fruit, and bottled water and pack them up to take with you. This is great for beach days with kids. It can really save you money since you won't be paying for overpriced, not so great, tourist marketed food. Then you can go into town for a nice sit-down, authentic dinner!
May 30, 2015 at 1:45 am
Even though a lot of people do take food off the ship, technically you are not allowed to as it is against the laws of the US and all the ports you visit. You can carry manufacturer pre-packaged food off the ship - unopened bags of chips, unopened prepackaged crackers, protein or cereal bars, things like that. You can bring them from home, or you can purchase some snacks in the funshops onboard. You might be able to grab a cereal box from the breakfast buffet. It is against the rules to carry off sandwiches, fruit, things like that.
May 30, 2015 at 11:59 am
I was going to say the same thing. Please do not take sandwiches and fresh foods off the ship. It is against the rules.

This is true. We usually just take small, sealed boxes of cereal from the buffet to snack on.
May 29, 2015 at 8:20 pm
We also packed lunches to taken off the boat. There is hardly anything disposable to take off of the boat though. The napkins are all cloth, utensils are all metal.
On our first cruise we were using the paper bags provided for feminine hygiene products to bring calzones and sandwiches off of the boat. The next time we brought zip lock bags 😉

It is against US laws and also of the ports you visit to take sandwiches, fruit, or other opened items off the ship... even though many people do. You can be made to throw the items away. Only items unopened items are allowed.

Go to the Sea Day Brunch in the dining room. It's a nice break to get out of the sun and avoid the buffet lines. There are fun breakfast options and yummy lunch options. I remember getting bacon mac and cheese last year. Yum!

Just a small addition, the "lemonade" is actually just lemon cordial for those in Australia who consider "lemonade" to be fizzy. But still and all - good. There is also orange juice at breakfast. When we went you could get cappuccinos, expressos and hot chocolates free from those machines in the buffet, I was able to mix hot chocolates and caps to get a mocha 🙂 Professionally made coffee is also available for a fee from the Cafe.
For those who are Gluten Free, they also have a lovely Gluten Free bread available in the buffet. This was really great for my fussy 7 year old who only ate the bread and chips for most of the cruise - the previous taster cruise on another line didn't have GF bread and he got sick because he only ate the wheat bread rolls. I took on a loaf on Carnival but was pleased to find the GF bread available at the buffet.

QGood to know about the "lemonade", thanks

By all means, do the chef's table next time. You will not be disappointed! We would have done it again, but the menu was the same as our previous cruise on a different ship. We love the steak house as well.

Can anyone suggest what shore excursion is the best one in Key West, Florida? I am looking at the three (3) Hop on Hop off tours, but not sure which one to take. Any suggestions?
Also want to take a survey to see which are the best drinks to order on the cruise ship.

The Conch Train is a nice hop on, hop off. If you want a fun place for lunch, check out Garbos Food cart. It's one of the highest rated places in KW. Fantastic fish tacos and that sort of thing. There's also a place called DJs Clam shack on Duvall. I spent 2 weeks in New England and ate about half a dozen lobster rolls, I honestly think the lobster rolls at DJs are better.

Another tip that I discovered too late.. Don't be in such a hurry to buy the "Cheers" drink cards. They were $250 each x 2=500.00. But, while in port (Miami) we were charged another $73.00 tax. Wait until out of port to avoid this additional tax expense.
June 04, 2015 at 10:43 pm
This is a GREAT tip! I ALWAYS forget about sales tax on drinks/services while in US port.
October 02, 2015 at 10:04 pm
We never had that issue when we cruised out of New Orleans, we had the auto gratuity added. But no tax, but they did add tax on any drinks we drank before we reached international waters. If you spent $500 and they added $73, it sure sounds like the gratuity to me. I doubt tax would be 15%.
June 05, 2015 at 8:30 pm
I did the chefs table on a recent cruise and it was one of the best dining experiences I've ever had. If you're a foodie, it's worth the extra bucks. We made this our excursion for the week.
February 22, 2018 at 1:27 am
How much was it extra?
June 07, 2015 at 9:27 am
Thank you for the tips. Never knew about the carry on wine.
August 05, 2015 at 4:31 pm
If you take wine, don't forget to pack a corkscrew. I had to call room service to open mine. Cost a $3.00 tip.

Its worth the Chef Table if you have kiddos? How much it is? Thanks in adva
July 10, 2015 at 10:46 am
I did the chef's table on the Carnival Pride and it was the highlight of the cruise. Absolutely fantastic. One of the couple was from Washington DC; they are total foods and eat at the highest of high end restaurants. They said the meal was on par with those they had paid well over $200 per person for. So not only was it fantastic, it was a bargain if you are a foodie.
As for kids, it depends on the kid. Young kids, probably not. Teens, perhaps, if they are foodies. My kids are teens and would have loved it, but my wife and I wanted a date. They ae huge fans of Q-sine on Celebrity.

We have reservations for the Captain's dinner on our upcoming cruise in December. We were told by Carnival representatives that we had to wait until we were on board but it turns out that you can email customer service and they will make reservations for you that you have to pay for when you board.
You can get espresso and cappuccino in the dining room after dinner without an additional charge. Some ships have cooking demonstrations as well where samples are given out. Great fun for all to watch and to snack.
Also, Carnival upgraded their "Cheers" program. Now you have an option for a drink pass @ about 50.00 a day and yes, you have to pay for the entire number of days for your cruise. Limits are the same. No sharing. You also have the option for Cruise Bar Cash where you can pay way ahead of time and the credit is there when you board. The caveat is that you can only use the Bar Cash on items from the bar including drinks, sodas & coffees. You can NOT use it at the Liquor store or to buy anything else. AND if you don't use it all, you do NOT get a refund. I'm the only one who imbibes about 1-2 drinks a day so I've already bought what I will need. You just go to the Shop area on Carnival and there it is. Makes a great gift to give and to receive.
A new thing for us this year is that you can no longer bring bottled drinks on board. You can bring 12 cans of canned drinks on board per person. Which we will most likely do. However, Carnival is selling the water pretty cheap if you order and pay before your cruise. I forget but it's like $2.25 for 6 or 12.
Speaking of Cruise Cash, I just want to mention that you can also do photo and general where you can spend it on anything you want. $500 limit for each type.

" Carnival upgraded their “Cheers” program. Now you have an option for a drink pass @ about 50.00 a day" - can you explain how this works. I have a cruise in Feb. and would like to know the new "Cheers" program instead of paying $344.66/person for a week. Thanks!!

We are going on a panama cruise in March, anything we should know or land tours we should take
February 17, 2016 at 6:35 pm
The "Cheers" package is still $50 pppd but every person in your room must also get that package. My girlfriends just booked a Bahamas trip and one doesn't drink so we couldn't get the package because we might share. We will have to pay al la cart.

I always bring a couple of big plastic tumblers and load up on the OJ and Guava breakfast juices and make some in room cocktails in the afternoon.

I'm getting anxiety just reading about all these fees...lol Some sites say your allowed water, others say your not allowed to carry on water? All I want to take is 3 20 oz bottles for my meds... we prepaid our gratuity and pray we do OK at tipping be studing... our trip😣
March 27, 2017 at 10:05 am
Don't worry, Irma— You're going to have a great cruise! I was not allowed to take bottled water on my last cruise by we ordered a case to our cabin and it was REALLY cheap at around $4.50. The best part was not having to carry it on the ship, and it was waiting for us when we arrived in our cabin. Alternatively, there is free filtered water on the Lido deck. We drink this and use the bottled water just when we're in our room.

My husband and myself my sister and brother in law are going on carnival legend tour Hawaii to Sydney in October and we were told we could not buy a drink package is this true

I was told we could not buy a drinks package is this true
February 19, 2018 at 3:49 pm
I wanted to do the cheer drink package but it says I would have to buy it also for my husband to. Only problem is he doesn’t drink alcohol, so it would be a waste of money $$. I was hoping to get him the pop package and myself the cheer package. On Norwegian Cruise we were able to do it. And rules are you can only get one drink each time so why can’t you get just one each of the packages., so disappointed. Otherwise we have a Awesome this is our 5 cruise.

The Ultimate Menu Guide to Carnival’s Main Dining Room
Doug Parker
- March 12, 2019
- 6.0K shares
The main dining rooms on Carnival Cruise Line’s ships are a staple for guests. They add to the overall cruise experience, as cruisers generally value food and service.
Carnival’s dining rooms consist of varied menus and experienced and attentive staff. Having dinner in the main dining room (otherwise known as MDR to the seasoned cruiser) is a three-course affair.
Should you choose not to eat in the main dining room, you’ll also have plenty of other options, free or for fee, around the ship, as various dining venues are available. In other words, you will not be hungry during your sea vacation.
This menu guide to Carnival’s Main Dining Room will provide insightful information about where to dine, what dishes to eat, and an overview of the cruise line’s main dining rooms!
Where it’s located
Carnival offers both Set-Time Dining and Time Dining, which gives guests more flexibility, making it an excellent option for those who don’t necessarily want to be on a set schedule.
READ MORE: 31 Carnival Main Dining Room Tips
Most Carnival ships have two dining rooms, but although the Spirit-class ships ( Carnival Pride , Carnival Spirit , Carnival Legend , and Carnival Miracle ) have only one dining room, they still offer traditional Set-Time and Your Time Dining options.
Carnival’s signature “Sea Day Brunch” is also served in one of the main dining rooms. Because of its popularity, it’s typically served in the larger dining room, which is located in the aft (back).
What to Expect in the Main Dining Room
Now and then, Carnival tinkers with the menus. O ne thing’s for sure, though: any change, no matter how small, will surely be appreciated by guests.
Given that Carnival ensures that people have a great experience, they take the feedback they receive on changes very seriously.
Currently, the Carnival fleet offers two separate menus: the American Table menu and the American Feast menu.
- American Table : This is your typical main dining room menu with a selection of appetizers, soups, salads, entrees, and desserts. This is the rotating menu you’ll find each cruise night, except on formal nights.
- American Feast : This is the menu offered in the main dining room on formal nights, and it’s not all that different from the American Table menu. This menu will be provided once or twice per cruise, depending on the length of your sailing. Formal nights are also the only evenings in which tablecloths are used in the main dining rooms.

The experience usually takes 90 or so minutes. If you are crunched for time, you should consider eating dinner at the Lido deck buffet or another venue offering a more casual experience.
Dining times
Carnival offers two different dining programs, and you’ll generally select one when you book your cruise. Traditional Dining, which allows you to eat at the same table with the same people at the same time each night, is generally served at 6 p.m. and 8:15 p.m.
Your Time dining lets you decide what time you’d like to eat. But be aware that because Your Time dining is in demand, you must request this option as soon as possible.
If you find it unavailable on your sailing, recheck it once you’re on board to see if there are openings.
In 2020, Carnival moved on its HUB app to allow guests to check in for Your Time dining and receive an alert when the table is ready. This avoids the long lines at the entrance of the dining room.
- Pros and Cons of Traditional Dining vs. Your Time Dining
What should I wear?
Carnival breaks dinner up into two evenings: cruise casual and cruise elegant.
Carnival’s website says the main dining room does not permit cut-off jeans, men’s sleeveless shirts, tee shirts, gym or basketball shorts, baseball hats, flip-flops, or bathing suit attire.
For men, they may wear khakis, collared shirts, and dress slacks suits in the main dining room. Tuxedos, a sports coat, and a tie are not required. However, cruise elegance is a great photo opportunity, and you can dress as fancy as you’d like.
Carnival also lists jeans forbidden for elegant evenings, but in our experience, they tend to look the other way as long as the jeans are excellent. You can read their dining room dress code policy here .
Summer dresses, blouses, casual dresses, pantsuits, and capris are all acceptable for casual cruise nights.
Carnival Main Dining Room menu explained
The menu in the main dining room is pretty straightforward, but it can be overwhelming, given all the options available.
Since we know a lot of people want to know at least the basics of what will be available, we thought it might be helpful to take a look at both the American Table and American Feast offerings and break down the menus.
Keep in mind that selections change periodically, so what you’ll find below is more an example of what you’ll discover than a written-in-stone guide.
If you’re the type of person who loves kicking things off with an appetizer (or three), Carnival’s menus have you covered. Generally speaking, you’ll find about 10 different options in Carnival, with the always-popular shrimp cocktail available every night.
Some of the other tasty treats they offer to start your meal include:
- Fried Calamari
- Chilled Vietnamese Roll
- Strawberry Bisque
- Smoked Chicken Quesadillas with salsa
- Smoked Poblano and Corn Soup
- A variety of salads
Dishes to try
While this is one of our favorite menu sections, it’s not for everyone. However, what you’ll find here are items that, as the name suggests, aren’t exactly everyday fare.
Found just beneath the appetizers, you never know precisely what you’ll discover. But for folks who are open to trying something new, this is a tasty option.
Some items you will find on this menu are:
- Blood Sausage
- Escargot (snails)
- Alligator Tail
- BBQ Pulled Wild Boar
- Philadephia Pepper Pot (with Honeycomb Tripe)
- Braised Frog Legs

Nightly entree menu
When it comes to entrees, you’ll find plenty of options from both land and sea. The portion sizes are generous, but don’t be shy if you want to order two entrees.
As with every menu section, you can order as much as you like. If there’s one department in which the menus might be lacking, it’s the vegetarian options.
Some of the entrees you’ll find on the menu include:
- Veal Parmesan
- Pan-Seared Tilapia
- Rosemary Lamb Shank
- Southern Fried Chicken
- Salmon Cakes
- Crisp Portobello Mushrooms
- A Featured Indian Vegetarian dish (lentils, basmati rice, papadam, and raita)
If you want prime rib and lobster, you’ll find them on the American Feast menu. So yes, you’ll have to dress up if you wish to have your lobster!
From the grill menu
If none of the regularly listed entrees appeal to you on any given night, give this section a look. It offers some great selections and a bit of variety with the two main items — the beef and fish selections — usually changing daily.
Like the other menu sections we’ve discussed, these are complimentary. People sometimes confuse these for the upcharge items, which we’ll discuss a little bit later on.
Here are some menu items you’ll find on the From The Grill menu:
- Salmon Filet: Citrus and pepper rubbed salmon served with broccoli, carrots, and red potatoes
- Flat Iron Steak: Cooked with herbs and peppers, served with broccoli and baked potato
- Chicken Breast: Roasted with garlic and herbs, served with peas and carrots with red potatoes
- Pork Chop: Cooked with caramelized onions and served with stewed apples and mashed potatoes
The beef dish comes with a selection of BBQ Sauce, Béarnaise, Peppercorn, or Wild Mushroom sauce.
Side dishes
Every night, you’ll find six sides offered at the bottom of the main dining room menu. These are served in addition to whatever sides you have with your meal.
They’re individual-sized, not family-style. So, if you’re the kind of person who likes a whole lot of creamed spinach with your beef, make it a double order.
The selections can vary nightly, but they typically include items such as these:
- Baked Potato
- Broccoli, Carrots, and Onions
- Mac n’ Cheese with Bacon
- French Fries
- Ratatouille
- Creamed Spinach
Port of call menu
The port menus are unique to every destination. This can be found in the regular menu, which gives you information about the port of call. Some days, this section will feature a specific port, depending on your itinerary and sea days.
Sample Port of Call Menus
- Download a sample St. Maarten Port of Call Menu
- Download a sample Eastern Caribbean Port of Call Menu
Here’s an example of what you might find on the port of call menu.
Port: St. Maarten
The whole island is known for its excellent cuisine, partly due to its French influences. Creole, French, and West Indian cooking are particularly renowned. Many other nationalities have influenced the fare of St. Maarten because of its heavily diverse roots.
- Featured Drink: Island Martini. A refreshing mix of Bacardi Limon, Pineapple, and Orange Juices, and a touch of Grenadine. $9.50
- Featured Appetizer: Caribbean Bouillabaisse. Local Fish and Seafood in a Saffron Broth with Tomato, Fennel, and Sauce Rouille.
- Featured Entree: Coq au vin. Chicken Marinated and Cooked in Red Burgundy Wine with Mushrooms, Silver Onions, and Bacon, Finished with some aged Brandy.
Steakhouse Selection
The Steakhouse Selection is available for a $20 upcharge and offers guests a chance to get a cut of beef served in the steakhouse while in the main dining room. The steakhouse selections are available across all of their cruise ships.
Featured items here generally include:
- Broiled Maine Lobster Tail served with drawn butter
- Surf & Turf, Maine Lobster Tail with Grilled Filet Mignon
- Filet Mignon, 9 oz premium aged beef
- New York Strip Loin Steak, 14-oz
Dessert menu
The main dining room’s dessert menu consists of three selections rotating every night. One of the selections offered each night is usually a low-cal, no-sugar treat. There are also coffees and teas available to complement your dessert.
Sample dessert menu
- Download a sample dessert menu
Some examples of desserts you might find on the menu are:
- Boston Cream Cake
- Orange and Almond Baked Cake
- Chocolate and Cheese Brownie
- Carnival Melting Chocolate Cake
- Fresh Tropical Fruit Plate
- Cheese Plate
- Selection of Ice Creams
Not too long ago, Carnival brought Baked Alaska back to their ships. It’s typically served on the final night of the cruise. And if a banana split is more your speed, ask to see a kid’s menu.
For an added cost, you’ll find a selection of dessert drinks listed at the bottom of the menu, along with cappuccinos, lattes, espressos, and the “Art of Tea” selection.

The policy allows guests to bring one 750ml bottle of wine or champagne per person, aged 21 years or older, in their carry-on luggage. Additionally, guests are permitted to bring a 12-pack of non-alcoholic beverages, such as canned sodas or bottled water, per person. In summary, understanding Carnival Cruise’s carry-on beverage policy is essential for any traveler planning to embark on a cruise with the company. By being aware of the restrictions, guidelines, and exceptions, passengers can ensure a smooth and hassle-free experience while enjoying their favorite libations on board.
First and foremost, it is important to note that Carnival Cruise has specific regulations regarding the quantities and types of beverages that are allowed to be brought on board. According to the company’s policy, each passenger aged 21 years or older is permitted to bring one bottle of wine or champagne (750ml) per person. Additionally, non-alcoholic beverages such as canned or bottled sodas, juice boxes, water, and other non-alcoholic drinks in sealed containers are also allowed.
It is crucial to remember that any alcoholic beverages must be carried on in a carry-on bag and not in checked luggage. Carnival Cruise strictly prohibits the transportation of alcoholic beverages in checked bags due to safety concerns and the potential for damage. Therefore, passengers should ensure that their carry-on bags comply with the cruise line’s size and weight restrictions.
For those who wish to bring more than the allotted one bottle of wine or champagne, Carnival Cruise offers an interesting option known as the “Cruise the Vineyards” program. This program allows passengers to purchase additional bottles of wine or champagne at competitive prices and have them delivered directly to their staterooms. This option provides a convenient way to enjoy a broader selection of beverages while still adhering to the company’s policy.
Moreover, it is worth mentioning that Carnival Cruise also offers a wide range of onboard beverage packages for those who prefer an all-inclusive experience. These packages allow passengers to enjoy unlimited alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages throughout their cruise for a fixed daily rate. By purchasing one of these packages, travelers can indulge in a variety of libations without worrying about exceeding their carry-on limits.
It is crucial to note that the Carnival Cruise carry-on beverage policy may vary depending on the specific cruise ship and itinerary. Therefore, it is always recommended to review the policy on the official Carnival Cruise website or consult with a cruise specialist to ensure accurate and up-to-date information.
In conclusion, understanding Carnival Cruise’s carry-on beverage policy is crucial for passengers who want to bring their favorite beverages on board. By adhering to the guidelines and restrictions, travelers can enjoy their preferred libations while maintaining a safe and enjoyable cruise experience. Remember to review the policy on Carnival Cruise’s official website or seek advice from a cruise specialist for the most accurate and up-to-date information. Happy cruising!

Carnival Cruise Line shares strict drink rule some may not like
C ruise lines sort of get to pick and choose the rules they follow based on where they sail. In most cases, if they sail out of North American ports, they abide by U.S. law but that's not universally true.
MSC Cruises, for example, does not provide Internal Revenue Service (IRS) tax forms when they hit a jackpot bigger than $1,199 in its casinos. Technically, if the winner is a U.S. citizen, they still owe taxes on their winnings, they just don't get a 1099 telling the IRS about their win.
Related: Royal Caribbean cuts back a popular loyalty program benefit
Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Virgin Voyages, and other cruise lines do use that form which can lead to a slow collection process when a passenger hits a jackpot. Cruise ship casinos also use 18 as their gambling age even though most U.S. casinos, but not all, have 21 as the minimum age.
All the major cruise lines that sail out of the U.S. also use 21 as the legal age to drink alcohol on their ships. That rule does not change when the ship stops in a port where the drinking age is younger.
That means that, in some ports, 18-20-year-olds can legally drink, but not once they get back on the ship. The cruise line's brand ambassador John Heald recently shared some key news about its alcohol policies on its website.
Carnival makes its alcohol rules clear
Carnival has an onboard drinking age of 21 and Heald recently made it clear that there were no exceptions to that. He shared a message he got from a customer he did not name.
"We are taking a cruise with our 19-year-old daughter and her 18-year-old girlfriend. I was told that Carnival Cruises has a Young Adult Alcoholic Beverage Waiver form available at the Guest Services Desk for parents to sign to allow their 20-year-olds to drink on the Panorama. I called Carnival and was told the form was not available on they were sketchy about if this could be done or not. Can it and if not why not because my daughter and partner are not children?" the upcoming passenger asked.
Heald was playful and direct in his answer.
"Well then, it's certainly not my place to judge how other parents, ummmm, parent. However, I find it a wee bit strange that a parent would ask for this," he shared. "...We don't have a waiver and will not be allowing these ladies to be served alcohol. I have written to the guest and explained this. Her response to me was disappointing, to say the least."
Carnival does have good news for 18-20-year-olds
While Heald made it clear that Carnival ( CCL ) does not allow underage drinking on its ships, it has taken steps to make it easer for passengers 18-20 years old to meet.
"So, this morning I want to talk about 18-20-year-olds and first some good news. Following some of you writing to me here saying there should be a meet and greet and a chance for this age group to meet new friends I am happy to tell you that there now is," he wrote.
This move follows Royal Caribbean, which created its Hyperlink group to help passengers in that age group meet. The Carnival program does not include events, just a meetup, while Royal's has regularly scheduled programming for the group.
Heald explained how the Carnival program will work.

"On every ship on the first seaday (not embarkation day), there will be a meet and greet under the supervision of one of the brilliant Fun Squad members. They will meet and hopefully enjoy a chance to meet new friends, follow each other on Insta and Tit Tock, and enjoy the cruise with people of their own age. Check the Hubb app or the paper copy of the Funtimes for information," he added.
