The 2023/24 snooker season is starting to crank into life and Judd Trump will head to the European Masters in Germany with a spring in his step after securing victory in a Chinese Billiards and Snooker Association (CBSA) event in Huangguoshu. The 2019 world champion got the better of John Higgins in the final. Trump and co. will be back in China for the Shanghai Masters in September.

Cazoo World Snooker Championship 2023 - Day Nine

Some of the biggest names in snooker are heading to Huangguoshu in China for a new event this week run by the Chinese Billiards and Snooker Association (CBSA).

There was plenty of interest as a poster emerged on social media advertising the event in Huangguoshu running from 1-5 August and featuring a number of recognisable faces.

John Higgins, Judd Trump, Stephen Hendry , Jack Lisowski, Mark Allen and Kyren Wilson were among those featured, with Ryan Day also confirmed to play, making the new tournament a pretty stellar one.

The event run by the CBSA is much like the Haining Open, which has been run by the same organisation since 2016 and has featured World Snooker Tour professionals.

Mark Selby won the Haining Open twice, while Matt Selt and Thepchaiya Un-Nooh have also lifted the title.

Worlds Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) chairman Jason Ferguson explains that the partnership with the CBSA allows main tour professionals to compete in the odd event of this kind as part of the CBSA Tour.

‘We have an agreement with the CBSA, a long-standing agreement, and we work together on a number of ranking events plus the Shanghai Masters,’ Ferguson told Metro.co.uk. ‘We co-operate in a number of other areas to do with academies, training, general sports development, pathways to the tour and the CBSA Tour falls within that.

‘There’s one or two events that pop up each year where the CBSA make a request for tour players to play in them and those requests are generally granted. But it’s limited under the agreement, there’s a finite number of events.

‘But we’re very supportive because the CBSA are a long-term strategic partner. They’re not doing these events to break away or create opposing events. They’re doing these events to help us help promote the sport in new areas. It’s all part of a plan.

‘It’s exactly the same as the Haining Open. That has always done quite well.

‘It will be streamed through our existing partners in China. We’ve got exclusive TV agreements in China and it is those agreements that will pick that up.’

Huangguoshu Snooker

The CBSA Tour is a route onto the professional tour, so there was some confusion on the promotional material as to why the term ‘China Professional Snooker Tour’ was included.

Asked whether the CBSA Tour could be considered professional, Ferguson said: ‘Not really. It’s the CBSA Tour and they’re trying to professionalise a couple of those events, but it’s not an independent tour setting up, it’s part of a wider partnership that we’ve got.’

The event fits in a gap in the WST calendar between the European Masters qualifiers and the British Open qualifying stages.

The tournament will feature 64 players in total, played in Huangguoshu, famed for its giant waterfall as the promoters look to develop snooker in the area.

The tournament is chiefly for CBSA Tour players with a handful of invitations to main tour players and is not comparable to the unsanctioned Macau Masters taking place in December.

Judd Trump advances to last 16 in CBSA Tour event

Judd Trump beat Ma Hailong 4-0 to reach the last 16 of the CBSA Tour event in Huangguoshu, Guizhou on Thursday.

The Englishman hasn’t lost a frame yet in the tournament, which is sanctioned by the Chinese Billiards and Snooker Association.

Trump opened up the competition with a whitewash victory over up-and-coming women’s star Bai Yulu before repeating the trick against main tour rookie Ma.

The 33 year-old will face Zhang Anda in the third round on Friday after the latter overcame Wang Zepeng 4-2.

The 64-field CBSA Tour event features China’s highest ranked amateurs, some qualified players, and a group of marquee invites including Trump.

Indeed, five of the eight high-profile international players invited from the World Snooker Tour still remain in the event.

Mark Allen, Kyren Wilson, Mark Williams, and John Higgins are also in contention for the top prize.

Allen and Higgins recorded 4-1 triumphs over Yao Dongcheng and Jin Long respectively on day three, while Wilson thumped Li Yan without losing a frame.

Williams had the toughest test but emerged as a 4-2 winner against Gao Yang, who dropped off the professional main tour in 2022.

There were defeats, however, for Jack Lisowski and Stephen Hendry .

The former went down unexpectedly in a 4-2 reverse against Tu Xuan in the second round, while Hendry lost 4-0 to Cai Jianzhong.

Among the familiar players from China still in contention are Xiao Guodong, Yuan Sijun, and Cao Yupeng.

Xiao has arguably had the most difficult draw of anybody so far – dispatching Ryan Day in a decider before bageling countryman Zhou Yuelong.

Yuan’s 4-0 success over Luo Zetao was his second of the week and included a break of 132, the highest of the tournament so far.

Cao, meanwhile, earned a 4-2 victory over Liu Hongyu.

The CBSA Tour event near Huangguoshu Waterfall runs until Saturday, when the champion will receive 200,000CNY (about £22,000).

Hendry’s loss was pretty bad. This week was an ideal chance for him to win a few matches. Cai Jianzhong won the Chinese National Championship many years ago, but now rarely plays and spends most of his time coaching academy kids. Stephen Hendry was probably his boyhood idol!

This tournament has been very enjoyable, and is exactly the kind of event I’ve been calling for, worldwide. It takes snooker to new places, showcases some big names, is viable with the limited capacity, and gives an opportunity to many local players. Unfortunately, WST are not generally supportive of Pro-Ams, and of course they aren’t able to give it ‘ranking’ status. But there is a special deal with the CBSA, and it’s also a useful test-bed for WST tournaments returning to China. But if things were different, we could see similar (or slightly smaller) events in the US, India, Thailand, Europe, Africa, Middle-East – any potential growth regions for snooker.

' src=

Pro-ams definitely shouldn’t have ranking status. The centuries made don’t even count to the player’s official tallies.

I agree pro-ams work well to generate interest but it would be better served in a market that we’ve yet to see much growth in. The pandemic showed World Snooker are too reliant on the British and Chinese markets.

I thought we did count invitational tournaments, like the Masters, for things like century breaks? Anyway, the criterion should be ‘professional’ vs. ‘non-professional’. Huangguoshu was a Pro-Am, as you said. If a tournament counts towards rankings, it would attract more entrants, something we definitely need at Am and Pro-Am level.

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

  • Atlant @ Ufa, Friday Apr 8 (3:00 PM CET/10:00 PM EST)
  • Atlant @ Ufa, Sunday Apr 10 (1:00 PM CET/8:00 AM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Tuesday Apr 12 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Thursday Apr 14 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)

Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.

2024/25 World Snooker Tour Cards

21st February 2024

The WPBSA and WST have today jointly confirmed the provisional tour card structure for the 2024/25 World Snooker Tour.

Retained Places

As in previous seasons, the top 64 players on the official world ranking list following the 2024 Cazoo World Championship will remain on tour.

They will be joined by up to 31 players who are currently on the first year of a two-year tour card, as well as the top four players on the one-year ranking list, not already qualified.

cbsa china tour snooker

Qualification Pathways

The tour will be completed by players who successfully qualify through recognised tour qualification pathways that reflect the continued growth of snooker around the globe.

These once again include Q School UK/Europe and Q School Asia-Oceania, where a total of twelve two-year tour cards will be on offer.

Two places were recently won at the World Snooker Federation (WSF) Championships, snooker’s most prestigious international amateur championships, in Albania earlier this month. Ka Wai Cheung of Hong Kong China claimed a dominant victory in the final of the mixed gender WSF Championship to secure his place, while 17-year-old Bulcsú Révész claimed victory in the WSF Junior Championship to become Hungary’s first ever professional player.

cbsa china tour snooker

Snooker’s premier amateur tour, the newly-expanded WPBSA Q Tour Global will carry four places – one to the number one ranked player in UK/Europe, already confirmed as Michael Holt, while three more will be up for grabs at the Global Play-Off to be held in Bosnia and Herzegovina in March.

The World Women’s Snooker (WWS) Tour , which was established as an official tour qualification pathway in 2021, will again offer two places – one to the Women’s World Championship winner and another to the highest-ranked player not on the World Snooker Tour. Should either Reanne Evans or Baipat Siripaporn win the world title again in March, the second card will also go to the next highest ranked player on the WWS ranking list.

The final places will be claimed by recognised regional qualifiers from Europe, the Americas, Africa and the Asia-Pacific regions, in addition to the CBSA China Tour.

cbsa china tour snooker

Jason Ferguson, WPBSA Chairman said: “We are pleased to confirm the minimum guaranteed World Snooker Tour structure for the 2024/25 season.

“We now have a robust and established Tour qualification structure which provides opportunities for aspiring amateur players around the world to earn their professional places, as well as current players the chance to retain their spots.

“The continued growth of the WPBSA Q Tour Global – which this season has seen its number of Tour places double to four – is a significant step, with the relaunched Global Playoff in Bosnia and Herzegovina set to include players from the UK/Europe, Americas, Middle East and Asia-Pacific regions for the first time.

“Together with the two places won at the WSF Championships, the biggest competition in amateur snooker globally, earlier this month, our commitment to our network of global partners and our international qualification structure is clear and will only continue to strengthen in future seasons.”

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

cbsa china tour snooker

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

cbsa china tour snooker

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

cbsa china tour snooker

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

cbsa china tour snooker

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

cbsa china tour snooker

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

cbsa china tour snooker

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

cbsa china tour snooker

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
