PGA Tour Champions to resume late-July with 13 events in 15 weeks

The PGA Tour Champions is set for 2023 and record money will be awarded.

On Tuesday, the tour released its full schedule and a record $66 million will be up for grabs in purse money across 28 events. That’s up $4 million from 2022.

The tour will make three stops overseas, including the second event of the year, the Trophy Hassan II, which will be played in Morocco.

The one new tournament on next year’s schedule, the Galleri Classic, will be played at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California. That venue notably held the LPGA’s first major of the year, the Chevron Championship, however, next year, the event will move to Houston. It’s the first time the PGA Tour Champions will play at Mission Hills since 1993.

2024 Memorial Tournament purse, prize money: Payouts from $20M pool as Scottie Scheffler sets money record

Another significant paycheck was on the line at muirfield village.

memorial-tournament-trophy-g.jpg

The PGA Tour's seventh signature event of the season is in its final round as the 2024 Memorial Tournament takes center stage at Muirfield Village. While the Memorial marks one of the last big-money tournaments on the PGA Tour schedule, it also kicks off a highly lucrative three-week stretch in professional golf.

A combined $60 million will be up for grabs between the Memorial, the U.S. Open and Travelers Championship -- two signature events surrounding the third major of the season -- over the next three weeks. Muirfield Village ultimately welcomed 73 players this week, and it was once again Scottie Scheffler that claimed victory at a significant tournament and brought home a massive check to go with it.

Scheffler, back in form after a couple recent hiccups, won for the fifth time in his last eight events . Those five wins are the most in a single season for any PGA Tour golfer since 2017 (Justin Thomas), and given what remains on the calendar, Scheffler now has an opportunity to join the rare eight-win club.

What he has already accomplished, though, is setting a new PGA Tour earnings record for a single season. Collecting $4 million for winning the Memorial, Scheffler has now claimed over $24 million this season -- $3 million beyond what he earned in 2023 when he last set the PGA Tour earnings record.

The $4 million paid out to Scheffler matched the sum up for grabs at the Genesis Invitational and Arnold Palmer Invitational on the PGA Tour calendar. And if Scheffler remains on a heater, he could clean up close to eight figures over the next couple of weeks.

Those inside the top 11 all cleared $500,000, while every player inside the top 21 made more than $250,000 with those inside the top 50 bringing home at least $52,000.

Let's take a look at the payout list for the 2024 Memorial Tournament.

Money Matters

U.S. Open 2024: The USGA is bumping up the prize money payout to another major-championship record. But the reason why is different than you'd think

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2024/6/us-open-2024-flags-signage.jpg

Mike Ehrmann

PINEHURST, N.C. — USGA CEO Mike Whan, speaking in front of the media on Wednesday at Pinehurst No. 2, took a moment to reminisce about how the first edition of the U.S. Open, held in 1895, was four nine-hole rounds played in one day between 11 competitors with the winner earning $150.

Not long after, in the midst of revealing that the 2024 U.S. Open would be the richest men’s major championship in golf history, Whan noted that the 156 golfers in this year’s field “won't be playing for $150 like 130 years ago.”

Indeed, the winner on Sunday of the 2024 will collect a record $4.3 million from a purse of $21.5 million, the largest offered in a men’s major and second only to the $25 million given at the Players Championship.

The new U.S. Open prize money payout is a healthy $1.5 million bump from what was handed out in 2023 at Los Angeles Country Club. More notably, it’s $9 million more than was given out just three years ago at Torrey Pines. It’s a function of the times, the LIV Golf League offering $20 million purses that have been matched by the PGA Tour’s signature events, with the majors also following suit.

That said, Whan’s explanation for the increase was notable for what it means in the context of what the USGA is trying to do overall in elevating its biggest championship.

“We want to make sure that our purse matches how we feel about the rest of our championship, which is a life-changing difference in the game,” Whan said. “And I think we’re there and we’ll continue to kind of monitor that.”

Here’s how the U.S. Open prize money payout compares to the other men’s majors:

Masters: $20 million PGA Championship: $18.5 million Open Championship: $16.5 million (2023)

Suffice it to say, the exponential growth in the U.S. Open prize money payout is best understood when looking at it in context to years past. Here’s how the winner’s payday has grown since World War II:

1950: Ben Hogan at Merion, $4,000 1960: Arnold Palmer at Cherry Hills, $14,400 1973: Johnny Miller at Oakmont, $35,000 1980: Jack Nicklaus at Baltusrol, $55,000 1982: Tom Watson at Pebble Beach, $60,000 1992: Tom Kite at Pebble Beach, $275,000 2000: Tiger Woods at Pebble Beach, $800,000 2008: Tiger Woods at Torrey Pines, $1.35 million 2011: Rory McIlroy at Congressional, $1.44 million 2015: Jordan Spieth at Chambers Bay, $1.8 million 2017: Brooks Koepka at Erin Hills, $2.16 million 2021: Jon Rahm at Torrey Pines, $2.25 million 2022: Matt Fitzpatrick at The Country Club, $3.15 million 2023: Wyndham Clark at LACC, $3.6 million

“We’re proud of our purse,” Whan said. “I’m proud of the fact that we as an organization consistently ask ourselves whether or not we think we’ve got out purse right, our TV right. All of those things have changed quite a bit in the last few years, and change is uncomfortable, but I think we're not only keeping up with the times, but hopefully at least in the landscape of majors, in a lot of these cases we're leading. You guys can decide if you think that's right or wrong, but that's how we think about it.”

Scottie Scheffler’s bank account swelled by another $4 million on Sunday with his fifth victory of the season .

The world No. 1 closed in 74 at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, for a one-stroke victory at the Memorial. Scheffler’s season earnings climbed to $24 million and change, which is more than double the winnings of Xander Schauffele, the No. 2 player on the money list.

Runner-up Collin Morikawa and Ben An became the ninth and 10 th players this season to cross $5 million in earnings.

Scheffler set the Tour’s record for most Official Money in a single season with $24,024,552. It marked the third consecutive season that he’s set the record for most Official Money ($14,046,910 in 2021-22; $21,014,342 in 2022-23).

Here’s a closer look at how much each player who made the cut in the 73-man field earned from a purse of $20 million.

2024 U.S. Open sleeper picks to watch: Who might break out at Pinehurst

  • Follow on Twitter

Harry Higgs late last month at the Visit Knoxville Open.

Getty Images

He won three weeks ago.

And two weeks ago.

And he survived last Monday, in a seven-for-two playoff for a berth in this week’s U.S. Open.

But here’s the very, very best part about Harry Higgs , should you be looking to invest ahead of the festivities at Pinehurst No. 2 :

He’s currently around 350-1 to win.

Interesting, right?

Of course, the victories have come on the Korn Ferry Tour. And before that, he hadn’t won on any PGA Tour level since July of 2019, also on the Korn Ferry. His latest success may also just be a blip.

Or it could be something more. At the least, Higgs’ momentum is unquestioned.

“If I prepare as I know I should and I’m nice to myself,” Higgs said two weeks ago, “I can do some great things on this tour [the Korn Ferry] and I believe I can do some great things on the PGA Tour as well.”

With that, let’s continue to dig. Below, members of our staff have each made a long-shot selection to assist you with your own weekly picks , whether those are for a low-stakes office fantasy league, or (legal!) big-bucks bets with a sportsbook. It’s an enjoyable endeavor for us. Deploy it as you wish.

On to our analysis.

2024 U.S. Open sleeper picks to watch

PGA Tour golfers aren't the only ones who can make some 💰 starting next Thursday. You can too! Here are a few tips. https://t.co/uldLYRZvRh — Nick Piastowski (@nickpia) June 5, 2020

Ryan Barath

Sleeper pick: Zac Blair, +40,000. Blair has been playing pretty well recently and got into the field through sectionals. He’s not an overly long player, but Pinehurst will be playing firm and fast, and every player is going to miss a lot of greens, meaning his WAY above-average chipping and putting could help him around No. 2.

Alan Bastable

Sleeper pick: Lucas Glover, +15,000. Don’t let Glover’s U.S. Open record (11 MCs — and a  win! — in 15 starts) scare you off. He’s quietly having a steady year (just two MCs) and remains among the Tour’s best ball-strikers. Hitting greens at No. 2 is essential and that’s what Glover does best.

Adam Christensen

Sleeper pick: Aaron Rai, +15,000. The double gloves he uses for extra grip will be an advantage in the humid Southern climate, giving him a slight leg up on the competition. He’s also extremely accurate off the tee and above average in approaches and around the greens. If he can magically conjure up a good putting week, maybe he can pull off a miracle.

James Colgan

Sleeper pick: Peter Malnati, +40,000: The last time a major came to Pinehurst, Martin Kaymer won by putting EVERYTHING around those mightly turtleback greens. Malnati ranks near the top on Tour in nearly every putting statistic, and at his odds, I’ve seen worse values.

Nick Dimengo

Sleeper pick: Keegan Bradley, +8,000. It’s Keegan time. Not only is he slowly rediscovering his form — coming off a T2 finish at the Charles Schwab Challenge in May — but something just feels right about picking Bradley to win his second career major right now. Maybe it’s still the “Full Swing” effect where I’ve got a soft spot for him, but, more than anything, I like the fact that he finished T4 here a decade ago. I’m laying down the money for him to win and enthusiastically looking forward to watching him go to work.

Connor Federico

Sleeper pick: Phil Mickelson, +25,000. Lefty’s 54th birthday just so happens to fall on U.S. Open Sunday this year. If the oldest man to ever win a major is ever going to make another run at one, why not at Pinehurst, one of the most notorious short-game tests in all of golf? If Mickelson, after his past few embattled years, could finish off the career grand slam on his birthday and Father’s Day, it would go down as one of the greatest stories in the history of the sport.

Viktor Hovland and caddie Shay Knight at the Puerto Rico Open in February.

How often favorites win tournaments (and when to bet on them)

Sleeper pick: Sahith Theegala, +4500. Sahith Theegala may only have one PGA Tour win, but he’s playing like someone who should be among the favorites every week. He was right there at the PGA Championship until a Sunday 73 took him out of contention. He has five top-10s and all in the biggest events of the year. You say his wildness off the tee makes him a liability at a U.S. Open, I say his creativity makes him a perfect dark horse candidate.

Jessica Marksbury

Sleeper pick: Justin Rose, +8,000. Quite a nice price for a former U.S. Open champ, who also showed some fine form at the PGA Championship with a T6 finish.

Zephyr Melton

Sleeper pick: Nick Dunlap, +30,000. Last summer, Dunlap had a little bit of success at Pinehurst as he won the North-South Amateur. This year, he returns to the Carolina Sand Hills a PGA Tour winner. Why not throw down a little cash on the long shot?

Nick Piastowski

Sleeper pick: Akshay Bhatia, +15,000. I’m a sucker for story lines. But Bhatia grew up near nearby Raleigh, where good friend Grayson Murray also grew up. I’d also like to use this space to toss out Harry Higgs, who’s hotter than anyone and is listed around 350-1.

Sleeper pick: Tiger Woods, +15,000. Of course, he’s not the force he once was. But he’s still Tiger Freakin’ Woods, listed on your betting board at 150-1.

Sean Zak

Sleeper pick: Alex Noren, +8,000. People have been sleeping on Noren all year long. He may not win at Pinehurst, but he’d be a very juicy top-10 bet.

Josh Berhow

Sleeper pick: Tom Hoge, +15,000. He hits a lot of greens and is one of the best putters on Tour from mid-range distance. I give him the slight edge over my backup sleeper pick, Corey Conners.

Former Oregon Duck Golfer Wyndham Clark Defends U.S. Open Championship Title

Former Oregon Duck Golfer Wyndham Clark has his eyes set on a second U.S. Open Championship as play begins Thursday at Pinehurst (North Carolina) No . 2, also known as the heart of championship golf in America. Clark has had his difficulties this season and is looking to regain some momentum for his title defense and the rest of the PGA tour.

There is no question that Clark 's first major victory at the Los Angeles Country Club last year was a significant step toward taking his place among some of the best golfers in the world including Rory Mcllroy . In fact, Clark shot a final round 70 to beat four-time major winner Mcllroy by a single stroke. After the win, he expressed his thoughts on the achievement.

“I feel like I belong on this stage," Clark said. “Even two, three years ago when people didn’t know who I was, I felt like I could still play and compete against the best players in the world. I felt like I’ve shown that this year. I’ve come close. Obviously, everyone sees the person that hoists the trophy, but I’ve been trending in the right direction for a long time now.’’

Jun 18, 2023; Los Angeles, California, USA; Wyndham Clark celebrates with the championship trophy after winning the U.S. Open

This year has been anything but consistent, including missing the cut in the last two events. Clark would be well advised to focus on a bigger picture of the season in which he won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am , was runner-up at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and Players Championship and a third at the RBC Heritage.

Currently, Clark is ranked fourth in the FedEx/Comcast Business Top 10 and fifth overall in the FedEx Cup standings. He is fourth in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR), and third in the PGA Tour money list, trailing only world number one and two, Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele respectively.

Clark clearly understands the importance of the mental aspect of the game. He has collaborated with mental coach Julie Elion and gives her credit for his success which includes two wins last year. Regardless of the recent trouble, Clark is trying to power on with positive thoughts.

“It’s the great thing about golf: There’s always another week," Clark said in a recent interview. “I’ve got to believe that good golf is around the corner. I’ve been kind of bummed as of late with my game. I’m always reminded when I get on these practice tees and hit good shots, I’m still doing a lot of good things in practice, and it makes me feel like I’m not far. It’s just bringing it to competition. I’m hoping it’s this week and it starts a good run of playing good golf the rest of the year.’’

Clark started his collegiate golf career at Oklahoma State before transferring to Oregon for the 2016-2017 season. In that single season , he earned multiple awards including a 2017 Ben Hogan Award Finalist, Pac-12 Player of the Year, All-Pac-12 First Team, 2017 Division I Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year semifinalist and achieved a number one rating on Golfstat.

Clark and his fellow golfers face a tough course in Pinehurst No. 2 . The likely winner is the player who controls his emotions and tames the fast greens found on a U.S. Open course. Clark has the tools to repeat if he can put together four solid rounds of golf... and Oregon Ducks fans will be cheering him on!

PGA TOUR Champions announces 2023 schedule

Tour continues growth, with 2023 prize money at record levels

Change Text Size

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – PGA TOUR Champions announced Tuesday the schedule for its 2023 season, which features 28 events and will conclude at the Charles Schwab Cup Championship in Phoenix, Arizona. The 25-event regular season will welcome one new tournament, The Galleri Classic in Rancho Mirage, California, and players will visit 20 U.S. states and three other countries (Morocco, Wales, Canada). In 2023, players will compete for more than $66 million in total prize money, the highest in PGA TOUR Champions’ 43-season history.

“As we near the end of our tremendous 2022 season, we are excited to share next year’s schedule with the players, partners and fans,” said PGA TOUR Champions president Miller Brady. “The 2023 schedule sees our Tour returning to Morocco with the Trophy Hassan II in Rabat, as well as bringing on a new tournament in The Galleri Classic, played at the historic Mission Hills Country Club. Thanks to the strength of our tournament and title sponsors, the future and stability of PGA TOUR Champions has never been more secure. We are thrilled to have the highest purses in PGA TOUR Champions history and to be able to bring the game of golf to the many wonderful venues on this Tour.”

The 2023 season will tee off with the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai the week of January 16-21 in Ka’upulehu-Kona, Hawaii. In the second week of February, the Tour travels to Morocco for the Trophy Hassan II at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam in Rabat.

The Tour comes back stateside after the trip to Morocco, first going to Naples, Florida for the Chubb Classic followed by a trip to Tucson, Arizona for the Cologuard Classic. Following those is a two-week stint in California, first with the Hoag Classic in Newport Beach, then at a new event, The Galleri Classic, played at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage. The tournament – a partnership between PGA TOUR Champions and GRAIL, LLC – marks the first time PGA TOUR Champions has hosted a tournament in Coachella Valley since 1993.

In April, PGA TOUR Champions hosts back-to-back events in Texas. First is the Invited Celebrity Classic, held at Las Colinas Country Club in Irving, Texas. This tournament matches PGA TOUR Champions players with celebrity golfers, as well as 10 amateur players who earn a spot to play in the event.

The PGA TOUR Champions schedule features five major championships, which begin in May with the Regions Tradition in Birmingham, Alabama, and conclude in July with The Senior Open presented by Rolex in Wales.

The 2023 season will also see a new title sponsor for one of the PGA TOUR Champions major championships, with Kaulig taking over title sponsorship for the event held at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio – now named the Kaulig Companies Championship.

“We are thrilled to welcome Kaulig Companies to the PGA TOUR Champions family,” said Brady. “This title sponsorship is another example of Kaulig Companies’ long-standing commitment and support for the local community. We are grateful for Matt Kaulig and Tim Clepper’s roles in ensuring this event will maintain its position each season as one of the truly special tournaments on our schedule. We are grateful to Bridgestone for its support of this tournament through the years, and we look forward to celebrating their contributions at this year’s event.”

The 25-event regular season will lead into the seventh annual Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs, which begin at the Dominion Energy Charity Classic in Richmond, Virginia, followed by the TimberTech Championship in Boca Raton, Florida. The three-tournament series will conclude at Phoenix Country Club at the Charles Schwab Cup Championship on Sunday, November 12, 2023.

Since 2001, the Charles Schwab Cup has been awarded to the winner of a season-long, points-based competition. Steven Alker, who leads the Charles Schwab Cup standings by 749,960 over Padraig Harrington with two events remaining in the 2022 season, looks to hold off the field for his first-ever Charles Schwab Cup.

Each event in 2023 will be televised nationally on GOLF Channel, the Tour’s exclusive cable-television partner that reaches close to 70 million U.S. households. Three events will have weekend coverage on NBC, including the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship, The Senior Open Championship presented by Rolex and the U.S. Senior Open. PGA TOUR Champions coverage is available in 175+ countries and territories via more than 20 broadcast partners.

During the 2023 season, PGA TOUR Champions will welcome a new rookie class, which is highlighted by eight-time PGA TOUR winner and 2009 Open champion Stewart Cink. Cink, the winner of the 2020 Fortinet Championship and 2021 RBC Heritage, turns 50 on May 21, 2023, and is expected to make his Champions Tour debut in the 2023 season.

“I’m tremendously excited to make my debut on PGA TOUR Champions in 2023,” said Cink. “Playing on the PGA TOUR for so many years has brought me some of my most valued relationships, with many close friends now contending on PGA TOUR Champions. While I look forward to reuniting with all of them, I also love competing and I’ve worked very hard to keep my game at a high level. There are so many great players on PGA TOUR Champions and I’ll be anticipating the chance to tee it up against that fantastic group as I near my 50th birthday in May.”

BREAKING NEWS - The Amundi Evian Championship confirms its ambition to develop women's sport and increases its prize money to $8 million dollars.

Since its creation in 1994, The Amundi Evian Championship, the only major in continental Europe across the men’s and women’s game, has consistently affirmed its ambition to promote the performance of women in sport and to support its development towards parity. This is the direction in which the tournament has long been moving in terms of prize money, thanks to the support of its Sponsors' Club, which includes Amundi, Rolex, Danone and evian®; an initiative shared by all the world's major women's tournaments and supported by the LPGA for several years.

"This latest announcement from Amundi and Evian illustrates their ongoing commitment and passion for empowering the world’s best professional golfers through this championship,” said LPGA Commissioner Mollie Marcoux Samaan. “Since its inception 30 years ago, The Amundi Evian Championship has been a leader in advancing women’s golf and women’s sports on a global stage, providing a marquee platform for our athletes to inspire generations of young girls. We are grateful for this support of our athletes as this great championship continues to grow, delivering one of the most exciting weeks in women’s sports for fans around the world. We can’t wait to tee it up in July."

“It's a beautiful symbol for the tournament's 30th anniversary to announce this significant increase in our prize money,” says Franck Riboud, Chairman of The Amundi Evian Championship. “Since our creation, our ambition has been to develop women's sport and to give ever greater resources to the champions who represent it. Today, thanks to the support of the LPGA and Ladies European Tour, the involvement of our loyal Sponsors Club and the exposure provided by the international media, The Amundi Evian Championship is more than ever part of the very exclusive circle of major women's golf events. It's a source of immense pride for all those who have contributed and continue to contribute to its success.”

Since the championship’s major designation in 2013, the purse has now grown over 146%. The purse has increased $3.5 million since 2021, with a $1 million winner’s share first achieved in 2022. In 2024, majors will now award at least $46.9 million, an over 100% increase in just three years.

The rise to $8 million means a prize money of $1.2 million for the winner, and another step towards parity in world sport.
