Our expedition team aboard

So, what does the expedition team actually do? Well, if you’re not familiar with the term, an expedition team is a group of adventurers and educators in the region. They have decades of knowledge that they just can’t wait to share! Hand-picked by us, they are experts in the Chilean Fjords and Antarctica and offer superb insights and information on your destination. All our expedition teams are well-versed in the conservation and ecology of the area and, in the case of the Chilean Fjords and Antarctica, are aware of current IAATO guidelines.

We try to make sure that we cover every kind of question with our expedition team, so we make sure to have every kind of discipline on board. These can range from ornithologists, marine biologists, photographers, historians, geologists … the list is (almost) endless! If you have always dreamed of taking that perfect photo, have never known the difference between elephant seals and Weddell seals or simply just want help spotting an Andean Condor swooping overhead, we guarantee a cruise to the Chilean Fjords is for you.

Why not add an Antarctica cruise as well?

Why not add an Antarctica cruise as well?

It’s good to remember that when you are at the ends of the Earth, you can still travel deeper. Many of our voyages are combinable with a 10-day trip to Antarctica, the epitome of all destinations for all real travellers. Silversea offers two options for travelling to Antarctica; brave explorers can traverse the Drake Passage (some people believe that Antarctica needs to be earnt), sailing around the fabled Cape Horn to reach the Antarctic Peninsula in two days.

See Antarctica with Antarctica Bridge

Silversea has also introduced a new option for those who are pressed for time – or fear the seasickness. Now you can fly right over the fabled stretch of water in a private charter plane and land directly on King George Island. You’ll pick up the Silver Endeavour directly from the island and start your adventure right away.

However you chose to get there, there is no denying that the Antarctic Peninsula has held travellers in its thrall for years. So, why not make this the year that you discover the White Continent for yourself?

Chilean Fjords Cruising Guide

A Chilean Fjords cruise will take you to one of the southernmost regions of the world. Admire the jaw-dropping depth of the fjords, the icy blue of massive glaciers, and the jagged peaks of snow-capped mountains from the comfort of one of our luxury cruise ships. Sail through the Chilean Fjords on a cruise to South America and discover the wild terrain and stark beauty of Patagonia.

Top Sights & Attractions on a Chilean Fjords Cruise

Experience the thrill of seeing a towering glacier from up close. Marvel at its glistening blue ice from the comfort of your private veranda or from one of the ship’s decks. If you’re lucky, you might even witness a calving display, which is when a chunk of ice detaches from the face of a glacier and falls thunderously into the ocean.

Local Wildlife

Another highlight of a cruise around the Chilean fjords is spotting endemic wildlife you won’t see anywhere else in the world. Watch colonies of Magellanic penguins, named after the famous Portuguese explorer, congregate in large groups on land. See Andean condors, one of the largest birds on the planet, soar above the sky. Or catch a glimpse of a colony of leopard sea lions as they soak up the sun on the rocky shore.

Learn More About South America Shore Excursions

Culture & history of chilean fjords.

The Chilean Fjords were carved out by retreating glaciers from the past millennia. The fjords have resulted in a series of waterways that must be navigated in order to get to coastal destinations in Patagonia, such as Punta Arenas and Ushuaia. Today, the Chilean Fjords are known for their beauty and local wildlife, including whales, dolphins, and penguins.

Antarctica Cruises

Antarctic Explorer featuring the Chilean Fjords

chilean fjords and antarctica cruise

  • Zodiac cruise in secluded bays and quiet coves filled with brash ice and photograph enormous glaciers and spectacularly shaped icebergs in various shades of blue.
  • Keep a close watch for the tail fluke of whales as they take a deep dive, see porpoising penguins and ice seals such as Weddell and crabeater seals hauled out on ice floes.
  • Sail the Chilean Fjords, keeping watch for the many seabirds and marine wildlife including dolphins, sea lions and whales preparing to return to warmer climates for the winter.

Early Antarctic explorers returned from their voyages to the deep south with tales of a magnificent, ice-covered land teeming with life. Immerse yourself in the unimaginable beauty of the Antarctic Peninsula, where vast glaciers tumble into the sea, penguins are dwarfed by soaring peaks and humpback and minke whales feast on abundant krill. On this voyage, the splendid scenery extends through the Chilean Fjords, with channels flanked by majestic mountains.

Standard Activities

About the antarctic explorer featuring the chilean fjords, itinerary day to day, punta arenas.

Arrive in Punta Arenas, where you will be met by a representative and transferred to our hotel. We ask that you arrive no later than 4.00 pm so that you may attend our important briefing this evening.

Please visit the hospitality desk in the lobby between 10.00 am – 6.00 pm to collect your luggage cabin tags. Our team will confirm details regarding your embarkation day, answer any questions and provide you with information about where to dine or purchase last minute items.

Overlooking the Straits of Magellan, the city sits astride one of the world’s most historic trade routes. Today, Punta Arenas reflects a great blend of cultural backgrounds, from English sheep ranchers to Portuguese sailors. It remains an utterly fascinating testament to Chile’s rich history. Modern day Punta Arenas is home to many popular restaurants, and bars, offering a mix of local and international fare (meals at your own expense today).

At 7.00 pm this evening, meet your fellow expeditioners at a voyage briefing where we will reconfirm your transfer times for tomorrow, explain the procedures for your flight to King George Island and outline important IAATO regulations for visitors to Antarctica.

Accommodation: Hotel Cabo de Hornos (or similar)

Fly Punta Arenas to King George Island & Embarkation

This morning we will be transferred to Punta Arenas airport for our charter flight to King George Island, Antarctica (weather permitting). The flight will take approximately one hour and forty-five minutes. On arrival into King George Island our expedition team is on hand to greet you and to prepare you for your Zodiac transfer to the vessel. You will have time to settle into your cabin before our important safety briefings.

Note: King George Island is located at the northern part of the Antarctic Peninsula in the South Shetland Islands and is one of the most remote places on Earth. A clear sky with perfect visibility is required for safe take-off and landing. Your safety is our utmost priority. We apologize in advance for any delays caused due to this unpredictable situation. Please refer to our terms and conditions for a more detailed explanation.

  • Antarctic Peninsula

It’s almost impossible to describe the feeling of arriving in Antarctica. Spotting your first iceberg and taking a deep breath of some of the most fresh, crisp air on earth is an experience that will stay with you forever.

Once we arrive, the western side of the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetland Islands are ours to explore, and we have a host of choices available to us. Because we are so far south, we will experience approximately 18-24 hours of daylight and the days can be as busy as you wish.

Your experienced expedition team, who have made countless journeys to this area, will use their expertise to design your voyage from day to day, choosing the best options based on the prevailing weather, ice conditions and wildlife opportunities.

We generally make landings or Zodiac excursions twice a day. You will want to rug up before joining Zodiac cruises along spectacular ice cliffs or among grounded icebergs, keeping watch for whales, seals and porpoising penguins. Zodiacs will also transport you from the ship to land, where you can visit penguin rookeries, discover historic huts and explore some of our favourite spots along the peninsula.

While ashore we aim to stretch our legs, wandering along pebbly beaches or perhaps up snow-covered ridgelines to vantage points with mountains towering overhead and ice-speckled oceans below. If you have chosen an optional activity, you will have the option to do that whenever conditions allow, and of course keen polar plungers will have the chance to fully immerse themselves in polar waters – conditions permitting!

In addition to Zodiac cruises and shore excursions, we may ship cruise some of the narrow, dramatic straits separating offshore islands from the mainland, or linger in scenic bays to watch whales travelling or feeding. This is a great time to enjoy the observation lounge or make your way to the bridge for uninterrupted views of Antarctica in all its splendour. Keep an ear out for the creak and deep rumble of glaciers as they carve their way from summit to sea. Take a quiet moment to experience the wonder of this incredible white continent.

Drake Passage crossing

Enjoy a final morning landing in the South Shetland Islands before we re-enter the Drake Passage for our return journey to South America.

With lectures and film presentations to complete our Antarctic experience, there is still plenty of time to enjoy the magic of the Southern Ocean and the life that calls it home. There is time for reflection and discussion about what we have seen and experienced. We hope you become ambassadors for Antarctica telling your family, friends and colleagues about your journey to this magical place, advocating for its conservation and preservation so that they might one day visit the region to experience what you have been lucky to see and do here.

As we approach the tip of South America, our Captain may sail close to legendary Cape Horn, weather and time permitting.

Chilean Fjords

As we approach the tip of South America, our Captain may sail close to legendary Cape Horn, weather and time permitting. Sail through fjords and channels flanked by majestic mountains discovered by European explorers over 500 years ago. Keep a look out for seabirds and marine wildlife including dolphins, sea lions, and whales preparing to migrate to Antarctica to fatten up on plentiful krill.

Disembark in Punta Arenas

During the early morning, we are quietly slipping into dock in Punta Arenas, where we begin disembarking at around 8.00 am. Farewell your expedition team and fellow travellers as we all continue our onward journeys, hopefully with a newfound sense of the immense power of nature. A transfer to your hotel in Punta Arenas or to the airport is included in the cost of the voyage.

On disembarkation, passengers on flights departing prior to 2.00 pm will be transferred directly to Punta Arenas Airport, while those fortunate enough to be continuing their travels in this spectacular region of the world, will be transferred to their post-voyage Punta Arenas accommodation. Passengers flying after 2.00 pm will have time to explore Punta Arenas, prior to an afternoon airport transfer, the details of which will be provided onboard prior to disembarkation.

Note: At the conclusion of the voyage, we do not recommend booking flights departing Punta Arenas prior to 12.00 pm on the day of disembarkation in case there are delays.

Extra Activities

Sea kayaking, scuba diving.

Sea kayaking holidays in the humbling wilderness of Antarctica are guaranteed to stir your soul. Paddle between brash ice and icebergs of all shapes and sizes, absorbing the majestic scenery as it unfolds before you.

In Antarctica, keep your camera on-hand for unforgettable encounters with penguins, seals and whales, and occasionally leopard seals or orcas.

Led by experienced guides, you and your small group of like-minded adventurers will paddle between ice floes, brash ice and icebergs of all shapes and sizes. Paddling is one of the best ways to access and intimately explore the beautiful coastlines we visit and therefore make the most of your time in the wild and remote destinations we visit.

What’s involved?

‘Getting out amongst it’ is our philosophy, and that is exactly what we do. Weather permitting, the sea kayaking activity is normally available anytime the other expeditioners go out. Rather than traveling large distances, our aim is to ensure you see as much as possible. We paddle between 5 to 15 kilometres (2 to 4 hours) per outing, often taking a snack and a flask of hot chocolate to enjoy on our excursion.

Each small group of kayakers (up to 10 per guide) will have their own intimate exploration of the small hidden bays and coasts that are inaccessible to Zodiacs. Of course, we also make time for your own shore excursions and wildlife encounters.

The elements play an important role in our sea kayaking program. It is important that you have an adventurous attitude and understand that the weather can impact our kayaking time.

Required Experience

You must be active in the outdoors and have an adventurous spirit. For most temperate and polar you should be an intermediate paddler. In South Georgia however, conditions can be more varied and you require solid paddling experience in ocean swell and wind.

You do not need to be an expert or know how to roll. However, you must be able to swim and you should have experience in a wet exit and assisted re-entry. You should also be proficient at putting on a spray skirt by yourself and be comfortable paddling on seas with up to half a meter swell. It is also important that you gain some practice getting into a kayak from a pier, wharf, or deep shoreline where you can’t step into the kayak from standing position. You can easily practice all of this at home, plus paddling in a variety of weather conditions, before your trip.

What about beginners up to the challenge? Our guides do not offer instructional classes for beginners. Therefore, the sea kayaking option is unsuitable for complete novices. However, there is often ample time to gain the required experience before you depart. We may be able to recommend a reputable sea kayak operator in your area for some tuition prior to the trip.

Your guide will assess your ability on the initial paddle, and if you have insufficient experience, he or she reserves the right to restrict your participation in rougher conditions

Fitness Requirements

You should be fit enough to paddle for up to three hours and climb between moving Zodiacs on the water. Regular exercise is recommended, because the fitter you are the more you will enjoy the experience. The more paddles you can do before the trip, the better. We recommend at least three outings prior to your voyage.

Climates & Weather Conditions

During summer the air temperature in the Antarctic Peninsula, is generally above freezing but can range from -4°C to +5°C / 24.8°F to 41°F. The water temperature in the polar regions is close to freezing and winds sweep off the glaciers, making paddling a chilling experience. In South Georgia, there are stronger winds and swells than in Antarctica.

The Sea Kayaking activity is available for an additional surcharge and includes guided excursions and kayaking equipment

Prices are indicative only and are variable. They are calculated based on the days of voyage, ability to carry out the activity and exchange rates.

Regardless of the destination, our focus is to encounter remarkable wildlife and witness spectacular marine ecosystems. The select group of daring adventurers who choose this unique activity program will have unbeatable experiences and stories to share and cherish.

Whether you choose to dive in the freezing waters of Antarctica or the Arctic, in underwater worlds full of grounded icebergs and rare creatures, the experience is guaranteed to stir your soul.

You can rest assured that you and your small group of divers will be in safe hands with an experienced Divemaster, who will keep a close eye on the group from a Zodiac and help you maximize your experience scuba diving in some of the wildest places on Earth.

What’s involved

Weather permitting, you will dive while other expeditioners are doing their activities – kayaking, snorkelling, or exploring ashore. Our experienced dive guides are skilled at finding the best opportunities to dive, while taking into account the ever-changing weather and sea ice conditions. We aim to offer you the best quality dive experience while maintaining the highest safety standards.

Antarctic diving reveals a world of ice, where you will see glaciers, gigantic icebergs and a unique blend of marine, making for a very special experience. With numerous diving opportunities along your voyage, no two days will be alike – a truly inspiring and unforgettable experience awaits.

We try to get you off the ship to dive up to two times per day (except for sea days). However, we are always at the mercy of the weather and changes to the voyage itinerary to take advantage of unique opportunities like wildlife sightings. Embracing the unexpected is part of the excitement of expedition-style travel!

What you will see

In polar regions, the dive sites vary from shallow ice diving, diving along a wall or around a grounded iceberg. The maximum depth is 20 metres / 65 feet. The combination of sunlight and the extraordinary formations of ice cause an overwhelming, ever-changing spectre of colours, with a fantastic variety of shades and brilliance. Diving in polar areas offers opportunities to witness spectacular ice formations in addition to interesting marine life.

Our diving activity is not for beginners. Requirements vary slightly depending on the region you are diving in. For polar destinations, you must be at least an Advanced Open Water Diver and Drysuit Specialty certified diver with at least 30 drysuit dives. You are also required to complete a minimum of 10 dives in the 12 months before your trip, with a minimum of 5 of those dives in a drysuit.

Before departure you must show an internationally accepted diving certificate, diver’s logbook and a current diving medical (no more than 6 months old) from your doctor confirming that you are in suitable physical health to participate in our diving activity. A divemaster will review your form for suitability and experience before approving your diving spot.

The initial dive will be a ‘check-out’ dive so each diver can check and adjust their weights and equipment. If our divemaster feels that you do not meet the necessary experience, they have the right to exclude you from participating in the dive program. This decision will be made for your own safety and for the safety of the other divers.

Why is so much experience required?

A higher level of diving experience is required for the polar regions because of the remoteness of the location. Diving is no fun if you are cold and uncomfortable. When you are diving in cold water, you consume more air, expend more energy, and can become more fatigued. You may also find it more difficult to perform complex tasks that require manual dexterity in cold water.

We pride ourselves on taking adventurous souls to some of the most wild and remote destinations on earth, which offer endless opportunities for adventure activities like scuba diving. However, at all times safety is our highest priority.

Diving in remote polar areas is not more dangerous than normal scuba diving, but it is more equipment and labour intensive. We don’t have a decompression chamber and offer only basic medical services on board, so cannot accept risky ventures from any of the divers in this activity program.

All dives are conducted using a buddy system of two or three divers. If you are not travelling with a buddy who is diving, we will pair you up with other divers on your expedition. All divers are expected to have enough experience to read their compass, depth gauges and look out for each other in order to have a safe dive.

Before each dive, your Divemaster will brief you about the location, the weather, sea or ice conditions and the procedure of the dive. All divers are required to follow the instructions of the Divemaster and guides at all times. All participants are expected to fully understand and accept the risks involved in polar diving and participate at their own choice.

The Scuba Diving activity is available for an additional surcharge and includes guided excursions and kayaking equipment. They are calculated based on the days of voyage, ability to carry out the activity and exchange rates.

Witness wildlife and scenery unlike any other place on earth. Through crystal clear waters you’ll discover the amazing mobility and speed of penguins entering and exiting from the ice, marvel at beautiful sculpted icebergs below the water and witness marine life such as crustaceans, isopods, starfish and nudibranchs!

This unique experience will allow passengers to see both destinations in a completely new dimension, witnessing wildlife and scenery unlike any other place on earth.

This latest innovative activity option is led by our expert polar diving guides, and utilises state of the art equipment including drysuits, gloves, hood, fins, mask, and snorkel. Passengers will be provided with all of the training and equipment they need to experience Antarctica from this truly unique angle.

Passengers who take part will enjoy the opportunity to snorkel daily (weather dependent), taking delight in sheltered bays, off shore islands and secluded ship wrecks which make for spectacular wildlife viewing.

Our team of experienced guides have over 20 years’ experience and provide snorkelers with detailed briefings and best practice procedures to ensure a safe snorkeling experience.

Polar snorkeling requires at least 6 snorkelers for the activity to proceed. Please ask our team for numbers at time of booking.

In our inflatable kayaks, you can paddle safely among brash ice and along rocky shorelines where penguins and fur seals might be sunning themselves.

It’s a unique opportunity to remain fully immersed in your surroundings, at water level in your sturdy kayaks. You might see Adélie penguins darting around you or, perhaps, an Antarctic fur seal slipping off its rock as you glide past. Your experienced guides will look for wonderful opportunities for you to enjoy a paddle, and hopefully push you beyond your comfort zone, safely.

When you sign up as a paddler, you have the bonus of enjoying normal landings along with other expeditioners, plus an added paddling excursion.

In a small group of up to six paddlers, you will have a Zodiac dedicated to your group and two guides to look after you and to scout out ideal locations to enjoy a fun paddle.

When we visit the polar regions, the elements play an important role. Our Paddling program is suitable for complete beginners, and we will only offer a paddling excursion in calm conditions. Bring along your adventurous and positive attitude and you will have an unforgettable experience.

Our Paddling Activity is suitable for novices and no prior experience is required to participate. However, you must be able to swim independently for up to 25 metres and be confident in the water.

You must be able to walk on loose, uneven surfaces such as gravel or pebble beaches. You must also be able to get into your inflatable kayak at knee level. Although our Paddling activity requires no prior experience to participate, you are more likely to enjoy the experience more if you are mildly fit and undertake some regular gentle exercise at home, such as walking.

The Paddling activity is available for an additional surcharge and includes guided excursions and paddling equipment.

Cruise the Chilean Fjords and Antarctica in one combined itinerary on this Patagonia to Antarctica cruise aboard 126-guest National Geographic Resolution or 148-guest National Geographic Explorer. Uniquely join both regions into one epic odyssey on this Antarctica Chile cruise.

The southernmost realms of the planet are places of unimaginable beauty: Patagonia and Antarctica. Humpback whales breach and penguins gather by the thousands. Icebergs shimmer and sapphire-hued fjords harbor snowcapped peaks and virgin forests. Cruise the Chilean fjords to Antarctica to follow in the wake of legendary explorers like Ernest Shackleton and Ferdinand Magellan, and encounter otherworldly icescapes, calving glaciers, remote reserves, pristine parks and the incredible creatures that thrive at the edge of the world.

On this comprehensive Antarctica Chile cruise, seek out Antarctica’s iconic wildlife—including penguins, seals, and killer whales—and marvel at incandescent icebergs using a fleet of kayaks and Zodiacs. Navigate Chile’s coastal fjords and explore spectacular Glacier Alley, where monumental glaciers calve into the sea. Hike among the snowcapped “horns” of Torres del Paine National Park and enjoy special access to Karukinka Natural Park, the largest protected land area in Tierra del Fuego. And cruise the waters of Francisco Coloane Marine Park, searching for the humpback whales and dolphins that inhabit this vast marine reserve.

Both the Nat Geo Resolution and the Nat Geo Explorer cruise the Chilean fjords to Antarctica with ease. These small expedition ships are technologically advanced, fully stabilized and equipped with a well-rounded set of exploration tools including an ROV and enough kayaks and Zodiacs to send all guests out exploring at the same time. Additionally, select cabins offer private balconies for special moments taking in the awe-inspiring wilderness and the bar tab is included for all passengers.

Today, fly from Santiago to Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world. Enjoy lunch on a catamaran cruise of the Beagle Channel. Embark the ship for your Antarctica to Patagonia cruise.

National Geographic Resolution

breakfast, lunch, dinner

This 500-mile-wide strait between South America and the Antarctic Peninsula is one of the most famous bodies of water in the world. Sometimes ferocious, sometimes flat calm, the Drake is always a fascinating place in its own right. This part of the journey is your best opportunity to see gorgeous seabirds like the wandering albatross, and you might be lucky enough to encounter killer whales or rare species of dolphins. This is also a time to get to know your ship and prepare for the adventures ahead. Visit the Bridge (a great place to spot wildlife), have a relaxing massage, attend a talk about the biology of the penguins you’ll soon be seeing, or settle into a comfy chair in the observation lounge, look out over the waves and reflect on the incredible history of this fabled passage. If it does get a little rough, just take a couple of nice naps; you’ll be in Antarctica before you know it.

With long hours of daylight at this time of year, enjoy ample opportunities to explore. The schedule is flexible to take advantage of the unexpected, whether watching whales at play off the bow of the ship or enjoying an evening Zodiac cruise amid glittering icebergs. One day, possibly set out by kayak to encounter towering icebergs at water level; embark on a Zodiac excursion in search of seals and blue-eyed shags; or walk on a beach amid thousands of Adélie and gentoo penguins. The next, we possibly experience the thrill of the ship crunching through pack ice. The expert expedition team will enrich every experience.

Relax on board and enjoy the ship’s amenities as the coast of Antarctica disappears from view. Round the southernmost tip of South America at Cape Horn and witness the dramatic meeting of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans en route to South America.

Sail into southern Patagonia’s vast wilderness of forested isles, mirror-like lakes and snowcapped peaks. Myriad fjords cut between soaring granite walls and waterfalls tumble from high above. Explore the region known as Chile’s “Glacier Alley,” part of the UNESCO- recognized Cape Horn Biosphere Reserve. Cruise into the secluded Pia Fjord, admiring views of its massive glacier; and glide into Garibaldi Fjord in Alberto de Agostini National Park, where the Andes meet the sea. Get up close to the monumental wall of ice that marks the edge of Garibaldi Glacier, exploring by Zodiac or kayak. Continue to Agostini Fjord, where numerous glaciers originate from the nearby mountains, for a chance to witness thunderous glacial calving.

Local pilots will join the ship’s captain on the Bridge to guide the ship through the winding Kirke Narrows, accessible only to small expedition ships. Then continue to discover the Chilean fjords where options exist to explore by ship or take a forest walk.

Early this morning the ship docks in picturesque Puerto Natales before heading out to explore majestic Torres del Paine National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Set out by foot or by vehicle across the windswept, rugged landscape, which spans more than 550,000 acres and harbors an astounding variety of geological forms, from the soaring granite pillars of the “horns” to windswept grasslands to rivers, glaciers, and gem-colored lagoons. Keep an eye out for guanacos, rheas, foxes and armadillos.

Today, enter the Strait of Magellan to explore Francisco Coloane Marine Park. The park covers more than 165,000 acres of land and sea and is home to an abundance of wildlife, including humpback whales, two species of sea lions and Magellanic penguins. Cruise along the coastline by Zodiac and kayak to spot black-and-white Peale’s dolphins, the endangered Chilean dolphin and Andean condors.

Cruise to Tierra del Fuego and venture into the archipelago’s largest protected land area: Karukinka Natural Park. Visit this private  reserve by special permission, searching for Andean foxes, guanacos, black-browed albatross and more. Then sail to Ainsworth Bay, a stunning fjord surrounded by subpolar forest, keeping an eye out for elephant seals.

Disembark in Punta Arenas and board a charter flight to Santiago to connect with your overnight flight home.

Welcome to Aurora Expeditions’  Spirit of Antarctica  featuring  the Chilean Fjords expedition.

As Antarctica laps up the last of the summer sun and the landscape bathes in dappled light, its inhabitants show no signs of slowing down. Sail across the famed Drake Passage to and from Antarctica, admiring spectacular seabirds and approaching the ice as the explorers of old did – by sea. With one eye on the sky, watching for skuas, terns or cormorant chicks, you will also need one eye on the water’s surface. This time of year is when humpback whales are peaking in numbers and when you may see penguin chicks heading out for their first swim.

• Hone your ice and wildlife photography skills.

• In Zodiacs, explore quiet bays and coves in search of wildlife and marvelling at dazzling icebergs.

• Observe extraordinary wildlife including migrating whales and moulting penguins.

• Sail the Chilean Fjords, keeping watch for the many seabirds and marine wildlife including dolphins, sea lions and whales preparing to return to warmer climates for the winter.

In true expedition style we encourage exploration and adventure, offering flexibility in challenging environments in a way that puts you among the action to see and do as much as possible. This itinerary is only a guide and subject to change due to ice and weather conditions.

Day 1 Arrive Punta Arenas

Arrive in Punta Arenas, where you will be met by a representative of Aurora Expeditions and transferred with your fellow expeditioners to your assigned pre-voyage hotel. If you are already in Punta Arenas, we ask you to make your way to your hotel. Check-in is from 3.00 pm.

Upon arrival, please visit the Aurora Expeditions hospitality desk in the lobby between 3.00 pm and 7.00 pm, to collect your luggage cabin tags, and confirm if you wish to join our Punta Arenas tour tomorrow. Our team will confirm details regarding your embarkation day, answer any questions and provide you with information about where to dine or purchase last minute items.

Expeditioners arriving after 7.00 pm will find a welcome pack waiting for them at check-in. We ask you to visit our hospitality desk tomorrow between 8.00 am – 10.00 am.

The remainder of your time is at leisure. All meals today are at your own expense.

Assigned accommodation: Cabo De Hornos (or similar)

Day 2 Embarkation

This morning, enjoy breakfast and check-out. Please ensure your cabin luggage is fitted with cabin tags clearly labelled with your name and cabin number. Take your cabin luggage to hotel reception, prior to, or at check-out. Your luggage will be stored and transferred directly to the port for clearance, to be placed in your cabin ahead of your arrival on board. Please keep any valuables or personal items with you throughout the day.

The township of Punta Arenas was founded in the 1500s and is the gateway to the Strait of Magellan. It was originally established as a prison colony and later the biggest commercial and supplying centre of all vessels travelling between the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean. The town has since made a name for itself as the central base for exploring Patagonia and Antarctica. At first glance, Punta Arenas may not seem like much of a destination, but if you have time to walk around, you’ll discover many unique and interesting things to see in this southern town. One thing you may notice is the colonial-style architecture, including Palacio Sara Braun, built in the late 1800s. At the centre of Punta Arenas’ old town is Plaza Muñoz Gamero, the park-like square surrounded by tall trees and a lush vegetation. In the middle of the plaza is a statue dedicated to Ferdinand Magellan, discoverer of the Strait of Magellan and the first European to cross the Pacific Ocean. We recommend a walk along the waterfront promenade, from which you will see the island of Tierra del Fuego and the Strait of Magellan in the distance. You will also be able to see the Maritime Monument, representing the first settlers in the area, many shipwrecks abandoned from old trading days, and you may also be lucky enough to see the cormorants taking off over the sea.

At approximately 4.00 pm, you will be transferred to the port for embarkation.

Once aboard, you’ll have time to settle into your cabin before our important mandatory briefings. As the ship pulls away from port, we’ll gather on the deck to farewell Punta Arenas and commence our adventure to Antarctica.

This evening get to know your fellow expeditioners and friendly expedition team and crew at a welcome dinner to celebrate the start of a thrilling adventure to Antarctica.

Days 3 Chilean Fjords

Sail along the legendary Beagle Channel and enjoy splendid scenery of fjords and channels flanked by majestic mountains. Keep watch for the many seabirds and marine wildlife including dolphins, sea lions and whales preparing to migrate to Antarctica to fatten up on plentiful krill. In the evening, we exit Nassau Bay, sail past Cape Horn and prepare to enter Drake Passage.

Days 4-5 Drake Passage Crossing

As we commence the Drake Passage crossing, we make the most of our time getting comfortable with the motions of the sea. Our expedition team prepare you for our first landing with important wildlife guidelines and biosecurity procedures and start our lecture program to help you learn more about Antarctica’s history, wildlife and environment.

Our wildlife experiences begin as we enjoy watching and photographing the many seabirds, including majestic albatrosses and giant petrels following our vessel. On sea days, you may can enjoy the facilities on board the vessel including the gym, wellness centre or the relaxing in one of the observation lounges.

Nearing the South Shetland Islands and the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula on the afternoon of day four, the excitement is palpable with everyone converging on one of the observation decks watching for our first iceberg. The ocean takes on a whole new perspective once we are below the Antarctic Convergence and are surrounded by the surreal presence of floating ice sculptures. The memory of your first big iceberg sighting is likely to remain with you for a lifetime. Time and weather permitting, we may attempt our first landing in Antarctica by late afternoon.

Days 6-10 Antarctic Peninsula

It is almost impossible to describe the feeling of arriving in Antarctica.

If you have chosen an optional activity, you will have the option to do participate in the activity whenever conditions allow, and of course keen polar plungers will have the chance to fully immerse themselves in polar waters - conditions permitting! The polar plunge can take place at any time during the voyage, so listen out for the announcement from the expedition team and get ready for the most exhilarating dip of your life!

In addition to Zodiac cruises and shore excursions, we may ship cruise some of the narrow, dramatic straits separating offshore islands from the mainland, or linger in scenic bays to watch whales travelling or feeding. This is a great time to enjoy the observation lounge or make your way to the bridge (open at the captain’s discretion) for uninterrupted views of Antarctica in all its splendour. Listen out for the creak and deep rumble of glaciers as they carve into sea. Take a quiet moment to experience the wonder of the pristine paradise of the splendid white continent.

Days 11-12 Drake Passage Crossing

Day 13 Disembark Ushuaia

During the early morning, we cruise up the Beagle Channel, before quietly slipping into dock in Ushuaia, where we will be free to disembark around 8.00 am. Farewell your expedition team and fellow passengers as we all continue our onward journeys, hopefully with a newfound sense of the immense power of nature.

Upon disembarkation, for those continuing their travels in the region, transportation to the hotel will be arranged exclusively for guests who have booked their accommodations through Aurora or for those staying in downtown areas near the port. Expeditioners departing on flights prior to 12:30 pm will be directly transferred to Ushuaia Airport, those with flights after 12:30 pm will have the opportunity to explore Ushuaia before an afternoon airport transfer, and the transfer procedures and details will be communicated onboard before disembarkation.

Note: At the conclusion of the voyage, we do not recommend booking flights departing Ushuaia prior to 12.00 pm on the day of disembarkation in case there are delays.

Sea Kayaking Vacations

One of the most exhilarating ways to experience antarctica, the arctic and beyond..

Sea kayaking holidays in the humbling wilderness of  Antarctica , the Arctic , and some of the world’s most biodiverse regions, are guaranteed to stir your soul. Paddle around brash ice and near icebergs of all shapes and sizes, absorbing the majestic scenery as it unfolds before you.

This Kayaking Program was created by kayakers for kayakers! Our program style offers the chance to develop and enhance your skills and to connect with our expert guides and your fellow Expeditioners. Participating with the small group through your voyage will minimise wasted time with briefings and equipment tryouts and maximise time on the water.

All of our  Expert Guides  are professional kayak guides, who have led trips around the world, specialise in the Polar Regions and have been chosen for their passion for the sport.

Kayaking is one of the best ways to access and intimately explore the beautiful coastlines we visit and make the most of your time in the wild and remote  destinations we visit .

You have the option to discuss with the guides what you want out of your trip and they will help with recommendations on when to paddle, when to go ashore and when it’s possible to do both in one outing.

Our  purpose-built ships  have been designed with the activities in mind, each equipped with dedicated space for our high-end equipment, including Kokatat dry suits, Seals sprayskirts, PFD’s from Astral and paddles from Werner and Aqua Bound.

Please note:

  • Kayakers must be 14 years or over. A Parent or Guardian’s signature is required for participants between 14 and 18 years old.
  • There is upper size limit in the drysuits we provide onboard. If you cannot find a suitable size within our range and you would like to bring your own, please contact our Activity Specialist to discuss in more detail.
  • Travel Insurance  is mandatory on all Aurora Expeditions voyages. An additional policy or premium may be required to ensure you have adequate coverage for including this activity.

‘Getting out amongst it’ is our philosophy, and that is exactly what we do. Weather permitting, the sea kayaking activity is normally available anytime the other expeditioners go out. Rather than travelling large distances, our aim is to ensure you see as much as possible. We paddle between 5 to 15 kilometres (2 to 4 hours) per outing, often offering a combination of both kayaking and onshore landings so you won’t miss out.

The level of experience required differs slightly depending on the region you are visiting. For all trips, a basic level of sea kayak experience is required, equivalent to that gained in a half day Paddle Australia “Intro Sea Skills” course. You do not need to be an expert or know how to roll; however, it is encouraged that you are comfortable in a sea kayak in the ocean, and are required to be able to swim, have a moderate level of physical fitness, and no medical conditions that prevent you from safely participating. We are happy to assist you with any preparation you may need or want prior to your voyage.

Our guides do not offer instructional classes for beginners. Therefore, the sea kayaking option is unsuitable for complete novices. If your experience is limited, we encourage you to contact us to discuss your suitability. There is often ample time to gain the required experience before you depart.

Your guide will assess your ability on the initial paddle, and if you have insufficient experience, he or she reserves the right to restrict your participation in rougher conditions.

You should be fit enough to paddle for 15 minutes without stopping at a moderate pace, for up to three hours at a time with breaks. We encourage a moderate level of fitness and recent kayaking experience as much as possible.

Polar regions

During summer the air temperature in the Antarctic Peninsula, Greenland and Spitsbergen are generally above freezing but can range from -4°C to +5°C / 24.8°F to 41°F. The water temperature in the polar regions is close to freezing and winds sweep off the glaciers, making paddling a chilling experience. Scotland, Iceland, Norwegian coasts are warmer with water temperatures of around 12°C / 53.6°F. In the Antarctic Peninsula, and Svalbard we often paddle in sheltered locations with generally calm conditions. In exposed locations places like South Georgia, we often encounter stronger wind and more challenging paddling conditions. Your guides will be constantly searching for a way to get you out safely and enjoyably.

Temperate regions

The northern waters in Scotland, Faroes, Iceland and Norway are warmer than the polar regions but water temperatures of around 12 °C/ 53.6°F mean you may opt to wear your paddle jacket on a warm, sunny day or our dry suits on a cool day. Surf landings are not likely, but you must be capable of paddling in a small swell or wind chop, with winds up to 20 knots. With that being said, we will not paddle if wind conditions are too strong and there is no sheltered area for paddling.

Tropical regions

In Costa Rica and Panama, April is the end of the dry season. The shoulder season begins in May, bringing increased humidity. Afternoon rain showers are possible in May with temperatures ranging from 26-36 °C (80- 96 °F). Winds are generally light at this time of year. The water temperature ranges from 27 -29 °C. Surf landings are not likely, but be prepared to paddle in a small swell or wind chop, with winds up to 15 knots. Again, we will not paddle if wind conditions are too strong and there is no sheltered area for paddling.

The Sea Kayaking activity is available for an additional surcharge and includes guided excursions and kayaking equipment. Fares for this activity start from US$900, AU$1,250, £460 or €550.

Prices are indicative only and are variable. They are calculated based on the days of voyage, ability to carry out the activity and exchange rates.

Aurora Expeditions will be providing kayak booties and dry suits. Below is the measurement chart for the sizes we provide. If you prefer to bring your own dry suit for this activity, please contact our Activity Specialist to discuss the suitability of your equipment.

If you cannot find a suitable size from the options available and you do not have your own custom dry suit, unfortunately we will be unable to accommodate you for this activity.

There are 20 paces available and our guide to paddler ratio is 1:10 and we provide an accompanying safety Zodiac.

Kayakers must be 14 or over. Parent or Guardian’s signature is required for participants between 14 and 18 years old.

Sea kayaking is offered in place of regular shore excursions. We aim to paddle as often as possible. Depending on the voyage, we generally aim to paddle twice per day.

We will give you a drybag for extra clothing, binoculars and anything that needs to be kept dry. You should also carry a water bottle. We recommend bringing a waterproof camera or phone, or ensuring you have a good quality waterproof case.

If the weather changes during our outing we will head back to the ship and perhaps join a shore excursion. The ship’s captain, expedition leader and kayak guide always maintain close contact to ensure a safe paddling experience. We do not attempt to paddle too far away from the ship. The emphasis is on experiencing the destination rather than travelling long distances.

The kayaks are made with a hard plastic and are easily paddled in swell and conducting shore landings, and through small patches of brash ice. We manoeuvre around the larger ice chunks and floes.

Kayaking in the poles offers a unique wildlife viewing experience. In Antarctica, we have many opportunities to encounter penguins, seals and whales, and occasionally we may even spot leopard seals or orcas. In the Arctic, we’ll paddle under nesting bird colonies, past massive glaciers and around large icebergs, however we maintain a safe distance from polar bears and walruses. Our guides carry rifles and flare guns in the Arctic to ensure your safety against polar bears.

Kayakers in wild temperate regions will have a unique wildlife experience, with possible encounters with seals and basking sharks. You will have the opportunity to view some of the largest sea bird colonies in the northern hemisphere.

The superb wildlife-viewing opportunities are endless in th e astonishingly biodiverse nature reserves we visit. Kayaks offer a unique opportunity to view marine and land mammals, coral reefs, tropical fish, sea birds and an astonishing range of rainforest birds. We will bring our snorkelling gear with us during our paddles and take advantage of any opportunities to view marine life up close.

In the unlikely event of a capsize, your experienced guide will assist by righting the kayak, stabilising it then pumping it out. Paddlers will re-enter with the guide’s help, or with a support Zodiac. With drysuits and warm clothing underneath you will be comfortable in cold water for up to half an hour. Note that the kayaks have separate compartments with bulkheads, which means they will float after a capsize.

No. Each kayaking place is for one person only. We value a program style that maintains participants through trip to maximise skill progression, group bonding and dynamics, and minimise wasted time with briefings and equipment tryouts.

In  temperate and tropical destinations we visit , you can explore remarkable kelp forests and swim among dugong, sea turtles and whale sharks. Marvel at brightly coloured coral, uncover historic shipwrecks or perhaps even swim between two continents – the opportunities for adventure are endless.

You can rest assured that you and your small group of divers will be in safe hands with an  experienced Divemaster , who will keep a close eye on the group from a Zodiac and help you maximise your experience scuba diving in some of the wildest places on Earth.

‘Getting out amongst it’ is our philosophy, and that is exactly what we do.

Antarctic and  Arctic diving  reveals a world of ice, where you will see glaciers, gigantic icebergs and a unique blend of marine, making for a very special experience.

Scuba diving in Antarctica and the Arctic reveals worlds of hidden ice, where you will observe glaciers, gigantic icebergs and fascinating marine life underwater, making for a very special experience.

In a wetsuit or perhaps even a drysuit, you can explore remarkable kelp forests, swim among sonorous whales, uncover historic ship-wrecks and even swim between two continents!

While Iceland is renowned for its dramatic terrestrial landscape, many people don’t know that it offers excellent scuba diving opportunities for those with drysuit diving experience. Here you can dive between tectonic plates, experience hydrogen sulfide bubbles within a geothermal spring, and see a huge variety of marine life in the fjords and ocean.

The United Kingdom is full of diving hotspots and hundreds of shipwrecks that divers come from all over the world to explore.

Embark on a wreck dive, encounter majestic marine wildlife including dugong, sea turtles and whale shark, or marvel at brightly-coloured coral. Discover some of Earth’s most biodiverse marine ecosystems, many of which have been designated as ‘Hope Spots’ by Mission Blue .

When diving in tropical destinations such as Costa Rica and Panama, you will see an incredible array of marine life. Caño Island Biological Reserve boasts some of the best diving spots in the country. Because of the clear see, divers will have visibility of between 10-30 metres / 30-100 feet. In addition to colourful coral gardens, you may find bull and nurse sharks, manta rays, dolphins, sea turtles, and the occasional humpback whale. As for fish, get ready to see damselfish, parrotfish, butterflyfish, porcupine fish, goatfish, goby, and perhaps an octopus.

For temperate and tropical regions, you must be at least an Advanced Open Water Diver with a minimum of 30 logged dives. You are also required to complete a minimum of 6 of those dives within 12 months of your trip.

You may also find it more difficult to perform complex tasks that require manual dexterity in cold water .

The Scuba Diving activity is available for an additional surcharge and includes guided excursions, fares for this activity start from US$940, AU$1,300, £770 or €860.

Prices are indicative only and are variable. They are calculated based on the days of voyage, ability to carry out the activity and exchange rates, reach out to our friendly team for voyage specific pricing.

Scuba diving faqs.

We limit our diving groups to a maximum of 6 divers in cold water destinations and 8 divers in warm water destinations. While you are in the water, your guide will be on board the Zodiac keeping a close eye on the group, ready to provide assistance and to give you advice and tips on how to maximise your experience on each of your dives.

You should be 14 or older to participate in our scuba diving program. Please note the minimum age required to complete most Junior Advanced Open Water Diver courses is 12. Drysuit Diver specialty courses require a minimum age of 10.

Aside from days at sea, we plan to dive up to twice per day. However, there are certain factors that are out of our control, including weather conditions and availability of anchorages. Voyage itineraries are only a guideline and safety is always the priority.

Weather can be hard to predict and can vary from day to day. Because of this, we often need to adjust our ‘itineraries’ to take advantage of favourable weather and ice conditions. Our flexible approach means we can alter the itinerary to incorporate wildlife sightings and other one-of-a-kind opportunities. Embracing the unexpected is part of the excitement of expedition-style travel. A flexible approach and a sense of humour will make the voyage more enjoyable for you and your fellow expeditioners.

Exclusive Zodiac cruising will be offered if the conditions for diving are not suitable.

English is the main language used for our dive operation. For safety reasons, you must be proficient in English in order to participate in our scuba diving activity.

In the polar regions, you will encounter marine life seemingly from another planet, such as the giant isopods and salps. Take your time to explore and enjoy an environment few divers have ever experienced. Observe kelp walls, sea snails, spider crabs, sea butterflies, jellyfish, squid, sea squirts, squat lobsters, starfish, krill anemones, peacock worms and countless fish species. In Antarctica you may have the opportunity to dive with penguins, whales and seals, which race fearlessly by, graceful in a way that’s not possible above the surface.

Get lost in kelp forests in temperate regions, or swim with sonorous whales. In tropical regions, marvel at colourful coral gardens frequented by damselfish, parrotfish, butterflyfish, porcupine fish, goatfish, goby and octopus. Delight in swimming with playful dolphins and curious seals as you make your way through the spectacular underwater ecosystems. Keep a lookout for bull and nurse sharks, manta rays, sea turtles, and the occasional humpback whale.

No. Each diving place is for one person only.

While diving is generally an equipment intensive activity, diving in polar regions requires an extensive amount of additional equipment because of the cold weather and water. On board we have two compressors, steel cylinders and lead weights. The cylinders we provide are steel 12.2 litres by Faber, with dual outlet valve, yoke and DIN compatible filled to 220 bar. Lead weights are available in 0.5, 1, 3 and 4 kilograms (1, 2, 6.6 and 9 pounds).

All divers must bring their own personal equipment. This will depend on where you are diving and a detailed list will be shared with you when you express interest in adding this activity to your voyage. We also have a limited number of hire equipment available onboard.

In polar regions, where the ocean water can be as cold as -1˚C/30˚F, a drysuit is the only thing that will keep you dry during a dive. The type of dry suit you use is not important so long as it fits you correctly and you are proficient in using it.

Insulating undergarments will trap air against your body to keep you warm. The colder the water, the more (or thicker) layers of undergarments you will need. We recommend wearing two or three layers, depending on your drysuit. The first layer should be a type of material that helps wick any moisture away from the body, while the second and third layers should be should thicker insulating material, such as fleece, synthetic pile or thinsulate. The one-piece jumpsuit style is the most common and comfortable configuration of dive wear and is available in a variety of thickness depending on your drysuit and the water temperature.

The right accessories will also help you have a more comfortable experience. We recommend a 5-10mm neoprene hood with face and neck seal, regular 5-7mm neoprene semi-dry gloves or mitts, and three-finger mitts over five-finger gloves.

Finally, it is important to bring a warm hat and gloves to wear before and after each dive, and a wind and waterproof spray jacket to keep the cold wind off your drysuit.

Aurora Expeditions is proud to have some of the world’s best dive masters on our staff, so you can rest assured that you are in safe hands. Our guides have dived all over the world and in some of the most remote and challenging locations. Our team of  experienced Divemasters  has over 20 years’ polar diving experience.  YourDivemaster will ensure that you adhere to Standard Safety Diving Practices at all times,  provide you with detailed briefings and share best practice procedures to ensure a safe diving experience.

Paddling The thrill of visiting wild and remote regions on an expedition to Antarctica, Costa Rica and the scattered isles of

The thrill of visiting wild and remote regions on an expedition to Antarctica , Costa Rica  and the scattered isles of western Scotland is elevated when you’re actively immersed in the environment.

‘Getting out amongst it’ is our philosophy, and that is exactly what we do.

In South Georgia, there are stronger winds and swells than in Antarctica. Scotland, Iceland, Norwegian coasts are warmer with water temperatures of around 12 °C/ 53.6°F.

The northern waters are warmer than the polar regions but water temperatures of around 12 °C/ 53.6°F mean you may opt to wear your paddle jacket on a warm, sunny day or our dry suits on a cool day. Surf landings are not likely, but you must be capable of paddling in a small swell or wind chop, with winds up to 20 knots. With that being said, we will not paddle if wind conditions are too strong and there is no sheltered area for paddling.

The Paddling activity is available for an additional surcharge and includes guided excursions and paddling equipment. Fares for this activity are US$640 for all applicable Antarctica voyages, or for Wild Scotland voyage: US$580, AU$800,  £440   or €250.

Kayaking & Paddling FAQs

Yes, you will be supplied with a drybag for extra clothing, binoculars and anything that needs to be kept dry. You should also carry a water bottle. You are also welcome to bring along your own 5-10 litre drybag for personal items.

Paddlers should be aged 14 or over.

Yes, but we highly recommend a waterproof camera or phone, or a good quality waterproof case. Pelican cases are highly recommended for good cameras. A 1300 or 1400 model Pelican case is well suited for this activity if your camera and lens combination fit. However, you may be able to strap a larger case onto the back deck of the kayak.

Our paddling activity is generally done in combination with a shore landing and we paddle close to shore. Your group will have a dedicated safety Zodiac, and your guide will be in constant radio contact with our ship captain and expedition leader if additional support is required.

The inflatable kayaks are made of a soft multi layer pvc plastic and are easily paddled through small patches of brash ice. We manoeuvre around the larger ice chunks and floes.

Travel insurance including emergency evacuation coverage, is mandatory on all Aurora Expeditions voyages. You will need to ensure that your insurance policy covers you for your activity and any related equipment. An additional policy or premium may be required to ensure you have adequate coverage. Please contact us if you need assistance with your insurance policy.

No. Each paddling place is for one person only. Passengers are unable to ‘share’ a kayaking place as the kayaks and drysuits are individually issued and fitted for the duration of the voyage.

It is your choice how often you want to paddle. If you decide to spend more time during a landing to explore ashore, you just need to let your guide know in advance. However, we do encourage you to get out as much as you can! Please note that the activity surcharge is non-refundable and we are unable to assist you if you change your mind once on board. If you decide to fully cancel your participation in the activity during the voyage, please be aware that you will not be entitled to a refund – neither partially nor fully. Contact our team for further details on our paddling cancellation policy.

From Winning a Board Game Tournament to Exploring the Frozen Continent, Max — an 11-year-old living in Puerto Williams, the southernmost populated settlement in the world — shares more about his first experience visiting Antarctica.

Tuesday, June 4, 2024

By Max Zúñiga Jara

Traveling to Antarctica changed my life. As a nature enthusiast and avid player of educational games, I was the first to sign up to participate in my school’s ILAN tournament in November 2023. The tournament was organized by Antarctica21 Foundation , an organization that promotes Antarctic knowledge and science in the local communities of Tierra del Fuego. ILAN is a board game that teaches its players about the Antarctic ecosystem and its species. I was excited to win the tournament, but never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined the prize: a trip to Antarctica! The news of my victory prize left me speechless, filling me with indescribable joy and palpable anticipation for the adventure that awaited me on the icy continent.

Provided by Max Zúñiga Jara

My arrival in Antarctica was a moment of awe and wonder. With my mother, we set out on a Classic Antarctica air-cruise with Antarctica21, who sponsored the prize. From the moment I began the eight-day journey and set foot on the icy continent, I felt immersed in a world of beauty and mystery. Encounters with wildlife were unforgettable, from the majestic sea lions that greeted us to the graceful penguins that swam alongside the ship. I explored breathtaking landscapes and fascinating places, absorbing every moment with awe and gratitude. As I sailed through icy waters and walked through snowy lands, I felt connected to the majesty and fragility of nature, an experience I will never forget.

One of the most breathtaking moments I experienced was a greeting from the sea lion, which left an indelible mark on my heart. Contact with wildlife in their natural habitat thrilled and inspired me. Before heading to Antarctica, I spent hours researching and drawing the fauna I would find there. My drawings of orcas, sea lions, fish, and clams were not only a way to express my passion for nature but also a tool for learning and research.

chilean fjords and antarctica cruise

My experience in Antarctica left me with a deep appreciation for the importance of caring for our environment. I learned about the unique biodiversity and fragile ecosystem of the icy continent and committed to being a champion of conservation. I realized that Antarctica is much more than a tourist destination; it is a natural treasure that we must protect and preserve for future generations. My adventure inspired me to care for the environment and promote environmental awareness in my community and beyond.

My journey from the ILAN tournament to my exploration of Antarctica was filled with excitement, discovery, and learning. My story reminds me of the transformative power of adventure and the importance of caring for our planet. Through my experience, I hope to inspire others to explore, learn, and protect our beautiful natural world.

I am thankful to the Antarctica21 Foundation for making this incredible journey possible and to my mother, Karina, for sharing this experience with me. Let’s continue exploring and protecting our planet together!

These Are 10 Destinations With Eye-Watering Fjords Just Waiting To Be Explored

Fjords are one of the most stunning natural landscapes in the world. True fjords are hewn out of mountain valleys by glaciers and consist of a long, narrow inlet with steep sides or cliffs. After the glacier has melted, the fjords are flooded by the sea. While Norway is the most famous destination for fjords, there are plenty of other places around the world with spectacular fjords.

From Kenai Fjords National Park in Alaska (home to beautiful fjords) to Norway and all the way to New Zealand, there are many places around the world with fjords that are worth seeing. It is not possible to list all the places with fjords in the world - other places not listed here include Washington state, Tasmania of Australia, Russia, and Argentina. Here are ten beautiful destinations with fjords perfect for a cruise.

Related: Norway's Most Scenic Road Trip: Fjords, Dramatic Views, & More On Lysevegen Road

Norway: The Home Of Fjords

Norway is, in many ways, defined by it is fjords. Without the fjords, Norway's coastline stretches for around 2,500 kilometers or 1,600 miles, but with the fjords, it's a massive 29,000 kilometers or 18,000 miles.

Norway alone has around 1,200 fjords. The fjords of Norway are among some of the most dramatic in the world and are enchanted by their history associated with the Vikings.

Norway and New Zealand are often compared for their fjords , but only those who visit both countries can know for sure which boasts the most beautiful.

  • Example Fjords: Geirangerfjord, Sognefjord, Aurlandsfjord, & Nærøyfjord

Alaska: Take A Cruise Up The Dramatic Coasts

The state of Alaska has perhaps the most dramatic coastlines in the US - and some of the most beautiful fjords in the world. It is popular to take a cruise up the coastline of Alaska and explore the fjords, including around Juneau - the state capital of Alaska.

Keep an eye out for bald eagles, brown bears, and humpback whales while exploring these Alaskan fjords.

  • Example Fjords: Tracy Arm Fjord, Lynn Canal, Endicott Arm, Kenai Fjords

New Zealand: See Milford Sound In Fiordland

Fiordland National Park is the largest national park in New Zealand , and it preserves all of New Zealand's fjords. Here the fjords are erroneously named "Sounds" - a sound is a flooded valley, while a fjord is a flooded glacial valley.

Milford Sound is the most famous and dramatic fjord in New Zealand, while Doubtful Sound offers a more remote experience. Milford Sound is one of the most accessible fjords of the Southern Hemisphere.

  • Example Fjords: Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound

Related: Why Milford Sound Is All The More Ethereal In The Rain

Chile: See The Dramatic Fjords Of Patagonia

It is hard to find landscapes in the world that rival those of Patagonia (the southern region of South America in Chile and Argentina that is home to some of the best fjords in the world). The fjords here are remote and spectacular.

Take the time to explore these fjords with a cruise or even a multi-day kayaking expedition . Pack a raincoat as well, as these fjords can be incredibly wet.

  • Example Fjords: Talcahuano, Quemchi, & English Narrows

Related: The Complete Guide: How, Why, And When To Visit Argentina's Awe-Inspiring Patagonia

Greenland: The Frozen Fjords Of The Largest Island

Greenland is still largely frozen and hosts the largest icecap in the world outside of Antarctica. Here visitors can see the massive glaciers carving the fjords today, and lucky visitors may also be able to see the glaciers "calve" as massive junks of ice break away from the terminus of the glacier.

These are some of the remotest fjords in the world, and they are dramatic.

  • Example Fjords: Ilullisat Icefjord, Alpefjord, & Tunulliarfik Fjord

British Columbia: The Southern Extension Of Alaska's Fjords

Fjords don't respect random national boundaries, and they continue south from Alaska into Canada's British Columbia and Washington.

British Columbia (or BC) is home to many of the most dramatic landscapes of Canada, from the Canadian Rockies to some of Canada's most picturesque coastlines.

  • Example Fjords: Howe Sound, Portland Canal

South Georgia: A Remote Sub-Antarctic Island Teeming With Life

South Georgia is one of the remote and uninhabited subantarctic islands in the far South Atlantic Ocean that also boasts dramatic fjords. The main way to visit South Georgia is with it a subantarctic cruise expedition.

Here visitors can also see expansive penguin colonies, massive seabird colonies, and a sea full of whales, seals, and other marine life.

  • Example Fjords: Cumberland Bay, Drygalski Fjord

Antarctica: The Frozen Continent

Apart from parts of the Antarctic Peninsula, Antarctica remains the world's frozen continent. Travelers here can see Mother Nature's sculpturing of the fjords in action.

Many of the would-be-fjords remain locked in ice, but on the Antarctic Peninsula, it is possible to see dramatic fjords that only a few ever get to see (mostly on Antarctica cruise expeditions).

  • Example Fjords: Lallemand Fjord

Iceland: A Nation Born Of Ice & Fire

The landscapes of Iceland seem out-of-this-world and other-worldly. Iceland is a country born of ice and fire, having been formed by volcanoes, but much of its interior is locked in ice. Travel the Ring Road around Iceland (where the ghost town of Skalar can be found) and discover numerous dramatic fjords.

Iceland is a destination that travelers fall in love with and inevitably list among their favorite destinations.

  • Example Fjords: Mjóifjördur, Eyjafjördur, & Dýrafjördur

Scotland: See The Fjords Of The Highlands

Scotland is not well-known for its fjords, but the Highlands of Scotland is home to around 111 fjords. The Highlands region of Scotland offers some of the most dramatic landscapes of the United Kingdom - and arguably the most dramatic coastlines.

Some of the lochs, isles, and inlets of Scotland may, in fact, be fjords.

Onboard Activities

Each day on board offers delicious dining options, world-class entertainment and enriching activities.

BarsandLounges

The Bow Lounge provides the closest access to water level making it the perfect spot for guests to spend some time watching for marine life.

Located on Deck 6, at the forward-most part of the vessel, the Bow Lounge provides the closest access to water level via the foredeck, making it the perfect spot for guests to spend some time watching for marine life. Within a few steps, guests can be outside, with a vantage point that is ideal to watch the ship’s course, spot wildlife, or take in the beautiful natural scenery.

The Bow Lounge introduces some technological enhancements, providing guests with a first for Seabourn with touch screens showing the ship’s plotted location, as well as navigational charts and scientific information used to help guide the ship on its journey. Large screens project live footage from mounted cameras outside the ship, and from a drone when conditions permit, while the touch screen monitors invite guests to explore on their own with a live map, weather information, and notes detailing upcoming expeditions. Expedition Team members will be available within the Lounge throughout the day to interact with guests, answer questions, provide interpretation and aid in spotting wildlife.

The space provides direct access to the Bow Sprit on Deck 6 forward (when conditions permit) to give guests the sensation of standing in front of the ship and views of waves parting and ice sloughing off the bow at the waterline.

Constellation Lounge

Featuring stunning 270-degree views the Constellation Lounge offers guests a breathtaking perspective on the remote destinations in the world.

The Constellation Lounge is the highest indoor viewing point on each ship. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls wrap around the space, offering guests stunning 270-degree, outward-facing views as far as their eyes can see, heightening their expeditionary spirit while bringing them closer to wildlife and wonders at sea and in port.

In addition, the expedition team will be in the lounge regularly to help identify points of interest, wildlife and geological wonders. Imagine glimpsing killer whales, waddling penguins, and sea lions in Antarctica; sleepy-eyed sloths, sprightly monkeys, and colorful parrots in the rainforests of South and Central America; and icebergs bobbing in the seas and waterfalls rushing over cliffs in the far reaches of the Arctic and Northern Europe – all from the comfort of the Constellation Lounge.

The Constellation Lounge offers Seabourn’s popular Early Morning Riser continental breakfast, while afternoons features the line’s popular and recently enhanced Afternoon Tea service. Steeped in the tradition of proper English tea service, yet as fresh and memorable as a newly brewed pot, the elegant daily tea service incorporates the finest luxury tea brand TWG Tea. Beautiful Santiago

Start your adventure in style

Your trip starts with an overnight stay in Santiago, Chile’s energetic cultural center. Packed with museums, beautiful architecture, and restaurants, the city checks all of the boxes you’d expect of a South American capital. You’ll see that sites and attractions abound, so you’ll only be limited by time, not choice. If you have time, head to the Mercado Central fish market to sample the classic Chilean seafood stew, caldillo de congrio.

With so much on offer, if you feel you need more time to explore the capital of Chile, we recommend coming a few days early, and joining one of our optional Pre-Programmes.

Punta Arenas, Chile’s southern port

Island adventures

You’ll leave Santiago early in the morning and fly to Punta Arenas, the largest city in Chilean Patagonia. This is a place of old world, romantic charm, where discovery lies around every corner. It’s also one of the southernmost cities in the world.

Your expedition ship MS Maud awaits. A mandatory health and safety session will be held for everyone after boarding. Afterward, you will meet some of the crew and the Expedition Team, who will be your guides, hosts, and travel companions.

Rivers of Ice

Be amazed by this natural wonder

Nothing can prepare you for this wild and remote wonderland. Admire the serenity of this maze of waterways, surrounded by islands, glaciers and steep mountains.  If weather and wildlife allow, we will attempt a landing in a tranquil glacial valley.

In a secluded corner of Glacier Alley, the enormous Pia glacier cascades out of the mountains toward the sea, creaking and cracking along the way. This colossal river of ice often calves into the ocean, so keep a lookout for enormous splashes and listen to the mysterious noises the glacier makes.

Beagle Channel, Cape Horn, and the Drake Passage

At the bottom of south america.

If it’s a clear day as we pass through the Beagle Channel, you may be able to see towering Mount Darwin, part of the southernmost range of the Andes mountains.

At the tip of South America lies the legendary Cape Horn. It was a major milestone in the old clipper routes that connected Europe with the Far East and Oceania. Most are unaware of the true extent of its historical significance. This is where the open waters of the Atlantic and Pacific collide, creating powerful waves that are made even stronger by swirling westerly winds.

The notoriously turbulent waters make it impossible to guarantee a landing here. But if conditions are favorable on the day, and the weather is stable enough to dock on the island, you can be among a select few in the world to set foot on it.

From Cape Horn, it’s a clear shot to Antarctica across the Drake Passage. The Passage was named after the English sea captain and privateer Sir Francis Drake, who discovered it by chance in 1578 when heavy winds forced his ship south, proving (unintentionally) that open water existed below the southern tip of Chile.

The Drake Passage is famous for its high winds, large waves, and strong currents. As you can imagine, it was perilous for the old sailing ships who dared to cross it. Even though the waters of the Drake Passage are usually rough, they can also be incredibly still. This dual nature has won the Passage two nicknames: ‘The Drake Shake’ or ‘The Drake Lake’. No matter the state of the sea, our modern MS Maud was built for these conditions and worse, so you don’t have to worry about a thing.

The Seventh Continent

Enjoy an experience like no other

Forget everything you’ve ever experienced before. No matter how high your expectations, Antarctica will exceed them. Holding 90% of the world’s ice in an area twice the size of Australia, it’s massive in every sense of the word. Enormous ice shelves the size of countries and icebergs tower over our ship. Glaciers cascade down through the mountains toward the shore, where they finally meet the sea, sometimes in spectacular displays of calving.

This white continent is home to an estimated 12 million penguins across seven species. Impressive statistics don’t do Antarctica justice, though. Numbers don’t capture its magnitude and magnificence, and words fail to describe the sensation of personally seeing a colony of several thousand penguins. It is a special place that you really have to see to believe.

It will be the height of summer when we arrive in Antarctica, which means towering icebergs glistening in the midnight sun and penguin colonies thronged with hatchlings. You’ll also see many seals, whales, and seabirds. Keep an eye out for skuas, shearwaters, and possibly even albatrosses.

Your Expedition Team will guide you on landings to get you closer to this incredible world of ice and wildlife. We’ll spend seven days exploring the frozen continent with no fixed itinerary, attempting landings at several possible sites. After sailing these waters for so many years, we know the best places to go and what to do. Working with or around the weather and sea ice, we’ll make the most of each day to create a truly authentic adventure.

Voyage back north

Relax and reflect

After seven unforgettable days in Antarctica, MS Maud turns back north and takes you safely back across the Drake Passage. The Expedition Team will recap experiences from the frozen continent and prepare you for our last stop in Chilean Patagonia.

We’ll spend approximately two days crossing the Drake Passage, giving you plenty of time to relax and reflect on what you’ve seen and done. If you’re feeling invigorated after last week’s activities and landings, perhaps work out in the gym. It’s a perfect time to work up an appetite and try some more of the delicious dishes in the restaurants.

The beauty of the Chilean fjords

Cruising through paradise

Fresh from our Antarctic experience, and having completed the second Drake Passage crossing, we’ll spend one last day in the Chilean Fjords. Admire the serenity of this maze of waterways, surrounded by islands, glaciers, and steep mountains. If the sea and weather conditions allow, your Expedition Team will attempt a landing.

If not, enjoy the fjords from on deck. You might spot wildlife such as Magellanic penguins and maybe even elephant seals along the coastline. If you’re lucky, you can catch sight of dolphins and several whale species that are known to explore these waters.

The end of your adventure

Arrive back where we started

We arrive back in civilization at Punta Arenas in the morning. From here, you’ll catch a flight back to Santiago de Chile, taking with you fantastic memories from your unforgettable Antarctic adventure.

However, if you’re not ready to end your adventure just yet, we recommend signing up for one of our optional Post-Programs.
