How To Plan a Trip: Clark’s Best Travel Tips To Save Money

Most of us have to book travel at some point or another, whether it’s for work, to visit family and friends or just to get away from it all on vacation.

Money expert Clark Howard , a former travel agent himself, has spent decades perfecting the art of planning and booking trips. In this article, we’ll share his secrets and show you how to use all of the available tools to make travel plans that suit your needs at the lowest possible price.

The very first thing you need to do is to make a plan. It can be as simple or as involved as you want it to be. Some people love to fly by the seat of their pants and do minimal planning, while others like to have every minute of an itinerary accounted for before they leave the house.

No matter which type of traveler you are, there are some basic steps you’ll need to take if you want to travel on a budget:

  • Select your destination: In some cases, your destination will be selected for you, and there will be no decision to make. Other times, you might have some days off from work and decide you want to scratch a place off your bucket list. Or, if you’re like Clark, you might just wait for a deal to come along and let the destination pick you .
  • Figure out your trip length: If you have only a few days off, this might already be decided for you. But if you have some flexibility in your schedule, being fluid with the number of days in your trip could be the key to saving money on travel expenses. And your destination can play into this part of the decision-making. For example, you might be able to do everything you want to do in a smaller city in a day or two, but taking in everything important to you in New York City might take a week or more.
  • Research your destination: If you’re going somewhere for the first time, you’ll want to get the lay of the land. Figuring out what you want to accomplish on your trip can help you decide exactly where you want to stay and how you intend to get around. The research process can also help you start figuring out approximate costs of things (lodging, transportation, attractions and meals) so that you can make sure you stay within your budget.
  • Know the rules: Policies and procedures can change frequently and quickly. It’s crucial to ensure you have all documents (like a driver’s license, passport and any other required information) before leaving home. Lori Silverman from Team Clark’s Consumer Action Center recommends checking Travel.State.Gov for the latest information on your destination. And also remember to check the latest health-related regulations for your destination at the CDC website .

Once you’ve got the planning part down, it’s time to figure out how you’re going to get to where you’re going. If your destination isn’t within easy driving distance or you simply don’t want to drive, an airline flight is probably going to be your best option.

Booking flights has come a long way since the days when you had to call a travel agent or the airline itself to buy tickets. Now, there are literally thousands of places to turn to book a flight. So how do you find the best price?

Conventional wisdom has held for a while that there is a “perfect” day of the week to book air travel. With the advent of dynamic pricing , that has changed. According to Team Clark’s travel expert, Clara Bosonetto, “Technology has marched on from the days of manually loading new prices. Airfares are now updated constantly and automatically using complex algorithms.”

But it’s still important to have a strategy. Flexibility is the key to landing a great deal. When you have firm travel plans, start gathering airline quotes several weeks in advance , but resist making a purchase until you’ve learned the fare patterns to your destination or until an excellent deal comes along.

We’ve found that the most robust flight search engine is Google Flights .

“Google Flights should be the first website to visit to search domestic and international airfares before you jump over to a specific airline to book a flight,” according to travel expert Clara Bosonetto. “With its many filters, it’s the best site to use when you must fly on a specific airline, must have a nonstop flight, you have a multiple city trip (flying into one city and out of another) or you want to book one-way travel.”

When you search your itinerary, Google Flights will show you options for your selected dates and let you know if the prices are higher, lower or about average for your route. The site also lets you explore fares on alternate dates with its calendar and price graph features.

Once you’ve selected a flight, the site will show you the total cost of your ticket and what’s included with that fare. You’ll also see options for upgraded tickets (if available) and what paying more will get you. If checked bags are not included in your fare, the site will let you know what that will cost you.

Google Flights

When you’re ready to book, Google Flights will send you directly to the airline’s website to complete your transaction.

The site will also let you track prices, which can potentially help you save big on airfare. When you toggle the “Track Prices” button (you must be signed in to your Google account), Google will send you alerts if the price on your selected route changes. It is important to note that fares on Southwest Airlines do not appear on Google Flights.

See our full guide to using Google Flights here.

When it comes to planning where you stay during your trip, there are a lot of options. The increasing popularity of Airbnb and other private accommodation booking services means more choices for travelers.

Still, some people prefer to stay in a hotel when they travel, and Clark has a three-step process for booking a great hotel room on a budget.

1. Book a Refundable Room

“If I’m flying somewhere — you usually book your airfare pretty well in advance — I also book a hotel room at the same time,” Clark says. “I book the best deal I can find for where I’m going but always a refundable room.”

Doing this leaves you the option to cancel the room if you find a better deal in the days leading up to your trip.

2. Search for Better Deals Before Your Trip

That’s where the next step comes in: really doing the research to find the best deal.

“I already know I have a room if I need it,” Clark says. “But I want a deal!”

Clark primarily relies on Priceline and Booking.com to research hotel deals before an upcoming trip.

As for when you’re likely to find the best deals, Clark has a strategy: “I’ll check throughout the time period leading up to my travel, but I especially concentrate one week out and less,” he says. “A lot of times, the best deals are the last few days before you travel.”

3. Cancel the Original Booking

The last thing you need to do, assuming you’ve found a better deal, is to cancel your original refundable booking.

“Occasionally that room you booked when you booked your airline deal will be the best hotel deal you’ll find,” Clark says. “But if you do it my way, most of the time you’re going to save big bucks.”

See Clark talk about his three-step hotel booking process in the video below.

If you’re looking for a more unique travel experience, Airbnb , VRB O or the vacation rentals offered through major travel sites such as Tripadvisor or Expedia , might be the way to go. This also applies if you need a larger space, prefer to have your own cooking facilities or if you plan to stay for more than a couple of nights in a destination.

You’ll sometimes get a much better deal by renting a home or condo from a private owner. But take care to know the all-in price before you hit that “Reserve Now” button. In a recent podcast , Clark pointed out that more and more vacation rentals are tacking on fees that end up making the total much higher than you’d expect when you look at the nightly rate.

See our guide for how to book the best — and safest — Airbnbs here.

How To Book a Rental Car

clark charter and travel

So, you’ve taken care of your flight and lodging plans, but you might need some way to get around on your trip. Some destinations are totally walkable. Others have great public transportation. But if you need a car, there is a strategy to booking a cheap rental.

Here are Team Clark’s six steps to getting a great deal on a rental car.

1. Figure Out What Kind of Vehicle You Need

Whether you get a sedan, SUV or van, you need to make sure the vehicle you rent makes sense for you. Important questions to ask yourself include:

  • How many people will be traveling?
  • How much, if any, luggage will I need to stow?
  • Do I need more than two doors to accommodate car seats or special needs?
  • Will I need a vehicle that can handle rough terrain?
  • Do I care if the vehicle is a basic model, or do I want something more luxurious?

2. Start Your Research With AutoSlash

The first part of your search for a rental car is a secret to a lot of people, but one that Team Clark has found can save you a lot of money: a site called AutoSlash .

AutoSlash

One of the great things about AutoSlash is that the site will monitor the vehicle you select and email you if the price on the rental drops between the time you book and the time you pick it up, allowing you to re-book at the lower price. Read our full review of saving money on rental car bookings with AutoSlash here.

3. Check the Other Aggregator Sites

Once you’ve established the lowest price you can get on your desired vehicle through AutoSlash, it’s time to compare prices on the other sites that aggregate rental car rates. Some of the most popular and trustworthy are:

  • Travelocity

4. See if You Can Get a Better Deal Directly From the Rental Car Company

Once you’ve established the best deal available between AutoSlash and the major travel booking sites, head directly to the rental agency to see if it can match or beat the price you’ve already found, either on the agency’s website or by calling on the phone.

5. Book the Best Deal

Generally, with car rentals, you’re just reserving the car and not paying upfront. That means you won’t even have to give up a credit card number to lock in your reservation. It also means that, unlike most airline tickets and hotel reservations, you won’t be penalized if you need to cancel or change your reservation later.

6. Check Back a Week Before Your Trip To See if Prices Have Dropped

Finally, since you’re not locked into your reservation with a credit card, you have one more trick up your sleeve, and it’s one of Clark’s favorite travel tips.

“When I book my flight weeks or months before the actual date of travel, I also book my car rental at the same time,”  he says. “Then a week before my travel date, I re-shop the car rental rate. At least 90% of the time, I find that I can book a new car cheaper at the last minute, so I just let my old reservation go.”

Whether you don’t like flying or you want to enjoy the landscape, you might decide to travel by bus or train. If that’s your plan, here’s how to find the best deals.

Bus Tickets

clark charter and travel

There are a number of internet resources for booking bus tickets. Go online to the following bus travel sites:

  • Wanderu : This transit website and app specialize in affordable bus and train fares (but also offers flights and hotels) in North America and Europe.
  • Gotobus.com : This lists ticket prices for bus rides, bus rentals and hotels. The Deals  tab has some of the most affordable bus tickets around.
  • CheckMyBus : CheckMyBus is a travel portal that claims it can save you up to 70% on average and offers the most bus routes worldwide.
  • Busbud : Busbud is well-regarded for its comprehensive search results and mobile app. The site, which shows routes in more than 63 countries, also has user-submitted travel reviews for every route. If you search online, you may even be able to find a discount code, which could save you up to 20% on selected travel routes.

Train Tickets

When it comes to domestic train travel, Amtrak is pretty much your only interstate choice. The rail carrier covers more than 21,000 miles across 46 states.

If you want to purchase train tickets at the lowest possible price, keep these things in mind:

  • Look for discount Saver and SmartFares: Saver Fares are usually web-only specials that require the advance purchase of tickets. SmartFares are weekly discounts that are typically used to fill up trains. The tickets are nonrefundable and subject to availability.
  • Seek out discounts: Amtrak offers 50% discounts for children , 10% for seniors , 10% for military personnel and their families and 10% for disabled adults and their companions.
  • Check out Amtrak’s Deals page: Amtrak’s Deals page often features buy-one-get-one-free specials and special prices on select routes.
  • Sign up for the rewards program: Join Amtrak’s Guest Rewards program , and not only will you get deals sent straight to your inbox, but you earn two points per dollar spent on Amtrak. You can redeem those points for upgrades and free travel.
  • Look for special offers at RailServe.com : It has an Amtrak coupons section .

Read more about how to save on domestic train tickets here.

For booking international rail travel, it’s hard to beat UK-based International Rail . Bookings can be made for 66,000 point-to-point routes in Europe, including on Eurostar, French TGV, German ICE, InterCity, EuroCity and Spanish high-speed trains. Rail bookings for other regions include Australia, New Zealand, Asia and South Africa.

How To Book a Cruise

clark charter and travel

During an episode of his podcast early this year , Clark warned about booking a cruise in 2022 because of still-changing conditions related to the COVID-19 pandemic. He cited the fact that, depending on COVID restrictions, some ports on your cruise might not allow passengers to disembark. He also pointed out that COVID protocols on some ships can make for a less than optimal cruising experience.

As the pandemic waxes and wanes, so does the availability of cruises and deals. “Now you have to do a lot more picking and choosing,” Clark says, adding that before you can find a good cruise deal, you need to make a couple of adjustments regarding your mindset and travel plans.

“You have to adjust to today’s reality and adjust  how you book  with the flexibility of the ship you go on, and particularly  when you sail to get the best deal,” he says.

It is important to check on current guidelines from the CDC and the policies of individual cruise lines before you book.

Keeping in mind all those caveats, Clark has three primary rules to follow when it comes to booking cruises.

1. Let the Calendar Save You Money

“There are certain cycles through the year when cruise lines have trouble filling all their cabins, and that’s when you steal the great deals,” he says.

So when is typically the best time to book?

“After Thanksgiving but before Christmas kicks off is a bargain time for any kind of travel — and cruises are right in the midst of that,” he says.

Comparison shopping will give you a better understanding of what prices should look like at certain times of the year.

One of Team Clark’s favorite sites for finding last-minute cruise deals is  VacationstoGo.com . (Note: We do not recommend that you book on this site , but it’s a good place to do research.) If you want to compare prices from multiple travel agencies, CruiseCompete.com can also be a good source.

2. Don’t Let Cruise Brand Loyalty Cost You More

Some people are really loyal to cruise line brands, but that can absolutely kill your budget.

Clark’s advice is when planning your trip, venture away from what you know and explore other companies and what they’re about: “Look at things like experimenting with cruise lines you’re not that familiar with.”

Clark does offer this one caution though: “Never book a deal on a cruise just because it’s a deal. You need to really be comfortable that that ship is going to fit your lifestyle, the things that you’re interested in.”

The price won’t matter much if you find yourself on a cruise ship that doesn’t mesh with your expectations. Do the research.

3. Read the Reviews

You should try to get a balanced view of the cruise lines and particular ships you’re interested in, so it’s best to read some reviews.

Clark recommends a site where you can take a deep dive into cruise ship specs as well as deals and booking tips.

“I’d love for you to spend time on CruiseCritic.com , reading about a ship before you book on that ship,” he says. “Additionally, you can look closely at the various individual cabins to make sure you don’t get in a cabin that’s going to be a problem because it’s in a noisy area of the ship, for example.”

Another really helpful tip is to ask family, friends and coworkers if they have any recommendations. And travel agents who specialize in cruises sometimes have the inside scoop on particular ships and itineraries.

Now more than ever, it is important to consider purchasing travel insurance because of the still-changing travel conditions related to COVID-19. There are many different types of travel policies available, but there are two types we recommend that will likely cover most of your needs.

The best policy is one that allows you to cancel for any reason. It happens to be called Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) insurance, and Clark says it’s great because it can you get at least most of your money back no matter why you decide not to make the trip.

Even before the pandemic, Clark recommended getting CFAR insurance for these four types of travel:

  • Embarking on a cruise
  • Booking a tour as part of your trip
  • Traveling on an itinerary that requires prepayment of thousands of dollars
  • Purchasing a trip that is non-refundable

“If you book a tour or you book a cruise — those two in particular — if you’re going to lose all your money regardless of why you can’t come, then you need to get insurance,” Clark says.

Clark recommends that you comparison shop for travel insurance that suits your needs at InsureMyTrip . It’s an aggregator site that helps you analyze all of the different choices available.

In addition to a CFAR policy, you may also want to consider travel medical insurance.

“The thing with international travel, which almost nobody knows until it’s a big problem, is that your health insurance usually doesn’t cover you outside the United States,” says Clark.

Read our full article on travel medical insurance here .

Travel the Clark Howard Way: Let the Destination Pick You

Over the years, Clark has used a trip-planning strategy that has allowed him to visit 49 states and almost every corner of the globe without spending a lot of money. His secret is surprisingly simple.

“My #1 rule of travel is buy the deal first and then figure out why you want to go there. By following that simple rule, I’ve been able to visit every continent except Antarctica and every state except North Dakota. And I’ve done it all on a dime.”

In order to accomplish this, Clark does three things that you can do, too.

1. Don’t Pick a Destination

How do you figure out where the deals are? Kayak Explore is a tool that lets you find great airfare deals that fit your budget.

You simply select how much you’re willing to pay and available destinations in your price range pop up on a world map. You can drill down further by season and month of travel.

Kayak Explore

2. Sign Up for Cheap Flight Services

Another way to approach the question of how to travel on the cheap is to sign up for any of a variety of cheap flight services. Clark likes and subscribes to all three of these to get the early word about the best airfare sales:

  • Going (formerly Scott’s Cheap Flights )
  • Dollar Flight Club

Going and Dollar Flight Club both operate on a freemium model. You can use a basic version of their services for free, but you have to pay to upgrade in order to access a more robust version of the service. Clark says the upgrade is worth it if you really love to travel.

3. Set Up Fare Alerts

Not everybody can be flexible and let the deal drive their travel plans all the time. If you have a place you know you need to go — maybe a wedding or a family reunion — your best bet is to set up fare alerts.

Fare alerts will let you know when the price on a particular route drops and by how much. This kind of pricing perspective can save you a lot of money.

“They’ll be able to give you historical averages, telling you this fare is lower than normal by X number of dollars,” Clark says.

Try setting up fare alerts on both Google Flights and Kayak to ensure you find the best deal.

Final Thoughts

Now that you have Clark’s advice for planning and booking a trip on a budget, you should be ready to pack your bags.

We know the process can be intimidating, especially when you’re going somewhere you’ve never been before. In fact, there are times when we recommend you consult a travel agent for help .

But for the majority of cases, if you follow the steps outlined above, you’ll be on your way to your next adventure without breaking the bank.

WNBA upgrades foul on Caitlin Clark by Chennedy Carter, fines Angel Reese for no postgame interview

The WNBA on Sunday upgraded Chicago Sky guard Chennedy Carter’s foul against Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark to a flagrant-1 violation after reviewing the play.

Carter gave a  shoulder shot to Clark  that knocked her to the floor before an inbound pass during the third quarter of Saturday’s  71-70 win  by the Fever. The officials called it an away-from-the-ball foul and didn’t review the play. It was deemed a common foul at the time.

“I wasn’t expecting it,” Clark said after the game. “It is what it is. It’s a physical game. Go make the free throw and execute on offense, and I feel like that’s kind of what we did.”

Carter didn’t answer questions about Clark or the play after the game.

The league fined Sky forward Angel Reese $1,000 for failing to make herself available to media after Saturday’s game. The WNBA also fined Chicago $5,000 for failing to ensure that all players comply with league media policies.

The league office may reclassify a flagrant foul or upgrade a foul to a flagrant one that isn’t called during the game. In addition, the league may impose a fine or suspend a player for a flagrant foul. The WNBA didn’t do either to Carter.

Players accumulate points for flagrant fouls during the regular season and receive suspensions if they reach a certain number.

Indiana coach Christie Sides praised Clark in her postgame interview Saturday for keeping her composure through all the physical play she’s faced this season.

“We’re just going to keep sending these possessions to the league, and these plays, and hopefully they’ll start, you know, taking a better look at some of the things that we see happening, or we think is happening,” she said. “Just more happy that Caitlin handled it the way she did. You know, it’s tough to keep getting hammered the way she does and to not get rewarded with free throws or foul calls. She’s continued to fight through that. Appreciate that from her. Really, really proud of her for doing that.”

Clark finished with 11 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Reese had eight points and 13 rebounds.

NEW YORK (AP) — The WNBA on Sunday upgraded Chicago Sky guard Chennedy Carter’s foul against Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark to a flagrant-1 violation after reviewing the play.

Carter gave a shoulder shot to Clark that knocked her to the floor before an inbound pass during the third quarter of Saturday’s 71-70 win by the Fever. The officials called it an away-from-the-ball foul and didn’t review the play. It was deemed a common foul at the time.

“I’m a competitor, and I’m going to compete no matter who you are, and no matter who’s in front of me. So that’s just what it was,” Carter said. “Heat of the moment play. We’re getting at it. We’re getting back and forth. It’s basketball. It’s all hoops. After we finish the game, it’s all love.”

Carter then went on to say she took exception to those criticizing her without watching the “whole game.”

“I’m seeing a lot of things — players, fans not understanding who I am as a player,” Carter said. “You have to understand me as a person, too. And don’t just look at one tape and form an opinion about me. I’m truly a passionate person about the game, and I’m genuine. You can ask all my teammates, they’ve gotten to know me. They know the real Chennedy Carter.

“So I’m just saying, don’t form an opinion off of one little clip. And you didn’t even see the whole game and/or the play that led to that.”

Chicago coach Teresa Weatherspoon said Monday that she talked to Carter about it.

“Physical play, intensity and a competitive spirit are hallmarks of Chicago Sky basketball. Chennedy got caught up in the heat of the moment in an effort to win the game,” Weatherspoon said in a statement. “She and I have discussed what happened and that it was not appropriate, nor is it what we do or who we are. Chennedy understands that there are better ways to handle situations on the court, and she will learn from this, as we all will.”

Also Sunday, the league fined Sky forward Angel Reese $1,000 for failing to make herself available to media after Saturday’s game. And the WNBA fined Chicago $5,000 for failing to ensure that all players comply with league media policies.

The league office may reclassify a flagrant foul or upgrade a foul to a flagrant that isn’t called during the game. In addition, the league may impose a fine or suspend a player for a flagrant foul. The WNBA didn’t do either to Carter.

“This league is awesome, it’s a physical league,” Indiana coach Christie Sides said before playing the New York Liberty on Sunday night. “That was a non-basketball play that needed to be called in that moment.”

Sides praised Clark in her postgame interview Saturday for keeping her composure through all the physical play she’s faced this season.

“She showed it last night,” the coach said. “Got up and kept playing. All she did was ask the officials to review it. They didn’t want to listen to it. I applaud her for how she handled it last night.”

Clark finished with 11 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Reese had eight points and 13 rebounds.

“I grew up playing basketball with the boys. It’s always been physical and feisty and you have to find a way to hold your own,” Clark said.

Chicago Sky | Column: A bad look for the Chicago Sky over a cheap shot — and not a lot of talk — against Caitlin Clark

Carter’s cheap shot against Clark during the third quarter of Saturday’s nationally televised game between the Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky became a trending topic on social media, was discussed during a “Good Morning America” segment on Sunday and helped make the Sky-Fever into a true rivalry.

Carter put a shoulder into Clark during an in-bounds play, knocking her down, and called her a name, according to lip readers. The play was not reviewed and was ruled an away-from-the-ball common foul.

Asked about it during a postgame news conference, Carter replied: “Next question .” Asked again, she said: “I ain’t answering no Caitlin Clark questions.” Asked what Clark had said, Carter said: “I don’t know.” Asked what she said to Clark, Carter responded: “I didn’t say anything.”

Sky coach Teresa Weatherspoon then stopped the questioning with a stern, “That’s enough. We’re good. She’s good.”

The reaction from the cheap shot was to be expected. Carter was widely criticized on social media, including some racist terminology used to describe her actions. And the narrative of Clark taking unnecessary flak from the rest of the WNBA players for taking the spotlight from everyone else gained steam, just after TNT’s Charles Barkley ripped the league’s players for being “petty” in their treatment of the new star.

After the huge outcry Saturday, the WNBA on Sunday reviewed the play and determined it was a Flagrant 1 foul . Too little, too late.

Either way, it was a defining moment for the WNBA, which now has a window of opportunity to get massive publicity with the NBA playoffs in an intermission before the NBA Finals begin Thursday. This kind of controversy can help fuel the league’s growth, as any publicity is good publicity.

Former NBA player and ESPN analyst Austin Rivers said it best in a video posted on social media  when he said the WNBA was unfairly ignored for years but is now treating Clark unfairly.

“Now this woman comes along and brings the world in, and is now giving you all the proper attention and respect,” Rivers said. “And you guys are getting these brand deals and getting this money. And instead of being appreciative and acknowledging that, you guys are like coming at her with these hate-ass comments, talking about ‘Oh, well, it’s not just because of her. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Last night our game was sold out and she didn’t play. Last night we flew a charter and she wasn’t on that flight.’

“Let’s stop it. It’s not a coincidence you guys are just now chartering flights her rookie year. It’s not a coincidence that now that she’s in the WNBA, everybody is paying attention to the WNBA. I shouldn’t say everyone, but a lot more people are. OK? It’s not a coincidence. It’s the Caitlin Clark effect .”

Clark is known to be a trash-talker, so perhaps she has to accept that many other players will be gunning for her all season long and she will be on the receiving end of some unnecessary physical contact.

But the jealousy from her fellow WNBA players for lifting the league into another stratosphere with her fame and talent level is obvious. And it’s reminiscent of when several NBA stars froze out Bulls rookie Michael Jordan during the 1985 All-Star Game in Indianapolis.

INDIANAPOLIS - FEBRUARY 10: Michael Jordan #23 of the Eastern Conference All-Stars takes a break during the 1985 NBA All-Star game against the Western Conference All-Stars at Market Square Arena on February 10, 1985 in Indianapolis, Indiana. The famous “freeze-out game,” reportedly engineered by Detroit Pistons star and Chicagoan Isiah Thomas, became part of the Jordan legend. His All-Star teammates kept the ball away from the Bulls rookie in an attempt to embarrass him and put him in his place, even as he was elevating the NBA to a higher level. Jordan’s performance in the slam dunk contest was considered “showboating.”

According to the Chicago Tribune report by Sam Smith , one writer from Detroit said, ”The attitude of the players was Michael Jordan will get star treatment when he learns how to act like a gentleman.”

During his Hall of Fame induction speech, Jordan sarcastically thanked Thomas, Magic Johnson and George Gervin for their participation in the freeze-out.

“They say it was a so-called ‘freeze-out’ in my rookie season,” Jordan said. “You guys gave me the motivation to say ‘You know what, evidently I haven’t proved enough to these guys. I gotta prove to them that I deserve what I’ve gotten on this level.’”

Jordan went on to do just that, and when he took a physical beating from the Pistons’ “Bad Boys” it steeled him in his drive to win championships and become the greatest player of all time.

Clark may not be like Mike. But like Jordan, she’s simply going to have to prove herself over and over again. No matter the complaints of her coach or the team’s owner, this treatment is probably not going to stop. Clark will be on the receiving end of flagrant fouls again. “Mean Girls” might be the updated version of the “Bad Boys.”

On a separate note, the lack of accountability from Carter after the game was unfortunate, and Weatherspoon’s unilateral decision to stop the questioning about an incident that happened during the game is unacceptable as well.

This is professional basketball, not college. Just answer the questions and stop acting petulant.

Sky rookie Angel Reese was fined $1,000 by the league on Sunday for failing to make herself available for postgame interviews. The Sky were also hit with a $5,000 fine for not having all players adhere to the WNBA media policy.

Reese apparently is fine with all the publicity she gets for her shoes or outfits or her appearance at the Met Gala . But she can’t talk about her first meeting against Clark?

Just a bad look for the Sky on Saturday. Don’t complain about a lack of media attention when you act like this.

Remember, the Sky-Fever game was scheduled for national TV because it featured the league’s two most recognized rookies — Clark and Reese. Like it or not, their rivalry from college will be part of their narrative forever, so deal with it.

Both teams are in rebuilding mode, so without Clark and Reese playing it would be like the NBA scheduling a nationally televised game between the Pistons and the Washington Wizards.

The rematch between the Sky and Fever in Indianapolis on June 16 will air nationally on CBS.

The ratings should be a smash.

Caitlin Clark’s rough weekend in the WNBA: What happened?

Caitlin Clark had a bit of a rough weekend.

On Sunday, the Indiana Fever rookie scored the fewest points and posted the lowest shooting percentage of both her 11-game WNBA career and her four-year career at Iowa during a blowout loss to the New York Liberty.

That came a day after Clark was knocked to the floor by the Chicago Sky’s Chennedy Carter with a hip check away from the ball — a sequence that appeared to draw an enthusiastic response from Sky rookie Angel Reese and later caused some observers to wonder when Clark’s teammates will start sticking up for her.

On the bright side, however, the Fever did win that game 71-70 for only their second win of the season. Clark had 11 points while making 36% of her shots (four for 11) on a night when her team made 39% of its shots while holding Chicago to 41%. Clark also had eight rebounds and six assists.

Caitlin Clark marketing boom is celebrated but also draws questions of race and equity

Caitlin Clark has attracted a new wave of support for WNBA players, but some question why veteran Black WNBA stars didn’t get the same boost.

May 20, 2024

“I thought earlier this season if we would have shot like this, we wouldn’t have won the game because we didn’t have that resiliency and we would have let it affect our defensive play,” Clark told reporters after the game. “So just proud of us, I thought we were really gritty.”

Clark’s weekend has sparked a lot of conversation, including a bizarre rant by Pat McAfee on his ESPN show Monday in which he described Clark with an offensive phrase while trying to defend her and her status in the WNBA. He has since apologized.

Here’s a recap:

What happened between Clark and Carter?

After making a jumper to pull the Sky to within 53-49 with 15.8 seconds remaining in the third quarter, Carter approached Clark — who was awaiting the inbound pass from Fever teammate Aliyah Boston — and gave her a hard bump to the hip .

Clark fell to the floor on the play, which was called as a common foul at the time but upgraded by the WNBA to a flagrant-1 violation the next day.

“I wasn’t expecting it,” Clark told reporters of the foul following her team’s one-point win. “It is what it is. It’s a physical game. Go make the free throw and execute on offense, and I feel like that’s kind of what we did.”

Said Sky coach Teresa Weatherspoon in a statement on Monday: “Chennedy got caught up in the heat of the moment in an effort to win the game. She and I have discussed what happened and that it was not appropriate, nor is it what we do or who we are. Chennedy understands that there are better ways to handle situations on the court, and she will learn from this, as we all will.”

Who is Carter and what did she say about the Clark incident?

Carter was selected fourth overall by the Atlanta Dream in the 2020 draft but was suspended for conduct detrimental to the team midway through her second season and traded to the Sparks before the 2022 season. She played 24 games for Los Angeles and was benched for poor conduct before being waived during the following offseason.

March 17, 2023

After taking a year off from the WNBA, Carter joined the Sky this season and is averaging 12 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.6 assists off the bench. Asked by a reporter after the game about her foul on Clark, Carter responded , “I ain’t answering no Caitlin Clark questions.”

Carter did have a bit to say on social media, though. In response to a Threads post showing video of her refusal to answer questions about Clark, Carter wrote , “& that’s that on that cause beside three point shooting what does she bring to the table man.”

On X, one user posted video of the play before Carter’s basket and subsequent foul on Clark, which appears to show Clark throwing an elbow toward Carter and Sky forward Isabelle Harrison in the back during a rebound attempt, then appearing to turn and say something to Carter. That post read, “And a little shove in the back......,” to which Carter replied , “yeah this the play lol.”

Carter did address the incident Monday, telling reporters during a joint interview with Reese after practice, “I don’t have any regrets.”

“I think I got hit in the head the play before and it was just like one of those things that was in the heat of the moment,” Carter said. “You know, I don’t know Caitlin. I don’t know her from anywhere. But at the end of the day, this is hoops. It’s competitive. This is basketball and you’re playing against somebody like me. I classify myself as a dog, so if you’re gonna throw a punch, then I’m gonna compete with you, I’m gonna play at the level you’re giving me. But that’s just the player that I am.”

She added: “I’m seeing a lot of things — players, fans not understanding who I am as a player. You have to understand me as a person, too, and don’t just look at one tape and form an opinion about me. I’m truly a passionate person about the game, and I’m genuine. You can ask all my teammates; they’ve gotten to know me. They know the real Chennedy Carter. So I’m just saying, don’t form an opinion off of one little clip. And you didn’t even see the whole game and/or the play that led to that.”

What’s the story with Reese and Clark?

The two WNBA rookies were rivals in college. Their teams — Clark’s Hawkeyes and Reese’s Louisiana State Tigers — played in the 2023 NCAA championship game, with LSU claiming a 102-85 victory. Late in the game, Reese was seen waving her hand and pointing to her ring finger in front of Clark, apparently showing the Iowa star where the championship ring would go. Clark reportedly made the same gesture toward an LSU player earlier in the game.

Earlier this year, Clark was drafted No. 1 overall by the Fever, while Reese was taken by the Sky at No. 7 overall. Last month, Reese tweeted, then deleted , a comment that was interpreted as a slam toward Clark and the idea that the WNBA’s surge in popularity and the league’s decision to allow charter flights for the first time this season can be credited to Clark alone.

Angel Reese is reminding fans that the WNBA’s recent surge isn’t about “just one person,” seemingly in response to LeBron James and Charles Barkley praising Caitlin Clark.

May 24, 2024

Saturday’s game was their first meeting as WNBA players. When Carter fouled Clark, Reese could be seen jumping from her seat on the Sky bench and applauding.

“my dawg fasho , got all my teammates,” Carter wrote on Threads about Reese’s reaction.

Reese also appeared to give Clark an elbow while boxing out during the fourth quarter. Clark fell to the floor on that play as well but has been called out by some fans for exaggerating the impact of the hit.

Reese, who finished the game with eight points and 13 rebounds, was fined $1,000 by the WNBA on Sunday for not making herself available for reporters after the loss to the Fever.

She told reporters Monday: “When we go out there and play super hard, compete every single day, it’s not personal. I promise you. It’s based off our stories and where we’ve come from. We’ve come from so many different places that you guys have never seen or would never understand. So just being able to go out there and play with that chip on our shoulder every single night, that’s just what we do and that’s just who we are, and you have to accept that.”

She added: “I’ll take the bad guy role. I’ll continue to take that on and be that for my teammates. And if I wanna be that, I know I’ll go down in history. I’ll look back in 20 years and be like, ‘Yeah, the reason why we’re watching women’s basketball is not just because of one person. It’s because of me, too.’ And I want you all to realize that — like, it’s not just because of one person. A lot of us have done so much for this game.”

What are others saying?

Matt Barnes , whose 15-season NBA career included four years with the Clippers and two with the Lakers, took to Instagram to call out Clark’s teammates for not having their star player’s back in such situations.

“I mean, throughout the season, she’s been getting beat up. Hard screens, elbows, knocked down,” Barnes said in a video posted Sunday. “It is what it is. She’s not the first, she won’t be the last. .... Where are the rest of the Indiana Fever at?

“I’ve seen a couple of girls smirk when she’s got knocked down, half-ass to pick her up. Like, y’all supposed to protect the asset, protect the star. And although this is a team, she’s the star. You always protect your star. I was someone who protected the stars .... And you wonder why you sit at the bottom of the league right now, it’s because y’all don’t protect each other, man.”

Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green suggested on Instagram that “Indiana better go invest in an enforcer ... FAST!” Clark’s boyfriend Connor McCaffery, a former Iowa basketball player, liked a pair of X posts that expressed the same sentiment.

Carter responded to that notion Sunday with an X post, telling all those who feel that way to “hoop or shut up.”

And then there was McAfee, who opened his show Monday with a lengthy, pro-Clark monologue that received a lot of attention — not for McAfee’s overall message, but because he called her “a white b—.”

Here’s the context:

“I would like the media people that continue to say, ‘This rookie class, this rookie class, this rookie class.’ Nah. Just call it for what it is,” McAfee said. “There’s one white b— for the Indiana team who is a superstar. …

“Is there a chance that people just enjoy watching her play basketball because of how electrifying she is? ... Maybe. But instead we have to hear people say that we all like her ‘cause she’s white. And she’s only popular because the rest of the rookie class is doing what they’re doing. ... What you have is somebody special and we’re lucky she’s here in Indiana.”

Later in the day, McAfee wrote on X that he should not have used the offensive phrase.

“No matter the context ... even if we’re talking about race being a reason for some of the stuff happening,” McAfee wrote. “I have way too much respect for her and women to put that into the universe. My intentions when saying it were complimentary just like the entire segment but, a lot of folks are saying that it certainly wasn’t at all. That’s 100% on me and for that I apologize… I have sent an apology to Caitlin as well. Everything else I said… still alllllll facts.”

ESPN declined to comment for this article.

What happened during Sunday’s game

In addition to her poor shooting night, Clark also pulled in just two rebounds while contributing five assists and two steals. She left the game early in the fourth quarter after hurting her left ear while getting bumped on a screen. She went to the locker room a few minutes later, but returned to the bench late in the game.

“I think collectively as a team, we understand who kind of the head of the monster is on that team and we are trying to just make everything tough and difficult,” Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu said after her team’s third game against Indiana this season. “Obviously, they came off a back-to-back, so it’s a little bit tough for them as well. But she’ll figure it out. It’s not that big of a deal to have a game like that.”

Asked about Clark’s performance after the game, Fever coach Christie Sides spoke generally about her players’ fatigue after opening the season with 11 games in 20 days.

“Their legs were shot. I mean, that’s where everything stems from, your legs, when you shoot the basketball — especially for threes,” Sides said. “They’re shot, they’re gassed, so everything was a little short.”

INDIANAPOLIS -- Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever secured their first home win of the season Saturday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, where a hard foul on the No. 1 WNBA draft pick drew widespread attention.

Clark and the Fever held on for a 71-70 victory over fellow rookie star Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky , whose fourth-quarter rally came up short. Chicago's Chennedy Carter scored a game-high 19 points off the bench but came under scrutiny late in the third quarter when she shoulder-checked Clark before the basketball was inbounded.

The play was not reviewed and was called an away-from-the-ball common foul, but the WNBA told ESPN on Sunday morning that Carter has now been assessed a flagrant 1 after a league review.

"I grew up playing basketball with the boys, so, like, it's always been physical and feisty and that's what it is," Clark said Sunday. "You gotta find a way to hold your own."

Fever coach Christie Sides took to social media after the game Saturday, calling Carter's foul on Clark "unacceptable" and asking the WNBA, "When will the consistent complaints be heard?!? Something has to be done!"

Chennedy Carter hits a jumper, then shoves Caitlin Clark to the floor.

Sides said during her postgame news conference that the Fever have been sending plays in which Clark has been "getting hammered" to the WNBA for review. She added that the team would probably do so again after Carter's foul.

"This league is awesome, it's a physical league," Sides said before Sunday's game vs. the New York Liberty . "That was a non-basketball play that needed to be called in that moment."

The league office may reclassify a flagrant foul or upgrade a foul to a flagrant 1 if it isn't called during the game, and can also impose a fine or suspend a player for a flagrant foul. The WNBA didn't do either to Carter.

When asked about the play after the game, Carter said, "Next question," and declined to address the foul.

Said Clark: "It is what it is. I feel like I'm just at the point where you accept it and don't retaliate. ... I'm trying not to let it bother me."

The WNBA announced Sunday that Reese has been fined $1,000 for failing to make herself available to media after the game. The league also fined the Sky $5,000 for failing to ensure that all players comply with league media policies.

Sides lauded Clark for keeping her composure through all the physical play this season.

"We're just going to keep sending these possessions to the league, and these plays, and hopefully they'll start, you know, taking a better look at some of the things that we see happening, or we think is happening," Sides said. "Just more happy that Caitlin handled it the way she did.

"You know, it's tough to keep getting hammered the way she does and to not get rewarded with free throws or foul calls. She's continued to fight through that. Appreciate that from her. Really, really proud of her for doing that."

After struggling on defense during its early-season funk, Indiana (2-8) put together its best effort on that end of the floor, overcoming shooting woes (39.1% from the field) as it held Chicago to a 40.6% clip and just 2-for-12 from the 3-point arc.

"We were connected defensively more than we've been all year," Sides said.

Saturday's contest served as both teams' first game in the Commissioner's Cup, the WNBA's in-season tournament.

The Fever led the majority of the contest, pulling ahead by as many as nine with 3:36 to play before the Sky used a late run to make it a one-point game with 1:35 left. Aliyah Boston 's clutch and-1 with 1:19 was the difference. Chicago's Marina Mabrey missed a critical free throw with 6.1 seconds remaining.

"I'm proud of our group," said Clark, who finished with 11 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. "I thought earlier in the season, to this point, if we would have shot like this, we wouldn't have won the game because we didn't have that resiliency and we would let it affect the defensive end for us. So just proud of us. We were really gritty on defense. Even when they were making runs, we always found a way to respond."

Clark became the first WNBA rookie to record 150 points, 50 rebounds and 50 assists in a 10-game span.

Sky rookie Kamilla Cardoso , the No. 3 pick, returned from a preseason shoulder injury to make her WNBA debut, scoring 11 points and corralling six rebounds in 18 minutes off the bench.

Two months ago, Clark and Cardoso faced off in the national title game, which Cardoso's South Carolina squad won. Cardoso is a former college teammate of the Fever's Boston (who finished with 10 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks) and played alongside former SEC foe Reese for the first time since they were drafted by Chicago in April. Clark and Reese's battles when they were at Iowa and LSU, respectively, garnered national headlines and record ratings and helped spur an uptick in interest and growth in women's basketball.

Saturday's contest was the Fever's 10th in 19 days, and they will travel to play New York on Sunday night. Their 11 games in 20 days marks the most games played in that long of a span since the Washington Mystics did it in 2011. After Sunday's contest, Indiana is off until Friday.

"Anytime you win, that makes everything a lot better," Sides said. "These guys, they're clawing and they're fighting. And that's all I can ask them to do. They did that till the end tonight, and they'll do it again tomorrow regardless of the competition."

CCSD trustees say regularly-absent Williams should give up her seat

Several Clark County School Board members, who claim Katie Williams no longer lives in the district, want her to relinquish her seat on the board.

Clark County School District trustee Katie Williams, right, appears at a school board meeting w ...

Five Clark County School District trustees have asked the district attorney to request that Trustee Katie Williams relinquish her seat, claiming that she no longer lives in her district as required by state law.

“We are very concerned and urge you to launch a thorough investigation into this matter,” states a copy of a letter addressed to Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson that was obtained by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Wolfson confirmed Monday afternoon that the matter was under investigation. He declined to comment further.

Two of the signees, elected Trustee Linda Cavazos and appointed nonvoting Trustee Ramona Esparza-Stoffregan, said the letter was sent via certified mail on Friday.

Cavazos said she has been unable to get an explanation for Williams’ physical absence from either the board’s president or its attorney. Board President Evelyn Garcia Morales did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

If Williams declines to relinquish her position, Wolfson could exercise his authority to declare the seat vacant, according to the letter.

“It is imperative that our elected officials adhere to the highest ethical standards and fulfill their duty to represent the interests of their constituents who entrusted them with their vote,” the letter states.

The letter is also signed by elected Trustee Brenda Zamora and appointed nonvoting trustees Dane Watson and Lisa Satory.

Williams described the letter to Wolfson as “political theater.”

“As a single working mother and citizen-Soldier, my schedule has certainly become difficult,” Williams said in a statement emailed to the Review-Journal. “Even while traveling for work, I make sure to continue to attend meetings and represent the best interests of the voters. The unelected appointees who are spearheading this political stunt are out of line; I’m putting them on notice now. I am not going anywhere, and I will finish the job that an overwhelming majority of District B voters sent me to do.”

The school district did not immediately return phone calls requesting comment. There are seven elected trustees and four appointed nonvoting trustees. The position pays $750 per month.

Remote meeting attendance

For at least the last three months, Williams has attended nearly all board meetings remotely rather than in person, Cavazos and Esparza-Stoffregan said in an interview. Williams also did not attend recent high school graduation ceremonies for schools in her district, requiring Cavazos and other trustees to fill in for her, Cavazos said.

In the past the board was informed if Williams, a member of the Nevada Army National Guard, was absent due to training, Cavazos said.

Williams had announced on social media that she had accepted a job with Nebraska-based Berry Law. A representative of the law office said Monday that Williams was at lunch but generally was in the office Monday through Friday.

Assessor’s records show that Williams name is still on the deed to a house in North Las Vegas that also has her ex-husband’s name on it.

Cavazos and Esparza-Stoffregan said they have heard from constituents in Williams’ District B concerned over her whereabouts.

“Because they are not getting a response, or they don’t feel she’s responding, then I’m getting their concerns, their issues, their solutions,” said Esparza-Stoffregan, who works in Williams’ district which includes North Las Vegas. “But why is she not responding?”

The letter to the district attorney states, “Transparency and accountability are essential for upholding the public’s trust in our democratic institutions, and we request that you take swift action to uphold the principles of this public office and the NRS (Nevada Revised Statutes).”

The letter also questions the legitimacy of recent votes taken by Williams because of questions over her residency. It notes that the board is in the midst of a search for its next superintendent.

Williams, who was elected to the school board in 2020, is not seeking re-election.

Caitlin Clark's Tough WNBA Debut Explained: Complains Opponents “Get Away With Things” As Suspension Threat Looms

I ndiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark has shown signs of frustration with the WNBA’s physical play during a rocky and very well-publicized start to her professional career.

Clark, who broke the NCAA record for most points scored across all of collegiate basketball, made her much-anticipated WNBA debut with the Fever on May 14, after being the No. 1 draft pick in April.

The Fever are off to a rough 2-8 start to the season, and after the Fever’s 71-70 win Saturday, Clark averag es 16.9 points per game, good for 16th in the league, and is still the betting favorite to win Rookie of the Year, according to FanDuel .

Clark has struggled with the physical defense she’s faced at the professional level and voiced frustration with the league’s officiating, telling reporters on Thursday “I feel like I’m getting hammered” and on Tuesday: “everybody is physical with me” and opponents “ get away with things that other people don’t get away with.”

She’s also shown frustration on the court, resulting in three technical fouls across only 10 games, most recently on Thursday when she got into a verbal altercation with the Seattle Storm’s Victoria Vivians.

After her debut drew more than 2 million viewers, the most in two decades, Clark has continued to lead a WNBA ratings boost, with multiple ratings records for WNBA games this week.

Some on social media have observed animosity throughout the league directed toward Clark—which was only reignited Saturday when the Chicago Sky’s Chennedy Carter appeared to shove Clark unprompted , drawing only a common foul.

Clark’s received some high-profile support from the likes of LeBron James and Charles Barkley , who both credited Clark for bringing fresh viewership and opportunity to the WNBA, with Barkley calling any WNBA critics “petty.”

Could Caitlin Clark Get Suspended?

In the WNBA, a player gets a one-game suspension after seven technical fouls —with an additional game added for every subsequent technical foul. Clark has three technical fouls in only nine games with three-quarters of the season remaining.

Is Caitlin Clark Responsible For The Wnba Getting Charter Flights?

The WNBA has committed $50 million over the next two years to provide its teams full-time charter flight service—ending the longtime norm of having teams fly commercial. Barkley, in his comments defending Clark, linked the charter flights to her arrival to the WNBA, saying, “y’all should be thanking that girl for getting y’all ass private charters, all the money and visibility she brings into the WNBA.” Clark’s popularity has indeed brought a boost to the WNBA, and a video of Clark arriving at the Dallas airport to fly commercial sparked fresh debate over the WNBA’s policy of not providing charter flights for every team. But the conversation began before Clark joined the league, with the WNBA Players Association long working with the league to put a plan in place. WNBA players have long voiced concern about safety for players—spurred even further after WNBA player Brittney Griner was harassed by a man at the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport last year.

Crucial Quote

Fever Coach Christie Sides similarly voiced frustration with officiating, claiming Thursday, “I feel like we need to get the same calls that are happening on the other end” and acknowledged Clark was “getting beat up” all game. Earlier in the week, however, she said players need to avoid sounding off against referees and let her do that on their behalf. She got her own technical foul on Thursday after arguing with a referee for failing to make a foul call during one of Clark’s drives. After Carter’s hit on Clark Saturday, Sides told the media the Fever have been regularly sending videos of players roughing up Clark to the league for review.

Chief Critic

Following Barkley’s comments, fellow rookie on the Chicago Sky Angel Reese appeared to take a swipe at Barkley, and possibly Clark. In a now-deleted post on X, Reese wrote following a Sky victory: “And that’s one getting a WIN in a packed area, not just cause of one player on our charter flight.” Reese and Clark were rivals in college.

Key Background

Clark’s rise to the WNBA has been widely credited with sparking fresh interest in professional women’s sports. Clark, a No. 1 draft pick, signed a four-year deal with the Fever valued at $338,056, which sparked discussion about the pay gap between men and women athletes. She’s also signed a $28 million endorsement deal with Nike.

"I ain't answering no Caitlin Clark questions," Carter said in her postgame presser.

"I think at this point, I know I'm gonna take a couple hard shots a game, and that's what it is," Clark said in her interview. "I'm trying not to let it bother me."

The two teams will next meet on Sunday, June 16 at 12 p.m. ET/9 a.m. PT in Indiana.

Who are the top WNBA players through the first month of 2024 season?

clark charter and travel

It’s been nearly one month since the WNBA season began and several players have emerged in that span.

Although it’s too early to tell who the MVP will be, there are several players emerging as legitimate candidates, including Las Vegas Aces center A’ja Wilson, Los Angeles Sparks center Dearica Hamby, and Phoenix Mercury wing Kahleah Copper.

This season also has brought one of the most closely watched rookie classes led by Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark. Alongside Clark, Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese and Los Angeles Sparks forward Cameron Brink have made an impact on their squads. Reese leads the league by a wide margin in offensive rebounds with 40. Brink is second in blocks with 23 and third in blocks per game with 2.6.

Here are some of the names that have emerged at the start of the season:

A’ja Wilson, Las Vegas Aces

The Aces haven’t been as dominant at the start of the season as last year’s championship team which lost just six games. Even with two losses on the season, Wilson is cementing herself as the best all-around player in the WNBA so far. She leads the league in several categories, including points per game (27.9), rebounds per game (12.4), field goals made (77), two-point field goals made (74), and total rebound percentage (20.7%). Wilson has been dominating defensively with 2.6 blocks per game, the second-best in the league.

Alyssa Thomas, Connecticut Sun

The Connecticut Sun have dominated the start of the season with a 9-0 start and are the WNBA’s only unbeaten team. The feat has been remarkable to watch, but even more remarkable is how well-rounded the team is. Thomas stands out as the main facilitator with a league-leading 8.8 assists per game. The forward has also averaged 9.3 rebounds per game and is once again an early MVP candidate.

Kahleah Copper, Phoenix Mercury

Copper introduced herself to the Mercury in a big way to start the season and averaged 31.3 points in her first three games. Since then, she’s cooled down but still is a leader for the Mercury’s offense. Copper leads the league in total points with 225 through 10 games. Copper has also gotten herself to the free-throw line 56 times this season and has made 45 free throws.

Dearica Hamby, Los Angeles Sparks

It hasn’t been the best start for the young Sparks team, but there’s no doubt that Hamby is handling the duties as the star well. Hamby is another well-rounded player, rebounding at a high level, while also shooting 3-pointers. Hamby leads with 104 total rebounds and is in the top five in points per game (20.4), rebounds per game (11.6), 3-point field goal percentage (50.0%), and field goals (70).

Arike Ogunbowale, Dallas Wings

One of the most dangerous shooters in the WNBA, Ogunbowale is averaging 27.1 points per game, the second-best in the league. She also leads with steals per game (3.0) and total steals (24). Ogunbowale has gotten herself to the free-throw line more than any other player with 60 trips and has made all but three.

Napheesa Collier, Minnesota Lynx

It's been a great start for the Lynx as they lead the Western Conference with a 7-2 record. Collier has been a major factor and has averaged 21.8 points per game and 11.0 rebounds per game. The forward has recorded a double-double in all but three games. She's also pocketed 22 steals and 14 blocks on the season. Her 75 field goals lead the best shooting team in the WNBA (46.2%).

Caitlin Clark, Indiana Fever

The Rookie of the Month recipient has gone through growing pains in her first taste of the WNBA, but she has made positive strides. Clark is third in 3-pointers made with 27 on the season. She also leads the league in attempts with 91. Clark has logged heavy minutes for the Fever, leading the league with 363 minutes. Clark is fourth in the league in assists per game (6.4). She leads all guards in blocks with 11 on the season.
