First Alert Traffic: Movie production closes roads in downtown Cleveland
Great Lakes Science Center
The textbook's kryptonite.
Why is the sky blue? Anyone who’s ever had a kid, known a kid or been a kid has probably heard this question a million times. The Great Lakes Science Center tackles fact-of-life doozies like this and, well, just about everything else.
It's time to impress your former high school lab partner (beyond just letting them copy your notes) at the Great Lakes Science Center. Create cloud rings out of water vapor. Use your fingertips to make light dance. Construct a parachute. Make music with flip-flops and pipes. Launch a rocket.
What You'll See:
- The Great Lakes Science Center permanent exhibits can teach you about Cleveland’s maritime history (the restored William G. Mather steamship), space exploration (the NASA Glenn Visitor Center), medicine (BioMedTech Gallery) and cool scientific concepts, like what 350,000 volts of static electricity does to your hair (Science Phenomena).
- In addition to the aforementioned permanent exhibits, the Science Center, whose motto is “stay curious,” also features an array of hands-on exhibits, traveling installations and a series of what it calls “out of the ordinary exhibits” that include introductions to nanotechnology, solar harnessing and wind power.
- The Science Center also is home to the Cleveland Clinic DOME Theater, the world’s first three-projector, laser-illuminated movie projection system, all shown on a screen that reaches six-stories high. The theater shows both educational films and a double-feature series called “Take Two!” that screens well-known Hollywood movies.
What Else to Do?
- Yuri's Night, the Science Center’s annual STEM fundraiser, is worth being in town for. Billed as “the best space party in Cleveland,” unless you’ve ever cracked a beer in space, it might be the best space party anywhere. A ticket to the 21-and-over event gets you open bar access and food from several local vendors. There’s live music, science trivia, interactive exhibits and a space-themed costume contest.

Zero Gravity Research Facility
The Zero Gravity Research Facility is NASA’s premier facility for ground based microgravity research, and the largest facility of its kind in the world. It provides researchers with a near weightless environment for a duration of 5.18 seconds.
Facility Overview
![cleveland nasa tour Drop vehicle and release mechanism](https://www1.grc.nasa.gov/wp-content/uploads/2004_00575_M-300x300.jpg)
The Zero Gravity Research Facility is NASA’s premier facility for ground based microgravity research, and the largest facility of its kind in the world. The Zero-G facility is one of two drop towers located at the NASA site in Brook Park, Ohio. The Zero-G facility has been operational since 1966. It was originally designed and built during the space race era of the 1960s to support research and development of space flight components and fluid systems, in a weightless or microgravity environment. The facility is currently used by NASA funded researchers from around the world to study the effects of microgravity on physical phenomena such as combustion and fluid physics, to develop and demonstrate new technology for future space missions, and to develop and test experiment hardware designed for flight aboard the International Space Station or future spacecraft.
The Zero-G facility provides researchers with a near weightless or microgravity environment for a duration of 5.18 seconds. Microgravity, which is the condition of relative near weightlessness, can only be achieved on Earth by putting an object in a state of free fall. NASA conducts microgravity experiments on earth using drops towers and aircraft flying parabolic trajectories. Allowing the experiment hardware to free fall a distance of 432 feet (132 m) creates the microgravity environment at the Zero-G facility.
The free fall is conducted inside of a 467 foot (142 m) long steel vacuum chamber. The chamber is 20 ft (6.1 m) in diameter and resides inside of a 28.5 ft (8.7 m) diameter concrete lined shaft, which extends 510 feet (155 m) below ground level. A 5 stage vacuum pumping process is used to reduce the pressure in the chamber to a pressure of 0.05 torr (760 torr = standard atmospheric pressure). Evacuating the chamber to this pressure reduces the aerodynamic drag on the freely falling experiment vehicle to less than 0.00001 g. To prepare for a drop, an overhead crane is used to position the experiment vehicle and release mechanism at the top of the vacuum chamber. Once in position, the drop vehicle is connected to the facility control room via an umbilical cable. This cable allows the experiment to be monitored and controlled from the control room until the release sequence is initialized. It takes approximately one hour to evacuate the vacuum chamber. Once the chamber is evacuated the release sequence is initiated. Remotely fracturing a specially designed bolt allows the experiment to begin its 132 meter free fall. During the drop the experiment operates autonomously with all experiment power, data acquisition, and control functions located on the freely falling experiment vehicle.
![cleveland nasa tour Experiment on the 'H' drop vehicle](https://www1.grc.nasa.gov/wp-content/uploads/2004_00585_M-300x300.jpg)
After falling for just over 5 seconds the experiment vehicle is stopped in the decelerator cart, located at the bottom of the chamber. The decelerator cart is 11 foot ( 3.3 m) in diameter and nearly 20 ft (6.1 m) deep. It is filled with 1/8” (3 mm) diameter expanded polystyrene beads. These beads dissipate the kinetic energy of the 2500 lb. experiment vehicle, which is traveling at about 113 mph (50.5 m/s) when it enters the decelerator cart. The experiment vehicle is stopped in about 15 feet (4.6 m) of expanded polystyrene and experiences a peak deceleration rate approaching 65g.
The experiment drop vehicle serves as a load bearing structure and protects the experiment hardware from the shock loads experienced during the deceleration. The typical drop vehicle used is cylindrical in shape. It is 42” in (1 m) diameter and has and overall length of 13 ft (4.0 m). The drop vehicle gross weight is limited to a maximum of 2500 lbs (1130 kg).
Quick Facts
- Take a virtual tour of our Zero Gravity Research Facility.
- The Zero Gravity Research Facility provides a near weightless or microgravity environment for a duration of 5.18 seconds. This is accomplished by allowing the experiment vehicle to free fall, in a vacuum, a distance of 432 feet (132 m). The facility can provide a microgravity test environment for a fraction of the cost conducting an experiment in space and provides the best gravity levels of any of NASA’s ground based low gravity facilities.
- Experimental Drop Vehicles used in the Zero-G Facility can accomodate payloads up to 1000 lbs (455 kg).
- The free fall is conducted inside of a 467 foot (142 m) long steel vacuum chamber. Chamber pressure is reduced to 0.05 torr (760 torr = standard atmospheric pressure).
- The Zero-G facility was originally designed and built during the space race era of the 1960s to support research and development of space flight components and fluid systems, in a weightless environment.
- Microgravity, which is the condition of relative near weightlessness, can only be achieved on Earth by putting an object in a state of free fall. NASA conducts microgravity experiments on earth using drops towers and aircraft flying parabolic trajectories.

The Rolling Stones in Cleveland: Here's What We Saw
It had been more than 20 years since The Rolling Stones last played in Cleveland when the English band finally hosted a massive rock show at Cleveland Browns Stadium on Saturday night.
The band's Hackney Diamonds tour supports its 24th album, but the show featured six decades' worth of hits, including "Gimme Shelter," "Paint It Black," "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" and "Start Me Up."
RELATED: The Rolling Stones Brought Decades of Rock 'N' Roll to Cleveland Browns Stadium: Review
And the Stones are still rocking as much now as ever — even as their current tour is sponsored by AARP, the American Association of Retired Persons . Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, both 80 years old, and Ronnie Wood, 77, had plenty of energy onstage, and certainly got the-sold out crowd moving.
Though it had been a while since Northeast Ohio welcomed the Stones, take a look back to their big 1975 stop in this Cleveland Magazine article .
Check out the setlist, plus more photos from the show, below.

Wildlife 'tourons' put themselves and animals in danger
![cleveland nasa tour](https://x-default-stgec.uplynk.com/ause/slices/5a6/e63aadb6928b4cd6ab0dec6fb3cddabd/5a68880725fc45e4921075711eb77326/poster_2d0fb95e65014e3a952bcbba94bf5704.png)
They pop up in social media feeds all the time — examples of people getting too close to wild animals in places like national parks, sometimes leading to serious injury or worse.
There's the two men who sauntered up to a pair of wild bison for a photo at Yellowstone National Park — or the woman who was charged by a bull on a beach in Mexico.
Or the elk in Estes Park Colorado who wasn't wild about a man getting too close to take a photo.
They are sometimes called "tourons," a mashup of tourist and moron: people risking their safety for a selfie. Accounts have popped up on social media documenting the phenomenon.
On Instagram , the National Park Service even poked fun at what they say is a serious problem, writing: "Believe in yourself like visitors who believe they can pet a bison."
"A lot of people really appreciate and love wildlife. They just don't know how to interact appropriately," says Colorado Parks and Wildlife District Wildlife Officer Dawson Swanson.
On his beat in Colorado's wilderness areas, Swanson has seen it all when it comes to potentially dangerous human-wildlife interactions.
"There's a lot of folks who feel like the rules just don't apply to them, you know? And so then they'll kind of push the envelope, get closer," Swanson told Scripps News.
Related Story: 4-legged robot to help deter wildlife strikes at Alaska airport
Like the people who pulled two bear cubs from a tree in Asheville, North Carolina. Messing with baby animals, Swanson says, can be especially dangerous.
"Wildlife doesn't abandon their young." Swanson says. "And if you do try to interact and pick them up or whatever, they can act very aggressively to defend them."
If a human is attacked, injured or killed, Swanson says it can also be deadly for the animal. In the interest of public safety, Swanson says the animal will most likely be killed.
"The animal is doing what they're naturally supposed to be doing, and that is protecting the young. And so we've put them in a tough situation. And the unfortunate outcome might be it might cost them their lives for doing what is natural to them," he says.
Swanson says "tourons" sometimes learn the lesson too late.
"They're still a wild animal, even if they look docile," Swanson says. "The best option is just to give them their space back off, and view them from a distance."

Family suing NASA after space debris from ISS crashed through their home

NAPLES, Fla. (WJW) – A Florida family is suing NASA after space debris from the International Space Station crash through their roof earlier this year.
The cylindrical metal object hit Alejandro Otero’s home in Naples on March 8. His son, who was home at the time, found the space junk had torn through the roof and damaged the floor.
![cleveland nasa tour](https://fox8.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/12/2024/04/AP24106824103139-e1713317016221.jpg?w=800)
After the crash, the object was taken to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
In a blog post , NASA later confirmed the object was part of flight support equipment used to mount batteries on a cargo pallet.
NASA ground controllers used a robotic arm on the International Space Station to release the cargo pallet after new lithium-ion batteries were installed. The blog post said, although the hardware was supposed to burn up in the atmosphere, a piece of the space junk made it to Earth and struck the Florida home.
NASA officials confirmed the object, made of alloy Inconel, was 1.6 pounds, 4 inches in height and 1.6 inches in diameter.
An attorney representing Otero’s family submitted a claim to NASA in May, the law firm announced Friday , seeking recovery from damages caused by the crash.
“The damages for the Otero family members include non-insured property damage loss, business interruption damages, emotional/mental anguish damages and the costs for assistance from third parties required in the process,” the law firm said in a press release.
Attorney Mica Nguyen Worthy is calling the lawsuit the first of its kind as a “real life example” of what can happen if space debris makes it to the Earth’s surface.
“My clients are seeking adequate compensation to account for the stress and impact that this event had on their lives,” said Worthy. “They are grateful that no one sustained physical injuries from this incident, but a ‘near miss’ situation such as this could have been catastrophic. If the debris had hit a few feet in another direction, there could have been serious injury or a fatality.”
FOX 8 reached out to NASA for a statement.

Holy Moses Cleveland did autocrossers have an exciting time at the June 21-23, 2024, Tire Rack SCCA® Cleveland Solo® National Tour experience at the I-X Center in Northeast Ohio. A site located alongside Cleveland Hopkins International Airport – and just a stone’s throw from NASA’s Glenn Research Center – more than 140 participants joined together and fired things up hotter than a Cuyahoga River blaze.
Friday night’s welcome party, hosted by SCCA’s Neohio Region, was a complete hit thanks to plenty of food and beverages. Plus, a karting competition kept attendees playing well into the night.
Saturday was very hot and humid, with temperatures reaching the low 90-degree mark. But that didn’t slow people down when it came to attacking fun, fast, and flowing courses designed by Jonathan Stagg at the large asphalt site with plenty of paddock and grid space.
Sunday was much cooler, with clouds and a breeze opening the day in what would be considered wet with drying conditions. From there, however, there were some light showers throughout the day, which created changing conditions to challenge competitors.
Megan DePietro, who drove a Porsche GT4 in the Super Street Prepared Ladies class, had a unique experience over the weekend thanks to the SCCA Women on Track Driver Development Program. That initiative aids one randomly selected woman at each Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Tour and ProSolo® Series event with an opportunity for a one-on-one, 30-minute virtual coaching session with a top-tier driver from the sport – which was John Vitamvas last weekend in Cleveland.
This level of coaching is aimed at helping drivers meet their performance driving goals. DePietro put the new skills to work, posting times over two days that would’ve earned her the runner-up spot in the Super Street Prepared class at the I-X Center.
Competitors Rocked ‘N’ Rolled in Ohio
D Street (DS) was the largest class in Cleveland with 17 drivers and provided lots of excitement. Tom O'Gorman, driving a 2021 Honda Civic Type R, took the victory by 1.260sec over runner-up DJ Alessandrini in a 2023 Toyota GR86. Alessandrini’s co-driver, Peter Schnore, finished third. Dave Potocki was fourth in another 2023 Toyota GR86, and Todd Kunze earned the fifth and final DS trophy behind the wheel of a 2024 Hyundai Elantra N.
C Street (CS) was also a nailbiter as Andrew Ferrara, in a 2019 Mazda Miata, made an exciting final run Sunday with the hope of improving on his fourth-place position. He met his goal, ending up the CS runner-up to Andrew Pallotta in a 2023 Mazda MX-5. Kent Weaver got the third and final trophy driving another 2023 Mazda MX-5.
The five-driver D Street Ladies class was equally fun to watch as Emily Brown came home victorious in a 2023 Hyundai Elantra N. Emily Whitaker, driving a 2022 Toyota GR86, claimed the runner-up trophy.
And speaking of ladies, Olivia Hammac excelled in Cleveland by taking the top spot in Super Street driving a 2020 Lotus Evora. That was her very first win in an open class at a National event.
The Street Touring® Hatch contest resulted in one of the closest finishes of the weekend. Driving a 2016 Audi TT, Thomas Kring earned the win by 0.033sec over Andrew Nienhuis in a 2016 Volkswagen GTI.
F Street Prepared, with its eight entrants, saw Caleb Pardus emerge victorious in a 1998 Dodge Neon. He was 0.427sec faster than runner-up Steve Mieritz’ 1986 Honda CRX, who DNF’d on his sixth and final run. Calvin Owens grabbed the third and final trophy in a 2008 Honda Civic Si.
Something unique for the weekend was inclusion of a special class run locally in Northeast Ohio. Neohio’s Leroy Miata Cup (LMC) had 23 drivers, all piloting Miatas of different styles, and the newcomers seemed to fall in love with National-level competition. Bryan Nells won that class, and Ryan McDonald was the runner-up. Ryan Hiler was third, Andrew Mercer fourth, Jonathan Staggs fifth, and Charles White sixth. The seventh and final trophy then went to Joe Murphy.
