Author Freddy Sherman visited Sri Lanka and spent time seeing the sights of Columbo.

Sri Lanka's capital city of Colombo seamlessly combines the incredible culture and history of the island with modern tourist attractions and amenities. The city's unique colonial history (Portuguese, Dutch, and British) adds additional layers to the mix. As the country's capital city, it's also filled with museums and places to visit that illustrate Sri Lanka's rich history.

Too many visitors merely land in Colombo and head directly to one of the country's resort areas. Spend a day or two in the capital, and you'll be rewarded with a deeper understanding of the island's culture.

Beira Lake and the Colombo skyline

The main central business district area is known as Fort, and that's where you'll find a lot of the best places to visit in Colombo like government buildings, museums, luxury shopping, and large hotels. The area is named for the original Portuguese fort, which guarded the harbor area. Directly in front of Fort is the Galle Face Green, a large oceanfront park.

Plan your sightseeing in Sri Lanka's capital with our list of the best places to visit in Colombo.

Lotus Tower, Colombo

One of the coolest (and highest) places to visit in Colombo is also one of the city's newest things to do. The Colombo Lotus Tower is South Asia's tallest freestanding structure (368 meters/1,168 feet), and a trip to the top rewards visitors with unobstructed views across Colombo and the surrounding cityscape and sea.

The tower, which houses a lot of telecommunications equipment, has an e-sports arena and a 5G VR Innovation Center, a shopping mall (at the base), a revolving fine dining restaurant, and indoor and outdoor observation areas. The tower is also a sight to see from the outside — it's covered in LED lighting and presents seasonal-themed lighting displays each night.

The Lotus Tower, also called the Nelum Kuluna, is designed to replicate a lotus bulb and flower, simultaneously representing the historic culture of the country and its focus on the future.

National Museum of Colombo

The National Museum of Colombo , also called the Sri Lanka National Museum, is the official museum of Sri Lanka and takes you on a journey over the thousands of years of Sri Lankan culture.

It's one of those museums that has multiple types of media, from artwork to artifacts, as well as clothing, jewelry, coins, arms, and craftwork. The displays show both the cultural and natural heritage of the country, presented chronologically, starting with pre-history and leading to the present day.

The Sri Lanka National Museum was started in 1877 during the colonial period by the governor of the island, which was then a British territory called Ceylon.

Give yourself a few hours to fully explore the collections. The museum is housed in its original, grand purpose-built Victorian colonial building in central Colombo near Viharamahadevi Park.

Sri Lanka's first (and only) planetarium can be a fascinating way to escape the hot sun. The Sri Lanka Planetarium is located at the University of Colombo . There's a public entrance across from Independence Square. The large auditorium has 570 seats with a domed ceiling, and the night sky and its constellations are projected onto it.

Aside from the exhibits and programming, the structure itself is architecturally striking and a must-do for Instagram. The lotus flower design shares elements with iconic modernist cathedrals in Liverpool, England, and Brazil.

The Sri Lanka Planetarium is open from 8am to 4pm every day except Mondays. 90-minute public shows are presented on Saturdays at 10am and 2pm, and tickets are less than $1. In addition to the planetarium, there's an outdoor Science Activity Park where kids can play and learn about space exploration and travel.

Golden Buddha statue in Viharamahadevi Park

This giant green space is Colombo's Central Park (and one of its only large open-space areas) and provides areas to relax and enjoy (or escape from) the sunshine. Now named for one of the country's ancient queens, the park was formerly called Victoria Park. Viharamahadevi Park sits between the National Museum of Colombo and City Hall.

The are many fountains in the park, as well as a small zoo . Kids will enjoy the playground. You can visit the Cenotaph War Memorial (a monument dedicated to Sri Lankan soldiers killed in both world wars), as well as the Columbo Public Library , both of which are located in the park. The park is also home to a large, 15-foot-tall Buddha statue , the largest cast brass Buddha statue in the country.

There is a very nice walking path around the perimeter of the park — a lap is about a half-mile (1 kilometer). There are snack stands along the route to get some food and lots of benches and areas to sit and relax. Another fun thing to do is to rent a bicycle and ride on the many designated bike paths.

Bathing elephants at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage

Formally known as the Dehiwala Zoological Gardens , the city's large Colombo Zoo is located in the Dehiwala area. More than just animals in cages, the zoo focuses on education, as well as animal conservation and welfare. One of the oldest zoos in Asia , it's home to almost 3,000 different animals of all shapes and sizes. The zoo has daily demonstrations with keepers of various animals.

The Columbo Zoo is open seven days a week, from 8:30am to 6pm. In addition to the urban zoo in Dehiwala, in the city of Pinnawala, about two hours outside of Colombo, there is a larger wildlife park, the Pinnawala Zoo and the Pinnawala Elephant Sanctuary , both operated by the country's Department of Zoological Gardens.

Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre

This large, modern performing arts complex hosts a wide range of music, dance, and cultural performances. It was recently renamed for the country's former president, Mahinda Rajapaksa. Like many other things in Sri Lanka, the design is intentionally reminiscent of a lotus flower, and the name, "Nelum Pokuna" means lotus pond in the local Sinhala language.

Programming at the Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre includes symphony performances and opera (Chinese, Sri Lankan, and Western). They also do modern pop concerts . Performances are given in the main auditorium or in the open-air amphitheater. The theater is in central Colombo, across from Viharamahadevi Park.

The theater's schedule can be viewed online, and tickets can be purchased online as well. It's a cool place to visit in Colombo because regardless of what you go to see, you'll find yourself surrounded by locals.

Colonial hotel on Mount Lavinia Beach

Sri Lanka's main beach resort town , Mount Lavinia is a suburb of Colombo. There are many hotels here, and it can be a good alternative to staying in the city. It's an easy 30-minute drive from downtown Colombo (or a 15-minute train ride) and a fun way to spend an afternoon or a few days.

The main stretch of beach is known as the Golden Mile, and it's filled with tourist-focused businesses, as well as an active nightlife scene. Mount Lavinia has also become popular as an LGBTQ+-friendly area, hosting an annual Pride-themed Rainbow Kite Festival in June.

Use caution when swimming as the beach is not a protected bay, so the water can be very rough during certain times of the year. There are some very nice restaurants along the beachfront promenade, and the beach itself is filled with vendors selling everything from food to bathing suits. If you stay at the beach past 6pm, you'll be rewarded with an incredible sunset view.

There is much history to explore here as well. Be sure to stop in the Mount Lavinia Hotel , built in the early 19th century as the governor's mansion, now a classic, colonial grande dame luxury hotel.

National Museum of Natural History

Located right near the Colombo National Museum, across from Viharamahadevi Park in central Colombo, the National Museum of Natural History showcases the country's incredible flora and fauna.

Plants, insects, fish, amphibians, and animals are displayed, exclusively those that are endemic to the country. Many rare animals shown are threatened with extinction. Aside from plants, there are many displays of rocks and minerals, also those that are native to the island.

In addition to the animals and plants, there are skeletons and fossils of ancient and extinct creatures including dinosaurs. The museum is one of the best places to visit in Columbo for families and kids.

Gangaramaya Temple

This Buddhist temple complex was constructed in the late 19 th century. The temple is a place of worship but also looks to educate people about Buddhism. It's also like a museum, as it showcases a lot of physical items, from jewelry to coins and even a vintage Rolls-Royce.

You can also view the temple's most sacred religious relic, a lock of the Buddha's hair, as well as a sacred tree around which the temple was built. Visit during the February full moon (called "Poya") to see the Gangaramaya Temple's annual colorful religious ceremony, which includes a procession led by the temple's elephant.

The temple complex is in central Colombo not far from Bere Lake.

If you have kids and you're visiting Colombo, this compact amusement center needs to be on your itinerary. The Excel World Entertainment Park is a fun local experience with a shopping mall, a few rides, a bowling alley, an arcade, and a food court . There's also a movie theater (showing Western and Bollywood films). The bowling alley is especially popular, as it's the only one in Colombo.

Things to do at the park include laser tag, a carousel, bumper cars, and a bounce house. If you visit during December, the mall is known for bringing in snow to create an indoor winter wonderland called Snow World. It's the only place in Sri Lanka to celebrate a White Christmas, complete with Santa Claus.

Excel World is right next to Beira Lake.

Galle Face Green

This large, oceanfront park area is where many Sri Lankans go to play on the beach. The park is between Galle Road and the Indian Ocean, right in the heart of Colombo next to the Fort area.

It's the largest open space in the city and has 500 meters of beach, along with a beachfront promenade filled with vendors . Colombo's hot sunshine means this is also a popular area for night fun — Saturday and Sunday nights are the best times to visit.

You can wade in the water, picnic on the beach, or fly a kite in the ever-present wind. It's a fun place for families, and it's also good for running.

Colombo Dutch Museum

Colombo's colonial history (it's been a British, Dutch, and Portuguese colony at different times) contributes so much to its current culture. You can learn all about the Dutch influence and history of the island at the Colombo Dutch Museum . The collection includes artifacts, artwork, and furniture, as well as arms and militaria. There is information in English.

The museum building was built in the late 17 th century as the official residence of the Dutch governor. The collection highlights the almost 200-year history of Dutch control of the island's coastal areas, from 1640 to 1796. The island, then known as Ceylon, served as a key stop in Holland's world trade, as it sat on one of the important east-west shipping routes of the country's Dutch East India Company.

Pettah Floating Market

Starting around the year 2000, this formerly industrial area of Colombo was redeveloped into a thriving floating market with almost 100 vendors. Pettah is in central Colombo, about a five-minute drive from Fort.

The floating market is along a canal, lined with sidewalks and wooden boardwalks. They both line and cross the canal, making it a fun area for shopping, strolling, and people-watching. There is great street food here as well. It's also a fruit and vegetable market. You can buy clothes, crafts, jewelry, and even electronics like phones.

Pettah Floating Market is open from 8am to 8pm; sunset is a great time to visit and for photos (about 5pm).

Red Mosque, Colombo

While you're in the Pettah area, visit the city's incredible Red Mosque, known formally as the Jami Ul-Alfar Masjid. It was built in the early part of the 20 th century and makes quite a statement with its red and white stone minarets, topped with onion- and pomegranate-shaped domes. They tower over the area, and the domes give the building an almost Russian feel to it, architecturally. The style is called "Indo-Saracenic."

The mosque is near the port, and its contrasting red and white colors made it a visual landmark for arriving ships. It's especially interesting, as the red and white bricks are arranged in different patterns. Some swirl, some spiral, and other areas have alternating colors with a near optical illusional effect.

Visitors, both men and women, are welcome to visit the mosque.

Colombo cemetery

Cemeteries can be interesting places to visit, as they permanently document the local culture. Kanatte is the city's main cemetery and was opened in the mid-19 th century. It has a fascinating mix of memorials, representing all religions and beliefs. Each has its own section, and each has their own style of physical memorials.

The cemetery is also a popular place to visit for science fiction fans, as it's the final resting place of iconic sci-fi writer Arthur C. Clarke ( 2001: A Space Odyssey ). Clarke was born in Sri Lanka when it was a British colony and later retired here.

The cemetery is in the Borella area, just south and east of central Colombo.

Footbridge on Bere Lake

Another one of Colombo's most popular places to picnic, relax, and go boating or running is Bere Lake. This man-made lake (not to be confused with its larger neighbor, Beira Lake) is surrounded by a lot of green space, yet it's right in the middle of the city.

The area is also filled with jogging paths, and it's a great place for running and biking. There are swan boats you can rent and paddle your way around the lake. There are some snack shops and a floating, fine-dining restaurant. The restaurant is on a boat and floats around during a dinner cruise.

Bere Lake has its own island (connected by a suspension footbridge). The island is a popular spot for couples to take romantic walks. Elsewhere in the lake, there's a small Buddhist temple (Gangarama Seema Malaka) set into the water on several piers. The lake is a great location to take photos, especially at night. You have a beautiful, outdoor environment with the skyline of Colombo as the backdrop.

National Railway Museum

Train buffs and trainspotters will want to visit this open-air museum in Central Colombo, near the city's main Maradana Railway Station. While there is the larger National Railway Museum in Kadugannawa, near Kandy, this original one in Colombo has a respectable collection of carriages, rolling stock, and locomotives, including many steam engines.

The museum is open every day from 9am to 4pm, closing on holidays.

21+ Best Places To Visit In Colombo In 2024

  • Last Updated: April 8, 2024
  • Asia , Destinations , Sri Lanka

If you’re looking for the best places to visit in Colombo, you’ve come to the right place. Here I’ll be sharing my top picks, including the main sights, a few hidden gems, and some of my favourite food spots in the city.

Colombo is Sri Lanka’s commercial capital and largest city. It’s overlooked by the majority of tourists and foreign visitors. However, I think this is a shame as there’s actually a lot to see and do there.

Colombo offers some of the best food in the country. It has a wealth of historical and cultural attractions and several beautiful landmarks. It’s also much cheaper than many of the main tourist destinations in Sri Lanka.

I recently spent almost a week in Colombo and had a great time. I honestly wasn’t expecting to like Colombo anywhere near as much as I did!

Table of Contents

Top Places to Visit in Colombo, Sri Lanka

From historic monuments to trendy bars and bustling markets, let’s explore some of the best places to visit and things to do in Colombo.

Note: Virtually everyone I met in Colombo spoke good English. But, it’s still worth learning a few words and phrases in Sinhala , even if it’s only “hello” and “thank you”. You’ll be greeted with an even bigger smile.

1. Independence Square

Independence Square is a symbolic landmark in Colombo, commemorating Sri Lanka’s independence and freedom from British rule in 1948.

The square is anchored by the majestic Independence Memorial Hall, a grand stone edifice that honours national heroes and echoes the strength and resilience of the Sri Lankan people.

In the basement of the Memorial Hall lies the small but interesting Independence Memorial Museum.

Dedicated to Sri Lanka’s struggle for independence, the museum showcases a range of poignant artefacts, documents, and photographs.

In addition to its historical gravitas, Independence Square is a popular retreat for locals – joggers, families, and anyone seeking a tranquil escape amidst the city.

The well-manicured gardens, with their meandering paths and lush greenery, offer a serene backdrop perfect for a leisurely stroll or a moment of reflection.

When I visited Independence Square, the harmony of historical reverence and present-day leisure really struck me.

People of all ages were enjoying the space – sitting on the steps, lounging on the grass, basking in the serene environment. It’s a living, breathing place where the past and present of Sri Lanka coexist beautifully.

Location: 7 Independence Ave, Colombo

2. Galle Face Green

Galle Face Green is a long open space in Colombo, located just south of the bustling Fort area, next to the Indian Ocean.

It’s one of the most iconic locations in Colombo and a popular gathering place for families and friends of all ages, especially towards the end of the day.

You’ll find an array of street food vendors here, each offering a taste of local flavours. The sea breeze and rhythmic waves create a relaxed backdrop, perfect for unwinding.

On weekends, the atmosphere buzzes with the energy of picnickers and performers, transforming it into a hub of entertainment.

Galle Face Green has a long coastal promenade offering views of the Indian Ocean. Sunsets here are spectacular due to its west-facing aspect.

The sight of the Galle Face Hotel , built in 1864, adds a touch of historic elegance.

I loved watching people flying kites here in the strong ocean breeze. I was utterly mesmerised by the many kites dancing and racing in the sky, with their vibrant colours and intricate designs.

This place has a wonderful atmosphere, don’t miss it from your Colombo itinerary.

Location: Galle Face Green, Colombo

3. Colombo Fort

Colombo Fort is the central business district. Grand colonial-era buildings stand shoulder to shoulder with sleek modern skyscrapers, creating a striking contrast. It’s a bustling hub that tells the story of Colombo’s evolution.

Strolling through the streets, you’re taken back in time with landmarks like the old Parliament Building and the President’s House. These buildings exude old-world elegance, a stark reminder of the city’s colonial history.

As well as its historical sites, Colombo Fort boasts some of the city’s most luxurious hotels and restaurants.

A personal favourite spot of mine is the Dutch Hospital area (see below for more on this). Once a working hospital during the Dutch colonial era, it’s now a beautifully restored complex. It buzzes with life, housing trendy shops and eateries.

Location: Fort, Colombo

4. Gangaramaya Temple

Gangaramaya Temple is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Colombo, Sri Lanka. It was started by the renowned scholar monk Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Nayaka Thera in the late 19th century.

The temple has evolved from a small worship site into an institution of international recognition, thanks to the efforts of successive chief incumbents.

Today, Gangaramaya serves not only as a place of worship but also as a seat of learning and a cultural centre.

Nestled near Beira Lake, this temple is a melting pot of architectural brilliance, showcasing a fusion of Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian, and Chinese influences.

The interior is a gallery of Buddhist statues, each telling a story of faith and tradition. The temple complex extends its reach beyond spirituality, featuring a museum, a well-stocked library, and educational facilities.

You’ll see devotees lighting incense sticks, making offerings at altars, chanting, or ringing bells. These are all ways in which people express their devotion and seek enlightenment.

The temple’s atmosphere during Buddhist festivals is electrifying. Yet, even amidst the festivities, there’s a profound sense of peace here that envelops you.

Remember, this is a place of worship so it’s important to dress modestly and show respect. It’s also important to keep your voice low and not disturb others who may be praying or meditating.

Price: 300 LKR ($1 USD), additional donations appreciated

Opening times: 6 AM–10 PM, Mon–Sun

Location: 61 Sri Jinarathana Rd, Colombo

5. Colombo National Performing Arts Theatre

The National Performing Arts Theatre, fondly known as Nelum Pokuna (Lotus Pond) in Sinhalese, is a testament to Sri Lanka’s flourishing cultural scene.

With its striking facade, this modern architectural gem is a beacon of creativity in the heart of Colombo.

Its state-of-the-art facilities, including a world-class sound system and advanced lighting, set the stage for an unparalleled viewing experience.

The theatre showcases a wide variety of performances, including vibrant dance routines, dramas, and musical performances. It’s a melting pot of talent, where local and global artists share the spotlight.

Nelum Pokuna is also a nurturing ground for aspiring artists, offering a range of workshops and classes throughout the year.

Attending a show at Nelum Pokuna is a truly immersive experience, allowing you to connect with the soul of Sri Lanka’s artistic heritage.

From the spellbinding performances to the buzzing atmosphere, it’s a place that celebrates the arts in all their glory and is an essential stop for anyone eager to experience the vibrancy of Sri Lankan culture.

Location: 110 Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Colombo

6. Colombo National Museum

The Colombo National Museum , with its striking white-washed walls and classical architecture, is a grand custodian of Sri Lanka’s fascinating history.

As the largest museum in Sri Lanka, it’s a gateway to understanding this island country’s rich cultural tapestry.

Stepping inside, you’re greeted by an array of galleries showcasing everything from ancient relics and carvings to colonial-period artefacts.

I particularly enjoyed the collection of antique demon masks, each with its own story and artistic intricacy.

The exhibits provide a comprehensive narrative of Sri Lanka’s journey through time, bringing to life the events and traditions that have shaped the nation.

Amidst the wealth of knowledge, the museum’s leafy courtyard is a serene haven, offering a moment of tranquillity and reflection.

For anyone keen on delving deep into Sri Lanka’s historical and cultural identity, the National Museum of Colombo is an essential visit.

Price: 1000 LKR ($3.20) for foreigners

Opening times: 9 AM–7 PM, Mon–Sun

7. Viharamahadevi Park

Viharamahadevi Park, named after a legendary Sri Lankan queen, is a verdant haven in the bustling heart of Colombo. As the city’s largest park, it offers a much-needed respite with its sprawling, lush landscapes.

It’s my favourite park in Colombo and a visual treat, with flowering trees bursting into a kaleidoscope of colours. The park’s centrepiece, a large golden Buddha statue, imbues the space with an even greater sense of tranquillity.

Families flock to the fountains and playgrounds to unwind, exercise, or enjoy leisurely picnics.

The park’s natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere offer a perfect antidote to the noise and bustle of the big city.

Whether you’re strolling along its paths, lounging on its lawns, or simply soaking in the serene environment, a visit to Viharamahadevi Park is a must for anyone in Colombo seeking a peaceful retreat.

Opening times: 6 AM–6 PM, Mon–Sun

Location: Viharamahadevi Park, Colombo

8. Beira Lake

If you’ve read The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida (the 2022 Booker Prize winner), you’ll recognise the name of this lake. Thankfully, it’s changed a lot since 1990 when the book was set!

BTW, if you haven’t read this book , I highly recommend it if you’re planning a trip to Sri Lanka. It’s a really excellent, thought-provoking read and helps give some context surrounding Sri Lanka’s semi-recent civil war.

Beira Lake, a serene oasis in the heart of Colombo, offers a stark yet beautiful contrast to the city’s dynamic energy. With its gentle rowboats and reflective surface, Beira Lake provides a slice of tranquillity amidst the urban chaos.

The lake is encircled by serene walkways and benches. Seema Malaka temple, seemingly afloat on the lake, further adds to the idyllic setting.

As night falls, the area is transformed by the lights from the nearby streets, creating a mesmerising spectacle as they dance across the water’s surface.

Location: Beira Lake, Colombo

9. ON14 Rooftop Bar and Lounge

Perched on the 14th-floor rooftop of the Radisson Hotel Colombo , ON14 offers dazzling views of the ocean and the city skyline. It’s an amazing place to catch the sunset and enjoy a cocktail or three.

With its chic decor, lighting, outdoor pool, and expertly prepared cocktails, it’s a perfect spot for an evening out or a special nightcap after dinner.

I came here on my first night in Colombo to help get over my jetlag. It worked and I had a great time! The drinks are tasty and the staff are super friendly.

The gentle sea breeze, along with the inspiring views over the city, helps set the tone for a laid-back yet sophisticated evening.

Price: 1,000–2,000 LKR ($3–6) per cocktail

Opening times: 6 AM–10:30 PM, Mon–Sun

Location: Radisson Hotel Colombo, 36-38 Clifford Pl, Colombo

10. Diyatha Uyana

Diyatha Uyana, nestled along the tranquil Diyawanna Oya in Colombo, is another waterfront park and a picturesque haven.

It offers a delightful fusion of lush greenery, walking paths, and attractive fountains, offering a peaceful retreat from urban life.

There’s a weekly flower market inside the park held every weekend, popular for its wide variety of flowers, including orchids and roses, as well as fruits and vegetable plants.

It attracts around 100 vendors and is a great place to experience the local flora. Stalls overflow with a dazzling array of flowers and plants, creating a feast of colours and fragrances.

Equally enticing is the open-air food court, where the aromas of local cuisine tantalise the senses.

Opening times: 8 AM–11 PM, Mon–Sun

Location: Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, Colombo

11. Lotus Tower

The Lotus Tower is one of Colombo’s most striking landmarks, soaring high above the city’s skyline. Inspired by the lotus flower, a symbol of purity, the tower’s design is not only architecturally impressive but also deeply meaningful.

At a towering height of 356 meters, it holds the title of the tallest self-supported structure in South Asia. The observation deck offers a mesmerising 360-degree view of Colombo, stretching far into the horizon.

There’s a revolving restaurant called Blue Orbit on the 27th floor offering a unique dining experience with ever-changing vistas.

The tower also houses a variety of entertainment options, including a shopping mall and a conference centre, making it a hub of activity.

Price: $20 USD for foreigners

Opening times: 9 AM–9 PM, Mon–Fri; 9 AM–9 PM, Sat–Sun

12. Pettah Market

Pettah Market is a bustling bazaar in Colombo, always buzzing with energy and brimming with goods from every corner of the island.

It’s a sprawling maze of streets, crowded alleys, and stalls, offering everything from textiles to electronics. This hectic corner of Colombo has been a commercial hub for centuries.

Pettah Market is a sensory overload, full of vibrant colours and lively chatter. It’s a great place to visit in Colombo for a taste of daily life in the city.

As you walk through the market, you’ll be greeted by the sounds of haggling and the scents of fresh produce and spices.

With its vibrant street scenes, colourful goods, and diverse crowds, Pettah offers numerous opportunities for captivating photography.

Opening times: 8:30 AM–7 PM, Sat–Wed; 9 AM–8 PM, Thu–Fri

L ocation: Keyzer St, Colombo

13. Pettah Floating Market

One thing that confused me when I was exploring Colombo is that there are actually two “Pettah” markets. The one described above, and Pettah Floating Market.

Despite being less than a kilometre apart, they’re two totally different places.

Pettah Floating Market lies on the shores of the Saint Sebastian Canal. It’s built on a series of interconnected floating platforms and has nearly 100 stalls selling food, drinks, souvenirs, clothing, jewellery, and more.

Pettah Floating Market was only built and opened in 2014 as part of an urban regeneration project aimed at beautifying the Beira Lake area. It’s an interesting and attractive place to visit in Colombo.

Personally, I preferred the original Pettah Market. I think it offers a more traditional and authentic experience than the floating market. Although it’s definitely more hectic and less organized.

If you have time, I’d recommend checking out both places. They’re only a 10-minute walk apart.

Opening times: 8 AM–10:30 PM, Mon–Sat (closed Sundays)

Location: W E Bastian Mawatha, Colombo

14. Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct

The Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct in Colombo is an architectural relic turned into a trendy shopping and dining venue.

It’s one of the oldest buildings in the Colombo Fort area, originally used to care for the sick and injured of the Dutch East India Company.

Its walls, which once echoed with the footsteps of Dutch medical staff, now resonate with the lively chatter of shoppers and diners.

Today, it’s a lively spot where the past and present merge, with shops, upscale restaurants, and cafés filling the restored colonial space.

The open courtyards and verandas are perfect for enjoying a drink or a meal in the open air.

As the sun sets, the 17th-century Dutch Hospital’s courtyards burst into life. From chic restaurants to cosy pubs and lounges, each venue within the complex exudes its own unique character.

It’s a must-visit for anyone looking to enjoy Colombo’s contemporary scene in a historic setting.

Opening times: 10 AM–10 PM, Mon–Sun

Location: Hospital St, Colombo

15. Ministry of Crab

Ministry of Crab , nestled in the historic Dutch Hospital precinct of Colombo, is a culinary institution renowned for its exquisite seafood. Especially (well done, you guessed it) crab.

This celebrated restaurant was co-founded by celebrity chef Dharshan Munidasa and Sri Lankan cricketers Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara.

The menu is a homage to the island’s bounty of seafood, with the crabs being the star attraction. Its Sri Lankan crab dishes are as tantalising in flavour as they are in presentation.

Each crab is locally sourced, and you get the opportunity to choose your crab before it’s expertly cooked to order.

Ministry of Crab’s top-quality food is complemented by its impeccable service, creating an atmosphere that’s both lively and welcoming.

It’s one of the pricier restaurants in Colombo. Meals here can easily cost upwards of $100 USD per person. But if you’re a crab lover, it’s one of the best places to eat in the city.

Opening times: 12 PM–10:30 PM, Mon–Sun

Location: Old Dutch Hospital Complex, 04 Hospital St, Colombo

16. Colombo Port City

Colombo Port City (also known as Colombo International Financial City) is a bold statement of Sri Lanka’s modern aspirations.

This huge urban development, rising from land reclaimed from the sea next to Galle Face Green and the existing commercial port, is reshaping Colombo’s skyline and economic landscape.

The sheer size of the project has made it one of the largest urban development projects in Asia – which is saying a lot!

It’s still being built. But, when finished, it will contain a blend of luxury apartments, state-of-the-art office spaces, and shopping malls.

Envisioned as a harmonious mix of urban architecture and green spaces, Port City is set to become a bustling hub for international trade and entertainment.

Even in its developing stages, the project has begun to redefine the city.

Location: Port City, Colombo

Beaches in Colombo

Colombo’s beaches are nothing compared with the incredible beaches in southern and eastern Sri Lanka .

But, they are popular with Colombo residents and are great places to soak up the local vibes and do a bit of people-watching.

17. Mount Lavinia Beach

Mount Lavinia Beach, just south of central Colombo, is a haven for sun-seekers and water sports lovers.

Its golden sands are a picturesque playground for activities like surfing, kiteboarding, jet skiing, and even deep-sea fishing.

The charm of Mount Lavinia Beach extends beyond its sparkling waters. The iconic Mount Lavinia Hotel offers beachside dining and a glimpse into Sri Lanka’s colonial past.

It’s a great spot for a romantic sunset cocktail or meal with Indian Ocean views.

18. Negombo Beach

Just a short drive from the airport, Negombo Beach offers a lively escape with its bustling atmosphere and local charm. It’s a tapestry of local life, where the rhythm of the waves matches the buzz of the beachside markets.

The culinary scene here is a highlight, with beachside restaurants serving up fresh seafood straight from the local fishermen’s catch.

With its convenient location and vibrant vibe, Negombo Beach is a great place to spend a day or two soaking up the local vibes and enjoying the laid-back beach town atmosphere.

It’s also a convenient area to stay if you have a morning flight departing from Bandaranaike International Airport, Sri Lanka’s main international hub.

19. Kalutara Beach

A bit further south along the west coast from Mount Lavinia, Kalutara Beach is a more tranquil alternative. This palm-fringed sanctuary is ideal for families and those seeking a more laid-back beach experience.

The palm-shaded sands are perfect if you’re looking to unwind with a book or soak up the sun. The serene sunsets here are a photographer’s dream, painting the sky in hues of orange and purple.

While the beach offers a selection of casual dining spots and local shops, the focus here is more on relaxation than commercial activity.

Kalutara Beach’s quiet charm makes it a hidden gem for travellers seeking a peaceful retreat near Colombo.

Colombo’s Markets and Malls

Colombo’s shopping scene is diverse, with traditional markets and modern malls catering to all tastes and budgets.

20. Arcade Independence Square

Arcade Independence Square is the perfect shopping destination when you visit Colombo.

It’s a large boutique shopping and entertainment complex set in a beautifully restored set of colonial buildings, offering a mix of high-end shops, dining, and leisure spaces.

Lose yourself in a trendy shopping spree surrounded by elegant architecture and picturesque surroundings.

Taking a break from shopping? Grab a bite at one of the many casual restaurants or cafes nearby.

Whether you’re looking for souvenirs or simply want to treat yourself to some retail therapy, Arcade Independence Square is a popular location in Colombo.

Odel is one of Colombo’s premier department stores, known for its wide selection of clothing, accessories, and homeware. It’s a one-stop shop for both Sri Lankan and international brands and a favourite of many locals. The store is divided into different sections, each with its own unique aesthetic and style.

Odel actively promotes and supports local designers, showcasing their creations on the shelves. You can find everything from intricately designed batik clothing to handwoven baskets, furniture, and home decor items.

And if you’re looking for something extra special, Odel also offers personalized services such as made-to-measure clothing and gift wrapping.

22. Majestic City

Majestic City is a multi-storey shopping mall a few blocks south of The Mandarina hotel , where I stayed during my time in Colombo.

This modern mall houses a range of stores, a cinema, a supermarket, and a food court. It’s a great place to escape the heat and do some shopping, catch a movie, or enjoy a budget-friendly meal.

The mall is well designed, with a series of elevators and ramps, making it easy for everyone to navigate through the different levels.

Additionally, there are plenty of seating areas throughout the mall, providing a comfortable space to rest and recharge before continuing on your shopping spree.

How to Get to Colombo

If you’re arriving in Sri Lanka from overseas, you’ll almost certainly land at Bandaranaike International Airport. From here, you can either take the bus (cheaper) or a taxi (more expensive, but better) to the city centre.

I paid 3,500 LKR (about $10 USD) to get from the airport to the city. Definitely money well spent!

For those already in Sri Lanka, buses and trains run to Colombo from most major towns and cities, including Galle , Weligama , Matara, Kandy , Nuwara Eliya, Ella , Anuradhapura , Trincomalee , and Jaffna .

I usually prefer taking the train over the bus where possible. It’s more comfortable and the scenery is beautiful.

However, my favourite way to travel around Sri Lanka is to rent a tuk-tuk and drive myself. There’s nothing like the freedom this mode of transport gives you.

You can stop at beaches and small towns along the way. And it’s super fun!

Where to Stay in Colombo

As you’d expect from Sri Lanka’s capital city, Colombo has a huge range of accommodation options. There’s something for every budget, from cheap hostels and guesthouses to luxurious 5-star hotels.

I stayed at The Mandarina Colombo and would definitely recommend it as a comfortable, mid-range hotel in Colombo.

🤩 Check availability and prices!

The rooms are spacious and spotlessly clean, and there’s a rooftop pool with sea views that’s especially beautiful at sunset.

The location is fantastic too, right in the heart of the city, one block back from the seafront. It’s within walking distance of many of the best places to visit in Colombo that I’ve mentioned in this guide.

Here are some other top-rated places to stay in Colombo:

  • Colombo Orchid Villa (budget)
  • Marino Beach Colombo (mid-range)
  • Geoffrey Bawa’s Home Number 11 (high-end/luxury)

Sima Malaka Colombo

On my recent visit to Sri Lanka, I spent two nights in Colombo after arriving at the airport.

My aim was to see the main sights of the city while also recovering from jetlag before continuing my adventure around Sri Lanka.

Colombo is Sri Lanka’s vibrant capital, and it offers a captivating blend of history, culture, and modernity.

It’s a city where the air is filled with the aroma of spices and sea breeze, streets are lined with a mix of colonial buildings and skyscrapers, and the warmth of its people makes you feel right at home.

From the serene beauty of ancient temples and lush parks to the bustling markets and exquisite dining experiences, there are plenty of fun things to do in Colombo.

So whether you’re a history buff, a food enthusiast, or simply in search of new adventures, I know you’ll find something to your taste in the city.

How long to spend in Colombo

Before we get started, I would say that a couple of nights is about right for exploring Colombo.

There isn’t a huge amount to do, so I’d recommend seeing the main sights and then prioritising other breathtaking destinations within this incredible country.

Colombo Seaside

If I’m being totally honest, Colombo was my least favourite place that I visited on my trip, but I do still think it’s worth visiting.

Especially as you’re likely to fly into Colombo airport, you may as well spend a couple of nights in the city to explore.

How to get around Colombo

We had a private driver for the entirety of our trip, so we explored the city by car. Our driver was utterly wonderful – if you’d like his details, please DM me on Instagram .

Gangarama Sima Malaka Colombo

If you don’t have a driver then I’d recommend exploring the city with a tuk tuk tour. Here are some of the best options to book:

  • Local Colombo City Tour by Tuk Tuk
  • Colombo: City Sightseeing Tour by Tuk-Tuk with Pickup
  • Colombo: City Highlights Guided Private Tour by Tuk Tuk

Of course you’d be able to explore some areas on foot too, which may be a great option if you’ve got more time on your hands.

15 best things to do in Colombo

1. the national museum of colombo.

Address: Sir Marcus Fernando Mawatha, Colombo 00700

Opening times: Daily 09:00 – 19:00

Price: Adult 1500 LKR, Child 750 LKR

Colombo National Museum

As the largest museum in Sri Lanka, the National Museum of Colombo stands as a custodian of the nation’s rich history and cultural heritage.

Founded in 1877 by Sir William Henry Gregory, the British Governor of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) at the time, this museum houses a vast collection that spans several centuries.

From ancient royal regalia and fascinating artefacts to colonial memorabilia and intricate carvings, the museum offers a deep dive into the island’s vibrant past.

Colombo Museum

The building itself is an imposing structure that’s a fine example of colonial architecture.

Highlights include the regal throne and crown of the Kandyan monarchs, as well as an extensive collection of antique demon masks, sculptures, and Buddhist art.

Insider tip: You’ll need a good couple of hours if you want to explore the entire museum in detail.

However, we probably got around in about one hour as we did more of a whistle-stop tour due to being tight on time.

2. Gangaramaya Temple

Address: 61 Sri Jinarathana Rd, Colombo 00200

Opening times: Daily 06:00 – 22:00

Price: Free but donations welcome

Gangaramaya Temple

Gangaramaya Temple is not just a place of worship, it also encompasses a mix of architectural styles, making it one of the most unique Buddhist temples in Colombo.

It reflects an eclectic blend of Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian, and Chinese architecture, and I think a visit is one of the best things to do in Colombo.

The temple complex includes a vihara (monastery), a bodhi tree, a pagoda, an assembly hall for monks, and a museum.

Gangaramaya Colombo

The museum within the temple is home to a wide array of gifts received from devotees and well-wishers over the years, including antique cars and an elephant skeleton.

It’s a serene retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city, and one of the most important temples in Colombo.

Insider tip : Remember to dress appropriately, ensuring your shoulders and knees are covered – for both men and women.

3. Lotus Tower

Address: AC6, Colombo 01000

Opening times: Daily 09:00 – 22:00

Price: 20 USD

Lotus Tower Colombo

Rising above the skyline of Colombo, the Lotus Tower is the tallest self-supported structure in South Asia and one of the best things to do in Colombo.

Officially known as the Colombo Lotus Tower, it’s designed to resemble a blooming lotus flower, a significant symbol in Buddhist culture.

The tower serves multiple functions, including telecommunications, observation, and entertainment, and features an observation deck that offers panoramic views of the city and beyond.

Visitors can enjoy a variety of attractions within the tower, such as restaurants, conference facilities, and a shopping mall.

The Lotus Tower at night is a sight to behold, illuminated in vibrant colours that can be seen across the city, making it a prominent landmark in Colombo’s skyline.

Insider tip: For the best experience, I’d recommend visiting at sunset to see the city flooded with gorgeous golden light.

4. Galle Face Green

Address: N/A

Opening times: 24 hours

Galle Face Green

Galle Face Green is a vast urban park along the Indian Ocean coast, providing a refreshing escape in the heart of Colombo.

Stretching over half a kilometre, it was initially laid out in 1859 by the British for horse racing. Today, it’s a popular spot for leisure and recreation among both locals and tourists.

The green is perfect for picnics, kite flying, or simply enjoying a leisurely stroll along the water’s edge.

When the sun sets, the area comes alive with street food vendors selling an array of local snacks, making it an ideal place to savour traditional Sri Lankan flavours.

Insider tip: I’d recommend visiting during the day or at sunset. Some friends have said they felt a little uneasy visiting later in the evening, so a daytime visit will likely be more relaxing.

5. Beira Lake & Sima Malaka

Address: Sir James Pieris Mawatha, Colombo 00200

Opening times: N/A

Price: 300 LKR for Sima Malaka entry

Beira Lake

Situated in the heart of Colombo, Beira Lake offers a serene setting amidst the urban environment.

The lake has a rich history, originally used by the Portuguese for defence purposes in the 16th century.

Today, it serves as a tranquil oasis for city dwellers and visitors, featuring a small island in the centre that hosts the Gangarama Sima Malaka temple, accessible via a bridge.

Sima Malaka Temple

The lake is surrounded by lush greenery and is a popular spot for boating and relaxation.

The area around Beira Lake is also known for its upscale hotels and restaurants, making it a picturesque spot for evening walks.

Insider tip: The lake is close to other Colombo attractions, including the main Gangaramaya Temple, so I’d recommend combining your visits.

6. Viharamahadevi Park

Opening times: Daily 06:00 – 18:00

Viharamahadevi Park

Viharamahadevi Park, the largest and most prominent public park in Colombo, offers a lush green sanctuary amidst the urban sprawl.

Named in honour of Queen Viharamahadevi, the mother of King Dutugemunu, a legendary hero in Sri Lankan history, the park is renowned for its beautifully landscaped gardens, wide-open spaces, and flowering trees.

A standout feature is the golden Buddha statue that greets visitors at the park’s entrance.

The park also boasts a large water fountain, which becomes a focal point for gatherings and events.

Insider tip: Spring is an excellent time to visit the park, as this is when the frangipani trees are in full bloom.

7. Independence Square

Address: Colombo 00700

Independence Square

Independence Square is a symbolic site in Colombo that commemorates Sri Lanka’s liberation from British rule in 1948.

At the heart of the square stands the Independence Memorial Hall, an impressive stone building inspired by the architecture of ancient Sri Lankan kingdoms.

The hall and its surrounding area, with statues and reliefs depicting national heroes and moments from the country’s struggle for independence, serve as a poignant reminder of Sri Lanka’s resilient spirit.

View from Independence Square

Address: Keyzer St, Colombo 01100

Opening times:

  • Saturday – Wednesday: 08:30 – 19:00
  • Thursday – Friday: 09:00 – 20:00

Pettah Market

Pettah Market is the bustling heart of Colombo, where the vibrancy and diversity of Sri Lankan life are on full display.

This sprawling market district offers everything from fresh produce and spices to electronics, textiles, and jewellery.

The narrow streets and alleys are lined with shops and stalls, each with its own array of goods, creating a sensory overload of sights, sounds, and smells.

Bargaining is an essential skill here, as vendors expect some haggling over prices. Pettah Market is not just a place to shop; it’s an experience that offers insights into the local way of life.

Visitors can explore the colourful fruit and vegetable markets, the aromatic spice streets, or the bustling clothing lanes.

Pettah Floating Market

Nearby there is also Pettah Floating Market, where you’ll find a similar set up but on the water instead.

Insider tip: Pettah Market is somewhat chaotic – it’s fun but if you don’t enjoy jostling with the locals then you may want to skip it.

Sri Kaliawasanathar Swami Devasthanam Temple

The Sri Kailawasanathan Swami Devasthanam Temple, often simply referred to as the Kapikaawatha Temple, is one of Colombo’s oldest and most revered Hindu temples.

Dedicated to the gods Shiva and Ganesha, this temple is a beacon of religious devotion and architectural beauty.

I’d say it’s well worth visiting for its colourful façade and intricately carved statues that stand out amidst the city’s landscape.

The temple’s interior is adorned with vibrant murals and sculptures that narrate stories from Hindu mythology.

The annual festival, or Maha Shivaratri, sees the temple and its surroundings come alive with rituals, dance, and music, offering a glimpse into Hindu religious practices.

10. Art galleries and cultural shows

Colombo’s vibrant arts scene is a testament to the island’s rich cultural heritage.

If you’re an art enthusiast then carving out time to explore one of the city’s art galleries is one of the best things to do in Colombo.

The city’s art galleries, such as the National Art Gallery and the Sapumal Foundation, showcase a diverse range of Sri Lankan art, from ancient crafts to contemporary pieces.

Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre

These spaces provide a platform for both established and emerging artists to display their work.

Cultural shows in Colombo, including traditional Kandyan dance performances and dramatic enactments of Sri Lankan folklore, offer a glimpse into the island’s artistic diversity.

Venues like the Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre frequently host these cultural spectacles, allowing audiences to immerse themselves in the rhythms, costumes, and expressions of Sri Lanka’s heritage.

11. Eat local cuisine

Sampling the local cuisine is an essential part of any visit to Colombo, where the flavours of Sri Lanka come to life.

The culinary landscape is a reflection of the island’s diverse cultural influences, featuring Sinhalese, Tamil, Moor, Dutch, and Portuguese heritage.

Shang Palace Starter

From bustling street food stalls to elegant restaurants, Colombo offers an array of dining options.

Signature dishes such as hoppers (bowl-shaped pancakes), kottu (chopped roti mixed with vegetables and meat), and the celebrated Sri Lankan curry, served with fragrant rice, are must-tries.

Seafood plays a prominent role in the local diet, with crab, prawns, and fish prepared in a variety of spices and coconut milk.

For those with a sweet tooth, traditional desserts like watalappan (a coconut custard pudding) and kiribath (milk rice) provide a delightful finish to any meal.

Fresh Coconut

Don’t forget to also try some coconut water from one of the fresh coconuts for a unique experience!

Insider tip: Be careful where you try the street food, as you don’t want to end up sick before you’ve even got started! Our driver warned us against some places; if you’re not sure, don’t risk it.

12. Jami Ul-Alfar Masjid

Address: 228 2nd Cross Street, Colombo 01100

Opening times: Opening hours are not made clear, so it seems to be a bit of luck (I personally didn’t go inside). Definitely avoid Fridays, as this is a religious day and there are no tours.

Price: Free admission

Jami Ul-Alfar Masjid

The Jami Ul-Alfar Masjid, also known as the Red Mosque, is a striking architectural landmark in Colombo’s Pettah district.

Completed in 1909, the mosque is distinguished by its red and white patterned brickwork, which gives it a candy-striped appearance.

Its design incorporates elements from Indo-Islamic and Gothic revival architecture, making it a unique sight in the cityscape.

The mosque serves as a key place of worship for Colombo’s Muslim community, but its distinctive beauty attracts visitors of all backgrounds.

The interior of the mosque, with its arches, columns, and intricate calligraphy, further exemplifies the skill and creativity of its builders.

13. Enjoy high tea

High tea in Colombo is a cherished tradition, offering a blend of colonial elegance and local flavours. As a Brit myself, I’m always delighted to indulge in a spot of high tea!

Two of the most iconic venues for this indulgent experience are the Mount Lavinia Hotel and the Shangri-La Colombo .

Afternoon Tea Shangri La Colombo

The Mount Lavinia Hotel, with its colonial charm and stunning ocean views, provides a historic setting for high tea.

Guests can enjoy a selection of teas, accompanied by both traditional English and Sri Lankan sweet and savoury treats, on the hotel’s expansive terrace overlooking the Indian Ocean.

Shangri-La Colombo, on the other hand, offers a more contemporary high tea experience in its luxurious lounge.

GF High Tea Shangri La

The menu includes a sophisticated array of sandwiches, pastries, and scones, paired with a wide variety of teas and infusions.

Insider tip: I wouldn’t ercommend staying at the Mount Lavinia Hotel. Although it has an iconic reputation, it is now quite old and dated.

Instead, we stayed at the Shangri-La – read my review of staying at the Shangri-La Colombo or discover more of the best hotels in Colombo .

14. Old Parliament Building

Address: Old Parliament Building, Lotus Road, Colombo

Old Parliament Building Colombo

The Old Parliament Building, a testament to Sri Lanka’s colonial past, stands majestically along the Galle Face Green, facing the Indian Ocean.

Constructed in the 1930s during the British colonial era, this building served as the seat of the Ceylon Parliament until the new parliamentary complex was opened in Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte in 1983.

Designed in the Neo-Baroque style, the building’s architecture features elaborate stone carvings, high columns, and a grand façade that reflects the grandeur of its time.

Today, it houses the Presidential Secretariat, but its historical and architectural significance continues to attract visitors.

Insider tip: Note that photography is banned at the Old Parliament Building, and they are very hot on accosting tourists who do take photos.

15. Kelaniya Viharaya

Address: Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya, Kelaniya 13000

Kelaniya Viharaya

Kelaniya Viharaya, one of the most sacred Buddhist temple sites in Sri Lanka, holds a venerable place in the hearts of devotees.

According to the chronicles, it was consecrated by the Buddha himself, who visited the site on his third and final journey to the island.

The temple’s history is rich, with its origins dating back to before 500 BCE.

The highlight of Kelaniya Viharaya is its stunning image house, which contains elaborate frescoes depicting scenes from the Buddha’s life and significant events in the history of Buddhism in Sri Lanka.

Insider tip: This temple isn’t technically in Colombo, as it’s about a 25 minute drive from the city centre. However, it comes so highly recommended that I simply had to include it in my guide to the best things to do in Colombo.

The 16 Best Things to Do in Colombo, Sri Lanka

colombo district travel places

Although travelers are often in a hurry to get farther afield, there are plenty of fun things to do in Colombo, Sri Lanka’s busy capital. Dutch and British colonial architecture, urban parks, ancient temples, and great food are among the many reasons to give Colombo a chance.

Colombo’s urban sprawl goes on in every direction; however, the city is carved into distinct neighborhoods—each with a name and number. International visitors end up spending most of their time in the action-packed neighborhoods of Fort (Colombo 1), Pettah (Colombo 11), and Cinnamon Gardens (Colombo 7).

Indoor attractions in Colombo may close for the many Buddhist holidays (usually on the full moon of each month) and other public holidays. Fortunately, many of the best things to do in Colombo are free and outdoors. Be patient: Parks, temples, and the beach become extra crowded on weekends and holidays.

Get Overwhelmed in Pettah

Strolling around aimlessly on a sunny day is the best way to get to know Colombo, and the best place to begin is Pettah.

Just east across the moat from the Fort neighborhood, Pettah is the busiest part of Colombo. Wandering around Pettah is an essential experience—although, expect to have senses completely overwhelmed. The busy streets and sidewalks stay jammed with pedestrians and tuk-tuks.

Pettah is home to a scattering of markets (including a floating market), the Old City Hall, a Dutch church dating to 1749, the Dutch Period Museum, and the Red Mosque.

Visit a Photogenic Mosque

While shuffling around Pettah, make time to stop by the Red Masjid (Red Mosque)—an iconic mosque constructed in 1909. You’ll know you’ve found it by the red-and-white, candy-cane pattern implemented in the design. Allegedly, sailors arriving by sea could recognize the landmark before any other, and know they were coming into Colombo.

The Red Masjid is squeezed onto busy 2nd Cross Street near the sea end.

Visit the National Museum

Imagebook / Theekshana Kumara / Getty Images

Opened in 1877, the National Museum in Colombo houses royal regalia, crowns, and many artifacts pertaining to the history of ancient Sri Lanka. The white building itself is a beautiful example of colonial, Italian-style architecture.

The National Museum of Natural History is adjacent to the National Museum; you’ll spend more time inside the latter, but the Museum of Natural History is too convenient to skip.

Both museums are just across the street from Viharamahadevi Park; they are open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. A combo ticket for entrance to both is around $6.30.

Enjoy the Collection at Gangaramaya Temple

Boy_Anupong / Getty Images

Located on Beira Lake, Gangaramaya Temple houses scores of Buddha statues and rare relics. Although not well curated or organized, the temple also serves as a museum with a surprising array of items, including gold coins and unusual antiques. A small art gallery on site is a bonus.

The temple is very much still in use as a place of worship and learning. Dress appropriately and follow good temple etiquette when visiting.

Reflect by Beira Lake

Nearby Beira Lake is the perfect setting to contemplate all you saw inside Gangaramaya Temple. Seema Malaka, a peaceful place of meditation, is situated directly on the water. Local master architect Geoffrey Bawa redesigned the temple in 1976 after the first one sank.

The bodhi tree at Seema Malaka was grown from a branch of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi tree in Anuradhapura, considered to be the oldest, human-planted tree (known planting date is 288 BC). It was started with a branch from the bodhi tree in Bihar, India, under which Gautama Buddha is said to have gained enlightenment.

Enjoy Sri Lankan Street Food

Peter Stuckings / Getty Images

String hoppers, samosas, kottu roti, and curry are arguably the four most popular street-food snacks you’ll find in Colombo; but that’s just the tip of a delicious iceberg. All markets will have more than enough local specialties to try ! You’ll find the most variety in one place around Pettah (especially near the train station) and along Galle Road. For seafood, wander the strip parallel to Mount Lavinia Beach and Galle Face Green.

Tour a Famous Architect’s House

Geoffrey Bawa was a celebrated Sri Lankan architect whose work influenced well-known architects throughout the world. Elements of his designs are especially prominent in Asia, where balancing modern and traditional values is considered important.

Geoffrey Bawa’s impressive house in the southern part of Colombo can be enjoyed on a 45-minute guided tour Monday through Friday at 10 a.m., 2 p.m., and 3:30 p.m.; Saturdays at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.; Sundays at 11 a.m.

Enjoy the Landscaping in Viharamahadevi Park

Diego Fiore / Getty Images

You’ll probably want a break after the busyness of Pettah, and Viharamahadevi Park is the answer. The urban park has a jogging/cycling trail, amphitheater, golden Buddha statue, and pleasant landscaping. Don't be alarmed by the giant fruit bats sleeping in the trees overhead: They are harmless!

Viharamahadevi Park is in Cinnamon Gardens, a 15-minute walk southeast from Beira Lake. The park is anchored by the Colombo Public Library on the southwest side and Colombo Town Hall on the northeast side.

Find Some Peace at Independence Memorial Hall

Imagebook/Theekshana Kumara / Getty Images

Independence Memorial Hall is an expansive, open-air structure that was finished in 1953 to commemorate Sri Lanka’s independence from British rule. You can stroll around the area or rent a bicycle and ride the length of Independence Walk. Aside from a few touts who approach tourists, the area is a peaceful, tree-lined respite in Colombo.

Independence Memorial Hall can be found just southeast of the National Museum and Viharamahadevi Park.

Go to Mount Lavinia Beach

Kevin Clogstoun / Getty Images

Sri Lanka’s best beaches are located in the southern part of the island . But if time is short or you want to enjoy some seafood within sight of the water, Mount Lavinia Beach is a good option. It's only 30 minutes south of the city, and the Mount Lavinia Hotel allows non-guests to use the pool area for a small fee.

Any of the southbound buses plying the main A2 highway will drop you at Mount Lavinia Beach, or you can take the train to Mount Lavinia Station.

Admire and Shop for Local Art

If you’d like something creative from Sri Lanka to take home, you can find it at the Nelum Pokuna art “street,” a sidewalk art market near the well-designed Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa performing arts theater. Local artists show off and peddle their work; some is original while many paintings are replicas.

See the art on display at the southern edge of Viharamahadevi Park, just opposite the National Museum of Natural History.

Watch a Sunset at Galle Face Green

Guido Cozzi / Atlantide Phototravel / Getty Images

If the weather is nice—as it often is outside of monsoon season —Galle Face Green is an ideal place for fresh air, sunsets, and street food. The seafront promenade stays busy with couples and local families who are often happy to chat. A long, spacious lawn is perfect for letting kids run or just lounging to watch locals fly kites.

Get to Galle Face Green on the coast directly south of the Fort neighborhood.

Shop in an Old Dutch Hospital

The Old Colombo Dutch Hospital is thought to have been around since 1681, making it one of the oldest buildings in town. The restored heritage building was converted into a shopping-and-eating district in 2011. Prices and products target tourists; however, the setting and history merit a walk through.

Find the hospital in the center of the Fort neighborhood.

Visit an Indoor Aquarium

Water World Lanka, located a 40-minute drive east of the Fort, is an indoor aquarium with more than 500 varieties of fish. Underwater tunnels, educational shows, and an outdoor bird park entertain guests seven days a week from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Although snorkeling or diving to see marine life without the glass would be even better, Water World Lanka is a great option for experiencing some of Sri Lanka’s rich biodiversity.

If the birds are the most exciting part for you, consider adding a trip to the Beddegana Wetland Park to enjoy many of Sri Lanka’s 500-plus bird species. Elevated boardwalks twisting through mangroves allow visitors to get up close for photos.

Marvel at an Ancient Temple

Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara (often shortened to Kelaniya Temple) is an ancient temple that dates back before 500 BC, and was destroyed but rebuilt in the early 1900s. The original stupa there allegedly contains a jewel-encrusted throne used by Buddha, who is also said to have visited the temple. Many walls and ceilings are intricately carved or painted with scenes from the life of Buddha.

Kelaniya Temple is located a 30-minute drive west of the Fort neighborhood.

Explore the Fort Neighborhood

The Fort neighborhood is home to Colombo’s financial district (including the Colombo Stock Exchange) and is the epicenter of Sri Lanka’s colonial past. Historic buildings from British and Dutch rule are squeezed into it, while the president’s house and various government buildings can be seen situated between the manicured gardens.

Fort is on the coast just south of Colombo Harbour.

The 10 Most Beautiful Places To See In Colombo In 2024

Asian Wanderlust

Today, we visit the capital of Sri Lanka, Colombo! Historic cities like Anuradhapura , Polonnaruwa , and Kandy were former capitals of the country. Like Negombo , Colombo is close to Sri Lanka’s main international airport so you’re most probably going to stop there at some point during your trip.

But since it is the capital of the country, its urban atmosphere is quite different from that of other smaller cities like Ella or Mirissa . If you don’t have time to visit everything, I recommend skipping Colombo and heading directly to the south or the center of the country.

If you can afford the time, spending a day or two in Colombo will be an interesting experience. There are many nice places to visit and I’ll tell you more about them in a moment. Let’s first have a look at the accommodations you can book for your stay in Colombo.

Where To Stay In Colombo?

Island Hostels Colombo 1

Colombo is made up of several numbered districts and as a tourist, one of the most convenient and pleasant districts to stay in is Colombo 3.

If you are looking for a hostel, book at the Island Hostels Colombo in Colombo 3. Dorm room prices are not very expensive and you’ll have access to a small swimming pool.

Island Hostels Colombo

If you can afford better accommodation, definitely book at Marino Beach . It is also in Colombo 3 and happens to be a seaside hotel!

Marino Beach Colombo 1

Rooms at the Marino Beach are also very well-equipped and prices are affordable. However, it is one of the most popular hotels in Colombo so make sure to book early.

1. The Gangaramaya Temple

Things To Do In Colombo Sri Lanka #1 - The Gangaramaya Temple

Entrance fee : $3

If there is a temple you should visit in Colombo, it is the Buddhist temple of Gangaramaya. It is different from other temples in Sri Lanka because its structure is inspired by many foreign cultures and includes aspects of Thai, Indian, and Chinese architecture.

colombo district travel places

One of the most important places in the temple is the sacred Bodhi tree. Visitors usually wander around this sacred tree while reciting mantras. They also place offerings at the foot of the tree. It was a very interesting experience and, I have to say, that tree was very soothing to be around. Come grab some good vibes at Gangaramaya Temple. 🙂

2. The Seema Malaka Temple

Things To Do In Colombo Sri Lanka #2 - The Seema Malaka Temple

Spot #3 - The Vihara Mahadevi Park

Entrance: free

The Vihara Mahadevi Park is the lungs of Colombo. It has a small lake, grass fields, great trees, and some animals. If you pay close attention, you will see the rails of an old train line that used to lead to the park. This is the place to be for a breath of fresh air during your trip to Colombo! 🙂

Check out the large golden Buddha statue facing the Colombo City Council. It is an old building that dates back to the English colonization period; its western architecture kind of gives that detail away. The Vihara Mahadevi park was also called Victoria Park at that time in reference to the Queen of England.

4. The Pettah Floating Market

Things To Do In Colombo Sri Lanka #4 - The Pettah Floating Market

The Pettah Market is a very nice floating market consisting of a few dozen shops sitting on wooden structures floating on Beira Lake. You will find restaurants, souvenir and tea shops there. FYI, Ceylon (former name of Sri Lanka) tea is one of the best teas in the world so make sure to visit tea plantations in Nuwara Eliya for example if you’ve got the chance.

Let’s wrap up our tour of the city of Colombo with two Buddhist temples located in the outskirts of the city. First is the beautiful temple of Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya which is an important place of worship for all Sri Lankan Buddhists. It is mentioned in Ramayana (Hinduism) and Mahavamsa (Buddhism). It is said that Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, visited this place on his third trip to Sri Lanka.

The Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya temple is gorgeous and is dominated by a large white stupa. The interior of the temple is perhaps the most interesting part because there are many statues and beautiful paintings exposed there.

How to spend 24 Hours in Colombo, Sri Lanka

Colombo is a gateway city for most travellers as it’s close to the main international airport of Sri Lanka. Even though there are many things to do in Colombo and it’s the capital city, we recommend spending at least 24 hours here. It may not be for everyone, but give Colombo a chance!

The city has some great sights to see, but you only need a day or two to explore. If you have 2 or 3 weeks in Sri Lanka, then one day in Colombo will be plenty. Besides, there are many places to see in Sri Lanka which we are sure you’re itching to see!

Keep reading on to see what to do in Colombo, Sri Lanka in 2024.

Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque (Red Mosque) - One of the best places to visit in Colombo

1. Explore Pettah Market

If you’re staying in the Colombo Fort (C1 district), then Pettah Market should be your first stop of the day . In the morning you’ll find the markets busy with locals finding produce to start their day. It’s also a great spot to find a quick Sri Lankan breakfast, snack or fruit juice.

Pettah Market was our favourite part of spending a day in Colombo. It’s packed with so much life and energy, you won’t know where to look! This is also the perfect place to purchase and bargain for anything you either forgot to pack for your Sri Lanka trip or keep-sakes you would like to bring home.

In Pettah Market you will find fresh fruits, plenty of clothing options and even electronics, it’s all at your fingertips. The atmosphere of Pettah Market is chaotic yet beautiful to watch, it’s definitely a must-visit when creating your itinerary on what to do in Colombo.

Pettah Market - What to do in Colombo Guide

2. Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque (Red mosque)

Next up on what to do in Colombo guide, we have the highly anticipated Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque, also known as the Red Mosque.

The Red Mosque opened in 1909, and was originally built to accommodate 1,500 worshippers at any one time. Also known as the Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque, it’s a must-see when spending one day in Colombo.

With its candy red-striped exterior and unique design, it’s safe to say it stands out from the rest of the street. Located in the heart of Pettah, since opening over 100 years ago it has gained more building space and has since expanded to hold up to 10,000 people! This is a truly beautiful building and one of the best places to visit in Colombo.

Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque (Red Mosque) - One of the best places to visit in Colombo

3. Visit Gangaramaya Park & Seema Malakaya

Gangaramaya Park is a great opportunity to take a breather from the hustle and bustle of the city. The park itself is a small island that extends into the middle of Lake Beira. You can visit the park by crossing a bridge and into the greenery. It’s a very peaceful place to be surrounded by water in Sri Lanka’s busy capital city.

It’s another one of the best things to do in Colombo as you can appreciate the city skyline and even rent paddle boats on the water !

Found on the same lake is Seema Malakaya Temple – a beautiful Buddhist temple that looks like it’s floating on the lake with many Buddha statues. Be sure to add this to your list of things to do in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

4. Enjoy the amazing International food

Of course, when visiting any country you are encouraged to eat as much local food as you can because let’s face it, it’s the best! Visiting Colombo opens up a few extra culinary doors as it is the cultural hub of Sri Lanka.

Yes, Colombo is one of the only cities in Sri Lanka where you can get American fast food like McDonald’s, KFC and Burger King all in one place, but that isn’t what you’re here to read about.

While spending 1 day in Colombo, we recommend trying the South Indian restaurants. (Don’t worry there’s plenty of Sri Lankan cuisine to eat during your Sri Lanka trip). We found many vegetarian South Indian eateries in Pettah and they are incredibly affordable. Masala Dosa is our #1 South Indian dish that we would recommend for first-timers.

Spending longer in Sri Lanka? Here’s our 3 Week Sri Lanka route !

5. Colombo Lotus Tower – Nelum Kuluna

As you wander the streets of Colombo, to the south of the centre you catch a glimpse of a 350 m (1,150 ft) tall Lotus flower. Yes, this is a building! And it happens to be Sri Lanka’s tallest building in the whole country, impressive right?!

You may not have heard of this fantastic tower before because it was only built in September 2019. Its primary use is as a communications tower but doubles up as a tourist viewing platform. Be sure to add this to your places to visit in Colombo list. Being the tallest building in Sri Lanka, you’ll be guaranteed the best views around.

As of 2024, tickets cost $20 per person for tourists. Information and tickets can be found on the official website: Colombo Lotus Tower .

6. Take in the European influence of Colombo 1’s District

You may notice European influences across the city, which are also prominent across the south coast. This is because Sri Lanka was first colonised by the Portuguese as early as 1505, then the Dutch around 1630 and later the British in 1815. Sri Lanka later gained its independence in February 1948, marking its 76th anniversary this year!

Across Sri Lanka, you will find many Dutch colonial buildings, one of the most famous being Galle Fort. In Colombo, the Cargills Building caught our attention with its colourful red exterior.

Lankem Plantations House - Dutch Colonial Era building in Colombo

7. Independence Square

Next up on our What to do in Colombo guide is Independence Square . As indicated in the name, Independence Square was constructed by the Sri Lankan government to commemorate its Independence from the British Empire, which came to an end in 1948 after 133 years of rule. Add this to your Colombo itinerary and enjoy its beauty while appreciating everything it represents.

That’s our 7 places to visit in Colombo itinerary – and we have one more extra recommendation for you!

Watch a sunset at Galle Face Green

As your day comes to an end, why not close off with a spectacular sunset at Galle Face Green. Colombo has some of the best sunsets in Sri Lanka as it’s located on the west coast. We experienced our favourite sunset when catching a train from the South Coast to Colombo.

One of the best sunset spots in Colombo is the Galle Face Hotel . However, Galle Face Green is very close by if you don’t want to visit a hotel. You will not be disappointed with the views of a Sri Lankan sunset in Colombo. Be prepared to see a fiery red sky!

Colombo has been a city of importance throughout Sri Lanka ’s long history. Therefore it is not surprising that to understand the different eras in Sri Lankan history, one only need visit Colombo. But Colombo is not only about the past. The city has been developing rapidly and the best feature of Colombo is how it has been able to integrate its past with its present. While there are many places to visit in Colombo for tourists, a few of them stand out, namely, the Gangaramaya Temple, Independence Memorial Hall, Jami-Ul-Alfar, Dehiwala Zoological Garden and the National Museum. Here is a detailed list of the most popular ones to explore while you are in the city.

National Museum

National Museum: Tourist Places To Visit In Colombo

A beautiful building resembling Italian architecture stands majestically in a part of Colombo with many such respectable spectacles. This 19th century building is home to some of the most important artefacts of Sri Lankan History. From ancient Sri Lankan scripts, they have on display old manuscripts, statues, carvings, medieval art, masks and an endless list of fascinating antiques. From the colonial era, the most prized possession is the jewelled crown and throne of the Kandyan Kings. They also exhibit guns and other weapons from this era. The museum is, however, not just cultural; there are specimens of a number of interesting flora and fauna as well.

Dutch Period Museum

Dutch Period Museum: Tourist Places To Visit In Colombo

The complex that houses the Dutch museum has, in the past, served many purposes. The 17th century building was originally the residence of the then governor and thanks to its history, was restored and opened up to the public as a museum dedicated to the Dutch era. The museum is well organised and paints a vivid picture of the said period. They take you through paintings, maps, coins, models of ships as well as artefacts like furniture that were in use in Sri Lanka during their arrival.

Gangaramaya Temple

Gangaramaya Temple: Tourist Places To Visit In Colombo

By the side of the Beira Lake, is one of the most visited temples in Colombo. The beautiful and complex temple compound includes all the usual elements like the main temple, an assembly hall and many intricate statues decked in expensive jewellery. But there is a lot more to the complex than that. Between the clusters of buildings is a Bo Tree, adorned with prayer flags, which can be directly traced back to the original Bodhi Tree. There is also a museum displaying Buddhist relics. Interestingly, with all the antiques, ivory statues, regal furniture and vintage cars, the whole complex may feel like an extended museum. Something worth appreciating here is the architecture, which is an interesting mix of Sri Lankan, Indian and Thai. The detailed engravings on the wall, depicting the life of The Buddha, also deserves special mention.

Independence Memorial Hall

To commemorate their independence, an elaborate building with massive columns and an architectural design that resembles the ancient audience hall of the Kandyan Kings was established. The Independence Memorial Hall, as it is called, is filled with symbols that justify the name. The ferocious lions are from the ancient Yapahuwa Kingdom, the wood carvings on the pillars are from the Gampola Kingdom and so on. There is also a museum within the building dedicated to independence heroes. Besides the stunning architecture, the hall is surrounded by vast quiet lawns that are a great relief from the bustle of the city.

Arcade Independence Square

Within the building is a shopper’s paradise, with branded stores, eateries and a Cineplex. If you decide to visit the Independence Memorial Hall, then this should be on the list as well.

Old City Hall

The many columns only add to the vintage vibe of the place. Within the building many objects are still preserved, like a map of 18th century Colombo, type-writers, vintage trucks and so on. The tinted glass windows accentuate the other-worldly feeling that accompanies visitors to this municipal building.

One such treasure is the Jami-Ul-Alfar also known as the Red Mosque thanks to its elaborate red and white candy stripped walls. 13 Best One-Day Trips from Colombo

When narrowing down these day trips from Colombo, we chose not to include some beautiful places in Sri Lanka that were more than 4 hours away from the city. This amount of time in the car, in our opinion, is not worth a day trip but rather a multi-day excursion.

Jump to “Multi-day trips from Colombo”

We also left out some popular day trips in Sri Lanka for ethical reasons (like Pinnawala Elephant Sanctuary) or because we feel that they are slightly overrated (like Unawatuna Beach & Negombo).

We hope that narrowing down these excursions makes it easier for you to decide what is worth your time and energy!

So without further ado, here are 12 of the best one-day trip places near Colo mbo :

#1 – Sigiriya Rock Fortress

Sigiriya Rock Fortress - one day trip places near colombo

Book a tour of Sigiriya Rock Fortress HERE!

Sigiriya Rock Fortress (Also known as Lion’s Rock) is a massive monolith dropped right in the center of the Sri Lankan plains. This phenomenon is understandably one of the most popular places to visit in Sri Lanka. It is great for adventure travelers, hikers, and history buffs.

At the top of Sigiriya Rock, you can experience stunning views and the ancient ruins of a 5th-century royal palace. The ancient city has lots of other preserved ruins, but this massive granite rock palace is the main attraction.

The climb to the top of Sigiriya takes roughly one hour to complete, and the entrance fee is about $30/per person.

Sigiriya is quite a far distance from Colombo, at 180 kilometers (3.5 hours by car). You can read more about how to get from Colombo to Sigiriya here, in case you want to visit for a couple of days!

Best Time To Visit Sigiriya Rock

The best time to visit Sigiriya and Dambulla is between January and September. This is when the cultural triangle (Sigiriya, Dambulla, & Anuradhapura) experiences the least amount of rainfall.

If you travel in June or July, it will be HOT. Bring lots of water on the hike and try to get to Sigiriya as early as possible.

How to Book a Tour

The best value for your money would be to Book this Colombo to Sigiriya Day Tour , which is a little more expensive, but it includes your tickets to Lion’s Rock and included a village cultural experience, where you will participate in a fishing boat ride, bullock cart ride, and a Sri Lankan cooking class in one trip!

#2 – Temple of the Sacred Tooth & Kandy Town

Temple of the Sacred Tooth - Kandy

Book a tour of Temple of the Sacred Tooth HERE!

Kandy is a popular tourist city in the foothills of Sri Lanka’s hill country. It is much cooler than Colombo (in temperature and scenery), making it a popular city for tourists to spend a few days and digital nomads to base themselves on for a few months.

If you do not have time to actually stay the night in Kandy, it is only 3 hours from Colombo by car or train. You should absolutely take a day trip to go and see the highlights of Kandy, including the Royal Botanical Gardens, Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Kandy Lake, shopping, and tons of delicious cafes and restaurants .

day trips from Kandy, Sri Lanka - Royal Botanical Gardens

The Royal Botanical Gardens are wonderful. We did not expect to enjoy them as much as we did, but we spent all morning in the gardens without getting bored. They have a huge variety of plant species and flower gardens, but the most beautiful sections of all were the three palm groves. It is 100% worth the time and effort to come here!

The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is the most famous part of Kandy. It is believed that the temple holds the actual tooth of The Buddha, kept safe in a seven-layer, two-story casket inside the temple.

While this is the most significant part of the temple, the grounds are also beautiful to explore, and the exterior makes for great photos!

The Queens Hotel & Kandy Lake: The Queens Hotel is a colonial-era historical hotel that sits across from the Temple of the Scared Tooth Relic. The temple is fully functional and a very popular place to photograph in Kandy.

Adjacent to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and the Queens Hotel is Kandy Lake. The lake is a nice place to take a stroll and has some nice viewpoints along the way.

Best Time to Visit Kandy

Kandy, Sri Lanka, is affected moderately by both monsoon seasons in Sri Lanka. You can expect some rain during all months of the year, but the driest season tends to be from December to May . Kandy is also at a higher elevation, so you should pack a long-sleeved shirt and pants for the cooler evenings in Kandy.

The best tour from Kandy is this Kandy Day Tour From Colombo . It includes a guided tour of the Royal Botanical Gardens, shopping district, and Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, as well as complete transportation to and from the city of Kandy from Colombo.

If you want to save some money, you can consider finding your own transportation to/from Kandy and book this Full-Day Tour starting in Kandy.

#3 – Galle, Fort & Stilt Fishing

Book a trip to Galle Fort HERE!

The historic city of Galle and Galle Fort are some of the best places to visit from Colombo City. The Galle Fort is over 400 years old and is one of the many UNESCO World Heritage Sights in Sri Lanka.

The city of Galle is also famous for European-influenced architecture, great shopping, and wonderful restaurants on the coast. If you are interested in Ceylon gems and jewelry, Galle would be a great place to shop for a piece to take home.

Stilt-fishing is a famed local profession in Galle. While it is no longer used in a practical sense, today, stilt-fishing in Sri Lanka is a performance for travelers, providing insight into the history of traditional Sri Lankan fishing.

Best Time to Visit Galle Fort

The best time of year to take a day trip from Colombo to Galle is from late December to April, but the shoulder seasons (May and November) can be a decent time to visit, depending on the year.

This is the highest-rated day tour from Colombo by a long shot . You will spend time at Bentota Beach, see the Turtle Hatchery in Hikkaduwa, explore Galle Fort, and see the historic art of stilt-fishing in Ahanagama.

#4 – Dambulla Cave Temple And Royal Temple

Dambulla Cave Temple - day trip from Kandy and day trip from Colombo

Book a day trip to Dambulla Cave Temple HERE!

The town of Dambulla is famous for its two gorgeous temples.

The Dambulla Cave Temple is an amazing temple complex built into a cave on the outskirts of Dambulla. The entrance fee to the temple is only a few dollars, and after climbing the stairs up to the temple entrance, visitors are rewarded with an intricate architectural complex to walk around.

At the base of the small mountain below the cave is the Golden Temple in Dambulla . The Golden Temple is known for its massive, golden Buddha statue and colorful palace at its foot. This temple is in the same complex (and therefore included in the price) as the Dambulla Cave Temple.

Best time to Visit Dambulla Cave Temple

Dambulla is one point of the cultural triangle, and therefore (similar to Sigiriya), there is no BAD time to visit. However, the best time is between January – April.

There are several day tours that visit the Dambulla/Sigiriya area from Colombo. Many, but not all, include Dambulla Cave and Royal Temple. We recommend pairing the temple with Lion’s Rock in this awesome day tour with Viator . This allows you to see three of the coolest attractions in this part of the country!

#5 – Kitugala White Water Rafting

Book a white water rafting trip in Kitugala HERE!

Kitugala is one of the adventure capitals of Sri Lanka, and it is only 2.5 hours from Colombo. In Kituagala, you are able to find tours that will take you hiking through the rainforest or trekking to waterfalls, but the most popular reason people go to Kitugala is for White Water Rafting!

Best Time to Visit Kitugala

The Kitugala region is the wettest region of Sri Lanka because the town is heavily affected by both monsoon seasons in Sri Lanka. For the very best chance of good weather, try to come during late winter (January to March) .

We found the most affordable and highly-rated white water rafting tours in Kitugala on Viator. Feel free to click the link for our recommended tour or explore Viator for more options.

#6 – The Ancient City of Anuradhapura

stupas in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka

Book a day trip to Anuradhapura HERE!

Another amazing historical sight that you can visit on a day trip from Colombo is the ancient capital city of Anuradhapura.

This city is home to some of the largest stupas in the world, as well as an entire ancient city that has been excavated and preserved. You can rent a bicycle and explore miles of building foundations, bathhouses, moonstones, religious monuments, wells, and more.

The entry fee for Anuradhapura is $25 , and most people take the whole day to learn about the history of the city first-hand.

Slightly northeast of the city is a famous peak called Mintahale. This is considered to be the birthplace of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, and it is a popular pairing for day trips from Colombo to Anuradhapura .

Best Time to Visit Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura is the third point in the Sri Lankan cultural triangle (with Sigiriya and Dambulla). Any time between January and September would be a great time to visit, with the exception of June and July, as they are the hottest months of the year.

You can check the prices of a day trip from Colombo to Anuradhapura here . Most tours include transportation and meals, but unfortunately, they usually do not include the entrance fee to the ruins.

#7 – Ambuluwawa Biodiversity Complex

colombo district travel places

You may have already seen some of the jaw-dropping pictures on Instagram of people climbing the stairs to the top of Ambuluwawa Tower . We can assure you that it is definitely one of the most beautiful places in Sri Lanka for a one-day trip.

The multi-religious complex is dominated by a spiraling staircase that comes to a point that is thousands of feet above the Gampola. The actual structure itself is not quite as tall as we thought it would be, but the views surpassed all our expectations.

Ambuluwawa Tower is a long drive from Colombo, at 3 hours, but it ended up being one of the best experiences we had in the country. It’s absolutely worth a day trip if you will be staying in Colombo for a few days.

Best Time to Visit Ambuluwawa Tower

Ambuluwawa is affected by the same climate and seasons as Kandy. You can expect it to be temperate throughout the year, with the best weather from December to April and the most rainfall coming between June and October.

There are no day tours to book online for Ambuluwawa Tower, but if you day a tour to Kandy and rent a motorbike, you can visit very easily on your own!

#8 – Pidurangala Rock

colombo district travel places

Book a day trip to Pidurangala Rock HERE!

Earlier, we talked about the Lion’s Rock Fortress in Sigiriya, which is an astounding place to see up close at the top. However, the BEST view of Lion’s Rock is actually from the top of Pidurangala Rock.

This was definitely the highlight of Dambulla/Sigiriya for us. Our advice is to give Pidurangala Rock a definite spot in your itinerary while traveling in Sri Lanka.

Most travelers hike to the top of Pidurangala Rock to watch the sunrise over Sigiriya. The rock is not too hard of a climb, and once you are finished, you have the entire day to explore the rest of Sigiriya!

Best Time to Visit Pidurangala Rock

Pidurangala Rock is in Sigiriya, so the best time to visit is between January and October, just like Lion’s Rock Fortress and Dambulla Cave Temple.

This Sigiriya + & Pidurangala Rock tour is an excellent tour option from Colombo if you are interested in visiting Pidurangala Rock!

#9 – Take a National Park Safari

Wilpatu Safari - Day trips from Colombo

Book a Safari day trip from Colombo HERE!

Another popular thing to do in Sri Lanka is to take a wildlife safari at one of the national parks! There are so many national parks throughout the country!

Unfortunately, some of the most popular safaris in Sri Lanka—Yala and Uduwalawe National Park—are over 5 hours from Colombo. This is a little too far for a day trip… unless you are willing to drive a whole 10 hours for a one-day trip, It’s not worth it.

No worries! Fortunately, there are 4 other National Parks in Sri Lanka located just a few hours north and east of Colombo! These national parks would easily make a fun one-day trip from Colombo .

Minneriya National Park / Kaudulla National Park / Habarana National Park

Heading towards Sigiriya, there are 3 national parks close together; Kaudulla National Park, Minneriya National Park , and Habarana National Parks . These parks actually have the densest population of elephants in the country. Visit these parks between J uly through October to witness ‘the gathering’. At this time of year, all of the elephants migrate to Minneriya National Park as other water sources in the area dry up.

Pazook Tip: Be sure to ask around to see which national park has the most wildlife action. This changes throughout the year, but it’s unpredictable. The local tour guides will be able to tell you which tour is best whenever you are actually in Sri Lanka.

Wilpattu National Park

Wilpattu is another really popular national park not too far from Colombo. This park is becoming more popular as an alternative to the busy national parks in the South and around Sigiriya. This is actually the only place outside of Yala National Park where you can see leopards in their natural habitat.

If you take a safari through Wilpattu, you will also see peacocks, foxes, water buffalo, and a variety of beautiful birds!

colombo district travel places

Best Time To Take A Safari

The best time to visit is between July and October when hundreds of elephants gather in Minneriya/Kaudulla National Park. Northern Sri Lanka is affected by the northeast monsoon, so it is best to avoid this region between October and January. The weather at the northern national parks is similar to Wilpattu National Park.

The cheapest tours to these three national parks are from Sigiriya. However, you can book a day trip from Colombo as well. These tours include transportation, a meal, and usually a couple of other stops along the way.

Minneriya National Park Safari (unavailable for the summer) – The most well-known National Park and home to ‘the gathering’ of elephants each summer in Sri Lanka is Minneriya National Park. This national park is one of the few reservoirs that stays green throughout the dry season.

Kaudulla National Park Safari – This national park is right next to Minneriya National Park, and elephants frequently travel between the two parks throughout the year. Ask locals for advice on which park to visit to see the elephants since they migrate back and forth.

Habarana National Park (Hurulu Eco Park) – At certain times of the year, the elephants will migrate away from Minneriya and Kaudulla National Parks to a third National Park nearby called Habarana National Park. There is a section of Habarana National Park called Hurulu Eco Park, which is where we took a safari and saw tons of elephants, birds, and peacocks.

Willpattu National Park – If you want to take a safari at Wilpattu National Park, you should book with Big Game Camp. This is a super unique experience where you get to go glamping in the National Park! They will take you on a half-day safari and a night walk throughout your luxury camping experience.

We actually had a poor experience on our day tour of Wilpattu National Park because of a bad tour guide. Later on, we discovered that the best safari experience in Wilpattu is with Big Game Camp . So now we are recommending them to you!

#10 – Adam’s Peak Sunrise Hike (overnight)

Adam's Peak- Day trips from Colombo

Book a day trip to Adam’s Peak HERE!

Adam’s Peak is one of the most sacred places in all Sri Lanka. It is a coveted pilgrimage that has made it onto a lot of Sri Lanka bucket lists over the years.

Although the hike is extremely popular, it is also very difficult. The hike for sunrise involves starting around 2:00 am and hiking over 5000 steps to the top.

The entirety of the hike takes between 4-6 hours, depending on your experience. It takes 3-4 hours to get to the top, then 1-2 hours to get down.

Most hikers try to get down the mountain by 9 am before the heat of the day sets in.

The hike is well-lit and easy to follow, so you do not necessarily need a tour guide to lead you up the mountain, just a ride to the base of the hike and someone to wait on you for the morning, so you have a ride back to Colombo.

The ‘night trips’ begin around 10 pm from Colombo. The drive to Nallathaniya is slightly over 4 hours.

When you get to the base of the mountain, you can eat a late meal and begin hiking straight away. The tour driver will find a place to sleep for the night (or maybe he will hike along with you), then drive you back the next morning when you get back down the mountain.

Even though the hike is rigorous, it is SO worth it. The sunrise from the top of Adam’s Peak was the most beautiful sunrise we have ever seen! We would consider this one of the most beautiful places in Sri Lanka for a one-day trip!

Pazook Tip: you can also travel to Adam’s Peak as a one-day trip from Kandy .

Best Time to Visit Adam’s Peak

You can only hike Adam’s Peak safely between December – April . This is the pilgrimage season. Outside of these months, it is too rainy to safely climb to the top of the peak.

Adam’s Peak is 147 kilometers from Colombo. By car, this is about 4-5 hours. When looking for a day trip, it is worth taking a day tour that includes transportation.

This day trip from Colombo to Adam’s Peak is the best we could find!

#11 – Hikkaduwa Beach & Sea Turtles

Book a day trip to Hikkaduwa HERE!

The best place to go swimming and snorkeling on the east coast of Sri Lanka is Hikkaduwa Beach. It is also a great place to go surfing or simply relax in the sun.

Hikkaduwa is also widely known for its Turtle Hatchery & Rescue Center . You can visit the hatchery to learn about sea turtles and even watch them be released back into the ocean once they are old enough.

This is not necessarily the best beach in Sri Lanka (like the beaches in Trincomalee ), but it is very laid-back, really beautiful, and easily one of the most accessible beaches from Colombo.

Best Time to Visit Hikkaduwa Beach

The best time to visit Hikkaduwa is when the southeast monsoon season is over. The monsoon ends in mid-December, and Hikkaduwa stays sunny and dry until mid-May. Therefore, visiting the beach town in the early spring is best for surfing, sunbathing, and snorkeling.

If you want the complete experience of Hikkaduwa, then this day tour from Colombo will hit all the major places in the town, from a boat trip on Hikkaduwa Lagoon in the morning to a Seafood BBQ buffet in the evening.

For travelers most interested in the Turtle Hatchery, the best bang for your buck is to book the Day Tour from Colombo to Galle with a pit stop at the Turtle Hatchery in Hikkaduwa and a River Cruise in Bentota.

These two tours are great, but if you want to save some money, consider taking the train to Hikkaduwa and booking a simple snorkeling tour for just $30 (not bookable in the summer).

#12 – Laxapana & Aberdeen Waterfalls

Laxapana Falls - day trips from Colombo

Two of the best waterfalls in Sri Lanka were actually fairly close to Colombo.

Laxapana Falls and Aberdeen Waterfall are both only a couple of hours from Colombo (near Adam’s Peak). These waterfalls are two of our personal favorites in Sri Lanka, and the best part is that they are practically crowd-free!

The hike is not easy for either of the waterfalls, but they are also not too difficult for someone who is in decent shape. If you have time, you should definitely take a day tour of Laxapana and Aberdeen Waterfall.

Best Time to Visit Laxapana & Aberdeen Falls

Like most of the day trips near Colombo, the best weather is from December to April.

There really are no official tours from Colombo to Laxapana Falls or Aberdeen Waterfall, but you can hire a private car charter from Colombo or rent a Tuk-Tuk and visit these waterfalls on a private day trip of your own.

How to Book One-Day Tours from Colombo

When scanning through the popular one-day trips from Colombo, you will find that there are very few one-off tours. Most day tours will try to combine multiple excursions into one tour in order to make the most of the trip.

Most travelers are excited about this, and it gives them an opportunity to see more of the island without extra time commuting.

If you do not want to book a tour that only goes to one destination, we recommend hiring a private driver for the day . This way, you can create your own itinerary and can come and go as you wish.

Interested in hiring a private driver in Sri Lanka?

Our Top Tour Booking Sites

If you are interested in booking a proper day tour, here are three quality companies to consider doing business with;

Viator – Viator is owned and operated by TripAdvisor, the largest travel company on the market. As you may expect, this means that Viator has the largest variety of tours and operators to choose from. There are countless options for day tours around Colombo for all different budgets.

Get Your Guide – We actually did not start using this website until recently because it tends to be more expensive than the other tour guide websites on the market. However, this is probably because they are a bit more selective on which tours they will promote on their website. Ultimately, you will get more for the value. You can be sure that any tour found on Get Your Guide is from one of the best tour groups in Sri Lanka.

Klook.com – Klook used to be our go-to tour guide booking platform. However, this company is based out of Hong Kong, and unfortunately, we have noticed increasingly less variety on the website over the past few years.

Colombo Multi-Day Tours

If you are up for it, you can travel to farther parts of Sri Lanka or see a bunch of different places in one trip on a Multi-Day Tour from Colombo. The nice part about this is that they are all-inclusive, so you do not have to worry about finding a place to stay, preparing meals, or having to book tickets train/bus around the country.

Here are a few of the best multi-day tours from Colombo:

All-Inclusive 2-Day Sri Lanka Tour – This overnight experience includes one jeep safari in Yala National Park, Rawana Falls, Nine Arches Bridge, Little Adam’s Peak, a Tea Garden tour, and a stop at Ramboda Falls on your way back to Colombo!

4-Day Cultural Heritage Tour from Colombo (not bookable in summer) – Visit Dambulla, Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa, and Kandy in 4 days on this all-inclusive multi-day tour from Colombo.

Complete Sri Lanka 8-Day Tour – This tour has everything. You will visit Dambulla, Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Yala National Park, and Mirissa Beach before concluding the trip back to Colombo!

Where to stay in colombo.

If you are going to base yourself in Colombo, you are going to need to know where to stay in Colombo . The best area to be in is near Viharamhadevi Park. This is also referred to as District 7, and it is the nicest area in Colombo. It is also where the government leaders live, so the streets are kept clean, and during the power cuts of early 2022, it was the only place in the city that never lost power.

Colombo government building

Almost all of the places worth visiting in Colombo are within walking distance (or a short drive) from this area, as well as the best cafes in Colombo to find coffee and brunch each day.

Here are three great hotels in Colombo for every travel budget :

Budget Hotel in Colombo – New Colombo Guest Hotel

colombo district travel places

Check Availability and Current Prices HERE!

C1 Colombo Fort Hotel is at the heart of Colombo, in a perfect location for exploring the best parts of the city, and also within walking distance from the train station, where you can take day trips to places all around Sri Lanka!

This hotel is usually between $20-40 per night (depending on the season), making it one of the most affordable places for budget travelers in Sri Lanka. The rooms are spacious and clean, and there are hostel beds for ultra-budget travelers.

Mid-Range Hotel in Colombo- Wonder Hotel

colombo district travel places

If you have a little more to budget for a stay in Colombo, then we would recommend booking a room at Wonder Hotel . There is a rooftop pool, lounge chairs, and even a sky bar for guests to enjoy.

Additionally, Wonder Hotel is in the perfect location for Colombo. It is close to the Galle Face, for a view of the ocean, yet still walking distance from all of the best parts of the city.

The only negative feedback that this hotel receives is that it does not offer free breakfast. That said, it is actually hard to find a quality hotel in Colombo that does.

Luxury Hotel in Colombo – Movenpick Hotel Colombo

colombo district travel places

Movenpick Hotel in Colombo might be the best place to stay in the city for under $100/night. This beautiful hotel has rooms with a view, professional staff, and four delicious restaurants to choose from if you want to eat at the hotel or order room service.

The rooftop is equipped with an infinity pool, and it is also just two blocks from the ocean. This is the best place to splurge in Colombo.

Hostel in Colombo – Hostel at Galle Face

colombo district travel places

For solo travelers taking one-day trips from Colombo, you should consider grabbing a bunk at the Hostel at Galle Face . This hostel is only $11/night and puts you in a prime location to explore Colombo, as well as the rest of the island nation.

The Hostel at Galle Face has free breakfast, A/C, and even free Wi-fi throughout the property. You will also have access to a kitchen area if you want to cook your own food and a terrace with a comfortable lounge space for relaxing.

Colombo FAQS

To be honest, Colombo is not worth visiting unless you have extended time in Sri Lanka. The main reason for this is that we believe that there are much better things to do and see in other areas of Sri Lanka.

There truly is not a whole lot to do in the city, and the best things to see in Sri Lanka are in other parts of the country. Consider only spending about 1-2 days in Colombo (or none at all) if you are interested in the city.

Yes, you can wear shorts in Colombo. However, it is respectful to cover your knees (and shoulders) when entering sacred historical sites and temples around Sri Lanka.

Although Colombo has seen some recent civil unrest, overall, it is a safe place for tourists to visit. There are some areas that felt less safe (such as the neighborhood northeast of Pettah), but the main sections of the city and tourist centers are safe.

Colombo is not a very expensive city. Generally, you can find all of the food you need, plus a decent guesthouse for less than $50 per day. Transportation is also inexpensive if you walk or take tuk-tuks around the city.

How to Get Around Colombo

Colombo is a very busy city with a ton of traffic. So much so that we do not recommend renting a car in Colombo . It would take too long to get around and may stress you out to the max.

To get around Colombo City, you should consider walking or calling a tuk-tuk driver to get from one place to another.

tuk-tuk in Colombo, Sri Lanka

Hail a Tuk-tuk Around Colombo

Tuk-tuks are everywhere in Colombo. You can hail a driver by holding your arm out toward the street like a taxi. The base rate for tuk-tuks is usually 50 LKR per Kilometer . This will be higher if there is excessive traffic, but make sure to agree on a price before stepping into the tuk-tuk. Drivers often overcharge tourists.

If you want to skip the haggling and stress altogether, there is a local ride-sharing app called Pick.me . This app is similar to Uber, so you can call a taxi to come and pick you up for a set price from anywhere in Colombo. This app is very user-friendly, but you do need a Sri Lankan phone number to sign up.

We highly recommend getting a SIM card for your phone in Sri Lanka so that you have access to data usage around the island as well. They do not cost very much and are very simple to activate.

Drive your own tuk-tuk

If you are interested in taking any of these day trips from Colombo and want to drive yourself, then consider renting a tuk-tuk in Sri Lanka. Driving your own tuk-tuk is a super unique experience, and it was super fun to travel from one city to the next by driving a Tuk-tuk on our own!

If you are interested in renting your own tuk-tuk in Sri Lanka, do not hesitate to visit tuktukrental.com!

Weather in colombo, sri lanka.

Since Colombo is on the east coast of Sri Lanka, the monsoon season comes from late April to early November. It is not ideal to travel to Colombo during this time. Some day trips like Adam’s Peak and Kitugala would be difficult to visit during these months.

If you will be visiting Colombo, it is best to come between December and April to avoid the rainy monsoon season, but this does not mean that the city is any less hot! Colombo is exceptionally hot and humid for the majority of the year.

In fact, many of the day trips from Colombo mentioned above are going to be just as hot during this time.

The only exception to this is Adam’s Peak, Kandy , and Ambuluwawa Tower . These places are far enough in the hills of Sri Lanka that they cool off quite a bit. Make sure to bring a jacket (a rain jacket would be best) if you plan to take one of these day trips from Colombo.

Packing for Colombo Day Trips

Sri lanka weather and how to pack.

Since the weather is different in various regions of the country, packing for Sri Lanka can be confusing. It is hot at the beach but can be chilly in the mountains. You might pack differently depending on where you are planning to go and when.

special items to pack for Sri Lanka

  • Hiking Sandals or Hiking Boots – We use Chaco’s Sandals for easy hikes, but you might want to bring some proper hiking boots! Our recommendations: Oboz Sawtooth X Mid B-Dry Hiking Boots or Oboz Bridger Mid B-Dry Hiking Boot – Men’s
  • Universal Plug Adaptor – Sometimes Sri Lanka hotels have universal adaptors, but we HIGHLY recommend that you have one on hand for when this isn’t the case.
  • External Battery Pack – This is absolutely essential. You do NOT want to get stuck with a dead phone in Sri Lanka. This Belkin Battery works really well.
  • GRAYL Water Purifying Bottle – This water-purifying bottle is perfect for filtering tap water
  • Quick-dry Towel – Quick-dry towels are very useful for hiking, snorkeling, camping, or just to use around the hotel.

Our Camera Gear

Traveling through Sri Lanka was absolutely amazing! We are so glad that we invested in nice camera gear so that we could beautifully capture all of the memories. For photos and video in Sri Lanka, we used a Sony A7rii Mirrorless Camera, GoPro Hero 7, and DJI Mini 2 Drone.

Sony A7rii Mirrorless Camera – If you love travel photography and are sick of using your iPhone, this camera is truly a game-changer.

GoPro Hero 8 Black – GoPro just keeps getting better with its action camera features. The most recent editions are UNREAL.

DJI Mini 4 – The drone has been one of the coolest progressions of travel video and photography. While drones can be incredibly expensive, the DJI Mini 2 is a great affordable option for beautiful imaging.

Sri Lanka does require that you register your drone if it is over 250 grams , but the DJI Mini 2 is just below this threshold! It is a very affordable drone and has wonderful video quality that can be downloaded straight to your phone!

Final Thoughts…

There are so many awesome day trips to take from Colombo. If you find yourself stationed in the nation’s Capital for a while, consider exploring some other areas of Sri Lanka through one of these awesome tours!

The Snow World Theme Park and Viharamahadevi Park are great places if you are travelling with kids. For the adventure enthusiast in you, indulge in some scuba diving in Chief Dragon and The Sierra.
