Featured River, Small Ship and Land Journeys

Inspired by the destination.

For 90+ years, the Tauck family has had a passion for sailing — aboard small ships and yachts at sea, riverboats along great inland waterways, and at home on the rivers and lakes of Connecticut and New York. When we began blending our land experience with our strong passion for cruising in our first European river cruise back in 1992, we knew that no "ordinary" river cruise experience would do for our guests. We wanted them to travel Europe's rivers in the same beyond-the-ordinary Tauck style they experienced on our land trips. With that in mind, we searched to find a company to partner with that would share our values and our commitment to "do the right thing" by our guests... and found it in another family-owned company, Scylla. Together, we crafted a river cruise experience that was ahead of its time and inspired by the destinations we explore.

Guest Favorites in River Cruising

Along the Danube... the Rhine... the Rhône... the Seine... or the Douro... our European river cruises are all about the unique cultural access you'll enjoy wherever we visit... the strong connections you'll make with the people you'll meet... and the traditions and genuine little moments they'll share with you  along the way...

Tauck shares the basic facts you need about Europe's rivers – plus the history, culture and more.

Mediterranean Cruise Ports of Call

Discover some of the world-renowned destinations that await you on a Mediterranean cruise with Princess.

Rooted in Greek mythology, Athens is alive with stories from civilizations of the past. On a cruise to Europe departing from Athens, arrive early to tour the remains of ancient lores — like the Temple of Olympian Zeus and Acropolis — dine at the city’s lively tavernas and admire iconic sculptures bathed in natural light within the Acropolis Museum.

Until it was popularized by the 1992 Olympics, Barcelona was a hidden gem amidst Europe’s diverse landscapes. Now it’s widely recognized for its architectural masterpieces and spirited customs. On European cruises from Barcelona, leave enough time before you depart to visit Park Güell — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and feel inspired by the colors and unique artistry that lies in the park and throughout the entire city.

As one of the greenest islands in Greece, Corfu is an emerald treasure amidst the colorful Mediterranean landscape. From Paleokastritsa, hike to the mountaintop for unparalleled views of the Ionian Sea. Or get a taste of Corfu when you team up with a famous chef, and handpick local produce that they’ll use to prepare your lunch. Experience it all on a Greek cruise with Princess.

On a Mediterranean cruise to Livorno, travel to Florence or Pisa where artifacts abound. Capture snapshots of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, stop by Michelangelo’s David statue at the Accademia and walk up to the “Gates of Paradise” at the Baptistery. Or explore the countryside and meander through the region’s rolling hills that bear vineyards and green olive groves.

Nestled within Boka Bay lies a medieval gem. Kotor is enrobed in ancient houses, palaces and churches that speak to its 12th-century origins. On a Greek cruise, dine on Montenegrin cuisine in the home of a local chef, appreciate 14th-century Venetian art at St. Tryphon’s Cathedral and taste regional wines along the riviera. Or see another side of the city when you kayak through the tunnels of Lipa Cave.

As the largest port in the Mediterranean, Marseille is the gateway to opportunity. On a Mediterranean cruise, spend the day in Arles, and explore the landscapes that inspired much of Van Gogh’s artwork. Stroll through the MuSaMa, a soap museum, and create your own blend alongside a master soap maker. Or roam the city’s most popular landmark, Notre-Dame de la Garden, a Catholic basilica that overlooks the city.

Famous for its beaches and spirited lifestyle, Mykonos is the heartbeat of Greece. Embark on a jeep safari past the city’s windmills, lighthouses and lakes. Walk past temples and marble-lined sanctuaries in Delos, the birthplace of famous Greek gods. Or soak up a day of relaxation on the beach with the city’s Cycladic architecture as your backdrop — all on a Greek cruise with Princess.

Italy’s capital city is something of a dream. Grand chapels and stone angels line the roads, whispering secrets of Rome’s past. On a cruise to Europe from Rome, arrive early to toss a coin into Trevi Fountain. Legend has it, you’ll be guaranteed return to The Eternal City. Then walk in the footsteps of Emperors at the Colosseum, and receive a blessing from the Pope at St. Peter’s Square.

Santorini is the epitome of Greece. Wander into the welcoming cafes in Oia, a village teeming with whitewashed buildings and blue-domed roofs. Continue to some of the world’s oldest vineyards and taste the bouquet of wines produced on the island, making sure to visit the black-sand beach of Kamari before heading back to your Mediterranean cruise ship.

Why Cruise the Mediterranean

In lands where the culture is as flavorful as the cuisine, the splendor of the Mediterranean speaks for itself.

World-Class Dining

Captivating cuisine

With mouthwatering entrees and confections, the Mediterranean invites you to embark on a gourmet tour through iconic cities. Reawaken your taste buds with Italian classics like pastas, pizzas and gelato. Or fill your plate with gyros, keftethes and baklava on a Greek cruise. From breakfast to dinner and every delectable dessert in between, the best is before you with Princess.

Bold reds and crisp whites

The countryside of Italy and Greece are home to some of the most flavorful wines around the globe. With sun and warm temperatures year-round, vineyards are flourishing with grapes by the harvest season. Sip on Italy’s red wines, or sample Greece’s white blends. From sweet Lambruscos to earthy Bordeauxs, fill up your glass on a Mediterranean cruise with Princess.

Ancient Ruins

Where history comes to life

From towers and temples to cities and shorelines, the Mediterranean is sprinkled with remains of civilizations past. Step back in time on a tour through ancient ruins on a Mediterranean cruise with Princess. Imagine life as a gladiator at the Colosseum, explore Greek mythology at the Parthenon and discover the archeological excavations of Pompeii — a lost city and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Art Galleries & Museums

Artistic ingenuity abounds

From the treasures on land to the jewels within museums, the Mediterranean is a true work of art. On an Italian cruise, see portraits from the Renaissance period at the Uffizi Museum in Florence, and admire Michelangelo’s masterpieces at the Vatican Museum in Rome. Or walk in the footsteps of celebrated artists that called these regions home — like Picasso and Dali — and allow their work to spark your creativity.

Sun-Kissed Beaches

A vision of natural beauty

Visions of sparkling coasts and crystalline waters welcome you to the Mediterranean. Dip your toes on the black-sand coast of Santorini on a Greek cruise. Head to Salerno to spend the day in Positano relaxing on the white beaches and admiring the pastel houses that decorate the cliffs around you. Or travel to Mykonos with your loved ones and daydream on the city’s long stretch of golden sand and stroll in the sunshine.

Mediterranean excursions

Our award-winning Mediterranean cruise shore excursions bring you to iconic beaches, landmarks and ancient artifacts. See the yacht-lined shores of Kotor while riding on a tuk tuk, an electric rickshaw. Savor the flavors of “Koum Kouat” liqueur, created from Corfu’s exclusive citrus plant. Or stroll along the streets of Dubrovnik’s Old town, one of the most well-preserved medieval cities in the world.

Local connections

From chefs and beverage makers to artists and guides, meet the many personalities that call the Mediterranean home with our Local Connections program. On a Mediterranean cruise, voyage to an olive tree farm just outside of Provence, and join your hosts for a unique olive oil tasting. Or explore the Archaeological Museum of Naples with a local artist, and accompany them for lunch to dive even deeper in Italy’s art scene.

More ashore

Enjoy even more opportunities to experience the colors, cultures and flavors of the Mediterranean with More Ashore late-night departures and overnight stays. Witness the beautiful sunset in Mykonos on a Greek cruise. Sit front-row for a flamenco dance, and savor a paella dinner during an evening in Barcelona. Or stroll the illuminated streets of Genoa with gelato in hand after a traditional Italian dinner.

Mediterranean Cruise Onboard Experience

Curated comfort, world-class entertainment and international flavors await you.

The Best All-Inclusive Cruises in 2023: Luxe Voyages to Italy, Japan, Iceland, and South America

By Janice Wald Henderson

Silversea Silver Cloud

Imagine indulging nonstop in champagne, caviar, and lobster every day aboard a cruise—and not needing to pay one cent extra. All-inclusive cruises make fantasies like these reality by bundling many luxurious amenities into the voyage fare. And savvy cruisers know that the perk-laden, all-inclusive itineraries make for the most lavish, stress free vacations.

Plus, there’s no need to worry about getting your money’s worth, as most luxury lines offer benefits for every type of traveler, from personal butlers, 24-hour room service, and complimentary spa treatments, to top-shelf liquor, business-class airfare, and fee-free shore excursions. Add enticing destinations like Japan, Iceland, and Northern Africa to the mix, and the fact that it all happens aboard some of the most stylish and boutique ships at sea, and you can see why all-inclusive itineraries are some of the most popular in the cruise industry.

Read on for everything you need to know about all-inclusive cruises, from booking tips to some of our favorite itineraries.

Is there such a thing as an all-inclusive cruise?

All-inclusive cruises definitely exist, primarily on luxury cruise lines and some upper-premium lines. Award-winning luxury lines Regent Seven Seas, Seabourn, and Silversea , all with multiple ships, offer the most inclusions in cruise fares. Upper-premium cruise lines, particularly award-winning Viking, bundle more amenities into cruise prices than other non-luxury lines.

What’s in an all-inclusive cruise?

All-inclusive cruising is a rather tricky term, as each cruise line offering them puts their own spin on the definition. Luxury cruising delivers the most inclusive voyages, typically bundling dining, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, Wi-Fi, 24-hour room service, port and tax fees, and gratuities into fares.

Some cruise lines bundle in even more enviable perks, such as airfare, either economy, chartered, or business class, airport-to-ship transfers, laundry service, most or all specialty dining, and most or all shore excursions. Sometimes, all-inclusive cruises have special offers to include a pre-cruise hotel night, or pre- or post-cruise land programs, including tours and hotel stays.

With the best, most all-inclusive cruises , the only extra charges typically appearing on a final bill are spa and salon treatments, private fitness training, premium alcohol, and purchases in boutiques or cigar lounges.

How much is an all-inclusive cruise?

All-inclusive cruises usually run between $500 to $1,500 per person per day. Multiple factors influence the pricing range: The line’s inclusion level, the competitiveness or exclusivity of the itinerary, and the itinerary date. It's less expensive to cruise during shoulder season, when the weather may be chillier or rainier, say May in Alaska or April on the Mediterranean , versus high season, when the weather is at its best. Price is also influenced if a ship is repositioning (an itinerary transiting from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean, for example), which also decreases costs. Consider expedition cruises the priciest as their costs are higher; they sail with multiple expedition experts and much excursion and scientific equipment, plus most or all shore excursions are included. Antarctic luxury sails requiring chartered flights to fly over the Drake Passage are the priciest, and can run up to $3000 per person per day.

What is the best cruise line to go with?

The best all-inclusive cruise lines for 2022 and beyond, in alphabetical order, are Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Scenic, Seabourn, Silversea, and Viking. All showcase stunning ships with all suites (other than Viking) and inviting public venues, and deliver impeccable service and excellent cuisine.

To assist in deciding which line would be your personal best, look hard at the itinerary and inclusions. For instance, if searching for an Alaskan cruise, know that shore excursions are vital to an in-depth experience. Look for a cruise line including most or all, as those additional costs rapidly add up. Regent Seven Seas and Silversea include most or all shore excursions, as do Scenic and Seabourn expedition ships.

If you primarily prefer exploring individually, like on a New England fall foliage or Caribbean cruise , you might care more about complimentary specialty dining in-suite and about the ship, and sipping free custom martinis poolside or in buzzy bars. Then select a Seabourn ocean liner, where shore excursions are not factored into pricing.

Are you a caviar devotee? Look to Seabourn and Silversea for offering free premium caviar, anytime, anywhere, beautifully presented with all the accouterments. If you’re a die-hard foodie idolizing superstar chef Thomas Keller of Napa’s French Laundry fame, choose Seabourn to feast on his dishes at Keller’s only at-sea restaurant and also on Keller-influenced plates in other dining venues.

Their ships are gorgeous—opulent, even—with multi-million dollar art collections, and dripping in elaborate hand-fashioned crystal chandeliers. Cruise fares include international business class airfare or economy on domestic flights, airport-ship transfers, all-suite accommodations, all dining including specialty restaurants, unlimited beverages including fine wines and spirits, valet laundry service, unlimited Wi-Fi, gratuities, and most shore excursions. In fact, you can take unlimited complimentary shore excursions in each port. In addition, RSSC offers a one-night complimentary pre-cruise hotel for passengers booked in concierge suites and higher. Special offers include free pre and post-land programs on select voyages.

Cultural wonders of Japan with Scenic

Scenic currently offers one “adventure yacht,”  Scenic Eclipse , with near-twin  Scenic Eclipse II  debuting in 2023. The sleek and glamorous expedition vessel feels most yacht-like among our best all-inclusive cruise list.

In June 2023, the Scenic Eclipse will voyage throughout Japan , visiting a total of eight cities in the country. Ports of call include Hakodate on the island of Hokkaido—where travelers can hike to the summit of active volcano Mt. Esan for spectacular views or visit the Hakodate Morning Market—as well as stops in Aomori, home to the world's largest virgin beech tree forest, and Hagi, known for its preserved castle town from the Edo era.

Among inclusions, count on all-suite accommodations with verandas or terraces, butler service for every passenger, up to 10 complimentary dining experiences, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages (including a stunningly sexy 100-bottle whisky bar), in-suite minibar stocked with passenger favorites, Wi-Fi, internal country flights, airport-to-ship transfers, all gratuities—even for shore excursions. The spa features many complimentary offerings, such as thermal loungers and meditation classes. As an expedition ship, exploration “toys,” such as Zodiacs, kayaks, and stand-up paddle boards, are complimentary. The only extra exploration fees are for submarine and helicopter rides.

Venice, the Adriatic, and Greece with Viking

Spend eight days cruising the Adriatic and Ionian seas aboard this Viking sailing, which visits four countries across six ports of call. After departing from Venice , one of Viking's ocean ships (several operate this itinerary) will visit Split and Dubrovnik in Croatia; Kotor, Montenegro; as well as Corfu and Katakolon in Greece, before docking in Athens.

As the sole upper-premium line on this list, Viking includes many luxury-line-level perks in the cruise fare. On ocean and expedition cruises, passengers receive one complimentary shore excursion in each port, 24-hour room service, Wi-Fi, specialty dining, soft drinks, beer and wine with lunch and dinner, specialty coffee drinks and tea. If purchasing airfare through Viking, ship transfers are also complimentary.

Viking’s complimentary spa access is a huge perk, as the Thermal Suite, which includes a steam, sauna, real snow grotto, whirlpool, cold-water splash and plunge pool, is a spa devotee’s dream-come-true. Also, staterooms are more upscale than on competitive premium lines. They feature king, not queen, beds, and oversized bathrooms with anti-fog mirrors, glass-enclosed showers, and heated bathroom floors.

Silversea's Arctic and Anarctic expedition sailings are part of its allinclusive cruise offerings.

Iceland, Faroe Islands, Scotland with Silversea

Sailing roundtrip from Reykjavík on board Silversea's newest addition to its fleet, Silver Endeavor , this two-week-long cruise checks off a whopping 19 ports across three countries, including Iceland, Scotland, and the Faroe Islands. Being a more boutique expedition ship, Silver Endeavor is able to ferry passengers to small ports, including Iceland's outer islands, like Vigor Island, home to the Isafjardardjup Fjord and migratory Atlantic puffin colonies.

Silversea delivers a chic Italian-inspired vibe, evoking a luxurious custom-designed Milano home. The line offers two styles of all-inclusive luxury cruising , “Port-to-Port” and “Door-to-Door.” Port-to-Port includes all-suite accommodations, shore excursions, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, butler service for all suites, Wi-Fi, gratuities and meals in most dining venues. Dining includes 24-hour room service served course-by-course. Complimentary premium caviar is available anywhere, anytime. Under the Port-to-Port category for Silversea’s expedition ships, passengers also receive in-country economy airfare, pre or post-cruise hotel day use or overnight and some expedition gear.

All Door-to-Door cruises add a few extras to all the above inclusions. International economy airfare (or air credit) and airport-to-ship transfers, and roundtrip transfers between home and airport by private car service are among them.

Seabourn is known for luxe all-inclusive cruise dining perks, like unlimited caviar.

Northwest Africa with Seabourn

Although this sailing departs in 2024, we included it in our list for 2023, as it's sure to sell out quickly. In March 2024, Seabourn will take its expedition ship, Seabourn Venture, to the Northwest coast of Africa for a unique two-week cruise ending in Spain. Departing from Cape Verde, the sailing includes stops in Banjul, Gambia; Dakar, Senegal ; Casablanca and Tangier in Morocco; and Malaga, Spain, among others.

Seabourn Venture includes all-suite accommodations and all other Seabourn complimentary amenities other than The Grill. Most shore excursions are complimentary. A second expedition ship, Seabourn Pursuit, will debut in 2023 with similar all-inclusive features.

A luxury line with an elegant casual country club ambiance, Seabourn offers numerous high-end inclusions, such as all-suite accommodations, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, Wi-Fi, specialty dining, 24-hour in-suite dining (served course-by-course, if desired), high-end caviar service anywhere, anytime, and gratuities. On Seabourn’s ocean liners, passengers also receive one complimentary dinner at The Grill by Thomas Keller, a restaurant deftly duplicating the world-famous chef’s cuisine, prepared with his favorite high-end ingredients. In addition, many Keller-influenced plates appear on other dining venue menus, such as in the Colonnade. Seabourn features a Mindful Living Program in collaboration with Dr. Andrew Weil, and passengers can take complimentary classes with practitioners trained by the esteemed doctor in meditation and yoga, among the options.

The Best All-Inclusive Cruises

Sit back and relax on an all-inclusive cruise vacation.

When it comes to all-inclusive cruises, there are a few different options:

  • Luxury cruise lines: All-inclusive cruise rates are available on luxury lines like Regent Seven Seas and Silversea. While more expensive than traditional cruise rates , the fares cover nearly everything, including door-to-door transfers, luxurious suite accommodations, specialty dining , premium alcoholic beverages and excursions. Plus, you don't need to show your cruise card every time you order a latte or a pre-dinner cocktail. You'll disembark the ship with very few, if any, additional charges on your final bill.
  • Cruise lines with inclusive pricing: Alternatively, you can consider an upscale cruise line like Viking, which offers fares with more-inclusive pricing and some of the amenities found on board the fully inclusive lines. However, you'll still have to budget for a few expenses, such as immersive excursions and alcoholic beverages beyond wine or beer at lunch and dinner.
  • Packages and add-ons: Other cruise lines like Oceania, Windstar and Norwegian offer add-on drink packages and other promos so you can create a more all-inclusive experience.

After comparing the costs between a truly all-inclusive cruise and a sailing with package pricing for the extras, the total price may be closer than you think.

With Regent's "every luxury included" philosophy and 2-for-1 all-inclusive fares, passengers receive round-trip airfare and transfers between the airport and ship, as well as unlimited shore excursions, two- or three-night land programs (based on the itinerary), and a complimentary pre-cruise hotel package for concierge suites and higher. On the ship, enjoy a fully stocked in-suite minibar; specialty dining; unlimited fine wines, spirits and other beverages; prepaid gratuities; unlimited Wi-Fi; and free valet laundry service.

On top of personalized service, guests sailing on Regent Seven Seas cruises will enjoy immersive exploration ashore – with overnights in some ports of call – and enrichment programs. Top-notch dining includes French cuisine at Chartreuse (on select ships), Pan-Asian fare at Pacific Rim (also on select ships) and Italian fare at Sette Mari at La Veranda.

More-Inclusive Cruises

Cruise fares with these lines include many of the amenities and perks that you'll find with the all-inclusive cruises. However, you'll still need to budget for some expenses, such as alcoholic beverages, excursions and specialty dining, depending on the line.

Covered main pool on a Viking ship

Courtesy of Viking Cruises

Viking's ocean fleet of nine 930-passenger all-veranda ships offers a nearly all-inclusive experience for guests. The upscale Scandinavian-inspired ships feature king-bed staterooms and suites with many amenities, including luxurious linens and plush robes, 24-hour room service, and free Wi-Fi – plus an in-room minibar with soft drinks, water and snacks. Higher-category staterooms on Viking Ocean Cruises come with additional perks like priority dinner and spa reservations, early stateroom access, and a welcome bottle of Champagne.

Cruise fares also include complimentary dining at all the venues; one free shore excursion in every port; beer, wine and soft drinks at lunch and dinner; specialty teas, coffee and bottled water; access to the spa; lectures and performances; port taxes and fees; and more.

Viking also has two 378-passenger Polar Class 6 expedition vessels, Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris. These ships also offer a mostly all-inclusive experience with the same amenities as their oceangoing vessels. Pricing on the expedition sailings includes Zodiac safaris, the use of kayaks, a keepsake Viking jacket, and essential gear for excursions and landings.

Select excursions, pre- or post-dinner cocktails, spa treatments, special bottles of wine, and other optional purchases come at an additional expense.

Private balcony with table and two chairs on an Azamara ship

Courtesy of Azamara

Azamara's four upscale boutique ships carry a maximum of 702 guests and offer immersive experiences around the world, calling on many smaller, lesser-known ports. The line also boasts more than 380 overnights and 850 late nights in port, so guests can have dinner in town and experience more of the destination's local culture and cuisine.

Azamara's cruise fares include all meals (other than the specialty dining restaurants) with water, tea and coffee. A selection of complimentary wine, sparkling wine, beer and spirits is available throughout the voyage. Cultural evenings ashore or on board the ship and gratuities are also included in the basic cruise fare.

If you'd like to enhance your onboard experience, Azamara offers inclusive "Experience More" packages that are discounted and based on the length of the voyage.

For example, on a seven-day or shorter sailing, solo travelers can add a package for $799 that's valued at $1,114 (a savings of 28%). This value-add bundle includes $350 of onboard credit to use for shore excursions; unlimited Wi-Fi for one device; a drinks package featuring premium wines, spirits and bottled water; a $150 spa credit; and a dinner at the Chef's Table or a total of three nights of specialty dining at Prime C or Aqualina. Three bags of laundry are also included.

Guests can book similar packages for double occupancy staterooms and longer voyages. You can also choose individual beverage, dining or internet packages if you don't need the extra amenities or features of the bundled options.

Virgin Voyages' four superyacht-inspired ships are designed with adults in mind and feature 1,330 cabins (most with balconies) and 78 RockStar Quarters suites, where guests have access to Richard's Rooftop, an exclusive outdoor deck space. Pricing with the adults-only cruise line includes stateroom or suite accommodations and meals at more than 20 eateries serving up international cuisine and dishes created by Michelin-starred chefs. Guests also have access to complimentary Wi-Fi; unlimited group exercise classes; nonalcoholic drinks such as water, tea and coffee; and plenty of lively entertainment.

Virgin does not offer beverage packages, but the line at times advertises special promotions that include voyage credits to cover expenses like airfare and drinks. Shore excursions and spa treatments – including skin care offerings on board Scarlet Lady in partnership with Jennifer Lopez, Virgin's chief entertainment and lifestyle officer – are some of the additional expenses not covered in the base fare.

Add-on Packages and All-Inclusive Fares

These five cruise lines offer basic cruise fares that cover accommodations and some amenities – and you can typically find special pricing and promotional deals throughout the year.

With the optional packages, guests can create a mostly all-inclusive voyage with bundles of add-on extras, such as shore excursions, beverage packages, specialty dining, Wi-Fi, gratuities or shipboard credit to cover miscellaneous personal expenses such as spa treatments or a bottle of wine for a special celebration.

Oceania Cruises

Oceania's eight small luxury ships carry between 648 and 1,238 guests. The line's newest ship – Vista , the first Allura Class vessel – debuted in Rome in May 2023. The beautifully appointed vessel features four new dining concepts, spacious standard staterooms at 290-plus square feet in size, new Concierge Level veranda accommodations for solo cruisers, an elevated mixology program and more.

Oceania's culinary program is touted by the line as "The Finest Cuisine at Sea" under the tutelage of Jacques Pépin, executive culinary director and master chef. Complimentary specialty dining is included in cruise fares on Oceania sailings. Pricing also covers airfare, still and sparkling water, specialty teas and coffees, soft drinks, and Wi-Fi on the ship.

Oceania's "OLife Choice" package provides additional value to your cruise with 2-for-1 cruise fares, free round-trip airfare and airport transfers – plus one free amenity you'll choose out of eight complimentary shore excursions, a beverage package or up to $800 in shipboard credit.

Celebrity offers special rates and packages throughout the year that save money over a la carte pricing – and elevate your onboard experience to be more inclusive. You'll be able to access the best deal on the added perks if you book the upgraded package before you sail, saving up to 40 to 50 percent of the actual cost.

The line's "All-Included" package bundles the most popular add-ons for cruisers: a standard beverage package for alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks, unlimited basic Wi-Fi, and gratuities for the staff and crew. Pricing depends on the stateroom or suite category and sailing.

There are other options when booking a cruise with Celebrity to create a more upscale and all-inclusive experience. Guests staying in all-suite The Retreat have exclusive access to a sundeck (on select ships), a lounge and Luminae – a private restaurant that features Global Culinary Ambassador Daniel Boulud at the helm. Guests of The Retreat booking the "All-Included" package receive a premium beverage package, premium unlimited Wi-Fi, gratuities and an onboard credit.

If you book AquaClass accommodations, you'll also have access to complimentary amenities and perks, such as unlimited access to the SEA Thermal Suite, discounts on spa treatment packages and complimentary fitness classes. In addition, you'll also find a bottle of sparkling wine upon arrival (by request) and two bottles of water refreshed daily in your room. AquaClass guests also have exclusive access to the restaurant Blu. You can add the "All-Included" package to your booking, which will include the Classic Drinks Package, basic Wi-Fi and gratuities.

Passengers who want to book this "All-Included" package and are sharing a stateroom or suite will need to book the same package.

"Free at Sea Plus" takes the package up a notch with a more comprehensive beverage selection, including top-shelf cocktails, Champagne by the glass, bottles of select premium wines at dinner and signature Starbucks coffee drinks. This option also includes unlimited Wi-Fi, additional nights of specialty dining and shore excursions.

The best adults-only, all-inclusive resorts in Europe

By Becky Lucas

Beach bar restaurant at Domes Noruz Kassandra Halkidiki

Adulting can be tough. With the freedom to do what you like comes responsibility, and with responsibility comes, well, having to clear the outrageous cocktail bill at the end of your break because you dared to forget about all those responsibilities, just for a while. Not so, on the kind of all-new, adult-only hotel experiences sweeping through Europe’s hotel scene right now. Not only do these carefully selected stays offer an all-inclusive package that allows you to pay up-front and indulge later (in drinks, snacks, meals and often activities), but they are little corners of adult escapism, only open to those mature enough to appreciate the particularly trailblazing Michelin-starred menu, the phenomenal frothy-fresh cocktails, the calming hues of the smooth-edged Scandi-influenced design, or simply the way the sun hits the sea at a certain time of day. Whatever you’re looking for from an adult-only all-inclusive hotel in Europe , there’s an option here to (gently) hit the spot.

Domes Noruz Kassandra Greece

Domes Noruz Kassandra, Greece

Best for : chic beach party vibes

Opened in April 2023, the Halkidiki member of the currently 14-strong Domes group that’s blossomed across Greece and Portugal was not the newest for long – Domes Novos Santorini arrived in April of this year, 91 Athens Riviera is set to launch in summer, and plans have been announced for another spot in Corfu Old Town soon (with Crete’s Domes Aulūs Elounda the most recent adult-only all-inclusive opening, back in summer 2022). There’s a reason the portfolio is flourishing so quickly: each maintains a certain pared-back, cool vibe yet also has its own character, bringing to its location whatever it was previously lacking. In this case, it’s a more grown-up ‘ beach club with rooms’ option on the increasingly nightlife-heavy Kassandra peninsula (nearby Chania has quieter tavernas, plus there are plenty of ancient sites nearby, should you want to replace any lost brain cells).

Its easy breezy look fuses inside with outside – light-coloured marble and classical Grecian design is set off by vibrant, carefully tended flowers; the stand-out infinity pool drops, like your shoulders, effortlessly into the Aegean’s horizon. The ‘Haute Living’ option includes a generous breakfast of local delicacies and excellent fresh fish and local wine at the hotel’s restaurant Topos. Be sure to make the most of the waves-facing open-air gym and Soma Spa to come home having both partied and been pampered. Read our full Domes Norus Kassandra review for more.

Address: Domes Norus Kassandra, Chaniotis, Chalkidki, Hanioti, Halkidiki, Greece, 63085

Price: From about £153 per night

Paradisus Salinas Lanzarote

Paradisus Salinas, Lanzarote

Best for: included local experiences

In a building itself deemed an artistic and cultural heritage site, designed by respected Spanish architect Fernando Higueras, Paradisus Salinas Lanzarote’s pools and tropical gardens were the vision of the late Cesar Manrique, the famed local artist, sculptor, nature activist and architectural visionary. As Caribbean brand Paradisus’ second opening in Europe (the first was on Gran Canaria), it offers its signature two Destination Inclusive passes as part of the all-inclusive the deal, which here can be used for a tasting at El Grifco winery or a walk through Manique’s maze of cleverly enhanced caves and volcanic walkways.

With direct access to the coastal path and nearby beautiful beaches at Costa Teguise, the hotel is ideal for evening walks, morning runs or bike rides, while its cross-fit style Corest Fitness gym offers passes for workouts throughout your stay. That’s not to mention the food, which includes fine, authentic Canarian cuisine at La Graciosa, or the holistic in-hotel spa. Should you want to elevate your stay, book The Reserve for top-tier accommodation and access across Meliá hotel’s restaurants, bars and pools.

Address: Paradisus Salinas Lanzarote, Av. de las Islas Canarias, s/n, 35508 Costa Teguise, Las Palmas, Spain

Price: From £303 per night

TRS Ibiza Hotel Ibiza

TRS Ibiza Hotel, Ibiza

Best for: satisfying Ibiza yearnings

A 378-suite mega hotel launched in May 2022, TRS Ibiza is bringing the upscale, adult-only, all-inclusive revolution to hardcore party spot San Antonio. Outdoor features include three pools, among them a rooftop infinity, swim-up rooms, Jacuzzi terraces and sundowner spot Gravity Sky Lounge, while elsewhere there’s a spacious spa and wellness centre with a hydrotherapy circuit, three restaurants and four more bars. Design is modern, airy and simple with just the right pops of colour in the tiles, lampshades or bedspreads; take note of the hotel’s own special fragrance in its public spaces. Opt for the Signature Level package for added perks such as the Dine Around scheme, which allows you to eat elsewhere on the island (plus VIP access to Hard Rock Hotel Ibiza’s ‘Children of the 80’s’ party, no less). Fancy somewhere in a quieter location? Boho Barcelo Portinax looks like a pretty stack of traditional bright white Grecian houses sitting in a cove practically in the sea, not far outside the peaceful village of San Juan.

Address: TRS Ibiza, Camí del Portixol, 1, 07820 Sant Antoni de Portmany, Illes Balears, Spain

Price: From £2,827 per person for a five-night stay on an all-inclusive basis in a Signature Level Deluxe room (that’s about £565.40 per night)

King Jason Zante Zakynthos

King Jason Zante, Zakynthos

Best for: water babes

The Cyprus and Greece-spanning brand Louis Hotels is set to add another to the fold this summer – the mighty sounding King Jason Zante (as mighty sounding as its existing brother hotels, King Jason Paphos and King Jason Protaras ). The latest address to spring up among Zakynthos’s increasingly smart mountains – its peers in proximity the likes of the Zen-like Olea Suites and exclusive Porto Zante Villas – it lands on the island at a time when it’s pivoting away from karaoke bars and free shots and towards boho-luxe, emphasis on the ‘-luxe’. This is a type of barefoot sophistication guided by a back-to-nature ethos, however; all farm-to-table dining, deep breathing and slow living. But King Jason Zante’s real highlight is its plethora of infinity pools facing out over the bay of Tsilivi, from the private ones allocated to specific overwater rooms, to the bigger ones for sharing – the hotel’s tagline invites you to ‘imagine sailing on land’. Look out for Cali Resort and Spa in Paphos, Cyprus, from the same group too, another adult-only spot with an all-inclusive option also opening this summer.

Address : Zakynthou, Planos 291 00, Greece

Price : From about £282 per room per night on an all-inclusive basis

Sensoria Dolomites Italy

Sensoria Dolomites, Italy

Best for: spa, wellness and fitness fans

Europe’s adult-only all-inclusives aren’t all of the fly and flake-out in the Med variety. At the bottom of the Alpe di Siusi, Europe’s largest high plateau, Sensoria Dolomites offers a gourmet package to travellers who love to ski, hike, horse-ride, golf, nourishing their bodies and souls in the spa, indoor and outdoor pools and Finnish sauna, or all of the above. Guests have access to the Dolomites ’ largest ski area and 80 kilometres of cross-country trails, can choose to start and end their days with a sound therapy session, throw in Wei Qi, yoga, Pilates and meditation, or alternatively trek through UNESCO World Heritage sites or sample local wine-tasting. All pick from the Indulgence Market at breakfast and the six-course Tyrolean and Mediterranean supper menu plus plenty of snacks. Boutique airline SkyAlps also launched a direct flight to nearby Bolzano this year, making the overall journey from London speedier.

Address : Sensoria Dolomites, The Oberhofer-Leitner Family, Via Sciliar 37, 39040 Siusi allo Sciliar, Italy

Price : From about £165 per night per person on a double occupancy basis including all-day inclusive package

Elissa AdultsOnly Lifestyle Beach Resort Rhodes

Elissa Adults-Only Lifestyle Beach Resort, Rhodes

Best for: diverse dining options

Starting this summer, guests can book into this part-traditional Rhodian design, part-modern style resort with the new ‘Ellevated Bliss’ package. This covers, along with food from the hotel’s four restaurants, 24-hour in-room dining, access to a Street Food Hub with dishes inspired by food trucks everywhere from Mexico to Italy, a fine wine and Champagne list including Veuve Clicquot and more than 300 Greek and international bottles, and the unique-sounding ‘Breakfast Stories’ – an à la carte bespoke menu from Michelin-starred chef Alexandros Tsiotinis, also the man behind its Kavos restaurant, with live musicians. Set beside Blue Flag-awarded Kallithea beach and close to the mediaeval UNESCO World Heritage Site of Rhodes city itself, accommodation choices include deluxe suites with verandas and water bungalows.

Address: Elissa Adults-Only Lifestyle Beach Resort, Kallithea, Rhodes, Greece 85100

Price: From £165 per night in summer 2024

Stella Island Resort Spa Crete

Stella Island Resort & Spa, Crete

Best for: all-out luxe

With its Maldives -style overwater villas, swim-up hotel rooms and villas with private pools, the 2017-opened Stella Island offers plenty of accommodation options to choose from – all of it magnificently splashy. At its heart is one of Europe’s biggest lagoon pools, where you can choose to have a ‘floating breakfast’ with staff delivering a spread to you as you bob in the pool or relax on your terrace. Its location in quiet Analipsi is a drive from the next nearest resort or village, but Stella Island’s five restaurants spanning modern Greek, sushi, seafood and ‘cocktail dining’ in the party garden, cutting-edge, Elemis-stocked spa and wellness centre with sauna and hammam, and experiences including cycling and private cruises, should keep you content.

Address: Stella Island Resort and Spa, Analipsi 700 14, Greece

Price: From £1,327 per person for seven nights (that’s about £190 per night)

Cruises from Southampton

Southamptom, england port information.

A cruise out of Southampton unlocks all kinds of incredible destinations, from French and Spanish wine country to Norway’s majestic fjords. But this charming port is also a great destination in and of itself. Spend some time getting to know it before your holiday – you won’t be disappointed. If you have a soft spot for mediaeval history, you’ll find plenty of interesting sites here. Like Bargate, a gatehouse that dates back over a thousand years to Norman times. Or visit St Michael's church on Castle Way – built in the 11th century, it’s home to ancient Norman artefacts and relics. Then, fast forward a few centuries at the Tudor house in St Michael’s Square, which served as the home of a wealthy merchant family in the 15th century. Today it’s a museum that showcases exhibits featuring nearly a thousand years of local history.

When is the best time to book a cruise from Southampton?

When it comes to when to book, you may be wondering: does the early bird really get the worm, or are there perks to procrastinating? Planning ahead is a great way to nab big savings, as Royal Caribbean® often runs early saver deals to guests booking well in advance. Also, the closer you get to your preferred sail date, availability goes down, usually driving prices up. The net-net: booking ahead is a surefire way to lock in a great cruise deal, while waiting entails some risk. That said, booking a cruise at the last minute can also yield unexpected savings — but only if the itinerary you’re interested in isn’t sold out yet!

Top Europe FAQs

Where can I cruise to in Europe?

A Celebrity European cruise vacation takes you to some of the most exciting cities in the world, from Iceland and the Fjords in Northern Europe to the Mediterranean,  the Canary Islands and the stunning Greek Isles. You’ll set sail on spectacular new adventures on any European cruise with Celebrity.

We depart from eight incredible ports in Europe including Amsterdam, Barcelona, Venice, and Rome just to name a few. There are plenty of ways to embrace the best of everything in the region. View our European itineraries for more details.

When’s the best time to cruise?

We offer a wide variety of Europe itineraries with our newest Edge-class ships sailing during the summer and Celebrity Infinity year round. Each region of Europe offers different experiences guests can enjoy.

Enjoy the quintessential Mediterranean summer with spectacular beaches, warm weather, and delicious food, or sail through the Norwegian fjords between May and August, when they are at their most beautiful. Visit unique destinations like the Holy Land in the cooler months, from February to April.

How long are European cruises?

From 4-night getaways to 14-night sailings, we have options for everyone in Europe year round. Get away for a weekend to Belgium and the Netherlands or set off on a week-long adventure to the Mediterranean, Norwegian Fjords or the exquisite paradise of the Canary Islands.

What should I pack?

What to pack for a cruise to Europe depends on where you’re headed, and when. For the Mediterranean in summer, you’ll need beachwear, a sun hat, and light clothes for a hot climate. The British Isles, on the other hand, is often cool and damp, even in the height of summer, so you should pack a light waterproof jacket. The same applies to Iceland, Ireland, and Scandinavia. You could be basking in hot sunshine, but there are no guarantees.

If you’re traveling as the seasons change, in April and May, or between September and November, you’ll need to pack for all eventualities. Remember to include comfortable shoes for walking around ruins and through old castles, and something to cover your shoulders if you want to go inside churches and mosques.

Throughout the ship, casual resort wear, sundresses, shorts, polos, or button-downs are appropriate, paired with sandals, low heels, and loafers. In main and specialty dining, we ask guests to refrain from wearing swimsuits, see-through cover ups or robes, bare feet, tank tops, T-shirts, and baseball caps.

Smart Casual attire is required for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the Celebrity Theatre. Smart Casual means you look comfortable yet tasteful in a dress, skirt, long pants, or jeans with a stylish top or button-down. Shorts and flip flops are not considered Smart Casual.

Each itinerary features one to two “formal” nights that we call Evening Chic. Evening Chic means you dress to impress, glamorous and sophisticated in your own way, with a cocktail dress, skirt, slacks, or designer jeans, an elegant dress top, or blazer—some guests even pack a tuxedo or gown for onboard photos.

The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening. If you do not wish to participate in Evening Chic, Smart Casual attire is acceptable for dining and attending the theater.

What can I see while I’m there?

Yes, you can request seat assignments in instances where the airline makes them available to Celebrity Cruises®. Most air carriers charge a fee for early seat assignment requests and when this occurs you will be directed to contact the airline directly to confirm your seating.

Europe has a rich, diverse mix of cultures and countries that you can immerse yourself in. See medieval towns like Tallinn, Estonia, or chic Scandinavian capitals such as Stockholm and Copenhagen.

In the Mediterranean, visit Rome, Barcelona, Athens, Florence, and Pisa for a culture and history fix. You will see astonishing natural beauty, too, from geysers and volcanoes in Iceland to the rolling green hills of Ireland, and the majestic scenery of the Norwegian fjords.

Pick an itinerary that matches your interests and pace yourself; some places are best explored with a guide, while in others, it can be fun to just sit and people-watch with a glass of local wine or a cold beer.

Should I book tours ahead of time?

If you are traveling in peak season, we recommend you book your Shore Excursions through My Celebrity Cruises as soon as you confirm your sailing as many attractions in Europe are extremely popular.

Booking a shore excursion with Celebrity also means you’ll be visiting attractions with a professional guide, and on a tour that guarantees to return you to the ship on time.

Whether you're looking for a private, customizable experience, a carefully curated guided tour with a small group, or an unforgettable trip to iconic local landmarks, we have the right option to discover any destination, granting in-depth knowledge, expertise, and a truly extraordinary experience.

Can I get around with English?

Many languages are spoken in Europe, from French, German, Italian, and Spanish to Estonian, Swedish, and Danish. Most people working in the hospitality industry speak at least some English.

Is a European cruise good for families?

A cruise to Europe is a great family vacation option as kids will be exposed to multiple cultures, not to mention millennia of history and different cuisines. You’ll find attractions that are great fun for the whole family, from the pretty Tivoli Gardens amusement park in Copenhagen to the ABBA Museum in Stockholm.

Kids will love exploring castles in Scotland and Ireland, basking in the Blue Lagoon in Iceland, or spotting whales on a boat tour. The Norwegian fjords are packed with outdoor activities such as RIB rides, hikes, and kayaking, while a trip to the Mediterranean is a fantastic way to make ancient history come to life for kids in locations like the Colosseum in Rome, or the Parthenon in Athens.

Do I need a visa to cruise to Europe?

It is the responsibility of each guest to identify and obtain all required travel documents and have them available at the pier when necessary. Before leaving home, take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the required travel documents you will be asked to provide prior to boarding the ship. You’ll find more information here .

The vast majority of countries visited by European cruises do not require a visa. From 2024, Americans, Canadians, and British citizens will be required to register for the new European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) to enter 30 European countries.

This will be easy to apply for, inexpensive, and is simply a pre-authorization system similar to the ESTA that Europeans need to travel to the U.S. and Canada. Once you have the ETIAS, it will be valid for three years. You should make sure you have at least six months before your passport expires, too.

What type of currency will I need?

Most, but not all countries in Europe use the Euro as their official currency. All the places you will visit on your European cruise will have ATMs, and credit cards are widely accepted. Carry cash for things like taxi fares or purchases in markets. Some countries don’t use the Euro; in Britain, for example, the currency is the pound, while Sweden and Turkey both have their own currencies.

Before You Go

  • To make it easier to replace your passport if it’s lost or stolen, in addition to your passport, take a photocopy of your passport information page (keeping it separate from your actual passport).
  • Carry only a limited amount of cash, just enough for gratuities and incidental purchases. Major credit cards are widely accepted and can be replaced if lost or stolen.

All-inclusive resort or cruise – which is best?

“Club Tropicana, drinks are free… Fun and sunshine, there’s enough for everyone,” so sang George Michael in Wham!’s famous 1980s paean to the nascent all-inclusive. In the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, ‘free’ booze and no bill sounded and looked – if you were anywhere near a pool in Ibiza with George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley – like holiday utopia.

Drinks weren’t really free, but the idea that you could pay up-front to eat and imbibe, and be assured that you wouldn’t be presented with a terrifying bill at the end, was a novel concept, particularly for budget-conscious families and sun-seeking partygoers.

It still offers considerable appeal in our cash-strapped times, which may explain why all-inclusives have had something of a renaissance. Cruising offers similar peace of mind and plenty to do with kids clubs, waterslides and Disney princesses on board – though alcohol isn’t always free. During both types of holiday, the entertainment comes to you and you’ll never have to flinch at the prices on the menu.

But which type of holiday is best? Our writer put them both to the test.

All-inclusive

Club Med founders Gilbert Trigano and Gérard Blitz, who dreamt up the all-inclusive concept in the 1950s, had beaches and sunshine in mind. But skiers also favoured the all-in pricing model. Europe’s slopes were a win-win for the brand, which opened its first Alpine village at Leysin in Switzerland in 1956 ( clubmed.co.uk ).

Traditional sunshine strongholds Mexico and the Caribbean – where Butch Stewart picked up the mantel with his Sandals brand – still account for a big slice of the all-inclusive pie, but the net has spread further to include Cuba, Egypt, Turkey, Greece, Cyprus, Croatia, Montenegro, Cape Verde and the Azores. Further afield there are all-inclusive resorts in Kenya, Thailand (mostly Phuket) and the Maldives and Mauritius. Turkish-owned Rixos ( rixos.com ) has recently opened resorts in Qatar and Doha, while Tui ( tui.co.uk ) and First Choice ( firstchoice.co.uk ) offer several resorts in Costa Rica.

Cruise

An average week or 10-day ocean cruise can tick-off several different destinations in one country, or across several countries in one trip. If you have a bit longer, it can take you round the world. Three-month world cruise itineraries cross continents, sail several seas and oceans, visit scores of capital cities and offer hundreds of excursion opportunities.

And let’s not forget off-grid but accessible by water destinations such as the Galapagos, the Pitcairn Islands and Antarctica. River cruises follow the course of most navigable rivers, from the Amazon to the Zambezi. The Mekong, the Mississippi and the Ganges are among their more adventurous destinations.

Whether beach or mountain-based, most all-inclusive resorts feature an activities element. Sandals comes up trumps, with free scuba at its Caribbean dive resorts and multiple rounds of golf and green fees at top courses in Jamaica, St Lucia and the Bahamas.

Meanwhile, guests at Rixos resorts in Turkey have free daily access to The Land of the Legends Theme Park in Antalya – which means big savings in peak periods. This Easter, there are also egg hunts as well as giant egg-painting: a week at Premium Tekirova costs from £2,390 for four adults and two children, departing on March 30.

Watersports not your bag? Ikos Oceania in Halkidiki can provide a Tesla Model 3 at no extra cost for one day’s exploration as well as a culture pass to local museums. At Ikos resorts ( ikosresorts.com ), spa access is free between 8am to 8pm.

If you’re after more than a typical beach holiday, check the activities part of a hotel website to find out what’s included. The adults-only Sanctuary Cap Cana ( sanctuarycapcana.com ) in the Dominican Republic offers Spanish classes and, at the House of Aia on Mexico’s Riviera Maya ( thehouseofaia.com ), a ‘personal growth’ programme includes 20 classes, ceremonies and rituals from visiting guides.

If you have adventurous teens in tow, the US offers some interesting options. At the historic Castle Hot Springs in Arizona ( castlehotsprings.com ) there’s axe-throwing, cruiser bikes, geothermal hot springs and creekside hammocks for lazing in, while, further north in scenic Wyoming, Scott Dunn has stays at Brush Creek Ranch, set in 30,000 acres of sage-bush prairie where you can ride, fish or take to the landscape by ATV ( scottdunn.com ).

With distractions ranging from rock-climbing walls and ropes courses to simulated surfing, via encounters with Star Wars, Marvel and Disney Pixar characters, cruising sets a high bar for activities. And on land, there are excursions – sometimes included – for every type of passenger.

It’s not just families who benefit. Swan Hellenic ( swanhellenic.com ) has teamed up with Deepak Chopra to offer wellbeing voyages, while adult-only ships offer films under the stars or in theatres, lectures from wildlife experts and historians, opportunities for citizen science, celebrity speakers, casinos and activities ranging from dance lessons to art and photography classes. Virgin ( virginvoyages.com ) also puts on DJ sets and pool and dance parties. And let’s not forget the main event – a new place to explore every day.

Newer resorts have really lifted the bar. At its properties along Turkey’s Turquoise Coast, Rixos rolls out the red carpet for families with a Rixy Kids Club that has cooking and pottery lessons as well as football and dance academies. At Rixos Sungate, where the kids’ club is set around a splash park in a forest, children can learn to code using Lego robotics.

At Ikos Resorts’ collection of luxury properties in Spain and Greece, kids’ clubs are run in line with UK Ofsted standards. Meanwhile, Tui’s family-friendly resorts come with kids’ clubs and a seven-day line-up of activities including creative sessions. Mini Club Med offers trapeze lessons, introductory water-skiing, horse-riding, cooking classes, games and nature discovery activities. For older kids (11-17), there’s film design, DJ sessions and dedicated areas in which to hang out.

If you’re travelling with very small children or have ambitious activities in mind, check the small print: like lots of childcare for babies and toddlers, Petit Club Med and Baby Club Med both cost extra. Motorised water sports often incur a fee at all-inclusives while some resorts impose limits on the number of windsurfing or other tutored lessons.

Cruise ships do a stellar job when it comes to children’s clubs, with all ages well catered for. Most resort ships divide clubs into four age groups and some, including P&O Cruises ( pocruises.com ), offer free babysitting. Royal Caribbean ( royalcaribbean.com ) has an adventure science lab for budding junior scientists as well as baby and tots programmes for those aged six to 36 months. Celebrity Cruises has a STEM at Sea partnership with The Frost Science Museum (Equinox and Edge-class ships; celebritycruises.com ).

P&O Cruises is particularly well set up for those with kids in tow, with round-the-clock children’s clubs on its family-friendly ships and family-oriented shore excursions. MSC Cruises ( msccruises.co.uk ) has baby, mini, junior, young and teen clubs. The latter offers Xbox and PS4 tournaments, a Drone Academy, flash mobs and dance offs. Disney Dream ( disneycruise.disney.go.com ) has some imaginative offerings too, including the Jedi Training Academy and the opportunity to hang out with characters from the Toy Story trilogy.

You get what you pay for. If that’s sun and sea and a good four-star family resort, expect two or three bars and a standard buffet: a week at the Iberostar Bellevue in Montenegro costs £1,562 in mid-May ( iberostar.com ). Pay a bit more and you’ll be rewarded with more imaginative menus. At Ikos Porto Petro in Majorca, five à la carte restaurants serve meals inspired by Michelin-starred chefs (from £2,470pp with Sovereign; sovereign.com ).

Ikos also has curated “dine out” programmes that encourage guests to eat at local restaurants – including a rustic tapas joint in Estepona, an agriturismo in Ibiza and a buzzy beachfront spot in Marbella. Sandals ( sandals.co.uk ) has similar in Curaçao and Nassau. Caribbean all-inclusives generally offer three or four restaurants – and maybe a pop-up beach venue or barbecue night.

Think cruise, think buffet, right? Wrong. Standards are high, with new ships offering a plethora of cuisines, dining styles and venues along with healthy options and dietary alternatives. You’re as likely to find vegan muffins and bee-pollen at the breakfast buffet as a Full English.

Silversea and Virgin have ditched the buffet altogether. Partnerships with chefs including Marco Pierre White and Eric Lanlard (P&O Cruises), Relais & Chateau (Silversea; silversea.com ), Jacques Pepin (Holland America Line; hollandamerica.com ) and Thomas Keller (Seabourn; seabourn.com ) have also made a difference. Crystal ( crystalcruises.com ) has a Japanese restaurant masterminded by Nobu while wine presenter Olly Smith helms the Glasshouse on some P&O ships.

Silversea, Holland America Line and Oceania ( oceaniacruises.com ) are highly regarded among foodies and Regent Seven Seas ( rssc.com ) offers some stylish settings while Celebrity’s newer ships have roof-top gardens and over-the-sea dining. Fine dining can cost extra, depending on the ship, but expect to pay around £15 on top for three courses, which might just include one of the finest steaks you’ll ever eat.

All-inclusive

It’s a broad-brush summation but for something established, refined and ‘old-school’ romantic – think castaway beaches, palm fronds gently buffeted by warm trade winds, knock-out views and honeymoon havens – the Caribbean is a safe bet. The likes of Jumby Bay ( oetkercollection.com ), Spice Island Resort ( spiceislandbeachresort.com ), Necker ( virginlimitededition.com ) and Curtain Bluff ( curtainbluff.com ) are famous for a reason.

The Maldives attracts a discerning international clientele while, in Europe, there are affordable package resorts where screaming kids are well tolerated. At the stylish new kids on the block (think Ikos and Grecotel Luxme; grecotel.com ), Poppy and Miles only scream in the privacy of the rooms however.

Skiers are too busy skiing, too knackered or too busy partying to care about trifles like the vibe. If in doubt opt for Club Med, where most people speak French.

It varies enormously across ships. River ships are tranquil, geared to sightseeing and generally follow an up-early and early-to-bed routine. Large resort ships can feel like theme parks, with entertainment into the wee hours; smaller ships go out of their way to leave passengers alone and provide impressive libraries and spaces for quiet contemplation. Viking ( vikingcruises.co.uk ), Silversea and Seabourn excel at this. Then there are the tall ships such as Sea Cloud ( seacloud.com ) and those in the Star Clipper fleet ( starclippercruises.co.uk ), where you’ll spend most of your time on deck watching the wind make the sails dance.

Some liners take a ship-within-a-ship approach, with exclusive areas, pools and services – at a cost. MSC has the Yacht Club while Norwegian Cruise Line ( ncl.com ), Royal Caribbean and P&O have premium areas with pools and separate menus. Cunard ( cunard.com ) has the Grills Suites.

If you’re after a more intimate, house-party atmosphere (complete with Surrey types, ex-boat owners and ‘non-cruisers’), opt for a yacht-style cruise ship from Ponant ( uk.ponant.com ), SeaDream ( seadream.com ), Scenic Eclipse ( scenic.co.uk ) or one of a handful of Windstar ships ( windstarcruises.com ).

Hidden costs All-inclusive

Do question the headline price, especially if booking via a third party. In January 2024, a Which? survey of 2,000 holidaymakers revealed key omissions from some operators, including soft drinks. Those who booked with the cheapest provider, lastminute.com , were forking out an extra £367 per week on average for extras.

Operators take different approaches to inclusions. BA Holidays says: “Expect your holiday to include flights and accommodation, all three meals and snacks in between. Drinks are included too but expect house wine and local spirits unless otherwise stated.” EasyJet’s small print states: “What’s included in the all-inclusive package varies vastly between hotels. When booking your holiday be sure to look at the board description.”

Premium restaurants often cost more, but at the Oaks IBN Battuta in Dubai for example (where a week costs from £989pp through loveholidays.com ) the price includes à la carte restaurants and in-room breakfast. In all cases the two-clicks-away small print was clear. Read it. If in doubt, use the chat function, talk to a travel agent or pick up the phone.

All cruises include accommodation, dining, entertainment and access to pools and the other fun facilities, but Wi-Fi, drinks – alcohol and soda – and tips and room service might not be included. Tips are automatically added to cruise bills on a per passenger, per day basis. Expect to pay for service on spa and beauty treatments and bar drinks.

If you plan on drinking every day, pay for a drinks package (there are alcohol-free packages, too). Celebrity Cruises alcoholic drinks packages start at around £55 per day and Cunard’s soft drinks package starts from around £8.50 per day. Princess Cruises’ Wi-Fi, tips and drinks bundle costs £50pp per day ( princess.com ).

Though you’ll still pay extra to tip for beauty services, some truly all-inclusive lines also include Wi-Fi, limitless premium drinks, a free mini-bar, most service fees and some excursions. Some also include airfares and a pre- or post-cruise hotel night. Take a look at Regent Seven Seas, Silversea, Viking, Crystal and Seabourn.

Which wins?

The all-inclusive concept has evolved – there’s no room for holiday snobbery in 2024. If all you want is a hassle-free place to relax by a pool or on the beach and forget about daily expenses, this is as good as it gets. But if you intend to stay longer than a week or haven’t been to the destination before, do some research. You may tire of the same sand, sun loungers and restaurants while venturing out to drink and dine makes little financial sense.

If you’ve a thirst for new places, a cruise offers all of the above plus the bonus of a new port of call most days – without the need to unpack. You’ll never get bored of the changing views and, as for feeling claustrophobic, you can disembark every day (though you don’t have to). Plenty of ships overnight in port, so you can dine ashore too.

Cruises score bonus points for once-in-a-lifetime experiences too. Unless you own a boat, how else do you experience the romance of a dawn arrival in Manhattan, a sunset sail out of Sydney or your first glimpse of porpoising penguins in the Galapagos?

Couple sell up to live on an ‘endless’ cruise that’s cheaper than buying a new home

villa vie residences Villa Vie Odyssey Couple sell up to go on 'endless' all-inclusive cruise that's cheaper than buying a new home

What if you could save money and spend your days basking under the sunshine as you travel around the world? You’d jump at the chance, right?

That’s exactly the opportunity that presented itself to Grace and Jerry Grady, who are among the roughly 800 passengers on the Villa Vie Odyssey, one of just two residential cruise liners in operation once it sets sail from Belfast today.

The couple in their 70s sold ‘everything’ to live aboard the ship, which will visit 425 ports in 147 countries and all seven continents over the next three-and-a-half years.

But although it’s the kind of trip that seems reserved for your wildest fantasies, it’s surprisingly affordable.

Jerry and Grace, who previously lived in the US, paid an annual rental fee of €40,038 (£34,064) each for their cabin, with prices on the Villa Via Odyssey ranging from just under €30,000 (£25,524) for an indoor cabin to around €67,000 (£57,003) a year for one with a balcony.

Alongside their room, this covers unlimited food and soft drinks for guests, alcoholic beverages at dinner, free WiFi and medical checks (excluding medicines and procedures), 24/7 room service, weekly housekeeping and a bi-weekly laundry service.

It may seem like a lot to stump up in one go, but when you consider the estimated cost of living in London which sits at £4,245 a month (£50,940 a year) for a single person, it doesn’t seem too bad at all.

It is also possible to buy a cabin outright instead of renting, with prices starting at €91,270 (£77,652) for an inside cabin. If you choose this option, you’ll also have to pay a monthly fees of €1,613 (£1,372) – rising to €3,680 (£3,131) if you go for a balcony cabin – per person to cover your board.

Meanwhile, a mere deposit on a house in the UK comes in at £53,414 on average, and in the capital this figure skyrockets to an eye-watering £108,848. Given that’s before you’ve factored in mortgage repayments, bills, and everyday expenses like food and transport, it’s understandable some people would rather give cruise living a go.

These schemes are growing in popularity, but the only residential ship that has currently hit the seas is The World, where prices are far higher than on the Villa Vie Odyssey and range from €1.84 million (£1.57 million) to €13.8 million (£11.7 million) annually.

cruise all inclusive europe

As for the Gradys, they put their home on the market to fund their voyage, and have been living off the bare minimum out of a rental property in Silicy while they wait to set off.

‘In the end, we sold most of our belongings to friends,’ Grace explained to Euronews . ‘I’ve been wearing the same clothes everyday and washing them by hand each night.’

The pair initially booked to join the three-year Life at Sea Cruises trip which was cancelled in November 2023 , so it’s been a long time coming.

‘It has always been a dream of mine to see the world,’ said Jerry. ‘I want to get this thing going. We are vagabonds, we’ve travelled a lot. I’m not worried about anything.’

Like all guests on the Villa Vie Odyssey, they can choose to go back to dry land with at least six months notice, as the itinerary is split into 16 segments of between 35 and 120 days and works on a pay-as-you go basis.

Jerry and Grace do plan on staying for the full three-and-a-half years, though, and may continue to do so afterwards if they get their sea legs. That’s because operator Villa Vie Residences bills its offering as an ‘endless’ cruise, starting all over again once this trip finishes in November 2027.

The ship will be replaced every 15 years, but passengers can effectively become full-time cruisers for the rest of their lives.

cruise all inclusive europe

This time around, the journey will kick off with a tour of Northern Europe, before heading on to the Caribbean, North and South America, East Asia, the Pacific, the Middle East, Africa and back round to Europe again.

The itinerary of the cruise has even been meticulously timed so that it stays nice and sunny throughout the entirety of the voyage.

Inside, the Villa Vie Odyssey – which was built in 1993 but has spent the last eight weeks undergoing a swanky makeover – features eight decks with three restaurants, five bars and lounges, and a wraparound promenade where you can watch the world go by.

There’s also a pool with two Jacuzzis, a spa and fitness centre, an entertainment schedule, pickleball court, an ‘interactive culinary centre’ and a library. But if that’s not enough to keep you busy, hopefully visiting 13 out of the 14 Wonders of the World will do the trick.
