HARBOUR ROCKS SYDNEY MGALLERY

harbour rocks sydney exterior cruise port hotels

It’s got character to spare

Trish Hawksworth- C.:” Harbour Rocks hotel is very close to the cruise terminal, it’s slightly uphill if you are staying after a cruise, but an easy walk with cases if you’re starting a cruise. We have used this lovely boutique hotel and will stay there before our cruise next March.”

Linda G.:”  I stayed at Harbor Rocks Hotel which was a very short walk to where my Celebrity ship was docked. It took us a couple of minutes to walk to port from the hotel or would be no more than a 2-minute cab ride. Rooms are small but nice. A boutique hotel, part of the MGallery Collection. Located in the convenient and historic Rocks area.”

The Harbour Rocks Sydney MGallery is the perfect Sydney accommodation choice, a popular home for many travellers. Harbour Rocks Hotel offers a fascinating glimpse into Sydney’s past and is a unique base from which to explore the city. All 59 rooms are well-appointed with modern amenities whilst preserving the historic charm of the building. The city’s harbour, Opera House and famous Rocks precinct are ideally located on your doorstep.

With its excellent location within The Rocks, Harbour Rocks Sydney MGallery has many of Sydney’s best attractions on its doorstep. Guests staying at this beautiful Sydney hotel are within walking distance of Sydney Opera House, Sydney Harbour Bridge e and the Royal Botanic Gardens. Other attractions in the area include The Rocks Markets, Museum of Contemporary Art, Dawes Point Park and The Rocks Discovery Museum. Trains, buses and ferries allow guests to explore the rest of Sydney and its surrounds.

The beautiful historic hotel has captured some of the earliest stories of Sydney’s past. The hotel does not have lifts and has four levels with short flights of stairs between each. There is a luggage lift and our porter is always willing to assist.

For a location, you could certainly do a lot worse: The Rocks is the corner of town with a front-row view of both the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the famous opera house. Then again, what’s inside the Harbour Rocks Hotel isn’t exactly hard on the eyes, either. The building is nearly a century and a half old, originally a warehouse, and the latest renovation is a master class on how to make the most of a splendid old building: the weathered brick walls, painted an expansive white in the public spaces and an arresting black in the bedrooms, are the envy of any “loft-style” boutique hotel.

It’s got character to spare, that much is clear. So it might be a bit of a surprise to learn that it’s an MGallery hotel, and thus part of the Accor family tree. Clearly, the corporate office hasn’t interfered with the aesthetics of the place. Like all the best city hotels, the Harbour Rocks interacts with the city around it. The leafy terrace is a hidden Sydney gem, and both the Scarlett restaurant and Eric’s Bar attract locals as well as hotel guests. And with a memorable location as well as the polished, professional service the big chains excel at, the Harbour Rocks has all the makings of a truly unique experience — and that, it turns out, is what matters the most.

OVOLO WOOLLOOMOOLOO

Welcome to wonder.

Ovolo Hotel Woolloomooloo offers a unique stay, close to the heart of Sydney CBD but yet in a peaceful wharf location. Offering 5-star boutique accommodation options that include beautifully-designed private rooms and outstanding loft suites.  The rooms are incredibly spacious, with beds that will make you forget about home! They have amazing facilities which include an Indoor pool, restaurant, bar & a fitness center.

Bridging between heritage and modern luxury, indulge in the rich history of the Woolloomooloo wharf complemented by contemporary designs and tech-savvy inclusions. All in the comfort of your generously sized abode over picturesque Sydney Harbour.

Located near Sydney Royal Botanic Gardens, you will be in the perfect location to explore beautiful parklands and the Sydney Opera House as well as The Rocks. We truly are the perfect luxury boutique hotel for your next trip to Sydney

It’s impossible to resist Ovolo Woolloomooloo’s location, an old finger wharf extending out over the water, still surrounded by docked vessels and affording prime views of the marina, the city, and the landmarks on the Harbour.

As is typical in industrial retrofits, some of the wharf’s structure and machinery is left exposed for effect, and rooms are loft-style, many split-levels, with vast and sumptuous king beds perched above living areas. The décor is maximalist, in this case avoiding the clichéd sunny Down Under palette in favor of chocolate faux-suede — an odd choice, and a memorable one. Colonial windows, Edison bulbs, and articulated lamps collectively signify a thoroughly contemporary design perspective, though it’s probably the in-room Apple TV unit, Smart TV, and iPad that prove once and for all that we’ve moved on from the Aughts. Or, you know, the incredible variety of complimentary: speedy wi-fi, stocked minibar — hell, there’s even a 24-hour indoor pool and gym on-site.

As with all Ovolo hotels, Lo Lounge offers an all-day and all-night retreat for every social need: coffee, a quick snack, shareable bites, and the hard stuff all flow freely. Then there’s the wharf at large, which houses a luxury apartment and entertainment complex as well as the hotel; you don’t have to set foot on dry land if you don’t want to, and certainly not to mingle, as the locals visit just for the bar. Then again, come morning, you’re so close to the shopping districts and the city’s landmarks that it would be a shame to miss them — take a walk to the Opera House and find not just an arresting Modernist structure but, inside, one of Sydney’s top restaurants as well.

Explore Sydney from our Circular Quay hotel

Stacy B.;  “Marriott at Circular Quay I recommend. Get an Opera house view room. There is a building in front of the hotel so you can’t get a room with a view of both the Opera house and the bridge. I don’t find the bridge is that interesting. On the weekend, The Rocks nearby has a great open-air market. The ferries come in at Circular Quay a block away. On Sundays, all public transportation is discounted. The ships dock nearby – if you need a cab when you disembark in Sydney, take the lift up to the 2nd floor of the terminal.”

Located in the bustling heart of the city, Sydney Harbour Marriott Hotel at Circular Quay welcomes guests with superb service, luxury amenities, and an ideal location.

Guests are near Circular Quay’s dining, fashion, and entertainment hot spots, as well as Australia’s top attractions, including Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Opera House, The Rocks, and Hyde Park. Work out in the fitness center or take a dip in the indoor pool. Savor the fine-dining restaurant headed by a Michelin-trained chef or stop by an award-winning laneway bar and historic gastropub.

Recharge in spacious, modern rooms with plush bedding, mini-fridges, 24-hour room service, work desks with ergonomic chairs, and free Wi-Fi. Bi-level loft suites are ideal for entertainers while their upper-level rooms and suites boast scenic views of the Opera House and Harbour.

Sydney cruise port

Region Australia - New Zealand - Pacific Ocean Islands

Local Time 2024-06-08 14:45

Port Sydney cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Sydney, NSW Australia. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Sydney Cruise Port is the busiest Australian homeport and ship travel destination. Sydney Harbour itself is a scenic destination with a lot of boat tours. The city's best-known attractions are the futuristic-designed Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The 1932-opened arch bridge carries all the traffic (rail, vehicles, bicycles, pedestrian) between the CBD (city's central business district) and North Shore's suburbs.

The cruise industry is Australia's fastest-growing economic sector with worth ~AUD 5 billion to the NSW alone. It supports over 20,000 local jobs. ISeason 2015-2016 statistics showed 325 cruise ship visits to NSW.

Port Sydney NSW

All Sydney's seaport facilities are managed by Sydney Ports Corporation - an NSW Government-owned company also responsible for the seaport's development and facilities within Sydney Metro. Two more (smaller) ports are in Eden and Yamba.

In April 2013, the NSW Government announced granted a 99-year lease (until 2112) to the NSW Ports Consortium for AUD 4,31 billion. The lease was granted together with a lease for Port Kembla for AUD 760 million. Of the sale proceeds, over AUD 2 billion were allocated for road infrastructure projects.

Under Sydney Ports Corporation management are the following ports:

  • Port Jackson (Sydney Harbour) with 11 berths serving dry and liquid bulk carriers, general cargo ships, cruise terminal (Overseas Passenger Terminal at Circular Quay).
  • Port Botany (Botany Bay, approx 13 km / 8 mi south of city's central business district) has a terminal for liquid bulk carriers, a storage facility and 2 container terminals.
  • Port Enfield (Logistics Centre) has a freight railway connecting it with Port Botany.
  • Port St Peters houses the Cooks River Rail Depot and a Container Park.
  • Since 2011, Sydney Ports Corporation also manages Port Eden and Port Yamba.

On April 9, 2018, the new China-built gantry crane (by ZPMC / "Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries") was delivered at Sydney Container Terminal. Same ZPMC cranes (serving large container ships ) were also delivered and installed in Brisbane (one, in April) and Melbourne (two, in March).

  • The equipment (a total of 9 gantry cranes) was ordered by DP World Australia (Australia's main and largest container port and supply chain operator) to serve the country's container terminals. By this USD 180 million project were also delivered 20x straddle trucks, 4x RTGs (rubber-tyred gantry cranes), 38x forklifts (industrial trucks).
  • Each of the 9x ZPMC cranes costs USD 14 million, has rated capacity 65 tons (under spreader) and 75 tons (under heavy lift beam), rail gauge 25,3 m, above rail hoist height 38 m, hoist speed 90 m per min (loaded) and 180 m / min (unloaded).

Sydney NSW cruise port

The port's cruise schedule has ships operating on Cruises to Nowhere , roundtrip itineraries to ports in Queensland, Tasmania, New Zealand and South Pacific Islands (New Caledonia, Fiji, Vanuatu). Longer (repositioning) cruises go to ports in Asia (some all the way to China and Japan) and North America (via Honolulu Hawaii ).

On November 27, 2015, in Sydney Harbour met two of the largest Australia-homeported cruise ships - RCI Royal Caribbean 's vessels Explorer of the Seas and Voyager of the Seas , carrying over 10,000 passengers and crew. The Explorer was finishing a 16-night Australia and New Zealand itinerary from Fremantle-Perth , while the Voyager started a 7-night itinerary to Melbourne . Both ships are from RCI's Voyager-class series, with gross tonnage 138,194 tons and LOA length 311 m (1020 ft), For season 2015-2016, RCI had all 4 ships - plus the couple Radiance of the Seas (homeport Sydney) and Legend of the Seas (homeport Brisbane, currently operates as Marella Discovery 2 for Marella UK) . With this fleet, Royal Caribbean made a total investment of over USD 280 million in the Australian market.

In 2017, RCI extended the second season (2017-2018) of the ever largest Australia-homeported ship - Ovation of the Seas - by additional 6 cruises or 5 weeks homeporting in Sydney. Ovation was scheduled to make a total of 9 itineraries during the liner's 2nd Sydney-based season (departures November 2017 through February 2018). The newly added roundtrips in 2018 were: 8-night "South Pacific" (departure February 18), 10-night to New Zealand (departures February 26, March 13), 5-night to Tasmania (departure March 8), 3-night sampler Cruise to Nowhere (departure March 23) and the 14-night repositioning cruise to Singapore (departure March 26). The mega liner arrived for the first time in Sydney on December 15, 2016. and was scheduled to leave the homeport on January 23, 2017 and return to China. However, as the large cruise ship had exceeded all the Royal Caribbean Australia's expectations, they decided to add the 4 extra itineraries to meet the market's demand.

For season 2017-2018, Australia's fastest-growing tourism sector suffered a blow with major consequences for NSW's economy as cruise shipping companies started to bypass Port Sydney in favour of Melbourne , Brisbane , Auckland New Zealand and even further (homeporting in Asia instead). The decision for ship re-deploynment was due to Sydney Harbour's Overseas Passenger Terminal incapacity to berth larger vessels.

For season 2017-2018, Australia's 2nd biggest cruise shipping company Royal Caribbean redeployed Voyager of the Seas to Singapore and China for year-round turnaround operations. RCI's ship Radiance of the Seas was also re-scheduled to not stop in Sydney, replacing the port of call with Melbourne and New Zealand. With just Voyager OTS, Port Sydney lost around 65,000 guests a year, which was estimated at approx AUD 32 million in passenger spending.

Australia's biggest cruise shipping company - Carnival Australia , represents a group of 7 brands on the market, the largest of which are P&O Cruises and Princess Cruises . A Carnival also struggles to berth in Sydney NSW, the company moved some of its vessels to Brisbane and Melbourne. For 2018, Carnival Legend had scheduled all 10 itineraries leaving roundtrip from Melbourne. Another Carnival Corporation -owned company - Cunard , was willing to homeport the ship Queen Elizabeth in Sydney for a record -2 month-long Australian season (February through April 2019) - Cunard's ever longest season in Australia. However, while the Cunard's preference was to homeport the ship in Sydney, due to unavailable berths, 3 of the pre-scheduled itineraries were changed for roundtrips from Melbourne.

  • Among the suggested solutions for this crisis was for cruise ships to share access to Garden Island with the Royal Australian Navy. Previously, Royal Caribbean (RCCL) was willing to invest tens of millions of dollars in building a new cruise terminal in Botany Bay.
  • Season 2017-2018 was the cruise port's record year with scheduled a total of 90 ship visits and over 130,000 passengers and crew. The estimated economic impact was around AUD 30 million.

In March 2022, the NSW government announced plans to upgrade Sydney Harbour with shore-power capabilities . The technology was scheduled to be installed at the facilities White Bay Cruise Terminal and Glebe Island and the facilities to be ready and operational in 2024. For this project wee allocated $60+ million, including for infrastructure upgrades. Shoreside power systems allow the berthed vessels to turn off their diesel engines and use the city grid's electricity for all onboard operations and hotel services.

Sydney cruise terminal

Sydney Harbour (port locode AUSYD) is one of the top cruise ports in the world. It is located on the eastern Australian coast with the Blue Mountains on the west.

Sydney Harbour (aka Port Jackson) has attracted visitors, settlers, business men and traders for a long time. The city of Sydney has a population of more than 4 million and it is the biggest Ozzie city. The harbor has two cruise terminals – the White Bay and the Overseas Passenger Terminal. Three cruise ships can anchor at the same time at Sydney Cruise port terminals.

(NEW) Yarra Bay Cruise Terminal

For 2020 was planned to start the construction works for a new passenger terminal at Yarra Bay (east of Sydney Harbour Bridge). However, these plans were temporary suspended (for 18 months) due to the global Coronavirus pandemic. The health crisis seriously impacted Australia (Sydney mostly) and resulted in worldwide shutdown of all cruise shipping operations.

The Yarra Bay project is an initiative of RCCL-Royal Caribbean, with co-funding from the NSW Government.

White Bay Cruise Terminal

White Bay cruise terminal operates since 2013. It is transformed ro-ro (grain) terminal. The Sydney cruise port terminal is open and large, capable to process more than 2000 tourists. Next to White Bay there is a drop off areas and a short time park zone. The Sydney cruise port terminal can accommodate two vessels at the same time – at pier 4 and pier 5. White Bay is close to the center of Sydney and close to Sydney Harbour Bridge. That makes it unavailable for the biggest cruise vessels due to under Sydney Harbour Bridge height restrictions.

Overseas Passenger Terminal

The second Sydney Cruise port terminal is situated at the Circular Quay. It is very close to main sights in Sydney, just across the Opera House. The building is a modern one with a lot of facilities.

The Overseas Passenger Terminal offers also a breathtaking Sydney Harbour view. The terminal serves larger cruise ships.

The NSW's capital city Sydney is among the high-ranked for quality of life cities and one of the most beautiful vacation travel destinations to visit, so try not to miss:

  • The Rocks: historical area with cafes, bars, shops, restaurants and galleries. Explore the Campbells Storehouse, Susannah Place, the Merchants House and Cadman’s Cottage. Next to Circular Quay. Is the Rocks area.
  • Sydney Opera House: located on the Sydney Harbor at Bennelong Point. Jørn Utzon is the designer of this world architectural wonder. Its opening was in 1973. It is near the Overseas Passenger Terminal and there you can enjoy amazing opera or ballet performances.
  • Royal Botanic Gardens: a green oasis located between the busy downtown and the blue ocean.
  • Sydney Harbour Bridge: see the Pylon Lookout or participate in the Sydney Harbour Bridge climb.
  • Bondi Beach is great for surfing. Enjoy that beautiful white-sand beach just 45 min away from Circular Quay (by bus 380).

Celebrity ascent: the best dining, amenities and more on celebrity cruises' newest ship.

Top-notch eateries, adults-only areas and entertainment options stand out.

Celebrity Ascent Review

The Solarium on the Celebrity Ascent.

Megan duBois

Key Takeaways

  • There are 32 different dining and drinking venues on board, from Le Voyage by celebrity chef Daniel Boulud to the line's iconic Martini Bar.
  • The onboard entertainment is incredible. The "Awaken" show combines popular music with acrobatics and lasers, while Ascent After Dark: Shine the Night invites cruisers to don metallic or sequin outfits for a deck party under the stars.
  • The Solarium adults-only pool area is a relaxing spot with comfortable lounge chairs, a pool and hot tubs; head to Eden for delightful cocktails and optimal sunset views.

You can think of Celebrity Cruises as the more adult cousin of Royal Caribbean International – which makes sense, considering both cruise lines are owned by Royal Caribbean Group. With all of the recent buzz around both brands, I was excited to sail on Celebrity Cruises' newest ship, Celebrity Ascent, in its debut month. I embarked out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in December 2023.

The 17-deck, 141,420-ton ship has 1,646 staterooms and can carry 3,260 guests at double occupancy. At 1,073 feet long and 128 feet wide, the ship has plenty of space for upscale amenities, edgy entertainment and incredible dining venues. The Edge Series ship also has more than 1,400 crew members who hail from 60 different countries around the world.

As an avid cruiser who has taken more than 50 ocean and river voyages on almost a dozen cruise lines, I found Celebrity Ascent lived up to the hype. The ship itself is stunning, and each area has a distinct vibe. I loved the ample amount of food and drink opportunities – there are 32 different venues – and the standout onboard entertainment was like nothing I had seen before on a cruise ship.

Celebrity Ascent itineraries

Thermal suite heated loungers on the Celebrity Ascent.

Celebrity Ascent sails around the Mediterranean and the Caribbean over the next few years. Summer 2024 brings Ascent to Mediterranean ports of call in Greece, Turkey, Italy, France, Spain and Portugal. The Mediterranean season ends in October 2024, with a 13-night transatlantic sailing departing from Barcelona, Spain.

Late fall and winter sailings depart from Fort Lauderdale. The Caribbean season runs between November 2024 and April 2025. It includes seven- to nine-night voyages calling on ports like Aruba , Bonaire and Curacao ; Bimini, Bahamas ; Labadee, Haiti; Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands ; Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic ; and St. Maarten and St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

In late April 2025, it's back to the Mediterranean for the 2025 season between May and October. Ascent then returns to the Caribbean for sailings in late 2025; destinations include southern Caribbean locales, plus the Panama Canal and Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas, Perfect Day at CocoCay. Similar Caribbean sailings are also on sale for early 2026.

Who should sail on Celebrity Ascent?

Sunset Bar on the Celebrity Ascent.

Celebrity Ascent, like its Edge Series sister ships, caters to adults traveling together. The overall vibe of the ship is upscale and modern, with plenty of places to grab a drink, enjoy a meal and watch a show. Couples can enjoy an elevated date night in Le Grand Bistro, while the aptly named Sunset Bar – which overlooks the rear of the ship – is the spot to be with a cocktail in hand as the sun sets into the horizon. This bar was easily my favorite spot on board; I spent most afternoons here enjoying a cocktail.

The deck parties, of which Ascent After Dark: Shine the Night is the premier event, are a fun time – but they aren't so loud that guests can hear the bass thumping in the staterooms below. Shows at The Theatre are fully immersive, with incredible technology and great music that had me dancing in my seat.

If you are traveling with children, know that there aren't many places on board for kids to just hang out and be kids. The Camp at Sea kids club is crammed into a small area on Deck 3, away from the main Grand Plaza and The Martini Bar.

Cruises on Ascent can be expensive, but Celebrity often runs deals on sailings. Without any promotions, sailings around the Mediterranean in 2024 and 2025 may run between about $1,000 and $5,600 per person. In comparison, 2024 and 2025 Caribbean voyages may cost between about $2,000 and $4,400 per person before discounts. (Note: Cruise rates can change frequently, based on demand and availability.)

The stateroom

Stateroom interior on the Celebrity Ascent.

There are over two dozen different stateroom styles on Celebrity Ascent. The smallest (and usually cheapest) rooms are the Inside Staterooms, which offer between 181 and 202 square feet of space. For solo travelers, the Single Inside Staterooms offer the same amenities as a double occupancy room, but with a smaller 103-square-foot layout and no single supplement fee at booking.

Ocean View Staterooms are slightly larger, at 200 to 242 square feet. There are three different room styles; the main difference among them is the size of the window. Options range from small windows in the middle of the wall to large, floor-to-ceiling picture windows.

Ascent's balcony cabins are quite varied, but the majority are Infinite Veranda Staterooms, where the balcony is actually a uniquely designed window that can be opened to let the ocean breeze in. There is a set of glass doors that can be drawn to make this space more private, as well.

Concierge Staterooms allow guests access to a dedicated concierge staff and exclusive onboard events. AquaClass cabins all feature the infinite balcony design, plus unlimited access to the SEA Thermal Suite, complimentary dining at Blu restaurant, fitness classes and a spa concierge.

Celebrity Ascent's suites are all part of The Retreat, the line's ship-within-a-ship concept where cruisers have access to an exclusive restaurant, a sun deck with a pool, a lounge and a dedicated crew. Suites range in size and style, from smaller 319-square-foot studios to massive two-bedroom suites offering more than 2,500 square feet of indoor and outdoor space.

When I sailed on Celebrity Ascent, I stayed in an AquaClass stateroom. The main living space had a king-size bed, which was cozy after long days of exploring the ship and nights spent on the dance floor. I found the cabin's couch a bit uncomfortable, but there was plenty of storage space in the large closet and drawers. Conveniently, the bed was high enough to fit my suitcases under.

Because this was my first time in an Infinite Veranda room, I was interested to see how the balcony actually worked. After pressing a button for the window to roll down, my room instantly filled with humid air – not the sea breeze I was expecting. The air conditioner also turns off when the window is down, so it takes a long time for the room to cool off again. I only opened the window once because of this. For me, the extra veranda space served as more of a sitting area to take in the views than a spot to enjoy the ocean breeze.

My stateroom's bathroom was spacious, with a larger-than-usual standup rain shower. I also loved the eco-friendly bath amenities, which smelled divine. I used the in-room bathrobes and slippers every day of the cruise.

I loved that my AquaClass stateroom came with some amenities that are not included in other Infinite Veranda rooms. There were two yoga mats, two bottles of water that were refreshed daily, a welcome bottle of sparkling wine, an umbrella, binoculars, complimentary shoeshine service and a pillow menu. AquaClass guests also have unlimited access to the spa's thermal suite, complimentary fitness classes and a dedicated spa concierge. I went to the thermal suite daily to enjoy the heated loungers and steam rooms.

Best amenities on Celebrity Ascent

Theater show on the Celebrity Ascent.

On Celebrity Ascent, you'll never be bored. Over just a few days, I was able to participate in game shows and dance parties, sit back and enjoy live music, and spend some time by the pool. While I don't gamble, the casino always seemed to be full when I walked by, and someone was always cheering about hitting the jackpot.

For live entertainment, be sure to catch Flash Flair Fusion, the nightly bartending performance at the Martini Bar. Meanwhile, the Theatre hosted three main shows during my sailing: "Residency," "Awaken" and "Bridges." (Based on my experience, "Awaken" is the production to prioritize.)

Additionally, The Club hosts most of the ship's game shows and some smaller live music events. I loved hanging out at this venue; it was never overly packed with people, and the games were pure fun. I even got called up on stage to participate in one of the games and ended up winning a Celebrity Cruises-branded hat.

For some outdoor fun, hit the onboard pickleball court. Or, head to the Rooftop Garden, where float pools face the ocean and plenty of comfy seating awaits. I loved how lush this space felt, thanks to all of the live plants surrounding the seating areas. This is also the spot to catch movies at night.

If you're looking for an even more unique place to hang out, head to The Magic Carpet. This bright orange, glass-encased bar hangs out over the side of the ship and is the perfect spot for an after-dinner drink. The Magic Carpet can move up and down the side of the ship, docking at select decks for a set amount of time. I loved hanging here at night as the ship was pulling out of port to see the islands light up and watch other ships pass by.

When planning out your evenings, keep in mind that it can be a trek to get from one onboard activity to the next – especially when there is very little time between many of the major scheduled events. One night, I started in The Club to watch a game show, then immediately had to get to the Theatre. After the theater performance, I had to walk the entire length of the ship and take the stairs to get to the night show in Eden. Then, after Eden, it was time for the Shine the Night deck party. By the time I got back to my stateroom, I was exhausted.

Best dining venues on Celebrity Ascent

Pastries at Le Grand Bistro on the Celebrity Ascent.

There are 32 different spots for food and drinks on Celebrity Ascent, including four main dining rooms; four casual complimentary eateries; eight specialty restaurants; 14 cafes, lounges and bars; and two exclusive venues.

Included with the base fare are meals at the four main dining rooms, all of which serve the same menus every day, plus a small exclusive menu that's tailored to the theme of each restaurant. (For example, if you're dining in Cyprus, there is a small list of Cyprus-exclusive dishes that highlight Mediterranean cuisine, while the Normandie restaurant serves up French favorites.)

Other restaurants included in the cruise rate are Eden Cafe & Bar, which serves light bites and sweets; Mast Grill, offering burgers and salads; and Oceanview Cafe, a buffet open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

For an additional cost, head to specialty dining venues like the stunning Le Voyage by Daniel Boulud, which is great for date night; Le Grand Bistro, a fun take on a classic French Bistro; or Eden Restaurant, which features an entirely plant-based menu.

My favorite specialty dining option – and overall favorite restaurant on the ship – was Raw on 5. It features stunning chilled seafood towers, fresh sashimi and hot dishes like fresh lobster and shrimp wontons. Each dish was prepared beautifully, the service was top-notch and our table next to the window offered great views.

However, one restaurant I would skip is Fine Cut Steakhouse. It is a pretty standard steakhouse, and nothing on the menu really stood out to me. The upscale ambiance was also diminished by music floating in from the nearby Grand Plaza and Martini Bar (think: everything from One Direction to Cher). While both artists are great to hear while sipping a martini in a public space, I don't want to hear them while dining at an expensive restaurant.

Best excursions on Celebrity Ascent

Outdoor sundeck on the Celebrity Ascent.

Travelers cruising to the Caribbean should book a beach outing. There are abundant excursion options in St. Maarten and St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands . If you're into local brews, try the Small Group: Brewery & Beach Tour Philipsburg, St. Maarten .

On a past Mediterranean cruise, I explored both Florence and Pisa, Italy, while docked in the Italian city of Livorno. Celebrity offers a similar excursion aboard the Ascent. The day trip includes a scenic drive through the Tuscan countryside; exploring Florence and seeing the Ponte Vecchio and the Duomo; and a trip to Pisa to see the iconic learning tower. In Rome , consider doing an all-day tour where you can see the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain and St. Peter's Square.

Regardless of where your cruise is headed, you may choose to explore ports on your own instead. If that's the case, be sure to give yourself enough time to get back to the ship. I always try to return at least an hour before the scheduled sail away time.

Overall impressions of Celebrity Ascent

Rooftop Garden on the Celebrity Ascent.

When it comes to ships that cater to a mostly adult audience, Celebrity Ascent really has it all. From stunning common areas to incredible dining and entertainment, I was never bored on this ship. What I loved most was the wide range of entertainment, from pop-up music around the ship to full-blown experiences that need to be seen to be believed. The food on the ship is a step above most other major cruise lines, and the number of dining options is great, especially for longer sailings.

While I loved my room's location and amenities as a whole, I found the Infinite Veranda design to be a bit of a waste. When I did use it, my room got hot quickly and took a while to cool back down. I would consider booking a traditional veranda cabin next time, or a stateroom with a large picture window to save some money without sacrificing the ocean views.

5 Ways to Use Your Onboard Credit

By Evelyn Uslar-Pietri  | Published on May 31, 2024

You’ve booked a cruise sailing from Sydney or Brisbane on Quantum Class favourites Ovation of the Seas® , Quantum of the Seas® or Anthem of the Seas® or the amped up Voyager of the Seas® and, in the process, you may have earned onboard credits (OBCs). But, as promising as they sound, they are also somewhat shrouded in mystery. Specifically, how do you access these OBCs – and once you’ve laid hands on them, what exactly can you use them for?

You will conveniently find your OBCs in your online account, which can be accessed at sign in , so you can book in the Cruise Planner before you board. Alternatively, you will find them on your Seapass® card, the personal onboard expense account you’ll use for all your onboard expenditures. When you make a purchase or pay for a service on your cruise, the onboard credits are applied. No fuss, no muss.

Now for the fun part: discovering the best ways to spend your bonus money (OR OBCs). Although many dining venues, activities and entertainment are included in your fare, Royal Caribbean® ships also offer exceptional speciality experiences - temptations you can wholeheartedly embrace with your budget-stretching OBCs!

Speciality Dining

Anthem of the Seas Izumi Sushi Chef

Foodies take note: you’re boarding one of the hottest food scenes found at sea! With scrumptious palate-pleasing options around every corner, the greatest difficulty is deciding what you want to eat! Does homemade linguine – perfectly al dente and tossed with garlicky prawns – sound like a ticket to paradise? Then head over to Jamie’s Italian by Jamie Oliver, a Tuscan-inspired eatery led by one of Britain’s most famous chefs.

Or are you in an Asian vein, craving melt-in-your-mouth sushi and a bowl of fragrant yaki udon? Look no further than Izumi Japanese Cuisine , where every swoon-worthy taste transports you to the Far East. Classic American steakhouse fare at Chops Grille℠, fantastical whimsy at Wonderland Imaginative Cuisine , the crown of gastronomy at Chef’s Table – a kaleidoscope of delicious flavours awaits you. And the best part? Your onboard credits can take a big bite out of the tab, or even eat the whole thing up!

The Lime and Coconut Bartender Mixing Cocktails

Onboard Entertainment and Activities

anthem flow roder hp desktop

When you book a cruise on Royal Caribbean, you can rightfully expect it to be packed with every kind of top-notch adventure. From the chart-topping Broadway show, We Will Rock You on Anthem of the Seas®, multimedia production shows and the thrilling ice skating show on Voyager of the Seas® to toe-tapping live music and parties the whole family can get in on. Movie nights, game shows and wow-worthy activities, like the FlowRider® surf simulator and bumper cars at SeaPlex® on Quantum Class ships or The Perfect Storm℠ waterslide duo on Voyager of the Seas® are all included. There’s so much to discover that you could keep your crew busy 24/7 and not run out of things to do!

Fortunately, almost everything is included in your cruise, with a small handful of exceptions. Games at the Royal Caribbean Arcade have an associated fee, as do certain games at SeaPlex . Your OBCs will also come in handy on skydiving simulator, RipCord® by iFLY® and  North Star®, the Guinness Book World Record holder for tallest viewing deck on a cruise ship. With its glass-enclosed capsule rising a staggering 100 metres above sea level, you are afforded 360° views of the surrounding world. These incur a cost when the ship is at sea and are worth every single OBC, in our humble opinion!

Have you ever been curious about what goes on behind-the-scenes on one of the largest cruise ships at sea? Then hop on an All Access Tour where you’ll get a first-hand peek of the Bridge, Engine Control Room and other inner workings.

If you are particularly interested in the epicurean side of things, the Sip Tour Brunch may be your special jam (Okay. No more puns)! Led by the Chef, you’ll roam the galley gleaning its secrets before tucking into a mouth-watering brunch paired with unlimited sparkling wine. Whether you choose to book through the Cruise Planner before you board or wait until you are onboard, cheers to OBCs well spent!

SPA AND Shopping

Kate Spade Purses

Shopping and OBCs are an inspired natural pairing, much like tea and biscuits. After all, what could be more satisfying than – quite literally – freely indulging yourself? Onboard Royal Caribbean, shopping is not only duty-free but you’ll discover a superb array of stores offering fine jewellery, Swiss timepieces, designer apparel and other enticements.

While the kiddos are enjoying their dedicated complimentary programs at Adventure Ocean , you may want to plan a few hours of much-deserved me-time, beelining for the spa. An oasis of relaxation and renewal, the spa offers massages, facials and medi-spa treatments, as well as complete hair and nail services. Put your OBCs to work in the name of beauty, and walk out feeling on top of the world.

Quality “me-time” can also be about perfecting skills or picking up new ones at a class: life-defining abilities such as crafting swans out of towels or turning a napkin into the perfect place setting are free. While decorating decadent cupcakes or attending a scrapbooking class may incur a small charge for materials – which your helpful OBCs will be happy to cover!

Shore excursions and More

RCI CocoCay Snorkel Family 04111 RET EXT RGB

A significant benefit of booking a Royal Caribbean cruise is that young seafarers have their own programmes, led by thoroughly screened and trained staff. Fusing fun and education, the award-winning Adventure Ocean, is designed for 3-11 year-olds. Although included in your fare, fees apply after 10 pm. Since there is also a cost associated with our Royal Babies & Tots programme  for 6-36 month olds, your OBCs can be put to excellent use with child-care.

You can even use them for shore excursions. Take your adventure underwater and discover a whole world that’s teeming with life in the South Pacific or lace up your hiking boots and discover the natural beauty of New Zealand. For professional photo packages, internet access and other onboard expenses, your OBCs can also be readily applied.

7 Best Cruises for Singles in 2024

Updated : May 29, 2024

AAA Travel Editors

Table of contents.

  • Celebrity Millennium: Bali, Malaysia and Thailand
  • Celebrity Apex: Norwegian Fjords
  • Celebrity Summit: Grand Heartland Adventure
  • Celebrity Edge: Taste of Luxury
  • Disney Wish: Bahamian Cruise from Port Canaveral
  • Oceania Cruises: In the Path of Cartier — Boston to Montreal
  • Oceania Riviera: Ancient World Wonders — Athens to Istanbul

Plan Your Cruise With AAA

With many cruise lines now catering to the single crowd, going on a cruise as a single adult can be a great way to meet interesting people to make new friends, new connections and lifelong memories.

No matter what you envision from your dream singles cruise, you can find a ship and a series of destinations that will create unforgettable memories. There are a lot of options to explore, however and the sheer range of choices can quickly feel overwhelming. To help, we've highlighted several of the best cruises for singles. Keep reading to learn what, exactly, sets these expeditions apart.

1. Celebrity Millennium: Bali, Malaysia and Thailand

Many singles gravitate towards exciting adventures in exotic destinations such as Bali, Malaysia and Thailand, which hold appeal simply because they provide such distinct scenery and such powerful cultural experiences.

Not all singles are willing or prepared to navigate these destinations on their own, however and this is where the Celebrity Millennium comes into play: an upscale cruise removes the hassle of planning and, instead, encourages you to relax in style.

This particular Celebrity Millennium adventure spans nearly two weeks, incorporating a unique blend of serene island adventures, cosmopolitan exploration and meaningful temple visits. Onboard, globally inspired menus and resort-style lounges are to be expected, along with plenty of adults-only spaces that will appeal to singles.

2. Celebrity Apex: Norwegian Fjords

If Norway's iconic fjords are on your bucket list, you can't afford to miss this awe-inspiring Celebrity Apex trip . Departing from Southampton, the eight-night cruise meanders along the coast of Norway, hitting pleasant spots such as Geiranger or Kristiansand for spectacular scenery and outdoor adventures. Side trips are available and, with up to ten hours docked, there is plenty of time to explore at your own pace.

Accommodation options abound and, when traveling alone, the staterooms' king-size mattresses feel extra spacious. An adults-only solarium will appeal to relaxation-oriented solo travelers, while abundant dining and entertainment options make it easy to find and connect with new friends.

3. Celebrity Summit: Grand Heartland Adventure

If you're struggling to choose between glamorous onboard experiences and outdoorsy experiences on land, you're in luck: Celebrity Summit provides the best of both worlds with its various Cruisetour offerings. There are many excellent options that depart from Vancouver, Anchorage or Fairbanks — but the Grand Heartland Adventure is worth considering if you crave something new.

During the Grand Heartland Cruisetour, you'll explore the stunning Inside Passage by cruise ship, before docking in adventure-oriented destinations such as Juneau and Sitka. From there, you'll continue to observe national treasures such as the Hubbard Glacier. Further exploration takes place aboard a glass-domed railcar and even a riverboat.

There's also a lot to experience onboard. The AquaClass stateroom represents a true oasis for single travelers, but the exclusive cocktail lounge and martini bar also warrant a visit. With nearly two weeks of cruising and exploration, you'll have plenty of time to unwind on your own but can also form fast friendships with similarly adventurous travelers.

4. Celebrity Edge: Taste of Luxury

Cruises for singles over 50 often emphasize the finer things in life, like elevated cuisine or exquisite wines. These sophisticated details are in abundant supply aboard the Celebrity Edge, which offers a decidedly elegant experience with its Taste of Luxury tour. Although often frequented by retired couples, Celebrity Edge's trips work well as singles cruises.

Available for three or four nights, this remarkable journey begins in Sydney and primarily emphasizes curated on-board experiences. That being said, there are enticing opportunities to explore while docked in Tasmania. With such glamorous suites, restaurants and clubs on board, however, the best attractions can be enjoyed without ever leaving this luxury cruise ship.

5. Disney Wish: Bahamian Cruise from Port Canaveral

Don't assume that Disney cruise adventures are only for kids or families. If you are a proud Disney adult, you can make amazing memories aboard a thematic cruise for singles. This is a popular vacation among theme park enthusiasts, who enjoy a dose of Disney magic while also finding valuable opportunities to indulge and relax.

Disney Wish's three-night Bahamian cruise is also an excellent option for singles who crave a sea-based experience but only have a few days to spare. Yes, young travelers will be around, but there are plenty of adult-only spaces, including sports bars, dance clubs, dedicated pools and even an onboard spa and salon. Musicals, 3D films and fireworks encourage you to embrace your inner child.

6. Oceania Cruises: In the Path of Cartier — Boston to Montreal

As we've mentioned, smaller ships provide some of the best cruises for singles over 50. Not everyone desires a river-based trip, however and with Oceania Cruises , there is no need to choose between exclusivity and ocean liner grandeur.

A signature experience can be found aboard Oceania Cruises' iconic Nautica ship, which is calming, yet elegant. Echoing the journey of the famed explorer Jacques Cartier, this tour provides a powerful introduction to Quebec, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and New Brunswick.

The land-based excursions are highly educational and, of course, beautiful to behold, but there's also a lot to love on board. Belgian chocolate, Bulgari amenities and turndown service await, with many accommodations also providing spectacular views. Open-seating dining makes it easy to interact with other vacationers while wine-tasting and guest lectures promise plenty of onboard enrichment.

7. Oceania Riviera: Ancient World Wonders — Athens to Istanbul

Another appealing option for singles who prefer slightly smaller ships, Oceania Cruises' Ancient World Wonders tour provides stops at some of the world's most iconic locations, such as Santorini and Corfu. Adventures in Dubrovnik and Istanbul can also be expected. On board this remarkable vessel, you'll gaze in awe at the Lalique Grand Staircase and, in general, enjoy a refined ambiance.

Be prepared to try new flavors and forms of expression as you explore unique offerings such as the Artist Loft and Culinary Center. Deep relaxation awaits at the Aquamar Spa or within your luxuriously contemporary stateroom or suite. This ten-night voyage provides plenty of time to lose yourself in the grandeur of the ship and the treasures of Greece, Montenegro, Croatia and Turkey.

It’s inevitable: Every spring when we pull together the Hot List , our annual collection of the world’s best new hotels, restaurants , and cruise ships , a staffer remarks that this latest iteration has got to be the best one ever. After a year’s worth of traveling the globe—to stay the night at a converted farmhouse in the middle of an olive grove outside Marrakech, or sail aboard a beloved cruise line’s inaugural Antarctic voyage—it’s easy to see why we get attached. But this year’s Hot List, our 28th edition, might really be the best one ever. It’s certainly our most diverse, featuring not only a hotel suite that was once Winston Churchill’s office, but also the world’s largest cruise ship and restaurants from Cape Town to Bali. We were surprised and inspired by this year’s honorees, and we know you will be too. These are the Hot List hotel winners for 2024.
