Port Everglades cruise port: A guide to cruising from Fort Lauderdale

As Cruises Return, Royal Caribbean CEO Discusses Lost Year

With 10 cruise lines sailing out of Port Everglades (and more to come) and 3 million-plus passengers annually, Fort Lauderdale's cruise port is the third busiest in the country — behind PortMiami and Port Canaveral (near Orlando).

Ships sail from Port Everglades mainly to the Bahamas , Mexico and the Caribbean , but many travelers choose to make Fort Lauderdale's world-famous beaches and waterways part of their vacation plans with pre- and post-cruise stays.

Arguably one of the best aspects of flying into and sailing out of Fort Lauderdale is the fact that Port Everglades is conveniently located less than 2 miles from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL). In fact, it's the closest cruise port to any airport in the country, which makes it easy to access for out-of-towners who want to fly in and cruise out on the same day.

Port Everglades is also an easy port to depart from on debarkation day because passengers can use Global Entry and the Mobile Passport Control app to skip long customs queues at the terminal.

Airports near Fort Lauderdale cruise port

cruise shuttle fort lauderdale

Cruisers sailing out of Port Everglades have two major South Florida airport options when booking flights: Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and Miami International Airport (MIA).

Most travelers prefer to fly into FLL because it's so close to Port Everglades, making transfers much quicker and cheaper than from MIA. In fact, it's possible to book a same-day flight and get to your ship within an hour of your flight landing.

MIA offers more daily flights on the whole. If you're flying in from overseas, MIA also offers more international flight options. Miami's airport might also be more appealing if you're a member of an airline loyalty program or a cardholder who wants to prioritize lounge access.

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) is the nearest airport to Port Everglades. Only 1.8 miles away, it's the closest airport to a cruise port in the country. Major carriers, including Alaska Airlines, Allegiant Air, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, JetBlue, Silver Airways, Southwest Airlines, Spirit Airlines and United Airlines, all fly into Fort Lauderdale's airport.

If you need to kill time between the cruise disembarkation and your flight time, the airport offers a United Club Lounge and a Delta Sky Club for passengers of those airlines, as well as an Escape Lounge in Terminal 3 that's open to all travelers in that terminal for a fee. FLL does not have a Priority Pass lounge , but Priority Pass members with restaurant perks get a dining discount at the Kafe Kalik restaurant in Terminal 4. (This perk might not be available to travelers with a membership through certain credit cards.)

Miami International Airport

About 40 minutes away from the Fort Lauderdale cruise port (often longer during rush hour), Miami International Airport (MIA) serves most major airlines, including Alaska, American, Delta, Frontier, JetBlue, Southwest, Spirit, Sun Country Airlines and United.

At MIA, lounge options include an American Airlines Admirals Club and a Flagship Lounge, a Delta Sky Club, an Amex Centurion Lounge for holders of The Platinum Card® from American Express and a Priority Pass lounge called Club America. To get access, you can buy a Priority Pass membership or hold a credit card that offers a membership, such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve® or the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card .

How to get to the Fort Lauderdale cruise port

Cruise line transfers

Cruise lines often offer transfers from the airport to the cruise port, but they're usually only available on the day the ship departs. A cruise line transfer wouldn't be an option for guests flying in earlier.

Cruise line transfers are priced per person, so if you're traveling with a group from nearby Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, it would be cheaper to split a taxi or an Uber or Lyft instead.

Transportation from FLL to Port Everglades through Disney Cruise Line, for example, is $45 per person each way. The cruise line doesn't offer transfers from MIA.

Hotel shuttles

Several hotels in the area offer shuttles to the airport for $8 to $15 per person, with select hotels offering complimentary shuttle service to the cruise port.

For more information on hotel options with free or paid shuttles, see the hotel section below.

Independent airport shuttles

Private shuttle companies like Go Airport and South Florida Shuttles offer shared rides from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport to Port Everglades from $15 to $27 per person. Shared shuttles to the Fort Lauderdale port are not typically available from Miami International Airport.

Independent van and car services

Companies like South Florida Elite Shuttle, Fort Lauderdale Airport Shuttle and Go Airport also offer private cars or vans to Port Everglades from both FLL and MIA.

Transportation from nearby FLL ranges from $65 for three people and three pieces of luggage to $105 for up to 10 passengers and 10 bags with Go Airport. Pricing starts upward of $120 from MIA.

Taxis and ride-hailing services

The average taxi fare from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport to Port Everglades is $20. To take a cab from the airport, exit your terminal on the arrivals level and follow the wayfinding signs to the nearest taxi stand.

Ride-hailing services from FLL, like Uber and Lyft, are typically slightly cheaper, often starting as low as $10. This rate can spike during periods of surge pricing, such as when everyone is disembarking the ship and calling for cars at the same time.

If you're heading to the port from Miami International Airport, the taxi fare to Port Everglades can run upward of $100 one-way. Exit baggage claim to find a taxi on the ground arrivals level.

Uber, on the other hand, can start around $55 for UberX, $70 for Comfort and $100 for Uber XL if you need to fit up to six people and more luggage. Pickup zones for ride-hailing services are stationed outside doors 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 11, 15, 20 and 23 on the ground arrivals level. Stand and wait at the middle median.

Port Everglades cruise port parking

cruise shuttle fort lauderdale

On-site parking

Port Everglades has two on-site parking garages and three parking lots providing more than 5,500 parking spaces for cruisegoers.

Heron Parking Garage serves Terminals 2 and 4 (with an air-conditioned elevated passenger bridge on the fifth floor that leads directly to Terminal 2), while Palm Parking Garage serves Terminals 19, 21, 25, 26 and 29 with shuttle service to Terminal 29.

Additionally, Lot A serves Terminals 19 and 26, Lot B serves Terminals 18 and 19, and Lot C serves Terminal 18.

Port Everglades' on-site parking costs $20 per day or $25 for oversized vehicles. If you're parking for less than a day, it's $4 for the first hour and $8 for up to five hours.

Park-and-cruise

Beyond the port, several private parking lots provide shuttle service to the cruise port. One of the cheapest park-and-cruise lot options is Park by the Ports, which offers parking rates starting at $9.99 per day. The shuttle is free for the first four passengers and is only about a 10-minute ride to the port.

Park 'N Go is another reliable option only a few blocks from the port. It has 24-hour staff and free on-demand shuttles to the port that will meet you at your vehicle. This lot starts as low as $10 per day if you reserve online in advance.

With both of these options, reservations are the only way to guarantee yourself a parking spot, but they do accept drive-ups as well.

Tropical Airport Parking is a unique option that lets you park your car at hotels with unused parking spaces. Their prices start at only $7.45 per day, and you must reserve a space in advance. The shuttle to the cruise port costs extra depending on which hotel you choose, so compare the total price to other options when you're deciding where to park.

Various hotels also offer park-and-cruise arrangements where you can keep your car at the hotel for the duration of your cruise if you stay for at least a night. SpringHill Suites Fort Lauderdale Airport & Cruise Port currently offers a hotel package that includes a complimentary round-trip airport shuttle and up to 14 nights of parking for one vehicle (the shuttle to the cruise port is extra).

In other cases, the price for parking is separate from the overnight hotel rate but is usually much cheaper than parking at the cruise port and makes the most sense if you already were planning a precruise hotel stay. Hampton Inn Ft. Lauderdale Airport North Cruise Port and Courtyard Fort Lauderdale Airport & Cruise Port, for example, offer post-checkout parking for hotel guests for only $5 to $10 per night and a paid shuttle to the cruise port.

Easy Ways to Get to Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale for a Cruise (Port Transportation)

Whether you are driving to the port or flying into Fort Lauderdale, you need to get to the cruise terminal before you can start your vacation! We’ve sailed from Port Everglades several times and can tell you about all your options (including our favorite) for getting to the cruise port.

cruise shuttle fort lauderdale

Sitting north of Miami, Port Everglades may not get the same amount of attention as its sister port, but it is one of the busiest departure ports in America, with millions of passengers sailing each year.

Thankfully, given the location its relatively simple to get there. Below, we have provided directions to the port and your best options for reaching the port.

Location of Port Everglades Cruise Port

First things first, despite the name, Port Everglades is actually located in Fort Lauderdale, right on the Atlantic coast. (You’ll often hear Port Everglades and Fort Lauderdale used interchangeably when talking about the port.)

The cruise terminal is just about three miles from the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport and about 25 miles north of the Miami International Airport .

Here is a map showing the cruise port in relation to the airport:

The port’s official address is 1850 Eller Drive, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33316 if you wish to map your route using GPS.

However, if you are sailing out of terminals 2 or 4 (which are located on the north side of the port), we recommend using 1801 SE 20th St, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33316  as the address. This will put you entering the port closer to your terminal.

If you are driving to the port, click here for parking information .

Getting From the Fort Lauderdale Airport to Port Everglades

Given the short distance, it’s easy to transport back and forth from the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood airport to Port Everglades. Unfortunately, there is not free shuttle that runs between the two points. That means you’ll need to arrange transportation.

Ride sharing sign

Uber/Lyft (Recommended)  You can use Uber or Lyft to get to the port from the airport easily ( see our guide here ). Rates will actually be a little lower than a taxi, and most people prefer to use these rideshare services due to their lower cost and higher convenience.

Rates for Uber/Lyft from the Fort Lauderdale airport to Port Everglades are about $15-20 per car.

One thing to note is that for that rate up to four people can ride in a car. With luggage, you might need a larger vehicle or take two cars if you are traveling with more than three people.

If you are unfamiliar with companies like Uber and Lyft, here’s how they work. First, you download the app to your smartphone, setting up an account and payment information. When you are ready for a ride, you simply open the app and select where you want to go.

A nearby driver will confirm your pick up and arrive shortly. After the ride, you’ll rate the driver through the app and also confirm payment through your credit card. No money changes hands, it’s all through the phone app.

At the Fort Lauderdale airport the pickup stops for these services are located in between terminals. You can follow the signage to get to the correct spot to then call your ride.

We will say that this area can get busy. We’d recommend having some patience as it can take 10-15 minutes before your car arrives. Other times, we’ve arrived and had no wait at all.

Given the price and convenience, we recommend taking Uber or Lyft, and it’s what we personally use to get to the port.

  • Cost: ~$15-$20 one-way per car

Taxis (Recommended)  If catching a cab, the ride is short (only about three miles or 10 minutes). Fares will run you about $18-21 each way . Remember that the fare is per car, not per person. Split the fare between four passengers and you pay only a few bucks each for a ride directly to the port (or any other location you desire). You can head to ground transportation at the airport and get a cab immediately whenever your plan arrives.

The upside of a taxi is that there should be no wait in order to get a ride. You simply arrive, and head to the taxi stand to be on your way. If you see a long line at the rideshare station, consider just using a cab.

  • Cost: ~$20 one-way per car

Hotel Shuttles to the Port One option that many people don’t think about are hotel shuttles. Because Fort Lauderdale is such a hub for cruising, a number of hotels offer perks to attract cruise passengers.

One such perk is a shuttle to the cruise port. Since the airport and cruise port are close to each other, many hotels will have a free (or low-cost) shuttle to/from the airport and then will also give you a ride to the cruise port if you stay with them for a night.

So if you’re staying the night in port, these hotels can be ideal to save some money on transportation.

We have a full list of hotel options with shuttles here . Below are several that offer both an airport and cruise port shuttle:

  • Embassy Suites by Hilton 17th Street
  • Hyatt Place Fort Lauderdale 17th Street Convention Center
  • Hampton Inn Ft. Lauderdale Airport North Cruise Port
  • Hampton Inn & Suites Ft. Lauderdale Airport/South Cruise Port

Other Ways of Getting to the Fort Lauderdale Cruise Port From the Airport Given the ease and cost of a taxi and Uber/Lyft from the Fort Lauderdale airport, there really isn’t a reason for alternate ways to get there.

For instance, cruise lines offer shuttles from the airport to the cruise port. However, these are typically expensive compared to catching a cab or rideshare and charged on a per-person basis. In this case, a ride might be $15-20 per person, each way. At that price, you could get a ride for up to four people in an Uber or taxi.

Similarly, independent shuttle services will likely end up being just as much — if not more — than a private ride. You’ll also have to wait on all the passengers heading to the port before you can leave.

Getting from the Miami Airport to Port Everglades (Fort Lauderdale)

cruise shuttle fort lauderdale

One of the benefits of sailing from South Florida is that you have two major airports to fly into for your cruise — Fort Lauderdale and Miami. This way, if Miami has a better schedule or is cheaper, you can fly there and then head to Port Everglades.

Fortunately, there are transportation options to get you from Miami to Fort Lauderdale to catch the ship. Expect the ride to take at least 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic.

Uber/Lyft (Recommended)  You can use Uber or Lyft to get from Miami to Port Everglades easily. Rates are significantly cheaper than using a taxi. For example, Lyft estimates a ride from the Miami airport to Port Everglades would be $50-55 one-way for up to four people . (Note that during busy times we have seen this price jump to $100 each way.)

That’s about $20-30 less than the rate of a taxi cab, making rideshare services like Uber and Lyft our preferred method of reaching the port.

What’s also a plus is that you can catch an Uber or Lyft from the airport and head anywhere you want (including hotels or points of interest). You don’t have to just head right to the port.

  • Cost: ~$50-$55 one-way per car

Taxis For our purposes, we’re assuming that you are flying into Miami for a Port Everglades cruise. Miami-based cabs are an estimated $100 from the Miami airport to Port Everglades . That price could vary based on traffic.

That seems expensive, but remember that is the fee for the entire car. Most shuttles, on the other hand, charge per person, which can make them more expensive for an entire group.

  • Cost: ~$100 one-way per car

Cruise Line Transfers Cruise lines offer transfer service from the Miami and Fort Lauderdale airports to the cruise terminals.

Royal Caribbean, for example, offers a shuttle between Miami and Fort Lauderdale for $37 per person, each way .

Cruise line transfers offer convenience, but we also find they can be expensive and restrictive. Many are only available on the day you cruise and the day you depart and only go from the airport to the cruise ship. If you’re flying in the day before, then a transfer from the cruise line won’t work.

As well, prices are per person. A family of four taking a $37 transfer each way from the Miami airport to Port Everglades would pay $296 to get back and forth! That’s why we suggest finding alternate ways to the port.

If you are still interested in cruise transfers, you can call your cruise line for more information about their shuttles.

  • Cost: ~$35-$40 one-way per person

Miami to Fort Lauderdale Shuttles In addition to the cruise line shuttles, there are independent shuttles that can get you to and from Port Everglades and the Miami airport. They can be cheaper than the cruise line transfers, but if traveling with more than one person, a rideshare still comes out on top.

In general, expect to see prices starting around $25 per person each way to get from Miami to Port Everglades . Keep in mind these prices can vary.

Shuttle Companies: GO Airport Shuttle | Metro Shuttle Service | South Florida Elite Shuttle |

  • Cost: ~$25 one-way per person (varies)

Hotel Shuttles While many hotels in Miami offer shuttles to the Miami port and many Fort Lauderdale hotels offer shuttles to Port Everglades, we don’t know of any Miami hotels offering shuttles to Fort Lauderdale.

If you plan to stay a night in the area, you can take an Uber or taxi to Fort Lauderdale and select a hotel that offers a shuttle to the port.

See our list of Fort Lauderdale hotels with cruise port shuttles here .

Private Cars/Limos It’s easy to go in style in south Florida. There are plenty of companies that will pick you up in a private car or even a limo. In fact, many of the same companies that provide shared shuttle service also have private car service too.

Of course, this service is typically a little pricier. However, if splitting the cost between four or more passengers, it can be surprisingly affordable.

We don’t recommend or discourage any of the following car services (we’ve never used them), but provide them as a starting point for you to see what’s available.

Private Car/Limo Companies:  Family Car & Limo Service | A1 Luxury Limousine   | Elite Limo  | Ft Lauderdale Limo | Quality Limo Service

  • Cost: Varies

You totally missed another option… rental car shuttle. Many rental car companies don’t upcharge for one-way rentals in state, thus someone from Orlando may find that one-way rentals would be cheaper or comparable in price to long-term parking. I noticed that parking options are in another article.

When staying at a nearby precruise hotel on 17th terminals 1,2 and 4 are within walking distance however you CANNOT easily walk into terminal 4 due to the security fence and check point. It’s doable but not advised with luggage. Might be ok for B2B shore walk though.

One Trip at a Time

Fort Lauderdale’s Port Everglades is a popular starting point for many cruises, and with good reason! However, navigating transportation options to the port can feel overwhelming. This guide simplifies things, laying out all your choices to get you to your cruise ship with ease.

Whether you’re driving your own car and need parking , flying in and require an airport shuttle, or considering a hotel with parking options, we’ll cover all the bases. This way, you can compare and choose the most convenient option for your upcoming adventure.

This post may contain affiliate links. Please read our   full disclosure policy here .

Fort Lauderdale is located about 30 miles north of Miami on interstates 75 and 95 (I-75 and I-95) and these are the routes most drivers will use to get to the port area. Only if you are coming in from further south will you come in on the famous Highway 1 from Key West.

Driving times from nearby major cities are:

  • Fort Myers: 2.25 hours (140 miles)
  • Orlando: 3.5 hours (220 miles)
  • Jacksonville: 5 hours (325 miles)
  • Tampa: 3.75 hours (265 miles)

Click more options , once your route is displayed, to open google maps in a new window

If you want to park at the port, check out the options here ; if you prefer to arrive the night before, check out these hotels which will let you park your car during your cruise if you stay the night.

There are two main airports you can use to get to Port Everglades. Fort Lauderdale airport caters mainly to low-cost carriers and is just a few miles from the port. If you use traditional carriers you may end up flying into Miami, 30 miles to the south.

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport (Code: FLL)

Just 3 miles from Port Everglades, if you can fly into here, your transit to the cruise terminal will be quick and easy.

Miami International Airport (Code: MIA)

The biggest airport close to Fort Lauderdale is in Miami. An American Airlines hub, Miami International is located in the centre of Miami and thirty miles south of the cruise terminal.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Public transport is not really an option from Fort Lauderdale Airport. Whilst you can catch a bus from the rental car   centre , it doesn’t take you close enough to the port to be worth it.

Public transport can take you from Miami to Fort Lauderdale Airport, reducing the cost of one of the options below.

The fastest option is the RedCoach which leaves regularly and takes about 45 minutes to get from Miami airport to Fort Lauderdale airport. It costs between $21 and $41 depending on the time you need to travel. Click here  for more information.

For Fort Lauderdale Airport, a taxi will not be expensive as the port is just a few miles away. Picking up a taxi from the taxi stand at the airport is probably easiest.

For Miami Airport, we advise smaller groups of cruise passengers to use one of the cheaper options available. But if you are a larger group, prices can be competitive with other options. If you want the luxury of a private transfer, the companies below can accommodate you.

Offering minibuses for up to 14,   Airport City Transfer   should be able to meet your transport needs.

Kiwi Taxi can provide private transfers for between 1 and 16 cruise passengers

Uber  and  Lyft will cost between $13 and $19 for a transfer from Fort Lauderdale Airport to Port Everglades and between $55 and $90 for a transfer from Miami International Airport to Port Everglades. These rates are  for the standard Uber X or standard Lyft.

For a discount on your first ride click for UBER or LYFT

With the Fort Lauderdale Airport so close to the cruise terminal, a shuttle probably won’t be your best option. Super Shuttle   can sell you a return transfer for around $60, but it will actually be in a taxi!

From Miami Airport Metro Shuttle Service can get 2 – 9+ passengers to Port Everglades for between $14 and $25 each way.

Renting a car for just a few hours is our favourite way to get to the cruise terminal from the airport. Once we discovered the option and tried it, we found it to be the perfect solution. As long as you don’t mind driving, possibly on the “wrong” side of the road for you, it gives you a private transfer that leaves on your schedule and can be surprisingly competitive with other transportation options.

Given the proximity of Fort Lauderdale Airport and Port Everglades, we would only recommend hiring a car if planning to head out and see the sights, otherwise, it probably doesn’t make sense to use this option. If you do rent a car, you could pay as little as $37 for less than a day’s rental.

But, if you are flying into Miami, this option could make a lot of sense. A small car can be rented for as little as $55 for less than a day, allowing you to drive yourself to the port.

HOTEL TRANSFER

With the cruise port right in the heart of the city and Fort Lauderdale airport just minutes away, it’s worth looking at a hotel which is close to one and provides a shuttle service to the other. Check out our  Fort Lauderdale hotels  section for more information.

CRUISE COMPANY TRANSFER

Paying the cruise company to get from the airport to the ship is rarely good value, especially if more than one or two people need a transfer. But, it does make the transfer easier as you’ve booked everything through the cruise line and therefore can rely on them to get you to and/or from the airport.

Our cruising experts have crafted this Florida cruise port guide to help you understand the logistics of each port, so you can start your cruise on the right foot.

Disney cruise passenger with pending sex crimes case caught with child sex abuse videos, authorities say

Feds: he had just gotten off ship at port everglades.

Chris Gothner , Digital Journalist

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Federal agents caught a man facing two child sex crime charges in Ohio with child sexual abuse material on his phone after he disembarked a Disney cruise ship at Port Everglades, authorities said.

Dakota Anthony Ferguson, 22, of Columbus, Ohio, appeared in Fort Lauderdale federal court on Monday on charges of transportation and possession of child pornography. Authorities arrested him after a border search of his cellphone after he got off the Disney Magic on Saturday, a federal criminal complaint obtained on Tuesday states.

Recommended Videos

Franklin County, Ohio court records obtained by Local 10 News show that Ferguson is facing two counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor after being arrested by the Columbus Police Department. According to those records, Ferguson was indicted in that case in September 2022.

In the latest case, court documents state that U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials conducted a secondary examination on Ferguson and found “numerous videos” of child sexual abuse material on his cellphone, “the majority of which” depicted prepubescent girls being raped or otherwise sexually abused.

Authorities said Ferguson admitted that he began looking at child sexual abuse material three years ago and has viewed and shared it on platforms including messaging app Telegram and social media outlet X, formerly known as Twitter. Agents allege that he’s purchased videos depicting victims as young as 2.

In one instance, federal authorities said Ferguson sent a video to a Telegram user with a caption implying that the footage showed him raping a family member.

Ferguson “denied producing this video, stating his only intent was to give the perception of production,” Homeland Security Investigations Special Agent Katherine Leonard wrote in the criminal complaint.

Ferguson’s Ohio indictment shows that he’s accused of engaging in “sexual conduct” with a victim between the ages of 13 and 15 in 2021, when he was 19. Records show he has pleaded not guilty in the case.

Local 10 News has contacted Disney Cruise Line inquiring about its background check procedures for passengers.

Ferguson remained held in the Broward Main Jail as of Tuesday; he’s scheduled to appear again in front of a Fort Lauderdale federal judge for a bond hearing next Monday.

Local news | fort lauderdale fallout: former city manager fires back at ethics watchdog over misconduct claims.

Greg Chavarria, the former city manager of Fort Lauderdale, claims a report by the Broward Inspector General saying he violated the charter by not living in the city is full of inaccuracies. (John McCall/South Florida Sun Sentinel)

One of those enemies sent a tip to the Inspector General claiming Chavarria wasn’t living in town, as required by the city charter.

The Broward Office of the Inspector General released a preliminary report on May 30 saying it used SunPass records to show Chavarria did not live in Fort Lauderdale until September 2023. That was 14 months after he took over as city manager.

Chavarria has since resigned, making his exit on June 1. He announced plans in early April to resign from his $291,000-a-year job in 60 days, citing personal reasons.

In the report, investigators with the Inspector General’s Office accused Chavarria of engaging in criminal misconduct when he changed his address with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles to that of a condo unit they say was not his legal residence.

Chavarria is now firing back at the Inspector General’s Office, claiming they got it wrong.

His attorney, Mark Eiglarsh, sent a blistering letter this week to Inspector General Carol J. Breece claiming the report was filled with inaccuracies and false allegations that have “tarnished” Chavarria’s reputation.

“Their claim that he didn’t live in the city of Fort Lauderdale during the entire term is false,” Eiglarsh said in an email to the South Florida Sun Sentinel.

He declined to address the issue of the SunPass records, saying his client would provide evidence at the Inspector General’s request.

“If we believe that the OIG is sincere about correcting the record and/or learning the full truth, we will work with them to provide additional evidence,” he said by email.

Eiglarsh also objected to the fact that Chavarria received the preliminary report on the same day as the city – standard operating procedure for the Office of the Inspector General.

“We take exception to the release of the report before affording us the opportunity to correct the record and to provide evidence to them,” he said by email. “Fundamental due process requires a person accused of a crime to be afforded the opportunity to properly defend themselves before being crucified publicly.”

Breece declined to comment, saying the Inspector General’s Office doesn’t comment until the parties have a chance to respond and the report becomes final.

“I take great exception to the fact that your office published your report without first sending it to me for review with my client for accuracy,” Eiglarsh wrote in a letter to the Inspector General dated June 3.

His letter honed in on just a few of what he called “the many inaccuracies” contained in the report.

“The allegation that Mr. Chavarria did not appear to reside at East Point Towers is thoroughly false,” his letter states. “Mr. Chavarria registered both of his children in public schools in Fort Lauderdale and routinely dropped them off at school. Unfortunately, because both children struggled academically in their newly assigned schools and were victims of severe bullying, Mr. Chavarria and his wife were forced to make the difficult decision to withdraw them from the school and move them back to their prior school, outside the city limits.”

Chavarria’s attorney also took issue with this line from the Inspector General’s report: “And most telling, Mr. Chavarria never sought reimbursement for moving expenses from the city.”

But the reason Chavarria did not seek reimbursement for his moving expenses was because his employment contract required him to hold the position for two years before he qualified for the reimbursement, Eiglarsh wrote in his response to the Inspector General.

Both the city and Chavarria were given 30 days to respond to the Inspector General’s preliminary report. The deadline: 4:30 p.m. on July 1.

The prospect of sending a letter of response to the Inspector General sparked a spirited debate on the dais between Mayor Dean Trantalis and Commissioner John Herbst Tuesday night.

Trantalis, a Chavarria ally, said he plans to write his own response and welcomed other commissioners to do the same.

Herbst, a Chavarria critic, argued that Acting City Manager Susan Grant should send a response explaining how Fort Lauderdale plans to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

The commission plans to conduct a nationwide search for a new city manager.

But the hire won’t be made until after city elections on Nov. 5.

Herbst moved to fire Chavarria as soon as he joined the commission two years ago, but didn’t have the votes.

On Tuesday, Herbst said he didn’t want to focus on Chavarria. But, he noted, the Inspector General’s report had identified lapses in the city’s internal control structure.

“My recommendation is that we need to reply to the (Inspector General) and lay out a program of enhancements to our internal controls,” Herbst said. “My suggestion is that it require an annual certification from those individuals that are required to live here by charter, verified by the city auditor. I think that’s part of fraud, waste and abuse and it falls within his wheelhouse. I think we can’t let this go without providing a response from the city to go along with the report.”

In response, Trantalis said he doesn’t think it makes sense to require the city manager to live in town.

“Right now we’re doing a nationwide search for a city manager,” he said. “Let’s say we find someone from Seattle that wants to be city manager of Fort Lauderdale. Obviously on day one, they’re not going to be able to live here. So we’ll give them a little bit of time to make changes in their lives. And sometimes those transitions don’t always work out.”

Trantalis argued the charter should eliminate the residency requirement.

“I think that from time to time we need to understand that trying to encourage the best people to work for our city, the commission itself needs to make adjustments in order to ensure that the talent remains with us,” he said. “I think the talent is more important than the residency. And I think that whole idea of residency is anachronistic as a requirement.”

Changing the charter would need the approval of Fort Lauderdale voters. But with the deadline to send referendum items to the Broward Supervisor of Elections coming up on Monday, the city is running out of time to get it on the ballot for this November.

That means any changes to Fort Lauderdale’s charter likely won’t make it onto the ballot until 2026.

For now, the city is stuck with the charter it has, Herbst said.

“You cannot waive the charter,” he said. “You cannot simply decide that we’re not going to follow the charter because you find it inconvenient. So whoever we hire right now, by charter, by law, has to live in the city. It’s not optional, mayor. And if someone doesn’t want to live here, they don’t apply for the job.”

In the end, Trantalis advised the acting city manager not to send a response to the Inspector General, citing the lack of consensus.

Some might argue that the residency requirement is important and others might think it’s not a big deal, said Bob Jarvis, a law professor at Nova Southeastern University.

“That’s in the eye of the beholder,” Jarvis told the Sun Sentinel. “If you believe that a city manager can’t do his job unless living in the city, you’d want the OIG to go after someone who is not complying with the residency requirement. If you don’t think it’s important, you’re going to wonder why they’re wasting their time.”

In the case of elected officials, a political opponent might be the one to report someone for not living in town.

“But a city manager might have people who don’t like him too,” Jarvis said. “No one in public life can escape it. Anyone who has high visibility has enemies.”

Coco Gauff is a Grand Slam champion in singles and doubles. She did not expect it to happen so soon.
