Norwegian, Carnival and more cruise lines change itineraries due to Hurricane Beryl

As Hurricane Beryl moves across the Caribbean, a number of cruise lines have changed itineraries in the area in an effort to avoid the storm.

▶ Norwegian Cruise Line altered nearly the entire itinerary for a week-long sailing on its Norwegian Breakaway ship that departed from Miami, Florida, on Sunday. The line canceled stops in Honduras, Harvest Caye in Belize, and Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico, according to a letter sent to guests that the line shared with USA TODAY. The ship will instead visit Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, St. Thomas, Tortola, and Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas instead.

“While we share your disappointment, these modifications were made with great consideration as your safety, and that of our crew, is always our number one priority,” the letter said.

The line similarly changed a week-long sailing aboard Norwegian Jade that left Port Canaveral on Saturday, replacing planned calls in Falmouth, Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Cozumel with San Juan, Puerto Rico, Tortola and Puerto Plata.

▶ Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Liberty ship moved a planned Friday stop in Cozumel up to Tuesday. The vessel departed on a week-long cruise from New Orleans, Louisiana, on Sunday, according to CruiseMapper .

Carnival Horizon, which is sailing a six-day itinerary that left Miami on Sunday, will skip a visit to Grand Cayman on Wednesday.

“The safety of our guests and crew is paramount, and we are continuing to monitor forecasts and factor in guidance from the National Hurricane Center, U.S. Coast Guard, and the local port authorities to provide timely updates to our guests as more information becomes available,” spokesperson Matt Lupoli said in an emailed statement.

▶ Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Fantasy ship – which set sail on a week-long cruise from Port Canaveral on Saturday – will not visit Falmouth as planned on Wednesday. The stop will be replaced with a sea day .

The center of the storm is expected to “move quickly across the southeastern and central Caribbean Sea today,” passing near Jamaica on Wednesday and the Cayman Islands the following day, the National Hurricane Center said.

Hurricane Beryl Forces Itinerary Changes in the Caribbean

As Hurricane Beryl is elevated to a category five storm, a number of cruise lines have confirmed itinerary changes in the Caribbean.

According to The Weather Channel , after moving south of Puerto Rico and Hispaniola on Tuesday, Beryl is expected to take a west-northwest track in the Caribbean through the rest of this week

Carnival Cruise Line has stated that its Fleet Operations Center in Miami is actively monitoring forecasts for possible itinerary impacts related to the hurricane.

Two vessels, the Carnival Horizon and the Carnival Liberty, have had their itineraries adjusted due to Beryl’s path.

According to the company, the Horizon had its visit to Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands on July 3 cancelled, while Liberty’s upcoming visit to Cozumel, Mexico was moved forward and will now take place on July 2 instead of July 5.

“The safety of our guests and crew is paramount, and we are continuing to monitor forecasts and factor in guidance from the National Hurricane Center, U.S. Coast Guard, and the local port authorities to provide timely updates to our guests as more information becomes available,” Carnival said.

Norwegian Cruise Line has also changed the itineraries of two of its ships currently cruising in the Caribbean.

Originally scheduled to offer an itinerary to the Western Caribbean, the Norwegian Breakaway is now offering a cruise to the Eastern Caribbean after departing from Miami on June 30.

“To circumvent the path of Hurricane Beryl and forecast inclement weather, we made the decision to take a safer, alternative route,” the company said in a statement sent to guests onboard.

Instead of visiting Mexico, Honduras, and Belize, the Breakaway will now visit the Bahamas, St. Thomas, Tortola and the Dominican Republic over the next few days.

Norwegian Jade’s current cruise has also been rerouted to avoid Beryl’s path. After departing from Port Canaveral on June 29, the vessel was scheduled to visit Jamaica, the Cayman Islands and Mexico.

Instead of the Western Caribbean destinations, the ship’s itinerary now sails the Eastern Caribbean, with planned visits to Puerto Rico, Tortola, and the Dominican Republic.

Three Royal Caribbean International vessels, the Icon of the Seas, the Wonder of the Seas and the Harmony of the Seas, have seen significant itinerary changes.

Instead of visiting destinations in the Eastern Caribbean, the Icon’s itinerary now includes visits to Cozumel and Costa Maya in Mexico.

The Wonder of the Seas skipped a visit to Honduras and replaced a stop in Costa Maya with a new visit to Nassau.

Sailing to the Western Caribbean from its homeport in Galveston, the Harmony of the Seas dropped a visit to Honduras and advanced visits to Cozumel and Costa Maya.

Other vessels that have seen itinerary changes include Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Fantasy and Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Beyond.

Hurricane Beryl: Here’s the Potential Impact on Cruises

Update (12:45 p.m., July 1): We have updated the article below to reflect the latest information regarding changes to cruises for Carnival Horizon and Carnival Liberty.

Hurricane season is off to an early start, with Hurricane Beryl forming and rapidly intensifying to the earliest category 4 Atlantic hurricane on record.

Currently sitting about 500 miles southeast of Puerto Rico, the storm is battering the Lesser Antilles as it makes its way into the Caribbean Sea.

Beryl is generating maximum sustained winds of 140 miles per hour . If there is good news, forecasts are for the storm to weaken from here, hopefully reducing its impact and potential damage.

For cruise passengers on vacation in the Caribbean, however, there are already impacts being felt in the form of itinerary changes, with more likely in the coming days.

Forecast models are in agreement that the storm’s track will take it through the middle of the Caribbean, on a beeline that will take it near Jamaica and then into the Yucatan Peninsula. As a result, a number of busy cruise ports, including Ocho Rios and Falmouth (Jamaica), Roatan, Costa Maya, and Cozumel are all in the possible path or could see the impacts.

So what changes are being seen already?

Itinerary Changes to Cruises

So far, we have heard news of a number of itinerary updates in order to keep ships clear of the impending storm. Here’s what we know so far:

That said, there are a number of ships scheduled for the ports in the area that we haven’t heard exactly what changes (if any) will be made.

Potentially Impacted Ships & Sailings

We’ve looked at the port schedules for the coming week and identified a number of sailings that could be impacted. However, at this time we have not heard word that changes have been made to the sailings listed below.

In addition, we’ve contacted both Carnival and Royal Caribbean and asked to be alerted to any updates. Keep in mind that just because a ship is listed here does not mean it will definitely be affected by the storm.

Note: As of this original article (11:00 a.m., July 1), a Carnival representative told us they don’t “have any updates at the moment” but will let us know of any changes. (Carnival has now shared updates to the schedules for Horizon and Liberty, listed above.)

About Carnival Cruise Line

With 28 ships and 5.2 million passengers annually, Carnival Cruise Line is one of the two largest cruise lines in the world. The youngest member of the fleet is Carnival Panorama (4,008 passengers), which will start its first cruises in December 2019 as another newbuilding in the Vista class.

It will be followed in August 2020 by Mardi Gras, the largest ship to date (5,200 guests) and the first ship to be operated with liquefied natural gas (LNG). A further LNG cruiser is to follow in 2022. Since 1993, Carnival Cruise Line has only been a founding company of the Carnival Corporation, which was formed at that time, and is still under its flag today. Since then the fleet has grown steadily in parallel with its popularity. Meanwhile the fleet consists of 26 ships and there is no end in sight. After a newbuilding in 2018, new ships will also be added in 2020 and 2022.

Carnival shares rise as flood of demand for cruise bookings bolsters record quarterly results

After cruises became the canary in the coal mine for the tourism industry’s decimation during the pandemic, bookings have come roaring back. The biggest winner is cruise companies, with Carnival reporting on Tuesday that it had reached record revenue in the second quarter of 2024.

The outlook for the cruise giant is even rosier for 2025, with advanced bookings set to be higher than in 2024. Analysts at UBS maintained their buy rating on the stock, setting a target price of $21. Carnival shares rose Tuesday on the news, reaching $18.40 at time of publication after hovering around $16 at the start of the week.

A rising tide

After a disastrous 2020 and 2021, which saw cruise companies lose tens of billions of dollars and become saddled with debt, they won back customers with what a Morningstar analyst referred to as "diplomatic pricing"—offering deep discounts and packaging together amenities.

In Tuesday's second-quarter earnings release, Carnival announced it had prepaid around $6.6 billion in debt over the last 15 months, reducing its debt by nearly 40%. With growing revenue, however, the company also has invested in infrastructure, including installing the Elon Musk–run internet service Starlink across its fleet and launching a new ship called Queen Anne, which can hold 3,000 passengers.

Competition remains steep, with Royal Caribbean unveiling the Icon of the Seas, the world's largest cruise ship, in January. Carnival's market cap of $23 billion is just over half of Royal Caribbean's $41 billion, though it remains the largest company in the industry by number of boats. The Switzerland-based Viking remains the smallest of the big three, with a market cap of around $13 billion.

Despite the positive outlook, UBS analysts warned that an economic slowdown, especially in the U.S. and Europe, could impact booking levels and pricing. Fuel prices remain another concern. Still, Tuesday's financials outperformed the analysts' expectations, largely driven by increased bookings and higher pricing. According to a separate report from Morningstar, booking patterns indicate that 2025 could yield higher results than the 3% previously predicted.

A May report from the trade association Cruise Lines International Association attributed the growth to new passengers, with 27% of "cruisers" over the past two years embarking on their first voyage, an increase of 12% over the past year. According to the report, cruise tourism rebounded faster than other forms of travel after the pandemic, with 31.7 million passengers in 2021 compared with pre-pandemic numbers of 29.7 million in 2019.

Carnival Stock Sails Higher on Surprise Profit, Upbeat Forecasts

C arnival reported an unexpected quarterly profit and said it expects a blockbuster year for cruises in 2025, sending the stock higher.

For its second fiscal quarter, ended May 31, Carnival reported adjusted earnings per share of 11 cents, flying past Wall Street’s call for a loss of 1 cent, according to FactSet.

Revenue was $5.78 billion, compared with the consensus call for $5.68 billion.

“The company continues to experience strong bookings momentum driven by record booking volumes for 2025 sailings,” according to the earnings release. “While still early, the cumulative advanced booked position for full year 2025 is even higher than 2024 in both price (in constant currency) and occupancy.”

For its third quarter, Carnival expects adjusted earnings per share of about $1.15, compared with analysts’ consensus call for $1.11. For all of 2024, the company anticipates adjusted earnings per share of about $1.18, while analysts had penciled in $1.02.

Carnival shares were up 5.2% to $17.24 on Tuesday. The stock tradedhigher for its sixth day in a row and was on track for its longest winning streak since Dec. 8, 2023, when it rose for 10 consecutive days, according to Dow Jones Market Data.

Cruise line peers were in the green as well: Royal Caribbean climbed 3.3% and Norwegian Cruise Line rose 3.7%.
