Top sights & attractions on cruises to new orleans, french quarter.

The bohemian 18th-century French Quarter is the city’s cultural hub, which is rich in history, architecture, and music. Explore the jazz bars of Bourbon Street, and stroll streets lined by colorful 18th and early 19th-century houses adorned with filigree cast-iron balconies. Visit St. Louis Cathedral, the oldest cathedral in the United States, and watch street performers in Jackson Square. Head for the fabulous French Market for more music, gourmet treats, and art.

The Garden District

Easily reached on the historic St. Charles Avenue Streetcar, this upscale neighborhood displays another face of the architecture of the Deep South. Here, you’ll find historic homes and grand, sometimes charmingly faded mansions built by some of the city’s famous residents. Ancient oak trees festooned by Spanish moss curve dramatically over the sidewalks, adding to the leafy atmosphere. While you’re here, explore Magazine Street, lined with top-notch boutiques, bars, and restaurants.

World-Class Museums

New Orleans is packed with superb museums and galleries. The National WWII Museum vividly tells the story of war, while the Contemporary Arts Center offers rotating exhibits of painting, sculpture, film, and photography. Mardi Gras World isn’t a museum, as such, but provides a fascinating insight into the work behind those dazzling Mardi Gras floats. Sazerac House, with its own distillery, takes you through the history of the city’s cocktail culture.

A local guide will point out all the sights and regale you with facts, figures, and gossip, while you’ll have a chance to taste delicious local specialties and listen to calliope music and live jazz.

Join a Ghost Tour

Start in the French Quarter and visit the New Orleans Pharmacy Museum, a place of historic medical contraptions and reputed paranormal activity. LaLaurie Mansion has a grisly history and is believed to be the most haunted house in the French Quarter.

Top Food & Drink Spots in New Orleans

New Orleans has an exciting and distinctive cuisine, influenced by Creole and Cajun spices and traditions. Jambalaya is a thick, spicy stew including chicken, sausage, shrimp, rice, and vegetables. Gumbo, meanwhile, features meat or shellfish cooked in a punchy stock and is flavored with celery, bell peppers, and onions, with rice served on the side.

Po’ Boy is a meaty sandwich served on French bread, while Etouffée is a rice dish topped with a roux sauce and shrimp or crawfish. These crustaceans, incidentally, are like mini freshwater lobsters, best cooked in a big pot with corn, potatoes, and Cajun spices.

Dig into the quintessential New Orleans dessert, the sugary beignet, best enjoyed with coffee at the famous Café du Monde, 800 Decatur Street.

Culture & History of New Orleans

New Orleans has a unique heritage, making it completely different from other cities in the U.S. The city was founded in 1718 by French colonists and handed to Spain in 1760, after which time it flourished as a port. Following the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, New Orleans became part of the U.S. Since then, despite various booms and slumps, not least the Depression, New Orleans has fostered a multi-cultural ambiance that combines French and Spanish Creole with southern roots and an eclectic arts and music scene.

Locals are passionate about the city’s jazz heritage and Creole cuisine and take enormous pride in the annual Mardi Gras festival, a celebration that occurs 47 days before Easter. This is one of the largest celebrations in the U.S. with parades, concerts, food, and those famous Mardi Gras beads.

New Orleans Cruise Port Facilities & Location

Cruise ships dock at the Julia Street Cruise Terminal on the Mississippi River in the heart of the city, just a five-minute drive from the French Quarter. It’s served by the Riverfront Streetcar Line, on which vintage streetcars transport you between the aquarium and the French Market. There are souvenir stands, a refreshment outlet, restrooms, Wi-Fi, and an ATM in the terminal itself. Julia Street Cruise Terminal is located in the midst of shops and restaurants; it’s right next door to Riverwalk Outlets, which is packed with places to eat, shop, and drink.

Transportation in New Orleans

Getting around New Orleans is easy. Many visitors enjoy walking, as there’s so much to see and the center is relatively compact, but taxis and rideshares are widely available. Riding the old-fashioned streetcars is fun, and the four main lines take in all the major sights. You can also rent a bicycle and explore 100 miles of cycle lanes, zip around by ferry, or summon a pedicab and take in the sights while chatting to your “driver”.

Shopping Near the New Orleans Cruise Port

Shopping in New Orleans is spectacular, ranging from quirky local specialty stores to high-end designer labels. Within a short walk of the cruise terminal, you’ll come to the Outlet Collection at Riverwalk, where you’ll find discounts on numerous popular brands. For the most upscale shopping, head to Canal Place on Canal Street, where you’ll find luxury retailers.

For some authentic New Orleans souvenirs, head to the French Market. Here, you’ll find colorful carnival masks, voodoo dolls, any number of hot and spicy sauces to take home, Mardi Gras beads, and pralines. Beignet mix is another fun item to take home to recreate your time in the Big Easy.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The currency in New Orleans is the U.S. Dollar. ATMs are located all around the city, including one located within the cruise terminal.

Tipping is part of the local culture here, as it is throughout the U.S. It is customary to tip 15% to 20% of your total bill in restaurants, while taxi drivers, bartenders, and baristas also appreciate a gratuity. Tip good tour guides around 10 percent of the cost of the tour, per person.

Carnival Cruise Line Celebrates 30 years of Saliling from New Orleans

Carnival Liberty Arrives to Welcome First Guests from New Homeport, Solidifying Carnival’s Year-Round Commitment in Port NOLA   NEW ORLEANS – May 6, 2024 – Trumpets blared aboard  Carnival Liberty  today as Carnival Cruise Line celebrated its  30th year sailing from  New Orleans . Community leaders and the cruise line’s Chief Culinary Officer Emeril Lagasse, world-famous for his New Orleans cuisine, were on board to mark the important milestone just after the ship arrived in its new home of Port NOLA for the first time.              Carnival’s Chief Communications Officer Chris Chiames and former Carnival Corporation CEO Arnold Donald, a New Orleans native, thanked local leaders for their longstanding partnership. Carnival is the top cruise operator in New Orleans and the only ocean cruise line to homeport in the city year-round. Nearly seven million guests have cruised from Port NOLA on a  Carnival ship  since the cruise line began the port’s first year-round service from the city in 1994.             “It’s an honor to share this great milestone and build on our successful partnership with the city and the port of New Orleans. We sail more than 400,000 guests from Port NOLA annually and for every one of them, our goal is the same: providing a fun and memorable vacation. That’s certainly a shared objective with the City of New Orleans, for all its visitors, which drives our partnership’s continued success,” said Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy. In the spirit of marking the special 30-year milestone, Carnival donated $30,000 to the  Emeril Lagasse Foundation   to support New Orleans’ education and culinary programs for youth. Lagasse led a tour of the ship’s main galley for a group of kids from the Belle Chasse Academy, a local school partner of Emeril's Culinary Garden & Teaching Kitchen, shortly after making the first cut of a special anniversary cake created by Carnival Liberty’s culinary team. “Even before joining the team, I knew well that Carnival has been a great partner to our incredible city. We’ve all seen and enjoyed the growing popularity of cruising from our port over the years, which continues to bring more people here to enjoy all the rich culture our city has to offer,” said Lagasse. “My restaurants, Emeril’s and Meril, are just a few blocks from the pier, and it’s also special getting to welcome a ship docking here for the first time. We’re proud Carnival Liberty and her great team are now calling New Orleans home.”             Carnival Liberty’s arrival maintains Carnival’s two-ship, year-round deployment strategy in New Orleans. The ship offers a variety of sailing options, with mostly week-long cruises visiting popular destinations in the  Bahamas ,  Mexico  and the  Caribbean .  Two unique 14-day  Panama Canal  cruises are also open for sale and next year, Carnival Liberty will sail several voyages visiting  Celebration Key , Carnival’s all-new, exclusive destination on the island of Grand Bahama. The ship shares its new home with  Carnival Valor , which also offers an array of four- to seven-day cruises. “We are thrilled to celebrate this monumental milestone with our valued partner, Carnival Cruise Line,” said Brandy D. Christian, President & CEO, Port of New Orleans and New Orleans Public Belt Railroad. “For 30 years, Carnival has shown an unwavering commitment to the New Orleans cruise market, and we are most grateful. Our cruise industry is thriving – and on track to exceed pre-pandemic numbers with the support of Carnival’s two year-round homeported vessels. We look forward to many more years of partnership and successes.”             Guests departing from New Orleans on Monday afternoon will sail on a six-day Western Caribbean cruise, visiting Costa Maya and Cozumel, Mexico as well as Belize City, Belize.             For additional information on  Carnival Cruise Line  and to book a cruise vacation, call  1-800-CARNIVAL , visit  www.carnival.com , or contact your favorite travel advisor or online travel site. # # # ABOUT CARNIVAL CRUISE LINE Carnival Cruise Line, part of Carnival Corporation & plc (NYSE/LSE: CCL; NYSE: CUK), is the first cruise line to sail over 100 million guests and is proud to be known as America's Cruise Line, for carrying more Americans and serving more U.S. homeports than any other. Since its founding in 1972, Carnival has continually revolutionized the cruise industry and popularized the cruise vacation as an affordable and fun travel option. Carnival operates from 14 U.S. and two Australian homeports as well as seasonally from Europe and employs more than 48,000 team members representing 120 nationalities. Carnival’s fleet of 27 ships reflects an exciting, continued period of growth with two new additional Excel-class ships scheduled to be delivered in 2027 and 2028. Carnival’s next new guest offering will be the all-new exclusive destination, Celebration Key, set to debut on Grand Bahama in summer 2025.   MEDIA CONTACT:   [email protected]

Carnival Liberty Repositions to New Orleans

  • May 16, 2024

Carnival Liberty

The Carnival Liberty recently arrived at its new homeport in New Orleans.

Repositioning from Port Canaveral, the cruise ship, which was built in 2005, is now offering a series of seven-night cruises departing from Louisiana.

Departing from New Orleans every Sunday, the Liberty is visiting ports in both the Eastern and Western Caribbean, as well as the Bahamas.

The program features three different week-long itineraries sailing to ports of call such as Cozumel, Costa Maya, Belize, Montego Bay, Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Mahogany Bay, Freeport and Nassau.

The Carnival Liberty is also scheduled to offer a special Carnival Journey from New Orleans in December 2024.

The 14-night itinerary explores the Panama Canal and the Southern Caribbean, with visits to Grand Cayman, Aruba, Curaçao, Cartagena, Colón, Puerto Limón and Cozumel.

Along with the Carnival Liberty, the Carnival Valor is set to continue sailing from New Orleans. After debuting in Louisiana in early 2019, the ship offers a series of four- and five-night cruises to Mexico and the Western Caribbean.

Extending through at least April 2026, the deployment includes itineraries visiting Cozumel, Costa Maya and Puerto Progreso.

Starting in 2025, the Carnival Liberty is also scheduled to add visits to Carnival’s new private destination on the island of Grand Bahama, Celebration Key.

Carnival Cruise Line recently completed 30 years of sailing from New Orleans. According to the company, nearly seven million guests have embarked since it began its service from the port in 1994 .

With its two-ship lineup, Carnival is currently the only ocean cruise line sailing from New Orleans on a year-round basis, the company added.

Previously sailing from New Orleans, the Carnival Glory repositioned to Port Canaveral as part of the same ship shuffle that brought the Liberty to Louisiana.

Following a drydock in Spain, the vessel kicked off a series of short cruises to the Bahamas departing from Carnival’s Central Florida homeport.

Viking River Cruises

Viking is no stranger to sailing Europe's rivers; the brand is synonymous with river cruising worldwide aboard its dozens of ships. However, Viking River Cruises is a newcomer to U.S. rivers, with its purpose-built ship: the 386-passenger Viking Mississippi. Looking to carve out its own niche in the American river cruising category, Viking claims it has the region's "first truly modern cruise ship" with its distinct Scandinavian design and expansive top sun deck with an infinity plunge pool.

Viking's mostly all-inclusive fares include a complimentary excursion in each port, destination lectures and performances, beer and wine at meals, free Wi-Fi, specialty coffees and teas, and more. The line offers five itineraries ranging in length from eight to 22 days along the Mighty Mississippi. Pre- and post-cruise extensions can be added to all voyages for an additional expense.

New Orleans & Southern Charms: Round-trip from New Orleans

Price: Starts at $3,999 per person

If you don't know which Viking Mississippi itinerary to choose, start here. A round-trip voyage from New Orleans is convenient for booking flights and offers an excellent opportunity to extend your stay in NOLA. Six guided tours are included across eight days, from the historic estates of Natchez to Vicksburg National Military Park. A stop in St. Francisville gives you the chance to marvel at some of the 140-plus buildings it has on the National Register of Historic Places.

If you extend your stay in New Orleans, plan to sample the local Creole cuisine and take in some of the city's nightly jazz entertainment. In the morning, grab a beignet and a steaming cup of chicory coffee au lait at the original Café du Monde in the French Market.

2024 dates: This itinerary is available on select dates in February, November and December.

Heart of the Delta: New Orleans to Memphis

Length: Nine days

Price: Starts at $4,299 per person

Similar to its round-trip New Orleans Southern Charms itinerary, the Heart of the Delta cruise begins in New Orleans and calls on the same five ports, before sailing through the Lower Mississippi and disembarking in Memphis. Enjoy scenic views of the serpentine river route – perhaps with expert commentary or a local cooking demonstration – and then take time to explore the birthplace of the Memphis blues, which is also a center of civil rights history.

2024 dates: In 2024, this cruise is available in February, March, April, May, June and November.

America's Great River: St. Paul to New Orleans

Price: Starts at $12,999 per person

This Viking voyage sails from St. Paul to New Orleans on a two-week trip that calls on 13 ports with one day of scenic sailing. This itinerary combines the best of Viking's other Mississippi sailings for an all-encompassing Midwestern and Southern experience with 12 guided tours.

Included in the fare is a tour of Graceland; a stroll through small-town Burlington, Iowa, to see Snake Alley, deemed the most crooked street in the world; and a visit to the National Eagle Center of Red Wing, among others. For an additional fee, hop on an airboat ride through the Atchafalaya Swamp in Baton Rouge or tour the Anheuser-Busch Brewery of St. Louis.

2024 dates: Viking has availability for this itinerary in July, September and October.

Bucket list on a budget: Travel New Orleans without breaking the bank

VIDEO: Take a bucket list trip to New Orleans and stay on budget

The Big Easy is a bucket list destination for fun-seekers. With live music and jazz echoing through the streets, delicious French and Creole cuisine -- serving everything from beignets and po' boy sandwiches to French 75 cocktails -- there's an abundance of must-do activities in New Orleans.

cruises with new orleans

But living it up in the Crescent City can get costly if you're not careful, so "Good Morning America" scoped out the best way to enjoy bayou country on a budget.

If you're pinching pennies, see all the ways you can still let the good times roll, below.

Getting there

Airfare prices to New Orleans, like most destinations, can vary depending on the time of year, but in the beginning of June for example, roundtrip fares from Chicago O'Hare International Airport can be found for under $145 on Spirit Airlines, and for $45 more -- around $189 -- American Airlines has similar flights that include a carry on item for no fee.

Where to stay

Look at hotel membership programs before you book your stay.

An IHG One Rewards account gets guests a slightly cheaper rate: A room at the Hotel Indigo, for instance, is priced at $129 per night for members, $7 less than the typical rate.

Travel expert Clint Henderson, managing editor at The Points Guy, told "GMA" that "among the perks you can potentially get just for being a member in a loyalty program are free Wi-Fi, late checkout and even room upgrades."

"In the case of IHG, specifically, you unlock member discounts by booking via their website as opposed to an online travel agent," he said.

Eat like a local

cruises with new orleans

There's no shortage of delicious New Orleans restaurant options from legendary chefs like Emeril Lagasse or Nina Compton, but if you're looking to save, check out specials and find some go-to spots that locals love.

At the famed, family-run Parkway Bakery, one of the oldest po' boy shops in the city and known for its fresh baked bread, visitors can enjoy an array of stuffed oversized sub-like sandwiches for as little as $7. And if you can agree on the fillings and toppings, sharing a full size po' boy like the classic flash-fried Louisiana wild-caught Gulf shrimp comes in at just $7.70 each for two people.

Plus, May through July is peak crawfish season, and local eateries like Clesi's Seafood Restaurant & Catering have an abundance of the freshwater crustacean for just $8.50 per pound. The restaurant offers weekly specials as well like $3 taco Tuesday and free fry basket Friday, and gives customers a complimentary order of french fries tossed in a house-made parmesan garlic butter with the purchase of a pitcher of beer.

It wouldn't be a visit to New Orleans without satisfying your sweet tooth with beignets. The renowned Cafe du Monde serves up the deep-fried pâte à choux pastry, which is doused in powdered sugar, in orders of three for just $3.85 -- but don't forget, it's cash only.

Getting around the city

Skip the cabs or rideshare apps and pick up a Jazzy Pass to use public transit for just $3 a day.

The card includes unlimited rides on the ferry, bus and street cars, providing a unique view of the city.

Listen to the music

cruises with new orleans

You'll never miss a beat in the jazz-filled French Quarter. Entertainment is free, but be sure to pack some small bills and tip your favorite artists as you enjoy the historic area.

The New Orleans Jazz Museum also hosts free afternoon concerts Tuesday through Friday.

Venture outside the city center

Look for activities, tours and other attractions from the local tourism board to book unique deals.

Plus, Groupon has offers on more than 40% off the Jean Lafitte Swamp Tour.
