Your experience

The sacred christian catacombs.

On a private AC bus, you'll visit the extensive Christian Catacombs, dug out of the ground some 2000 years ago. Follow your historian guide through the network of sacred tunnels associated with the first Christians in ancient Rome. Descend into the labyrinthian corridors carved into the soft volcanic rock as you discover intriguing iconography, fascinating frescoes, and breathtaking burial grounds.

Basilica of San Nicola in Carcere

Below the altar of the church, discover the Forum Holitorium. Nestled along the Tiber, this historic market bustled with commercial and religious activities in ancient Rome. Wander its streets, tracing the path of triumphal parades, and explore temples like the awe-inspiring Temple of Janus and the sacred Temple of Juno Sospita. Here, you can admire the resilience of ancient columns and stunning frescoes standing tall through fire and flood.

The Capuchin crypts

Head next to the Capuchin Museum: an attraction that houses Caravaggio’s painting of St. Francis and many artifacts from their history of creating altruistic projects around the world. Lined along the rear end of the museum is the unique Capuchin Crypts: the resting places of 4000 Capuchin Friars, whose bones were used in the European tradition of Momento Mori (decorative features to imbibe a sense of detachment from life!)

Rome Catacombs and Crypts Private Guided Tour

Written by: Elena local guide in Rome

Roman crypts and catacombs private tour

During this private guided tour you will have an opportunity to visit the Christian Catacombs and admire ancient frescoes and sculptures that exist from early Christian period

The term “catacombs” appeared from the Latin catatumbas “at the graves,” from cata -” among” + tumbas, accusative plural of tumba “tomb.” The Roman Catacombs are one of city’s wonders. Precisely, catacombs are underground Christian or Jewish burial places; some of them were discovered only in recent decades. Moreover, the Etruscans used to bury their dead in underground chambers. The original Roman custom was cremation, but from about the 2 nd century AD, inhumation became more fashionable. For Christians, the burial method was essential because they believed in bodily resurrection at the Second Coming. Moreover, among unusual catacombs is the Museum and Crypt of Capuchin Friars (Museo e Cripta dei Frati Cappuccini), where Capuchin monks were buried. It is located near the city center, on Via Veneto.

The Christian Catacombs are significant for the art history of Early Christian art because many frescoes and sculptures from before about 400 AD where found there

You may think the underground atmosphere may be frightening and dark, but it isn’t. There is the feeling of peace and colorful frescoes that surround you. Which catacomb to visit?

We invite you to visit one of the catacombs, which is the best according to your choice:

Catacomb of Priscilla

The Catacomb of Priscilla is named after the wife of Consul Manius Acilius Glabrio, who was killed on the orders of Domitian . There are walls and ceilings with decorations illustrating Biblical scenes.

Do you believe in ghosts? Let’s check, whether they exist or not 🙂
  • Ticket cost: 8 euro
  • Opening hours: from 8.30 am to afternoon; 2.30 pm to 5 pm
  • Closed on Mondays
  • How to get: From Termini station by bus 86, 92, or 310. From Piazza Venezia by bus 63 (Piazza Crati stop). The taxi price will be around 15 euros from the city center area. You can use our TAXI FARES CALCULATOR .

Catacombs of Saint Agnes

The Catacombs were built to conserve the remains of Saint Agnes of Rome. Her bones are now preserved in the church built over the catacomb. Moreover, the life story of Saint Agnes is impressive and breathtaking. Visit to these crypts definitely worth it.

  • Opening hours: from 9 am to afternoon, 4 pm to 6 pm
  • Closed on Sundays
  • How to get: bus 90, 60, or 36 on via Nomentana
  • Meeting point: S.Agnese/Annibaliano metro stop, near the entrance to McDonald’s. Here is the point on the map

Catacombs of Saint Clement

The Basilica of Saint Clement is a Roman Catholic minor basilica dedicated to Pope Clement I. We will discover a three-tiered complex of buildings with an underground world full of secrets and interesting facts.

  • Ticket cost: 10 euro
  • Opening hours: from 9 am to afternoon; from 3 pm to 5.30 pm
  • There is a mass at 9 am every Saturday, so visits only after an afternoon
  • How to get: from Termini station by bus 75, 714, or 16. Also, you can get to the basilica from the Colosseum metro stop and then walk 15 minutes on foot

Organizational details

  • Beginning time: 8.30-9 am or 3-4 pm, depending on the catacomb you choose
  • Tickets: we will buy tickets to the catacomb near the entrance
  • Dress code: covered arms and shoulders. The temperature inside is cool, and you should better take something warm
  • Price for a private tour: 150 euros for your company of up to 3 participants (+25 euro for any additional participant; 6 tourists is the max number)
  • Duration: around 1.5 hours
  • Meeting point: near the entrance to the catacombs. The most convenient way to get to any of them is by taxi , with an average price of 10-15 euros from Rome’s city center.

Author: Elena local guide in Rome

I've lived in Rome since the age of 10. The first impression about the Eternal City was incomparable and grandiose, so the decision about the future profession immediately came up in my mind – I decided to study in gymnasium at the faculty of tourism and continued my education at the faculty of archeology in Roma Tre Italian public University. The idea of becoming a tour guide became my firm intention after an internship under the supervision of Alberto Angelo – the most famous paleontologist, archeologist and TV anchor of Italy. Thanks to his professionalism, I realized the significance of history and today, I am happy to share my knowledge with anyone looking forward to discovering the secrets of Rome and Vatican. About me: I am huge fan of horseriding, spaghetti amatriciana, and beach days.

After meeting up with your local guide in Piazza Barberini in central Rome, your group will take the short journey by private vehicle to the site of the Capuchin Crypts—home to displays containing over 3,700 human skeletons. Next, you’ll travel to the vast underground tombs at the Catacombs Priscilla for an unforgettable night tour. Best of all, your guide will unlock the gates to the catacombs right before your eyes, letting you feel like a true VIP.

Rome Catacombs at Night Tour Description

Your 2.5-hour tour includes:

Guided tour of Capuchin Crypts

Guided tour of Priscilla Catacombs

A fun English-speaking guide

Maximum group size of 20 people

Private transportation between locations

Please note: Some of the sites on this small group tour are sacred, so both men and women must cover their knees and shoulders at all times. We know that Rome gets quite hot during the summertime, but it's always a great idea to bring a shawl/scarf/sweater with you to cover your knees and shoulders when necessary.

Housed beneath the Church of Santa Maria della Concezione Cappuccini are five chapels, each filled with the bones of Capuchin friars who were buried at a time when the Catholic Church permitted burial underneath church grounds. The Capuchin Crypts were not created with the intention of macabre art; the idea was to symbolize mortality and passage of life through the earth.

Without having to wait in line, you’ll visit all five chapels: Crypt of the Resurrection, Crypt of the Skulls, Crypt of the Pelvises, Crypt of the Leg Bones and Thigh Bones, and Crypt of the Three Skeletons. It’s a chilling and fascinating display to experience up close.

Transportation to Catacombs of Priscilla

After your eerie visit to the bone chapels, you’ll hop on a private vehicle for a 15-25 minute drive (depending on traffic) to our next destination, the Catacombs of Priscilla. No need to stress about getting from one destination to the next. Our team will arrange all of that.

The Priscilla Catacombs will be opened with an ancient key right before your eyes so you can explore with hardly any crowds like a VIP. Often known as the “Queen of Catacombs,” the Catacombs of Priscilla stretch for about 5 miles. The site not only served as a burial space almost 2,000 years ago, but also operated as a place of worship for Christians.

Your guide will escort you into three separate sections: Acilii zone, Greek Chapel, and Arenario. Inside, you’ll find biblical artistic inscriptions, such as Moses striking water from a rock, the Madonna and Child and the Sacrifice of Isaac. Finally, whether or not these catacombs actually contain the body of St. Priscilla is a subject of fierce debate.

Super interesting

Both parts of the tour were super interesting. We love ossuaries so I'm glad we got to see one, but the museum portion overall should be a bit longer in my opinion, as the audioguide tracks were a bit long and of course you'll want to listen to as much as you can to understand what you're seeing. The Priscilla catacombs were fantastic, and it was mostly thanks to Hermann's superb guiding and knowledge. Fiona did a great job filling us in with the context of the city and the sites we visited. I would recommend this tour if you're looking to spend a nice and informative afternoon in Rome.

Something different!

After days of touring various old towns in Italy, this tour was a welcome change. Fiona was very knowledgeable and also shared a little about life living in Rome. On this tour I learned some history that was not taught in school. I now want to do some research and learn more about the Capuchin practices and the challenges facing Christians before the 15th century.

Frequently Asked Questions

What to bring?

Wear comfortable shoes for this walking tour. In spring and autumn, we recommend bringing a light jacket.

What if I have concerns about my mobility on this tour?

This tour involves a moderate amount of walking and many old stone floors and stairways. If you have any doubts about your mobility, we suggest taking a Catacombs Private Tour so your needs can be better accommodated.

Which catacombs does this tour visit?

This tour usually visits the Priscilla Catacombs, but if there are any unexpected closures, your guide will take you to another nearby site.

Will we see bones?

Yes! This tour visits the Church of Santa Maria della Concezione which houses a 17th-century ossuary under it. There you will see the bones of around 4,000 Capuchin friars!

Why do I have to pay for my child who is under 6 years old?

Since this trip includes transportation, all passengers on the tour must be seated for safety and legal reasons. That means a young child takes up the same space as a youth or adult. For peace of mind, we can bring a car seat for children who need one, so please let us know in the comment box on the order confirmation page.

Is there a dress code to enter the religious sites on this tour?

We ask both men and women to cover knees and shoulders, otherwise you may be refused entry to religious sites and miss out on a portion of your tour. We understand the summers in Rome can be hot, so a great alternative is to bring a shawl/scarf/sweater with you. That way, you can cover your knees and shoulders when necessary.

Does this tour include hotel pickup?

No hotel pickup is included on this tour. You’ll meet your guide at the designated meeting point.

Where does this tour end?

After visiting the catacombs and crypts, your driver will return you to central Rome at Piazza Barberini where your tour started.

What if I want to see the catacombs during the day?

No problem! You can book onto our daytime option Rome Catacombs Tour .
