Best time to visit romania.

July and August are the busiest months for tourists all over Europe because the weather is at its warmest. May and June are some of the best months to visit Romania, followed by September and early October as the weather is usually fine and the sites are less crowded than during peak season. Spring and autumn are considered optimal times for birdwatching in the Danube Delta. Romania has harsh winters, with most tourists choosing to travel to the ski resorts. Snow lingers as late as mid-May, and the hiking season doesn't begin in earnest until June. The resorts along the Black Sea coast get busy in late June and stay packed until mid-August. It tends to rain more in March, April, October and November.

Geography and environment

Bordered by   Bulgaria ,   Serbia ,   Ukraine ,   Hungary   and   Moldova , Romania also has a stretch of coastline along the Black Sea. Much of Romania's terrain is mountainous with the Carpathian Mountains and Transylvanian Alps occupying parts of the central and northern regions. Home to a large number of glacial and karstic lakes, rivers and lagoons, Romania's splendid scenery will take many by surprise. Considerable amounts of arable land, orchards, vineyards, rural pastures and farmland are significant features of Romania's countryside.

Top 5 Classic Castles of Romania

1. bran castle.

Possibly Romania's best known castle, Transylvania's Bran Castle is linked to the legend of Dracula, although somewhat tenuously. Regardless, tourists flock in to see the heritage art, historic treasures and secret passages that all good castles are made of. A short trip from Brasov, this interesting attraction should be high on every traveler's list.

2. Hunyad Castle

Watch towers? Check. Drawbridge? Check. Dark History? Check. Hunyad Castle has all the classic hallmarks of a typical European castle. Once the prison of notorious Vlad the Impaler, Hunyad Castle's unique Gothic-Renaissance style is a result of extensive restoration after years of neglect.

3. Fagaras Castle

This ancient fortress and castle may lack the opulence of others, but is worthy of admiration for its enduring powers. Still surrounded by the moat which protected it for centuries, Fagaras Castle is a wonderful example of effective fortification - with enormous walls and towers built to withstand war and invasion.

4. Peles Castle

Nestled within the Carpathian Mountains, this gorgeous castle straight out of a fairytale is the perfect example of palatial bliss. With 30 bathrooms, an impressive collection of fine art, an extensive armor collection, manicured gardens, marble fireplaces and imposing statues, Peles Castle is one of Romania's grandest.

5. Pelisor Castle

Located within the Peles Castle complex, this castle is most famous for its decadent room made of gilded gold. Featuring Art Nouveau-style furnishings and art, plush interiors and an oak paneled lobby, Pelisor Castle certainly works its old-world charm.

Expert travel storyteller Jordan Adkins, founder of InspiredByMaps.com, brings a decade of adventures across 101 countries and 450+ UNESCO sites into rich, off-the-beaten-path narratives, melding ecological expertise with genuine, seasoned travel insights. His full bio can be found here.

Romania’s deep and dark secrets are something almost every wandering soul has the desire to uncover and the process of doing so can reveal even more enchanting enigmas than you knew of before discovering them.

The Land of Dracula is known for its myths, legends, intricate stories, and one-of-a-kind natural landscapes and medieval towns – thus making it a perfect place to explore with the best Romania tours.

Located in Southeast Europe west of Ukraine, Romania is a nation like no other. With a population of 19.12 million, the country is considered one of the most populous countries in Eastern Europe. Romania was taken over by the Soviet Union in 1944 and joined the USSR just four years later.

After 40 years as a state of the USSR, Romania became independent when the USSR was abolished in 1989. The country became a part of the European Union in 2007 and has had a stable economy since. Due to its resilience and strength, the country can be seen as one of the strongest countries in Europe.

Romania today can be seen as a perfect place to explore and uncover the many dark secrets it holds. Romania is known as the home of Dracula. Although commonly labeled as a myth, Dracula or Vlad ll was once a real person known as the Prince of Walachia from 1456 – 1462.

He was notorious for being cruel to his enemies and those who defied him. Born and raised in now what’s known as the famous Transylvania and is the inspiration for what we consider to be Dracula today. Dracula is what draws so many people to visit Romania, to begin with – though there are also many other famous films set in Romania that have lured in adventurous travelers like yourself over the year. Let’s look at the top places to visit while you’re in Romania !

The capital of Romania and the hub of the country, Bucharest is a hustling and bustling capital that you need to visit on your trip to Romania. Bucharest is situated right in the center of the Romanian plains and rests in the southern part of the country. With tons to see and do, Bucharest can be a perfect place to start your adventure.

Bucharest originally got its name in 1459 when a written document by Walachia’s king Vladd was founded and the city at that time was named, Bucuresti. Later on the name Bucharest. Bucharest soon became the country’s capital and the most important and powerful city in the country following both the first and second world Wars.

When in Bucharest, take the time to completely explore the city. Take a trip to the Palace of Parliament. Formerly a Communist Palace, the palace had turned into what is now known as parliament when the soviet union was abolished in 1989.

Take a stroll through some of the parks or gardens or perhaps take some time to visit the Arcul De Triumf. A war memorial archway made completely out of granite. You will be left speechless by the unique architecture you’ll find in Romania. It’s like communism meets Western European and will be the best background for your socials.

Transylvania

Transylvania is one of the most popular tourist sites and regions of Romania. Not far from Bucharest and just to the east of the Carpathian mountains, visiting Transylvania will give you a chance to see some of the most popular myths and legends from the country.

In the second century, Transylvania became part of the province of Dacia and became the kingdom of Dacia. The kingdom was then taken over in the 9th century when the Hungarians seized the region.

Soon after, Vlad ll became the king and one of the most well-known historical figures of Romania. Like his father, Vlad enrolled in the Order of the Dragon which was an organization created to defend Christian Europe against the ottoman empire.

Vlad was given the name Dracula which means “Son of Dracul” in Latin. “Dracul” means “The Devil” in Romanian. Transylvania can also be known as Transilvania in Romanian and It is one of the most historic places in eastern Europe.

Just 4 hours away from Bucharest, Transylvania is studded in historical sites and is the most famous place in Romania. Tourists flock from all over just to see the castle in person. Visiting can help educate you on the vast history of Romania and it can quickly become of the most memorable moments of your life.

Now you may be asking yourself why is it so important to take an organized tour of Romania. Romania is such a diverse country with so much to see and do, it can be hard to pinpoint exactly what you want to do and how you want to do it in the time you spend there.

It can also be confusing and tedious for those who are not as experienced in planning or booking travel. That’s why it’s always recommended to book an official tour to guide you through the country and take you to some of the best cultural sites.

So, with this in mind, and much as we have done for the best Montenegro tours and best Georgia tours , here we are going to be talking about one of the best Romania tours (and their operators), so you can be inspired – and then choose with confidence.

Welcome to Romania

Breakfast: included on all days except the first day

At 9:00 AM, our guide will come to pick you up from your Bucharest hotel.

Start your travel to Romania with a road ride from Bucharest to Curtea de Arges , Wallachia's historical capital and one of Romania's most culturally rich cities. Constructed between 1512 and 1517, the Curtea de Arges Monastery is the site of your visit. One of the most well-known stories from Romania, the legend of Manole, is what made the monastery famous and had a lasting impact on its people: "You can't create something everlasting without sacrifice."

Currently, the monastery stands as one of Romania's most significant historical sites and serves as the last resting place for several of Romania's Royal Family members.

Following that, you'll embark on one of the world's most breathtaking routes—the Transfagarasan Highway . The Transfagarasan travels through the Southern Carpathians, passing via the 2042-meter-tall Fagaras Mountains, Romania's tallest mountains. This is the ideal chance to capture some breathtaking pictures of the surroundings.

*Note that Transfagarasan Highway is only open between June and November.

Lunch: At your expense

The mediaeval city of Sibiu , which has a rich history spanning more than 900 years, is the final stop of the day. Sibiu is a fantastic place to visit all year round, but in the summer it hosts the International Theatre Festival, and in the winter it has one of Romania's most spectacular Christmas markets.

Dinner: At your expense

Evening: You are free to spend the remainder of the evening as you please.

Overnight in Sibiu

A spectacular tour of Romania from Sibiu to Cluj-Napoca

Breakfast: At the hotel

Your second day of travel to Romania will begin at 09:00, with your first stop being Hunedoara, where you will be given a visit to the very charming Corvin Castle . One of the biggest castles in Romania, it is also known as Hunyad Castle for its principal occupant, John Hunyadi.

The town of Alba Iulia , which hosted one of the most significant occasions in Romanian history—the Union of Transylvania with Romania—will be our next stop. We will go to Alba Carolina Fortress, which was constructed by around 20,000 labourers in the Vauban architectural style between 1715 and 1738.

Lunch: At your expense

As you head out of Alba Iulia, we'll arrive at Turda, a tiny village that, according to Business Insider , is home to one of the world's greatest underground attractions. The 13-story Turda Salt Mine is a magnificent theme park featuring a mini golf course, tennis courts, a Ferris wheel, and a lake.

By the end of the day, we will arrive at Cluj-Napoca, the capital of Transylvania and home to one of Romania's biggest student populations. You'll have free time to explore the neighbourhood cafes and bohemian restaurants close to the hotel after enjoying a walking tour of the Old City Centre.

Evening: The rest of the evening is yours to spend however you wish. You can find ideas for activities by visiting our blog .

Overnight in Cluj-Napoca

Enjoy the traditions of Romania (from Cluj-Napoca to Voronet)

Today, you are travelling east across the Carpathians to the Bucovina region. At 09:00, you will check out of the hotel and head to Bistrita, a city situated in the foothills of the mountains. Jonathan Harker , the fictional character created by Bram Stoker, lived here before his encounter with Count Dracula.

Following a brief sightseeing trip to Bistrita, you will leave Transylvania and travel to Bucovina, the sacred region of Romania. One of the eight UNESCO Painted Monasteries, the Voronet Monastery , will be your first glimpse of Bucovina. Constructed in 1488, the monastery is renowned for its distinct blue hue, called “Blue of Voronet”.

You will arrive at the hotel in the evening and savour a traditional Romanian meal.

Dinner: At the hotel

Overnight in Voronet

Visit Romania and its renowned monasteries (Voronet – Moldovita – Sucevita – Iasi)

We will depart at the same time, 9:00, and travel north to reach the day's first landmark. One of the oldest monastic villages with a noteworthy history is Moldovita Monastery. Constructed between 1532 and 1537, the Monastery was inducted into the UNESCO World Heritage Centre in 1993.

We should proceed to Sucevita Monastery as our second destination. Built in 1585, the legend holds that a woman used only an ox cart to transport all the materials required for its construction, as penance for her sins.

Many consider the Painted Monasteries of Bucovina genuine masterpieces of Byzantine art. Their exquisite frescoes portray a variety of biblical subjects in addition to the biographies of other significant religious luminaries. They are unlike anything else in the world, embellished with exquisite embellishments and seamlessly integrating with the surroundings.

The second-largest city in Romania and the birthplace of numerous well-known Romanian personalities, Iasi , will be arrived at in the evening.

Overnight in Iasi

Travel to Romania’s heart (Iasi - Targu Neamt - Piatra Neamt)

Before departing for Piatra Neamt at 09:00 AM, we will take a tour of Iasi, beginning at the Palace of Culture . Constructed in the Neo-Gothic architectural style between 1906 and 1925, the Palace now houses four of the largest museums in the city. This Palace should be on your "must-see" list if you have the chance to visit Romania.

We will go to the Metropolitan Cathedral, one of Iasi's most well-known churches and the location of the city's patron saint's relics. Early in 1833, the White Church and Stratenia Church, two ancient churches, were demolished to make room for the present Cathedral.

Due to several circumstances, including inclement weather and unfavourable topography, the Cathedral suffered significant degradation over time. However, the restoration effort is almost complete, and visitors from all over the world can now enjoy its breathtaking splendour. The National Theatre, the country's first national theatre, will be your last destination in Iasi.

After leaving Iasi, we will arrive at Targu Neamt to see the Neamt Citadel, which was constructed during Peter I's rule (1375–1391). In the evening, we will arrive at Piatra Neamt for a walking tour of the remaining old town.

P.S. Piatra Neamt's old town, with its cobblestone paths leading past picturesque cafes and buildings dating back centuries, still carries whispers of its mediaeval past, so make sure you make the most of your experience there.

Evening: The rest of the evening is yours to spend however you wish.

Overnight in Piatra Neamt

Transylvanian Treasures Trail (Piatra Neamt – Bicaz – Corund – Biertan – Sighisoara)

The sixth day will see us departing for Transylvania, travelling through the stunning Bicaz Gorges to arrive at your first landmark of the day—a lake known for its peculiar colour. In 1837, a sequence of intense storms split Mt. Ucigasu (Killer), causing a portion of the mountain to fall and obstruct multiple streams, forming the Red Lake. The lake's water has a slight red tint due to the iron-rich river sediments, therefore the name Red Lake .

Our next destination will be Corund, one of Transylvania's principal pottery hubs. In addition to pottery, the people in the area work in woodworking and trading, and they get their clay from a stream nearby.

Next, we are scheduled to land in Biertan, one of the well-known UNESCO Villages with Fortified Churches in Transylvania. The excellent soil here was ideal for producing wine, which attracted the first Saxon colonists in the 13th century.

Our final stop of the day is in Sighisoara, Europe's last inhabited citadel. Because of its distinctive qualities, Sighisoara—which was likewise constructed in the 12th century by Saxon colonists—was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Centre.

Sighisoara's mediaeval charm becomes enchanted when nightfall settles over the city. Its imposing walls act as historical keepers, and its enchanted architecture takes you back to a past time. Take in the elaborately decorated buildings, which are testaments to the skill of previous generations. Explore this enduring citadel and uncover new tales woven within its walls at every turn. This experience will truly complete your travel to Romania .

Evening: You are free to spend the rest of your evening as you please.

Overnight in Sighisoara

Explore the wonders of Sighisoara, Viscri and Brasov

Breakfast: At the hotel

On the seventh day of your travel to Romania , you will learn more about the people and region of Transylvania. We will spend the morning exploring Sighisoara , a city where every structure has a fascinating history. As you approach the Sighisoara Citadel, you will pass through the main gate and arrive at the Clock Tower, which houses the History Museum of Sighisoara and is a true representation of mediaeval life. In addition to having a torture cell in its basement, the Clock Tower is exquisitely ornamented with several sculpted details and has a clock on each side.

Our next destination will be Viscri, a village whose simplicity and the manner its residents upheld their customs won Prince Charles over. It is here that you will meet the women who are known for their culinary prowess throughout the area. One of the villages in Transylvania with fortified churches is Viscri; you will see the quaint Viscri Church before departing.

Following Viscri, we'll head on further and do a quick walking tour of Brasov, one of the most picturesque cities in the heart of Romania when you get there.

Overnight in Brasov

A day dedicated to visiting Brasov – Bran – Sinaia – Bucuresti

The adventure begins with a city tour of Brasov , with a stop at Council Square, a well-known location for its international marketplaces. The Black Church, Brasov's principal Gothic structure and the largest Lutheran house of worship in the area will also be on the itinerary.

Located just outside Brasov, a charming little village named Bran awaits. Any traveller to the area should make time to view the majestic castle located in this charming town. Bran is about a 30-minute drive from Brasov and is highly recommended! Due in large part to Bram Stoker's Dracula, Bran Castle , which has a history spanning more than six centuries, gained notoriety as Dracula's Castle. You will learn about Vlad the Impaler's past as well as the relationship between Vlad Tepes and Dracula from Bram Stoker here.

In the afternoon, we will explore the first fully electrified castle in Europe in Sinaia, which is another must-see Romanian attraction. With 160 rooms and more than 30 bathrooms, Peles Castle's ultimate layout occupies 3200 square metres. In addition to being home to one of the greatest painting collections in Europe, the castle is renowned for its enormous collection of more than 4,000 European and Oriental weapons.

Evening: The evening is yours to spend however you wish.

Overnight in Bucharest

Visit Romania’s capital

Our tour guide will pick you up for a city tour of Bucharest at 9:00 AM on the final day of your Best of Romania Tour. The cultures of Eastern and Western Europe harmoniously coexist in our capital. Beyond this odd combination, the impact of the communist rule is definitely palpable.

The Palace of the Parliament, the most notable structure in the city and a remnant of the communist era, is where our day trip through Bucharest starts. Alternatively referred to as the House of the People, this magnificent structure broke into the Guinness World Records as the world's second-largest building , right behind the Pentagon. Our guide will explain to you the grim intricacies that made the creation of the enormous marble rooms possible.

A sightseeing trip to Bucharest's Old Town, which is home to several historical landmarks, architectural treasures, and notable structures, will round up your day in the city. Reviews of Small Group tours to Romania

We had a great time exploring Romania over 11 days, by using the Classic Romania tour by Rolandia and building some extra days and sights into the plan at the end. We were very lucky to have Traian as our guide and excellent driver, and his knowledge and patience made our whole experience very special. Hotels were 4* and the cities were exceptionally beautiful, particularly around Sibiu and Cluj. The views of snow capped mountains in a clear blue sky were amazing for April and we had no rain at all. We loved the horse and cart ride, traditional lunch and fun dinner which were included. At the end we chose to stay for extra time in Brasov to see the Bear Sanctuary, then climb the mountain (by the cable car) before catching the train back to Bucharest the next day. We also included an afternoon at the huge Therme spa next to the airport before flying home. A great holiday and we were very impressed at the price and quality of our trip. Thank you to all at Rolandia.
This was a fabulous tour! Interesting itinerary, spectacular countryside, lovely walks, tasty local food and drink, and a great guide in Bogdan.
