The 2012-built MS Disney Fantasy cruise ship is Walt Disney 's second (Dream-class) liner with sistership Disney Dream (2010).

The vessel (IMO number 9445590) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 311058700) and registered in Nassau .

History - construction and ownership

DCL-Disney Cruise Line is a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company (shipowner). The company was incorporated in 1996 as "Magical Cruise Company Ltd". Walt Disney also owns the Bahamian private island Castaway Cay (exclusive port of call - for Disney ships only) and an exclusive Cruise Terminal at Port Canaveral (Orlando Florida) . Disney cruises are marketed as "family vacations" and feature unique and exclusive activities, such as costumed Disney Characters, adults-only deck areas, dedicated facilities for teens, kids and infants-toddlers, signature (trademarked) shipboard facilities and activities, themed live entertainment.

The 4000-passenger ship Disney Fantasy is no exception with its primary market being families with small children (especially with kids younger than 8) - the major revenue provider for the unique Walt Disney company. MS Disney Fantasy is almost 50% larger, 2-deck taller and with 44% bigger passenger capacity than the older fleet mates Magic and Wonder . The ship design is inspired by traditional 1920s ocean liners. The vessel features a navy blue hull, 2 bright red funnels, elegant Art Deco decorations and some of the most innovative technologies and fun ideas at sea, including:

• 22 pieces of "Enchanted Art" adorning the walls of hallways - paintings and pictures that are actually framed LCD screens with a technology to recognize guests present and proceeding with one of several animations;
• wave phones in every stateroom (used to call or text other guests) and effectively replacing the old onboard beeper system (now the counselors' messages come directly to the parents' phones);
• the Magical Portholes on the walls of all Disney Fantasy Inside cabins (LED screens showing a real-time view of the ship).

The CLIENTELE consists almost entirely of North American travelers (the USA and Canada). The new Disney Lines approach to teens and young couples (by age-related activities and limited access onboard venues) adds a really strong appeal for multi-generational cruisers.

The DRESS CODE is similar to that of the Disney luxury resorts - day casual and evening resort casual (men - jackets (no ties) and pants, women - summer dresses). All Disney Fantasy sailings include one pirate and one semi-formal night. On 3-day Disney Fantasy cruises, one night is casual, 4-day sailings are with 2 casual evenings and on 5-day voyages 3 nights are casual.

Disney Fantasy TIPS (totaling the US $12 PP per day) are given to waiters (including the assistant waiters) and to cabin attendants. Additionally, a 15% gratuity on all drinks is automatically charged to guests' shipboard accounts.

Decks and Cabins

Most Disney Fantasy staterooms (1250 total, in 28 grades) are 205-255-ft2 Balconies. The ship has 21 Suites, 887 Balcony, 199 Oceanview and 150 Inside cabins. The largest accommodations are the Concierge Royal Suites (900 ft2 / 84 m2 plus 885 ft2 / 82 m2 terrace).

Disney Fantasy ship cabins are very well planned and equipped. Like on all Disney ships, Disney Fantasy staterooms are some of the industry's largest standard cabins, most of them designed to easily accommodate four passengers. Some of the best Disney cabins features are the ample closet space, the normal-sized living space and the split bathrooms (1 room with shower-bathtub-sink and a separate toilet and sink). Beds on Fantasy are raised to allow storing 2 medium-sized suitcases underneath, staterooms also got 2 vanities, a 22-inches smart HDTV, an iPod docking station and 2 rechargeable "Wave Phones" to be used ship-wide. The Disney Fantasy Inside cabin has a most innovative feature (and the industry's first, for that matter) - the Magical Portholes, which are LCD screens (above the beds) in the shape of portholes, projecting a real-time view outside the ship (provided by cameras). Veranda cabins feature 2 chairs and a small table on the balcony.

Concierge Suites and Concierge Family Cabins (Deck 11-12) are new for the line, offering direct access to the ship's concierge facilities (1 small lounge, a private sun deck area with chairs, free food and drinks). Most of the 1-bedroom suites are with connecting doors (1 queen bed, a sitting area with a double convertible sofa, 1 pull-down bed in the living rooms, a walk-in closet, 2 bathrooms (one with a hot-tub).

The largest Disney Fantasy stateroom, the Royal Suite, adds to all previously mentioned a living room, a wet bar, a kitchenette, media library and a Jacuzzi on the balcony.

The boat has 14 decks , of which 9 are with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

The Disney Fantasy three themed main restaurants are called "Animator's Palate", "Enchanted Garden" and "Royal Palace". There are 2 adults-only specialty restaurants - "Remy" (named after the "Ratatouille" movie star, French cuisine) and "Palo" (Italian cuisine) as alternative dining options. The line's Rotational Dining system allows you to rotate to each of the three main restaurants each night while your servers follow you. The Animator's Palate has screens showing animated Disney characters and themes from "Finding Nemo" movie. The Enchanted Garden is a Versailles-inspired room, featuring lighting effects, transforming day into night. The Royal Palace is princesses-themed with numerous portraits of "Cinderella" and the "Sleeping Beauty" movie characters (even the bread baskets are shaped as the Cinderella's coach). The food quality is very good, the service staff is amicable and timely.

The Remy specialty restaurant is a classy place to be on any special occasion, offering a marvelous French menu and charging serious prices - a service fee of $75 PP (reservations are required, along with the formal dress code), drinks and wine are additional. The Palo restaurant is an Italian (Mediterranean) eatery with $20 cover PP (serves dinner and on selected days - Champagne brunch). Superb fish and seafood entrees, a cold buffet (meats, cheese, shrimp, salads and desserts) and several hot made-to-order items. The "Cabanas" casual dining complex on Deck 11 has several food and drink stations for hot and cold buffet items (including made-to-order omelets and sandwiches). The "Flo's Cafe" offers burgers, chicken fingers, wraps, pizza, salads.

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

The Disney Fantasy kids cruise fun clubs are the main reason for the line's high loyalty passengers ratio. Besides all the Disney characters and most innovative technologies and fun attractions on ships, the Disney children counselors are a pretty big reason many families to repeat their visits. Always smiling and friendly, they are hugely experienced, all college-educated, attentive and downright. The Oceaneer's "Club" and "Lab" facilities (ages 3-10) are connected, thus doubling the fun space. The "Oceaneer's Club" features the "Andy's Room" (with oversized Disney characters for kids to climb on) and the "Laugh Floor" (with its "laugh-o-meter" and Mike and Sully of "Monsters Inc"). The "Oceaneer's Lab" is maritime-themed, featuring an Animator's Studio and a small Sound Studio. The new Disney approach allows all kids ages 3-10 to access the same clubs with separate rooms and age-related activities.

The Fantasy ship children club is called "Edge" (ages 11-13) properly secluded on Deck 13 in the funnel. Best attractions here are the 18 ft (5,5 m) tall LCD wall, the video karaoke, and numerous interconnected PCs. The teen-only "Vibe" club (ages 14-17) is of 9000 ft2 (836 m2), with a fountain bar and its own sun deck and pools.

Public spaces are decorated in deep blue and red, with numerous "Mickeys" just about everywhere (cabin, artwork, dinnerware, railings). One of the ship's most memorable places is the 3-deck high Atrium lobby with its golden hue, the wide royalty-style winding staircase, and the Donald Duck bronze statue. The Fantasy Atrium is a hub area connecting restaurants, theaters, and shops. You may check emails in the Internet cafe, but there's also a Wi-Fi coverage throughout the ship. Like all Disney ships, Fantasy has no casino.

• Fun activities on board

All Disney stage shows feature intricate sets and Disney themed captivating performances, and the big place for grand entertainment is the Disney Theater with goldies like the "Golden Mickeys" and "Villains Tonight", new amazing stage productions, like the "Disney's Believe" (directed by Gordon Greenberg) and all the best Disney movies in 3D. The themed Disney characters onboard have always been the greatest sensation of all, and there are countless opportunities to meet and greet Mickey and company around the ship - in contrast to Disneyland, here they all are accessible and will always stop for a hug and a photo with you. Another big success is the "Pirates in the Caribbean" kids party divided into two programs - the sing-along called "Mickey's Pirates in the Caribbean" followed by the "Club Pirate" (with many special effects) and great Disney fireworks between the shows.

• SPA and FITNESS, pools, waterslide, technology

The "Senses" Spa & Salon offers all the usual treatments (haircuts, manicures) and more exotic choices (hot-stone massages, mud baths). The "Chill" is a teen-only Spa within the facility. The Fitness Center along with the usual equipment offers at additional fee Yoga and Pilates classes. The Sports Deck has a small sports court, a mini-golf course, Ping-Pong tables, a walking/jogging track.

The pool deck has a large area for family fun water activities, featuring 2 hot tubs and 2 kids pools - "Donald's" (5 ft deep) and "Mickey's" (with a spiral slide). A big attraction here is the big LED screen mounted on the funnel. There's a toddler splash area (Nemo themed) located in the center on Deck 11 with huge glass panes for parents to monitor their kids.

The AquaDuck waterslide. The ever first water-coaster at sea is located atop the ship, featuring a 765 ft (233 m) long 4-decks high transparent tube, reaching the incredible 150 ft (46 m) above the ocean (there's a 42 inches (107 cm) height requirement). The "Nemo's Reef" is a small kids waterpark. And while speaking of water and pools - the adults only "Quiet Cove" pool area is a great place to hide from all the little angels and devils around the ship.

The Walt Disney ship Fantasy is the company's fourth (currently newest) liner, with sistership Disney Dream . Each vessel is 40% larger in size than the 2 older Disney ships Magic and Wonder . While its capacity (at double occupancy) is 2500, Fantasy can accommodate up to 4000 passengers at full/max occupancy (all berths).

The vessel (Mayer Neptun yard/hull number 688) is powered by MAN B&W marine diesel engines (3x 12-cyl, 2x 14-cyl) plus diesel generators (3x 14,4 MW, 2x 16,8 MW) with total power output 76,8 MW. The propulsion system is electric (based on two converteam propulsion motors) with total power output 26 MW, plus two FPPs (5-blade Fixed-Pitch Propellers/inward-turning).

The vessel was ordered on February 22, 2007. Ship design was announced on Oct 29, 2009, and the first steel cut was in March 2009. The vessel's construction started with the keel-laying ceremony held on February 11, 2011. The launch (float-out from drydock) was on January 8, 2012, and the ship was officially delivered to The Walt Disney Company on February 9, 2012 (at Port Bremerhaven ).

The inaugural call at Port NYC New York (first arrival in the USA) was on February 28, 2012. The liner was christened in NYC on March 1st (2012) by Godmother Mariah Carey (1970-born US singer, actress, record producer, entrepreneur). The hull's stern character is the Flying Elephant Dumbo.

The Disney ship's namesakes are Carnival Fantasy (1990-built) and the cruise ferries Color Fantasy (2004) and Moby Fantasy (2023).

Fantasy vs Magic (ships comparison, new features)

"Bibbiti Bobbiti Boutique" (the 1st at sea, similar to those at all Disney land parks where girls transform into princesses). The ship-Boutique is also transformed into a Pirates League (during the Caribbean Pirates-themed night party) where kids get transformed into pirates. Aqualab is another feature (was, because now they added it to the Magic during the 2013 refurbishment). The nightclub "districts" area ("Europa") transforms into several different "districts" representing famous European cities & countries. Among those - "Tube" (London, UK), "Ooh La La" (France), "O'Gill's Pub" (Ireland), "La Piazza" (Italy). "Satellite Falls" is the Fantasy's adults-only deck. The "Animator's Palate" dining room's dinner show is themed "Sorcerer Mickey's "Animation Magic". Guests may draw their own characters to be presented by Mickey the Sorcerer Mouse.

One of the most visited attractions on MS Disney Fantasy is the AquaDuck. This water park with a slide will throw you into the swimming pool after a craziest spin in a long tube over the very ocean. Fantasy was also the debut for the "Muppets at Sea" show. Muppets participate in an interactive game full of mysterious clues for the passengers.

The vessel's last drydock (for regularly scheduled maintenance works) was in 2020 (at Damen Shiprepair Yard in Brest France ).

The arrival of the Disney Fantasy in 2012 marked what many saw (at the time) as the “completion” of Disney’s fleet, bringing the total number of ships to four. Disney Magic and Disney Wonder had launched more than a decade earlier in the late 1990s, followed by the Disney Dream in 2011.

While the launch of the Dream one year earlier had consumed some of the pent-up demand for a new Disney Cruise ship, the Fantasy’s arrival was still a source of excitement for avid cruisers. Like the Dream, Imagineers planning the Fantasy were able to take advantage of all the experience and technological advances they’d perfected since the launch of the first ships. Innovations such as the AquaDuck water coaster and an onboard mystery game featuring interactive artwork, the Fantasy offers lots to keep its Guests occupied.

As you arrive at the port and approach the Disney Fantasy, you might notice Dumbo and Timothy on the ship’s stern. Dumbo’s 7-foot ear span and 2,300 weight — contrasted against their apparent size compared to the rest of the ship — help drive home the true size of this amazing floating city.

Inside, the three-decks-tall grand atrium lobby of the ship pays homage to the golden age of steamliner travel. A statue of Minnie Mouse — in period-appropriate garb and with luggage in tow — greets passengers embarking on their seafaring adventure.

This central hub of activity is decorated in an Art Nouveau motif, with designs reminiscent of peacock feathers repeated throughout.

From the atrium, take gleaming glass elevators to your stateroom or to any of the restaurants, theatres, pools, and activities scattered about the ship’s 14 passenger decks.

How Does Disney Fantasy Compare to Other Disney Cruise Ships?

The Disney Fantasy is a sister ship to the Disney Dream ; the two ships, which launched within roughly a year of one another, are generally the same in terms of construction. That said, some similar areas on each ship are themed slightly differently from one another — the nightclub district, for example, offers entirely different venues on each ship. The Fantasy (and Dream) are significantly larger than the two original ships ( Disney Magic and Disney Wonder ) but remain slightly smaller than the Disney Wish .

The Disney Fantasy is one of the “mid-sized” ships in the Disney Cruise fleet, at least based on what we now about the remaining Disney Cruise ships currently being built . It is larger than the classic ships, but will be well below the gargantuan size of the ship Disney is planning to launch in Singapore in 2025.

Disney Fantasy is one of only two ships in the fleet to offer the AquaDuck water coaster, the Remy adult-exclusive fine dining restaurant, and virtual portholes (with live camera views of the outside) for its inside staterooms.

Should I Pick the Fantasy or a Smaller/Larger Ship?

Ship size is usually a matter of personal preference depending on how importantly you rank the various pros and cons.

Smaller ships such as the Magic and Wonder are generally easier to navigate on foot – indeed, you’re just a short walk away from the restaurants or virtually anything else onboard. My wife and I tend to prefer the smaller ships for this very reason — but I can honestly say we’ve never found the difference compelling enough to steer us toward solely booking the smaller ships. Interestingly enough, Katie and I have sailed onboard the larger ships more than the smaller ones, even though we prefer the smaller ones.

We at MagicGuides also tend to recommend smaller ships for first-time cruisers as they might feel a bit less overwhelming — but again, it’s not a major consideration. My first Disney Cruise (and my first cruise ever, for that matter) was on the Disney Fantasy’s sister ship the Disney Dream; I never felt overwhelmed during my maiden voyage and you likely won’t either.

On the other hand, some repeat cruisers love larger ships such as the Disney Fantasy because the larger size is simply just a bit more impressive and immersive. There’s no doubt that the larger size fully envelops you in the action. That first glimpse of the ship in port as you arrive for your cruise — and its looming presence at every port along the way, almost become a point of pride for cruisers.

Larger ships such as the Fantasy are at a disadvantage in smaller ports where they might simply not fit, but this usually is not a concern. Disney wisely plans its itineraries to avoid this issue wherever possible, though some ports are so small that virtually every cruise ship has to rely on tsmaller boats to ferry you to shore (known as tendering ).

A bigger ship means more passengers, so onboard venues are larger as a result. Luckily, the larger restaurants, theaters, and pools do a great job of handling the additional passengers so it rarely feels crowded. Those larger venues also give you more options; you can pick a lower or upper balcony seat at a movie theatre, for example, or you might simply have more shops/lounges to choose from. But don’t worry that it’s too big — the Imagineers who designed the ship pulled out their bag of design tricks such as forced perspective, which means you can still find cozy spots onboard that almost make it feel like you have the ship to yourself. Sailing during slower times can also help.

Disney Fantasy Staterooms

Choosing your own private room onboard the ship is a major part of planning your Disney Cruise. Your stateroom (AKA your passenger cabin) serves as your hotel room at sea. It’s where you’ll spend a decent portion of your waking hours — and where you’ll sleep each night.

The Disney Fantasy boasts 1,250 staterooms, most of which offer outside views through a porthole window or a private verandah (balcony). There are four primary types of staterooms on the ship; each of those four types is further divided into multiple categories and subcategories. Your choice of stateroom is one of the biggest factors in the how much a Disney Cruise costs , because the per-person cost can increase depending on the stateroom category.

Here is a brief list of the room types offered onboard. They’re listed here generally from least expensive to most expensive, though there may be some price overlap. Inside Staterooms on Disney Fantasy

Inside Staterooms are the smallest Guest rooms on the ship, but are still larger than those found on some other cruise lines. Luckily they’re wisely designed to offer plenty of room for everyone and their luggage.

These staterooms have no porthole window and no balcony, but on the Disney Fantasy they do feature something called a “magical porthole.” That’s a circular video screen which provides live video from the outside, along with occasional character sightings.

Inside staterooms are offered in standard and deluxe variants, with standard being the smaller of the two. The standard version is also the only regular stateroom category on the ship which does not feature a split bathroom configuration. A split bathroom has a toilet & sink in one section, with a shower & sink in the other; this provides the handy benefit of allowing two people to get ready at the same time.

Oceanview Staterooms on Disney Fantasy

Oceanview staterooms offer an outside view through a porthole window. Note that the window does not open.

There are two major choices within this category: a  Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom which is similar in layout to many other staterooms on the ship, and a  Deluxe Family Oceanview Stateroom  which is larger and offers many additional features geared toward larger families. Family staterooms generally hold more people than other staterooms onboard.

Verandah staterooms offer a private outside balcony which can be accessed through glass doors in your room. Most verandahs have see-through metal railings, but don’t fret if you have a toddler cruising with you — they also have clear plexiglass sheets on them for safety. Note that a few verandah category staterooms have solid metal partitions or are otherwise somewhat obstructed.

Disney Fantasy Dining and Lounges

It’s common knowledge that dining is an important part of the cruise experience , and the Disney Fantasy certainly lives up to those expectations. Onboard, you’ll find three main dining restaurants, two elegant adult-exclusive specialty dining options, a nightclub district and several lounges, plus plenty of places to grab a quick meal or a snack.

Rotational Dining Restaurants on Disney Fantasy

Like all Disney Cruise Ships, the Disney Fantasy offers rotational dining during the nightly dinner service. This concept is a Disney Cruise Line dining innovation; you’re pre-scheduled to visit a different restaurant on each night of the cruise with no need to make individual reservations. And you’ll have the same servers each night, so they’ll get to know you and your food preferences.

Dinner at these three restaurants is included in the cost of your Disney Cruise .

Animator’s Palate

Animator’s Palate is the flagship dining experience on the Disney Fantasy. It offers a fan-favorite menu along with a taste of the magic of animation.

The menu is inspired by the cuisines of Asia, California, and the Pacific. Be sure to try the black truffle pasta purseittes, a personal favorite of mine (and of many other repeat cruisers). You’ll also find butternut squash soup, wild mushroom risotto, polenta cake with tomatoes and mushroom, a lemon-thyme marinated chicken dish, beef tenderloin, and much more.

Your dinner also includes one of several shows which focus on the art of animation.

In one version of the show — known as Undersea Magic — interactive digital animation of the Finding Nemo characters allows you to talk with Crush! It’s very similar to EPCOT’s Turtle Talk with Crush.

In another version of the show — known as Animation Magic — you get a chance to become an animator! Start out by drawing your own character on a special paper placemat, then watch in awe as Sorcerer Mickey brings them to life at the end of your meal! I had a chance to do this on another Disney ship… it really does feel like magic!

• Enchanted Garden

The atmosphere of this French countryside conservatory truly does feel enchanted; it magically changes from daytime to sunset to nighttime, all during the course of your dinner! Light fixtures transform and flowers “bloom” as your meal proceeds.

Enchanted Garden offers a farm-fresh continental cuisine menu; My wife loves the lobster ravioli, while I’m always impressed by the unique curried carrot & apple soup. You an also enjoy the Ahi tuna and avocado tower, a lovely sea bass, marjoram-scented chicken, or pork tenderloin. Round out the meal with a tempting dessert of steamed lemon buttermilk pudding, banana sundaes, chocolate tortes, and almond meringue cake. Don’t be shy — order more than one!

Enchanted Garden sometimes serves as an alternate breakfast and lunch option (versus the primary onboard buffet Cabanas ).

• Royal Court

You’re invited to a royal feast at this elegant restaurant inspired by the greatest animated princess tales Disney has ever made. You’ll see nods to Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and many more classics.

Your four-course royal feast includes French- and American-inspired options. I love anything with pomegranate so I always order the pomegranate-glazed duck breast. There’s also spinach soufflé, and iced lobster and jumbo shrimp cocktail, avocado citrus salad, French onion soup, beef tenderloin with lobster medallions, and many more tempting choices. For dessert, indulge in a crunchy and creamy crème brûlée or enjoy a peanut butter mousse.

Royal Court may also serve an alternate breakfast or lunch service on some days.

Adult-Exclusive Dining on the Disney Fantasy

Disney cruises are certainly family-friendly, but there are still options which cater solely to adults because everyone needs a little time to themselves. One of the best adult-exclusive offerings on the Disney Fantasy is its duo of elegant specialty restaurants . So send the kids off to the Oceaneer Club, put on some nice clothes, and enjoy a date night at Palo or Remy!

Palo is the home of memorable Italian cuisine during your cruise. This gorgeous venue includes giant windows overlooking the ocean, providing a perfect backdrop for your meal. Dinner menu items include seared sea scallops, tableside-fileted dover sole, butternut agnolotti, tiramisu, and a signature chocolate soufflé that’s considered one of the most popular items across the entire Disney Cruise fleet. On sea days, a tremendously-popular brunch service is typically offered.

Dining here requires an upcharge and space is usually in high demand; book as early as your onboard booking window allows.

The most upscale onboard dining experience onboard the Disney Fantasy is Remy. The restaurant, named in honor of the diminutive chef in Ratatouille , transports you to France for a gourmet experience like no other. Dine in the main room, the 900-bottle wine room, or splurge for the luxurious private Gusteau room (complete with a custom multi-course menu).

Dinner at Remy begins with a signature champagne cocktail prepared at your table. Then, it’s a gastronomic adventure designed in part by Chef Scott Hunnel (of Disney World’s Victoria & Albert’s) and Chef Arnaud Lallement (recipient of three Michelin stars and voted by  other Michelin-starred chefs as one of the 10 best chefs in the entire world). A gourmet cheese trolley and selections such as duck, elk, Kobe beef, langoustine, and sablefish are hallmarks of the menu.

On certain cruises, there’s also a highly-demanded champagne brunch as well as a multi-course dessert experience.

Dining here requires a fairly significant upcharge. You’ll want to book as early as possible to have the best chance of securing a spot.

Casual Dining on the Disney Fantasy Cruise Ship

Breakfast and lunch are casual meals onboard the Disney Fantasy. So come as you are (just cover up any swimsuits) and grab a quick meal at Cabanas.

This buffet-style restaurant has nearly a dozen food stations offering a mix of American, Asian, and European favorites in an all-you-care-to-eat breakfast and lunch.

Décor-wise, you’re clearly “on the beach” here. You’ll find palm trees, “sand castle” artwork, and a Caribbean soundtrack. There’s also an impressive set of mosaic walls, with roughly 194,500 tiny Venetian enamel tiles making up scenes inspired by  Finding Nemo and the Great Barrier Reef.

As to the food, those seeking traditional American Breakfast favorites won’t be disappointed here. You’ll find all the usual morning offerings — custom-made omelets, bacon & sausage, Mickey Waffles, hash browns, and so on. But I always suggest making an effort to also try some of the international offerings that we normally don’t have for breakfast here in the states — perhaps an Asian offering such as rice and miso soup, or a European breakfast of fresh muesli with dried fruits and nuts. Because everything’s included, you can still pile on the Mickey Waffles alongside your more-adventurous choices.

Lunch at Cabanas is a daily-changing mix of chilled and hot choices. Jumbo iced shrimp & crab claws are longtime cruise favorites here, along with hamburgers, sandwiches, pizza, freshly-grilled meats, veggies, and much more.

Cabanas also offers an alternative dinner service most nights. It’s not buffet style at night; a server will present you with a menu and bring your food to you, and it’s usually a rather quiet meal. My spouse and I will sometimes plan to have dinner here on formal night if we don’t feel like packing dress clothes for the cruise.

Lounges, Bars, and Snacks on the Disney Fantasy

There’s always a place to grab a quick bite or a refreshing drink onboard. Whether you’re looking for a snack or a soda, or are seeking something a little stronger , you’ll easily find it on the ship. Here are just a few highlights:

• Beverage Station

There’s no need to purchase a separate drink package on a Disney Cruise, as most non-alcoholic drinks are included at no additional cost (a rarity in the cruise industry). This self-service beverage station located near the pool offers unlimited refills of sodas, teas, coffees, and other non-specialty beverages.

An adults-only retreat that focuses on specialty coffees and teas during the day, with cocktails in the evening.

A compelling open-air bar on Deck 13 offering expansive views and delightful cocktails. Adults only.

Eye Scream Treats and Frozone Treats

Cool down with all-you-can eat soft-serve ice cream cones (included in the cost of your cruise!), or spend a bit extra to enjoy a specialty smoothie.

Flo’s Cafe: Fillmore’s Favorites, Luigi’s Pizza, and Tow Mater’s Grill

For a quick grab-and-go snack poolside, check out these quick service windows. You’ll find pizza, chicken tenders, burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, and more.

Part of the Europa nightclub district, this lounge features highlights of Italy. Gather ’round the Carosello bar or settle into an intimate booth to enjoy live music and Italian-inspired cocktails. Adults only.

Meridian Lounge

Supplement your elegant meal at Remy or Palo by having cocktails at this upscale travel-themed lounge conveniently located directly between those two fine dining establishments. Cigars are also offered for purchase.

Minnie’s Sweet on You

Purchase hand-scooped ice cream, baked goods, and candy in this shop. Fees apply.

O’Gill’s Pub

Polish of a pint or two at this Irish pub, featuring live sport on-screen and some of the best American, Irish, and international beer on tap. Adults only.

A whimsical atmosphere and a custom private-label Taittinger Champagne are the hallmarks of this lush lounge. Adults only.

A serene lounge on Deck 14 in the forward funnel (red smokestack). This spot is often overlooked due to its secluded location, so it’s a quiet retreat with compelling views (and a great wedding venue, too!).

• Senses Juice Bar

Enjoy a healthy drink at this retreat near Senses Spa and Salon. Fresh fruit and vegetables give their all for these nutritious protein- and vitamin-packed beverages.

This adults-only bar provides scenic views of iconic city skylines around the world. Thanks to a little Disney magic, the view out the “window” changes to a different city every fifteen minutes.

It’s always London’s swinging ’70s at this mojo-bolstering nightclub. Pick a proper British cocktail or have a cuppa — it’s up to you! Adults only.

Room Service on Disney Fantasy

Most items on the Disney Fantasy’s Room Service menu are offered at no additional charge – you’ll only have to pay for a few specialty items and to tip the crew member who delivers the food to your room.

The standard room service menu usually includes soups & salads, chicken tenders, burgers & dogs, sandwiches & wraps, and hot wings.  You’ll also typically find a few flatbreads or pizzas and perhaps some pasta. Dessert is also offered — usually cookies, cake, or pie.

A favorite among repeat cruisers is the All Hands on Deck , a cheese, fruit, and crackers plate. Kids of all ages will be pleased to know you can also request a Mickey’s Premium ice cream bar – the same kind found at Disney World.

If you don’t mind coming out of pocket, you can add on specialty items such as beer, wine, canned soft drinks, deluxe coffees, juices, and pre-packaged snacks such as candies.

I personally usually skip the upcharge items and just go for the buffalo wings and perhaps a burger.

Best Bets for Each Meal on Disney Fantasy

Below are my personal picks for the best onboard dining options for each meal.

• Primary option: Cabanas is the number one breakfast spot onboard thanks to its long hours, expansive options, and all-you-care-to-eat service style. Mornings can be rather hectic here, but there’s rarely difficulty in finding a seat.
• Secondary option: One of the three rotational restaurants usually offers a table-service breakfast, complete with a server who will bring your food and keep your drinks refilled. The menu is a bit more limited than at Cabanas so I usually don’t go this route, but it’s definitely a much quieter option to start your day.
• Other options: Room service is available, but I tend to steer clear of it for breakfast. Why? First, you need to order in advance via a menu card that you hang on your doorknob the night before and I usually don’t know in advance what will sound good tomorrow morning. Second and more importantly, the room service breakfast menu is extremely limited. It’s a continental sort of menu with juices, coffees, pastries, and cold cereals. All well and good, but no bacon, eggs, sausage, or oatmeal? No thank you. Though I will admit that it’s nice to be able to order coffee and a light pastry to enjoy while watching sunrise from my verandah.
• Primary option: Like at breakfast, Cabanas is the best lunch option thanks to its wide selection. Iced jumbo shrimp and crab claws are a signature menu item most days and I usually eat my fill of them at least once during the cruise; you’ll also find freshly grilled meats, a wide variety of side items, some interesting international selections, and lots of tempting desserts.
• Secondary option: The food service windows at Flo’s Café offer an endless supply of burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, and ice cream cones. These windows are great for folks who want to spend the day by the pool without having to stray too far for a nosh. Even if you’re elsewhere on the ship, heading here is a good option due to their extended hours. More than once we’ve missed lunch hours at Cabanas and had to grab a bite here. They’re also a good choice when you have a late dinner seating but need something to hold you over.
• Other options : ne of the three main restaurants typically serves lunch with open seating, no reservation required. Room Service is another good option, though there’s sometimes a lunch rush which can delay your food’s arrival a bit. One minor complaint, though: the cloche-covered dishes sometimes mean that my hot wings don’t arrive quite as crispy as I’d like.
• Primary option: Your assigned rotational dining restaurant is the heart of Disney Cruise dining and shouldn’t be missed. Your dedicated service team follows you all voyage long and will likely become your favorite Crew Members onboard the ship (my wife and I made such a connection with our servers on a 2019 cruise that we still remember their names!). Add in special themed menus and other thoughtful touches, and you’ll quickly see why this is a highlight of each day onboard. We rarely skip it.
• Secondary option: As an alternative to your pre-scheduled rotational dining restaurant, you might opt to experience Cabanas in a totally new way. Dinner at Cabanas is an entirely different experience than the free-for-all buffet-style offerings that are the mainstay of breakfast and lunch. A host seats you at your table, and a server presents you a menu featuring some of the most popular selections onboard. As I mentioned earlier, my wife and I sometimes go this route when it’s formal night at the main restaurants.
• Other options: Many cruisers enjoy dedicating at least one night of their cruise to an adult-exclusive meal at Palo or Remy. I personally prefer the idea of going the brunch route there rather than dinner, but that’s just a personal preference. On he other end of the spectrum, you can always grab something from the quick-service windows on the pool deck, or order room service.

Off-Hours Eating and Snacking

• Primary option: For cravings outside the main meal periods, your best bet is Flo’s Café on the pool deck. Their generous hours and snack-friendly offerings make them a great choice to tide you over between meals. Individual portions tend to be “snack sized” (perhaps 2 or 3 chicken tenders and a few fries), so you won’t spoil your dinner unless you want to.
• Secondary option: Room Service is available 24/7, up until about 1:30 AM on the last morning of your cruise. It’s the only option for overnight snacking. I’ll occasionally order a few warm cookies and some milk at bedtime, but you can also order 4:00 AM buffalo wings with no judgement.

Disney Fantasy Pools and Water Slides

The AquaDuck is the premier water attraction onboard the Disney Fantasy. This first-of-its kind (water coaster on a cruise ship) attraction takes its guests on a wild adventure high above the upper decks of the ship.

Guests board a raft and are propelled by jets of water through 765 feet of tubes and open-air slide segments; along the way, you’ll experience a 4-deck drop, a careening curve over the edge of the ship, and a journey through one of the iconic red smokestack funnels.

You don’t have to pay extra to ride the AquaDuck, but you will have to wait in line (sorry, no FastPass, Lightning Lane, or Genie+ here). Lines tend to be longest on Sea Days and shorter when the ship is in port. You might have the best luck if you’re willing to ride while everyone’s ashore at Castaway Cay . Riding earlier or later in the day can also help avoid crowds – just don’t forget to check the operating hours each day in the Navigator app.

To ride solo, Guests must be at least 54″ tall and at least 7 years of age. Children under the age of 7 who are at least 42″ tall and toilet-trained may ride with a companion who is at least 14 years of age.

Pools and Splash Pads

An interactive water play zone on Deck 12. Paint cans, shower heads, pop jets, and more make up the splashy atmosphere of this experimental area concocted by Huey, Dewey, and Louie. Kids can patch leaky pipes, “control” water flow to the AquaDuck, and dodge spills from the Ducky Dinghy. Ages 3+; supervision required for those under age 16.

• Donald’s Pool

This pool offers a shallow wading area with a deeper center. This is a perfect place to enjoy Disney movies on the giant 24′ x 14′ FunnelVision screen nearby. This pool is sometimes closed during special on-deck events, covered with a retractable floor to offer more deck space.

Funnel Puddle

A shallow (approximately 1-foot deep) family friendly pool that’s far removed from the raucousness of the Donald’s and Mickey’s pools. This is the closest thing the Disney Fantasy has to a “quiet pool” that’s still open to all ages; but there’s still a small water fountain feature in the middle that kids love to splash in.

• Mickey’s Pool & Slide

The shape alone clearly communicates this is designed for kids; The deeper zones of this still-shallow pool are shaped like the friendly face of everyone’s favorite pal, Mickey Mouse. Meanwhile, one of Mickey’s signature white gloves supports a bright yellow waterslide for kids aged 4 to 14 / height 38″ to 64″. May be closed during deck parties.

• Nemo’s Reef

This toddler-friendly splash zone features PIXAR characters spraying water, a child-sized Mr. Ray waterslide, and more — all in a shaded, enclosed, soft-surfaced area. Ages 3 years or younger; swim diapers are required.

• Quiet Cove Pool

A serene oasis for those 18 and up to get away from the kids for some quiet time. There’s a three-circled pool of varying depths, lounge-style seating in the shallowest segment, a whirlpool spa, and of course plenty of adult beverages nearby.

Satellite Falls Pool

One of the most unique water spaces onboard the Disney Fantasy, Satellite Falls is an adults-only wading pool that features drizzling water directly underneath one of the giant satellite domes on the ship’s upper deck.

Disney Fantasy Kids Clubs and Teen Clubs

Much of Deck 5 on the Disney Fantasy is dedicated to spaces especially designed for younger passengers (thanks in part to space saved by not having casinos onboard the ship ). Here’s a preview of the kids clubs and other youth-friendly spaces onboard the ship.

• Disney’s Oceaneer Club

The Oceaneer Club is the primary kids activity onboard the Disney Fantasy. It’s the place where your kids will probably spend most of their time onboard.

This secure facility is accessible only to kids aged 3-10 and trained youth activities staff — but there are pre-scheduled open houses to allow parents and children to tour the location together. Inside there are tons of kid-friendly spaces and activities, and it’s all included in the cost of your Disney cruise! Tweens and young teens (ages 11 to 14) have a space all to themselves onboard the Disney Fantasy, and it’s in one of the most exclusive spots on the entire ship: inside the iconic red smokestack funnel on Deck 13! Edge is the perfect place to relax as tweens see fit — a huge video wall, a dance floor, karaoke machines, a game room, and photo booths. The furniture can even be moved around so Guests can make the space their own. A mix of planned activities and unstructured free time keeps things interesting.

Those aged 14 to 17 have a unique indoor/outdoor space made just for them, complete with a super secret entrance! Indoors, teens will find plenty of TVs, video games, and tablets, plus dance parties, karaoke sessions, and group activities. Outside, there’s a private sundeck at the bow of the ship that’s perfect for games, splashing in one of two small pools, and sunbathing.

Tiny cruisers are well cared for in it’s a small world nursery! , an onboard babysitting service for infants and toddlers aged three and younger.

Disney youth counselors watch over the tykes, playing with them, feeding them, and handling diaper changes.

Nominal fees apply, charged by the half-hour (one-hour minimum). Discounts are offered for multiple children in the same family. Advanced reservations are strongly recommended. There are no in-room babysitting services onboard.

Disney Fantasy Entertainment and Activities

Given Disney’s reputation as an entertainment powerhouse, it’s no surprise that the shows and experiences onboard the Disney Fantasy are of the highest quality.

Broadway-Style Shows in the Walt Disney Theatre

Each night of your cruise, you’ll be treated to a live show in the beautiful Walt Disney Theatre. This includes at least three Broadway-style shows during your cruise, along with other additions (such as family-friendly comedians, ventriloquists, magicians, or even hypnotists) on longer voyages.

Shows are typically offered twice nightly, with times are opposite your dinner time onboard. Those with early dining will see the late show, while later diners will see the early show.

Disney’s Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular

Spectacular special effects and just a little magic from the lamp bring this timeless tale to the stage with music and comedy. Marvel at the Magic Carpet and just try to figure out how Jafar transforms! You’ll also enjoy beloved songs from the film as well as a new one written just for this production.

Disney’s Believe

A true stage spectacular, featuring 300+ costumes, 200+ scenic elements, and a cast of characters assembled to help a daughter provide her hard-working father a bit of perspective on what’s truly important in life.

Frozen – A Musical Spectacular

A lively musical retelling of Anna and Elsa’s journey. Kristoff, Sven, and Olaf are all here to join in the adventure, and of course all the familiar songs are there, too.

Pirate Night / Pirates in the Caribbean Deck Party with Fireworks

Pirate night starts with the delivery of pirate bandanas to your stateroom – then the party moves to your scheduled dining location for the evening, where a special themed menu awaits. Then, head up to the pool deck for a raucous show with high-flying pirates including favorite Disney characters. Finally, the grand finale (and another Disney innovation) – fireworks at sea!

Note: not every itinerary offers a pirate night, and fireworks may be canceled due to weather.

Sailing Away Deck Party

The official start to your cruise on the Disney Fantasy. Your vacation begins when the ship’s horn plays those familiar notes and confetti rains down from the upper decks. Captain Mickey and all his pals are there to join the fun to ensure your trip gets off to a great, high-energy start.

Disney Movies in the Buena Vista Theatre

First-run and classic Disney, LucasFilm, Marvel, and PIXAR films are shown all day long inside the Buena Vista Theatre. Every show is completely free — you don’t even need a ticket! Just check the Navigator app or signs outside the theatre for showtimes, then head inside to find a seat.

This is honestly one of my wife’s favorite things to do onboard the ship. It’s a great way to catch up with films she might have missed throughout the year, or to re-watch one that we haven’t ever seen on a true big screen.

If you find yourself sailing during the premiere of a highly-anticipated Disney film, you don’t have to worry missing out. It’ll be shown practically non-stop in the Buena Vista Theatre, likely following a huge “PremEAR at Sea” showing in the Walt Disney Theatre.

Goofy Golf and Sports Deck

If you prefer your entertainment to be a bit more active, there’s plenty of great recreation to be had on Goofy’s Sports Deck , located on Deck 13 aft.

One of my absolute favorite things to do onboard the Disney Fantasy is to play a round of Goofy Golf. The nine-hole course features plenty of terrible puns, which is right on par (see?) with my terrible sense of humor. It’s completely free to play and you don’t need to reserve a tee time. Just grab a putter and a goofball, er, golf ball — and perhaps a scorecard/pencil if you insist on keeping things official. More hard-core mini-golfers will appreciate that each hole offers two tee locations — one just for fun and one for a slightly more challenging experience.

Elsewhere on the sports deck, you’ll find other, more mainstream pursuits, such as a basketball court and even a digital sports simulator (fees apply).

Down on deck 4, you’ll also find shuffleboard courts — a classic cruise activity.

If it’s your first time on the Disney Fantasy, I highly suggest setting aside some time on the first few days of your cruise to play the Midship Detective Agency activity that’s offered onboard. Not only is it tons of fun, but it’ll also send you all over the ship — a great way to get your bearings and discover things you might have missed otherwise.

Your adventure starts on Deck 5, where you’ll visit a kiosk to pick up a “badge,” a deck plan / casebook, and instructions on where to find your first clue.

This extensive activity has you seeking out more than 20 interactive artwork displays to find clues and stolen items. Thanks to random gameplay events and “choose your own adventure” dilemmas, it’s easy to play this over and over without getting bored.

Depending on the agency’s caseload, you might help Mickey and pals recover some stolen paintings, try to find 99 missing Dalmatians, or follow Pepe the King Prawn’s clues to solve a zany Muppet mystery. The Muppet case is my favorite! See if you can find Pepe the King Prawn’s stateroom door on Deck 5.

Don’t have a ton of time to commit? No worries. Your detective badge tracks your progress, so you can play at your own pace, starting and stopping as you like.

Disney Fantasy Spas and Salons

Disney Fantasy offers a full-service spa onboard the ship, featuring many other health and wellness services.

Senses Spa and Salon

Pamper yourself with spa treatments, salon services, and rejuvenation procedures at this restful retreat onboard Disney Fantasy. Some of the services offered at the spa include Swedish massages, aroma stone therapy, deep tissue massage, acupuncture, facials, teeth whitening, shampoo/cut/style, manicures, pedicures, and more. Even those who aren’t into spa treatments might still be interested in enjoying the Rainforest Room with its various themed shower settings. Complimentary non-alcoholic beverages, showers, lockers, sandals, and robes round out the offerings. While prices are higher than at spas on land, many repeat cruisers feel that Senses Spa is worth the added expense .

Exclusively for guests aged 13-17, this special area of Senses offers treatments to teens. A parent or guardian must accompany the teen for the duration of the treatment ( solo and combined treatments are offered as an option).

• Fitness Center

Perhaps you’re a regular exerciser, or maybe you just want to offset several days of all-you-can-eat meals. Either way, you can stay in shape with the offerings at the Disney Fantasy’s onboard fitness center. Whatever your preferred equipment — weight machines, cardio equipment, ellipticals, treadmills, and others — you’re likely to find it here. If you prefer a group experience you can join a yoga, Pilates, or aerobics class. Or, opt for personalized one-on-one training and analysis with a professional trainer.

• Walking/Jogging Track

I enjoy a nice walk after dinner, so I appreciate that the Disney Fantasy offers an open-air covered walking/jogging track on Deck 4. I like that it’s low enough on the ship to offer some close-up ocean views — especially handy if you’re lucky enough to see wildlife such as dolphins playing alongside the ship. A leisurely stroll is perfectly fine, but jogging is also fair game here if you don’t want to miss your daily run while onboard. You might even recognize off-duty Crew Members getting a bit of exercise.

We skip the fluff in this article and instead, provide a rundown on the Disney Fantasy tips and secrets that will most positively affect your cruise experience.

Disney Fantasy Cruise Tips: Check-in, arrival, and boarding

• O nline check-in is open to first-time guests 75 days prior to your sail date.
• When doing online check-in, select the earliest possible port arrival time. An earlier port arrival time will yield an earlier boarding group number when it comes time to board the ship.
• You may arrive at the cruise terminal early despite your designated port arrival time.
• Boarding group numbers (the order in which you get to go on the ship) are not assigned until you check-in at the cruise terminal.
• Boarding typically begins at 12:00 PM noon.
• Despite your extensive Disney Cruise planning and preparation , you will still be overwhelmed (with excitement!) when first getting onto the ship.
• There is no one directing you where to go or what to do first once stepping foot onto the ship. My recommendation is to print off a map of the Fantasy ahead of time. Then, make your way to the lunch buffet at Cabanas restaurant immediately upon boarding.

Disney Fantasy Cruise tips: Sailing away

• In cruise terminology, “Forward” is the forward part of the ship, and “Aft” refers to the back of the ship.
• In cruise terminology, “Port” is the left side of the ship as you face forward. “Starboard” is the right side of the ship as you face forward.
• Your Disney cruise stateroom will not be ready for you to use until around 1:30 PM. You will be informed via a general overhead announcement. This means having to make your way around the ship with your carry-on items and continue wearing the clothes that you came in until allowed into your stateroom.
• For this reason, pack swimsuits and sunscreen if you hope to lounge around outside on the pool deck until your stateroom is ready.
• Disney Cruise staff will be walking around before you are allowed into your stateroom selling water bottle and drink packages (beer and wine) that will then be delivered to your room.
• For the best view, watch the Sailing Away party that is held on the main pool deck from the deck above the party. Deck 10 on the Magic and Wonder, Deck 12 on the Dream and Fantasy.
• Disney Cruise staff walk around handing out drinks during the Sailing Away Party but take note, they are not free. We found the drink packages unnecessary when considering the carry-on alcohol policy .

Disney Fantasy Cruise tips: Your stateroom

• There is plenty of storage space once inside your stateroom. Dresser drawers are deep, the beds are high enough to fit/store a suitcase underneath, and the ottoman top comes off and has storage inside.
• No need to worry about assembling additional sleeping space each night. Turn down service is performed every evening and your beds will be all ready for you upon returning to your stateroom each night.
• The porthole windows in the Oceanview staterooms are HUGE, provide excellent views, and let in lots of sunlight (the window sill is actually a bench that 2 small children can sit in). Do not shy away from these rooms if you don’t want to pay the price upgrade for a stateroom with a verandah.
• On the Dream and Fantasy, your cabin light switch is activated by your Key to the World Card. You can also place a library card or other card in it for convenience.

Disney Fantasy Cruise Tips: Getting around

• Most people tend to use the large, main stairways instead of the elevators to travel between floors on the ship.
• Even though the ship is huge, you will get a general feel for the layout once you’ve been on it for 2-3 days. I would not let kids roam alone however, for it can be confusing how to get to and from places.
• Make your own or purchase personalized door magnets from an Etsy shop to put on the outside of your stateroom door. Most people do so and you will regret not doing it if you don’t. This also helps children recognize your stateroom door among the thousands of other look-alike doors.
• We did not participate in the ‘fish extender’ tradition and didn’t feel that we missed out, or wish that we had.

Disney Fantasy Cruise Tips: Dining

• Main Dining reservations begin at 5:45 PM with evening showtime starting at 8:30 PM. Second Seating dining begins at 8:15 PM with even showtime starting beforehand at 6:15 PM. (Double-check exact time per your itinerary.)
• You may make requests for your dining time preferences through a Disney reservation agent, as well as again when you check-in at the cruise terminal.
• Your Key to the World Card is coded with your reservation information and table number, as well as has an acronym on the front that depicts the order of the restaurants that you have been assigned to visit i.e. AERA (Animator’s Palate, Enchanted Garden, Royal Table, Animator’s Palate).
• You can also speak with a Disney reservation agent to request which restaurants you’d like to repeat eating at during longer itineraries.
• Many little girls dress up as princesses for dinner.
• The non-alcoholic drink that you order for dinner the first night of your cruise will be automatically waiting for you at your table upon arrival to a restaurant on consecutive evenings. i.e. If your child orders lemonade on the first night, a lemonade will already be on the table for them upon arrival to evening dining the next night.
• Disney Cruise Line serves Coke products.
• Soda is free 24-hours a day at the soda stations on the pool deck.
• Room service is quick and Mickey Ice Cream bars are the most popular item to order. We ordered them every night before bed.
• Remy and Palo are great ‘date night’ options but do know that the food costs are extra and are not included in the Disney cruise fare .

Movies, Shows, and Celebrations

• The evening shows are as amazing as everyone says. Do not miss one despite being tired at the end of the day. In my opinion, the evening shows are just as good, if not better, than versus Disney World !
• Watching a movie in the Buena Vista Theater is a great way to take a break during a hot and sunny day.
• The popcorn and snacks available outside of the movie theater are very tempting but do cost extra money (and are spendy!).
• You can bring food from elsewhere on the ship (pizza, chicken strips, snacks, etc.) into the theater.
• Every cruise has a pirate night and most people dress-up. A red pirate bandana is placed in your stateroom for each member of your party. If you don’t have a costume, wear the bandana somehow (hair tie, necktie, on your head, etc).
• Kids love the self-guided Midship Detective Agency game that is available on the Disney Dream and Fantasy. There are two locations where you can start the game at a Detective Agency booth; Deck 2 near Enchanted Garden, and Deck 5 near “It’s a small world” nursery.
• Make note of when the evening Captain’s Reception is and be sure to attend. Kids can attend too. (Adults are given a free alcoholic drink.)
• Do not miss pre-booking a Disney Character VIP Breakfast during online check-in. Though it costs extra, it is well worth it! Kids can take photos with all of the Disney characters.
• On the day of departure, be sure to attend the See Ya Real Soon Farwell party . It is awesome! (Strange how not many people attend, probably because they’re busy getting packed up.)

Activities and Excursions

• The pools on the cruise ship are not big and are mostly shallow. They are more like ‘wading pools’.
• Long waits accumulate for the Aquaduck waterslide . Get in line 10-15 minutes before it opens each morning for little to no wait.
• On port days, many announcements regarding shore excursions, etc. will be read via an overhead speaker system. Listen carefully as valuable information is shared, as well as when guests are required to return to the ship.
• As you get off of the ship to spend the day on Castaway Cay (pronounced ‘key’), there will be beach towels to grab as you get off of the ship.
• Purchase the Castaway Cay Getaway Package . It is well worth it. We found the bikes to be the best as there are family-friendly biking trails that take you around the entire island.

Disney Fantasy Cruise Tips: Departure

• You have to place your suitcase out in the hallway the night before you get off of the ship. MAKE SURE you save out clothes to wear the next day as well as all of your carry-on and necessity items.
• Bring a spare emergency credit card in case your company freezes yours (if seeing international charges).
• Settle your on-board account the evening before departure. The line for doing so on the morning of departure gets very long.

Disney Fantasy Fun Facts

The Disney Fantasy sails out of Port Canaveral, Florida on popular seven-night Caribbean itineraries. The itineraries alternate between the Eastern and Western Caribbean.

All of the Disney Fantasy cruise itineraries include a stop at Disney’s private island in the Bahamas, Castaway Cay.

• The Disney Fantasy first sailed in 2012.
• It was the 4th ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet after the Disney Wonder, Disney Magic, and Disney Dream.

Is the Caribbean calling your name? Then get ready to set sail with Disney Cruise Line aboard the stunning ship – Disney Fantasy.  This ship’s primary itineraries focus on 7-day sailings to the Eastern and Western Caribbean.  The Fantasy was built in 2014 and features 14 decks of nautical fun that will add a big sprinkling of pixie dust to your time at sea!

Welcome Aboard! 

The moment you arrive at the Disney Fantasy you’ll know that you’re someplace extra special.  Crew members will be in the stunning main atrium to welcome passengers by name.  A bronze sculpture of Minnie Mouse takes center stage in the lobby.  The Art-Nouveau design complete with stained glasses chandelier is nothing short of awe-inspiring. 

But that’s not all! Across the Disney Fantasy’s 14 decks you’ll find enchanting entertainment, spacious staterooms, interactive youth clubs, adult-exclusive areas, pools & recreation and so much more!

A Review of Our Disney Fantasy Caribbean Cruise

A Disney Fantasy Cruise in the Western Caribbean

When I posted to Instagram that we were booked on a spring break Disney Fantasy Cruise, a lot of people DMed me to ask why. It’s a reasonable question – although we’ve been on a number of cruises, we don’t love cruises, and we’re not a big Disney family. 

It goes back a decade. When my kids were small, starting at 1, 3 and 5-years-old, we did three 12-night Disney Cruises in Europe . We booked them because they were easy – unpack once and see a lot of cool places – and because Disney is, by definition, family-friendly. Our kids went to the kids club a few times, and waited in line for character photos every once in a while, but really they just enjoyed the ship and the independence, since they could run around by themselves, and we (the parents) liked the days in port. 

There’s a sweet spot with Disney cruises, between maybe 3 and 10-years-old, when a lot of kids love Disney and the character interactions and shows are magical. Then the magic kind of disappears….except that my oldest daughter always watched the teens on the ship and thought they were having the most fun. On our last cruise she made us promise to bring her back when she was a teen. And this year, at 17, she took us up on it. 

A Disney Fantasy Cruise for Spring Break

As I’ve mentioned before, my youngest daughter has one-week school breaks in February and April, and my two high schoolers have a two-week break in March. This year my wife and I took our 13-year-old to Thailand for her February break , and then I was tasked with the Disney Cruise in March. Looking at Disney’s cruises, they only had one option for a 7-night cruise that fit within our spring break dates – the March 11-18 Western Caribbean sailing. The port stops on the itinerary weren’t exciting, but this wasn’t about the stops; it was about my daughter (hopefully) having fun on the ship with other teens. We dragged my 15-year-old son along since he had nothing else planned for break.

This Disney Caribbean Cruise Review

I hadn’t intended to write about our cruise, but so many people have commented on my Instagram posts and stories with questions about the cruise, wanting my honest thoughts about Disney cruises for families and for couples, that I’m writing this up. Just keep in mind that it’s coming from a cruise skeptic and a non-Disney person. If you love cruises and you love Disney and your kids love Disney, you can stop reading now. Just book it! You’ll love it. 

Disney Cruises – What Disney Does Well

We spent a few days at Universal Orlando before our cruise and then took an Uber from Sapphire Falls Resort to the Disney Cruise Terminal at Port Canaveral (1.5 hours with traffic, $58 plus a very good tip). Check-In was bizarrely easy. Getting out of our Uber, port personnel immediately took our checked suitcases. We then proceeded inside, well before our assigned arrival time, checked in right away with no wait, and were on the ship less than 5 minutes later. This was completely different than our last European cruise with Disney where check-in in Copenhagen was a disorganized nightmare. If you’re sailing from Port Canaveral from Disney’s Terminal 8, expect things to be easy. Then our luggage was delivered to our cabin a couple hours later, far earlier than promised. 

The Disney Fantasy itself

This trip we sailed on the Disney Fantasy. The ship is very nice – the attention to detail is impressive, and the ship’s nicer than a lot of others I’ve been on. We had a “Deluxe Family Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah”. The two bathrooms worked out really well – my son and I had our things in the bathroom with the toilet, and my daughter took over the one with a shower. Speaking of the shower, it was excellent – really well-designed and larger than most ship showers, and the water pressure was better than at a lot of hotels. I like that there was a curtain between my bed and the kids’ beds, effectively turning the cabin into two bedrooms at night. I loved the main cabin door – it actually closed quietly so I could sneak out in the morning for coffee and not wake anyone. The balcony was great too. FYI, we were in cabin 7090 and loved it – a perfect mid-ship location. 

Dinners on a Disney Fantasy cruise rotate among three themed restaurants – Royal Court, Enchanted Garden and Animator’s Palate. Animator’s Palate is by far the best-designed – playful and creative, with interactive elements. 

Disney-Themed Things

At the beginning of the year I traveled to Antarctica with Adventures By Disney on an amazing trip and I liked that there were Disney elements but not too many. Antarctica was the star. That’s not the case with Disney Cruise Line though. Disney art, characters, shows and music are omnipresent. If you love or even just like Disney, you’ll enjoy it. For us it’s fine – impossible to ignore and we wouldn’t book a cruise because of it, but not a big deal. It’s fun to see kids walking around dressed up like pirates and princesses – kind of Halloween in March. And there were current Disney films playing in the theater every day.

The Staff and Service

I was impressed with the efficiency at which the Disney Fantasy cruise staff got us on and off the ship at every port stop, with our server at every dinner, and with all other staff that we interacted with (with the exception of the Vibe teen club staff, but I’ll get to that). Our cabin attendant was pretty good as well. On other Disney Cruises I’ve questioned some of the automatic gratuities, feeling like people didn’t always deserve them. I had no such thoughts on this cruise though. 

The Inclusions 

Food and soda are included in your cruise fare, with exceptions. And I was impressed that a Disney person handed out towels at every cruise stop. I forgot to pack towels and wasn’t sure if I should try to sneak some from the pool deck for our port excursions. No need – they give them to you. And free coffee is always available on the pool deck. 

I’ve felt like staff on other cruises were always trying to sell us on things – drink packages, art, onboard shopping, port excursions, future cruises. Disney doesn’t do that. You can purchase any of those things, but they’re not in your face. I really appreciate that. 

The Disney Cruise App

Disney used to deliver daily briefings, on paper, to every cabin at night. They were a huge waste of paper, especially in Europe where Disney didn’t have shopping partnerships and the briefings were sometimes 50% blank. They’ve moved everything to the Disney Cruise App, which works well on board. There’s passenger messaging within the app too, so I could communicate with my kids. If I could suggest three improvements, they would be:

• Please include the current time in the app. We had time zone changes and a daylight savings time switch during our cruise and people were often confused about what time it was, since we couldn’t trust our cell phones. 
• It would be great to send photos within the messaging platform, like of the lunch buffet if one kid was still in the room.
• I’d love to be able to add my own things to the schedule instead of only selecting from Disney’s pre-programmed options. Through a Facebook group a lot of the solo parents on board planned get-togethers. I couldn’t add those to my daily app calendar though and missed some of them.

Disembarkation

There’s no way to quickly get 3,800 passengers off a ship at the end of a cruise, but Disney does a pretty good job. It took us roughly half an hour to leave the ship, go through immigration/customs and get to the Disney airport bus. FYI, buses were leaving as quickly as they were filling up. We had a seated breakfast at 8:10am, got in line to leave the ship just after 8:30, were on a bus at 9:00 and at MCO airport at 10:00, well before our 12:34pm flight to LA. It would be amazing if they could add a Global Entry line at the port – it’s the first time we’ve waited in line for US passport checks in ten years! FYI, no issues on our flight back. We grabbed our car at LAX parking and were home by 6pm – not a bad travel day.

What Disney Could Improve On

Disney outsources its spa and fitness center to a company called One Spa World. One Spa World also manages the spas for most other major cruise lines, including Celebrity, Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Holland America, Princess and Virgin. The problem is they’re publicly-traded and they, and their employees, have a financial incentive to upsell you. I booked a 50-minute massage for the first at-sea day. It was the worst massage I’ve ever had. The spa personnel and massage therapist tried to upsell me six times in an hour, which ruined the experience. Massages are supposed to be relaxing! And when I posted about it on Instagram, I received over 50 comments from others with similar negative cruise experiences that almost all went back to spas run by One Spa World. My massage, with gratuity, was over $180. But I also, according to them, needed an upgrade from soft/medium pressure to medium/firm pressure for $30, orthotics for $199, a skin brush for $45, body oil for $65 and refreshing gel for $59. Please put a stop to this Disney! This is a horrible experience for everyone getting massages on board. And after declining all of the add-ons, I’m pretty sure my masseuse dumbed down my massage. Of the 50 minutes I paid for, only 35 or so was spent on my body. The rest was a really weak head massage. Such a letdown, and not worth anywhere close to $180. 

The food onboard the Disney Fantasy was ok. I mean, everything sounds great on the menus, but then it comes to the table and it’s…ok. One staff member even commented that he could make a certain dish better than Disney. I understand that the kitchen staff is feeding 3,800 passengers on board every day, which is a crazy undertaking that I don’t pretend to have a grasp of, but I wish things tasted a little better.

I should note that I had an excellent brunch at Disney’s adults-only restaurant Palo for $45, which is some of the best money I spent. But that just served to show that there are people on board who know how to cook well. The pizza at Palo was so much better than the poolside pizza at Luigi’s. Why not make better pizza for everyone? 

Other thoughts: It would be great to have a buffet dinner option if you don’t feel like a rotational sit-down dinner. Indian entrée options would have been nice at lunch and dinner. And there’s a food dead spot between 6pm and 9pm at the casual places near the pool. That’s fine for people with the early dinner seating, but for us (with an 8:15 dining time every night), if we were hungry at 6:15 and needed something small to tide us over, the only option was room service. They should keep something open later than 6pm. 

Weird Pricing

My daughter loves Diet Coke. It was free if she got it herself by the pool or in the restaurants, or if a server in a restaurant brought it to her. But if a server from the bar or room service brought it to her, there was a charge of a couple dollars. Given that Disney Cruises don’t usually nickel and dime guests, it seems like a strange thing to charge for. They should be 100% consistent – included means included.

The Vibe Teens Club

My daughter had a lot of negative things to say about the staff at the Vibe Teens Club (for 14-17-year-olds). She and her friends just wanted a place to hang out, but it sounds like that’s not an option. If there was an event like karaoke or Disney trivia planned and you were in Vibe, you had to participate, and the other areas of the club were closed off when scheduled activities were going on. So she and her friends had to constantly move elsewhere on the ship. And there’s a Vibe sun deck, but it wasn’t open most of the time. Overall she says the counselors treated the teens like little kids, and were constantly disrespectful (except Casey). I heard the same thing from other parents, so it wasn’t just her. So disappointing since this should have been the primary teen hangout and the counselors continually sabotaged that.

St. Patrick’s Day

St Patrick’s Day is my favorite food holiday and is always fun to celebrate. A lot of passengers wore green. Disney did…nothing. I wish meals had been St. Patrick’s Day-themed, with boxty, corned beef, potatoes, colcannon, soda bread and all other traditional Irish foods. There were no themed character appearances, no decorations, no green pools, no green soft-serve, no Irish food, no related activities – it was like every other day. Such a wasted opportunity to have fun! Beware if you’re booking a Disney Cruise over a holiday.

Light Switches

It seems like the most basic thing in the world to me: put bathroom light switches inside the bathrooms. That way if it’s dark you can go in, close the door and then turn on the light, so you don’t wake up everyone in the cabin by flooding it in light. Yet Disney put the two bathroom light switches outside the bathrooms. Every night my daughter came back to the cabin between 3am and 5am. She was quiet, but as soon as she turned on the bathroom lights, it woke me up. Grrrrr. How did you get this so wrong Disney?

3,800 people are too many on what’s essentially a floating resort. The pools were packed, especially on days at sea. We preferred the smaller Disney Magic (2,400 passengers), and we like smaller ships even more.

Our Disney Fantasy Cruise

Having said all that, we had a good cruise overall. The Disney cruise was my daughter’s idea and I went into it thinking she would be disappointed. But she made great friends and stayed out until 3am or later every night with them, so from her perspective it was a success. My son and I hung out, played shuffleboard, threw a football in our cabin a lot, went to the fitness center daily, read and relaxed. There are worse places to spend a week than on a really nice ship.

Our Disney Fantasy cruse port stops were in Cozumel, Mexico, Grand Cayman, Falmouth, Jamaica and Disney’s Castaway Cay in the Bahamas. We went onshore at all four. In Cozumel and Grand Cayman we walked around a little and got lunch. In Jamaica we hired a driver for the day, Richard Brooks of Excursion Ocho Rios . Richard picked us up at 8am, took us to Dunn’s River Falls for a fun hour of waterfall hiking, drove us all around Ocho Rios, and then took us to lunch before we returned to the ship at 3pm. It was a great day. Castaway Cay was a lot of fun – far more than I was expecting. We took a water ball, football and frisbee and threw all three in the ocean and on the beach. We also rode bikes around the island paths several times. 

In a perfect world I would have selected more interesting ports, or at least places that I haven’t been before, but there weren’t any other options that fit into our spring break dates. A Disney Caribbean Cruise is more about the ship and Disney experience than the ports though – kind of the opposite of their Europe sailings for us. Our favorites were in reverse order of the stops: 1) Castaway Cay; 2) Jamaica; 3) Grand Cayman; and 4) Cozumel. 

I highly recommend Disney Cruises for families with young kids – under 10 or so. For couples and families of older children, if you don’t really love Disney, I’m not sure that it’s worth it? I loved sailing on the Celebrity Edge, and thought the food on the Edge was better than on the Disney Fantasy. If Celebrity Edge -class sailings are priced better than Disney, and especially if the ports are more interesting, I’d probably opt for those instead.

How much is a Disney Cruise?

Our Disney Fantasy 7-night sailing was $8,864 for three of us. That’s a lot of money and the reason why I’m a little negative above. Disney overall delivers a very good experience, but can do better – especially when it comes to food, the spa and the Vibe teen club. I noted that we were in a Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom. There are cheaper options available, including interior rooms. There are also more expensive rooms and, of course, if you have more people in your family it’s more expensive. 

We Ubered from Universal Orlando for $58. We paid twice that, $117, for a Disney transfer to Orlando Airport after the cruise, since I didn’t know how difficult it would be to order an Uber or Lyft from Port Canaveral. 

My massage was $185.82 with tip. Standard gratuities were $304.50. My daughter spent around $90 on internet access. Bicycles in Castaway Cay were $26 for two of us. Brunch at Palo was $55 with tip. Laundry was $7. Our driver for the day in Jamaica was $260. Dunn’s River Falls was $25/person. Internet seemed a little high at $24/device/day for the middle tier, and my massage was an absolute waste of money. 

You generally won’t need foreign cash when on a Caribbean cruise. Most places will accept US dollars or credit cards. Make sure your credit card waives foreign transaction fees .

I should note that on our Adventures By Disney trip in January on an expedition ship gratuities were included, as were sodas and premium coffees, and there was coffee in the rooms. If Adventures By Disney can do that, I would think Disney Cruise Line could do that too. Automatic gratuities are like Resort Fees – completely unnecessary. Just build them into the overall pricing to make it easier for people to compare vacation options. 

Disney Fantasy Cruise – Health

Passengers on our sailing seemed healthy, and Disney made sure the ship stayed clean. Most hand sanitizer stations looked to be empty, but staff handed out disinfecting wipes to everyone before heading into the restaurants. I only saw three families regularly wearing masks on board.

I averaged 12,000 steps a day while on the cruise and worked out daily. I lost two pounds and was in better shape after the cruise than before. I didn’t go crazy at buffets or drink.

I took along our medical kit from Duration Health but didn’t need it. My kids took maybe six Dramamine tablets total when they were feeling the motion of the ship. After Antarctica in January, I’m pretty sure I’m immune to minor ship swaying. We likewise didn’t need to use our travel health/cancellation policy from G1G Travel, but given how expensive the cruise was, and the fact that we would have lost 100% of the cruise cost if we canceled within 14 days and 75% if we cancelled within 29 days, I was glad we were protected.

Disney Fantasy Cruise – Packing

We packed light for our Disney Fantasy cruise. We didn’t bring door decorations or alcohol or clothes specifically for formal night or semi-formal night, and we didn’t bring costumes. The weather was warm everywhere. We easily could have gotten by with swimsuits, shorts, a couple t-shirts, slightly nicer shirts (and dresses) for dinners, sunscreen, flip-flops and walking shoes. I wore pants, a button-down shirt and nice shoes for my brunch at Palo, but Palo is optional. My daughter wore a hoodie for her late-night partying since the decks cooled down at night. We had two half-filled Patagonia rolling duffels thinking we may shop at the ports, but we didn’t buy anything. Per my Castaway Cay comments above, we were glad we brought balls and a Frisbee for the beach.

Thank you for your review, and I agree for the most part. Having cruised 12 times with Disney, I got used to the food. The first 2 or 3 years, I ate off of the children’s menu, but eventually learned to enjoy the higher class of food above a burger and fries. The events are great, the guest costuming is fabulous, but the after dinner snacks were few and there was no late night buffet except for Pirate night. Very expensive is the only way to describe a Disney cruise, but you do get a lot more that what some other ships offer. You are paying for a 5 star experience in the dining room, up on deck, in your room and in your entertainment. All the other cruise lines are playing catch up with Disney. It is worth the one time experience, but at the lower price tiers, their is a lot of competition.

Oh, by the way, I believe you can still get a copy of the paper Navigator with the days activities at the concierge desk or from your room steward, at least at Royal Caribbean you could. For us seniors who have difficulty with the app life, the paper version is needed, and also I did not care for the pay for ice cream salon… again a nickel and dime-ing that Disney is not known for. Finally, they need more on board activities on at sea days. 90% of the offerings are alcohol related tastings. Cooking, towel folding, origami, etc. I do appreciate the DVC members meeting, they should have more DVC sponsored events.

The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Disney Cruise Line ship

Is a voyage on a Disney Cruise Line ship on your bucket list? You'll find a growing number of options when it comes time to pick an itinerary.

While the cruising arm of Disney has long focused mostly on voyages to the Caribbean and the Bahamas, with year-round sailings to those destinations out of Florida, it also now offers a relatively wide range of seasonal sailings to Alaska, the Mexican Riviera, Bermuda, Europe and Canada.

The family-friendly cruise brand, notably, is expanding its footprint worldwide as it adds four new vessels in quick succession.

Already, the first of those ships, the 2,508-passenger Disney Wish , has arrived, boosting the size of the Disney fleet from four ships to five and allowing for more departures to the Caribbean, Mexico and Europe.

Two more sister vessels to Disney Wish are due to begin sailing in 2024 and 2025, respectively, allowing for further expansion in Disney cruise itineraries. In addition, the line has yet another new vessel coming in 2025 that isn't related to the other three. Called Disney Adventure, it's a one-off vessel originally designed for an Asian line , and it'll sail in Asia (perhaps catering mostly to Asian travelers; Disney has been mum so far on the target audience for it).

All these new ships arriving in quick succession will likely mean not just more departures to destinations where Disney Cruise Line is established but also sailings in new regions. For example, Disney has never before offered Asia sailings.

Here are our picks for the five best Disney cruise destinations you can visit with your family.

Caribbean and Bahamas

Disney Cruise Line's top destination has always been the Caribbean and the Bahamas. Since its founding more than two decades ago, the brand has based the bulk of its fleet in Florida to offer sailings to the islands. Port Canaveral, which is just an hour away from Disney's Orlando-area theme parks, has always been its biggest hub.

The line is particularly known for three- and four-night cruises out of Port Canaveral to Castaway Cay and Nassau in the Bahamas. These short getaways let families get a taste of Disney cruising that some Disney fans pair with a stay at Disney World.

The cruise line also regularly offers seven-night sailings out of Port Canaveral that visit Caribbean islands like St. Thomas and Tortola.

In recent years, Disney has also built up its Caribbean and Bahamas cruise offerings from other ports in Florida — initially Miami and, more recently, Fort Lauderdale. The ships the line has based in these ports typically offer four- and five-night sailings to Castaway Cay and one other port, such as Cozumel or Grand Cayman.

In addition, Disney is offering a growing number of Caribbean sailings out of Galveston, Texas, and New Orleans.

For 2024, the line will have four of its five ships — Disney Wish, Disney Dream, Disney Magic and Disney Fantasy — sailing to the Bahamas and Caribbean out of one of the above ports, with their home bases often shifting between them.

Disney Wish, which is Disney's newest ship, will be based in Port Canaveral year-round to operate the line's classic three- and four-night sailings to the Bahamas. These voyages are designed to be paired with a visit to nearby Disney World for a longer Disney vacation.

Disney Fantasy will also sail out of Port Canaveral to the Bahamas and Caribbean year-round, offering longer voyages.

Disney Dream will spend the start and the end of the year sailing short trips to the Bahamas and Caribbean out of Fort Lauderdale, with a stint in the middle of the year (from May to October) sailing in Europe.

Disney Magic will take Disney Dream's place sailing short trips to the Bahamas and Caribbean out of Fort Lauderdale from May to October. During the early and late months of the year, it'll sail out of Galveston.

Come 2025, Disney will have four ships — Disney Fantasy, Disney Wish, Disney Dream and Disney Magic — sailing three- to five-night getaways from Florida to the line's Bahamian destinations, including its new private beach destination Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point and its long-open private island Disney Castaway Cay. Disney Fantasy and Disney Wish will operate the trips from Port Canaveral, while Disney Dream and Disney Magic will sail from Fort Lauderdale.

Before taking up residence in Florida in April 2025, Disney Magic will also offer three months' worth of sailings out of Galveston, Texas, to Progreso and Cozumel in Mexico and Grand Cayman.

All of the 2025 sailings are already open for bookings.

Disney has cut back on voyages out of San Diego for 2024, after increasing its San Diego departures sharply in 2023. But it still offers several trips to Mexico out of the city on Disney Wonder.

For 2024, the 1,754-passenger vessel will offer a mix of three- to seven-night sailings to Mexico during March and April. Shorter three- and four-night sailings typically feature calls at Ensenada, Mexico, and California's Catalina Island. Seven-night sailings include calls at Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta in Mexico.

The big factor driving Disney's cutbacks on sailings out of San Diego in 2024 is its new focus on voyages out of Australian ports. Disney Wonder will spend much of January and February sailing out of Australian ports and then return to the region in October for another season of Australia trips.

Disney offers a wide variety of itineraries in Europe every summer, from Mediterranean voyages out of Barcelona and Civitavecchia, Italy (the port for Rome), to Northern Europe sailings out of Southampton, England.

Ranging from seven to 11 nights, Disney's Europe voyages each year typically take place on a single ship that sails from multiple home ports throughout the season. For 2024, that ship will be the 2,500-passenger Disney Dream. The line has yet to announce which of its ships will go to Europe in 2025.

Typical for the shorter itineraries the line offers in Europe are seven-night sailings out of Civitavecchia to the Greek Islands. These sailings stop in Mykonos, Santorini and Crete in Greece, as well as Naples, Italy.

A longer, 11-night itinerary starting in Civitavecchia and ending in Barcelona includes calls at Piraeus (the port for Athens), Santorini and Mykonos in Greece; Messina (on the island of Sicily), Naples and Livorno in Italy; and Toulon, France.

Among Northern Europe itineraries, Disney offers focused, weeklong sailings to Norway with calls at the Norwegian ports of Alesund, Nordfjordeid, Eidfjord and Stavanger.

Disney does not have a large presence in Alaska. The line sends just one ship to Alaska each year. Family-friendly cruise rivals Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Line, by contrast, each send three ships to Alaska each year, and Norwegian Cruise Line sends five vessels to the destination.

Still, Disney fans won't feel like they're missing out. The one vessel Disney sends to Alaska each year, the 1,754-passenger Disney Wonder, stays for nearly the entire summer season, from late June to mid-September and offers a distinctly Disney take on The Last Frontier.

Always beginning and ending in Vancouver, British Columbia, and lasting seven nights, Disney's Alaska sailings typically include stops at three of these four Alaska ports: Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan and Icy Strait Point (which three vary by departure date). Itineraries also include a visit to Stikine Icecap, which is south of Juneau.

These are fairly typical ports for an Alaska cruise. But the (extra-charge) activities that Disney has organized for the ports aren't always the same as what other lines offer.

As one might expect for Disney, the line has crafted some of its shore excursions in Alaska ports with special Disney touches, such as Disney character appearances at the Liarsville Gold Rush Trail Camp & Salmon Bake tour in Ketchikan. (Having done this one myself, I will say, for the record, that it's a little hokey; but it does get you a Disney character fix if that's your aim.)

Another shore excursion with a Disney touch is the outdoor Family Scavenger Hunt at Icy Strait Point, where participants join a local guide on a hunt for items such as clam shells and native plants, as well as a "special surprise" with a Disney theme.

Unlike many lines, Disney does not offer one-way sailings to Alaska from Vancouver or Seattle that can be paired with add-on land tours to create an extended sea-and-land Alaska vacation — something known as a "cruisetour." If that's what you're looking for, and you want to stick with a family-friendly line, you might want to consider the one-way cruisetour offerings from Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line.

Disney typically offers at least one and sometimes several cruises to Bermuda each fall, ranging from quick, five-night trips to longer, eight-night sailings.

For the year just ending (2023), the line offered four such sailings, and it's offered even more than that in certain years. Alas, for the coming year (2024), Disney currently does not have a single Bermuda sailing scheduled — a bit of an anomaly.

That said, we would expect Disney to bring back its Bermuda sailings for 2025 or 2026. It's been such a mainstay of the brand.

Bottom line

Family-friend Disney Cruise Line is a relatively small cruise brand, with just five ships (one of its biggest rivals in the family cruise market, Royal Caribbean, has 26 vessels). But that doesn't mean its itinerary choices are limited. The line offers regular sailings to the Caribbean and Bahamas, Mexican Riviera, Alaska, Bermuda and Europe.

You don't have to be a rocket scientist to find Port Canaveral thrilling. This is the home of the Kennedy Space Center, where you can catch a fascinating glimpse into the history - and future - of the U.S. space program. Or, take a leisurely stroll along the Cocoa Beach Pier; the shopping is great and the beach views are truly "out of this world."

Powdery white-sand beaches, lush green mountains, and a sheltered yacht-filled harbor characterize the island of Tortola, where the past of the West Indies meets the present of the BVI. The largest island in the chain, Tortola offers a variety of exciting vacation possibilities. The protected anchorages at Brandywine Bay, Cane Garden Bay, Hodge's Creek Marina Cay, Soper's Hole, and Trellis Bay are ideal for boaters. Secluded palm-shaded beaches at Apple Bay, Brewer's Bay, Elizabeth Beach, Josiah's Bay Beach, Long Bay Beach, and Smuggler's Cove make for excellent swimming and snorkelling. There are also many well-equipped facilities for fishing, snorkelling, scuba diving, or horseback riding. Wander through centuries-old ruins such as the Dungeon, Fort George, Fort Recovery, the Mount Healthy Windmill, and Callwood's Rum Distillery, which is still in operation, and explore Tortola's history at the BVI Folk Museum in Road Town. Main Street in Road Town, the capital city, has an array of shops and restaurants, offering everything from local spices, jams, rums, and soaps to hand-crafted jewellery, silk-screened fabrics, and local art. The cuisine of Tortola reflects the island's rich cultural mix, whether it's a four-star dinner at a converted sugar mill or a delicious West Indian roti at a pastel-painted cottage. Local delicacies such as fresh lobster, conch, spicy goat, curries, and Johnny Cakes make each meal memorable. Escape to the cool slopes of Sage Mountain National Park, where traces of the primaeval rain forest can still be seen at higher elevations. On the mountain ridge that runs thorough the island, observe local Caribbean life with its gentle rhythms, farms, settlements, and churches. At Mount Healthy National Park and Queen Elizabeth National Park, rock outcroppings and vertical ghuts, or dry steam valleys, expose the deep, rich earth of this volcanic island. In Road Town, the J.R. O'Neal Botanic Gardens offer peaceful walks through pergolas and pathways covered with colorful vines, as well as a miniature rain forest and a fern house. The people of Tortola are friendly and known for their warmth and hospitality. There are a wide variety of places to stay, ranging from campgrounds to luxury resorts and private villas. Tortola is also an ideal point from which to explore the other British Virgin Islands. Regular ferries, private and crewed yachts, and planes travel daily to the other islands of the BVI.

St. Thomas/Charlotte Amalie

Charlotte Amalie, capital and chief port of the Virgin Islands of the United States, on Saint Thomas Harbor, southern Saint Thomas Island. Rum, bay rum, woolens, jewelry, and sugar are exported. Local industries include boatbuilding, rum and alcohol distilling, and the production of handicrafts. A picturesque town built on three hills, Charlotte Amalie is a free port and a major tourist resort. Of special interest are Fort Christian, built in 1671; Beretta, the shopping area; and the Frenchtown section. Charlotte Amalie is the site of the College of the Virgin Islands and the Museum of the Virgin Islands. In 1672 the Danes founded the first permanent settlement on the site, naming it Amalienborg or Charlotte Amalia, after their queen. The city is also popularly known as Saint Thomas, which was the official name from 1921 to 1936. It became capital of the American territory of the Virgin Islands in 1917, when the former Danish West Indies were purchased.

Castaway Cay

Castaway Cay is a private island in the Bahamas which serves as an exclusive port for the Disney Cruise Line ships. It is located near Great Abaco Island and was formerly known as Gorda Cay. In 1997, The Walt Disney Company purchased a 99-year land lease for the cay from the Bahamian government, set to expire in 2096, giving the company substantial control over the island. Castaway Cay was the first private island in the cruise industry where the ship docks alongside so guests do not have to tender to land. The island is still largely undeveloped, as only 55 of the 1,000 acres (4.0 km2) are being used. Castaway Cay now has approximately 60 Disney Cruise Line permanent residents who keep the island running daily; the numbers fluctuate between the busy season and off season.

Hi Scott, In reviewing the various posted Personal Navigators I’ve noticed a trend. For the past 5 Fantasy sailings that there are Navigators for me to confirm from, it appears DCL is cutting entertainment in the WDT on embarkation day. In addition, this appears to be a trend with sailings longer than 8 days, regardless of vessel. With each ship having 3 signature shows performed by the WDT cast members, all other days are filled by external variety acts. I’ve been on 27 Disney cruises and there has been an activity in the WDT on embarkation day on every single one of them. For the Fantasy, which is always a 7-night, they would have “A Fantasy Come True” on embarkation day which was a perfect “mini stage show” introduction and the cruise director would welcome everybody onboard and talk about the upcoming itinerary. Three nights would be the signature stage shows from the WDT performers, 2 nights would be external acts and 1 night would be a movie (don’t get me started on them playing a movie in the WDT as an evening’s entertainment when there’s a movie theater onboard). Anyway, longer cruises equals more nights to have to pay for entertainment and it appears this is another cost-cutting measure on DCL’s part. Nothing like the cruise director giving everyone a “Welcome Aboard” on the second night. I’m going to be on the 06/08 Fantasy 7-night Inaugural Lighthouse Point sailing and fear that for the first time in 20 years, I’ll be in my stateroom watching TV on day 1 while I wait for dinner. The following are voyages where it appears there was no evening entertainment in the WDT on embarkation day: Fantasy 05/11/24 7 East, Fantasy 05/04/24 7 West, Fantasy 03/23/24 7 West, Fantasy 01/06/24 7 East, Fantasy 12/02/23 7 West, Wonder 03/01/24 10 Hawaii, Wonder 02/16/24 15 South Pacific, Wonder 10/13/23 13 South Pacific, Wonder 10/03/23 10 Hawaiian, Magic 12/03/23 14 Panama & Dream 05/05/24 13 Transatlantic. I understand you’re not affiliated with DCL but as an experienced DCL guest, I’m curious as to if you have any thoughts or feedback on this “new behavior”. Thank you.

That's why my picks for the best Disney cruises for families in 2024 are all about these kinds of extra special experiences, the ones that aren't just the usual level of Disney cruise line magic but will elevate your family vacation into once-in-a-lifetime "cherished family memory" territory.

There will be no shortage of these kinds of opportunities on Disney Cruise Line (DCL) in 2024. From being among the first to visit Disney's brand-new private island destination to enjoying an immersive Pixar-themed day at sea to setting sail on the maiden voyage of Disney's newest ship , here are the Disney cruise experiences I think will go above and beyond in 2024. 

1. Disney Magic to Lighthouse Point, DCL's newest private island destination

One thing my family looks forward to during any Disney cruise is a stop at DCL's private island, Castaway Cay. In 2024, Disney Cruise Line will unveil its second private island destination, Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point , on the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas. And I can’t wait to see how they plan to outdo the already incredible Castaway Cay experience.

Similar to when Disney created its Aulani resort in Hawaii , Disney Imagineers have been working with local artists and cultural experts to design an authentic Bahamian island experience at Lighthouse Point. Curvilinear buildings are meant to evoke scattered seashells along the shore, and a Bahamian Art and Culture Pavilion will feature special programs and local artists that celebrate Bahama traditions. 

A special preview cruise to Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point on the Disney Magic departs from Fort Lauderdale in June 2024.  

2. Alaska and Australia cruises on the Disney Wonder in 2024

When my youngest daughter graduated from high school, my wife and I asked where she wanted to go for our family vacation to celebrate her milestone . Her top choice was Alaska. In the summer months, Disney Cruise Line positions one of its smaller ships, the Disney Wonder, out west so families can take weeklong sailings from Vancouver to the "Last Frontier." Along the way, you can experience majestic wildlife and stunning scenery while calling on Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, and glacier viewing along the Stikine Icecap.

But that's not all the Disney Wonder gets up to! In 2023, Disney also began offering Australia and New Zealand cruises onboard the ship, and that will continue in 2023 and 2024. Disney Cruise Line has announced a new season of sailings in the region from October 2024 through February 2025. 

The Disney Wonder is one of DCL's original class of ships, and with a capacity of 2,713 passengers, it remains one of the line's most intimate vessels. That's a reason to love it. Both the Wonder and its sister ship, Disney Magic, are especially great Disney cruise options in 2024 if your family is new to cruising . Far from being a drawback, the smaller size makes it less likely to feel overwhelming to first-timers.

3. European vacations on the Disney Dream

In 2023, Disney Cruise Line sent the Disney Dream across the Atlantic for the first time. The ship will head back to Europe in 2024 with summer cruises in the Mediterranean, Greek Isles, British Isles, Iceland, and Norwegian fjords. These are the best 2024 Disney Cruises for experiencing new ports of call like Valencia, Spain; Haugesund, Norway; and Hamburg, Germany, along with three Mediterranean destinations (Catania, Italy; Kusadasi, Turkey; and Valletta, Malta) that Disney will visit for the first time since 2014.

In June, the Disney Dream sails from Civitavecchia (Rome) with stops in Naples and three different Greek Islands, including Mykonos and Crete. My family sailed on Disney’s inaugural Norwegian fjords cruise in 2015, and it was hands down our best family vacation because of the Disney-specific experiences no other cruise line can offer, such as Anna and Elsa from "Frozen" posing for pictures at a Norwegian Village museum in Ålesund.

4. Disney Cruise Line's private island trifecta on the Disney Fantasy

Many fans of Disney Cruise Line’s private island get particularly excited when itineraries include a Castaway Cay "double dip," i.e., two stops at Castaway Cay. But in 2024, the Disney Fantasy ventures on a seven-night itinerary that calls on Disney’s private islands not once, not twice, but three times with a stop at Castaway Cay and two visits to the brand-new Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point.

I love Disney’s Castaway Cay and have enjoyed so many relaxing stops to the island. I especially remember learning the "stingray shuffle" and holding stingrays during Castaway Ray's Stingray Adventure. I love that this 2024 Disney cruise will give families plenty of time to explore Disney’s brand-new private island destination on the southernmost tip of Eleuthera without overlooking a day at the old favorite. 

5. Disney Wish theme park and cruise vacation

The Disney Wish is DCL's newest ship (for now), debuting in July 2022 and offering three- and four-night cruises to the Bahamas from Port Canaveral, Florida . The close proximity of Port Canaveral to Walt Disney World makes it easy to combine an Orlando theme park vacation with a Disney Cruise.

Disney land and sea vacations are the best of both worlds for families with theme park lovers who want to go, go, go, and other family members looking for a more laidback experience. My advice is to head to the theme parks first, get tired out from the walking, rides, and stimulation, and then sail off on a four-night cruise to decompress. My wife and I enjoyed the most expansive stateroom ever when we sailed on the Disney Wish last summer and it couldn't have been more relaxing.

6. Themed Cruises – Pixar, Marvel, and holidays

In January, I had the opportunity to experience Pixar Day at Sea , Disney Cruise Line’s newest themed cruise, on the Disney Fantasy. In my review for FamilyVacationist, I called it an " overflowing toy box of fun " and I'm excited for more families to experience it on a Disney cruise in 2024. The cruise was packed with so many Pixar character meets, themed-activities, special shows, foods, and treats that some of it spilled into additional days at sea. In 2024, Pixar Day at Sea returns to the Disney Fantasy on seven-night Caribbean sailings from January through March.

Disney's themed cruise days aren't limited to Pixar, either. There's a Marvel Day at Sea on five-night Disney Dream cruises departing Fort Lauderdale from January through March, and when the festive season rolls around most of the ships offer holiday sailings with Halloween on the High Seas and Very Merrytime cruises. 

I was so impressed with the Halloween tree in the ship's atrium when my family sailed on a Halloween cruise. Over the course of the cruise, the tree "bloomed" with spooky Jack-o-lanterns. In addition, Disney characters were decked out in costumes, there was trick-or-treating, and other special activities. And of course Very Merrytime cruises have a tree-lighting ceremony, Mickey and Minnie’s Holiday Party, carolers, special drinks and treats, and appearances by the guest of honor for the cruise, Santa Claus.

7. Disney Treasure Sets Course for Adventure

Last but not least, Disney Treasure joins the Disney Cruise Line fleet with its maiden voyage on December 21, 2024. Adventure is the theme for Disney's sixth cruise ship with spaces and entertainment inspired by "Aladdin," "Coco," "Zootopia," "Jungle Cruise," even "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea."

As a fan of the Magic Kingdom’s Jungle Cruise ride and Skipper Canteen restaurant, I can’t wait to get immersed in the kitschy 1930s adventure vibe onboard the Disney Treasure. The ship will sail seven-night itineraries to the eastern and western Caribbean and have a theater-in-the-round restaurant at the Plaza de Coco as well as a cinematic dining experience at Worlds of Marvel. Because these are longer cruises than those available on DCL's other ship in the same class (Disney Wish), you can experience two distinct shows in each of these venues during a voyage.
