Dota 2: DPC 2023 Tour 2 Division I Overview – South-East Asia, China and South America

Dota 2: DPC 2023 Tour 2 Division I Overview – South-East Asia, China and South America

Discussing the teams and tours from the remaining regions of the DPC

Following our analysis of the Eastern Europe, Western Europe and North American teams for 2023 DPC Tour 2 Division 1, we complete the set by slotting the remaining regions — South-East Asia, China, and South America — together. Although all three regions have fallen on relatively hard times, with the Chinese scene especially being in a state of utter turmoil at the moment, their Dota Pro Circuit tours will nevertheless contain plenty of action, and might reveal some teams which can give the current cream of the crop a run for their money.

With Dota 2 Patch 7.32e now in full swing, the meta has shifted somewhat, and it’ll also be interesting to see how teams adapt with new strategies, or put tactical spins on old ones. The new Hero, Muerta, isn’t in Captain’s Mode yet, but enough changes have certainly taken place to spice things up in the meta department. Without further ado, then, let’s take a look at each of these three divisions.

  • 1.2 Analysis
  • 2.2 Analysis
  • 3.2 Analysis

DPC 2023 Tour 2 South-East Asia

South-East Asia is currently the rising region in the world of Dota, with many of their teams successfully going toe-to-toe with some of the best teams around the world. The best thing about the region is the constant flow of new players that seem to enter the scene every year, with no dearth of fresh Dota talent wanting to take their career all the way. This part of the world is still extremely passionate about a game that has sort of fallen out of favor in a few other regions, and this shows in their rapid improvement.

Here are the South-East Asian teams for Tour 2 of the 2023 DPC:

  • Army Geniuses
  • Blacklist International
  • Bleed Esports
  • Polaris Esports
  • Talon Esports

After their fantastic run at the Lima Major, Talon Esports are the new favorites for this group. The team has improved immensely since their subpar finish in the Winter DPC, and although things are still hotly contested, we’d tip them to be the favorites based on their recent high. Their biggest competition will most likely be Geek Slate and Blacklist International, who both did very well in the last DPC only for GS to not manage to get out of the Group Stage of the Lima Major while Blacklist was edged out of the Major slots in the last week of play.

Mark your calendars, boys. We're back for the DPC SEA 2023 Tour 2! 🙏 Don't miss out on the action. Let's go! #SOARWITHTALON #Dota2 pic.twitter.com/lnZxBmHFGc — TALON (@TALON_ESPORTS) March 13, 2023

Last DPC winner Execration doesn’t seem like the powerhouse it was then, and it’ll be interesting to see how they change up their game in the new meta. Meanwhile, Bleed Esports has made several changes to their squad, and they’ll be one of the teams to watch. Team SMG are another team that could challenge for the title, with many close matches last time that didn’t quite go their way. As for Polaris Esports and Army Geniuses, there’s plenty of potential for the two teams, but they are, for now, relatively unknown quantities in Division 1.

DPC 2023 Tour 2  China

What can we say about China that hasn’t already been said in the last few weeks? The once-great region has been hit by controversy and criticism, with many different teams or players from those teams having been banned by Valve themselves for taking part in unscrupulous or downright illegal activities. The most notable of these are the former team Knights, who even made it to the Lima Major off the back of their unfair methods. The region is still under strict scrutiny from the authorities, and hopefully things will get better now.

  • Aster.Aries
  • Invictus Gaming
  • Outsiders from CN
  • Vici Gaming
  • Xtreme Gaming

Whether it’s a result of streaming becoming more popular than scrimming with your team in China or the massive amount of cheating and corruption within the region, the outcome remains the same. China, from once having been the only region to have three iterations of the International, is now barely an afterthought when considering the best teams in Dota 2. Even the likes of PSG.LGD and Team Aster couldn’t crack the top 6 at the Lima Major — which marks a new low for Chinese teams, and will hopefully be a wake-up call.

We're live starting tomorrow! https://t.co/ruyHm2eMZH https://t.co/NtQ3y2GCKZ — Perfect World Dota ⚔️ #DPCCN (@PWRD_DOTA2) March 13, 2023

With many teams having been kicked out of Divisions 1 and 2, the current Division 1 has a few unknown quantities in the form of Outsiders from CN and Division 2’s Ybb Gaming. Meanwhile, Vici Gaming and Invictus Gaming both have a long and illustrious past that they’d like to build upon now that they’re back in the first division, while Aster.Aries, who showed plenty of promise last time but couldn’t manage the results, will have their shot at redemption.

DPC 2023 Tour 2 South America

The hopes for South America were sky-high going into the Lima Major, but unfortunately for their fans, the results didn’t quite pan out. There’s still a ton of talent in the region, but a combination of complex reasons and perhaps a dash of impulsiveness and an aversion towards adhering  to some fundamentals of the game tend to cause them to capitulate during crucial matches. If teams from the region can patch up this side of them, we will surely be in for some South American glory.

  • Alliance.LATAM
  • Evil Geniuses
  • Thunder Awaken

With beastcoast and Evil Geniuses still looking like the top contenders, it might take a while before another team surpasses them, but the recent change in meta could mean a change in the fortunes of the teams. Alliance.LATAM looked good last tour, as did Infinity, Keyd Stars and Thunder Awaken. These teams deserve to have an eye on them on account of their previous performances, and a surprise here or there wouldn’t, in fact, surprise us.

It's SA DPC time 🤠 pic.twitter.com/FiPRTDXFB1 — Beastcoast (@beastcoast) March 12, 2023

The two new teams, No Runes and Qhali, aren’t exactly expected to top the charts, but they themselves might cause some upsets against the mid table teams. Overall, the SA region has tremendous potential, and with the region having experienced their first ever local Major, things might ramp up and more sponsors could take note. More money almost always means a better scene, so if you’re in the region or are a fan of it, cross your fingers.

We’ll be providing weekly recaps for each division, so make sure you don’t miss them. Also, check out our wide variety of other Dota 2 content.

Dota Pro Circuit 2023: DPC Spring Tour scores, standings, and points

One-third of the 2023 Dota Pro Circuit is done after the Lima Major recently concluded with Gaimin Gladiator’s triumph over Team Liquid, though the latter had to play with a stand-in due to a health emergency .

While Dota 2 ’s best got to test their mettle at this year’s first LAN event, a mini roster shuffle kicked off for everyone else in the interim. Teams around the world again set out on a search to find a working formula as a way to recompose after crashing out of the DPC and Major .

This roster shuffle period didn’t last long, however, as the DPC kicked off on March 13 with Division I action.

This time around, teams are competing for a spot at the Berlin Major, the second LAN event of the 2023 season, and the penultimate DPC gate before The International 12.

Given the poor results of some regions at the Lima Major, there were talks regarding reducing the available Major slots of weaker ones, but Valve hasn’t made any changes to the distribution of slots yet. The developer has been busy working to improve the game’s competitive integrity, banning over 40 Dota 2 pros and kicking five teams out of China’s DPC Tour in the process.

With a slight reminder from Valve that they are always watching, to the point where it completely reshaped the Chinese DPC for the Spring Tour, the next part of the season commences with full force, and here’s everything you need to know about it, including its prize pool, format, schedule, standings, and all of the DPC Points up for grabs.

Dota Pro Circuit 2023: Full DPC Spring Tour points, scores, and standings

The Spring tour for the 2023 DPC is taking place on Patch 7.32e , which introduced Muerta . Despite a new hero, there was a clear lack of impactful changes for the overall meta, which will hopefully arrive with 7.33 in late April .

In the meantime, Dota 2 fans and pros are stuck with another variation of 7.32 for the remainder of the Spring tour that started on March 13 and will end on April 2.

Once the division one action wraps up, division two will kick off on April 5.

  • Prize pool: $205,000 and 920 DPC Points

  • WEU: March 13 to April 2
  • SEA: March 13 to April 4
  • SA: March 12 to April 1
  • Prize pool: $75,000
  • NA: April 5 to April 25
  • WEU: April 5 to April 25
  • Dates: April 27 to May 7
  • Western Europe: Four teams
  • China: Four teams
  • Eastern Europe: Three teams
  • Southeast Asia: Tour teams
  • North America: Two teams
  • South America: Two teams

The bottom two teams in Division I will be relegated to Division II, while the first two teams of the latter will advance to the first division. Teams placing last in the second division will relegate from the regional leagues, and they will be required to play through open qualifiers for their chance at redemption against other teams looking to earn their spot in the DPC.

Here are the complete regional results for all six Dota 2 regions across both Division I and II—The standings are updated as the matches are completed and with finalized results bolded to show they are locked in.

Disruptor

Big man, big spot, big hit: Canavan's walk-off single lifts Braintree past Weymouth in D1

BRAINTREE – At 6-foot-6, Sean Canavan usually is hard to miss. Lately he's seemed even bigger than that.

Braintree High's junior first baseman has made a huge splash in his first varsity playoff run. On Sunday, he swatted a two-run home run in a comfortable opening-round win over Peabody in the Division 1 tournament . On Tuesday, in a much more uncomfortable spot, he again came through with flying colors.

Canavan's walk-off RBI single in the eighth inning plated Peter Brooks from second base and gave the Wamps a thrilling 3-2 win over Bay State Conference rival Weymouth in the Round of 16. Canavan, a left-handed No. 3 hitter, lashed a 1-1 pitch the opposite way into left field with one out, and Brooks beat a high relay throw with a head-first slide.

"I saw that the outfield was playing really deep," Canavan said. "Peter Brooks and Hayden Regan had two singles (to set the table), and I just knew I had to get the ball into the outfield, put it in play. It was amazing to see the team running out (to mob me). Just to move us along and spend another week with this team is amazing."

No. 4 Braintree (19-3) advances to the Elite 8 against the winner of Wednesday's game between No. 5 Leominster (17-2) and No. 12 Westford Academy (19-2).

"It's unbelievable," senior DH Jake Joyce said of Canavan's star turn. "The other day he knocked a home run. He's really turned up. He's showing his true colors at the end of the year."

More: Craft-ing a heroic moment: South Shore top performers from MIAA state tournament

Canavan spent the 2023 season on JV as the Wamps were set at first base with senior Jack Fitzgerald, who hit .308 with 20 RBIs. Canavan's walk-off hit was his 21st RBI of this season, breaking a tie with Regan for the team lead.

"He's had a great year," Braintree coach Bill O'Connell said. "First team (league) all-star. Our young guys, the first-year (varsity) players, have really come through. They're not rookies anymore at this point in the season. He was ready for this opportunity."

Canavan also made an impact with his glove, snaring a well-hit ball by Weymouth leadoff hitter Matthew Suplee down the first-base line and winning a race to the bag to record the first out in the top of the eighth. Had that ball gotten through, Weymouth might have had a leadoff double and even more momentum after wiping out a 2-0 deficit with a pair of runs in the sixth.

Instead, sophomore Max DeRoche was able to work a 1-2-3 eighth to set the stage for Canavan's heroics. DeRoche was brilliant, too, throwing 99 pitches in a complete game while allowing three hits and three walks with nine strikeouts. The only time he ran into trouble was in the sixth, when Andrew Daley hit a sacrifice fly (to score Suplee) and Alex Munchbach singled home Gill Dolan to tie the game at 2-2.

More: Playoff time: South Shore high school MIAA state tournament scoreboard and schedule

DeRoche (5-0) escaped further damage that inning with a strikeout and wound up retiring the final seven Weymouth batters he faced. He came in with a sparkling 1.46 ERA.

"As a sophomore, it's not easy in these (pressure-packed playoff) games," said Joyce, who opened the scoring with a second-inning sacrifice fly that plated Sam Garrity. "He really pulled it together. He saw the top of their order in extras and he was nails."

Braintree's Nick Rucky made it 2-0 in the fifth with an RBI double that scored Sean O'Rourke.

The ending was a cruel one for No. 20 Weymouth (14-10), which posted a second straight fine season. The Wildcats were 18-6 last spring, losing 1-0 to Bridgewater-Raynham in another Round-of-16 heartbreaker.

"Coming off of last year, kind of an historic year, I knew we'd be pretty good," Weymouth coach Joe Paolucci said. "But because we haven't had a ton of success in past years, I was really worried about whether or not we'd be a playoff team. We were certainly that and a lot more."

Weymouth bids farewell to UMass-bound Dolan, who had one final hit to extend his program-record career total to 95 . He was the hard-luck loser on the mound, working 2⅓ innings after pitching just 3⅓ innings all season.

Asked what Dolan has meant to the program, Paolucci said, "I'll probably start to cry if I have to answer that. He wears his heart on his sleeve. Offensively, defensively he's one of the best players I've ever seen. And for him to come in and pitch the way he did (was impressive). He doesn't pitch a lot. But we just trust him."

While Weymouth had to say goodbye, Braintree will stick around a while longer in its quest for a first state crown since winning back-to-back Super 8's in 2015 and 2016. The Wamps' other titles came in 1972, 1984 and 1989.

"This team has a goal in mind and we're halfway there," O'Connell said. "We're going to keep plugging along and see what happens."

The Five: Which Viktor Hovland will show up and more major Memorial storylines

Need to Know

Change Text Size

DUBLIN, Ohio – There’s no rest for the weary at this point in the PGA TOUR calendar. The Memorial Tournament presented by Workday kicks off a crucial three-event stretch, with the U.S. Open and the Travelers Championship, the final Signature Event of the season, rounding out the trio of tournaments.

The bunched schedule allows players to catch fire and make a Scottie Scheffler-like run. Could that be Xander Schauffele, who finished second at Quail Hollow and broke through with a win at the PGA Championship? Or could it be Rory McIlroy or Scheffler or Wyndham Clark or Ludvig Åberg? The next three weeks will loom large over the narratives that carry through the end of the FedExCup season and into 2025.

So, here are the top five storylines of the week to get everyone ready for the Memorial at Jack’s place.

1. Which Viktor Hovland will show up?

Viktor Hovland was direct when describing the challenges Muirfield Village Golf Club presents.

“It's going to punish you and bring you down if you miss it on the wrong sides,” he said Tuesday. “I think it's one of the hardest courses we play all year.”

For the Hovland we saw the first four months of 2024, a course of that difficulty was likely to break him. He struggled to control his ball flight and had not tallied a top 10. But the version of Hovland we saw at the PGA Championship, who challenged Xander Schauffele down the back nine and nearly claimed his first major, was the same version we saw win the 2023 Memorial.

And it’s that version the golf world eagerly hopes is here to stay. His title defense at Muirfield Village is his first start since the solo third at Valhalla Golf Club, offering us the first chance at an answer.

Hovland said his form returned at Valhalla and remained through his practice sessions. He has continued to work with swing coach Joe Mayo, who Hovland brought back into his inner circle ahead of the PGA Championship. The two worked together in 2023 during the best year of Hovland’s career.

The reversal in form begs the question, does Hovland regret parting with Mayo in the first place? Hovland didn’t go that far but said it’s been a learning experience.

“Looking back, I've given this some thought, I'm a completely different player than I was when I first came out here, and every single thing that I've done since turning pro has led me to become a better player,” Hovland said.

Viktor Hovland on when to trust data vs. instinct

“I got a longer driver, I fastened my backswing, I got a little bit stronger in the gym, I started doing AimPoint on greens, whatever it might be, like every single thing that I've done has helped me to play better golf. So I don't think I need to completely throw the baby out with the bath water, but definitely have to maybe spend a little bit more time and make sure that if I'm going to go in a different direction it's maybe a little bit more planned out, or need more data supporting that decision. But, yeah, probably, I mean, the classic saying, 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it.' I mean, you need a very good and valid reason to try to change something if it's already working, but I do kind of think my track record speaks for itself.”

It’s the fine edge of golf. Every player tries to improve, but knowing when to stop innovating is hard. Xander Schauffele spent the last five years living inside the top 10 of the Official World Golf Ranking, yet he brought on new coach Chris Como and chased speed gains, hoping to improve. It translated into his first major. Meanwhile, Billy Horschel tried to find marginal improvements after 2022, which translated into his worst season on TOUR in recent memory in 2023. The pursuit of innovation can go both ways.

Hovland has always been a tinkerer. He learned the golf swing by watching YouTube videos and only found Mayo through social media videos. Innovation is inherent in his DNA, and pursuing more of it also caused his short-lived downfall earlier this year.

Muirfield Village won’t look so scary if Hovland's found the right formula.

Viktor Hovland on being patient with his game

2. Final chance for U.S. Open spot

The following players are in the field at the Memorial but NOT in the field at the U.S. Open and could qualify with a strong finish (likely a victory) this week.

  • Ben Griffin – 70th (in the OWGR)
  • Lee Hodges – 75th
  • Davis Riley – 78th
  • Andrew Putnam – 79th
  • Patrick Rodgers – 87th

Notably, Adam Scott, No. 60 in the OWGR, is not in the Memorial field. Scott lost in a playoff to Cameron Davis to earn a U.S. Open spot during Final Qualifying on Monday. Scott is in danger of snapping his streak of 91 consecutive major championship appearances. His hopes aren’t dashed, though he will need nearly every player below him in the rankings to struggle at Muirfield Village.

Griffin, Putnam and Rodgers failed to qualify through Final Qualifying, while Hodges and Riley withdrew ahead of The Longest Day in Golf.

“I decided to withdraw from Canada, just to take a week of rest to get prepared for (Memorial),” Riley said. “Then obviously I was doing the U.S. Open qualifier in Canada the Monday after, and I just felt like it would be pretty taxing to go all the way up to Canada just for a 36-hole event and then come down here.

“There is still a way for me, I don't know exactly what I've got to finish, but there is a way, if I have a well enough finish this week, to get into next week, so I was just kind of putting all my eggs in the basket that route.”

3. Is Jackson Koivun the next college star?

The hottest golfer in the Memorial field is not Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele or Rory McIlroy. It’s Auburn freshman Jackson Koivun who will make his PGA TOUR debut this week.

Koivun is playing the Memorial on a sponsor exemption earned by winning the Jack Nicklaus Award, given by the Golf Coaches Association of America to the player of the year. It’s just the latest in a prestigious list of accolades. Koivun is the only golfer in NCAA history to win the Nicklaus Award, Ben Hogan Award, Haskins Award and Phil Mickelson Outstanding Freshman Award in the same season.

And he was the central piece in Auburn winning its first national championship last week. Koivun earned the clinching point in his semifinal match, which went to extra holes. Then he earned Auburn’s first point in the national championship against Florida State. Koivun won twice in his freshman season, including the SEC Championship. He finished in the top 10 in 12 of his 13 stroke-play starts and had the lowest adjusted scoring average (67.3) in Division I.

Koivun has already amassed 13 PGA TOUR University Accelerated points and will earn two more this summer when Christo Lamprecht and Michael Thorbjornsen make their pro debut and are removed from the World Amateur Golf Ranking. Koivun could earn a PGA TOUR card before his sophomore year, and he appears destined to become the second golfer to earn TOUR status through the Accelerated program, joining Gordon Sargent.

Koivun has checked every box of a young phenom. His performance at Memorial could launch him to even higher heights.

Jackson Koivun on if college players can compete on TOUR

4. Trending into Pinehurst?

That Xander Schauffele played well at the PGA Championship was no surprise, given his performance the week prior. He finished second at the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte before heading West to Louisville and claiming his maiden major championship.

Will a similar story emerge over the next two weeks? A Signature Event again precedes a major, with the Memorial followed by the U.S. Open at Pinehurst next week. Could someone parlay a standout performance at Muirfield into an equally impressive showing at Pinehurst? That seems likely. So, who could those players be? Here are the 10 top performers, using Strokes Gained data, over the last 30 days.

1. Xander Schauffele 2. Rory McIlroy 3. Scottie Scheffler 4. Collin Morikawa 5. Viktor Hovland 6. Keegan Bradley 7. Byeong Hun-An 8. Corey Conners 9. Justin Thomas 10. Russell Henley

5. A subtle but significant tweak to the 16th hole

The famous par-3 16th hole will look different for this year’s tournament. Nicklaus and the tournament team moved the tee box 25 yards to the right, allowing golfers to play the hole up through the front of the green instead of over the pond that hugs the left side of the hole. Nicklaus also removed one of the front-right bunkers and added depth to another bunker.

“It definitely looks different, a little wider on the right side,” Hovland said after playing the back nine on Tuesday. “You're going to see a lot of guys in that right bunker. I think for the back right pin, that's a very tough bunker shot. Obviously all the right pins are going to be pretty tough. Yeah, it's still a hard hole, but at least now it feels like with the angle, you can hit a good shot and kind of run it on or around the green, so I think it's good.”

Billy Horschel said he likes the changes and expects the hole to play a bit easier but much more fairly. The 16th played as the second-hardest hole at the Memorial last year, yielding only 21 total birdies, the fewest of any hole. That should increase, Horschel predicted, though he also expects more balls to end up in the water left of the green.
