Macos mojave, apple releases safari 14.1.2 for macos catalina and mojave with security improvements.

Avatar for Filipe Espósito

Apple today quietly released an updated version of Safari for users running versions of macOS prior to macOS Big Sur 11. Safari 14.1.2 is now available for macOS Catalina and macOS Mojave with security improvements and bug fixes.

The update follows the release of iOS 14.7 and watchOS 7.6 , which were made available to the public earlier today. The final builds of macOS Big Sur 11.5 and iPadOS 14.7 are yet to be released. However, what exactly these updates bring in terms of security improvements is unknown at this time.

On its security webpage , Apple only mentions that more details about today’s updates will be available soon. Earlier this year, Apple introduced Safari 14.1 for macOS Catalina and macOS Mojave , which fixed a serious exploit in WebKit that had been used to execute arbitrary code on a device without authorization.

Presumably another security breach in WebKit has been patched with the latest versions of iOS and macOS, and now Apple is releasing the same patch for Mac users who cannot update to macOS Big Sur. The company suggests that more details will be revealed after an investigation to confirm that the security update works.

For the protection of our customers, Apple doesn’t disclose, discuss, or confirm security issues until an investigation has occurred and patches or releases are generally available.

You can update Safari by going to the Software Update menu in the System Preferences app on your Mac.

New version of safari 14.1.2 for macos mojave and catalina.

July 26, 2021 Matt Mills News , Software 0

New version of Safari 14.1.2 for macOS Mojave and Catalina

Although we are now close to receiving all the news about macOS Monterey, the truth is that there are many Macs that not only will not be compatible with this new version, but they are not compatible with the current one from Big Sur. Apple has not forgotten the users who have one of those Macs and has released a browser update that should be updated due to the news it brings.

Apple Releases “Obsolete” Safari 14.1.2 for Macs

Yesterday there were software releases by Apple with iOS 14.7, watchOS 7.6 and tvOS 14.7. What appears to be the final beta of macOS 11.5 was also released. However, there was a release that made no headlines and yet is vitally important to those who own one of these computers:

  • MacBook Air (2012)
  • MacBook Pro (2012 and early 2013)
  • iMac (2012 and 2013)

We previously put the quotation marks to “obsolete” because actually these Macs continue to work perfectly, they are just not compatible with versions equal to or later than macOS 11. These were left in macOS Mojave or macOS Catalina. However, Apple has not forgotten about them and has released the aforementioned version of Safari 14.1.2.

mac de 2012

How to upgrade and why

It is taken for granted that when a Mac is no longer compatible with new versions of software, it will no longer be able to enjoy visual and functional novelties that are being introduced. However, it is common for Apple to launch complementary updates for several years later for them with the aim that they remain safe equipment, understanding that perhaps not all users can afford to buy one of the new computers.

In this case, a system update has not been launched as such, but the Safari browser. However, the way to proceed to update to version 14.1.2 of Safari is the same as when updating the whole system. If you have one of those computers mentioned above you should go to System Preferences> Software Update and there you will find this version of the browser ready for download and subsequent installation. You will likely have to have the application closed and restart once it completes.

You should know that if you have a version prior to macOS Mojave, you probably won’t find this Safari update. That is why you must first update to the latest version of the system that you have available and then the browser version will appear (if it does not install itself when updating the Mac completely).

The reason why we indicate that it is important to update is to bring important security patches that will keep it safe to navigate through it. Apple did not detail exactly what type of specific bugs this version corrects, but considering that it does not usually launch these updates if there are no major errors, it seems that very relevant security problems must have been detected.

Troubleshooting, safari 14.1 released for macos mojave & catalina with security fix.

Safari for Mac

Apple has released Safari 14.1 for MacOS Catalina and macOS Mojave. It is recommended for all users of Catalina and Mojave to install the update.

The Safari 14.1 release features important security updates for WebKit and the Safari web browser in macOS Mojave (10.14.6) and macOS Catalina (10.15.7), containing the same patches that were included in macOS Big Sur 11.3.1 .

Mac users running macOS Catalina or macOS Mojave can find Safari 14.1 available to download now from the Software Update preference panel, accessible via  Apple menu > System Preferences.

The same WebKit security issue addressed by Safari 14.1 was also patched on other Apple devices with iOS 14.5.1, iPadOS 14.5.1, iOS 12.5.3, watchOS 7.4.1, and macOS Big Sur 11.3.1.

Comments About Safari 14.1.2

Notable replies.

Safari is notoriously slow on my computer. This version seems glacial. Firefox for example works normally on same websites

It’s not available only via software update – you can download it directly from Apple. For example, the Mojave updater: http://swcdn.apple.com/content/downloads/44/05/071-47373-A_9A3CD8EVNY/jpiompzkddnter5tm1094w57tg63ok0axz/Safari14.1.2MojaveAuto.pkg

Interesting! Where did you find the link for that direct download?

Sort of an LOL comment, links are here: https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/15675/apple-safari

Fascinating! I wouldn’t bet on that link working forever, although perhaps MacUpdate has ways of detecting if it breaks. Apple almost certainly wouldn’t be happy about that link being published if they knew. If nothing else, it’s a security concern if people think they can download Safari from any source other than Software Update.

On the other hand, many other downloads are publicly available at Apple - Support - Downloads such as the June 2nd Catalina security update and even entire MacOSes. I’m probably missing something, but since the Safari updates are being downloaded from Apple servers I’m not sure why it’s an issue to circumvent the Software update mechanism. I realize some updates are computer specific but many are not. In that case I’d much rather download an update once and apply it to multiple computers than download it onto every one.

That Support Downloads page used to have just about everything. Nowadays it only really seems to get security updates—nothing else has been posted there this year. The last Safari version posted there was from 2015.

Safari 14.1.2 Catalina

I currently have MacOS 10.15.7 Catalina with Safari 13.1.3. I want to update to Safari 14.1.2 which is the last release of Safari 14. Software update gives me the option of Safari 15.6.1, but I have no interest in Safari 15. I also do not want to update to MacOS 11 Big Sur.

I found a version of Safari 14.1.2 for Mojave here: https://swscan.apple.com/content/catalogs/others/index-10.15seed-10.15-10.14-10.13-10.12-10.11-10.10-10.9-mountainlion-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog.gz

This Mojave version does not work for Catalina. The install fails. The Catalina version on the same site is 15.6.1. I know 14.1.2 was offered for Catalina in the past, but I am struggling to find a copy of this version. Could someone point me in the right direction to find this download?

The app store still offers Mojave for download. Would I be able to downgrade to Mojave via the app store, install the Safari update and then upgrade back to Catalina?

Apple Launches Safari 14.1 With a Security Fix for Older Macs

Apple's also fixed these WebKit security breaches for users running iOS 14 and macOS Big Sur.

That's because the new Safari 14.1 patches WebKit vulnerabilities that permit bad actors to execute rogue code on your computer without user consent. WebKit is a layout engine used by Apple's own Safari browser and all third-party browsers on the iPhone and iPad.

The flaws are detailed in a support document on Apple's website .

There are three major vulnerabilities that Safari 14.1 patches, spanning WebKit, WebKit Storage, and WebKit RTC. In WebKit, Apple has addressed an input validation issue with improved input validation. This vulnerability let attackers craft malicious web content which could result in a cross-site scripting attack. This is a technique which enables malicious people to inject client-side scripts into web pages viewed by other users.

The WebKit Storage flaw allowed hackers to execute arbitrary code on a user’s device without consent via maliciously crafted web content. According to the company, "a use after free issue was addressed with improved memory management" in WebKit Storage.

The company has acknowledged that this particular flaw may have been actively exploited in the wild. Therefore, it's definitely a good idea to update to Safari 14.1 on your older Mac running the macOS Mojave or Catalina software. To do so, launch the System Preferences app and choose Software Update from the System Preferences window, then follow the onscreen instructions to download and install Safari 14.1.

Are Other Apple Devices at Risk?

The company has recently fixed WebKit security breaches on its other platforms. With the release of iOS and iPadOS 14.5.1, Apple patched the WebKit flaws on the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad . On the Mac, the same issues were addressed with macOS Bug Sur 11.3.1.

And last but not least, Apple has also released iOS 12.5.3 which patches the WebKit flaws on older devices that are incompatible with the latest iOS 14 software, including the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6, iPad Air, iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3, and sixth-generation iPod touch.

Unless you can find a copy of Safari v14.x somewhere or have a clone saved to HDD or SSD, reloading the OS is the only way? Better yet, find a different browser. I've been on Brave the last few weeks and like it a lot.

Following. Safari 15 looks like the best that 1995 windows interface design could pull off. WTH. Who's (asleep) at the interface design wheel at Apple nowadays?

MacRumorUser78

I have 14.1 on TimeMachine, but can't use it to replace 15. Finder won't allow Safari 15 to be deleted either. I have 14 on another disk. I'd rather not change since iCloud "sharing" of pages is handy. And Bookmarks are saved for all my devices.

  • Oct 7, 2021

I was able to downgrade from Safari 15 to Safari 14.1.2 by downloading and installing the full 12.6 GB macOS Big Sur installer from the Mac App Store. Be careful because Apple will offer you the Safari 15 update if you have Check for Updates turned on in System Preferences. Just uncheck the box to make sure you don't reinstall Safari 15. Update: After going back to 14.1.2 I think I will avoid upgrading to macOS Monterey just to avoid being forced to use Safari 15.

I don't mind how Safari 15 looks, or the UI refinements. But almost every website seems to trigger the warning a tab is using too many resources and was reloaded. I can't load user comments on some websites without the page reloading immediately, thus wiping out the comments I was trying to read. All other browsers I test have none of these issues (Firefox, Chrome, Edge, Brave). Safari 15 seems to behave/perform as if my system has 1GB of RAM. It's absolute trash, in my opinion, in its current state. A horrible, horrible user experience.

If I recall correctly, Safari 14 was supplied as part of OS 11.6 while Safari 15 is installed 'on top'. It should therefore be possible to remove the Safari 15 files from the Data volume, causing the OS to fall back to the System volume. As for how to do this though, not a clue.

Installed Safari 15.1 beta 2. YouTube still crashing. Safari 14 worked perfectly. Don't remember a single crash. What's notable Safari 15 crashed one or two times even when I tried to bookmark www.apple.com via cmd + D. Rant incoming: Honestly, this feels like a joke. Safari 15.0 is a stable and final version (should be at least). It even installs automatically if your set your Mac to update on auto. Yet, open YouTube -> cmd + D = crash. I mean surely somebody at Apple noticed this. FWIW, you can downgrade to Safari 14. You just have to download +12GB macOS Big Sur installer and basically reinstall the whole OS. Like why the heck I can't download Safari14.dmg and just downgrade? Or it's been a couple weeks since release Safari 15 and even the latest beta still hasn't fixed this bug (though I heard Developer Preview is working OK). If this was Chrome/Edge/Firefox I think they would have fixed this bug by now. Yeah, I know, it's not a big deal. I bought +1000USD dollar laptop which works perfectly and complain about a bug which (hopefully) will be fixed in month or two. But Apple, if you release a Safari update which crashes your browser all the time on one of the most popular websites just give us an easy option to downgrade (without reinstalling the whole OS) at least. It's not that hard is it? End of rant.

Create a USB installer for Catalina. Install Catalina to an external drive. Boot Catalina once you set it up. You may have to download the Safari installer (v15) from Apple as part of the upgrade process. There you have it. A lot of hoops to jump through, yes, but you'll end up getting what you are looking for.

What you need to know

  • Apple has released Safari 14.1.2 for macOS Catalina and macOS Mojave.
  • Apple says that it is a security update but has not specified what it is for.

Apple is bringing yet another security update to Safari users still on macOS Catalina and macOS Mojave.

The company has released Safari 14.1.2 to macOS Catalina and macOS Mojave. Apple says that the update is focused on security per the Apple Support website, but has not specified exactly what the security update is for. It says that the details of the release will be "available soon."

This is the second security update to Safari for macOS Catalina and macOS Mojave users in 2021. Back in May, Apple released Safari 14.1 that addressed a security issue with WebKit.

WebKitAvailable for: macOS Catalina and macOS MojaveImpact: Processing maliciously crafted web content may lead to arbitrary code execution. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited.Description: A memory corruption issue was addressed with improved state management.CVE-2021-30665: yangkang (@dnpushme)&zerokeeper&bianliang of 360 ATAWebKitAvailable for: macOS Catalina and macOS MojaveImpact: Processing maliciously crafted web content may lead to arbitrary code execution. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited.Description: An integer overflow was addressed with improved input validation.CVE-2021-30663: an anonymous researcher

Apple has had a lot going on with Safari lately. The company recently rolled back some of the radical design changes it had made to the browser in iOS 15 and macOS Monterey after beta testers complained about some of the changes, especially with the tabs experience.

Man Claims to Have Caught 'Time Traveler' Using His Shed in Wild Video

Lions have sex on top of safari truck full of people, wild video, roaring sex lions get busy on top of safari truck ... tourists take it all in.

A couple of lions felt the love so much that they started banging on top of a tourist safari truck ... and the people inside certainly got an eyeful and then some.

A group of tourists partaking in a South African safari were recently left stunned as 2 randy big cats made themselves at home atop their vehicle.

The male lion is seen mounting a resting female lion ... confirming their boinking session with a couple of growls. The jeep noticeably shakes from side to side as they do it ... sparking laughter and gasps from the tourists seated below.

The lions' intimacy didn't last too long ... with the lioness lying tired to the side as the king of the jungle eventually disconnected.

While the encounter may have given some tourists the ick on the spot ... it's significantly less scary than the African elephant attack from earlier this month -- which ended in a death.

No one died here ... just a couple of kitties getting laid!
