NOTE:  Lanao  del Sur is different from Lanao del Norte.

Along the coast of Mindanao Island in the Philippines, the province of Lanao del Norte is the industrial center of the Mindanao region. The area, which provides most of the region’s power through hydroelectric plants, is also an agricultural center, particularly in the cultivation of rice, coconut and aquaculture products. But Lanao del Norte is also an area that tourists seek out for its natural beauty. While the beaches here are surpassed by others in the Philippines, visitors can find inland places to see in this tiny region.  Read More:   http://traveltips.usatoday.com/tourist-spots-lanao-del-norte-philippines-62281.html

Agus River is a river that flows for 36.5 kilometers (22.7 mi) from Lanao Lake to Iligan Bay, Philippines. It cuts through the provinces of Lanao del Sur and Lanao del Norte. Settlements along the banks of the river include the City of Marawi, the Municipality of Linamon and the City of Iligan. It separates into two channels as it drains to Iligan Bay; one going over the Maria Cristina Falls while the other supplies the Tinago Falls. The river descends for about 2,200 feet (670 m) from its source as it flows for 21 miles (34 km) before draining to the sea. The river is relatively shallow as it is only 4 feet (1.2 m) deep in some areas. The Agus River’s watershed spans about 11,320.00 hectares. In 1992, the National Power Corporation financed the reforestation of the Lake Lanao-Agus River watershed, planting over 1500 hectares of Acacia mangium , Durio zibethinus and other indigenous trees. It has a discharge of about 10 cubic metres per second (350 cu ft/s) and flows from a narrow depression off the northwestern rim of the lake and flows over a basalt rock formation. The canyon carved by the river suggests a short erosional period.  Read More:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agus_River

Cathedral Falls

famous tourist spots in lanao del norte

Cathedral Falls is easy to describe. It is because of its stone formation around the waterfalls, it resembles that of a Cathedral’s pillars that is why it was named Cathedral Falls. The stones are like the huge posts of a Cathedral, though they come in different shapes. It is also the boundary of the two Barangays of Kapatagan namely Barangay Cathedral Falls and Barangay Waterfalls.

I can say that Cathedral Falls is long been open to everybody however we can still say it is still a rare find by many. There are certain reasons making it not that attractive to tourists. One reason maybe, most of the tourists prefer to visit places not only for the view but for the activities around. For now, the local government is planning on the development of Cathedral Falls thereby making it attractive to tourists.  Read More:  http://www.findinghenru.com/cathedral-falls/

Dodiongan Falls

famous tourist spots in lanao del norte

The trail to Dodiongan Falls is pretty easy to negotiate; there were no steep hills to trek and no rocky boulders to climb and hop through. The only problem we faced, or at least the members of the group who were wearing trekking shoes, were the numerous river crossings we have to traverse.  The water’s not really that deep; most don’t even reach our knees. The problem though is we have to take off our shoes every time we have to cross the stream that runs from the Dodiongan’s basin. Being the lazy person that I am, I forewent the arduous task of removing my shoes and putting them on again, I simply waded through, wet socks and all.  Read More:  https://www.lakadpilipinas.com/2013/10/dodiongan-falls-iligan-city.html

Hindang Falls

famous tourist spots in lanao del norte

Hindang Falls is approximately 20km from the city proper and is accessible through Brgy. Hindang. The trail going to Hindang Falls is better than Tinago Falls. It was short with a 7-10mins trek and manageable trail. It also brings in a surprise factor as the trail weaves it’s way to a secluded part of the mountain and takes you to a small opening where Hindang Falls calmly sits.

The basin of the waterfall is quite wide enough for around 50 people to swim. The floor gets deeper towards the waterfall that I could not reach the bottom. I’m 163 cm by the way. The drop is narrow but is a bit concentrated and it stands around 15 ft tall. The water surely is cold, that’s how magical every waterfall is, but it’s not as icy as Tinago Falls and Mimbalut Falls (also in Iligan City).  Read More:  http://exploreiligan.blogspot.com/2011/08/waterfalls-paradise-more-beautiful.html

Kalubihon Falls

famous tourist spots in lanao del norte

Beneath that wall is a shyly gaping mouth hole. Hardly a cave. More like a small cavern of limestone walls filled with water. You have to crouch to reach the deep portion and swim towards the opening at the end. Fortunately, everyone in the group was up for it that it did not bother them how deep the water was. Or if the cavern-like passage had an eerie feel to it. It was dark, and the only light that you could make out is the one that slips from the opening at the other end. Should you not know how to swim, you can hold on to the stone walls near the opening.  Read More:  https://www.pinaytravelista.com/iligan-city-kalubihon-falls/

Limunsudan Falls

famous tourist spots in lanao del norte

Limunsudan Falls is a two-tiered waterfall situated in Sitio Limunsudan, Brgy. Rogongan, Iligan City. It is the second highest waterfall in the Philippines next to Aliwagwag Falls of Davao Oriental.  The waterfall has a massive water drop of 870 feet with the lower part cascades higher than the Maria Cristina Falls.

It is just one of the many spectacular waterfalls that get little media attention. The reason for their seclusion is that they are hard to access or hidden upon several rainforest or watershed in topographic areas. Upon reaching one of these hidden waterfalls of Iligan, you will be amazed by its wonderful view.  Read More:  https://www.vigattintourism.com/tourism/articles/Lanao-del-Nortes-Breathtaking-Limunsundan-Falls

Mimbalut Falls

famous tourist spots in lanao del norte

Mimbalot Falls or some spelled it as Mimbalut falls, perhaps because this is the name that has been registered in google map. Mimbalot Falls may not look like majestic comparing it to Maria Cristina Falls and Tinago Falls, but its innate beauty where an endless water rushing from the upper side, and paving its way to the rocks downstream is very calming and stunning, that would definitely leave you in awe.

Moreover, it is located in Brgy. Buru-un, Iligan City, Lanao Del Norte, and it is approximately eleven (11) kilometers drive away from the city proper, and less than one (1) kilometer from the National Highway, or the drop off area going to the Falls. And, this is perhaps the reason why Mimbalot Falls has never failed to attract visitors because it is really accessible. Additionally, it owns an estimated height of around 90 feet of water drop and 18 feet wide facade, that owns a different perfect spot for water massage because of huge rocks around the place. Likewise, because of these huge rocks, you wouldn’t be seeing deep catching basin like any other waterfalls that you have been to. Perchance, this is what makes Mimbalot falls stands unique amongst the other waterfalls in the Philippines.  Read More:  https://thelittlelai.com/2019/05/21/mimbalot-falls-the-most-accessible-waterfall-in-iligan-city-lanao-del-norte-and-part-of-iligans-tourism-triangle/

Mt. Agad-Agad

famous tourist spots in lanao del norte

Mt. Agad-Agad is located in Barangay Puga-an, Iligan City, Lanao del Norte with an estimated height of 1,600 feet above sea level. It is quite known to every mountain hikers and other adventurers since it is very accessible and good for an overnight camping.

Before reaching the foot of the mountain, we crossed the barangay’s hanging bridge which literally made my world spinning like crazy. I kept on capturing pictures even though it was extremely shaky. It was raining the night before we had our trekking so it was a bit slippery and the leaves were still wet. It was a good idea that I wore jogging pants and a bad idea for wearing a sweater with an inner sleeveless cloth.

Along the way, I heard the sound of falling water and minutes later, I saw a mini waterfall. We couldn’t go down to see it clearly, however, I was able to see it in a bird’s eye view. The water is crystal clear though it’s not good enough for a big splash and dip.  Read More:  https://www.bitlanders.com/blogs/trekking-experience-in-mount-agad-agad/6626959

Lanao del Norte | Tourist Spots, Festivals, and more

Dubbed as the Land of Beauty and Bounty , the province of Lanao del Norte is a place not to miss. It is home to several exciting places and underrated festivals with authentic blend of rich culture and history.

The province of Lanao del Norte is accessible from the capital – Manila by air through Laguindingan, Ozamiz and Pagadian Airports; through sea by Iligan City and Ozamiz City ports. On the other hand, buses such as Rural Transit and Super 5 and other means of transportation are also regularly traveling back and forth from Cagayan de Oro passing through Iligan, the province of Lanao to the southern most part of Mindanao. It is also accessible from Cotabato via Marawi City or through Sultan Naga Dimaporo route.

How to get here

The province is bounded by Iligan, in the north, Lanao del Sur and the province of Bukidnon in the east, to the southwest are Illana Bay and the Celebes Sea; and Zamboanga del Sur and Panguil Bay to the west. The term Lanao is derived from a Maranao word “Ranao” which means a body of water, of which “Maranao” means “Lake Dweller.” The Maranaos are natives of the place, a Malay-Arabic descent occupying the lands around Lake Lanao, situated at the central part of Lanao del Sur. Lanao applies to the entire area before its division.

It has a total population of 1,010,563 individuals encompassing the estimated total number of 90, 092 households of which a majority or 69% are Christians and 31% are Maranao. Lanao province has a total land area of 382, 478.66 hectares or 3, 692 sq. kms. Forty percent of the total land area are plains that is why most of their populations are farmers and a considerable percent are fishermen. The municipality of Tubod is the present capital town of the province upon passing Republic Act No. 9724 separating the City of Iligan its former capital city from the 18 Legislative District of the province of Lanao del Norte to constitute the Lone Legislative District of the City of Iligan. At present, Lanao del Norte despite its colorful past is considered to be the frontier of peace in the northern Mindanao region. Why? Because even if the province is comprised of 22 municipalities (462 Barangays) namely: Bacolod, Balo-i, Baroy, Kapatagan, Kauswagan, Lala, Linamon, Magsaysay, Maigo, Matungao, Munai, Nunungan, Pantao Ragat, Pantar, Poona Piagapo, Salvador, Sapad, Sultan Naga Dimaporo (Karomatan), Tagoloan, Tangkal and Tubod with diverse culture and religion, still peace and unity prevails.

The province is known from its breath-taking caves and waterfalls such as Sta. Cruz Falls, Cathedral Falls and the famous Tinago Falls, located in the municipality of Linamon (also claimed by Iligan as it is in the boundary between the city and the municipality of Linamon). However, Lanao del Norte is more than that. Here are some of the best tourist sites you shouldn’t miss when in Lanao.

Where to go

Pikalawag Beach

This underrated beach is considered by locals as a vibrant place for relaxation. It is located in the municipality of Sultan Naga Dimaporo with fine sand and rich underwater resources. Several fun activities such as a boat ride around the lake, swan pedal boating, aqua-cycling, kayaking and many more. Locals come and visit this place during special occasions, like birthdays, family picnics, and fishing. Make sure to wear life jacket if you decides to swim or whenever engaging the lakes amenities.

Cathedral Falls

It is named after the marvelous rock formation surrounding the falls resembling like a cathedral. What’s good thing about Cathedral Falls is its accessibility. Unlike before, you can not get near the falls during rainy days, because of floods as visitors needs to cross the stream to see its beauty. Now, new paved road has been opened which go directly to its view-deck allowing tourist to marvel its beauty rain or shine.

Provincial Ceramic Center

Mineral resources both metallic and non-metallic are known to be found in some municipalities. Clay is abundant in the municipalities of Baroy and Tubod allowing their Provincial Ceramic Center to enjoy an unlimited supply. If you love and enjoy learning how to make pots, this good place for you.

  Dapit-alim

Located in Tubod/Kolambugan, nestled in 51/2 hectares of land with 243 steps going up overlooking the blue waters of Panguil Bay and fronting the majestic Mt. Malindang. It is a place for retreat, a center for prayer, reconciliation and holistic healing, a healing of our relations to God, His other creations and our fellows.

Pagayawan Falls

Locals refers it as “mini waterfalls” located at Pagayawan, Bacolod, Lanao del Norte, but upon getting near to the view-deck and gazing the falls itself, it is actually and literally breath-taking! The falls is a tributary falls cascading into a bed of volcanic rocks which is a potential source of power.

  Kauswagan Boardwalk

Just like any boardwalks, the place is much enjoyed early in the morning and late afternoon. The best thing about these hours are the sunset and sunrise which is just soothing and relaxing both mentally and physically.

The plebiscite actually determines the fate of 6 towns namely; Tagoloan, Balo-i, Pantar, Munai, Tangcal, and Nunungan who initially agreed to be included in the embattled Bangsamoro Basic Law during the plebiscite in 2001. With BBL the present Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao will be demolished and the new BBL now Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL) which was passed into law and signed by President Duterte which will establish a new autonomous region. BBL is the result of the long and tedious peace negotiations between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front whom at the same time responsible for the creation of ARMM in the year 1996 under the leadership of Nur Misuari.

The province is not actually against the BOL. It is actually campaigning against the inclusion of the aforementioned 6 municipalities. It is grounded on five valid (bloggers’ viewpoint) reasons:

  • First, the province as we can see is already enjoying a constant peace. This is evident on how the towns in this province prosper all throughout the years. The people of Lanao del Norte want to send this message that regardless of religion each one of them are united even felt stronger when they are working together.
  • Secondly, the province argued that BBL does not provide or there is no provision that provides the creation of new local government unit.
  • The aforementioned towns historically serves as the buffer-zone for the people dwelling in the low lands. Historically, people who have bad intentions who wants to penetrate to the more populated towns in the valleys of the province requires them to pass through these town in question. With the control of these towns resides on the province of Lanao del Norte it was easier for them to quell the bad elements.
  • The province’s Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA) will diminish. We all know that the access and distribution of this funds is calculated based on land area and number of populations. With 6 towns separating from the province this would mean that a considerable land area and number of population will be taken away which means a lower IRA for the province.
  • The people of Lanao del Norte can not allow its parts to be removed. Like a human body, each municipalities are considered as its parts. For centuries, it functions well and is dependent on each other. It would be hard to take them apart, crippling through menacing consequences.

Final Thoughts

Nevertheless, the final say lay to the hands of the people of Lanao del Norte. It is no wonder that this single vote requires them to evaluate the pros and cons of their decisions thoroughly. Given the present order, it would be prudent that before these six towns should be included with the new autonomous region by virtue of BOL. If these towns really wanted to be included after the plebiscite, why not give enough time (transition period of 5 to 10 years) to the present ARMM to be demolished and establish itself first as the new autonomous region by virtue of BOL. When time proves that this new order is actually working soundly, then that is the time we start the process of inclusion of the aforementioned territories. However this should only applies to the towns who really voted yes for the inclusion during the plebiscite. We should not haste to decide of including the six towns of a new system that would threaten the existing peace and order of the province.

Experience Lanao del Norte - The Land of Beauty and Bounty

Lanao del Norte is a province of the Philippines located in the Northern Mindanao region. Its capital is Tubod. The province borders Lanao del Sur to the southeast, Zamboanga del Sur to the west, Illana Bay to the southwest, Iligan Bay to the north, Iligan City to the northeast, and is separated from Misamis Occidental by Panguil Bay to the northwest.

The Provincial Government of Lanao del Norte has been exerting its best effort to uplift the quality of life of the people in the rural and urban areas in the province through the promotion of Integrated Agriculture and Economics Tourism Development Programs. The primary goal of the development plan is to create conditions that will facilitate and accelerate economic word of the province. One of the conditions identified is to promote the tourism industry that would act as a catalyst for the development of trade and other economic interactions between outlying municipalities in the province and its neighboring provinces as well.

The province prides itself as a major contributor to the overall development of Mindanao. It hosts three of the seven Agus Hydropower Plants which generates 80% of the Mindanao power grid. There are more than 70,000 hectares of coconut land found in Lanao del Norte, and is the second largest producer of copra in the region. Other major products include rice, fruits, corn, and aquaculture products.

Republic Act No. 2228 divided Lanao in to two provinces, giving birth to Lanao del Norte and Lanao del Sur. The new province was inaugurated on July 4, 1959, making Iligan City as the capital. Salvador T. Lluch was the first Governor of Lanao del Norte. Second was Mohammad Ali Dimaporo, from January 1960 to September 1965 when Governor Dimaporo ran and won the congressional seat of the province. By operation of the law of succession, Vice Governor Arsenio A. Quibranza became the third Provincial Chief Executive of the province. By the mandate of the inhabitants, Governor Quibranza was elected Governor in 1967 and almost unanimously re-elected in 1971 and again in 1980.

In 1977, President Ferdinand E. Marcos signed Resolution No. 805 series of 1977 of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (Parliamentary Bill No. 586) sponsored by Assemblyman Abdullah D. Dimaporo, into Presidential Decree 181 transferring the province's capital from Iligan City to the municipality of Tubod.

In October 1984, inaugural ceremonies were held to celebrate the occasion of the transfer of the Provincial Capitol from Poblacion, Tubod to the Don Mariano Marcos Government Center (now Governor Arsenio A. Quibranza Provincial Government Center) at Pigcarangan, Tubod, Lanao del Norte.

By virtue of the power and impact of the People’s Power Revolution at Edsa, Manila on February 25, 1986, local government all over the Philippines changed the political atmosphere overnight. Lanao del Norte became one among the many provinces affected by the sudden changes brought by the “Snap Election” on February 1986. Local heads of offices and employees particularly those holding political positions were destabilized but with the installation of President Corazon Aquino as president, OIC Atty. Francisco L. Abalos became the appointed governor of the province on March 3, 1986. On February 2, 1988, Atty. Abalos was elected as governor of the province.

In the Synchronized National Election of May 11, 1992, Congressman Abdullah D. Dimaporo, a legislator and economist, was elected Provincial Governor. The Provincial government embarked on a comprehensive planning and set the groundwork for the development of the province

In the 1998 national and local elections, Imelda Quibranza-Dimaporo, wife of Governor Abdullah. D. Dimaporo was elected as Provincial Governor. Despite the outbreak of the conflict of the MILF and the Philippine Army in Kauswagan last March 2000, through the provincial government's effort, peace and order was restored in the province.

The Provincial Government was also able to bring the province into the limelight with full media coverage, through the hosting of the First Mindanao Friendship Games at the Mindanao Civic Center in Tubod on November 11–15, 2001. Participants came from all over Mindanao representing the various LGUs in the island. The event was opened by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
