Flashback: Tina Turner Plays the Final Encore of Her Last Concert

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Eighty years ago today, Anne Mae Bullock was born in Nutbush, Tennessee. The daughter of a poor farm worker, Bullock moved around the country a lot in her early years, eventually winding up in St. Louis where she met a charismatic bandleader named Ike Turner in 1957. He invited her to join his group, changed her name to Tina, and eventually married her.

The horrific physical and emotional abuse she endured during her two-decade relationship with Ike has been documented in several books and the 1993 biopic What’s Love Got to Do With It. But as Rob Sheffield points out in his essay commemorating her 80th birthday , she managed to launch an incredible solo career in the Eighties. Against all odds, she enjoyed enormous success even though she was a good two decades older than most everyone else in the pop world.

Tina Turner ‘s tours after the release of Private Dancer in 1984 packed stadiums all across the world, especially in Europe. She launched a farewell tour in 2000 that truly seemed like the end of her live career, but in 2008 she went back out at the age of 69 to celebrate her 50th anniversary in music. It was a show that would have exhausted someone half her age, but Turner got through 90 shows and amazed every single night.

The run wrapped up May 5th, 2009, at the Sheffield Arena in Sheffield, England. Like every show on the tour, that concert featured a cross-section of songs from her entire career, including “Proud Mary,” “River Deep, Mountain High,” “Goldeneye,” and “Private Dancer.” She finished off the night with the relatively obscure “Be Tender With Me Baby” from her 1990 LP Foreign Affair. Here’s video of the big moment captured by a fan in the audience.

In the years following this tour, Turner survived a brutal bout of intestinal cancer and kidney failure. She survived the latter ailment because her husband, Erwin Bach, gave her one of his kidneys, and she’s currently thriving. Another tour, however, remains very hard to imagine. But with everything this woman has survived, it’s impossible to totally rule it out. If anyone on this planet can strap on high heels in their eighties and hit the road, it’s her.

Foreign affair farewell tour 1989/1990.

The tour is notable as Tina Turner's only tour to not reach North America. Since the tour was considered a farewell tour (at that time), Tina Turner wanted to exclusively tour Europe to thank her fans for supporting her career after she left The Revue. The tour also marks Tina Turner's final performances in Italy. The tour was advertised as a "farewell" tour as Tina Turner began to concentrate on potential acting roles. During an interview, Tina Turner stated,

"I've always thought this would be the final one but I must admit I now have mixed feelings. I'm the first woman to fill all these stadiums and the feeling from all those fans night after night was fantastic. I don't want to close that door completely. I'm going away for about a year and when I'm ready to return, I just hope the fans will want whatever I have to offer"

The groundbreaking tour was filmed at the Olympic Stadium in Barcelona, Spain and was released on VHS.

Tina Turner Bids Farewell

By David Kohn

September 11, 2000 / 7:19 PM EDT / CBS

Mike Wallace catches up with a musical legend once again as she belts out the last notes of a long and storied career. Now in her sixties, Turner just last year finished her farewell tour.

Tina Turner is more than just a rock 'n' roll stunner. Beyond her remarkable talent, her vitality, her prowess and power on stage, she is a woman of courage and substance offstage. This was evident when Wallace first profiled her in 1996 when she was 56 years old.

 • November 1996 Report
 • September 2000 Update

Turner has lived in Europe for more than a decade. In Europe, she became a bigger star than she ever was in the United States. "No one in America knows that," she said. "Success in America - what I find with my homeland, nothing lasts very long. Europe is different," Turner explained. "You're right there with them until you come back."

Her love affair with Europe was only the latest chapter of a remarkable life. Born Annie Mae Bullock in Nutbush, Tenn., she picked cotton as a child and planned on becoming a nurse when, at 18, St. Louis musician Ike Turner discovered her unique voice. He hired her, married her and renamed her Tina Turner. They became the Ike and Tina Turner revue.

For the next 16 years, Turner created a reputation as one of the most dynamic performers of her time, while Ike Turner created his own reputation as one of the most abusive husbands in show business.

She finally left him in 1976, struggled on the lounge circuit for years, until 1984, when her comeback album, Private Dancer , sold 10 million copies and garnered four Grammy awards. And then her very candid autobiography detailed the years of physical abuse that she suffered from Ike, abuse graphically documented in the 1993 film What's Love Got to Do with It .

The violent history with Ike left hidden physical scars long after their divorce. "I have had, basically, my face bashed in, and I never did anything about it," she said. "I just went through my life because I was all right. And then I started to have problems traveling with my sinuses," Turner explained.

"So when they went in to correct it, I ended up with...another nose," she added.

Her only serious relationship since Ike Turner has been with Erwin Bach, a German-born record company executive 16 years her junior. At the time of the 1996 interview, they had lived together for 10 years.

"I'm not in love with the rock act," Bach said. "I'm in love with the human being."

He claimed Turner is the boss. And with that comes all the toys she wanted. She had a customized Lamborghini jeep and, when on tour, a chartered private jet. Her home in the south of France had breathtaking views of the French Riviera, a spectacular pool and all the creature comforts she needed. When asked if she deserved all this luxury, Turner responded, "I deserve more."

Hidden away on the second floor is a Buddhist shrine. This born-Baptist credits Buddhism with giving her the strength that she needed to get through the rough times. And she continued to chant daily.

But Turner was able to imagine an end to her performing career. "I could say it now, but I don't think it's time," she said. "Most people think that I could not retire right now. I could. I'm pleased with my life, with the journey. I'm perfectly fine now if I never went on stage again."

September 2000 Report

Turner is 60 years old now and approaching the end of another world tour she has officially announced will be her last. "This time, I know it's a closure. I can feel it," says Turner.

The beginning of her last time around was her appearance on the VH1 program "Diva's '99." She was set to perform her trademark version of "Proud Mary" with another rock 'n' roll legend, Elton John, a long-time friend with whom she was planning an elaborate tour. That plan, according to Turner, died at the show's rehearsal.

"I made a mistake when I needed to show him how to play 'Proud Mary.' The mistake is you don't show Elton John how to play his piano."

John's reaction, according to Turner, was anything but subtle. "He just went into a rage, which he apologized for later. He said it was wrong."

She canceled the tour and the multimillion-dollar payday that would have come with it. Instead, she recorded a new album, performed at the Super Bowl and then set off on her farewell tour. It may be her last but she treats it as though it is her first.

"It's a play. It's an act. For the moment, it's a small movie, so to speak," she says, describing her latest tour. "That's why I like all of the stuff and the action and the playoff between me and the girls. It's life on that stage for that two hours."

"And sometimes the music is loud, and sometimes it's not," she said. "I need that on stage. I need a burst of life. That's entertainment for me."

When the tour winds up, Turner says, she looks forward to settling down quietly with Bach in Europe. She will have the satisfaction of contemplating just how far she has come from Nutbush, Tenn., and the old days when American audiences were just not all that interested in the ex-wife of Ike Turner.

Turner believes it is easier for people of color to live in Europe than in the United States but she says she doesn't spend much time on the issue. "I've never bothered about my color. I never had that thing about being black," she explains. "If the whole world was like tat, maybe there would be more harmony and love. Maybe. I don't have a problem with being black in a white country or being with my people."

She says that only now has she become comfortable enough with her career to walk away without a single regret. "It's almost like the war is over. It's all finished. You've arrived. You got there."

farewell tour tina turner

Introduction:

Tina Turner is one of the most influential and successful singers of all time. With a career spanning more than six decades, she has been an enduring presence in the music industry. Her unique blend of rock, soul and funk has made her an international star. In 2009, after more than 50 years in the music business, Turner announced her retirement from touring. But, is Tina Turner still touring?

Since her debut in the 1960s, Turner has become one of the best-selling artists of all time. She has released 22 studio albums, seven live albums, and several compilation albums. Turner has sold over 200 million records worldwide and is one of the most successful female artists in history. 32. She Didn’t Go To Ike’s Funeral

Ike Turner never got his life back on track in the years after Tina left him. His addictions and wild behavior landed him multiple times behind bars and in and out of rehab. In 2007, he fatally overdosed while suffering from a terminal form of emphysema. Tina Turner didn’t go to his funeral. A publicist wrote: "Tina hasn't had any contact with Ike in more than 30 years.
The "Father of Funk," the "Grandfather of Hip-Hop," and the "Godfather of Soul" was also the first person to be inducted in the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame—and that’s not all. Did you know that no artist’s work comes close to being sampled as much as Brown’s songs have been? In other words, his work has inspired generations of musicians who have incorporated audio snippets, or some part of his tunes in their own creations.

42. The Hall Of Fame Ignored Her Solo Career

Even after success, Tina’s career had setbacks. Take 1991, when the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame snubbed her. They inducted Tina in 1991— with one brutal twist. The Hall didn’t recognize her as a solo artist. Instead, the Hall inducted the Ike and Tina Turner Revue. Luckily, Ike missed the ceremony. He was behind bars after one of his many intoxicated adventures.

As for Tina, she also passed on attending. Unsurprisingly, the idea of sharing the spotlight with her abuser wasn’t her idea of a good time.

46. She Beat Cancer…Barely

Tina Turner wrote a memoir in 2018. Called My Love Story , Tina wrote about her battle with intestinal cancer in 2016. She opted for homeopathic treatment instead of modern medicine, but it led to kidney failure. In the end, surgeons removed part of her intestine, but the kidney problems remained.

The kidney is such an amazing organ that we actually each have two of them. Their job is to filter out waste from the bloodstream, and this is crucial to our ability to live. One of the most fascinating things about them is that despite being crucial, it is possible for people to donate one of their kidneys and still survive because, miraculously, the second kidney can actually take on double the work when the first one is removed. That's what you call rising to the occasion!

47. She Had Another Dark Period

Tina’s journey during this time was an incredibly dark one. She needed a kidney transplant and thought the situation hopeless. Her thoughts turned toward an assisted end of her life, much as they did in the 1960s. She put her name on the list of an organization in Switzerland and waited for the end. Instead, she got a beautiful gesture.

The heart isn’t the only part of the body linked to love in Tina’s life. Her husband Erwin Bach actually offered her one of his kidneys during this time, and the successful surgery took place in 2017. That's right, Tina Turned quite literally carried a piece of her husband around with her.

Few people know this, but Tina renounced her US citizenship in 2013. She had always been popular in Europe, even more so than in America in her later years.
In 1853, three years had passed since Lola Montez’s last marriage, so it was high time to get another one. That year, she wed California newspaperman Patrick Hull. Somehow, it was probably her worst marriage to date. The union lasted mere months, and a doctor who co-signed the divorce papers ended up slain in a separate incident. Is this the last fatality in Lola’s story? Nope!

50. She Finally Escaped

The horrific marriage between Ike and Tina Turner is infamous— but few know the harrowing story of her escape . In the middle of a tour in 1976, Tina and Ike were fighting at a hotel in Dallas, where they had a show that night. Ike was beating Tina and she picked that moment to escape.

With bloody clothes, a little over 30 cents in her pocket, and a gas station credit card, she fled to a friend’s home. Shortly after, she filed for divorce.

How can anyone forgive the one person who brought them so much pain? Doing interviews as part of her memoir promotional tour, Tina told The New York Times that she had forgiven Ike Turner. However, it wasn’t a case of forgive and forget. She said, "He asked for one more tour with me, and I said, 'No, absolutely not.' Ike wasn’t someone you could forgive and allow him back in".

Just after she beat cancer and recovered from a kidney transplant, Tina’s life was rocked by another devastating tragedy. In July 2018, her son Craig took his own life. ‘Tina: The Tina Turner Musical’ is a cheetah-print-clad example of Broadway’s obsession with jukebox musicals

It turns out not even loud fabrics, louder voices, flashy strobe lights and muscular legs could save this show from falling into the category of yet another largely forgettable jukebox musical..

Content warning: This story contains reference to domestic violence and drug abuse.

Broadway lurches toward an unfortunate trend of unoriginality, producing mainly shows based on already existing material like movies, books and, in the case of “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical,” iconic musicians. One is left to wonder: do shows like these merit existence, or are they merely cash grabs designed to lure us in through nostalgia?

This was the question on my mind as the curtain rose on “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical,” at the Overture Center for the Arts .

“Tina” is a jukebox musical that features the iconic discography of the artist while telling the story of her tumultuous rise to fame.

A jukebox musical is a show that consists primarily of already existing pop music, such as Mamma Mia! or Moulin Rouge! In addition to their use of an exclamation point in the title, these shows share the quality of being the most well-known examples of the genre.

Transparently, I knew very little about the life of our show’s subject prior to the performance. This lack of knowledge kept me engaged, especially as the show shifted through the distinct decades of Tina’s life.

The 1960s were represented with “Shake a Tailfeather,'' a highpoint of the show as Tina, her sister Alline and their Mod girlfriends got ready for a night out in St. Louis, finding the perfect outfits, styling their hair and of course, partaking in elaborate group choreography.

Tina’s Vegas residency was brought to life through “Disco Inferno,” a number that felt like the 1970s to a T, with backup singers wearing flared white jumpsuits and a remarkably powerful disco ball that bathed the theater in its light. “What’s Love Got to Do With It” rounded the decades out, in a performance just as big and beautiful as Tina’s classic 1980s hairdo.

Due to the nature of Tina’s early life, the show does contain serious subject matter such as familial abandonment, domestic violence and drug abuse. These topics are essential to a retelling of Tina’s life, and their inclusion was intended to demonstrate her strength and resilience.

But I am not sure the audience's reaction reflected this fact. The crowd erupted with cheers when Tina had to take physical action against her abusive husband and music partner, a reaction that felt tonally inappropriate.

It was clear to me the writers had somehow missed the mark in portraying how this situation truly affected Tina. I believe this was partially due to the minimal insight into the singer’s inner dialogue throughout the show. We heard about how this abuse affected her mother, and even her tour manager, but we never really heard about it from Tina herself.

Amid the more harrowing details of her life, a shining light persisted throughout the show’s narrative: dedication to celebrating the tradition of Black musicians.

Far too often, Black musicians are overlooked in the industry’s history. It was both refreshing and beautiful to see “Tina” fully embrace this aspect of the singer's identity through the costumes, casting and dialogue. Each piece made it apparent the creative team behind Tina set out to center the show around Blackness in a way that was surely powerful and important to audience members.

So, who do you enlist to capture the essence of such a distinct beloved figure in music history? The answer, I found during Tuesday’s performance, was Zurin Villanueva.

Villanueva blew the audience away with powerhouse vocals that made my throat sore just listening to them and kicks so high that, at times, it felt like they could reach me in the theater’s upper circle. She accomplished all this while showcasing a rather convincing Tina, which particularly shined in her performances of “River Deep – Mountain High” and “Proud Mary.”

Other cast highlights included Symphony King, who played young Anna Mae. King shocked the audience when she opened her tiny mouth and effortlessly filled the Overture Center with her expertly executed riffs.

Although the cast’s renditions were beautiful, I couldn’t help but wish they had material to perform outside the constraints of the jukebox genre. With artist-based musicals like “Tina,” performers are shoehorned into doing note-for-note impressions of material we’ve already seen on that stage, and can readily access thanks to the internet.

The show’s set design also left something to be desired, using an underwhelming screen-based approach that even Villanueva's vocals couldn’t quite distract from.

At its best, the screen helped sell the ambiance of a 1980s Tina Turner arena tour, but, at its worst, which was unfortunately for a majority of the show, it made me feel like I was trapped inside of a lava lamp.

Despite this qualm with the production, I cannot deny that the last scene of “Tina” is breathtaking, filled with strobe lights, simulated sparks and a scenic layout that rightfully showcased the band. If only they could have pulled out these bells and whistles earlier in the runtime.

At the end of the day, “Tina” was an extraordinary showcase of vocal talent to the catchy soundtrack of rock n’ roll’s queen. It did not break the mold of your standard unoriginal jukebox musical, with its creativity and design leaving something to be desired. But it did provide a night of sonically pleasing fun at the theater.
