De Kuip

One of the world’s most iconic stadiums with some of the best atmosphere on the right night. Feyenoord is looking to build a new stadium so make sure to pay De Kuip a visit while it lasts.

Club: Feyenoord Rotterdam | Opening: 1937 | Capacity: 51,177 seats

History and description

De Kuip, officially called Stadion Feijenoord, was built in the 1930s to provide Feyenoord with a new world-class stadium.

Inspiration for the new stadium came from then club-president Van Zandvliet, whose ambitions for the club involved a new 65,000-stadium.

While many doubted the viability of his plans, the Rotterdam city council voted in favour and two architects were sent on study trip around Europe. They returned particularly inspired by the newly constructed double-decker stand at Highbury .

Construction of De Kuip, Dutch for tub or bowl, started in 1935 and finished only 10 months later. The stadium was ready in July 1936, however the Rotterdam government had failed to upgrade the infrastructure around the stadium and a first match had to get postponed.

Half a year later, on the 27th of March 1937, De Kuip finally opened with a match between Feyenoord and Belgian side Beerschot (5-2). A month later the Dutch national team played its first international at the stadium against Belgium.

In the next decades, De Kuip turned into one of the prime venues of Europe and hosted various European cup finals.

The first was the final of the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1963 between Tottenham and Atlético Madrid, the second another Cup Winners’ Cup final in 1968 between Milan and Hamburg, followed by the 1972 European Cup final between Ajax and Inter (2-0), and another Cup Winners’Cup final in 1974, this time between Magdeburg and Milan.

In the 1980s, De Kuip hosted the 1982 European Cup final between Aston Villa and Bayern (1-0), and the 1985 Cup Winners’ Cup final between Everton and Rapid Wien. A fifth and sixth Cup Winners’ Cup final were hosted in 1991 and 1997, the first between Manchester United and Barcelona, and the second between Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.

In 2002, the final of the UEFA Cup was played at De Kuip, which saw home side Feyenoord beat Borussia Dortmund 3-2.

By then, De Kuip had already undergone an extensive redevelopment. In the early 1990s, the state of De Kuip had deteriorated to the extent that it could hardly meet safety requirements, and works included a thorough refurbishment of the stands, the creation of new corporate facilities, and the installation of a roof over the previously uncovered stands.

De Kuip was chosen to host the final of the Euro 2000 championships, receiving preference over the newer and slightly bigger Amsterdam ArenA . During the tournament, the stadium hosted three group matches, the quarter-final between Holland and Yugoslavia (6-1), and the final between France and Italy (2-1).

Feyenoord have long been contemplating either renovating De Kuip or building a completely new stadium. The decision finally fell in favour of building a new 63,000-seater stadium next to De Kuip, though the club still needs to obtain planning permission and arrange funding, and realisation is therefore far from guaranteed.

How to get to the De Kuip

De Kuip is located on the south bank of the river Meuse, just a few hundred metres away from the river, but about 4.5 kilometres from Rotterdam’s city centre and more than 5.5 kilometres from the central rail station.

If coming by car, the stadium is best reached from the A16 motorway. Take exit 24 Feijenoord (if coming from the north the first after the Van Brienenoord bridge). Follow the Stadionweg west until reaching the stadium.

If using public transport, take tram 23 from Rotterdam’s central rail station. After a 20-minute journey get off at stop Stadion Feijenoord. On matchdays one can also take tram 29.

An alternative is taking a train to rail station Lombardijen, also on the south bank, and continue with tram 2 in the direction of Charlois. After a 6-minute journey get off at either station Beukendaal or Breeplein. The stadium is a further 10-minute walk away. Both trams run at least once every 10 minutes.

On matchdays it is also possible to catch a train from Rotterdam Central Station (or Dordrecht) to station Stadion Feijenoord, which lies adjacent to the stadium. On non-matchdays there is no train service to this station.

Address: Van Zandvlietplein 1, 3077 AA Rotterdam

Eat, drink, and sleep near De Kuip

De Kuip is part of a larger sports complex that includes the club’s youth academy. The stadium lies in a predominantly residential area, and in particular the area across the railway tracks rates among the poorest of Rotterdam.

The area on the banks of the river Meuse has recently been redeveloped though, and boast a cinema, some eating options, and the odd bar. Still, eating and drinking can best be done in Rotterdam’s city centre, from where it is a short public transport ride to the stadium. The area around Stadhuisplein is a good start for drinking, though Rotterdam nightlife is rather dispersed over the central areas.

There are no hotels located in the immediate vicinity of De Kuip. The closest hotels are in the Kop of Zuid area on the renovated and edgy south bank, from where one can walk to the stadium in about half an hour. Otherwise, there is a good few options in Rotterdam’s centre .

Feyenoord Tickets

Tickets for Feyenoord matches can be bought online , or at the Service & Tickets booths at De Kuip.

If tickets remain available, these can also be bought on the gate from 3.5 hours before kick-off, however Feyenoord tends to sell out most league games so booking in advance is strongly recommended.

Feyenoord require possession of a Feyenoord Club Card to be able to buy tickets for a certain number of matches that have a high risk for fan violence, typically about 7 per season.

Tickets prices range from €23.50 for a lower-tier seat directly behind the goal to €48.50 for a central seat at the long sides.

De Kuip Seating Plan and Where to Sit

feyenoord stadium tour

De Kuip is designed in a bowl style, similar to other big European grounds. There are essentially three tiers that run around the structure, with Maastribune the stand where the executive lodges and VIP seating are located.

Feyenoord Ticket Prices

Where you want to sit and how old you are will dictate how much you have to pay for your tickets at De Kuip. If you’re an adult, for example, then you’re likely to pay between €23.50 and €63.50, whilst anyone over 65 will pay €23. Younger people will pay around €21.

How To Get Feyenoord Tickets

Feyenoord’s official website is the best place to go if you want to book tickets to see them play. That said, plenty of Dutch people are fluent in English so you can try to call the ticket office directly if you’d prefer. You need membership to log into their ticket site so calling might actually be easier.

About Feyenoord

feyenoord stadium tour

As mentioned at the start, Feyenoord are one of the most successful teams in all of Dutch football. To date they have picked up fifteen Eredivisie titles and thirteen KNVB Cups on the domestic stage as well as two UEFA Cups and one European Cup. There’s little question that the club’s most successful period came in the 1960s and 1970s when two of those European trophies and six league titles were picked up. They have also played continuously in the top-flight since they reached it in 1921, back when it was known as Eerste Klasse rather than the Eredivisie. That’s a better record than both Ajax and PSV.

Founded as Wilhelmina in 1908, the club was unsettled to start with and changed its name numerous times. It became SC Feijenoord in 1912 and remained under that title until 1974 when the Feijenoord became Feyenoord. In 1978 the club settled on its current name of Feyenoord Rotterdam because SC Feyenoord separated into its own amateur team. Their biggest rival is Ajax and when the two teams go head-to-head the derby is referred to as De Klassieker. One of the biggest changes will come to the club in 2019 when HC Feijenoord, an amateur football team called Sportclub Feyenoord, and Rotterdam Basketball all get brought into the frame as it becomes a multi-sports club.

De Kuip History

feyenoord stadium tour

Though it’s official name is Stadion Feijenoord, the vast majority of football fans know the ground as De Kuip. A decision to build a new stadium was reached by Leen van Zandvliet, the then President of the club in the 1930s. He wanted it to be unique for a football ground on the continent, having two free-hanging stands and nothing obstructing views of supporters anywhere in the stadium. Such was the success of the new ground that many stadiums throughout Europe took it as their blueprint, including the likes of Barcelona’s Nou Camp. It could have been so different, with German occupiers in Rotterdam coming close to tearing it down for scrap usage during the Second World War.

The ground hasn’t just been used for Feyenoord matches. As well as hosting several games for the Dutch national side and numerous cup finals. One such final was the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in 1963 when Tottenham Hotspur became the first English club to be victorious in a European final. The most recent European final held there was the 2002 UEFA Cup Final. The likes of Michael Jackson, Eric Clapton and Bob Dylan have all played concerts there over the years, though such big music events have happened less and less frequently since the Amsterdam Arena opened its doors in 1996.

Future Developments

feyenoord stadium tour

There has been talk of Feyenoord opening a new stadium since 2006, though the plans have been changed on a regular basis. It wasn’t until May 2017 that the city of Rotterdam agreed to the building of a new stadium, which has the working title of Feyenoord City. It was hoped that it would have 63,000 seats and would open ahead of the 2022-2023 season. However, in 2021 prices soared and after such a long wait, the project was scrapped.

Mohamed Salah and Jürgen Klopp on the touchline at West Ham.

‘There’s going to be fire if I speak’: Salah adds fuel to touchline row with Klopp

  • Liverpool forward was pulled away from coach by Darwin Núñez
  • Klopp: ‘We spoke in the dressing room … it is done for me’

Mohamed Salah ruined Jürgen Klopp’s attempt to play down his touchline row with the winger by saying there would be “fire” if he stopped to speak after Liverpool’s faltering title challenge suffered another blow in their 2-2 draw at West Ham .

Salah, who was dropped after Liverpool’s midweek defeat at Everton , cut a disgruntled figure while he was waiting to come off the bench at the London Stadium. The winger reacted badly after Klopp, whose side were chasing a late winner after squandering a 2-1 lead, tried to speak to him. The incident ended with Darwin Núñez, another substitute, having to pull Salah away from Liverpool’s manager.

Klopp, who is set to be replaced by Feyenoord’s Arne Slot at the end of the season , did not want to dwell on the incident. “We spoke about it in the dressing room and that is done for me,” he said. Asked if Salah was also ready to move on, Klopp added: “That was my impression.”

But Salah did not appear to be happy when he walked past reporters on his way out of the ground. He declined interview requests and said: “There’s gonna be a fire today if I speak.”

It was another disappointing day for Liverpool , whose hopes of catching Arsenal and Manchester City look slim after a run of one win in five games. They are two points behind Arsenal, who have a game in hand, and one below City, who have played two games fewer than Liverpool. Klopp refused to give up the fight but he did not sound optimistic.

“Do they [Arsenal and City] look like they lose two or three games?” Klopp said. “I don’t think so. I am not angry. Write what you want about that. I don’t think about it. It’s just we have to win football games and let’s see what that means in the end.

after newsletter promotion

“We have 75 points, 84 possible, and I think it’s a good target to try to do that. That will be my attitude and my mindset and we will see what that means. It’s a while ago that somebody became champion with 84 points. I am sorry but I don’t have better news.”

Liverpool links intensify as Feyenoord star spotted in away end at London Stadium

Amid the speculation surrounding Arne Slot's impending appointment as Liverpool manager , the Reds' links to Feyenoord took another turn during Liverpool's 2-2 draw against West Ham with the presence of a current player among the away fans at the London Stadium.

With Slot, the current manager at Feyenoord, reportedly on the brink of taking over from Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool this summer, attention is already shifting towards potential new arrivals at Anfield.

Naturally, the Reds have been linked with a number of Feyenoord players in the past week.

Among them are forward Santiago Gimenez, 23, who has been in prolific form this season, netting an impressive 21 goals, and versatile midfielder Quinten Timber, 22, who has contributed seven goals and eight assists.

However, the most concrete link between has been to defender Lutsharel Geertruida.

The 23-year-old, capable of playing as a full-back or centre-back, has been in impressive form, registering six goals and four assists in the Eredivisie this season.

Geertruida in the away end at West Ham

Unsurprisingly, links with the defender went into overdrive on Saturday when he posted an image on his personal Snapchat account (via Anfield Sector ) to show that he was in the away end with the Liverpool supporters at the London Stadium.

With his deal set to expire in the summer of 2025, Geertruida's contract situation adds to the intrigue as Liverpool could potentially secure his services for a reduced fee, especially given Feyenoord's willingness to engage in negotiation in the past.

Last summer, the Rotterdam club were said to be holding out for a similar fee from German side RB Leipzig to the one paid by Arsenal to sign Jurrien Timber (an initial £36 million).

Now, with the allure of reuniting with his soon-to-be former boss Slot, his presence in the away end suggests Geertruida is more than tempted by the prospect of a new challenge in the Premier League.

It might not be long until we see the Dutchman wearing the all-red strip.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.
