For some travelers, cramming into an economy airline seat for a long flight abroad is a necessary evil of international adventures. And yet other travelers — particularly those who are savvy with points and miles — prefer to leverage travel rewards to book these long-haul flights in first class.
However, as some airlines have grounded first class products and other airlines restrict first class award availability, it can be frustrating to try to find and book these luxury international award flights. So today, we are going to focus on the best first class award flights you can actually book.
Best first class award flights
1. japan airlines first class.
Japan Airlines is another Oneworld airline with an incredible — and achievable — first class product. The JAL Suite is a beautifully designed wood-grained suite; beyond the seat, the airline's first class is renowned for its incredible onboard dining, drinks and service.
Even better, you can find availability for two (or sometimes more) passengers at the same time. However, first class award availability isn't as easy to find as Cathay Pacific.
Again, American Airlines' website is the easiest way to search for award availability. Just enter your route and limit results to nonstop options. Then, either book online through American Airlines AAdvantage or Alaska Mileage Plan.
Rewards program: Alaska Mileage Plan (or any other Oneworld partner).
Minimum points needed: 70,000. Like Cathay Pacific, Alaska charges 70,000 Mileage Plan miles each way in Japan Airlines first class between the U.S. and Asia. Or book through American for 80,000 AAdvantage miles each way between the U.S. and Japan or South Korea.
Transfer partners: Marriott Bonvoy. Marriott Bonvoy is the only major transferrable partner of Alaska and American. Citi ThankYou points can now be transferred to AA as well.
Best credit card for a points boost: The AAdvantage® Aviator® Red World Elite Mastercard® is currently offering new members: Earn 50,000 AAdvantage® bonus miles after making your first purchase and paying the $99 annual fee in full, both within the first 90 days.

2. Qatar Qsuite
Qatar's Qsuite is widely considered one of the best business class products in the world. Indeed, it rivals (and beats) many first class products on other airlines. So, Qatar Airways isn't exaggerating when claiming Qsuite is "first in business."
» Learn more: Qatar Qsuite or Emirates First Class: Battle of the airline suites
The fact that Qsuite is considered a business class product works out in our favor. Instead of paying first class prices, loyalty programs charge business class award rates. That means booking luxury award flights for comparatively cheap rates.
You don't have to travel far to find a Qatar flight. With the launch of a new Seattle route in early 2021, Qatar now serves 12 destinations throughout the U.S. And if you book in advance, you can count on Qatar Qsuite availability. Some routes even have four award seats available at the same time — even on one of the world's longest flights (between Los Angeles and Doha). That means you can book out the entire 4-person Qsuite "quad" if you're able.
Rewards program: American Airlines AAdvantage (or any other Oneworld partner).
Minimum points needed: 70,000. For one-way award flights to/from the U.S., American charges just 70,000 miles to the Middle East or the Indian Subcontinent (including the Maldives), or 75,000 miles each way to anywhere in Africa. Book through Qatar to pay 70,000 Qmiles between the U.S. and Doha, 80,000 Qmiles to India or 85,000 Qmiles to the Maldives.
Transfer partners: Marriott Bonvoy (American, Qatar) or Citi ThankYou Points (American, Qatar).
Best credit card for a points boost: Citi Premier® Card . Earn 60,000 bonus ThankYou® Points after you spend $4,000 in purchases within the first 3 months of account opening. Plus, for a limited time, earn a total of 10 ThankYou® Points per $1 spend on hotel, car rentals, and attractions (excluding air travel) booked on the Citi Travel℠ portal through June 30, 2024.
3. United Polaris
The rollout of United's new Polaris business class seat was slow at first, but those worries are now in the past. United has now installed Polaris in over 100 aircraft. And, thanks to reasonable award rates and solid award availability, Polaris is now one of the more accessible premium cabin products available.
For example, even during the peak summer months, you can fly United Polaris business class between Newark and Amsterdam almost any day in July and many dates in August.
Unfortunately, United is still flying some aircraft with its subpar eight-seats-wide business class from yesteryear. So, it's important to check the seat map of the aircraft you're booking to make sure that it shows only a few seats across in business class. Here's an example of what Polaris business class will look like:
Rewards program: United MileagePlus (or any other Star Alliance partner program).
Minimum points needed: 45,000. Book one of the cheapest business class awards to Europe through Turkish Miles & Smiles for just 45,000 miles each way. United currently charges just 60,000 MileagePlus miles each way for business class to Europe.
Transfer partners: Citi ThankYou points (Citi) or Chase Ultimate Rewards (United).
Best credit card for a points boost: The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card features this welcome bonus: Enjoy a one-time bonus of 75,000 miles once you spend $4,000 on purchases within 3 months from account opening, equal to $750 in travel.

Honorable mentions
Though these airlines don't quite make the cut to be one of the best, if you're in the right place, have the right points or are searching at the right time, you might consider booking these premium products.
ANA First Class: ANA unveiled a brand new "THE Suite" first class seat in July 2019, and it quickly garnered accolades as one of the best first class products. However, THE Suite is still operating on only a few routes. If you can find it on your route, book through Virgin Atlantic points to pay as few as 45,000 Virgin points each way.
Delta One Suites: Delta doesn't have a true international first class product, but Delta's new Delta One Suites aren’t far behind some of the others on this list. You can book Delta One Suites between the U.S. and mainland Europe for just 50,000 Virgin Atlantic points each way.
Turkish Business Class: Turkish's business class is so fancy that Turkish flies a chef on each flight to serve the business class passengers. Plus, Turkish Miles & Smiles charges just 45,000 miles each way between the U.S. and Turkey or Europe.
Korean First Class: Korean Air offers an excellent first class product and wide-open availability, often with four first class seats available on a flight. However, it's only currently available from Los Angeles and New York-JFK. The best way to book Korean Air first class is with 80,000 Korean Air SKYPASS miles each way, but Marriott Bonvoy is the only major transferrable currency that transfers to Korean Air.

If you want to book cheap first class award flights
Incredible first class award flights are achievable for many award travelers; however, you need to know which airlines and products are actually bookable, as many airlines block first class awards from partners or are stingy with award availability.
Still, you have excellent options to fly first class to Asia for as few as 45,000 points each way, a solid business class product to Europe for just 45,000 miles one-way or one of the best business class products in the world to the Middle East or India for as few as 70,000 miles.

How to book Lufthansa first class with points and miles
Germany's flagship carrier — Lufthansa — has engineered a quintessential first-class experience: functional, consistent and comfortable, yet without the over-the-top opulence of some of its counterparts.
There's no debating that Lufthansa first class is a pleasure to fly, but the ability to secure precious award seats can be difficult. However, even with this inconvenience, it is still worth the extra effort.
Keep reading to find out everything you need to know about booking Lufthansa first class with points and miles.
Where is Lufthansa first class offered?
Lufthansa currently offers first-class services aboard three long-haul aircraft: the Boeing 747-800, the Airbus A340-600 and the Airbus A380. The airline expects to add a new first-class seat to the Airbus A350 as part of the highly anticipated Allegris rollout later this year.
Lufthansa operates a variety of these aircraft on routes between the U.S. and Germany:
- Between Frankfurt Airport (FRA) and the following airports: Chicago's O'Hare International Airport (ORD), Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Miami International Airport (MIA), Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Washington, D.C.'s Dulles International Airport (IAD)
- Between Munich Airport (MUC) and the following airports: Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), LAX, MIA and EWR
Lufthansa also operates first class to select destinations in South America, Africa and Asia from Frankfurt and Munich.
What's included with a first-class Lufthansa seat?
Lufthansa's first-class cabin will be similar regardless of which aircraft you fly, as each aircraft type has eight seats.
Upon boarding, you can expect a variety of first-class staples: a plush seat with a generous 81 inches of pitch, inflight entertainment with a 17-inch display, Bose noise-canceling headphones, an amenity kit stocked with high-end toiletries, pajamas and slippers, turndown service, a caviar appetizer and a selection of top-notch wine and liquor.
Caviar is a signature part of the Lufthansa first-class experience, so much so that in 2016, the airline was responsible for about 5% of all caviar consumed globally.
One of the finest features of flying on a Lufthansa first-class ticket out of Frankfurt is access to the First Class Terminal . This is where Lufthansa separates itself from the pack — physically and figuratively.
The First Class Terminal has its own entrance and is accessible solely to those few travelers with a first-class ticket or to Lufthansa's top-tier HON Circle elite members. After your "personal assistant" coordinates check-in, you can spend time relaxing in a variety of ways: by catching a nap in a daybed, taking a shower, enjoying a gourmet meal, chilling at the bar with a selection of over 130 different whiskies or unwinding in the cigar lounge.
In short, the carrier's First Class Terminal provides no hassle, no lines and white-glove service at every turn.
After clearing immigration, you'll be chauffeured across the tarmac in a Porsche or Mercedes directly to your plane. If you're flying on Lufthansa's flagship A380, you'll be put in an elevator that goes directly to the upper deck, skipping the boarding gate entirely. This is truly first-class style.
How do I find Lufthansa award availability?
The trick to booking Lufthansa first class is finding award space. It sounds simple enough, yet it is, in a word, elusive. But if you understand the quirks of Lufthansa's most cherished award space, snagging a seat for yourself may not be as tough as it seems.
The easiest way to book Lufthansa with points and miles is to use Miles & More , the loyalty program of Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines and Brussels Airlines. Like Singapore Airlines' KrisFlyer program , Lufthansa reserves more first-class seats for its members than members of partner airlines.
The issue is that Miles & More is not a transfer partner of any major credit card programs, so earning miles in this program is difficult. This program also charges large carrier-imposed surcharges, making the redemption less attractive.
Lufthansa does not open any first-class award seats to Star Alliance partner bookings until a maximum of 15 days before departure.
However, not all routes, nor all seats, will be released at that time. Lufthansa will likely release additional seats on more routes about a week before the flight. In other words, finding first-class award space can require constant monitoring for two weeks before your flight.
In the weeks before your desired flight, consider using Google Flights or ExpertFlyer to see how many paid first-class seats are available on each flight so you can determine how many seats may be released as awards at the last minute.
If there are zero seats available or only one seat is for sale as a cash fare, it's unlikely there will be any first-class award seats released. If more than four first-class seats are still for sale, at least two will likely be made available to book with partner miles, though this may only be a day or two before departure.
The Seats.aero tool also has a handy "first-class flight finder" that will show you all the available seats with the dates and routes.
Once you know there is first-class award availability on a flight you want to book, you can decide which points and miles to use to book. You'll need to decide quickly as other savvy travelers could snap up the seats before you get the chance.
As a member of Star Alliance, Lufthansa flights are bookable via a plethora of partner award programs when you're ready to jump on an award flight. However, not all award charts are created equally.
Each partner has different rules that dictate how many miles and dollars any given flight route will cost. Here is a quick rundown of what you can expect with each of the major Star Alliance partner programs for flights between the U.S. and Germany. Remember, these amounts will change drastically for flights between other regions.
Avianca LifeMiles
- Mileage required (one-way): 87,000 miles to Europe
- Taxes and fees: Low, only $30.60 for a flight from San Francisco to Frankfurt
- Transfer partners: American Express Membership Rewards , Bilt Rewards , Capital One miles , Citi ThankYou Rewards and Marriott Bonvoy
Avianca LifeMiles will be your best friend or your worst enemy. Redemption rates are low, taxes are low and one-way tickets are allowed.
So, what could go wrong? Well, a lot.
Avianca's customer service is notoriously bad, and its booking platform can be unreliable. Avianca's call center is also unreliable; inconsistent information and disconnections are rather common.
If your award ticket works out, LifeMiles will be one of the best deals for Lufthansa first class, considering the fees and mileage rates. But if something goes sideways, don't say you haven't been warned.
United Airlines MileagePlus
- Mileage required (one-way): 120,000 miles to Europe
- Taxes and fees: Very low, only $5.60 for a flight from San Francisco to Frankfurt
- Transfer partners: Chase Ultimate Rewards , Bilt Rewards and Marriott Bonvoy
United MileagePlus ' award rates are at the high end of the spectrum, but taxes and fees are very reasonable. Fortunately, United MileagePlus miles are some of the easiest to obtain.
Air Canada Aeroplan
- Mileage required (one-way): 90,000 miles from the West Coast or 100,000 miles from the Midwest and East Coast
- Taxes and fees: Reasonable, around $50 for a flight to Germany or less than $200 for a flight from Europe to the U.S.
- Transfer partners: American Express Membership Rewards, Bilt Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, Capital One miles and Marriott Bonvoy
Air Canada Aeroplan used to be one of the top options for booking Lufthansa first class due to the comparatively low redemption rate. However, increases to its award flights mean LifeMiles is a cheaper option.
Best way to earn points and miles for Lufthansa first class
As we mentioned, Lufthansa's Miles & More program is not part of a transferable rewards program such as Chase Ultimate Rewards, Citi ThankYou Rewards, Amex Membership Rewards, Bilt Rewards or Capital One miles.
Therefore, you cannot simply transfer your hard-earned points and miles. However, you can book Lufthansa first class with all of the major transferable currencies by choosing the right transfer partner, such as Aeroplan, MileagePlus or LifeMiles.
Here are some of our favorite cards that all currently offer attractive welcome bonuses and will allow you to transfer to a partner airline in which you can book a Lufthansa first-class ticket:
- The Business Platinum Card® from American Express (transfer to LifeMiles or Aeroplan)
- The Platinum Card® from American Express (transfer to LifeMiles or Aeroplan)
- American Express® Gold Card (transfer to LifeMiles or Aeroplan)
- Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card (transfer to LifeMiles or Aeroplan)
- Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card (transfer to LifeMiles or Aeroplan)
- Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card (transfer to MileagePlus or Aeroplan)
- Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card (transfer to MileagePlus or Aeroplan)
Bottom line
Lufthansa's first class is undoubtedly one of the finest ways to cross the Atlantic. It's also fairly attainable using points and miles, relatively speaking, at least.
By understanding when Lufthansa releases award seats (starting within 15 days of departure, with more in the final few days) and knowing which Star Alliance partner programs will provide the best value, you may enjoy an elevated flight experience the next time you travel to Europe.

If Japan Airlines first class isn’t near the top of your list of flying experiences to try, you might want to reconsider.
From the plush lounge to your private first class seat to the incredible hospitality, this is a chance to enjoy pure luxury. If you enjoy Champagne, flying first class on Japan Airlines will be a particularly special treat.
Before we dive into the best ways to book this amazing experience, let’s discuss what you can expect when flying first class with one of the best airlines in the world.
(We’ve also covered the top ways to fly to Japan using points and miles! )
If you fly out of Tokyo Narita (NRT) or Tokyo Haneda (HND), your first class journey starts in a Japan Airlines first class lounge. You won’t be disappointed if you’re looking for a place to relax, have a drink, enjoy some food, or do some work with fast Wi-Fi. Best of all, many Japan Airlines first class lounges feature a made-to-order sushi bar.
Their first class lounges even have self-pouring beer machines that have become a favorite of many luxury travelers.
Once you’re on board, Japan Airlines goes to great lengths to ensure you enjoy all of your food and drinks with true Japanese service. Japan Airlines is known for having some of the best food of any airline.
Although the JAL first class suite does not have doors, like those of Emirates first class , Singapore Suites , or the Etihad Apartments , the dividers provide plenty of privacy so you can feel right at home.
How to Fly Japan Airlines First Class on Points
As an Oneworld alliance member, you have many ways to book Japan Airlines first class award seats.
You can book first class award tickets on Japan Airlines through their Mileage Bank program , American Airlines AAdvantage, Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan, or one of their many other Oneworld partners. Take a look below at the best ways to book this flight.
The first option we will look at to fly Japan Airlines first class is with its own Mileage Bank program.
Mileage Bank uses a region-based award chart for its flights. This differs from the distance-based chart Mileage Bank uses for partner award redemptions. However, since we are only focusing on Japan Airlines first class flights using Mileage Bank, that award chart will not apply here.
Here is the award chart for award flights between North America and Japan in first class using Mileage Bank:
In addition to the region-based award chart, Mileage Bank also utilizes seasonality for its pricing, meaning that the number of miles depends on when you are flying. You can find the exact mileage required and the seasonality chart on Japan Airlines’ website for all Japan Airlines Mileage Bank redemptions.
During the low season, you can book one-way awards between North America and Japan for 70,000 miles.
It is worth noting that Mileage Bank does not allow for stopovers on its award redemptions, so you would not be able to stop in Japan and continue onward with your first class redemption.
You can book flights on Japan Airlines online by following the steps below:
- Go to the Japan Airlines website .
- Log in to your JAL Mileage Bank account.
- Select Book Award Tickets .
- Select JAL International Award Ticket Reservation .
- Enter your travel information, including travel dates, departure and destination airports, and whether you want to fly one-way or round-trip.
- Select Designate Date if your travel must be on the specific dates you have selected, or Award Reservation Calendar if you have flexible travel dates.
- Click Next .
- Ensure the flights you select have available seats and do not require waitlisting.
- If you select Award Reservation Calendar, you will see 7 dates for your departure and 7 for your return. Select the dates. You will be taken to your flight options for those dates.
- Confirm that you’re OK paying the Mileage Bank miles and taxes and fees required.
- Select your desired flights and hit Next (assign seat now) so you can select your seat and complete the booking process.
Earning Japan Airlines Miles
Earning Japan Airlines Mileage Bank miles is difficult, as the program only partners with Marriott Bonvoy. Marriott Bonvoy points transfer at a 3:1 ratio. With every 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points that you transfer, you receive 5,000 bonus miles.
Alaska Airlines’ Mileage Plan is another excellent way to fly Japan Airlines first class. The program revamped its award charts, including those for partner airlines, in late 2022. However, in March 2024, Alaska is switching to a distance-based award chart.
For now, one-way Japan Airlines first class flights can be booked starting at 70,000 Alaska miles. This is the same pricing that Japan Airlines charges using its Mileage Bank program.
However, the Mileage Plan allows for stopovers , even on one-way award redemptions, which can provide significantly more value when it comes to award redemptions. You can have a stopover in Tokyo for up to 364 days for Japan Airlines flights by using Alaska miles.
In addition to the stopover policy, it is easier to earn Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan miles than Japan Airlines Mileage Plan miles.
Check out our guide on the best ways to redeem Alaska Mileage Plan miles for maximum value .
To book, go to Alaska’s website and follow these simple steps:
- Go to the Alaska Airlines website .
- Sign in to your account.
- Search for your desired route (make sure you select Use Miles ).
- Select your desired flight and click Add To Cart .
- Pay the necessary taxes and fees and complete your booking.
You can also schedule a stopover on a one-way award ticket booked with Alaska miles.
Earning Alaska Airlines Miles
Earning Alaska Airlines miles can be difficult, as they only have 1 major transfer partner: Marriott Bonvoy. Marriott Bonvoy points transfer at a 3:1 ratio. With every 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points that you transfer, you receive 5,000 bonus miles.

Another excellent and, quite possibly the simplest, way to book Japan Airlines first class is through the American Airlines Advantage program.
American Airlines has devalued its program a few times over the years; however, plenty of value remains to be had. In most situations, the best value to get out of American miles comes from partner awards, which are not subject to dynamic pricing, unlike American’s flights.
For partner airlines, American has a published award chart. On the partner award chart, Asia is divided into 4 regions, and Japan is considered to be part of Asia Region 1.
Here is what American charges for one-way award flights on partner airlines between North America and Japan:
American charges 80,000 miles for first class seats on partner airlines, including Japan Airlines. Although the mileage requirements are slightly higher than with other programs, including Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan and Japan Airlines Mileage Bank, the miles are also significantly easier to earn.
Here’s what you need to do to book partner awards with American Airlines miles.
- Head over to American’s website .
- Click Redeem miles ,
- Enter your travel information, including the origin and destination airports, the number of passengers, and the departure date.
- Select a one-way or round-trip journey.
- Click Search .
- Confirm your award space.
- Pay the taxes and fees.
Earning American Airlines Miles
Earning American Airlines miles is relatively simple, as there are numerous American Airlines co-branded credit cards from Citibank and Barclays.
The AAdvantage program is also a transfer partner of Bilt Rewards and Marriott Bonvoy. Bilt Rewards transfer at a 1:1 ratio. Transfers from Marriott Bonvoy occur at a 3:1 ratio. However, there is no 5,000-mile bonus if you transfer 60,000 Bonvoy points , unlike other programs.
Here are Citibank American Airlines co-branded credit cards we recommend:

Using American Airlines’ search engine is a great way to search for Oneworld partner availability.
You can also book flights on Japan Airlines with any of their other Oneworld partners, including British Airways. Unfortunately, the redemption rates on these other carriers are often quite poor.
For example, British Airways uses a distance-based award chart. Flights between the U.S. and Japan are typically quite far, meaning you need to use a lot more miles to fly between the continents. Typically, the best value to get out of British Airways Avios comes from short-haul flights.
First, let’s take a look at some standard awards between the U.S. and Japan. After that, we will look at more creative ways to book Japan Airlines in first class.
If you’re flying from major U.S. hubs, including New York City (JFK), Chicago (ORD), or Los Angeles (LAX), your cheapest option is 140,000 Japan Airlines miles or 140,000 Alaska miles round-trip. You could also book with 160,000 American miles round-trip.
How to Earn Enough Miles for Japan Airlines First Class
If you are ready to book a flight in Japan Airlines first class but don’t have enough miles for the itinerary you want, there are plenty of ways to earn more.
You can earn Marriott points and transfer those to Japan Airlines, American Airlines, and Alaska Airlines. Marriott Bonvoy points transfer at a 3:1 rate to all those programs. For every 60,000 Marriott points you transfer with Japan Airlines or Alaska Airlines, you receive an extra 5,000 miles bonus. You don’t get that bonus with transfers with American Airlines.
Citi offers plenty of American Airlines co-branded credit cards that can quickly earn you lots of American Airlines miles.
Finding a first class award seat on Japan Airlines is not always easy, but if you’re flexible with your travel dates, you can create a fantastic trip.
As soon as you have an idea when you’d like to travel, start searching. You might be able to find space many months before departure, but Japan Airlines might not release award space until days before you want to depart. Flexibility is important when it comes to Japan Airlines premium cabin award redemptions.
What Makes Japan Airlines a Great Redemption?
Flying first class with Japan Airlines is a memorable experience, thanks to the great seats and top-notch service and offerings. Champagne lovers get a chance to sip on one of the most expensive Champagnes in the world, for example.
The cabin crew in Japan Airlines first class is second to none. They take great pride in creating an amazing flight experience for passengers, so you can sit back, relax with a glass of Champagne, and enjoy the flight.
Speaking of Champagne, several airlines around the world serve Dom Perigon, Krug, etc. But Japan Airlines stands alone in serving Louis Roederer Cristal 2009, which retails for over $300 per bottle. Needless to say, you won’t be disappointed.
Another huge perk of Japan Airlines first class is the liquor selection. You’re given the opportunity to try Hibiki 17, an increasingly rare and world-class whisky. Because Hibiki 17 has been discontinued, the demand is extraordinary now. Bottles can retail anywhere from $750 to $1,000.
Your first class suite provides a comfortable seat that converts into a nice lie-flat bed. Additionally, you have space to move around and enough privacy to make you feel right at home.
When you fly with Japan Airlines, you can expect an exceptional first class experience . Whether you’re flying out of Tokyo Narita or Tokyo Haneda, you get a chance to experience Japan Airlines’ incredible first class lounges. Once on board, it only gets better as you settle into your suite and see the first class cabin crew in action.
While you can use Japan Airlines’ Mileage Bank program to book your award tickets, you may be better off using American Airlines AAdvantage or Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan to book. These miles are significantly easier to earn.
Granted, it’s not always an easy award ticket to book, but you will be thrilled to put in that little extra effort. Japan Airlines award space can be hard to come by, but it is worth taking the time to look.
That said, you may need to be flexible and book either well in advance or at the last minute to score Japan Airlines award seats.

Throwing himself into what became an extensive research project, Spencer spent 3-4 hours per night learning everything he could about frequent flyer miles over the course of several months (he thinks this is normal). He runs Straight to the Points, an award-seat alert platform.

9 Ways Flying First Class Can Actually Save You Money, Travel Experts Say
Posted: October 12, 2023 | Last updated: October 12, 2023
After rebounding from the pandemic's travel lull, people are finally hitting the skies again . Unfortunately, as travel rates have increased, so has the cost of flying. According to a 2023 report from the travel company Kayak, travel costs are currently up 35 percent compared to last year. However, that doesn't mean you can't save money while traveling—even if you plan to book a first-class ticket. We checked in with travel and finance experts who shared their top tips for keeping your money in your wallet the next time you spring for a luxury trip. Read on to learn the nine ways that flying first class can actually save you some money in the long run.
RELATED: 11 Worst Days and Times to Fly on an Airplane .
1 You'll save on baggage expenses.
One way that traveling first class can help save you money is on your luggage. Unlike most coach tickets, first-class tickets regularly include at least one or two checked bags for no extra cost.
"While a first-class ticket might be more expensive, the included amenities can sometimes help you save some money you otherwise would have been spending on things like luggage fees," says Carter Seuthe , CEO of My Credit Summit . "With some first-class tickets, you might find luggage fees waived, so if you're planning to fly with a lot of bags or bags that might be subject to excess fees, you can save some money there."
2 You'll save by accruing more travel points.
If you're using the right credit card, spending more on a first-class ticket can save you money on later trips, says Suzanne Bucknam , an experienced travel expert and CEO of the travel company Connecticut Explorer . "If you use a credit card that helps you accrue points when you fly first class, like the United Mastercard, you accrue more rewards points to be used toward future travel," she explains.

3 You'll save by boosting your airline loyalty benefits.
Similar to the points you can earn with the right credit card, you can also save money while flying first class by staying loyal to one airline. Though this is true of flying coach too, opting for first class will expedite the process.
"Many airlines have loyalty programs that provide perks and benefits to frequent flyers, such as free first-class upgrades," explains Justin Crabbe , CEO of the private jet charter service Jettly . "Travelers who fly with the same airline on a regular basis and accumulate points or miles can potentially save money on future flights by redeeming these rewards."
4 You'll save on the airport lounge.
If you were prepared to shell out money to use the airport lounge, a first-class ticket can often save you that expense.

5 You may save by booking through a travel agent.
Sometimes how you book your plane ticket can determine how much you pay for it. "Travel agents frequently have access to discounted first-class fares that the general public does not have," says Crabbe. "Travelers can potentially save money on first-class tickets by using a travel agent or taking advantage of discounted fares."
Additionally, you may be able to save money by booking a first-class ticket over the phone by calling the airline directly, rather than booking online.
6 You'll save on hotels for long layovers.
If the only alternative to a first-class ticket is to have a lengthy layover that requires a hotel stay, you may also be able to save money by spending more upfront. A direct flight could be more cost-effective than combining a flight and hotel, so it's important to compare the total expenditures, rather than just the ticket cost, Kroeger suggests.
7 You'll save if you need to change your itinerary.
Changing your travel plans once you've booked your tickets can be extremely costly. Compared to flying coach, first-class tickets tend to be more flexible, says Gareth Boyd , co-founder of Frequent Flyer Credit Cards .

8 You'll save by getting a last-minute upgrade.
Another way you can save while flying first class is by going for a last-minute upgrade or flying standby.
"Airlines hate to have unsold seats and will gladly give steep discounts to standby flyers to take any open seat on the plane—including first-class seats," says Ann Martin , the director of operations for CreditDonkey . "This is, admittedly, a gamble, but it's one that can pay off, and even if you don't get a first-class ticket, you're still getting a good deal."
9 You'll save time—and time is money.

This First Class Seat on Etihad Is Basically an Apartment — and You Can Now Book It on a NYC Flight

One of the most opulent ways to fly in the sky is back — think a three-room suite in first class and a bar and lounging area on a double-decker jet.
On Monday, Etihad Airways brought its Airbus A380 back into service on one of two of its daily flights between New York and Abu Dhabi. The aircraft, which was set to retire amid the pandemic, will now connect U.S. travelers to hundreds of destinations worldwide via Etihad’s world-class terminal, known as one of T+L readers’ favorite international airports .
What distinguishes Etihad from other international carriers in the world is a cabin that’s even better than first class known as “The Residence.” Beyond champagne and caviar, this first-class-above-first-class product has a private living room, bedroom, and ensuite bathroom, accommodating up to two passengers.

“We want to ensure guests arrive in the Big Apple feeling refreshed and at ease,” CEO of Etihad, Antonoaldo Neves, shared in a statement. “This commitment is crucial for all our travelers, not least our corporate clients who rely on us for business travel, and we have timed our A380 services so customers arrive in New York or Abu Dhabi in time to make good use of the business day, or for their onward connections.”
Etihad offers four distinct cabin classes onboard the aircraft to ensure maximum comfort for the 13-hour journey. Even back in economy, where there are more than 400 seats, passengers have their personal inflight entertainment screens and fixed headrests.
There are 70 lie-flat business class seats onboard located on the upper deck of the aircraft, where premium cabin passengers have access to a bar and lounging area. In first class, there are just nine fully enclosed pods with a separate ottoman that turns into an impressive 80-foot bed and access to the private shower room onboard.
Travelers can find the A380 on Etihad’s service departing New York at 3:30 p.m. and arriving at 12:30 p.m. the next day in Abu Dhabi. On the return, the flight departs at 3:10 a.m. and lands in New York at 9:30 a.m.
