Equal parts conservation area and safari, the park's 500 acres are home to bison, zebra, white rhinos, chimpanzees and, of course, lions. Sitting 21 miles west of downtown West Palm Beach, Lion Country Safari is the first cageless drive-thru zoo in the country. Although it's a bit of a drive, it's well worth the trip to see nearly 1,000 animals walk freely around your car. With animals from six continents, 90 different species can be seen here, including lions, Asiatic water buffalo, tapirs, ostriches and giraffes. There's also a walk-through portion of the park called Adventure Park, where travelers can feed giraffes and birds, play miniature golf, enjoy paddle boats and water park rides and more.

Past travelers especially appreciated the friendly staff, well maintained grounds, and unique opportunity to see animals up close. To cut costs, pass on park food and bring packed lunches instead.

Lion Country Safari's drive-thru adventure is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekends and holidays. Public transportation is not available within the immediate area, so driving to (and within) the attraction is required. Regular admission costs $49 for visitors 10 and older, $37 for children ages 3 to 9 and free for children 2 and younger. All general admission tickets include access to the drive-thru and walk-thru portions of the park. Premium e xperiences , such as giraffe painting and flamingo feedings, are available for an additional fee. In addition to the attraction's various animal exhibits, guests have access to restrooms, gift shops, restaurants, picnic areas and water rides inside Adventure Park.

Lion Country Safari Florida is a Drive-through Safari Park

The drive-through or walk-through amusement park Lion Country Safari is located on 600 acres in Loxahatchee, Palm Beach County, Florida.

Founded in 1967, Lion Country Safari claims to be the first cage-free zoo in the United States.

It features an array of exotic animals , such as tigers and elephants, and the entire family will enjoy the park.

The park offers animal habitats, rides, and a petting zoo. There’s also a restaurant , shops, and souvenir stores to purchase safari-themed items.

You can’t expect a lot of entertainment, but you will definitely be entertained!

The park offers a discounted Annual Pass that provides unlimited access for a year.

While the drive-through safari ends at the walk-through Safari World, you can stay the night at a campground adjacent to the park’s 320-acre preserve.

While you’re at it, you can feed the giraffes, and they’ll even grab a lettuce leaf with their tongues!

If you want to get closer to the animals, you can stay in one of the tent sites at the KOA campground next to Lion Country Safari.

Who started Lion Country Safari in Florida?

Founded in 1967 by South African and British entrepreneurs, Lion Country Safari is the first drive-through safari park in the U.S. and the first “cage-less zoo” in the country.

The park is open all year round thanks to the warm climate of Florida.

It is a great place to see wildlife, including lions and other exotic animals. Its long hours and secluded location are just two of the advantages.

In addition to lions, you’ll find other exotic animals. The park’s lions have been portrayed on TV in a series known as Frasier the Sensuous .

The series starred Sarah Vaughan as the titular lion and aired in the 1970s. But it didn’t make any money, and Lion Country Safari’s owners are now looking for ways to make money.

They plan to sell 300 “wild” animals worth more than $200000 each.

The park has grown considerably since the 1970s. The attraction now has more than 500,000 visitors a year, compared with only one fatality.

And that’s after adjusting for the fact that in its first few years, regulations were a bit more lax. In the late 1960s, the company had to reprimand a driver who decided to get out of his car and take a picture of a lion.

Visiting Lion Country Safari in Florida may seem like a good idea, but it’s not as simple as driving around the grounds. While you’ll find plenty of people in a group, the drivers in this group usually drive independently.

There are many ways to experience Lion Country’s wildlife up close, but it’s worth noting that you’ll need a car to do so. You can rent a vehicle or drive your own car.

For a fee, can rent a vehicle to get around the park. Once you’ve reached the park, you can take a drive-through safari on an audio tour.

The park has excellent public transportation, and the Metro Rail bus runs close enough for you to walk.

It’s Home to over 900 Animals

Lion Country Safari in Florida is a 4-mile wildlife preserve. It features more than 900 animals, including lions, giraffes, ostriches, apes, and chimpanzees.

Guests must keep their windows and doors closed and are not permitted to drive convertibles.

Picnicking is permitted at this animal park, which also provides a convenient place to eat.

The safari takes about three hours to complete.

You may encounter some of these animals as they drive through the zoo. This animal sanctuary offers over 900 different species of animals and features five rides that allow guests to see all of the animals.

Sure, there’s plenty of wildlife in Florida, but have you ever viewed a giraffe from the comfort of your car?

You won’t find big screens or bags of popcorn at these drive-ins, but they're action-packed and provide lots of entertainment. Silence your cell phone and enjoy the show at these drive-through zoos in Florida.

1. J. N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge , Sanibel Island

Sunbathing gators, green herons, white ibis and a crocodile call this four-mile Wildlife Drive home. Roseate spoonbills can be found here year-round.

2. Lion Country Safari , West Palm Beach

Florida’s only drive-through safari boasts 800-plus animals, including wildebeests, rhinos and the world’s largest herd of captive zebras. But the giraffes steal the show at Lion Country Safari.

More rain in the forecast after flooding cripples parts of South Florida, state of emergency declared

 A channel of moist air will continue to tumble over Florida through at least Friday with as much as 8 more inches of rain possible in some areas but especially focused in spots south of Palm Beach County where the worst flooding occurred Wednesday.

National Weather Service meteorologists in Miami said to expect two more days of “multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms” although chances for tornadoes have lessened.

An EF-1 tornado with winds as high as 95 mph hit Hobe Sound and Jupiter Island on Wednesday, uprooting trees and tossing debris along a 1.7-mile-long swath near Bridge Road, according to the NWS office in Melbourne.

Record rainfall wreaks havoc: South Florida experiences "life threatening" flooding, stalled cars, delayed flights

Although no injuries were reported, a pick-up truck was pushed onto railroad tracks along Dixie Highway, Jupiter Island was briefly inaccessible, and Hobe Sound Elementary School temporarily lost power, according to TC Palm.

Near Bridge Road, David Anderson's home suffered damage that included a blown-in garage door and the roof collapsed.

 “It's leaking all over the place," TC Palm quotes Anderson as saying. "It destroyed the whole nursery behind us."

The highest rainfall amounts in Palm Beach County from early Tuesday through Thursday morning were measured northeast of Lion Country Safari in Loxahatchee with 9.5 inches tallied by the NWS.

Other areas with high rainfall included Boca Raton (7.65 inches), Delray Beach (6.86 inches), Lantana (6.25 inches), Wellington (5.93 inches), West Palm Beach (5.09 inches), Lake Worth (5.04 inches), Jupiter (4.81 inches) and Palm Beach Gardens (4.49 inches).

In Broward County, the highest rainfall was in Hallandale Beach, where 19.39 inches of rain fell in about a 48-hour period through early Thursday.

"In this situation, conditions may deteriorate quickly," said NWS Miami meteorologist Tony Reynes on Thursday. "There may be some sunshine this morning but it can change. We want to keep a very close eye on the vulnerable areas over the next 24 hours."

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport was open Thursday morning but travelers were asked to check with their airlines for flight updates.

“Our terminal and airport exit roadways are clear,” the airport said on social media, noting, however, that a section of East Perimeter Road was closed because of flooding.  

The heavy rainfall and flooding triggered a state of emergency declaration by Gov. Ron DeSantis for Broward, Collier, Lee, Miami-Dade and Sarasota counties. DeSantis also ordered the Florida National Guard and Florida State Guard activated "as needed."

The declaration frees agencies from red tape in responding to the emergency and allows local governments to access money in the state's Emergency Preparedness and Response Fund.

2024 hurricane season: 5 tips to stay sane and safe in face of frightful forecast

Through Thursday morning, State Farm reported it had already received about 300 auto claims associated with the torrential downpours.

FOX Weather hurricane specialist Bryan Norcross likened the weather pattern over Florida to the atmospheric rivers that are common along the west coast of the United States.

“It's a relatively narrow band of moisture squeezed between two competing weather systems,” Norcross said in his Hurricane Intel blog. “The warmer-than-normal waters to the south are undoubtedly enhancing the amount of moisture flowing over South Florida.”

The National Hurricane Center is watching two areas for potential tropical development. An area of low pressure that is helping pull moisture into the state is now in the Atlantic Ocean off the east coast of Florida. It has a 20% chance of becoming a named storm over the next two days.

A second area of low pressure in the Bay of Campeche is expected to form this weekend or early next week and has a 40% chance of becoming a tropical cyclone.

The first two names on the 2024 hurricane list are Alberto and Beryl.

At this point, AccuWeather lead hurricane forecaster Alex DaSilva said he doesn’t expect the spot in the Bay of Campeche to impact Florida. He said it’s more likely going to cause heavy rain in Mexico and possibly in Texas as far north as Houston.

DaSilva said in addition to record warm sea surface temperatures, the depth of the ocean heat in the Gulf of Mexico is concerning. When water is deeply warm, it means a tropical cyclone won’t churn up cooler water from below which can limit its growth.

“In the western Caribbean, there are areas right now where the 80-degree temperature line extends as deep as 300 to 400 feet below the surface,” DaSilva said. “That is something we would expect to see in August.”

Tropical cyclones generally need water temperatures of 80 degrees or higher to form.

Breaking: Potential Tropical Cyclone One could become Alberto by Wednesday

A burgeoning area of low pressure in the Bay of Campeche became Potential Tropical Cyclone One on Monday, and is likely to earn the name Alberto over the next couple of days.

The sloppy swirl about 470 miles southeast of Brownsville, Texas is the first to be identified by the National Hurricane Center this season as a potential tropical cyclone and triggered a tropical storm watch along the Texas coast from Port O-Connor southward to the mouth of the Rio Grande River.

As of Monday afternoon, the system had 40 mph winds and was moving north-northwest at 7 mph. It is not expected to strengthen to a hurricane.

The NHC began labeling potential tropical cyclones in 2017 so that it could issue watches and warnings for systems they believe are going to form near a coastline but haven't yet gained a closed center of low pressure.

The NHC is also watching an area off the east coast of Florida that it is giving a 30% chance of developing over the next seven days. An area of low pressure is expected to form a few hundred miles northeast of the central Bahamas in a day or two and could become a named tropical system as it moves west or west-northwest toward Florida or the southeastern U.S.

The system off the east coast, regardless of development, is expected to inch closer to Florida on Thursday or Friday leading National Weather Service meteorologists in Miami to up the chances of rain to 60% mid week.

But "forecast uncertainty remains very high for this part of the forecast," NWS meteorologists wrote.

Playing a role in whether the system develops and where it goes is a ridge of high pressure parked over the mid-Atlantic states and another area of low pressure in the western Atlantic Ocean.

"While the exact details still remain very uncertain due to differences in guidance, the potential for heavy downpours for the middle to the end of the week will lead to the potential for localized flooding concerns to return to portions of South Florida," NWS meteorologists wrote.

The soggy forecast follows days of relentless showers last week that left areas of Broward, Miami-Dade and Collier counties with more than 20 inches of rain, flooded streets and triggered a state of emergency declaration from Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Palm Beach County's highest rainfall was measured near Lion Country Safari where over 72 hours about 10.5 inches fell.
