Snowboard Women Anna Martinez (FRA) went one better than her second place at the Verbier Pro, claiming her first win on the FWT. She kept her speed and fluidity throughout her run, stacking the features that included some sizeable airs up top and technical riding mid-run. Estelle Rizzolio (FRA) and Erin Sauve (CAN) finished second and third, respectively, both throwing down solid runs.

“I am really happy with this win and looking forward to Georgia—I hope for the same result! I am so stoked to be here in Kicking Horse; it’s a sick resort.” —Anna Martinez, 2024 Kicking Horse Golden BC Pro Winner

Snowboard Men Victor de Le Rue (FRA) stamped his authority on the T1 South face and extended his lead over the rest of the field. He wasted no time getting into his run, airing into an exposed area before sending a huge double and a smooth backside 360. He made short work of the rest of the face and claimed a memorable victory. Michael Mawn (USA) found redemption after a fall in Verbier with an aggressive display of freeriding to claim second, followed by Timm Schröder (GER) in third.

“Really awesome to manage to take the win again. Conditions were tricky and a bit stressful to ride properly, but I had a good feature up top, which I am proud of. I really like this place; Canada is especially very special. I am in a good position now, meaning I can free my mind and maybe try some other moves in the next comp.” —Victor de Le Rue, 2024 Kicking Horse Golden BC Pro Winner

Ski Women Young rookie Astrid Cheylus (FRA) didn’t take her foot off the pedal, lining up two massive cliffs and stacking the features amidst aggressive freeride turns. She then risked it all, laying out a backflip off the wind lip at the bottom and putting it to bolts, celebrating a maiden FWT victory as she crossed the finish line. Compatriot and long-time friend Manon Loschi (FRA) finished less than three points behind—also backflipping to perfection—with Hedvig Wessel (NOR) rounding off the podium in third.

“I don’t know if this is real or a dream; I am so stoked. The conditions were better than I thought, and it wasn’t the line I had planned, but the little lip at the end was calling me. It is my first time in Kicking Horse and I like it. I look forward to Georgia and might try something bigger, and will try to enjoy it even more.” — Astrid Cheylus, 2024 Kicking Horse Golden BC Pro Winner

Ski Men Max Hitzig (GER) made it two for two this season, delivering an electrifying performance to race ahead in the overall rankings. He showcased his powerful style of freeriding, combining a deep straight air into a picture-perfect 360, then choosing an express route to the finish with multiple drops. Oscar Mandin (FRA) wasn’t far behind in second, going warp speed with multiple huge airs and a titanic backflip. Marcus Goguen (CAN) backed up his second place showing here last year with a third.

“I am super excited and stoked with the win. Conditions were better than expected, but I tried to ski a safe line, so I was happy to finish. Travelling with my buddy Vale [Valentin Rainer] is so much fun, and competing here has been amazing. Looking forward to Georgia. They have had a lot of snow and conditions look great, so I will try to stay in the top spot.” —Max Hitzig, 2024 Kicking Horse Golden BC Pro Winner

Stop #3 of Freeride World Tour 2022 ran to successful completion in Kicking Horse Golden, BC this Saturday with challenging conditions and high drama for the Tour’s rankings. With the results from Kicking Horse confirmed, a select group of riders are now qualified to the FWT Finals.

  • Huge performances in all categories despite last-minute venue change and challenging conditions.
  • Rookies and Wildcards continue to dominate; tour legends stumble in rankings.
  • Top-ranked riders are now qualified to the FWT Finals.

The drama started before the competition even began. 115km/h winds affected the mountains around Kicking Horse Golden, B.C. two days before the event and the planned venue, Ozone, bore the brunt of the wind and was left in poor condition. Following consultation between the riders, guides and organizers, the decision was made to change venues to T1 South. This change required an impressive all-night effort from organizers to move the entire competition and production infrastructures to the other side of the resort. The conditions on the new venue were challenging, but with dry conditions across much of North America, it was still a huge victory to complete another successful event.

Snowboard Women

The day began with Snowboard Women, with Erika Vikander (USA) grabbing her second event victory of the 2022 season. Vikander put down a solid run, linking several airs with her signature stylish riding. She was followed by Katie Anderson (CAN), whose high-speed, powerful style made quick work of the challenging face. Former World Champion Manuela Mandl (AUT) rounded out the podium in 3rd place, with an impressively technical entry from start #2.

“The snow was difficult but I’m so happy to put down another clean run! Making the cut with the golden bib is really exciting, and I can’t wait to get to the next events in Austria and Switzerland.” – Erika Vikander RESULTS

Snowboard Men

The next category was Snowboard Men, with Camille Armand (FRA) taking the win. Armand has been on the podium at all three events of 2022; he previously placed 3rd in Ordino Arcalís and 2nd place in Baqueira Beret. In 2nd place was FWT veteran Ludovic Guillot-Diat (FRA), who rode a unique line down the rider’s right side of the venue. Cody Bramwell (GBR) finished in 3rd place with a run that featured a massive 360 at the top and full-speed riding down the center of the face. “I feel good to take the win today. I’m also happy because now my ranking for the season gives me a lot of confidence for the upcoming events. Am I aiming for the world title? We’ll see!“ — Camille Armand

Ski Women again put on an incredible show, and tour rookie Lily Bradley (USA) emerging victorious. Bradley looked unaffected by the tough conditions as she put down a smooth run with a technical entrance and several fluidly-linked airs. Following up her victory in Ordino Arcalís with another solid result was Jess Hotter (NZL), who took second place with a characteristically hard-charging run. 3rd place went to the young Canadian Olivia McNeill (CAN). “I want to to push my level by adding more tricks to my runs, and it’s also important to me to be a good representative for young queer women in our sport. ” — Lily Bradley

The final category of the day was Ski Men and the drama and action could not have been more intense. Defending World Champion Kristofer Turdell (SWE) needed a strong result and he did not disappoint, with a balanced run showing his smooth style, big-mountain prowess and freestyle ability that awarded him 3rd place. Max Palm (SWE) was able to bounce back from a brutal crash in Ordino Arcalís to put down another incredible run for 2nd place. Max’s event-winning double backflip in Baqueira Beret was the first time that trick had been successfully landed in FWT history, and he pulled it off again for another podium finish in Canada. But stealing the show for his second victory in a row was tour rookie Maxime Chabloz (SUI), who put down a freestyle-heavy run featuring two 360s, a cork 720 and a huge backflip to take the win. “My plan today was to go for a purely freestyle run. I saw Max’s double backflip and knew I had to go for it, so I tried to take my jumps as big as possible, grab every air, and I added an air at the bottom no one else hit. I’m dedicating this win to my brother Yannick, who was recently injured competing in the Olympics in China. ” — Maxime Chabloz

As the intense action of the competition concluded, riders experienced some of the most emotional moments of the season, with the new overall ranking determining The Cut. The top 25 riders (11 ski men, 6 ski women, 5 snowboard men, 3 snowboard women) are now qualified to the FWT Finals, while those who placed below the qualification line were relegated to the FWQ Finals. Perhaps most surprising amongst the riders not advancing to FWT Finals was two-time world champion Victor De Le Rue (FRA). Despite a 2nd place finish in Ordino Arcalís, poor results in the other two events were insufficient to secure qualification for the defending champion.

Currently leading the Snowboard rankings are Camille Armand (FRA) and Erika Vikander (USA). In the Ski categories, Maxime Chabloz (SUI) and Jess Hotter (NZL) are at the top of the pack. These riders will be wearing the yellow jersey as the tour heads to the first of the two FWT Finals events in Fieberbrunn, Austria (15-20 March). Although some riders have distinguished themselves as standouts, the race for the world title remains wide open, and champions will ultimately be decided at the final event of the year in Verbier, Switzerland (26 March - 3 April).

Riders will now take advantage of the short break to rest, recover and prepare before the next competition. Follow along on social media and make freerideworldtour.com your home for in-depth coverage and live broadcasts in the leadup to the dramatic final stage of the Freeride World Tour!

Freeride World Tour ’24 Kicking Horse Stop Two Recap

freeride world tour kicking horse results

Featured Image: Dom Daher | Skier: Astrid Cheylus

Oooh, Canada! The land of Tim Hortons, Geddy Lee and dreamy deep snow. What better place on Earth is there? Specifically, is there anywhere better than Kicking Horse, British Columbia, where we witnessed stop two of the 2024 Freeride World Tour (FWT)? The competition had a lot of pressure riding on it, as we already have seen two cancellations and one relocation for comps this season. But Kicking Horse provided good snow and a lineup of riders that had more juice than a toddler after a Red Bull tasting.

The usual competition face at Kicking Horse, the Ozone Venue, was out of commission today. The official description of the Ozone sounded less than optimal, as the press release regarding the venue read, “The top section was fine, but the middle section had very poor snow conditions with inconsistent quality, ranging from a thick crust to decent, and then to sugary snow over 50 cm deep, directly on top of rocks. The bottom was littered with ice cookies the size of watermelons.” Yucko. FWT organizers made the call to move the scene to a zone known as T1 South, a beautiful section that, while littered with trees, has plenty of cliffs, gaps and straight lines. We were even treated to comments in the booth from FWT veteran and Canada’s own Tom Peiffer , making this stop a true must-watch. We saw backflips, tomahawks, huge drops, plenty of 3s to go around (shoutout to Marcus Goguen for racking ’em up) and a plethora of other action, so let’s dive in.

In the Women’s Ski Field, it was a day for the young guns. The snowpack was variable throughout the face, which caught a couple of riders off guard. Punchy landings and thick turns were abundant, but it didn’t deter all! Three out of the top five finishers were in their first or second year on the tour, showing how much talent is pouring into the field lately. In third place was the veteran Hedvig Wessel. She started off with a gigantic cliff at the very start of her run, barely clearing the rocks in the landing. It was an incredibly impressive start, but she blazed through the rest of the run, unfortunately appearing to miss a few features she was looking to hit. She was still one of only three riders in the field who were awarded a score above 80. Second place belonged to the Red Bull rookie Manon Loschi. The flying Frenchie put together a fantastic run, complete with a technical air, a huge 3 and a backflip off the wind lip near the base. If it wasn’t for the backslap off the 3, she may well have ended up in first. However, the stop spot belonged to Manon’s good friend and riding partner, Astrid Cheylus. Also a rookie on the Tour, Cheylus won the judges’ hearts by scoring huge in the Line selection category as well as Air & Style. She took on several large drops and topped off the technical run with a backflip at the end. Vive la France!

“I don’t know if this is real or a dream; I am so stoked. The conditions were better than I thought, and it wasn’t the line I had planned, but the little lip at the end was calling me. It is my first time in Kicking Horse and I like it. I look forward to Georgia and might try something bigger and will try to enjoy it even more.”

– Astrid Cheylus, 2024 Kicking Horse Golden BC Pro winner

In the Men’s Ski Field, we saw a familiar face on top of the throne. It was a bit of a shake-up underneath that, however, as it was a scattered mix of veterans and rookies throughout. The tricky conditions rang true as we saw five riders not be able to finish their runs, including defending champion Maxime Chabloz and FWT wildcard rider AND Whistler legend Stan Rey, who logged the tomahawk of the year . Third place belonged to the Canadian Marcus Goguen, who threw down a wildly entertaining run. The 19-year-old put down three left 3s (try saying that five times fast) in the first 15 seconds of his line. He then diverged into un-skied territory and found a massive cliff ride for the diving. It was a beautiful showing of freeride at its best. Just sneaking into second place by a point and a half was Oscar Mandin. He had a line filled with speed and air time, complete with a massive backflip in the middle of the face and a directional pin out the bottom. With a few precise movements, he earned his spot on the podium. This was the third medal for France on the day in the ski fields! The gold belonged to none other than Max Hitzig. The German powerhouse, defending champion from the previous Verbier stop, clinched a 94.00! It was a blink-and-you-‘ll-miss-it line, reminding everyone of the entertaining style that Hitzig always brings. He had a few beautiful airs, but it was the giant right 3 to bolts that sent the crowd roaring.

“I am super excited and stoked with the win. Conditions were better than expected, but I tried to ski a safe line, so I was happy to finish. Traveling with my buddy Vale [Valentin Rainer] is so much fun, and competing here has been amazing. Looking forward to Georgia. They have had a lot of snow, and conditions look great, so I will try to stay in the top spot.”

Freeride World Tour Kicking Horse Golden BC Pro Wrap-Up – Recap, Results, Highlights, and More

The Freeride World Tour Kicking Horse Golden BC Pro is over and what a week it was. Although the snow conditions weren’t amazing, the sun was out all week and the athletes all made the best of the conditions, with some amazing runs from both categories.

freeride world tour kicking horse results

The sun shone on Kicking Horse Mountain Resort’s Terminator 1 South face on February 15th, 2024. Spectators of all ages braved the traverse across the ridge from the Golden Eagle Express Gondola to get a prime spot in the sun to watch the action. Snow conditions were not ideal, with 15cm of fresh snow covering a rain crust. The women’s ski category started the skiers off and the diverse field all skied superbly with minimal crashes. Men’s ski closed out the day with 20 of the world’s best male skiers going head to head in a battle for the ages for the podium and the all-important points in the season leaderboard. In true Canadian fashion, the skiers who stood on the podium at the end of the day were given hockey sticks and jean jackets as well as their well-earned hardware

This year’s event was packed with highlights but here are a couple that we thought stood out

Stan Rey’s Tomahawk

First out of the start gate for the Ski Men category, wildcard Stan Rey had a perfect run until he took a line far right of the face to find a double-drop cliff that nobody had even looked at. He skied the cliff perfectly, bouncing off the platform of the second cliff, grabbing safety, and then landed…

Astrid Cheylus’s Run

Astrid’s run was a heater from top to bottom. She lined up two massive cliffs with super aggressive freeride turns. At the end of her run, she risked it all by adding in a backflip for the crowd.

Oscar Mandin’s Backflip

By far the biggest trick of the day, Oscar went to the moon with this backflip.

SKIER Team Thoughts

What a week. It was awesome to get invited to the event and get to know the athletes at dinners and social events hosted by the sponsors. The competition itself was great. Although we were worried about the snow conditions, many athletes reported that the snow was better than it looked. There were some issues with scrubbing speed as we predicted and there was also a fair few instances where athlete’s skis got caught up in ice crust and small obstacles hiding under the surface. Shout out to the Freeride World Tour, Golden Tourism , Pit Viper , Peak Performance , and Whitetooth Brewing Co . for putting on a stellar event!

Stay tuned for the SKIER interview series from the event. Here is a sneak peak!

The Freeride World Tour (FWT) made a thrilling stop at Kicking Horse, Golden, BC, for its second event of the 2024 season, bringing together the world’s elite freeriders under the clear blue skies and challenging conditions of the Purcell Mountains. The competition, held on February 15, 2024 , saw athletes from across the globe put on a spectacular display of skill, bravery, and innovation on the T1 South face, known for its firm base topped with a fresh layer of powder.

In the Snowboard Women’s category, France’s Anna Martinez outshone her competition, taking home her first win of the season with a blend of speed, fluidity, and technical prowess. Freeride World Tour Kicking Horse Results and Recap

freeride world tour kicking horse results

UPDATE: Competition CONFIRMED for tomorrow 1/6 to re-stage the Hakuba event at Kicking Horse. Check back for more action!

After yet again playing the waiting game for several days, the world's best freeriders showed up on the Freeride World Tour stage at the brand-new Kicking Horse venue. And by brand-new, we mean truly virgin. After a longstanding permanent closure, the infamous “Ozone” face right outside the resort boundary was opened to competition. Kicking Horse and the Purcell Range may be better known for endless pillow lines and insanely deep blower pow, but this completion face rivals those found strewn across the Alps, featuring 50+ degree fall lines, huge cliffs, and plenty of trickable features.

Athletes arrived late last week to overcast skies, heavy snow, and a weather window that did not look promising. The season’s first competition in Hakuba, Japan was postponed following a week of storms that left the venue too dangerous to compete on. Luckily, a weather window opened early this morning and the competition was called on.

Snowboard men dropped first, followed by snowboard women, ski women, and finally ski men. Conditions were near-perfect, with close to a foot of fresh snow falling in the last three days. That fresh snow did lead some riders to biting off a bit more than they could chew, as it barely covered many of rocks on the face, making many lines look rideable when they were in fact not. However, the riders donned their send hats anyway and put on quite a show.

Click here for a full replay of the event.

Local legend Logan Pehota (who's won a few things here and there, like Kicking Horse's infamous Wrangle the Chute comp) took home the Men’s Ski title by starting off his run with an enormous 360 and keeping his speed to send a cliff everyone else had simply skied around, barely edging out Markus Eder’s freestyle prowess and Ivan Malakhov’s comically large sends. Logan's 98-point score is one of the highest ever in FWT history. Here’s a shoutout to George Rodney for sending it into oblivion, despite the crater and no points!

The Women’s Ski title went to the current defending champion, Austria’s Eva Walkner, for absolutely charging through the steepest parts of the face. Italy’s Arianna Tricomi and Canada’s own Kylie Sivell took second and third respectively.

The small but stacked Women’s Snowboard field was dominated by Austrian Andrea Mandl, who was the first to venture into the big cliffs on the far lookers right of the venue. Russia’s Anna Orlova and France’s Marion Haerty put down heavy lines for second and third respectively.

Finally, the Men’s Snowboard title was taken by Alaskan Davey Baird, edging out Austrian Thomas Feuerstein and fellow American Blake Hamm. This must have been a dream run for the eight snowboarders, dropping in first into fresh tracks on such an enormous face.
