2024 Presidents Cup: Friday's Round 2 results; Saturday's Round 3 tee times

The 2024 Presidents Cup is underway and the United States jumped out to a big lead after winning all five matches Thursday during the Round 1 four-ball session. A comeback by the International team seemed unlikely considering the Americans entered as heavy favorites , but Friday's Round 2 foursomes have made this event interesting heading into the weekend.

Golfers on the U.S. and International teams alternated shots during the five matches scheduled for Friday at The Royal Montreal Club.

U.S. captain Jim Furyk turned to a familiar Ryder Cup duo with Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay teamed up for Round 2. Max Homa and Brian Harmon, who went 2-1 together at last year's Ryder Cup, made their 2024 Presidents Cup debut together Friday after not being used in Round 1. International team captain Mike Weir notably sat out Tom Kim , one of three golfers on his side ranked among the top 25 in the world golf rankings , after Kim lost to his friend, Scottie Scheffler, on Thursday.

But after the Americans staked themselves a 5-0 lead after Round 1, the International team tied everything up again ahead of what should be a dramatic weekend of golf.

Here are the results through two days of competition in the 2024 Presidents Cup, plus matchups, pairings, tee times for Saturday:

Pivotal moments: how the internationals fought back with presidents cup sweep of their own.

  • Brentley Romine ,
  • Brentley Romine

Well, we have ourselves a Presidents Cup.

With a 5-0 American four-ball sweep still fresh in their minds, the Internationals turned in a shutout of their own on Friday, dominating the foursomes session, 5-0, and storming back to tie the competition through two days at Royal Montreal.

While the U.S. eked out most of its wins on Thursday (three 1-up victories), the Internationals posted several routs, including a record-tying 7-and-6 win by Hideki Matsuyama and Sungjae Im over American cup veterans Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay. The foursomes were so lopsided that the U.S. led for just one hole compared to 57 holes for the Internationals. The Internationals also won 27 holes to the Americans’ six.

“We listened to Mike and other assistants, and we took the positives of how close it was, and we didn’t get deflated,” Adam Scott said. “We came out and we knew we were playing well. … I said it in the meeting yesterday; there’s a lot of fight in this team, and we’re not going to go away.”

Furyk is now 2-11 as a captain in foursomes, with this marking the second foursomes session that his American teams have been swept (0-4 in opening foursome session at 2018 Ryder Cup).

“We got to watch them jump up and down on the 18 th green and celebrate, excited,” Furyk said. “I hope that sticks with everyone, and I hope that’s a pit in their stomach tonight. We’ll regroup, we’ll get some good pairs out there in the morning, and it’s our turn to come out firing.”

Here were the most pivotal moments in each match:

Hideki to the heart

Hideki Matsuyama/Sungjae Im (Int.) def. Patrick Cantlay/Xander Schauffele (U.S.), 7 and 6

The Internationals led the whole way in this one, though the Americans finally seemed to be settling in late on the front nine. Schauffele stuck his tee ball to 8 feet at the par-3 seventh, and Cantlay rolled in their first birdie of the match to tie the hole and remain 4 down.

But a hole later, Matsuyama shut the door with a 16-foot birdie make, which he celebrated with a huge fist pump.

Im added an important par save at the ninth hole, where Cantlay hit his approach to tap-in range, and the Internationals turned with a 5-up lead. Matsuyama and Im carded seven straight birdies to close out the 7-and-6 blowout, which tied the largest margin of victory in event history. Schauffele and Cantlay have now lost three straight matches as partners, their record as a duo dropping to 6-6.

“Today from the beginning, our vibe was vibing,” Im said.

Scott from downtown

Adam Scott/Taylor Pendrith (Int.) def. Sahith Theegala/Collin Morikawa (U.S.), 5 and 4

After a flurry of pars to start, Scott notched the first birdie of the match with a 9-foot make at the par-4 fourth. But it was at the next hole, the par-3 fifth, that the Internationals grabbed hold of this match.

While Morikawa splashed out of the sand to 4 feet, Scott erased any hope of a tie by draining a 40-foot birdie bomb to push the International lead to 2 up.

Morikawa stubbed a chip from a juicy lie at the par-5 sixth, and the Internationals won that hole, too, never looking back. Scott’s International-record 22nd point was officially obtained at the par-4 14th hole after Theegala flubbed a 50-yard pitch shot well short of the green and Morikawa caught a chip, which he had to make, a little heavy.

“Lots of great moments and tough moments, too,” Scott said. “I’m going to enjoy this one because this is Taylor’s first win. I’m stoked for him, and he’s going to have many more.”

Christiaan Bezuidenhout/Jason Day (Int.) def. Max Homa/Brian Harman (U.S.), 1 up

It was a rough Thursday for Bezuidenhout, who missed three crucial putts inside of 7 feet on his last five holes, but he got a confidence boost early by sinking a 12-foot birdie putt to win the first hole.

From there, Day took over.

He hooped a 28-footer at the par-3 seventh to give he and Bez the lead again – and for good. The biggest moment, though, came at the par-4 finishing hole, where Bez flew the green with his approach and Day picked him up with a nifty chip to gimme range.

Canadian reversal

Corey Conners/Mackenzie Hughes (Int.) def. Wyndham Clark/Tony Finau (U.S.), 6 and 5

Conners and Hughes, two Canadians, jumped on the Americans from the start, as Finau and Clark didn’t even finish at each of the first two holes and fell 2 down early. But the dagger came on the par-4 eighth hole.

Clark pounded a drive and left Finau just 87 yards to the hole, while Hughes put Conners in the righ fairway bunker, 128 yards away and with a poor angle. Conners, though, didn’t care, hitting a beauty to inside 3 feet. Finau only managed 8 feet, which Clark couldn’t convert from.

The Internationals won that hole and the next to go 5 up at the turn, and it was essentially over at that point, as the Canadian duo poured in seven birdies on their opponents.

Shakin’ dat...

Si Woo Kim/Byeong Hun An (Int.) def. Scottie Scheffler/Russell Henley (U.S.), 1 up

This was the only match in which the Americans led, 1 up after two holes. But that was short-lived. The Internationals went 1 up after Kim flagged his tee shot at the par-4 13th hole, and Kim tied the 15th hole by converting a 12-footer for birdie.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler was arrested by Louisville Metro Police on Friday morning after trying to drive into the entrance of Valhalla Golf Club, the site of this week's PGA Championship.

Traffic outside the golf course had been stopped after a man was struck and killed by a shuttle bus around 5 a.m. ET.

Scheffler faces charges of second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic. The assault charge is a felony; the others are misdemeanors.

Maj. Jason Logsdon of the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections told ESPN that Scheffler was released at 8:40 a.m. ET Friday without bail. He arrived at Valhalla less than an hour before he was scheduled to tee off at 10:08 a.m. ET.

"This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers," Scheffler said in a statement. "It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do. I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I'm hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today.

"Of course, all of us involved in the tournament express our deepest sympathies to the family of the man who passed away in the earlier accident this morning. It truly puts everything in perspective."

According to ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington, who witnessed the incident, Scheffler was trying to drive around the crash scene on a median. A police officer instructed Scheffler to stop, but Scheffler continued to drive about 10 to 20 yards toward the entrance.

At one point, an officer attached himself to the side of Scheffler's car. Scheffler stopped his car as he turned into the entrance of Valhalla Golf Club.

After about 20 to 30 seconds, Scheffler rolled down his window to talk to the officer. The officer grabbed Scheffler's arm to pull him out of the vehicle, according to Darlington. The officer reached inside the vehicle to open the door, and once Scheffler was pulled out, he was pushed against the car and placed in handcuffs.

Darlington was standing at the entrance when Scheffler was detained. Darlington said Scheffler turned to him and asked, "Can you help?"

According to Darlington, an officer instructed him to back away.

"You need to get out of the way," the officer told Darlington. "Right now, he's going to jail, and there's nothing you can do about it."

The officer -- Det. Bryan Gillis, identified as Det. Gillis in the arrest report -- was dragged "to the ground" and suffered "pain, swelling, and abrasions to his left wrist" after the car "accelerated forward," according to the police report.

The officer was dressed in a high visibility reflective jacket when he stopped Scheffler's car to give instructions, the arrest sheet said. Gillis was taken to the hospital for his injuries.

Scheffler's attorney, Steven Romines, told ESPN that the golfer attempted to enter Valhalla Golf Club as he had been instructed to earlier, unaware there had been a fatal wreck just up the road.

"He was going into Valhalla to work out," Romines said. "He was getting ready for his tee time. They were directing traffic. He held his credential out and was going in like they'd been instructed to. Apparently, there had been a traffic accident, maybe even a fatality, down the road, and that had changed the traffic patterns, and he was unaware of that."

Romines, speaking outside the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections, said the officer who attempted to stop Scheffler wasn't part of the regular event-traffic detail at Valhalla Golf Club, "so that's where the miscommunication arose."

"They are allowed to go through, that's why they have the credential and the wave-through," Romines said. "[Scheffler] was unaware there had been a wreck, and he proceeded like they'd been instructed to. He did exactly as he was instructed to enter the premises."

Romines said Scheffler would cooperate fully with police and "we'll deal with it as it progresses."

Scheffler, 27, has won four of his past five starts, including his second major championship at the Masters in April.

The start of the second round was delayed after a shuttle bus struck and killed a pedestrian outside Valhalla Golf Club, a spokesperson for the Louisville Metro Police Department confirmed to ESPN.

The unidentified man was attempting to cross Shelbyville Road when he was struck in a dedicated lane for buses. Police said the man died at the scene.

"This morning we were devastated to learn that a worker with one of our vendors was tragically struck and killed by a shuttle bus outside Valhalla Golf Club," the PGA of America said in a statement. "This is heartbreaking to all of us involved with the PGA Championship. We extend our sincere condolences to their family and loved ones."

Several police and first responders were still at the scene at 6:45 a.m. ET. Traffic had backed up on the roadway in dark and wet conditions, and shuttle buses bringing fans to the golf course had been stopped.

The second round had been scheduled to start at 7:15 a.m. ET.

Will this upcoming event generate more interest than the Presidents Cup?

As the Presidents Cup gets underway at Royal Montreal Golf Club, two long-time golf broadcasters wonder if the biennial event will generate as much interest as another, smaller showdown that’s scheduled a few months from now.

“Everybody’s looking right now to December to see the match between LIV and the [PGA Tour], with the four best players,” said Gary McCord on the latest episode of “ Kostis & McCord: Off Their Rockers ,” a GOLF production. “I think that’s taking precedent over everything at this point.”

McCord was referring to the previously announced Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler vs. Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka match , which will take place on a December date to be announced in Las Vegas. While McCord’s assertion that the upcoming match consists of the game’s four best players is obviously his opinion, it’s certainly not far off, especially when it comes to star power and name recognition. But it’s also the first time these made-for-TV matches will have a PGA Tour vs. LIV angle.

Sungjae Im of the the International Team and Tom Kim of the International Team react to the crowd on the first tee during Four-Ball on day one of the 2024 Presidents Cup at The Royal Montreal Golf Club on September 26, 2024 in Montreal, Quebec. (

‘That’s disrespectful’: Etiquette breach spices up Presidents Cup match

“I realize it’s not apples and oranges because one is an 18-hole match and the other is over [four] days, but I’m going to be really interested to see what the TV ratings are between those two,” Peter Kostis said. “We’ll see how much interest there is.”

McCord said he thinks part of the reason December’s match was scheduled was due to players’ frustration over golf’s divide, and the fact that a deal is still not in place to bring the sport together.

“I think basically the four best players in the world are getting tired of this crap going on,” McCord said. “We don’t know what happened a couple of weeks ago when everybody met in New York to see if they could hammer out something. No one has heard anything, as always. So I think these four guys are like, alright, the hell with that, we are going to do this match and see how it goes. And we’re also going to go and have TNT do it, who is not really one of the title sponsors on the PGA Tour. And if I was a sponsor on the PGA Tour and I saw my TV ratings go down and now I saw the four best players in the world getting ready to do a made-for-television event with TNT doing it — and if these numbers did anywhere near the last-day numbers of any of the four majors — there is going to be some hooting and hollering about what are you guys doing at PGA Tour headquarters at Ponte Vedra.”

At the Irish Open a few weeks ago, McIlroy said the match wasn’t meant to send a message.

“You’ve got the best player in the world. You’ve got two guys in Bryson and Brooks that have won majors in the last two years. You’ve got me in there who, I haven’t done what those guys have done the last couple years, but I’ve definitely been I feel one of the best players in the world,” McIlroy said. “It’s a way to show golf fans in the world that this is what could happen or these are the possibilities going forward. I’ve been saying this for a long time: I think golf and golf fans get to see us together more than four times a year.”

McCord put a bow on his thoughts, saying, “I think these four guys are just pressing a pedal right now to get something done.”

7:02 a.m.: Scottie Scheffler/Collin Morikawa (U.S.) vs. Adam Scott/Taylor Pendrith (International)

While Jim Furyk has previously said that he wouldn’t pair Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele, the top two players in the world, this U.S. pairing may be the next best thing. It puts Scheffler, the FedExCup champ and world No. 1, alongside Morikawa, who finished second in the FedExCup and is ranked fourth in the world. Putting out one of his strongest pairings seems like a good way for Furyk to try to turn the tide after Friday’s sweep by the Internationals. They’ll face Adam Scott and Taylor Pendrith, who paired for a 5-and-4 Foursomes victory on Friday. That win made Scott the Internationals’ all-time points scorer.

Golfbet outlook: Both teams are leading with strength at dawn. Scheffler's pedigree alone will ensure that the Americans tee off as betting favorites in this one, as he could go out and shoot a 65 on his own ball without batting an eye. Add in Morikawa and two of the best ball-strikers in the world will be tough to beat. Scott and Pendrith have proved a successful (if unexpected) duo, but they'll be facing an uphill battle against a powerful American duo hungry to regain some momentum.

7:20 a.m.: Tony Finau/Xander Schauffele (U.S.) vs. Corey Conners/Mackenzie Hughes (International)

Unlike the first two days, International Captain Mike Weir has stacked the top of his Saturday lineup with Canadians. It’s a great way to capitalize on the increased fervor that the home fans displayed Friday, and to give them something to cheer for in the chilly temperatures that will greet players and fans when play begins at 7 a.m. Saturday. Weir also is keeping intact a pairing that had success in Friday Foursomes. Conners and Hughes won, 5 and 4, on Friday. While Weir is loading his lineup with Canadians, Furyk is leading off with his best players. He has three of the top four players in the world in the first two matches. Finau and Schauffele won their Thursday Four-ball match, 1-up.

Golfbet outlook: Weir really paused with this pairing, so it seems like he wanted to pair Conners and Hughes but had questions about where to slot them. This match will be pivotal for International hopes of continuing the fan fervor on site, and Conners was statistically the best player on Friday. Expect the Canadians to be a popular bet. But the big question mark in this Foursomes might be Finau, who struggled at times on each of the first two days. If he's able to help out Schauffele on a couple holes, the Americans may be able to stem the tide.

7:38 a.m.: Keegan Bradley/Wyndham Clark (U.S.) vs. Si Woo Kim/Tom Kim (International)

The last time the Kims were paired, it produced one of the most memorable moments of the last Presidents Cup. Kim sank a 10-foot birdie putt on 18 to beat the powerful American duo of Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay, authoring a boisterous celebration before the putt even dropped. Tom Kim is back in the lineup after sitting out Friday. He was still invaluable to the Internationals’ efforts, though, serving as the team’s spark plug. Bradley also sat out Friday, but now he is reunited with Clark. They paired for a 1-up Four-ball win on Thursday.

Golfbet outlook: Tom Kim might levitate his way to the first tee, given how fired up he got Friday without hitting a shot. This feels like the match where it's easiest to chart a path to an International point, and the oddsmakers will keep this one close as a result. The focus here will be on the International duo looking to rekindle their heroics from Quail Hollow, but the match may be decided by whether or not Clark can exceed expectations like he did on Thursday in this format.

7:56 a.m.: Sam Burns/Patrick Cantlay (U.S.) vs. Hideki Matsuyama/Sungjae Im (International)

Matsuyama and Im are coming off a record-tying performance on the second day. Their 7-and-6 win over Cantlay and Schauffele tied the biggest win in Presidents Cup history. They’re the third team that Weir is repeating from Friday’s sweep in the second session. Burns and Cantlay paired for a 2-and-1 Four-ball win on Thursday. Burns and Cantlay are one of three teams that Furyk is bringing back from Thursday’s Four-ball session.

Golfbet outlook: How do you follow up a perfect game? That's basically what the Matsuyama/Im pair is tasked with after Friday's rout in Foursomes. Look for Cantlay and Burns to have a slight edge in the eyes of oddsmakers, as Im has been volatile through these first two sessions. Which way he'll go in Four-ball will go a long way in deciding this match, as Cantlay and Burns will surely rack up their fair share of birdies.
