50 years of music: Funk Fest brings ultimate old school hip-hop experience to Louisville

funk fest tour.com

Fifty years of hip-hop were celebrated Friday as the 2023 Funk Fest returned for a fifth year to downtown Louisville.

The first act of the night, Big Daddy Kane , had just taken the stage as music festival veterans, Bennie and Wilma Anthony of Cincinnati, Ohio finished setting up their lawn chairs and accessories for the evening of music.

"We love outdoor concerts," said Wilma Anthony. "We go to them all over the country and our friends keep telling us we have to come to Funk Fest so here we are."

As he rolled out a straw mat under their lawn chairs, Bennie Anthony, who said the couple had just been to an outdoor Jazz festival in Panama City, Florida, explained that a mat keeps the bugs off their legs and is more comfortable when they remove their shoes.

Yep, this couple, who has attended dozens of festivals, know the tricks of making an outdoor music festival comfortable. Umbrellas, sunscreen, sunglasses and plenty of cash or credit cards are also good ideas to bring the Funk Fest.

The Anthonys were just two of the several thousand music fans gathered at Waterfront Park's Great Lawn , 129 River Road, for the first night of the two-day music festival featuring Juvenile , Big Daddy Kane , 8Ball & MJG , Slick Rick , Doug E. Fresh and culminating with headliner Jeezy .

As part of June's Black Music Month and the weekend of Juneteenth celebrations, Funk Fest is billed as a music festival with the feel of a family reunion.

"I come from Indianapolis every year for Funk Fest," said Lonie Whitfield. "I just love the music, it's a tradition. My wife and I come every year and just hang out and have fun."

Funk Fest began back in 1994 as a small festival in Mobile, Alabama but has grown into a series of annual multi-city concerts. Leo Bennett, CEO and founder of Variety Entertainment, has produced the Funk Fest Tour concert series in cities across the nation, including, Charlotte, North Carolina, Miami, Florida, Atlanta, Georgia, and Louisville.

The festival was created to celebrate the rich, cultural heritage of "old school music" and over the years, it has grown into a celebration of human expression. Many of these concerts feature classic R&B, funk, throwback hip-hop, blues and even some disco.

Gene Washington and Galen Gordon, also from Cincinnati, Ohio, lit up a couple of cigars and joined their friends, the Anthonys, for the first night of the festival.

"We've always heard Funk Fest is a great time and we're ready for it," Gordon told the Courier Journal. "This weather is great, the lineup of music is great and we're with great friends."

Day two of the 2023 Funk Fest starts at 5 p.m. with a focus on R&B. Saturday's lineup includes Sunshine Anderson, Fantasia, Case, Ginuwine, Cameo and Jagged Edge. Tickets start at $40 and are available at funkfesttour.com .

Jazz Fest in Syracuse

A Syracuse music tradition is celebrating its 38th year with big names in jazz, R&B, swing, rock and more.

The 2024 National Grid Syracuse International Jazz Fest will take place June 26-30, at multiple venues in Syracuse, N.Y. Headliners include Kenny G on Friday, June 28; The O’Jays on Saturday, June 29; and The Mavericks on Thursday, June 27; all three concerts will take place on the main Amazon Outdoor Stage in Clinton Square.

All Syracuse Jazz Festival performances are free to attend.

The fun kicks off Wednesday, June 26, with local and regional artists performing in 20 different venues throughout Syracuse. Highlights include tributes to Sarah Vaughan and Donny Hathaway; Wayne Tucker & The Bad Motha’s; The Latin Groove Connection; the Joe Magnarelli Organ Band; Marissa Mulder & Jon Weber; and Syracuse Area Music Awards (SAMMYS) winners like Shawn Maurice Seals & SMX, E S P, and Jimmy John’s Vibe.

Other artists on the five-day schedule include McKinley James and the Catherine Russell Band on Thursday, June 27; the Gunhild Carling Big Band (“Sweden’s Queen of Swing”) and a celebration of Ella Fitzgerald by the Freda Payne Big Band on Friday, June 28; Gino Vanelli and saxophone great James Carter paying tribute to the late Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis on Saturday, June 29; and “Return to Community: A Sunday Gospel Jazz Service” featuring The Bowie State University Gospel Choir, The Black Celestial Choral Ensemble (BCCE) of Syracuse University, and a community choir at Syracuse University’s Hendricks Chapel on Sunday, June 30.

“It all starts with the music, that’s the reason we’re here,” Malfitano said when the lineup was announced in March.

Here’s everything you need to know about the 2024 Syracuse Jazz Fest (see full schedule at bottom):

Kenny G, who previously played Jazz Fest in 2012 and 2013, is a smooth jazz saxophonist and one of the best-selling artists of all time. He’s released more than a dozen albums and won a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition with 1994â€Čs “Forever in Love.”

The O’Jays are an R&B, soul and funk group known for songs like “Love Train,” “For the Love of Money,” and “I Love Music.” The band, currently on a farewell tour with original members Eddie Levert and Walter Lee Williams, has been inducted in the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Rhythm & Blues Music Hall of Fame.

The Mavericks are a Grammy-winning band known for their mix of country, rock, Latin, Americana and pop music on songs like “All You Ever Do is Bring Me Down,” “What a Crying Shame” and “Dance the Night Away.” The Raul Malo-led group previously performed at Syracuse Jazz Fest in 2017 .

All performances will be free of charge, including the club and main stage shows. No tickets are required.

PARKING / DIRECTIONS

Clinton Square is located at 161 W Genesee St, Syracuse, N.Y. ( Click here for Google Maps directions .)

Parking is available on city streets surrounding Clinton Square and in various lots and parking garages. Rates may vary.

There are multiple Centro bus stops along N. Salina St., E. Washington St. and Franklin St.; the festival site is located half a mile north of the Centro Transit Hub on Salina Street. Taxis and ride-share services can also drop off passengers near Clinton Square.

FOOD / DRINK

There will be food and drink vendors at Clinton Square on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, while the club shows will be at local bars and restaurants.

There will be minimal seating provided at Jazz Fest, so attendees are invited and encouraged to bring their own chairs. Seating areas include the Clinton Square fountain/skating rink and grass around the Soldiers & Sailors Monument.

More than 20,000 people saw Herbie Hancock and Gladys Knight perform at Syracuse Jazz Fest in 2023, according to Jazz Fest founder and executive producer Frank Malfitano. 2022â€Čs event featured 16,500 attendees after a four-year hiatus.

Some past Jazz Fests drew even bigger crowds, including 40,000 for Aretha Franklin in 2007 at Onondaga Community College and 35,000 for Ray Charles, Dave Brubeck and Diana Krall in 2000 at Clinton Square. Giant video screens and sound towers help ensure everyone can see and hear the performers, but Kenny G, The Mavericks and The O’Jays could be big draws if the weather cooperates.

NEW YORK (AP) — Since the beginning of time or, at least, pop music, only a few have earned the designation of “song of the summer.”

These are the earworms that lodge deep into the brain, pushing past genre preferences and reminding listeners: A hit is a hit. With so much variety, though, it’s getting harder to crown a single song of the summer. So The Associated Press is offering 2024 predictions across categories — with past winners for reference.

Find your song of the summer and then listen to our Spotify playlist, here .

Song of the summer for the caffeinated: “Espresso,” Sabrina Carpenter

We’re a few decades removed from the Y2K era of off-kilter pop songs with nonsensical lyrics atop sunny productions. But no one told Sabrina Carpenter , whose hit “Espresso” is a shot of wake-up juice, equal parts clever and totally unserious. “Espresso” makes a one-woman argument for disco-informed radio pop’s endurance.

Past champion: “Wide Awake,” Katy Perry (2012)

Sabrina Carpenter performs during the Governors Ball Music Festival on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at Flushing Meadows Corona Park in the Queens borough of New York. (Photo by Andy Kropa/Invision/AP)

Country crossover song of the summer: “I Had Some Help,” Post Malone feat. Morgan Wallen

Before it even released, it seemed likely a Post Malone team-up with Morgan Wallen would result in a No. 1 record. “I Had Some Help” introduced Post Malone’s foray into country and, with some help indeed from the biggest name in contemporary country music, was an instant success. There’s no denying that honkytonk hook, Malone’s autotuned vibrato or the singalong chorus.

Past champion: “You’re Still the One,” Shania Twain (1998)

FILE - Post Malone performs a medley during the 59th annual Academy of Country Music Awards on Thursday, May 16, 2024, at the Ford Center in Frisco, Texas. Post Malone and Doja Cat, two of pop music’s biggest stars, will headline this year’s Global Citizen Festival in New York’s Central Park on Sept. 28, 2024, as organizers focus on mobilizing young people to help address the world’s pressing problems. Diss song of the summer: “Not Like Us,” Kendrick Lamar

Drake and Kendrick Lamar reignited a once-dormant feud earlier this year, launching diss track after diss track. None hit quite like Lamar’s ferocious “Not Like Us,” which became Lamar’s fourth No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100. The messaging — all West Coast fire in an “us vs. them” anthem — really works.

Past champion: “Obsessed,” Mariah Carey (2009)

Viral hit of the summer: “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” Shaboozey

In an ideal world, every country station would play Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” once an hour, on the hour. Until then, its social media virality will have to do the trick. With its inspired interpolation of J-Kwon’s “Tipsy,” the song has all the makings of a modern classic, with an easy-to-rally-around narrative following a hardworking protagonist easing his troubles on a bar stool.

Past champion: “Trap Queen,” Fetty Wap (2015)

US singer Billie Eilish is sitting on a ledge of a staircase railing known as the "Billie Eilish wall", in Berlin Friday, June 7, 2024. The artist wants to draw attention to her new album "hit me hard and soft" during a promotional campaign. (Britta Pedersen/dpa via AP)

Song of the summer for the yearners: “Lunch,” Billie Eilish

“Lunch,” from Billie Eilish’s new album, “Hit Me Hard and Soft,” is a PG-13 ode to same-sex infatuation. The once-in-a-generation performer has come a long way from the macabre humor, off-kilter beats and Invisalign slurps that made her a star. Instead, “Lunch” is a delicious, sapphic anthem.

Past champion: “Nineteen,” Tegan and Sara (2007)

Club song of the summer: “Get It Sexyy,” Sexyy Red

It’s in the title. Sexyy Red, with her distinctive flow and quotable bars not exactly safe for work, has taken over. “Get It Sexyy” is a theme song for her dominance and a confident mantra for everyone planning to hit the dance floor.

Past champion: “Lose Control,” Missy Elliott feat. Ciara & Fat Man Scoop (2005)

Sexyy Red performs during the Governors Ball Music Festival on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at Flushing Meadows Corona Park in the Queens borough of New York. (Photo by Andy Kropa/Invision/AP)

Song for singles ready to mingle this summer: “Bellakeo,” Peso Pluma feat. Anitta

Take one of the biggest names in regional Mexican music, Peso Pluma , bring in one of the biggest Brazilian pop-funk stars, Anitta , and you’ve got yourself a sweaty reggaetón banger. “Bellakeo” is a song for both the club and corner store, oozing with flirtation.

Past champion: “Where the Party At,” Jagged Edge and Nelly (2001)

Song of the summer from your favorite artist’s favorite artist: “Good Luck, Babe!” , Chappell Roan

Chappell Roan has long had a knack for candor in her theatrical, cheeky songwriting, emphasized by sometimes-yodeling vocals. But she’s only recently started receiving mainstream attention for her full-throated, big-hearted queer love anthems. “Good Luck, Babe!” is a kiss-off-and-a-half — perfect for screaming along to while driving down an empty street in Roan’s native Midwest or getting ready with the girls for the drag club.

Past champion: “Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours,” Stevie Wonder (1970)

Chappell Roan performs during the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival on Sunday, June 16, 2024, in Manchester, Tenn. (Photo by Amy Harris/Invision/AP)

Song of the summer for people seriously considering buying a harmonica: “Pink Skies,” Zach Bryan

Every song of the summer list requires a real tearjerker. Within the first few seconds of Zach Bryan’s “Pink Skies,” the acoustic guitar, harmonica, and raspy narrative will have you breaking out the tissues. “The kids are in town for a funeral,” he sings. “So pack the car and dry your eyes.” He’s an expert at writing a novel in few words, a song so good it charts without traditional support.

Past champion: “Run-Around,” Blues Traveler (1995)

Song of the summer that shares a title with a film: “Million Dollar Baby,” Tommy Richman

“Million Dollar Baby” feels like it came out of nowhere — as so many TikTok smashes do — but its continued endurance since April is notable. Plus, it shares a title with a very famous film, and that’s always fun.

Past champion: “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” Deep Blue Something (1995)

Song of the summer that inexplicably came out in January: “Beautiful Things,” Benson Boone

If Zach Bryan’s “Pink Skies” is a little too raw for you, Benson Boone’s “Beautiful Things” offers a glossy alternative. There isn’t a hint of edge in his soft pop-rock, but there is a lot of love.

Past champion: “Boy’s a Liar PT. 2,” PinkPantheress , Ice Spice (2023)

Singer Taylor Swift performs on stage during her Eras Tour at the Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh, Friday June 7, 2024. (Jane Barlow/PA via AP)

Swifties’ song of the summer: “Fortnight,” Taylor Swift and Post Malone

Every summer, Taylor Swift’s fans anoint their own pick. This time around, it has to be “Fortnight” from “The Tortured Poets Department.” Enter “I love you / It’s ruining my life,” into the pantheon of Swiftisms that would make for an amazing AOL away message (R.I.P.).

Past champion: “Karma,” Taylor Swift (2023)

Song of the summer revolutionizing genre: “Texas Hold ’Em,” BeyoncĂ©

BeyoncĂ© released “Act ll: Cowboy Carter” with the declaration : “This ain’t a Country album. This is a ‘Beyoncé’ album.” But she certainly wove the genre in, reclaiming country music as a Black woman. The first taste came in the form of “Texas Hold ’Em” — ideal listening, whether you’re headed to the beach or rodeo.

Past champion: “What’s Love Got to Do With It,” Tina Turner (1984)

The post-ironic, TikTok-heavy, too online, micro-hit song of the summer: “The Spark,” Kabin Crew & Lisdoonvarna Crew

There’s always one song that’s part joke, full hit. Enter “The Spark,” an Irish collaboration between some remarkably talented kids from Cork and Lisdoonvarna, written for CruinniĂș na nÓg, a day meant to celebrate children’s creativity. These kids have produced an empowering electro-club banger for all ages.

Past champion: “The Margarita Song,” That Chick Angel, Casa Di & Steve Terrell (2023)

Song of the summer for Swedish pop lovers: “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait For Your Love),” Ariana Grande

Of all the songs on Ariana Grande’s “eternal sunshine,” “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait For Your Love)” is the Europop exemplar. It explodes into a string crescendo, electronic sounds effortlessly blending into organic ones, lyrically highlighting a relationship on the outs. It’s a gorgeous and devastating listen in the tradition of another queen of summertime sadness bangers, Robyn .

Past champion: “Call Your Girlfriend,” Robyn (2010)

Song of the summer for it girls: “360,” Charli XCX

Charli XCX’s latest album, “Brat,” oscillates between hedonism and anxiety. “360” is a hot girl club classic squarely in the first category — all sexy showboating and futuristic production.

Past champion: “Stars Are Blind,” Paris Hilton (2006)

Dr. Dre, Tyler the Creator, YG and More ‘Pop Out' At Kendrick Lamar's Juneteenth Concert

Kendrick Lamar's hometown Juneteenth show at Los Angeles' Kia Forum was a star-studded ode to West Coast rap that culminated with dozen of artists and entertainers joining Lamar for an unprecedented moment of unity on stage. The concert had been announced less than two weeks before, on the back of Lamar's victorious nine-song-long rap battle with Drake.

The Pop Out: Ken & Friends was curated into three sections, the first collection of West Coast artists under DJ Hed, the second under storied " Not Like Us " producer Mustard, and the third headlined by Lamar. Before Kendrick even took the stage, DJ Hed had many rising and established Los Angeles stars perform, like new Top Dawg Entertainment signee Ray Vaughn, all-girl rap group Cuzzos, male group Blue Bucks Clan and Westside Boogie. The legendary krump dancer Tommy the Clown and a large crew also broke it down and battled on stage.

Mustard played a string of his own hits from over the years, including Tyga's "Rack City," and 2 Chainz's "I'm Different," before Dom Kennedy, Ty Dolla $ign, Steve Lacy, Tyler the Creator, Roddy Ricch and YG joined him on stage to separately perform some of their biggest hits. Tyler's "Earthquake," Lacy's "Bad Habit," and YG's "Toot It and Boot It," and Roddy Ricch's "The Box" especially made waves. There was a section dedicated to Nipsey Hussle in which Mustard played their collaboration "Perfect 10" as well.

After Kendrick hit the stage to perform "Euphoria," "DNA," and "Alright," he was joined by his former TDE label mates and Black Hippie comrades Jay Rock, Ab-Soul and ScHoolboy Q. Jay Rock and Kendrick performed their Good Kid, M.A.A.D City collaboration "Money Trees," as well as Jay Rock's "Win" and "King's Dead." Ab-Soul and Kendrick performed his verse on Kendrick's Drake diss "6:16 in LA," and all four remained on stage for ScHoolboy Q's "Collard Greens" and "THat Part."

Promising to put on for the legacy of Los Angeles, Dr. Dre emerged to perform "Still D.R.E." with Kendrick filling in at Snoop Dogg's parts and introduced Lamar's performances of the explosive Drake diss "Not Like Us" – of which there were five.

At the show's end, Lamar made sure emphasize the concert's purpose was not just a victory lap, but unification effort. "We done lost a lot of homies to this music shit, a lot of homies to this street shit," he said, noting that the show featured artists from several different gang factions. He promised this was the first of more cross-city collaborations.
