IRON MAIDEN's 'The Future Past Tour' To Continue Into 2024

The fall 2022 North American leg of IRON MAIDEN 's "Legacy Of The Beast" tour ended last night (Thursday, October 27) at the Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida with yet another sold-out U.S. show in front of over 12,000 fans.

MAIDEN manager Rod Smallwood of Phantom Music Management says: "On behalf of the band, myself and all at Phantom , we'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone who made this 'Legacy' tour such a special and memorable experience. First and most importantly you, the fans, especially those affected by problems caused by the global pandemic which led to the 2020 European stadium shows having to be rescheduled not just once but twice! Your patience and good-will in holding on to your tickets and waiting until we could finally bring the 'Legacy' show to you was very much appreciated. You truly are the best and playing to over 3 million of you over the extended tour was a hell of an achievement so thanks to each and every one of you for making this both possible and also making it incredible fun for the band who enjoyed pretty much every minute on stage.

"We'd also like to thank our brilliant touring Killer Krew — both the longstanding and newer members to the MAIDEN family, who never cease to rise to any challenges thrown their way — and there were a few — no mean feat considering this tour covered 33 countries and 139 shows played since we started in Tallinn way back on May 26 2018.

"Thanks also to all our Special Guests and support acts who played on the tour since 2018: AIRBOURNE , AVATAR , FOZZY , GOJIRA , KILLSWITCH ENGAGE , LORD OF THE LOST , MASTODON , POWERWOLF , RAGE IN MY EYES , RHAPSODY OF FIRE , SABATON , SERPENTOR , SHINEDOWN , TEMPT , THE HELLACOPTERS , THE RAVEN AGE , TREMONTI , TRIVIUM and WITHIN TEMPTATION . Thanks also to our suppliers, our agents, promoters, merchandisers and everyone else involved in bringing this show to you night after night, city after city.

"And finally, both personally and, I am sure, on behalf of all of you — massive thanks to Bruce , Steve , Dave , Adrian , Janick and Nicko who never let up, played, and sang! magnificently and matched every crowd for passion and enthusiasm every single night, wherever they were. Guys — I don't know how you do it but we are all bloody glad you do!!

"We are all now going to take a well-earned break and we'll be back again next year with a great new show, 'The Future Past Tour' playing just Europe this time as the 2022 'Legacy' tour was such a long run to enable us to see as many of you fans as possible post-pandemic. However, 'The Future Past Tour' will continue into 2024 and who knows where it will go… ..so stay tuned!!"

IRON MAIDEN 's "The Future Past Tour" will feature previously unperformed songs from the band's most recent studio album, "Senjutsu" , along with a focus on 1986's iconic "Somewhere In Time" record, plus other classic cuts.

"Senjutsu" came out in September 2021. It marked MAIDEN 's second consecutive double album behind 2015's "The Book Of Souls" which is the longest MAIDEN album, with a running time of 92 minutes.

IRON MAIDEN 's first album in six years, "Senjutsu" was recorded in 2019 in Paris with longstanding producer Kevin Shirley and co-produced by bassist Steve Harris . It features three tracks whose running time exceeds 10 minutes each.

For "Senjutsu" — loosely translated as "tactics and strategy" — the band once again enlisted the services of Mark Wilkinson to create the spectacular Samurai-themed cover artwork, based on an idea by Harris .

"Senjutsu" bowed at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 chart, charting higher than even the band's early classics like "Powerslave" and "The Number Of The Beast" . Nearly 90 percent of the LP's 64,000 equivalent album units earned came from pure album sales. The critically acclaimed double album debuted one place higher than 2015's "The Book Of Souls" and 2010's "The Final Frontier" , which both peaked at No. 4.

"Senjutsu" was MAIDEN 's 13th album to top in the Top 40 in the U.S.

After kicking off 2023 with a New Year’s Eve performance in Times Square, Duran Duran will keep the live vibes going this spring when they embark on a North American tour in support of their latest LP Future Past .

Following a headlining gig at Napa Valley, California’s Bottlerock Festival, the trek kicks off May 28 in San Jose, California and slowly winds its way across the U.S. before concluding Sept. 22 in Queens, New York. Like the 2022 leg , Nile Rodgers and Chic serve as special guest throughout the tour, as well as Bastille, while Grace Jones will also be on hand for the Forest Hills show.

“It’s remarkable to me that as a band, we are still hitting new milestones, and introducing the sound of DD to new generations of music lovers,” frontman Simon Le Bon said in a statement. “We are truly grateful that we get to do what we do on a daily basis, and that we still love our job as much as we did when we started out some four decades ago.”

The Future Past Tour marks Duran Duran’s first trek since they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Iron Maiden’s ‘Future Past’ Tour Will Extend Into 2024, Band’s Manager Says

Iron Maiden just wrapped their long-running " Legacy of the Beast World Tour " in Tampa, Florida, on Thursday (Oct. 27).

And the legendary heavy metal band is already looking toward their " The Future Past Tour " to kick off in Europe next year.

On Friday (Oct. 28), in a thank you note to fans delivered by Iron Maiden's manager, it is revealed that The Future Past Tour will extend beyond 2023 and into 2024 — although exactly where it will continue has not yet been revealed

Read the note down toward the bottom of this post.

Iron Maiden released their 16th studio album, Senjutsu , last year. Get Iron Maiden concert tickets at this link.

From Iron Maiden band manager Ron Smallwood:

On behalf of the band, myself and all at Phantom, we’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who made this Legacy tour such a special and memorable experience. First and most importantly you, the fans, especially those affected by problems caused by the global pandemic which led to the 2020 European stadium shows having to be rescheduled not just once but twice! Your patience and good-will in holding on to your tickets and waiting until we could finally bring the Legacy show to you was very much appreciated. You truly are the best and playing to over 3 million of you over the extended tour was a hell of an achievement so thanks to each and every one of you for making this both possible and also making it incredible fun for the band who enjoyed pretty much every minute on stage. We’d also like to thank our brilliant touring Killer Krew - both the longstanding and newer members to the Maiden family, who never cease to rise to any challenges thrown their way - and there were a few - no mean feat considering this tour covered 33 countries and 139 shows played since we started in Tallinn way back on May 26 2018. Thanks also to all our Special Guests and support acts who played on the tour since 2018: Airbourne, Avatar, Fozzy, Gojira, Killswitch Engage, Lord of the Lost, Mastodon, Powerwolf, Rage In My Eyes, Rhapsody Of Fire, Sabaton, Serpentor, Shinedown, Tempt, The Hellacopters, The Raven Age, Tremonti, Trivium and Within Temptation. Thanks also to our suppliers, our agents, promoters, merchandisers and everyone else involved in bringing this show to you night after night, city after city. And finally, both personally and, I am sure, on behalf of all of you – massive thanks to Bruce, Steve, Dave, Adrian, Janick and Nicko who never let up, played, and sang! magnificently and matched every crowd for passion and enthusiasm every single night, wherever they were. Guys – I don’t know how you do it but we are all bloody glad you do!! We are all now going to take a well-earned break and we’ll be back again next year with a great new show, THE FUTURE PAST TOUR playing just Europe this time as the 2022 Legacy tour was such a long run to enable us to see as many of you fans as possible post-pandemic. However, THE FUTURE PAST TOUR will continue into 2024 and who knows where it will go… ..so stay tuned!!

Iron Maiden Announces First 2023 ‘The Future Past’ Tour Dates

Iron Maiden has announced the first dates of the Future Past Tour for 2023.

Beginning in June, the band will perform a series of concerts in Europe and the U.K., including a hometown gig in London on July 7. You can see a complete list of tour dates below.

Iron Maiden will play selections from their newest album, 2021's Senjutsu , during the shows but have also stated that there will be a "focus" on their 1986 album, Somewhere in Time , "plus other classic cuts." Up until now, Iron Maiden had been opening their Legacy of the Beast Tour concerts with the first three songs from  Senjutsu , but they've decided to change things for this next trek.

"As it doesn't make a lot of sense to repeat this for a Senjutsu album tour, we thought about other options and we've decided to revisit Somewhere in Time as that tour didn't feature in the various retrospective history tours we've played over the years," bassist  Steve Harris said in a statement.

"They were based on our '80s concert videos and sadly we did not film that tour. We have had lots of requests from fans over the years for many tracks on it so we are now going to play them, plus of course a few others we know you will like! It will also be particularly satisfying to finally get to play some of the more epic tracks on Senjutsu , it's been a long wait!"

"This combination of the two albums we feel is very exciting," the band's manager, Rod Smallwood, added. "We know fans want to hear those epic cuts on Senjutsu for the first time live, and we think that by combining it with an iconic album like Somewhere in Time it will make for another really special tour for fans old and new!" Tickets for the tour will go on sale on Oct. 13, with a fan club presale available beforehand.

Further European dates, as well as other tour details, will be announced at a later time.

Iron Maiden have played the first show of this year's The Future Past Tour . The band performed a 15-song set at the 12,000-capacity Arena Stožice in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The set for the tour is centred around two albums, and features previously unperformed songs from the 2021's Senjutsu  alongside a focus on 1986’s Somewhere In Time collection.

The set included live debuts for Days Of Future Past, The Time Machine, Death Of The Celts and Hell On Earth from Senjestsu , and one for Alexander The Great , from Somewhere in Time . The set opened with two songs the band haven't performed this century, Caught Somewhere in Time (last performed on the Somewhere On Tour tour in 1987), and Stranger in a Strange Land , a fixture on 1999's The Ed Hunter Tour setlist.

Iron Maiden's previous live show was the concluding show of the Legacy Of The Beast tour at the Amalie Arena, Tampa, FL, USA, and a number of classic Maiden songs performed that night have been dropped for the rejigged 2023 set, including Hallowed Be Thy Name, The Number Of The Beast, Run To The Hills, Flight Of Icarus and Aces High .

The Tour de France is here for 2024.

The iconic cycling event is a test of physical and mental endurance, with riders tackling long distances and challenging routes over three weeks.

Reigning Giro d'Italia champion and two-time Tour de France winner Tadej Pogacar is the clear favourite for 2024, and deservedly so.

However, last year's victor Jonas Vingegaard will look to defend his crown, recovering in time from a nasty crash in April, which saw him break his collarbone and ribs and suffer a collapsed lung.

MORE: When does the Tour de France start?

The Sporting News brings you the key details for this year's race.

How to watch the Tour de France: TV channel, live stream

USA:  NBC Sports holds the broadcast rights, with all stages available via streaming platforms Peacock and Fubo . Stages eight, 14 and 20 will be broadcast live on NBC.

UK:  The Tour de France will be live on Discovery+ and Eurosport. It will also be shown on free-to-air channel ITV 4 and streaming service ITV X. S4C will air the action in Wales.

  • Australia:  Once again, SBS has exclusive free-to-air and digital broadcast rights. Fans can watch the action on SBS' TV channel and stream via SBS On Demand.

Tour de France 2024 schedule, route, stages, start times

As has become tradition, the 'Grand Depart' will be held outside of France, with Stage 1 to begin in the Italian city of Florence.

Riders will make their way into France by Stage 4 where they will stay for the remainder of the Tour.

A few flat stages will follow, with the sprinters set to battle it out in frantic finishes.

The focus will turn to the general classification in the back half of the Tour, with three mountain stages on either side of the second rest day.

An individual time trial from Monaco to Nice will cap off this year's race.

Tour de France 2024 route, map

This year's Tour consists of eight flat stages, four hilly stages and seven mountain stages, broken up by a pair of time trials and rest days.

The  full route can be viewed here .

Two Massive Asteroids Will Fly Past Earth This Week. Here’s What to Know

Within 42 hours of each other, the pair of large asteroids, which both have no chance of impacting our planet, will approach Earth as they orbit the sun

illustration of the earth, a massive asteroid, and a smaller asteroid

This week, two massive asteroids will pass closely by Earth just days apart—one on Thursday afternoon and one on Saturday morning—in time to ring in World Asteroid Day , celebrated annually on June 30, with a particularly special showing.

Both space rocks have a zero percent chance of hitting our planet, and that should come as a relief: The asteroids are so large that an impact by the first would be civilization-ending, and the second could destroy a city. But their closeness and likelihood of being visible—for those with telescopes—will offer astronomers and citizen scientists an exciting opportunity to catch a glimpse as they fly by.

A gargantuan space rock

At approximately 4:14 p.m. Eastern time on Thursday afternoon, the bigger of the two asteroids—called (415029) 2011 UL21—will pass Earth at a distance more than 17 times farther than our moon, or more than four million miles away. Still, at 7,600 feet long, it is one of the largest space rocks to come that close within the past 125 years.

Discovered in October 2011, the asteroid is larger than 99 percent of near-Earth objects (NEOs), though roughly ten times smaller than the Vredefort asteroid—the largest to ever hit Earth—and about five times smaller than the rock that wiped out the dinosaurs. Its elliptical orbit around the sun is steeply tilted, which is unusual for asteroids of its size, and it completes 11 solar revolutions every 34 Earth years.

a graphic with details on the asteroid's approach: 6,634,850 km away, on june 27 at 20:14 UTC, discovered october 17, 2011

As the asteroid passes our planet, the Virtual Telescope Project will stream live programming , so you can witness the rock’s approach wherever you are. If you’d rather spot it yourself, (415029) 2011 UL21 will be visible with small telescopes through Sunday, appearing brightest on Friday, writes EarthSky ’s Eddie Irizarry.

A ‘city-killer’ asteroid

On Saturday morning, at 9:46 a.m. Eastern time, the smaller asteroid named 2024 MK will fly significantly closer to Earth, passing at about three-fourths the distance to the moon. Those with strong binoculars or a telescope might be able to identify the asteroid—which is between 400 and 850 feet long—as it rushes across the sky and appears as a small beacon of light. Those in Hawai’i or South America, astronomers say, will have the best view, though it will also be visible from the southern United States.

“The object will be moving fast, so you have to have some skills to spot it,” Juan Luis Cano , a member of the Planetary Defense Office at the European Space Agency, tells the New York Times ’ Robin George Andrews.

The asteroid is at least double the size of the space rock for which World Asteroid Day was founded—the rock responsible for the 1908 Tunguska event, in which a roughly 160-foot-long asteroid crashed into a remote region of Siberia, wiping out 800 square miles of forest and releasing energy equivalent to 185 Hiroshima bombs .

Each year, astronomers recognize World Asteroid Day on the anniversary of this event. The space-focused holiday is supported by the United Nations to raise public awareness about the hazard of asteroid strikes.

a graphic with details on 2024 MK's approach: 290,000 km away, on june 29 at 13:46 UTC, discovered june 16, 2024

What does this mean for planetary defense?

2024 MK was discovered on June 16—only about two weeks before its closest approach to Earth. This timeline “highlights the ongoing need to improve our ability to detect and monitor potentially hazardous near-Earth objects,” according to a statement from the European Space Agency.

The European Space Agency’s Planetary Defense Office continues to discover and track the passage of asteroids and other NEOs. But “the case of 2024 MK is yet another reminder about the fact that there are a lot of large objects still to be found,” Cano tells the New York Times .

Currently, no known asteroid is on a path to impact Earth within the next 1,000 years . But there will be some close calls, in the near and more distant future. In April 2029, a 1,100-foot-long asteroid named Apophis will fly within 20,000 miles of our planet. And again in 2089, 2011 UL21 will return along its orbit, coming about two and half times closer than its approach on Thursday.

Could former President Barack Obama replace Kamala Harris in 2024?

Q. If Kamala Harris were to step down, could President Biden pick former President Barack Obama to be Vice President?

A. President Joe Biden’s age has raised a few questions about presidential succession should he be elected to a second term. While my expectation is that President Biden will continue to run with Vice President Kamala Harris, even if he were to consider a change, some of the theories floating around the Internet are not realistic.

The idea that Barack Obama could return to the presidency is fantasy. Barack Obama has served two terms as president. Under the U.S. Constitution, he is ineligible to run for that office again. The 22nd Amendment reads in part, “No person shall be elected to the office of the president more than twice.” The theory being passed around is that by replacing Harris with Obama, Biden could circumvent this restriction and allow Obama to run for vice president and then assume the presidency again by Biden resigning during his second term.

Obama sighting: Guess what celeb played golf recently at West Palm's The Park?

This makes for a good story for a television or a novel but little else. First, I doubt that Biden or Obama would try this. Second, it would likely not work. The 12th Amendment reads that, "[N]o person constitutionally ineligible to the office of president shall be eligible to that of vice president of the United States." Since the former president would not be eligible to run for president, he is almost certainly barred from running for vice president. One could make an argument that Obama meets the qualifications stated in Article II, Clause 5, since he is over 35, a natural-born citizen, and a resident of the country for more than 14 years. He would be fine under Article II, but that seems a disingenuous argument at best and the courts would likely not support it.

The slightly more plausible theory is that President Biden would only serve briefly in his second term and then resign in favor of Vice President Harris, who then could serve out the term and run twice more. This is possible, but Biden would have to serve for at least two years after being elected again if Harris wanted to run for two more terms after finishing Biden’s second stint. The 22nd Amendment addresses this circumstance as well, and states in part, “[n]o person who has held the office of president, or acted as president, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected president shall be elected to the office of the president more than once.”

Many of the theories of presidential succession circulating through social media are fanciful at best. Some, as we can see above, are not workable. However, they are understandably popular issues of discussion as our leading candidates for president are not young. It’s probably worth thinking about for Donald Trump as well, since the former president is leading in early polls for the Republican nomination and is approaching 80 years old. It certainly is appropriate to consider the presidential succession under these circumstances but we should probably stick to the basic terms of the Constitution when doing so.

Pete Townshend tells us about his new Quadrophenia ballet and the future of The Who

The rock icon opens up about 'Quadrophenia, a Mod Ballet' – touring next year – his thoughts on researching setlists, and if more music and live shows from The Who are likely...

Pete Townshend has spoken to NME about next year’s production of Quadrophenia, A Mod Ballet –  as well as the turbulent past and uncertain future of The Who .

The dance adaptation of the band’s seminal 1973 album, currently in development and set to tour the UK in the summer of 2025, is Townshend’s first foray in ballet following projects in the media of opera and literature.

“What inspires me is trying to do something that has a slightly more ambitious thread,” he told NME . “It’s not me being pompous. It’s just something that seemed to fit more into the dis-conjunction that I felt when I left art school and ended up in the band. It felt like there was unfinished business for me, which was the art.”

A long-term ballet fan, Townshend envisioned the project after hearing early demos of his wife Rachel Fuller’s orchestral score of the album, which was first performed at the Royal Albert Hall in 2015 and recorded by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. “I heard her score and I remember saying to her, ‘I can just see dancers dancing’,” he said. “It had tones of Prokofiev about it.”

Alongside Fuller’s arranger Martin Batchelar, the pair began a collaboration with Sadlers Wells which saw Harry Styles choreographer Paul Roberts and director Rob Ashford pull together a group of young dancers from contemporary troupes such as BalletBoyz to bring ‘Quadrophenia’’s story of troubled mod Jimmy to balletic life.

“There was a poetic sensibility to what I was seeing,” Townshend said of early workshops. “I was just shocked and surprised. I thought, ‘Hey, there’s new shadow here, there are new shades, there’s new optimism’. I was never happy with the film. I felt the film was lazy. It was not based on my story and it didn’t include much of my music. So I thought here was an opportunity to do something that honours the music, but also possibly takes it into a new era, a new place.”

Recommended

Townshend also spoke about speculation that The Who’s shows at the Royal Albert Hall as part of Daltrey’s annual Teenage Cancer Trust concerts in March might have been their last ever , the chances of new material from the band emerging, and his thoughts on a hologram shows from the rock legends…

future past tour us

NME: Hi Pete. Is ballet a form you’ve wanted to dabble in for a while?

Pete Townshend : “I’ve been a fan of ballet. Kit Lambert, was The Who’s manager, who was the son of Constant Lambert, who was one of the founders of the Royal Opera House. He had a box in the Royal Opera House and I used to pop in there quite a lot or go with him. I used to go with Lord Goodman as well, the Labour peer – we’d hang out together and watch ballet. I won’t say I was a disciple of it, but I loved good ballet certainly. It was part of my education process. Kit Lambert was really keen that I tackled the issue of snobbery and inverse snobbery in rock, that I just battled it head on.

“I’m working on an opera at the moment, I’ve been working on one for a long time, The Age Of Anxiety , and I’m very fearless now about calling it an opera. It’s a fucking opera. Sorry. My friend Rufus Wainwright writes operas, I can write operas.”

Do you feel that the universal themes of ‘Quadrophenia’ suit all art forms?

“The young boy falling in love with a girl across the way and having a hero who lets him down? I’m sure there’s a Greek myth that inspired it for Shakespeare.  Romeo And Juliet  has a bit about it and even [three-act opera]  Peter Grimes  by Benjamin Britten has a bit of it. Those epic stories of young men struggling to find their way in an uncomfortable world.

“My obsession of the day is young women having a struggle to find their way in the modern world because of social media, its effects on them. I think young men tend to spend more time with pornography and video games than working out whether or not they look OK. I’m not looking for parallels for how ‘Quadrophenia’ should work in the modern day, I’m working to try to use it as a mythic tale which triggers something in the audience.”

You seem to have spent your entire career striving for something beyond rock…

“Funnily enough, in  The Age Of Anxiety , I mix rock and electronica and orchestral soundscapes together, and I’m not afraid of doing that. The only area I’d be wary of getting involved in would be complex jazz. I don’t have the musical literacy to do it, or the virtuosity to do it, but if I did I certainly would. I’ve got friends who did that from the rock world. Punk came along and called them prog rock but now we go back and what we look at with them is that a lot of their work was genuinely very interesting.

“What we forget, I think, is that punk was really necessary. In ‘Quadrophenia’, one of my remits for writing it was to wake the band up to the fact that we’d really lost connection with our core audience. We’d become bloated rock stars. Laser shows and frilly jackets and flying fingers and Keith Moon dressed as Adolf Hitler – it was all very, very strange. Whether in the middle of all that my arty-farty ideas were an equal, embarrassing self-indulgence had to be weighed out. There was something wrong with The Who and it had to be fixed. I felt that ‘Quadrophenia’ would help fix it.

“As performers we lost our connection with an audience and it was a real lesson in a time when bands like U2,   The Clash and Bruce Springsteen came along and their connection with the audience was much more actual, much more human, much more physical. That was a wake-up call as well for me. I don’t know that The Who ever managed to get back on track, but that was the function of ‘Quadrophenia’.”

The Who

Did you enjoy the recent Albert Hall Who shows?

“Not much. We did rehearse for it and I’m not gonna blame Roger for fucking up the rehearsal but the rehearsals were somewhat fucked up. We had rehearsal time, but we didn’t rehearse, we just talked. So when it came to the show, I realised there were quite a few chords that I’d forgotten.”

Might they be the last ever Who shows?

“No. I’m pretty sure there will [be more]. I can’t really see the point of making a big deal of [last Who shows], apart from the fact that it might help sell a few tickets. When we started the last US tour the year before last, some of the seats were not filled. An easy way to fill seats is to say ‘We’re not coming back’ or ‘This could be the last set of shows’. What I would prefer was that the band adjusted itself to the audience that wants to see it, rather than just saying ‘We need to fill arenas in order to go home with enough money to make the whole thing worthwhile’. The story of the end of The Who is gonna be when either Roger or I drop dead or can’t function anymore on the stage.

“A lot of the time when we’re on the stage together, it’s not all that comfortable and you can see that. And it’s sad to say that a lot of dedicated Who fans come to every show in order to see Roger hit me in the face again, for me to smash him over the head with a guitar or for one of us to drop dead.”

Roger has said that he’s happy to feel that that part of his life is over . Do you feel the same?

“I think it’s been over for a long time. The Who machine died when [bassist] John Entwistle died, because we were hanging on by a thread in a sense. John had already left the building in the way that Keith had already left the building. John had gone so deaf that he couldn’t hear himself play. So although he was still very virtuosic, a lot of the time he would be making mistakes and he couldn’t hear it. There was this sense that he was on his way out. Roger and I had a decision to make as to whether or not we would try to keep the flame burning, the brand going, when he died, and we were about to do a tour so we decided to do it. And that tour worked out to be quite successful.”

Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend of The Who perform during Teenage Cancer Trust 15th Anniversary Year Concerts at Royal Albert Hall on March 26, 2015 in London, England. (Photo by Mick Hutson/Getty Images)

Have you ever given up all ideas of going out with a big bang?

“I don’t think we’ve ever had that kind of idea. I must admit, I’m interested in the [Las Vegas] Sphere – just as a crazy, narcissistic art school thing. It’s interesting as a venue because it challenges you to beat the fabric of the theatre.”

Might hologram shows be something in The Who’s future?

“If somebody wants to do it I don’t know that I would stop them, but they’re not gonna get me in one of those grids.”

‘Who’ [2019] was a fitting addition to the band’s album canon – what are the chances of there being more?

“I don’t think there is. If there was a need or a place for a Who album, could I write the songs for it within six weeks? Of course I fucking could, it’s a piece of cake. The problem is I don’t think Roger wants to do it again. For me it would be a joy because I love writing songs, I love writing to a brief, I love having a commission, I love having a deadline and I love the feedback.

“I was so pleased that the critical response to the last Who album was so positive, I wasn’t expecting that and I was grateful for it and inspired by it. So where I am at the moment is I’m thinking ‘well, I might write the songs and then say to Roger, either you sing on them or I’m gonna put them out as a solo album and Who fans will love me for it.”

Does it make financial sense anymore for major established acts to make new albums?

“Haha! It’s never been about the money. The Who never made any money from fucking records anyway. Our managers were criminals. I’d never seen a Who royalty statement prior to our first audit, which we did while we were making ‘Quadrophenia’. It emerged that Kit Lambert had stolen all of my Italian publishing royalties to buy himself a palace in Venice. There are black swans in our business, and they’re the ones that always mop up all the money.

“Look at the legendary Jimi Hendrix , I saw him in LA in the last two weeks of his life. He was happy, he was really nice to me, and he hadn’t been always in the past. I said, ‘How you doing?’ and he said, ‘Pete, I’m broke’. He was huge, and he was broke. [But] we didn’t give a fuck about the money. I lived in a little house in Twickenham by the Thames, I was happy to be by the water. I had one car. I had a tiny little studio, I was really happy. I had a beautiful wife, lovely kids, great friends and never wanted for anything really, except some time to myself and some time to have with my family. So today I’ve got a sense that I’m lucky to be here and be fit enough to walk around the block and to work with younger musicians, to do some producing and mentoring.

“I’ve been thinking about whether or not I should try to come in sideways to Kier Starmer and say, ‘Listen, I’m a long-term Labour supporter, and I want to know who the fuck you are’. But,‘No Pete, no Pete, don’t do it, you’ll get used’. Because they use you for whatever it is that they want to use you for. Politicians often use you so that they can blame you for something that really should be blamed on them. So I’m enjoying my life at the moment.”

Roger said recently how annoyed he is about people wanting to know the setlist before shows. Is that a concern you share?

“No, no. [But] I’m just not really crazy about performing. I don’t mind it, I’m good at it but I don’t get the buzz that I see other performers get. Watching Robert Plant at the Kennedy Awards crying when somebody murdered one of his songs. I just think, ‘Fuck, this guy loves what he does, he loves what he’s done.’”

Pennsylvania GOP Senate candidate Dave McCormick unveils ‘pro-family’ agenda — including an IVF tax credit

SPRINGFIELD, Pa. — GOP Senate candidate Dave McCormick spoke with a toned, policy-focused agenda Wednesday as he revealed his plans to “Strengthen Pennsylvania Families” if elected — even proposing a tax credit for in vitro fertilization as Democrats campaign claiming Republicans would ban it.

“America cannot be strong if our families are weak,” the Gulf War vet told the audience at his Delaware County luncheon. “And if our families are in decline, America will decline.”

McCormick’s stop in “DelCo” came as the fourth leg of his “Building America’s Future” tour, an ambitious trek across the Keystone State to iron out policy proposals. McCormick’s three previous events focused on China, energy policy and “shaking up” Washington.

Dave McCormick, Republican U.S. Senate candidate from Pennsylvania, listens as Republican presidential candidate, former U.S. President Donald Trump speaks at a campaign rally at the Liacouras Center on June 22, 2024.

McCormick repeatedly cited inflation as a major issue contributing to the struggles American families face. Costs for pregnancy and postpartum care, as well as a family’s annual spending on each child, have all risen to five-figure levels and caused birth rates to decline under President Biden and incumbent Democratic Sen. Bob Casey — who McCormick noted has voted with Biden’s position 98% of the time.

Of the specific policies McCormick floated, two stuck out.

First, the former Bridgewater Associates CEO discussed his record of supporting in vitro fertilization for his employees before proposing a $15,000 federal tax credit for families using IVF to have children. The credit would be fully refundable and available for up to two tax years per family.

“As a company, we helped pay for fertility services like IVF, which are often not covered by insurance and can be prohibitively expensive,” McCormick said of his time as Bridgewater’s CEO. “As your senator, I will oppose any effort to restrict IVF. But I’ll go even further than that: Every family should get a $15,000 tax credit for fertility expenses like IVF.”

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Dave McCormick speaks to supporters at Voodoo Brewing Co. in Erie on April 24, 2024.

Second, McCormick called for banning social-media use for those under age 16, arguing the correlation of its use to depression and other mental-health issues among children constitutes a “tipping point” and demands action.

“We need to come together in a bipartisan way to address this crisis and protect children by properly treating kids under 16 as minors needing protection from the harmful effects of social media,” he said.

On other issues, McCormick expressed support for giving families more tax incentives — such as creating tax-free flexible spending accounts for families paying up to $10,000 for child-care costs and encouraging scholarship contributions.

McCormick also called for banning social-media use for those under age 16, arguing the correlation of its use to depression and other mental-health issues among children.

“Eligibility for the FSA would begin in the middle of pregnancy and be available to any family with earnings to fund it — and not be tied to a particular employer,” McCormick said.

He also touted school-choice vouchers as a means of upward mobility for poor children and their families.

“Pennsylvania deserves a senator who supports school choice,” McCormick said, attacking Casey for his support of the teachers unions that kept kids out of school during the pandemic. “Because choosing where your child goes to school should not be a privilege only reserved for wealthy and well-connected parents.”
