THE NATIONAL CIVIL WAR MUSEUM

The National Civil War Museum sits on a hill overlooking the city of Harrisburg. On the grounds of the museum, you will follow a red brick sidewalk called “The Walk of Valor.” It symbolizes the bloodshed during times of war and honors the names of Civil War veterans. Also outside the museum building, you will see the Moment of Mercy, which is a statue depicting Sgt. Kirkland.

The museum’s collection includes more than 4,400 artifacts and 21,000 archival pieces. Exhibits include A House Divided, Campaigns of 1862, The Peculiar Institution, Battle Map, First Shots, Civil War Music, and more.

BROAD STREET MARKET

The Broad Street Market is a collection of over 40 vendors. Vendors provide locally-grown, organic produce, meats, baked goods, and freshly prepared meals. 

Founded in 1860, Broad Street Market is one of the oldest markets in the country. The market played an integral part in the Civil War, as vendors fed over 300,000 Union soldiers. This historical market was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

PENNSYLVANIA STATE CAPITOL COMPLEX

The Pennsylvania State Building is a National Historic Landmark. You can take guided tours of the Capitol Complex , where points of interest include the Senate Library, watching a House of Senate session, the Main Rotunda, Senate, Supreme Court and House of Representatives, and the Capitol Shop. 

The guided tours last 30-40 minutes, or you can do a self-guided tour and explore at your own pace. There are food and drinks available onsite at the cafeteria-style Capitol Restaurant.

CITY ISLAND

City Island of Harrisburg, PA is surrounded by the longest river on the East Coast, the Susquehanna River. Throughout history, the river has been called many names, including Turkey Island, Maclay’s Island, Forster’s Island, and Hargast Island. The island was originally settled by the Susquehannocks and the Iroquois tribes.

CAPITAL AREA GREENBELT

The loop takes you around the city limits connecting parks, and museums, as well as a stretch of gardens and woods along the shores of the Susquehanna River. Many people use the loop in sections for hiking, walking, and mountain biking, and in the winter, you can find people cross-country skiing. 

FORT HUNTER MANSION AND PARK

Built on top of a hill overlooking the Susquehanna River, Fort Hunter Mansion and Park has had an interesting history. The park has served as a war fort, a hub for frontier commerce, as well as a luxurious private estate. Today, the estate and its grounds are open to the public.

There are guided tours available to see the inside of the mansion. The park surrounding the mansion contains 40+ acres to explore. There are walking trails, lawns to play games or have a picnic on, two children’s playgrounds, or you can canoe, kayak, or explore the river on a small motorized boat. 

There is a small gift shop on-site, a covered bridge, Tavern House, Centennial Barn, Hector Church, and the Fort Hunter Service Station. 

WHITAKER CENTER

In downtown Harrisburg, you’ll find the Whitaker Center , which features endless entertainment. From cinema features and science discovery labs to shows for all ages, there is always something to do at the Whitaker Center. 

Their big-screen features different movies throughout the day and changes frequently, so you’ll always have something new to watch. They always have a variety of live entertainment shows at any given time, which makes it the perfect place to spend a rainy or cold day in the city.

The Whitaker Center is also home to a Science Lab, where the public can explore the sciences and perform experiments.

PENNSYLVANIA NATIONAL FIRE MUSEUM

The Pennsylvania National Fire Museum is housed in a historic 1899 Victorian Firehouse. Dedicated to preserving the history of the fire service from the time of America’s Colonial days to the present, the PNFM is an exciting way to learn about the history of firefighting. 

Permanent exhibits include Gamewell Alarm System, Parade Hats, 1792 Hand Pumper, Memorial Wall, Patches, and Parade Apparatus. There is also a small gift shop on site.

The Alarm System exhibit features the Dauphin County Fire Dispatch Console that was in service during the nuclear incident at Three Mile Island in March of 1979. The Parade Hats exhibits include one of the largest parade hats collections and the Patches collection showcases almost 3,000 patches from fire companies throughout the United States.

The Memorial Hall honors those that have died in the line of duty by memorializing their names on 3/4″ brass expansion rings that have been cut, pressed flat, and engraved. The 1972 Hand Pumper is an early version of today’s firetruck. It is a single-deck, end stroke, two-piston hand pump capable of discharging about 150 gallons per minute, where water had to be physically poured into the wooden box. 

JOHN HARRIS AND SIMON CAMERON MANSION

First constructed in 1766, the John Harris and Simon Cameron Mansion has been designated a National Historic Landmark since 1976. Tours of the mansion are done by the Historical Society. 

Since its beginning, there have been several additions and restoration projects to the mansion. Points of interest on the tour include the Victorian Parlor with its legendary mirrors, Gen. Simon Cameron’s office complete with his own desk and cabinets, Richard C. Haldeman’s library, the Solarium, the dining room, the colonial bedroom, a Victorian bedroom, and the tour-de-force 1920 Art Deco bathroom.

There is also a small gift shop on site. 

PRIDE OF THE SUSQUEHANNA RIVERBOAT CRUISE

Built in 1988, The Pride of the Susquehanna Riverboat is one of the only six remaining riverboats left with an authentic paddlewheel in the United States. The boat is a replica of the riverboats used in the late 1800s.

The riverboat offers public and private cruises during the warmer months, as well as special event cruises, including Jazzin’ on the Pride, Classic Dinner Cruises, Sunset Dinner Cruises, Murder Mystery Dinner Cruises, Wine on Wednesdays, and Princess and Superhero Cruises. They also offer educational cruises. 

Millworks is a Harrisburg favorite for both locals and tourists and celebrates art, food, and brewery. This award-winning eatery, brewery, and events space feature local growers and local artists.

The restaurant and brewery seat over 200 people and has a rooftop Biergarten, as well as an open-air courtyard. 

INDIAN ECHO CAVERNS

The Indian Echo Caverns are one of the most visited attractions throughout the Eastern part of the United States. The caverns remain at a constant 52 degrees, and they were originally used for storage and shelter for Native Americans.

The caves have had many names throughout the years, including the Wilson Cave, the Hummelstown Cave, and simply, Echo Cave. Once the caves became commercialized, they became known as Indian Echo Caverns. These limestone cavers are more than 440 million years old. 

Tours through the cave run about an hour long. On-site you can also visit the petting zoo, picnic area, gift shop, and playground.  You can also try your luck at the Gem Mill Junction, where you may find gemstones, chunks of amethyst, jasper, calcite, agate, and more. 

DAY TRIP TO HERSHEY

Known as the “Sweetest Place on Earth”, Hershey, Pennsylvania is home to the Hershey Chocolate Factory, amusement park, museum, and much more.

1. Fort Hunter Mansion and State Park

Fort Hunter Mansion and State Park is found just past the northern suburbs of Harrisburg and makes for an easy day trip away from the city.

Before the stone mansion was built, this was an important crossroads heading west. A fort was positioned here from the mid 18th century as European settlers began to move inland from the east coast.

It provides a variety of entertaining outdoor activities for you to enjoy in addition to providing stunning views of the river and City Island.

Enjoy the wonderful views of the Susquehanna River while strolling along the asphalt walkway.

Your group will have plenty of space to roam thanks to the 4-mile beachfront walking track. The riverside is dog-friendly, so bring your closest friends along for a break from the bustle of the big city! While strolling along the Susquehanna, you may enjoy the open water, picturesque bridges, and boats as well as colourful flower gardens, art installations, statues, and promenades.

Many of the city’s major festivals and cultural events, including MusicFest, Kipona, and Pride, are held at Riverfront Park throughout the year.

This Northeastern U.S. City Was Just Named the Best Place to Retire

Ready to retire ? Then, you may want to consider relocating to the Keystone State.

U.S. News & World Report released its annual Best Places to Retire rankings for 2024. To reach its conclusion, the team analyzed 150 of the largest metropolitan areas in the U.S., including Puerto Rico, to nail down which are best for retirees .

The researchers weighed each destination on a 10-point scale based on a weighted average of six indexes: affordability, happiness, desirability, taxes for retirees, the job market (if you want to work into your golden years), and health care quality. U.S. News surveyed people approaching retirement age, collecting 3,500 responses, asking participants to indicate “what attributes of a retirement destination were most important to them” based on those indexes. 

And after crunching the numbers, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, came out on top. 

As U.S. News & World Report explained, Harrisburg came out on top thanks to its high marks in health care, low taxes, and overall happiness of residents. 

"You can have a really good quality of life in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania," Joy Daniels, a broker and owner at Joy Daniels Real Estate Group in Harrisburg, told U.S. News & World Report. "It would be a fabulous place to retire because you would never run out of something to do."

The publication also noted that Harrisburg has plenty going on, from seasonal attractions, several sports teams, and gorgeous summer weather that’s ideal for spending time outside fishing and exploring its natural landscapes. 

"We also have a lot of creeks, and all the beautiful views and wildlife around those that all funnel into the Susquehanna," Catherine Azeles, a partner and investment consultant at Conrad Siegel, additionally told U.S. News & World Report. "And that comes with biking and music and art. And lots of birdwatching."

As for the other destinations that landed in the top 5, well, it’s a clean sweep for Pennsylvania. 

Reading, Lancaster, Scranton, and Allentown were the No. 2 through No. 5 spots respectively. In sixth place was New York City, but that was followed closely by York, Pennsylvania. So, the moral of the story is, if you’re thinking of retiring, absolutely do not sleep on Pennsylvania as a great option.

Do I need to have a driver’s license to rent a car from Hertz Car Rental - Harrisburg International Airport?

A valid driver's license issued from your state or country of residence must be presented at the time of rental.  The driver's license must be valid for the entire rental period. If the driver's license is in a language other than English, and the rental is in the United States, an International Driver's Permit is recommended. In all cases, a valid driver's license issued from your home country must be provided, whether or not you possess an International Driver's Permit.  You will not be allowed to rent a Hertz vehicle with only an International Driver's Permit.

International customers renting in the U.S. are also required to present a valid international-issued driver’s license at the time of rent and a valid passport in the same name, as a second form of identification.

Mobile/Digital Driver License

A mobile or digital driver’s license does not replace a valid physical driver’s license and Hertz customers will still need to supply their hard copy license until further notice.

Rental of a 15-passenger van in California requires a commercial driver’s license to transport a non-profit group or for commercial use. The commercial driver’s license requirement does not apply to personal use. 15- passenger vans may not be used to transport passengers for hire.

Do I need to take out insurance on my rental car from Hertz Car Rental - Harrisburg International Airport?

If renting in California:

Hertz provides no liability protection under the terms of the Rental Agreement to the renter from claims of injury by others against you resulting from an accident. Your personal/business insurance may cover your liability. Exceptions : Hertz will provide primary liability protection up to the statutory minimum limits to international customers (driver's license indicates an address outside the USA) renting in California. Please also refer to Liability Insurance Supplement (LIS) below.

If renting in Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, South Carolina, Virginia, or West Virginia:

Upon signing the Rental Agreement, Hertz provides primary liability protection. However, such protection is generally no more than the minimum limits required by individual state law. See Financial Responsibility Limits by State.

If renting in any other state in the U.S.A.:

Hertz' liability protection is secondary to any other insurance coverage available to you. If you do not have liability insurance and/or the limits of liability of the insurance coverage available to you are not sufficient to cover claims by others against you, and Hertz, as the vehicle owner, provides liability protection due to an accident, you will indemnify Hertz for any and all payments made.

However, Hertz makes available additional liability protection, which is primary, if the optional Liability Insurance Supplement, LIS, is purchased.

Liability Insurance Supplement (LIS)

Liability Insurance Supplement (LIS) provides coverage for you and other authorized operators of your rental vehicle for third party claims.

LIS is primary protection to customer’s personal policy and provides the first $1,000,000.00 of combined bodily injury and/or property damage protection for each occurrence regardless of the state in which the accident occurs. On rentals in California and Florida the maximum combined single limit is $2,000,000.00 for liability protection only.

LIS provides up to $1,000,000.00 of Uninsured/Underinsured protection for bodily injury sustained while driving the rental vehicle.

There are some exclusions to this coverage, which we feel you should know. Under LIS, in the event of an accident, you will not be protected for third party liability:

• If LIS is not accepted at commencement of the rental or if you fail to pay the charges for LIS.
• If you or an authorized driver operated the rental vehicle in violation of the Rental Agreement, including, but not limited to, operating the vehicle while legally intoxicated or under the influence of alcohol, drugs or other absorbed elements; permit the use of the vehicle by anyone other than authorized operators; for purposes that could properly be charged as a felony, to tow or push anything, or in a speed contest or for driver training.
• If the vehicle or LIS coverage was obtained by fraud or misrepresentation.

LIS is third party liability coverage only, except where permitted by law or pertaining to Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage . LIS does not cover personal injury to you or any authorized operator of the rental vehicle or to your or their family members who are related by blood, marriage or adoption and reside in your or their household.

Loss Damage Waiver (LDW)

In most states, in the event of any other loss or damage to the car, regardless of fault, your financial responsibility extends to the full value of the car at the time of rental, less its salvage value, plus expenses for towing, storage impound fees, an administrative fee and a reasonable charge for loss of use. If your responsibility differs in the state in which you rent, it will be stated in Paragraph 4, of the Rental Agreement. In California, in the event of any loss or damage to the car regardless of fault, your financial responsibility will in no event exceed the fair market value, plus actual charges for towing, storage, impound fees, and an administrative fee. In California and Nevada, your responsibility for loss or damage to the car from vandalism unrelated to theft will not exceed $500.00 in California and $2,500.00 in Nevada and you are not responsible for theft, regardless of purchasing LDW, unless the theft results from your fault.. In Illinois, your responsibility for loss or damage for any cause other than theft is limited to $15,500.00. Loss or damage related to theft is limited to $2,000.00, unless the theft results from your fault.  In New York, your financial responsibility shall not exceed (i) the actual and reasonable costs that Hertz incurs to repair the car, including costs for towing, storage and impound fees or that Hertz would have incurred if the car was repaired or (ii) the fair market value of the car immediately before the damages occurred, as determined by the applicable market for the retail saleof the car less disposal proceeds. Your responsibility for theft of the car shall not exceed the reasonable costs incurred by Hertz for loss due to theft up to its fair market value, if it is established that you or any authorized operator failed to exercise reasonable care or aided or abetted in the theft. 

• However Hertz offers Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) an optional service, which for an additional daily charge relieves you of all financial responsibility for the loss or damage to the rental car, whether or not you have insurance to cover such damage, provided the car is used in accordance with the terms of the Rental Agreement.
• The cost of LDW may vary depending on location or car type and is charged per each full or partial day of rental.

F.Y.I. – You are under no obligation to purchase LDW or any other optional service as a condition of rental. Your own personal insurance may provide protection for loss or damage to the rental vehicle depending on the state in which you live and the type of policy you have. Also, various credit card companies provide cardholders with some degree of damage protection providing you use their credit card for the rental and decline the optional LDW offered by Hertz at time of rental. The coverage and limits vary. Your policy or credit card coverage should be thoroughly checked for the specific terms and conditions associated with rental vehicles. Remember, most credit card insurance is supplemental, which means it will only reimburse you for loss or damages over and above what is covered by any other insurance you may have and will not cover you for any damage, regardless of cause, if you accept LDW.

Adding LDW after car is on rental: You may not change the option once the rental has begun, without returning the car and starting a new rental agreement.  This will result in the contract being closed out and charges being assessed for the time the vehicle is kept at least 1-day minimum, and a new rental contract will begin.

Cancellation of LDW - New York rentals only:

On New York rentals only, LDW may be cancelled at no charge, within 24 hours of its purchase provided the renter (i) has rented the car for 2 or more days; (ii) appears in person at any Hertz rental location with the car, which shall be subject to inspection.

Personal Accident Insurance (PAI)

Personal Accident Insurance (PAI), offered in combination with PEC, allows you to elect accidental death and accidental medical expense coverage for yourself and your passengers during the rental period of the vehicle.  

PAI coverage:

Total benefits for any one accident are limited to $225,000.00 and are payable in addition to any other coverage for which you or your passengers are eligible. However, your benefits provided by other coverage may be affected by the PAI benefits. Rentals originating in the State of Mississippi do not have a single accident limit of $225,000.00.

If this coverage is accepted, the benefits for you apply to all accidental injuries during your rental period, regardless of whether you are actually in the car. Your passengers are also covered, but only for incidents occurring while they occupy the Hertz rental car.

The renter shall be deemed to have converted the rental vehicle whenever the rental vehicle is not returned to Hertz by the return date or by the extended return date. This is a summary only and other restrictions may apply.

Personal Effects Coverage (PEC)

Personal Effects Coverage (PEC), offered in combination with PAI, is an option that insures against risk of loss or damage to help protect your personal belongings while renting from Hertz. By electing PEC you will be insured throughout the entire rental period. PEC is insurance protection and pays in addition to any other policy you may have (such as a Homeowner’s policy). However, your benefits provided by other coverage may be affected by the PEC benefit. PEC insurance coverage includes those personal effects owned by you and those members of your immediate family traveling with you during the rental period who are permanent residents of your household. PEC does not extend to non-family members traveling with you.

PEC applies to personal effects only and not to car equipment. The following are examples of items NOT covered by the PEC:

• Automobiles and their equipment, motorcycles, boats, motors or other accessories, add-ons, instruments)
• household furniture, currency, coins, stamps, deeds, bullion, securities, tickets, documents
• CB radios, radar detectors, guns, merchandise for sale or fine art
• Contact lenses, artificial teeth and limbs
• Perishables

Personal effects not covered loss by mysterious disappearance, nor does it cover::

• Loss or damage caused by wear and tear, gradual deterioration, moths, vermin, inherent vice or damage sustained due to any process or while actually being worked upon and resulting there from, or while in the care, custody or control of any common carrier.
• Loss by nuclear reaction, radiation or radioactive contamination.
• Loss caused by any act of war.
• Loss or damage due to theft unless reported by Police.

Also, PEC does not cover:

• Loss caused by war or any act of war;
• Loss by nuclear reaction, radiation or radioactive contamination;
• Any loss or damage sustained to property while in the care, custody or control of any common carrier;
• Loss or damage due to theft unless reported to Police.

If loss or damages occur, completion of claim form must accompany claim. Forms are available at all Hertz corporate locations.

Please note that PAI and PEC are not available separately and must be taken in combination.

What if I return my car late to Hertz Car Rental - Harrisburg International Airport?

Corporate locations only:

Vehicles returned 30 minutes late or more are charged for an additional part or full day, depending on the time of return (this is shown on your receipt in the 'Initial Charges' section). For vehicles returned more than 12 hours late an additional charge of $12 per day, up to a maximum of 5 days ($60), will also be applied (shown in the 'Service Charges/Taxes' section).

What if I only need a rental car one way from Hertz Car Rental - Harrisburg International Airport? Do I have to rent for a roundtrip?

Intercity fee is for rentals returned to a location other than the location specified in the Rental Agreement. If the rental has already started at the time the change is made, a Return Change Fee may also apply. Note: Tesla reservations are not allowed to return one way.

Can anyone rent a vehicle from Hertz Car Rental - Harrisburg International Airport?

You must meet the minimum age restrictions, present a valid driver's license and possess an acceptable charge card in your name. 

You must also be in good standing with Hertz and its affiliated companies and not be subject to a Do Not Rent requirement from any of Hertz, Dollar, Thrifty or Firefly.

Revolutionizing the Electric Vehicle Landscape: PennDOT's Bold Move Ensures Reliability and Future-readiness

HARRISBURG, PA — Fueling Pennsylvania’s transition towards cleaner, safer, and more affordable transportation, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has revealed its ingenious Electric Vehicle Charger Reliability and Accessibility Accelerator (EVC-RAA) program. This initiative will pivot around enhancing existing electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, making them not just operational, but also more reliable.

The EVC-RAA program is a product of the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), a forward-looking piece of legislation aimed at breathing life into infrastructural projects across the nation. Thanks to BIL, PennDOT is taking sustainable and decisive strides towards addressing climate change and transforming the future of Pennsylvania’s transport ecosystem.

Mike Carroll, PennDOT Secretary, echoed Governor Shapiro’s commitment to boost access to alternative fuels across the state. “Our efforts are aimed at making sure early adopters of EV technology have the means to maintain or upgrade their equipment and stay competitive in the evolving EV market,” Carroll stated.

The generous funding pool of EVC-RAA was opened up for eligible businesses and organizations, keen to repair or replace listed non-operational chargers, on May 23, 2024. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has labeled 174 locations eligible for funding, driving the momentum towards a greener Pennsylvania transportation scenario.

The BIL has played an instrumental role in conceptualizing the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program. NEVI’s main objective is to empower states with funds to strategically position EV charging infrastructure, develop an interconnected network for data collection, access, and reliability. It has stipulated that a tenth of NEVI funds be reserved for granting to states and localities needing additional support for EV infrastructure deployment. PennDOT took advantage of the EVC-RAA program, a subset using the set-aside funds, and received a whopping $5 million grant under this initiative.

Per the FHWA directives, these funds are exclusively for upgrading charging stations to meet FHWA standards. This includes requirements to operate at least four charging ports and maintain an uptime exceeding 97 percent—a key step to ensure a more reliable charging network.

Despite these significant advancements, it’s clear that Pennsylvania still has a considerable opportunity to attract billions of dollars in federal funds across a spectrum of federal grant programs through the BIL, formally known as the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). PennDOT has stepped up its efforts to educate communities and organizations about these opportunities, creating an information-packed webpage detailing federal grant opportunities.

PennDOT’s proactive approach is paving the way, quite literally, for a more sustainable future. Through the EVC-RAA program and other initiatives, they are not only ensuring Pennsylvania’s infrastructure remains robust and efficient but are also inspiring other states to follow suit.

This is more than just about fixing chargers; it’s about securing a greener, cleaner future where electric vehicles are the norm rather than the exception. For PennDOT, and indeed for Pennsylvania, the road ahead is electrified and bright.

“Every dollar can make a huge difference for families right now, so I encourage everyone to search our website for themselves and their loved ones to see if they’re owed any unclaimed property,” Treasurer Stacy Garrity said in a release. “We’re all still getting hit by inflation with high prices at the grocery store, and the price of gas is climbing again. I want to get this money back where it belongs – in the pockets of hardworking Pennsylvanians.”

In fiscal year 2022-23, treasury returned almost $274 million statewide, the most unclaimed property ever in a single year, officials said.

More than 1 in 10 Pennsylvanians is owed unclaimed property, and the average claim is worth about $1,600, officials said.

Over the past three years, more than $9.7 million has been returned to Berks Countians.

In total, the office is working to return more than $4.5 billion in unclaimed property.

To see if you have money available, search treasury’s unclaimed property database at patreasury.gov/unclaimed-property . A claim can be field online. The office also ran a listing in the Reading Eagle on May 23.

Unclaimed property includes dormant bank accounts, uncashed checks, forgotten stocks and insurance policies.

State law requires businesses to report unclaimed property to treasury after three years of dormancy.

Unclaimed property can also include tangible property, such as jewelry or other valuables stored in abandoned safe deposit boxes. Tangible property may be auctioned by treasury after three years of trying to locate the rightful owner. All auction proceeds are available in perpetuity for the rightful owner to claim.

Treasury often receives military decorations and memorabilia as unclaimed property, usually from safe deposit boxes, and works diligently to find the veterans who earned them or their families. Military decorations and memorabilia are never auctioned.

Since taking office in January 2021, officials said, Garrity has returned 412 military decorations and memorabilia, including 10 Purple Hearts and three Bronze Stars. About 450 military decorations remain in the vault, including five associated with Berks. Anyone wanting to help the office find the rightful owners can visit patreasury.gov/unclaimed-property/medals .
