Now explore Kerala’s exquisite beauty in one day; Heli tourism services from tomorrow

 alt=

Kochi: Tourists visiting Kerala can now brace themselves for an extraordinary adventure that promises to unveil the hidden wonders of our state from a vantage point never witnessed before. Kerala Tourism is launching helicopter tourism services from tomorrow, which will facilitate the visitors to enjoy a panoramic view of the state’s natural assets in a single day, and thus save time that would have otherwise been lost in travelling from destination to destination.

Tourism Minister P A Mohamed Riyas will flag off the first of the Heli tourism services at CIAL (Cochin International Airport Ltd), Nedumbassery, on Saturday. The web platform created for the facilitation of Heli tourism trips and services will also be launched during the programme. Initially, the services will cover 11 main tourist destinations across the state. Helicopters, generously accommodating 6 to 12 passengers, have been readied and set to take flight, signaling the start of a new era of exploration.

Heli tourism will open doors to unparalleled opportunities for the state. The project will also help in enhancing the connectivity to major tourism centres besides facilitating the arrival of more tourists to these destinations, Minister Muhammed Riyas told ‘Manorama’. Kerala Tourism will function as the facilitator for the Heli tourism project, the advent of which signals the establishment of world-class infrastructure within the state, the minister noted.

The helipads at Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Jadayupara, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam Alappuzha, Idukki, Munnar, Kumarakom, Kozhikode and Kasaragod are being utilized for the Heli tourism services. The authorities plan to construct more helipads at tourist centres like Bekal Fort in the second phase of the project. The ambitious project is being initiated at a time when more and more tourists are arriving in the state on luxury cruise ships. Most of these luxury liners berth here for only a single day. The Heli tourism will prove beneficial to the travelers in them, Riyas added. The project is being implemented on a public-private partnership basis. Kerala Tourism will sign a pact with several agencies, having the recognition of the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), for the project implementation.

As the first helicopters take flight tomorrow, a new chapter in exploration begins. Tourists, fasten your seatbelts, open your eyes wide, and let the adventure unfold – the skies are calling, and a symphony of wonders awaits.

Kerala will form heli-tourism policy soon: Tourism minister P A Mohamed Riyas

Tourism Minister Mohamed Riyas gets down from a helicopter after launching the heli-tourism project in Kochi on Saturday. The chopper is being operated by Chipsan Aviation | T P Sooraj

KOCHI: Kerala will soon have a heli-tourism policy, said Tourism Minister P A Mohamed Riyas in Kochi on Saturday. He was inaugurating the state government’s heli-tourism project ‘Sky Escapes’ in association with Chipsan Aviation at the Kochi airport.

Riyas said the government is considering a heli-tourism policy in the state. “Heli-tourism policy will be the first in the country. It will help popularise the concept and attract more tourists. We are planning to make the project more people-friendly. We are now exploring the potential of heli-tourism,” he said.

He said the state government will adorn the role of a facilitator in the project. According to him, the infrastructure for the project will be developed with the participation of private players. A micro website containing information about the heli-tourism service was also launched. “As part of the project, we will coordinate with helicopter operators. We expect more helicopter operators to associate with the project.

More helipads will be developed by the state government in association with private companies,” he said He said that the advantage of heli-tourism is that tourists can explore all destinations without consuming time. “Kerala is a densely populated state with high vehicle density and tourists often hesitate to visit all tourist destinations due to traffic blocks.

However, heli-tourism will help tourists reach all destinations in a short time,” he said. Tourism secretary K Biju, Tourism director P B Nooh, District Collector N S K Umesh and KTIL chairman S K Saneesh took part in the event. The helicopter took off from Kochi airport with two couples to Munnar as part of the event.

With Kochi as hub, Kerala’s helitourism to take off today

Kochi, thiruvananthapuram, kollam, jatayu rock, backwaters of kumarakom and alappuzha and hill stations will be connected through helitourism project..

heli tourism service

Kochi: The Kerala Tourism Department is launching a Helitaxi project which will allow tourists to explore the state by air. State Tourism Minister PA Mohammed Riyas will launch the Heli Tourism service at Nedumbassery in Kochi on Saturday.

In the initial phase, helitaxi will connect Kochi to destinations such as Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Jatayu Rock, backwaters of Kumarakom and Alappuzha and hill stations. The project envisages Kochi as the heli tourism hub.

Censoring of ‘Governor’: Kochi theatre group to approach court

The Department of Tourism will act as a facilitator to support licensed operators to run the helitaxi service. Tourism department said that the government will not engage in direct services, operations, or provide financial support.

No new airstrips

The government is not planning to develop new airstrips for the project, instead existing operational helipads will be utilised. In the next phase, the government will tie-up with private landowners to expand the project.

The helitaxis will have three main services – short distance rides, connecting major destinations and curated packages. In the future, the tourism department is planning to explore extending the service for pilgrim destinations.

The tourism minister, in a statement, said that the cost would depend on flying time and operator charges, with a competitive pricing model offering tourists various options. The helicopters will be able to carry 6-12 passengers at a time.

“The helitaxis will help tourists reduce time spent for travel and thereby cover maximum destinations. This will be a major boost to Kerala tourism,” he said.

According to the Tourism department, there was a 20 percent increase in domestic tourists in the first half of 2023.

A helicopter can now deliver you to 11 Greek islands in a quarter of the time a ferry takes

  • A new company, hoper, offers scheduled helicopter flights to 11 Greek destinations.
  • Flights drastically cut travel time compared to traditional ferries, which can up to take six hours.
  • More companies are offering premium travel options, like Blade and Uber's helicopter services.

Insider Today

Greece's island-goers can now fly to some of the country's most remote destinations in under 45 minutes.

Athens-based helicopter company hoper, which launched this summer, is the first that lets customers book scheduled flights to and from 11 destinations. Visitors can fly from Athens, Mykonos, and Santorini to other islands like Antiparos, Spetses, and Tinos.

One-way fares start at $195 and can go up to about $380, depending on location. A 48-minute flight from Athens to Mykonos, without any luggage, costs nearly $440 for the end of August, according to hoper's website.

Related stories

"With hoper, we turn hours into minutes, and travelers earn up to a full day of vacation," said hoper CEO Demitris Memos in a press release last month.

Ferry services in Greece tend to stop at multiple islands, adding to travel time. For instance, ferry trips from Athens to Mykonos start at $46 and can take up to six hours.

Hoper also offers chartered helicopter flights for the same routes.

Helicopter companies globally are increasingly offering flights — chartered or scheduled — for people willing to pay a premium to slash time spent traveling. Locals don't always love the extra noise, though. New York City is eyeing regulations for helicopters after noise complaints soared in 2023, compared to the prior year.

Earlier this week , six of Marriott's most luxurious hotels in New York City said they are offering free helicopter airport transfers to some of their top-paying guests.

The flights will be operated by Blade, a private helicopter services company that launched in 2014. Operating in New York, Southern California, and the Bay Area, Blade sells private or shared rides to airports and places like the Hamptons.

Blade competes with Uber's helicopter services and newer players like Archer and Volocopter, part of a booming industry betting on air taxis becoming more mainstream.

Hoper Helicopter

In May, an Athens-based aviation company launched the nation’s first and only commercial helicopter service dubbed Hoper (we hope that they mean hop ). Unlike the existing charter services, it runs regularly scheduled flights from Athens to the pearls of the Aegean.

“It became obvious that by flying there were significant savings in terms of time, but that at the same time it wasn’t hugely expensive if you shared the cost with other flyers,” Dimitris Kossyfas, COO of Hoper, told Robb Report . “There is a need to be able to travel between the Greek islands and between Athens and the islands in a more efficient manner.”

That’s putting it lightly. Say you want to go from Athens to Patmos. With Hoper, it’s not a direct flight (yet): you’ll need to fly Athens to Mykonos and then onward and it takes about an hour and a half. But what’s the alternative? An overnight ferry that takes nine to 10 hours, that’s what. Even if you book a commercial airplane flight to another island (like Mykonos), you’ll face a taxi ride to change ports and then a ferry. It’s a similar story for Folegandros, and many others.

“Affluent people who have a house in one of the islands usually either fly to a destination and then take their speedboat, or go directly from Athens on their boat. The helicopter is much more efficient in terms of cost and in terms of time,” says Kossyfas, noting that the boat fuel alone could be more than the cost of the helicopter flight.

Tinos Island in Greece

While popular islands like Mykonos and Santorini might not notice the impact of the new flight service, smaller islands that were once inconvenient to access certainly will. Now, what’s to stop the crowd that always settled for Santorini deciding to look off the beaten path to islands more pristine? But Kossyfas says that, at least for now, Hoper won’t upset the balance of island power.

“We aren’t there yet because of the low capacity of the helicopters,” says Kossyfas. “It’s one, maximum two, flights per day with four people. It cannot have a significant footprint yet. But eventually it does create a new opportunity.”

Hawaii’s Tourism Agency to Get Its First Budget in Two Years

Dawit Habtemariam

July 3rd, 2024 at 11:47 AM EDT

Legislators have stripped away the Hawaii Tourism Authority's funding and autonomy over the past few years. By finally getting a budget, the agency seems to be winning trust that it can manage tourism responsibly.

Dawit Habtemariam

Hawaii Governor Josh Green is expected to sign a series of bills that will give the Hawaii Tourism Authority a new mandate and budget — its first one in two years — by July 11.

The Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) is expected to have a budget of over $60 million for the 2025 fiscal year. Over the past two years, lawmakers have excluded the agency from the state budget. The tourism board has been forced to request funding from the state’s budgeting and finance department, with the governor’s and lawmakers’ approval.

“We’re confident and have gotten zero indications that we are at risk the way we have been in previous years,” said Ilihia Gionson, public affairs officer of the Hawaii Tourism Authority . “We don’t have any indication that our funding is in jeopardy.”

Winning Back Favor

The new budget comes after a series of cutbacks by legislators. Last year, there had been talks to dissolve the agency, with two bills in the legislature.  In 2021, the legislature removed the agency’s dedicated funding stream from lodging tax collections.

With a budget, the agency’s board of directors can hire a new CEO, said Gionson. The last CEO, John De Fries, left the position in September. Since then, Daniel Nahoopii has served as interim president and CEO.

“You wouldn’t necessarily want to recruit a leader not knowing what the future of the organization is,” said Gionson.

Gionson said the slow recovery of Maui’s economy in the wake of the August wildfire last year demonstrated the value of tourism to legislators. The agency has launched multiple marketing campaigns to encourage tourists to return.

“We’ve rebuilt trust to the extent that we got a budget when the past two years we didn’t,” Gionson said.

Hawaii Tourism’s New Formal Job: Destination Manager

The governor is also expected to sign a bill that explicitly adds the responsibility of destination management into the Hawaii Tourism Authority’s statute. Over the past few years, the authority has taken a more active role in destination management, which is the practice of mitigating environmental damage, overcrowding, poor visitor behavior and other negative consequences from mass tourism.

Gionson said that with a codified responsibility, other agencies would be enticed to participate in the authority’s destination management initiatives, such as visitor education and implementing solutions to overtourism at attractions and infrastructure.

Hawaii’s State Agencies to Adopt Regenerative Tourism

Last week, the governor signed Senate Bill 2659. It incorporates a regenerative framework into the Hawaii State Planning Act and the state’s “tourism functional plan,” or documents that guide state and local government operations.

“We’re excited to see these principles make their way into one of the foundational planning documents for the entire state,” said Gionson.

At the moment, one of the challenges of implementing regenerative tourism is the lack of a standardized framework or metrics for measuring regenerative tourism, according to Skift Research’s Regenerative Tourism: Fact from Fiction Report .

The bill doesn’t explicitly define regenerative tourism, but HTA defines it as supporting tourism that is net positive for locals and the environment, Gionson said.

Locals have had a complicated relationship with tourism. Many have been frustrated with its negative impact on their quality of life and environment.

To see what regenerative tourism could look like in practice, Gionson pointed to programs piloted by Hawaii’s state parks that incorporate community input and stewardship.

“Perhaps some departments aren’t built for addressing tourism directly, but there are those opportunities to build experiences, to build community participation and collaboration,” said Gionson.

Woman spends night in Bell Gorge after breaking leg during fall from ledge

A small group of people on a cliff face in a stunning gorge.

A woman spent the night at a Kimberley gorge after she fell and broke her leg.

The incident saw witnesses rally together and attend to the woman prior to the arrival of emergency services.

What's next?

The woman has now been flown to Broome for treatment.

A woman has spent the night at a remote gorge after breaking her leg at a popular tourist site in far north Western Australia.

The woman, 52, was holidaying with her husband and climbing a ledge in the lower sections of Bell Gorge, 2,400 kilometres north of Perth, when she slipped off the edge at about 11:30am on Sunday.

Witnesses reported hearing the woman's leg snap and hearing screams after she fell.

A travelling retired GP and a nurse who administered first aid were among those who assisted the woman.

They secured her leg with a snakebite splint and stayed with her for several hours until more help arrived.

Several members of the public managed to make contact with emergency services via beacons and satellite phones.

But extra assistance was hours away due to the gorge, situated on the remote Gibb River Road, being nearly 300km from the nearest town of Fitzroy Crossing.

ABC Pilbara 's Verity Gorman was at the scene and sat with the woman while maintaining contact with emergency services.

Ms Gorman's brother and his friend made their way back to the car park to alert rangers and bring in supplies.

"I had no phone reception but I thought I'd try taking my phone off aeroplane mode and called 000 and it directed me to the service that allows you to message emergency services," Gorman said.

"The nurse and the retired GP did an amazing job helping the woman and monitoring her condition.

"She was also an absolute trooper and remained in amazing spirits."

A ranger and paramedic arrived several hours later and were able to provide pain relief.

An anaesthetist visiting the gorge from Perth helped get the woman onto a stretcher after strapping her leg.

Overnight stay

Kimberley Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) superintendent Leon Gardiner told ABC Kimberley the woman was en route to Broome on Monday morning after spending the night at the gorge alongside emergency staff.

A Broome SES team was flown to an airstrip near the gorge and hiked down to where the woman was to help with the chopper rescue.

The helicopter arrived at about 6:30pm on Sunday.

It took about1.5 hours for SES volunteers to arrive on ground near the scene and reach the location, where they remained with the injured woman.

"There were medical crews with the casualty overnight, along with our crews providing a level of support and, as I understand it, her condition was stable through all of that," Mr Gardiner said.

He said the situation was a reminder for travellers to exercise vigilance.

"The challenges of some of these locations through the Kimberley – the remoteness, the ability to communicate and get to these locations in a timely manner – present a range of challenges," Mr Gardiner said.

"The Kimberley is a remote place and often requires satellite communications and it can take time to coordinate resources and safe rescue plan to be able to get people back to medical care."

He said essentials included communication, first aid supplies, plenty of food and water and the means to alert authorities in areas with no phone reception, such as a satellite phone or emergency beacon.

Royal Canadian Air Force Celebrates its Centennial during Canada Day Flypast in Ottawa

From: National Defence

News release

To mark its Centennial, the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) held its largest flypast in 20 years on Canada Day. 49 aircraft took part in the 20-minute long ‘parade in the sky’ featuring historic, current, and future Canadian military aircraft.

July 1, 2024 – Ottawa – National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces

The afternoon celebration began at 12:30 pm with a special appearance by the Canadian Forces Snowbirds and concluded with another flyover by the Snowbirds and CF-18 Demonstration aircraft. The CF-18 on the Demonstration Team bears a distinct RCAF Centennial paint scheme.

Ranging in size from small two seat training aircraft like the CT-156 Harvard II to the largest transport planes in the RCAF like the CC-177 Globemaster and new CC-330 Husky, the flypast afforded viewers watching from the Canada Aviation and Space Museum, Parliament Hill, and LeBreton Flats, a chance to appreciate one hundred years of service, dedication, and professionalism by Canada’s Air Force.

In addition to planes like the legendary Spitfire fighter, Lancaster bomber and distinctive yellow training aircraft of the Second World War, examples of future RCAF fleets like the PC-21, part of RCAF Future Aircrew Training, the F-35 Lightning II fighter (courtesy of the Vermont Air National Guard), and the P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft (courtesy of the United States Navy) were also included in the display.

“Today’s flypast by the Royal Canadian Air Force, in honour of its centennial, is a fantastic way to celebrate Canada Day in our nation’s capital. The RCAF has defended Canadians and their interests at home and abroad for a century – and this flypast is a fantastic way to recognize the pride, dedication, and professionalism of the hundreds of thousands who have served in the RCAF throughout its history. I thank RCAF members past and present for their exemplary service to Canada. To our Air Force personnel, veterans, and all Canadians: happy Canada Day!” The Honourable Bill Blair , Minister of National Defence
“The Royal Canadian Air Force is proud to conduct this flypast featuring historic, current, and future aircraft on Canada Day of this, its Centennial year. The flypast is a recognition of the importance of Canada’s Air Force and the operations it conducts 24/7 , at home and around the world protecting and supporting Canadians and their allies. We remember all those who came before us and we rededicate ourselves to upholding the very best standards and values set out for us as we grow our Air Force for the challenges of today and the future.” Lieutenant-General Eric Kenny , Commander, Royal Canadian Air Force
“This flypast is a chance to connect Canadians to their Air Force as it celebrates and commemorates 100 years of service to Canada. Having historic aircraft in the parade reminds us of how far we have come as an institution and reminds serving members of the great legacy they uphold as they conduct missions in Canada and around the world. The future aircraft speaks to modernization and innovation that the RCAF is undertaking for the next century of service. Finally, we hope this will be a great moment of pride and reflection for current and past members of Canada’s Air Force.” Colonel Maggie Jacula, Chairperson , Royal Canadian Air Force Centennial Committee

Quick facts

The flypast was the largest by the RCAF in 20 years and involved 49 aircraft . Aircraft movements were carefully planned months in advance and coordinated with aircrew, air traffic control, NAV Canada , Transport Canada, Heritage Canada, civilian operators of historic aircraft, and members of the Vermont Air National Guard and United States Navy.

Aircraft flew no lower than 500 feet above the highest obstacle on route during the flypast.

The flypast represented most fleets and all capabilities of Canada’s air force, including training, maritime aviation, tactical transport, strategic transport and air-to-air refueling, tactical helicopter, search and rescue, and combat/ NORAD missions.

The RCAF is made up of approximately 15,000 members coast to coast, flying over 350 aircraft . It is also responsible for Canadian Forces Station Alert, the most northerly, permanently inhabited location on Earth. It conducts round-the-clock operations all over the world and at home, including support to NORAD and continental defence and protects Canadians by providing air and marine Search and Rescue aircraft and maritime patrol.

Canada’s Air Force had humble beginnings in Borden, Ontario in April 1924 , beginning with just under 400 members . By 1944 it grew to the world’s fourth largest Air Force with 215,000 members . Today, two serving RCAF officers are amongst Canada’s astronaut corps and the Air Force is embarking on its most comprehensive modernization program since the Second World War.

The RCAF Centennial has featured many initiatives for 2024, including tribute hockey jerseys worn by the Winnipeg Jets paying homage to the 1948 RCAF Flyers Olympic hockey team, the RCAF Run at locations across the country, as well as a collection of coins from the Royal Canadian Mint, and feature displays at Ottawa’s Winterlude and Tulip Festival. Canadians across the country can take part in RCAF Centennial activities by checking out upcoming events in their area at Events - RCAF2024ARC and by sharing their images online using #RCAF100.
