Compliance status

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation.

  • Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
  • Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.

Due to these historic sites, St. Augustine Walking Tours was born. It provides a variety of specialty historic tours that bring this ancient city to life. Guests are taken down the historic downtown district, with local haunts, mouthwatering restaurants, and quaint pubs.

There are numerous tours for different age groups, with a range of prices depending on the type of tour or number of people. If you are looking for fun things to do in the city, going on St. Augustine Walking Tours is one of them.

Let’s explore some of the best St. Augustine walking tours.

We went on the historic walking tour with Kyle today and had a great time. The spot where we met up with the group was easy to find, with convenient parking and bathroom access. Kyle knows a lot about the area and shared a ton of interesting information so I never felt bored or was tempted to wander. He provided great tips and suggestions for places to eat or do more sightseeing. The tour lasted almost two hours! It was a long walk, out in the sun so you should bring a water bottle and hat. This wouldn't be a good activity for anyone who has mobility issues, but it was great for us. We all enjoyed ourselves and would recommend this tour to anyone wanting to explore St. Augustine.

Photo of AC M.

Amazing tour today with Kyle. His wealth of knowledge & in-depth explanation of St. Augustine History is phenomenal. His professionalism and good sense of humor keep us going & made it more memorable. Thank you!!!

Photo of Jay T.

Sarah did a great job! We had a wonderful time in our group of 5. We learned a lot of history on our tour and we had an excellent group as well. Such fun and highly recommended!

Photo of Elisha D.

This was such a great experience. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and made sure we were taken care of. I would highly recommend this to all of my friends.

Photo of Gina M.

We were looking for an enjoyable evening with drinks, history & enjoying St Augustine. Amelia was so knowledgeable & tailored the tour to our interests. Appreciated the history instead of just stories. Great evening!

Photo of Lietty S.

It was fun but I wouldn't do it again. I was looking forward to drinking, ad it is a pub crawl, but the scavenger hunt forced us to literally run around. My recommendation, make the tour longer. Also, it was advertised that we'd get a free drink and that never happened. Also advertised was discounted drinks at the stops, also never happened.

Hi, Lietty. Thanks for your review of the Pub Crawl Scavenger Hunt. We're glad that you had a great time. Our Paranormal Pub Crawl does include a welcome drink, but not the Scavenger Hunt. Prizes are awarded on this tour instead. As we tell everyone at the start of the tour, some of the stops will include a discount but many will already be on their "happy hour" pricing that is passed on to you. This is totally up to each bar and we have no control over what they charge you. The price for drinks is not included in the scavenger hunt pricing. We will take into consideration your idea for a longer hunt. Thank you for your suggestion. Hope that you have a great day. Cheers!

Amelia was fun and knowledgable. We had so much fun learning the history while doing a pub crawl. What better way to visit St Augustine?

Photo of Zelda P.

Always a good way to get a feel for a place and see what the local food is. Had a wonderful time with our guide Amelia who has a great sense of humor. Food, beer and dessert with history and laughs along the way, can't go wrong !

So yesterday 4 of my girlfriends and I did the tour and we were celebrating two birthdays as well. We live here locally, (myself for 25 years), and it was so fun to go downtown (we live at the beach) and try new restaurants we have never been to. At the beginning of the tour, Jeanne, owner of the GIFTED CORK was very informative and we were able to sample several wines. After the tour we went back and purchased a lot of divine wines. Our tour guide was Sarah, who talked along the tour and told us fascinating facts on the history of our beautiful historic city. We went to the The Tea and Spice Exchange that Colleen and Bob own and purchased several items as well. We went to 4 different restaurants to sample their food and ended up having dessert at the last stop.We all had an amazing day off and a really fun experience and we highly recommend this tour to locals as well as tourists!!!! Florida stories: a walking tour of st. augustine.

St Augustine Bridge of Lions

With all of St. Augustine's history, it’s easy to overlook the concentration of Victorian-era homes southwest of the Bridge of Lions, pictured here, and the Cathedral Basilica.

-St. Augustine

Tom Scherberger

Want to explore the cultural, historical, and architectural treasures of St. Augustine, Fla.? There’s an app for that.

Just go to Florida Stories Walking Tours , and download the app created by the Florida Humanities Council .

With this app you can learn, at your own pace and on your own schedule, what some of Florida’s most unique towns and cities have to offer.

Here’s an overview of what you can experience via the St. Augustine app:

Where: Lincolnville, St. Augustine Number of stops : 10 Total time : 90 minutes Author : Susan Parker, Ph.D., Executive Director, St. Augustine Historical Society Start : Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Center

Founded in 1565 by Spanish explorers, St. Augustine is the oldest continuously occupied European-established city in the United States.

With all that history, it’s easy to overlook the concentration of Victorian-era homes southwest of the Bridge of Lions and the Cathedral Basilica .

Lincolnville , formed by freed slaves after the Civil War, was a thriving middle-class community of black property owners during the Jim Crow era of segregation in the early 20th Century and became a hotbed of the Civil Rights Movement.

You can check out other aspects of St. Augustine through Florida Stories Walking Tours: Colonial period, the Gilded Age and the area South of the Plaza.

The tour starts at the former Excelsior High School, now the Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Center , many of whose alumni became leaders of the local Civil Rights movement.

St. Benedict the Moor School is where three Sisters of St. Joseph were arrested in 1916 for violating a state law forbidding white people from teaching blacks, even though they had had been doing it for a half-century after arriving in the city from France to teach newly freed black children.

Lincolnville Public Library was established in the 1940s after a black child was prevented from borrowing a book at the St. Augustine Free Public Library, and became a training center for Civil Rights protesters.

The modest, red-brick St. Paul’s AME Church is where Martin Luther King Jr. spoke in May 1964 before a Civil Rights march.

Notable Characters

Martin Luther King Jr., Ralph Abernathy, Hosea Williams and Andrew Young Jr. all came to St. Augustine to participate in Civil Rights demonstrations.

Things to Do

St. Augustine is more than 450 years old but it is no time capsule.

Visitors quickly discover why this city of 14,000 people has been named one of the most livable in the U.S.: its historic downtown features cozy cafes, bars and shops along narrow, cobblestone streets.

No history buff should miss the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument , the oldest masonry fort in the continental U.S. located on the western shore of Matanzas Bay.

The Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine , completed in 1797, is the oldest Christian congregation in the United States and the oldest church building in Florida.

For a small city, St. Augustine abounds with great restaurants. For fresh seafood in a casual setting, check out Catch 27 . A little off the beaten path, the Ice Plant is known for hand-crafted cocktails as well as farm-fresh dining.

CHURCHES OF ST. AUGUSTINE’S HISTORIC DISTRICT: A WALKING TOUR

April 6, 2020 By Howard Kramer Leave a Comment

Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine

Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine

The city of St. Augustine in Florida was the site of the first permanent European settlement in what is now the United States.  Founded in 1565, it predates the earliest settlements of the English and Dutch in America by almost half a century.  Not surprisingly, St. Augustine is home to some very old and very historic churches.  From America’s first Catholic parish in the 16 th century to one of the great Protestant masterpieces of the industrial era in the 19 th century, St. Augustine boasts a wealth of religious architecture.  And the best part is that most of these are located along an easily walkable circuit of less than three miles.

Perhaps the best place to start any walking tour of St. Augustine’s churches would be the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine (38 Cathedral Place).  Home to the oldest Catholic parish in the United States, several earlier churches stood on the site before the current cathedral was completed in 1797.  The building was declared a minor basilica by the Roman Catholic Church in 1976.

Just opposite the cathedral across the Plaza de la Constitution is Trinity Parish Church (215 St. George Street), the oldest non-Catholic church building in Florida.  An Episcopal institution founded shortly after Florida became an American territory, the church was completed in 1834.  Two blocks further south from Trinity Parish is the stately Motherhouse of the Sisters of St. Joseph (241 St. George Street), a convent established here just after the American Civil War.

Walking to the south and east, trekkers pass Trinity Methodist Church (82 Bridge Street) and St. Mary’s Baptist Church (69 Washington Street) before arriving at a cluster of historic African American churches: the First Baptist Church (89 S. Francis Street) and the St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church (85 Martin Luther King Avenue).

But the most historic and famous church in the neighborhood is St. Benedict the Moor Church (86 Martin Luther King Avenue).  This Catholic Church is closely associated with the St. Benedict the Moor Mission and School, which were established with the assistance of Katherine Drexel in the late 19 th century.  The church, completed in 1911, is still in operation.

A seven block walk north on Martin Luther King Avenue and Markland Place goes past the First United Methodist Church (118 King Street) before arriving at one of Florida’s greatest architectural treasures, Memorial Presbyterian Church (32 Sevilla Street).  Memorial Presbyterian is, simply put, stunning.  Constructed by oil tycoon Henry Flagler in the late 19 th century, this church was one of the most expensive Protestant buildings of its day.  It is routinely ranked as one of the most beautiful churches in the United States.

A block north is the Ancient City Baptist Church (27 Sevilla Street).  Another late 19 th century church, this one was constructed on land donated by the aforementioned Henry Flagler.  A block to the east is yet another building donated by Flagler, Grace United Methodist Church (8 Carrera Street).  All of these churches were meant to serve the guests of Flagler’s spectacular resort, the Ponce de Leon Hotel, which is now part of Flagler College.

A few minutes walk to the east brings visitors back to St. George Street a few blocks north of the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine, and one final religious site: the St. Photios Greek Orthodox National Shrine (41 St. George Street).  Located in an 18 th century house which had been used by one of the first Greek communities in the United States, the building was acquired and repurposed as an Orthodox shrine in the 1960s.

Traveler’s Note – At the time of this writing, virtually all churches are closed to the public due to the Coronavirus epidemic.  Please check ahead before visiting.

2) Discover The Oldest Wooden School House

If you’ve ever wondered what it was like for students centuries ago during the Spanish period in Florida, then you must take a trip to the Oldest Wooden School House in St Augustine. Also found on George Street, this home was built for the Genoply family and is a one-room, one-story wooden house where children took lessons centuries ago.

This is a must-see location in St Augustine’s historic district because it’s night and day in comparison to the modern schoolhouse. It’s made entirely of wood, and the kitchen and restrooms are built separately from the main house.

Tour the home to see original school supplies, textbooks, and items left behind by the family. Check out the outdoor kitchen, and see the productive pecan tree that’s flourished on the property for 250 years!

3) See The Oldest Masonry Fort In The Nation

If it’s military history you’re after, then you must see the Castillo de San Marcos while visiting historic St Augustine. There’s something to explore for every history fan in this location. There are musket and cannon demonstrations every weekend, rangers and volunteers in period garb, and thematic programs to teach you about the fort’s military history.

All volunteers and rangers are happy to answer your questions or tell you tales from the Castillo de San Marcos and surrounding historic sites in St Augustine and will take pictures with you to commemorate your visit to this national historic landmark.

4) Explore The Historic Flagler College

Your tour starts in the rotunda where you can begin to explore the courtyard as a tour guide tells you about the Spanish Renaissance architecture and the techniques used to build this stunning structure.

Throughout the tour, you’ll experience the true extravagance of this magnificent college, where original hotel furnishings, art installations, and impressive artifacts can be found around the property.

5) Relax In The Plaza De La Constitucion

Although the Plaza de la Constitucion was once used as a commercial and slave market near King Street, this is one of the most relaxing historic sites in St Augustine due to its proximity to the Matanzas Bay and the approach of the Bridge of the Lions in historic downtown.

Sit back and relax as you watch the hustle and bustle of other tourists and take in the smells of the city’s restaurants and specialty shops to help you relax on a busy day of exploring the St Augustine historic district.

6) Stroll The Oldest Street In The Country

As you visit the St Augustine historic sites in the area, you have to make a stop at Aviles Street, also known as the oldest street in the country.

Enter the street under a bold stone archway and meander through the area where you will experience one of the most interesting places in Augustine’s historic district.

7) Visit The Narrowest Street

Treasury Street is the only seven-foot-wide street. It connects to Bay Street on the waterfront, which was once the Royal Spanish Treasury. It was made so that pirates could not drive a carriage and horses down the alley to steal gold from the treasury.

Now, it’s one of the best places in the historic district for a photo op while on vacation with family and friends.
