One of the most dramatic and mysterious sections on the Napali Coast is Honopu, which consists of two pristine white-sand beaches, backed by steep 1,200’ cliffs and separated by the famous 90’ Honopu Arch. The name Honopu means “conch shell” in Hawaiian, because of the sound the northerly winds make when they blow through the arch.

Because it’s extremely difficult and dangerous to access, most visitors to Hawaii will never step foot on the beach at Honopu. Boats and even kayaks are not permitted to land on the beach, so anyone wanting to go has to literally swim there, which is quite dangerous given the strong rip currents and pounding surf.

This is just as well since Honopu is most definitely sacred.

Archeological evidence discovered in the 1920s suggests that a human population flourished in this valley but then disappeared suddenly, which is why Honopu is sometimes called the Valley of the Lost Tribe. It’s also rumored in some circles that Honopu Valley was the last home of Kauai’s fabled Menuhune tribe of little people.

Legends aside, we know for certain that the Honopu cliffs were used as burial sites for ancient chiefs that ruled along the Napali Coast. See, Hawaiians believed that their chiefs were direct descendants of gods and that their bones contained powerful amounts of the gods’ mana or life force. It was imperative to bury a chief’s remains in a secret location because it was believed that the mana contained within could be used against the tribe if discovered by the wrong people. Thus, when a chief died, a capable warrior was designated for the honorable yet fatal task of burying his bones. Yes, honorable yet fatal . The warrior would climb hundreds of feet up the steep cliffs, a search for a suitable cave in which to carefully place the chief’s remains. When the warrior was satisfied with the placement of the remains, he’d jump to his death, thus securing the location’s secrecy forever.

It’s said that, to this day, the bones of these warriors can be found in the sand dunes, underneath the cliffs, after being exposed to heavy rains or winds.

Despite the regulations the Department of Land and Natural Resources enforces to limit visitors and respect Honopu’s sacred history, they’ve made several exceptions for Hollywood. Movie scenes have been filmed at Honopu for the 1976 remake of King Kong , Six Days Seven Nights, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides , Raiders of the Lost Ark , Honeymoon in Vegas and Jurassic Park 3.

Add Honopu Beach, on Kauai’s Na Pali Coast, to the list of the world’s most beautiful and most dramatic beaches. The remote beach features a 90-foot natural arch in the middle that is large enough to fly a helicopter through. In fact, that’s what happened in the 1976 movie Acapulco Gold.

When Hollywood needs a dramatic, exotic, tropical beach, they often head to Honopu. Movies filmed at Honopu include the 1976 remake of King Kong, Six Days, Seven Nights, Pirates of the Caribbean ‘On Stranger Tides’ and Honeymoon in Vegas.

The massive arch separates the beach into two coves, each framed by steep sea cliffs. On one side a waterfall flows onto the beach from Honopu Valley. Sand dunes can be found on both sides!

The name Honopu means “conch shell” in Hawaiian because of the conch-like sound the arch makes in high winds. Another name for the beach is Cathedral Beach because of its spectacular, soaring appearance. Honopu Valley has been called the Valley of the Lost Tribe as it was the last rumored refuge of the Menehune on Kauai.

Honopu Beach is as hard to get to as it is dramatic. The beach can easily be seen from a distance on Na Pali Coast boat and helicopter tours. But setting foot on Honopu is not so easy, as boat, kayak, helicopter and other assisted landings are not permitted and there is no land access due to the steep cliffs. The only way to get to Honopu is by swimming, either from Kalalau Beach or from a boat. Swimming on Kauai’s Na Pali Coast can be treacherous, with huge waves and rip currents. Only the strongest, most ocean-hardened swimmers should attempt a swim to Honopu, with fins highly recommended. In summer months, it may be possible to walk at least part of the way from Kalalau Beach to Honopu on exposed rocks and sand. Honopu is by far the most difficult beach to reach on the island of Kauai.

The restrictions on beach landings are due to the beaches and valley being sacred in Hawaiian culture. The area is a place of ancient temples and burial grounds for Hawaiian royalty.

THE PERFECT DAY AT Honopu Beach

The breathtaking Na Pali Coast can be visited all year round, but we recommend going during the dry season which is from April to November. Rain may make it difficult to access certain areas along the coast and trails, and the ocean is calmer during the dry season. If you plan on swimming to Honopu beach from the neighboring beaches, it is only possible during the summer months, at low tide and before the winds pick up. Alternatively, you can swim from a cruise boat with the help and guidance of the captain, but you must be an experienced ocean swimmer.

After our catamaran tour departs Port Allen, located in the Hanapape Bay on the southwest side of Kauai, we head north along the west coast of Kauai, towards the Napali Coast. Napali, meaning the cliffs or many cliffs, consists of 16 miles of dramatic coastline, vivid sea cliffs with over 4,000-foot steep drop-offs, emerald-green valleys, sea caves, and waterfalls. These cliffs were created millions of years ago when Kauai was formed and have since been shaped by years of withstanding the elements.

Hawaiians enjoyed an isolated life in the valleys of Napali for hundreds, perhaps thousands of years. Much evidence of their life is still found today. Artifacts have been recovered that are hundreds of years old, ancient heiau, or sites of worship, have been uncovered, and terracing is still present in many areas. It is estimated that life along the Napali began to change in the 1800s and early 1900s, as foreigners began frequenting the islands and introducing new ways of living. Native Hawaiians began abandoning their culture and simple lifestyle and eventually moved to more populated communities on Kauai to take advantage of emerging opportunities.

What You’ll See on Our Napali Coast Tour

This first prominent cliff we will encounter on our Napali Coast tour is the Makaha ridge and valley. This cliff is easily distinguished, as it hosts radar and tracking equipment and cellular phone sites you can see from a distance. One of the first prominent beaches is Milolii, about four miles northeast of Polihale Beach, and the westernmost and driest valley of the Napali Coast State Park. This was once a thriving fishing village featuring a stream near many heiau and shrines still found throughout the valley. This beach is only accessible by the sea and camping is allowed with a permit.

Nualolo cliff and valley are spotted next; another fishing village thrived here due to an excellent coral reef system fronting the beach. A visible “X” slashed into the high part of the cliff helps you easily recognize Nualolo. There are many myths surrounding this unique scar, but it is mostly credited to the volcano goddess, Pele, leaving her volcanic signature. Remnants of Hawaiian life can still be found in this area, including a rope ladder that connected the beach to the valley. In the valley, ancient burial and home sites have been uncovered, including tools, and artifacts, and evidence of a sophisticated terrace and agriculture network proves that this was once a popular community.

The next valley and cliff are known as Awaawapuhi, it is a great valley with a stream at the bottom. Sometimes you can make out a trail at the top, this is accessible from Kokee State Park and a vigorous hike will get you to an overlook of Awaawapuhi and another trail that connects to the Nualolo trail and cliff.

We point out the most famous sea cave along the way, the Open Ceiling Cave. The sea caves along Napali were mostly created by erosion, the constant waves have chiseled away at the porous lava rock. It is said this cave once had a weak roof structure that eventually collapsed, creating a skylight effect into the cave. This unique landmark often has brown boobies perched above the entrance.

Honopu beach and valley have been made famous by several feature films. A dramatic arch in the cliff connects two white-sand beaches, with a waterfall nearby. Movies like King Kong, Jurassic Park, Six Days and Seven Nights , as well as Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End all feature this beautiful backdrop.

The next valley, Kalalau, is probably the most famous and photographed valley of the Napali Coast. The valley and beach of Kalalau boast many hikers all year round; the Kalalau trail starts at Kee beach, and winds over eleven strenuous miles to Kalalau Beach. Freshwater is abundant with a stream and waterfall nearby, and the wide valley has excellent conditions for farming with terracing still in place from ancient days. When Napali was inhabited, it is estimated that a large population of two to four thousand Hawaiians may have lived in Kalalau at any given time. The cliffs directly behind Kalalau beach are known as the cathedral cliffs, for the cathedral-like spires jutting towards the heavens. You can see Kalalau from the top of the valley from the Kalalau Lookout point located in Kokee State Park.

After viewing all the famous sites of Napali, the captain points the boat west toward the Forbidden Island of Niihau . The channel between Kauai and Niihau is very deep and offers the best opportunity to see an abundance of sea life that resides in these Hawaiian waters.

Honopu: Star of the Silver Screen

While touring the Na Pali Coast with us, some locations may seem familiar, as if you have seen it before. If you come with us and feel that deja vú, it is probably because you have seen it, in Hollywood movies.

The natural beauty of Kauai and unique landscapes on this island make it a prime spot for filming. With the rugged scenery, waterfalls, beaches, and much more, it is easy to see why. But if there was one location that has seen more action than anywhere else, it is probably Honopu.

An Ancient History

Known as “The Valley of the Lost Tribe”, Honopu was once home to hundreds of native Hawaiians who lived in relative isolation from the rest of the island. The steep cliffs (pali) surrounding the valley and beach kept the area protected from outside intruders.

The  mana here is very powerful, and many people in this area feel an eerie presence when they are here; as if they are being watched by spirit guardians.

The Archway

The most famous and most photographed spot on Honopu is most likely the giant archway. From the water, this arch looks modest in size, but that is only when compared to the massive landscape that surrounds it. For when you actually put it in perspective, the archway is hundreds of feet long and big enough for a helicopter to fly through it. In fact, this is exactly what happened in the James Bond movie  The Man With the Golden Gun.

Other Movies

Many other movies have been filmed here. Probably the most recognizable ones are  Six Days, Seven Nights ,  Pirates of the Carribean,  King Kong,  and  Jurassic World.  After coming out on a tour it can be fun to watch these movies, even if you have seen them before, but this time with a bit of reference to point out the locations made out to be everywhere but Kauai.

Honopu Beach, also known as Cathedral Beach, is a remote and stunning beach located on Kauai’s Na Pali Coast. The beach is renowned for its remarkable Honopu Arch, a large 90-foot natural arch that divides the beach into two sections. Backed by towering sea cliffs, the beach is inaccessible by land. Boats and kayaks are prohibited from landing on the beach, leaving swimming to the beach as the only viable option. Though stepping foot on Honopu Beach is a real challenge, the beach is a highlight of Kauai helicopter tours and Na Pali Coast boat tours . The name Honopu means “conch shell” in Hawaiian, because of the sound winds make when they blow through the arch.

Honopu Beach, and Honopu Valley behind the beach, hold significant historical, cultural and spiritual importance for Hawaiians. Several ancient temples and burial grounds are located in the valley, and the area is steeped in Hawaiian legends and myths. The valley is sometimes referred to as The Valley of the Lost Tribe because it was said to be the last known refuge of the mysterious Menehune people.

To protect Honopu’s cultural significance, and to preserve its pristine natural environment, restrictions have been put into place on visiting the beach. With boat and kayak landings prohibited, along with overnight stays, visiting the beach is problematic. Visitors can either swim from the adjacent Kalalau Beach, about a quarter mile away, or from a specially chartered boat. (There are no tour boats that offer swimming to Honopu Beach.) This swim can be difficult and potentially hazardous due to strong currents and waves, so it is recommended only for expert swimmers with proper safety precautions and preparations. The area can also be seen from above via a hike on the difficult Honopu Ridge Trail (now closed) in Kokee State Park.

Honopu Beach’s stunning scenery and dramatic landscape have made it a popular filming location for several movies. Among the notable films shot at Honopu Beach is the 1976 remake of King Kong and the romantic adventure Six Days, Seven Nights starring Harrison Ford and Anne Heche.

Honopu Valley

Honopu is one of the most amazing sights you will see along the Napali Coast. Honopu means ‘Conch Shell’ and consists of two beaches that are connected by the Arch which stands 90 feet tall and is 124 feet wide. It is the largest natural arch in Hawaii and has been featured in several different movies. Some of the most popular movies that have been filmed at the arch are King Kong, Pirates of the Carabbean: On Stranger Tides, 6 Days and 7 Nights, and Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark. 

Honopu Valley is said to be the burial ground for the Hawaiian Ali’i (Royality) and for that reason is the most remote and secluded beach along the coast. The only legal way to access the beach is to swim to shore because boat landings are not permitted and there are no trails at lead to the beach. Camping is also forbidden due to the spiritual and burial grounds. Legend has it that warriors were chosen from birth to carry the deceased chefs to their burial site in the cliffs and then have to die themselves, as to keep the burial site a secret. 

It is truly amazing to see the beach, the arch, and not to mention the cliffs that rise up to 1200 feet!

It doesn't get anymore secluded and remote than Honopu Beach on Kauai's Na Pali Coast . No road or even a hiking trail leads to it. In fact, the only legal way to access it is to swim to it.

Honopu actually consists of two beaches, which are backed by majestic 1200-foot (365 m) high sea cliffs and separated by the Honopu arch. Around the corner is a large waterfall, cascading down the sea cliff, through the arch and into the ocean.

Honopu means "conch shell" in Hawaiian. It got this name because of the conch shell-like sound that the arch makes when northerly winds blow into the valley. Another nickname of Honopu is Cathedral Beach.

Trying to reach Honopu Beach is an adventure that is certainly not for everyone. Since swimming to the beach is necessary to set foot on it, one must be a very strong swimmer to reach it (and wear fins). When the surf is up, it is dangerous to enter the ocean along the Na Pali Coast because of strong rip currents and pounding surf.

Also, currents can be present even if the ocean appears calm. Keep in mind that the currents usually flow in the same direction, so if you swim over to Honopu and it was easy, it may not be as easy on the way back if the current comes from that direction (which you may not have noticed on your way there). During summer when the ocean is calm, some people walk from Kalalau Beach on the exposed rocks and sand along the cliffs to Honopu Beach for most of the way.

Since Honopu Valley is so isolated, it is believed to be spiritual. Many Hawaiian myths and legends tell of this area, and it is also a place of ancient burial grounds for local chiefs.

Best Way to Explore The Napali Coast in Kauai | Hike, Boat or Helicopter?

The Napali Coast is one of the main attractions of Kauai and undoubtedly one of the most iconic places in all of the Hawaiian Islands. 

The absolutely breathtaking lush jagged cliffs that line the coastal north shore is a sight sure not to be missed when visiting Kauai. But it is no easy task to get there, as vehicles have no access to the Na Pali coastline. Luckily there are other ways to experience the beautiful Napali Coast via air, foot, or water. 

The easiest, yet most expensive way to experience the Na Pali Coast is by air on a helicopter tour. This takes you on a stunning adventure experiencing an aerial view of the whole island of Kauai. 

If you enjoy getting on the water, then seeing the Napali Coast by boat tour can offer a unique way to cruise along the coastline. But if you easily get sea sick, this might not be the best option.

One of the more challenging ways to experience the Napali Coast is by foot. The most famous trail along the North Coast is the Kalalau Trail. But there are also trails in Kokee State Park and Waimea Canyon State Park that offer stunning views of the coastal shore from above.

Hiking along the coast offers more of an immersive way to experience the Napali Coast. If you want to get a closer view of the lush valleys, hiking the Napali Coast is clearly one of the best options.

Lastly, kayaking is also a unique option to explore the Napali Coast. This is probably one of the most challenging options and requires advanced planning. I’d only choose this option if you have experience sea kayaking. 

Technically, there are 5 unique ways to experience the Nāpali Coast State Wilderness Park. In this guide we will break down the best way to explore the Napali Coast.

What is the Napali Coast & what makes it famous?

The Napali Coast is famously known for the high cliffs that rise over 4,000 feet from the Pacific Ocean. Due to the amount of rain the Na Pali Coast experiences, the landscape is very green and lush. 

The Nāpali Coast State Wilderness Park spans 6,175 acres and extends 16 miles between Polihale State Park Beach and Ke’e Beach in Haena State Park.

The most famous landmark to visit in the Nāpali Coast State Wilderness Park is Kalalau Beach. The only way to set foot on Kalalau Beach is by hiking through the Kalalau Valley, kayaking from either Polihale State Park or Ke’e beach, or setting up a boat drop off (not a common option/more info about this below). 

Most of the boat tours and helicopter tours just cruise by the beach and you get to experience the views for less than 10 total minutes. 

Napali Coast Weather

The weather on the Napali Coast plays a huge factor in why it is so lush and green. On average the north shore of Kauai gets about 40-60 inches of rain per year. 

It is very common for it to rain somewhere along the Napali Coast sometime during the day/night. 

Which can make it a challenge for knowing when to book a tour. But most tours have a good cancellation policy or will cancel/reschedule the tour if it won’t be a good experience for the customer. 

Best Time To Visit The Napali Coast

The summer months are the best time to visit the Napali Coast (May-September). The weather will be more cooperative and you will experience less rain. 

As stated above, rain is a very common occurrence in the Napali Coast State Park. So chances of cloud cover or getting rained on are much higher than on the south and west sides of the island. 

During the winter months, the island experiences the most rain. But rain can occur any day of the year. Luckily they are often isolated showers, rather than a full day of rain and clouds.

The winter months also bring bigger waves to the north shore of Kauai. Boat tours will be most pleasant during the spring, summer, or fall. And kayaking permits for Kalalau Beach are only available in the summer.

Lastly, swimming at Kalalau Beach is potentially more dangerous in the winter.

Temperatures don’t fluctuate too much along the Napali Coast, therefore it can really be explored any time of year. 

Hiking/Backpacking the Napali Coast:

There are actually quite a few ways to experience the Napali Coast by foot. But one of the most famous trails is the Kalalau Trail. The trail starts on Kauai’s north shore at Haena State Park. This trail requires permits and advanced planning.

The hike to Kalalau Beach is a challenging 11-mile hike (one way) that takes a minimum the majority of a day. But many people take at least 3 days to explore this beautiful area as a backpacking trip. Once you reach the beach, there is a beautiful waterfall and large sea caves to explore. 

A popular day hike on the Kalalau Trail is a hike to Hanakapi’ai Beach and/or Hanakapi’ai Falls. The hike to Hanakapi’ai Beach is only 4 miles roundtrip. From the beach, you can extend the trip to Hanakapi’ai Falls an additional 4 miles, making the total trip 8 miles roundtrip. You will need a day-use permit for entering Haena State Park.

Or (with the correct permit) you can continue on the Kalalau Trail to Kalalau Beach as an extended backpacking trip. This trail is not for the faint of heart as it stretches 11 miles one way on rugged terrain. Plus the hiking trail climbs over 6,000 ft in elevation through the up and downs of the valleys. If you are looking to experience the Na Pali Coast with an easier hike or viewpoint, you should consider heading to Kokee State Park.

Hiking & Viewpoints in Kokee State Park To See the Na Pali Coast

Kalalau Lookout and Puʻu o Kila lookout are two viewpoints at the end of the road of Kokee State Park that offer a bird’s eye view of the Napali Coast without much effort. It is a great way to view the majestic Na Pali Coast if you want an easier, less time-consuming option.

Pu’u o Kila Lookout also is the start of the trailhead for the Pihea Vista Trail. Which is 2.3 miles with 465 ft elevation change. This trail is often very muddy and messy but you get to see the stunning jagged mountains of the Nāpali Coast.

Other hikes in Kokee State Park that offer beautiful views of the coast line are Awa’awapuhi, Honopu Ridge Trail, and Kālepa Ridge.

Awa’awapuhi trail is 6 miles with 1,945ft elevation change. The beginning of the hike can be a challenge, especially after recent rainfall, but undoubtedly one of the best hikes in the park. There is a section where you will be in the middle with steep slopes on each side, so be sure to take your time and be extra cautious. 

Honopu Ridge Trail is a trail less traveled, so you can expect an overgrown trail. It is 4.4 miles with 1597 ft elevation change. Long sleeve shirts and pants are strongly encouraged. Also, this trail is not suggested after heavy rainfall as it will be very slippery and dangerous. 

Kālepa Ridge is the easiest of the 3 and offers stunning views. The hike trail is 1.9 miles with 610 ft elevation change. 

Helicopter Tours of the Napali Coast:

The best way to experience the island of Kauai as a whole is by helicopter. A helicopter ride is exhilarating and incredibly scenic. You get to see many remote waterfalls, mountains, and valleys that can only be seen via helicopter. Plus you only travel in small groups or by private tour.

But since the helicopter tours are only about an hour long, you really only get to see the Napali Coast for a short time. So while the views are incredible, you only spend about 10-15 minutes passing the NaPali Coast. 

There are both ‘doors-on’ and ‘doors-off’ helicopter tours. Doors-on tours tend to be less expensive and climate controlled. But photos and videos suffer from the glare on the windows.

A big reason to choose doors-off helicopter tour is for photography.

But they are pretty strict on what you can bring on a doors-off helicopter tour. So while it might seem great for snapping photos, you might experience precipitation and have trouble wiping it off since you aren’t allowed loose items. And it might not be climate controlled. But you will get pictures without glare, which can be a huge bonus for epic photos.

Jake and I used Island Helicopters for our tour around the island of Kauai. It is one of the cheapest helicopter tours on the island. We don’t have a comparison between other helicopter tours, but we had an exceptional time from checking in, pre-flight tutorial, and the ride itself. 

We had a great experience, the only thing we wish was different is the pilot to have a little more enthusiasm. But nonetheless, an absolutely amazing experience to see the lush green mountains, Waimea Canyon and the Napali Coast from above. 

The company we went with didn’t offer a ‘ doors-off’ ride. But you can find many Helicopter tours of the Napali Coast that offer a doors-off experience.

Tips for Helicopter Tours in Kauai:

If you are riding in a doors-on helicopter, then it is best to wear all black or dark colors. Lighter colors reflect off the glass, and you might not be able to snap a photo without getting a bright glare from your clothes reflecting off the window in the shot. 

If you are primarily going for photography, you might consider doing an off-doors helicopter tour. Or consider doing a specific photography tour which many companies offer. A photography helicopter tour will sometimes hoover over popular locations to get that perfect shot.

Another bit of caution for photography, is that many people get motion sickness when taking photos or videos. Try to limit the amount of time spent looking through your camera’s viewfinder or at your phone screen.

And if you often get motion sickness, plan ahead and pick up some medicine before your ride. Suggested medicines consist of: diphenhydramine (Benadryl), dimenhydrinate (Dramamine), and scopolamine.

Whether or not you get motion sickness, it’s still best to not drink alcohol the night before. Or at least keep it to 1 or 2 drinks total. 

Jake and I don’t tend to get motion sickness much, but we did experience nausea toward the end of our flight.

Airplane Tour of the Na Pali Coast:

If helicopters scare you or the price is too steep, then you can still witness the island of Kauai by airplane tour. The biggest negative to an airplane is that they can’t fly lower than 1000 to 1500 ft. 

So ultimately, you can’t get very close to the cliffs, and you won’t really be able to see some of the waterfalls which is part of the whole experience. 

Helicopters can fly as low as 500 ft, so the experience is much more immersive. Plus some helicopter tours stop off at Jurassic Falls if that is of interest (which is impossible for airplanes to land at).

Boat Tours of the Napali Coast:

Boat Tours are the ultimate way to experience the Napali Coast. Most tours last half a day (roughly 4 hours). Most companies offer both morning tours and afternoon tours.

Plus many of the tours add in a snorkel tour if that is of interest. There is so much beautiful marine life that lines the coastal shore and they know the best snorkeling spots. If you choose a morning tour, you have more of a chance to see Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles.

And if snorkeling isn’t your thing, it’s very popular to see Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins and Humpback Whales on your ride from one of the ports to the Napali Coast. Plus you will pass by an ancient Hawaiian fishing village where ancient Hawaiians once lived. 

We found the boat tour to be one of our favorite ways to explore the Napali Coast. However, boat tours in the summer are better because the ocean is calmer. Boat tours are more likely to be canceled/rescheduled due to waves in the winter

We took a boat tour in November, and the ocean was extremely rough, even for the big boat we were on. I think most passengers were experiencing some motion sickness. And Jake even threw up overboard at one point!

Boat tours leave from two different ports. In the west, boat tours will leave from Port Allen. In the north, boat tours will leave from Hanalei Bay.

The best way to see the numerous sea caves that line the Napali Coast is via boat tour. Many of the tours will drive you very close or even through some of the sea caves depending on the calmness of the sea. 

Jake and I used Makana Charters which offers a larger boat and is one of the least expensive options. We loved our guides, as they were very personable and knowledgeable. Our captain kept reminding us to take in the nature for ourselves rather than snapping photos or videos through our phone. But of course, we still wanted to remember this trip, so we still snapped many photos and videos!

Other popular boat tours are Napali Pirates and Holo Holo Charters.

Kayaking the Napali Coast: 

Kayaking the Napali Coast is a unique way to explore the Napali Coast. It is highly recommended to have experience kayaking on the ocean. Especially for taking off and coming into the beach with big waves crashing ashore. 

First, you need to apply for a permit . They only allow kayakers to approach the beach during the summer months from May 15 to Sept 7. Popular take off points are from Polihale Beach in the West and Haena Beach in the East.

Once kayakers are on the water, they can only land at Kalalau Beach and Miloli’i Beach. Landing at Hanakapi’ai, Honopu, and Nu’alolo Kai is prohibited. 

There are also full-day kayaking tours with a guide. So if you don’t want to camp at the beach or don’t want to tackle the route on your own, you can go with a guided tour.

Some companies that offer this are Napali Kayak and Kayak Kauai .

Boat Drop off at Kalalau Beach:

Commercial boat transport is illegal on Kalalau Beach. Therefore, the only way to get a boat drop off on Kalalau Beach is by a private unpaid charter. You basically need to know somebody in Kauai with a boat.

So it’s pretty uncommon to use this method to get to the beach, rather a way for locals to get to and from the area if they own a boat or know someone who owns a boat. 

You will still need a valid camping permit to land at Kalalau Beach if you arrive by boat.

Takeaway | Best Way to explore the Napali Coast 

Honestly, we loved every chance we got to experience the Nā Pali Coast. Each adventure offered a different perspective and was unique in its own way. 

Our first time witnessing the Napali Coast was the long 22-mile slog on the Kalalau Trail. We worked hard for our views and we loved that we actually got to spend some time on Kalalau Beach.

We actually got to experience more intimate views of the landscape because of the 11-mile hike through the lush valleys. But we don’t suggest this for anyone that isn’t an experienced hiker, because it is very challenging. 

Second, we went up in the air on our first-ever helicopter ride. It was probably the coolest way to see Kauai Island as a whole. But it was over in just 55 minutes, so you really don’t get to experience more than 10 minutes along the Napali Coast.

We personally feel that everyone should at least do the helicopter experience once if they are in Kauai. It is truly worth the price. 

Lastly, we went on a boat tour. From witnessing the Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins and the state parks from the water was extra special. Because we went during the winter months, the waves were much bigger than we thought, but a fun time nonetheless. 

But getting to take in the view of the Napali Coast from the water for about 30ish minutes was magical.

Overall, it’s hard to pick the best way to explore the Napali Coast as they are all great in their own way. But I think a helicopter tour is a must-do when visiting Kauai. 

If you are going strictly to experience the views of the Napali Coast, then a boat tour in the summer might offer the best experience. Especially because tours last 4 hours versus a helicopter being around 1 hour.

But truly, you can’t go wrong, as long as you at least explore the Napali Coast by hike, boat, or helicopter.

Honopu valley and arch.

Honopu Arch is one of the most amazing sights you will see along the Napali Coast. Honopu consists of two beaches that are connected by the Arch which stands 90 feet tall and is 124 feet wide. It is the largest natural arch in Hawaii and has been featured in several different movies. Some of the most popular movies that have been filmed at the arch are King Kong, Pirates of the Carabbean: On Stranger Tides, 6 Days and 7 Nights, and Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Honopu Valley is said to be the burial ground for the Hawaiian Ali’i (Royality) and for that reason is the most remote and secluded beach along the coast. The only legal way to access the beach is to swim to shore because boat landings are not permitted and there are no trails at lead to the beach. It is truly amazing to see the beach, the arch, and not to mention the cliffs that rise up to 1200 feet!

Na Pali Coast Beaches: The Best

If you’re looking for a breathtaking beach experience, look no further than the Na Pali Coast. With its clear turquoise waters and dramatic red cliffs, this area is a paradise for beachgoers. There are many excellent beaches in the area, but we’ve put together a list of our favorites to help make your decision easier!

Many of the Na Pali Coast beaches are hard to access or can be completely inaccessible at times. Always monitor local reports for the condition of different trails and beaches. During extremely rainy periods, certain places could be inaccessible.

Kee beach is well protected by a reef on the outer edges, making it ideal for snorkeling and swimming during the calmer summer months. During the winter months, the surf is much higher and pretty dangerous, so it’s best to avoid swimming during this time.

If you’re interested in viewing an amazing sunset this is a great destination for that as well.

This beach also marks the beginning of the Na Pali Coast and the famous Kalalau Trail.

Honopu Beach

This is one of the more secluded and remote beaches that Kauai offers. The only way to legally access this beach is by swimming to it! Disclaimer: The swim to Honopu Beach should only be attempted by extremely confident & strong swimmers who are familiar with the currents and ocean conditions of Kauai. It can be deadly if you are unprepared or if conditions are rough.

It is home to the famous Honopu Arch with amazing waterfalls and cliffs surrounding it. For most people, this beach is best seen from a distance.

Nualolo Kai

This is another unique beach rich in Hawaiian culture and history. It is only accessible by boat, and the boat owners have to have permits to land or take people here. Luckily, we at Kauai Sea Tours are one of the very few companies with the ability to take you to this amazing beach !

Kalalau Beach

Just like most beaches that lie on the Na Pali Coast, Kalalau beach is also hard to access. The trail sits at the end of the famed Kalalau Trail , the 11-mile adventure leads you directly here. If you decide to embark on the Kalalau Trail, this beach is definitely worth the hike.

You can even camp on this beautiful beach, but a permit is required so try to plan ahead if this is something you’re interested in. The beach lacks the protective reef that many swimming beaches have, but swimming is still possible if you use caution. We do not recommend going out and swimming during the winter months.

Overall a great destination and well worth a hike if you have the camping permit.

Milolii Beach

Another remote beach only accessible by boat, it’s a great camping beach when you manage to get a permit. During the summer months around mid-May to early-September dry landings are allowed without a permit.

Hiking back into the Milolii Valley greets you with steep canyons and a variety of waterfalls if it has been a wet season. You can even see an ancient Hawaiian temple near the stream – be careful to not disturb any of the rocks here or at any other archaeological sites.

Honopu Beach - A Mysterious Paradise on the North Shore of Kauai, Hawaii

The only legal way to access this beach is to swim to it from an offshore boat or from neighboring Kalalau Beach which is only possible when the surf is low. During high surf, rip tides and crashing ocean waves can be dangerous even to experienced swimmers. Walking from Kalalau Beach is not an easier option as it entails climbing sea cliffs and walking on jagged rock ledges.

Once reached, the beauty of Honopu Beach is unmatched by any other Hawaiian beach. It actually consists of two coves with fine white sand, both backed by majestic 1200-foot (365 m) high sea cliffs and separated by the Honopu Arch. There is also a large waterfall, cascading down the sea cliff, through the arch, and into the ocean.

The name Honopu, which means "conch shell" in Hawaiian, was in reference to the conch shell-like sound produced when northerly winds blow into the arch. Because of its isolation, the beach is almost always deserted.

The mysteries and legends attributed to the valley make the beach all the more interesting to adventure seekers. During the ancient times, the bones of local chiefs were carried by warriors and placed hundreds of feet up in unmarked caves on the cliffs of Honopu Valley. After securing the bones in a safe and secret location, the warriors jump to their deaths as the ultimate sacrifice to keep the remains, which are believed to contain powerful "mana" or spiritual life force, safe from the hands of the wrong people. Otherwise, the bones can be used against the entire tribe if discovered by the enemies.

The Honopu Valley is also known as the home of the Menehune, small mythological creatures which are known for their superb craftsmanship. Numerous ancient Hawaiian engineering marvels such as heiau (temples), fishponds, roads, and other structures were attributed to the Menehune.
