Other Important Documents and Things You Need to Carry

india to london road trip cost

  • It is mandatory for you to carry  Motor Insurance for each country that you will be crossing through between India and the UK.
  • Special Overland Permits , that should be approved by both the state and the government, are needed in order to cross through Myanmar and China. While the former process may take about a month, the latter will take over 3 months; so make sure you apply accordingly.
  • When driving to Myanmar, one also needs to have a government-approved Escort vehicle as well as a local Burmese guide and a liaison officer assigned by the Ministry of Myanmar Tourism with them during their entire time in the country. A tourist guide approved by the Chinese government is also mandatory during your entire journey in China.
  • The Central Asian countries such as Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan require some assistance when crossing the borders and special invitation letters are also mandatory for these countries. Thus, you need to ensure that you apply for these documents in advance. There is also a possibility that you may come across some corrupted custom police officers so you need to research and be prepared to handle them just in case.
  • You must also take some additional documents such as your vehicle’s Original Registration Certificate, Motor Insurance, Pollution Certificate, Global Travel Insurance so that you have some cover in case you come across some perilous situations such as kidnapping, accidents, adverse weather conditions, etc.
  • Given the fact that this trip will most likely take you over a month at the very least, you will have to carry some extra cash with you. Now, it is common knowledge that US dollars are universally accepted currency so make sure you carry some small USD notes so that you can use them on the way.
  • Also, if you are on some medication , do not forget to carry it with you; in fact, take enough that it lasts you for the whole month or at least a couple of weeks so that you don’t fall short on them when you are crossing by remote terrains.

A Few Pointers for Your Motor Vehicle

  • If your vehicle has a good ground clearance and is well-serviced (such that it does not break down in the middle of anywhere), then you should not have a problem. The only catch is that the vehicle should be registered under one of the people undertaking this journey. It is also said that people who use rented cars may have some problems during the entirety of the trip.
  • Since you will be crossing through the remote areas of Central Asia, China, and Russia where you will probably face some difficulty in getting your car tank filled with petrol, it will be a good idea to carry at the minimum 20-litre jerry can of spare fuel.
  • Another important aspect that you need to pay attention to is spare parts so that even if your vehicle does face some problem in the middle of nowhere, you are able to change that part and carry on with your journey. These should include the basic tool kit and vehicle parts such as a couple of spare tyres, Fan Belt, Alternator, Extra battery, Bulbs, Air Pump, Wipers, Puncture Repair Kit, etc. Vehicle parts that you think are unique to your vehicle should also be carried so that you are prepared if you don’t end up finding that specific part in the country that you are crossing by.
  •  Also, make sure you hire a reliable vehicle shipping agent in advance so that your vehicle can be shipped back to India as soon as you reach London. The vehicle shipments from the UK to India usually take over a month so it is better if you schedule accordingly.

How Much It Cost for a Road Trip to London From India?

By Robert Palmer

If you are planning a road trip from India to London, it’s important to first calculate the cost involved. While a road trip can be an exciting adventure, it’s essential to plan ahead and budget accordingly to ensure a smooth and stress-free journey.

Calculating the Cost of Your Road Trip

The cost of a road trip from India to London can vary depending on several factors such as the route you take, mode of transportation, accommodation, food, and visa expenses. Here’s a breakdown of some of the costs involved:

Transportation Costs

The most significant expense for your road trip will be transportation costs. If you plan on driving your own vehicle from India to London, you need to factor in fuel expenses, toll charges, and maintenance costs. You can also consider renting a car or hiring a driver if you don’t want to drive yourself.

If you don’t want to drive at all, another option is taking public transportation such as buses or trains. You can also fly from India to London if you prefer air travel.

Accommodation Costs

The next biggest expense will be accommodation. You need to account for lodging expenses for each night that you are on the road. Depending on your budget and preferences, there are various options available such as hotels, hostels, camping sites or staying with friends or family.

Food is another expense that needs to be factored into your road trip budget. Depending on your food preferences and eating habits, this can vary greatly. If you plan on cooking your meals during the trip or eating at restaurants along the way will make a big difference in your overall food expenses.

Visa Expenses

If you’re an Indian citizen planning a road trip through Europe including UK (London), then getting Schengen visa is mandatory which includes UK visa as well.

The Total Cost of Your Road Trip

The total cost of your road trip to London from India will depend on the above factors and how much you’re willing to spend. Here’s an estimate of the costs involved for a 30-day road trip:

  • Transportation costs: INR 1,50,000
  • Accommodation costs: INR 60,000
  • Food costs: INR 40,000
  • Visa expenses: INR 12,000

A road trip from India to London can be an unforgettable experience, but it’s important to plan ahead and budget accordingly. By considering all of the above factors, you can get a rough idea of how much your trip will cost and make sure you have enough funds for an enjoyable journey.

Delhi to London (by road) in 70 days

Adventures Overlandare will soon open bookings for a Delhi to London bus tour, May 2021.

Between the mid-1950s and late 1970s, Hippie Trail was a hit. Groups of people used to pack their bags and travel from Europe to Asia in buses. Now, Gurugram-based travel company Adventures Overland that offers road trips and cross border drives across six continents, is working to replicate that idea with their ‘Bus to London’. This first-ever hop-on/hop-off bus service between India and London will cut through 18 countries, covering 20,000 km in 70 days.

“We tried and tested this route in 2017, 18 and 19, with a 50-day journey from Delhi to London in customers’ self-driven cars. At that time, we got requests from people wanting to travel in leisure. So, we thought of a bus,” says Co-Founder, Sanjay Madan.

Sanjay Madan and Tushar Agarwal

A 45-seater bus will be converted into a 20-seater bus with business class seats. The number of buses and journeys will depend on the number of bookings. The ceremonial flagging off will be done from India Gate in Delhi in May 2021, but the actual journey will commence from Imphal as the road route will proceed from Myanmar.

“We will take charge of documentation, paperwork, visas, and permits to ensure that the participants get to completely focus on experiencing the journey. An experienced English speaking local guide will travel with the group to ensure smooth communication,” adds Co-Founder Tushar Agarwal, 39.

Madan and Agarwal met in 2011 when the two had registered their names in the Limca Book of Records. While Madan had become the first Indian to drive to the world’s highest motorable road at Khardung La (5,602 m) in a Tata Nano (626 cc), Agarwal was the first Indian to drive from London to India.

“Since both of us were on the same page, we got together and formed this company in 2012. In 2013, we did several trips, and we went on to make 14 Limca Book Records together,” says Madan. Till date, the duo has taken passionate road trippers to more than 70 countries around the world. And with the Bus to London, they hope add another record.Out of 70 days, 45 days are chalked out for travel and the rest for sightseeing and stay.

Madan, 44, says, “For instance, we will go to France by bus and from there, then cover a distance of 100km out of the total distance of 20,000km in a ferry. The total cost of the one-way trip amounts to `15 lakh per person.”

The duo has not started taking bookings yet. “We are waiting for the new travel guidelines post COVID. The plan is to have one bus but we can make it two buses also, one after the other,” informs Agarwal and Madan adds, “When we start taking bookings, submitting a COVID-19 negative report will be made compulsory.”

Like every other travel firm, the pandemic has impacted their business. “Our last trip was the Winter Drive to Russia in February. After that till now there has been no trip. But, we wanted to do this bus trip, and the lockdown gave us the time to plan it. We are also planning domestic trips to Rajasthan in December. Let’s see how things change by then,” adds a hopeful Agarwal.

On its return journey from London, the bus will be renamed ‘Bus to India’, and participants have the option to join for the entire duration or one or more legs.

Delhi to London by bus: 70-day trip crosses 18 countries and tickets cost Dh74,000

The first stage of the 20,000-kilometre journey is set to depart india for the uk in may 2021.

Hayley Skirka author image

The first hop-on, hop-off bus service from India to England is set to depart Delhi in May 2021.

Travel company Adventures Overland is calling the trip the "longest bus journey in the world" and is offering 20 people the chance to travel from Delhi to London by luxury coach.

The driving expedition specialist announced details of its Bus to London odyssey that will cover more than 20,000 kilometres across 18 countries over 70 days.

Like many things this year, the journey's start date may be postponed further, but owners Sanjay Madan and Tushar Agarwal are keen to push ahead with their ambitious road trip.

"The last few months have altered life for all of us, and the Covid-19 pandemic will continue for a while. Keeping this in mind, we will only start accepting bookings once there is clarity with respect to travel regulations, both locally and internationally," explains Adventures Overland's  website.

When the trip does get going, it looks set to be epic. The bus will depart from Delhi and drive across India before journeying into South-East Asia through Myanmar, Thailand and Laos. It will then head to China and Central Asia, before finishing up in Europe.

Tickets for the road trip cost Dh73,510 per person – although the company says costs could vary closer to the departure date.

Only 20 passengers can book the entire trip, but there are options for anyone keen to join for one or two stages of the cross-country overland journey.

Travellers will be riding in comfort on a converted luxury coach, and will have access to free Wi-Fi and an entertainment system, as well as adjustable business-class seats with plenty legroom. Most nights will be spent at four or five-star hotels, with selected destinations having boutique accommodation.

Journey across 18 countries

The road trip will take in 18 countries, including the Czech Republic, where travellers will get to explore Prague. Unsplash

After Laos the bus will continue on to China. Travellers will then spend 16 days journeying through the sprawling country with planned stops including meeting pandas in Chengdu, walking the Great Wall, visiting the Mogao Caves and driving through the Gobi Desert.

Food is a big part of travel and Adventures Overland will organise meals at local restaurants and cafes in each location, and will provide English-speaking guides to share historical facts and interesting information about each destination.

From China, the bus will trundle along the well-trodden route of the Silk Road, crossing into Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. The expedition will then head into Russia, with planned visits to Astrakhan, Volga and Moscow, as well as a day cruise on the Caspian Sea.

The final stage of the journey will take in Europe, starting in the Baltic countries of Latvia and Lithuania, and continuing on to Poland. Travellers will visit the Czech capital of Prague, and Frankfurt in Germany, then drive towards Belgium.

After 68 days on the road, passengers will arrive in London with two days reserved for sightseeing in the UK's capital.

What’s included?

Included in the cost of the trip are all hotel stays, guides and fees related to visas, immigration, sightseeing and movement permits. Planned meals and daily snacks and drinks are also included in the cost, but additional sustenance costs  extra.

Sightseeing costs are included in the fare, with trips to places like the Great Wall of China on the itinerary. Unsplash

Adventures Overland's owners could set a new world record with the trip, but it won't be their first. The pair are already Guinness World Record holders, having made the longest journey in a foreign country when they travelled 17,107km across Australia in 2013.

London calling

This won't be the first time that Adventures Overland has driven from India to the UK. The company has hosted self-driving expeditions  for which people have come together to embark on mass road trips from Delhi to London. However, it's the first time the company will organise the journey by coach. The return leg will set off from England back to India in August 2021.

Although the trip looks set to be the first overland bus journey to travel from Delhi to London, it cannot claim the record for being the first tourist bus to travel from India to the UK. That title belongs to the Indiaman bus, which travelled from London to Kolkata and back again in 1957. It had 20 passengers and round-trip fares reportedly cost only £65 (Dh312) per person.

ET NOW spoke to the founder of Adventures Overland Tushar Agarwal on this epic journey and what inspired him to start this service? "We have been organising road trips around the world for the last 8 years. In 2010, I drove from London to Delhi and in 2013-14, Sanjay Madan and I drove around the world covering 90000 km in 50 countries on a journey known as great Indian world trip. This journey also created a Guinness World Record.", said (name) adding this is where the idea was conceived.

He further added that they have been organising such trips since 2017 which comprised of 27 people, "In 2017, we organised the first road trip from India to London via 18 countries known as 'Road To London'. As part of this journey, we took a convoy of 13 cars and 27 people from all over India to UK. The same trip was repeated in 2018 and 2019 also. while doing these trips, people approached us with a desire to do an overland journey from India to UK but without driving. Hence, we came up with the idea of launching a 'Bus To London' for those who are keen on doing overland journeys but don't wish to drive themselves."

When we quizzed him about why London specifically and not any other country in the world, Adventures Overland co-founder Tushar Agarwal said that India and UK share a long history and going to London by road sounds like a larger-than-life journey which sounds impossible to do by road.

You Can Take the World's Longest Bus Ride from Delhi to London Next Year

The 70-day trek travels through 18 countries across Asia and Europe

india to london road trip cost

With flying taking a spot on the back burner this year, it’s no wonder we’ve seen a boom in overland travel, from road trips in RVs to cross-country train rides . But the most impressive land-based journey we’ve stumbled upon is a brand new 12,500-mile bus route between Delhi to London.

Operated by Adventures Overland , a tour company based in Gurugram, India, the Bus to London expedition will depart from Delhi in May and travel through 18 countries over 70 days en route to its final destination: London. The journey will be leisurely, taking a meandering route that brings passengers to the temples of Southeast Asia, the Great Wall of China, the Silk Road Central Asia, and thriving metropolises across Europe, too. In August, it’ll follow the same route in reverse.

The journey is a nod back to the middle of the 20th century when bus routes from Europe to Asia were somewhat common. “Before it all began, and India gained the attention of the Western tourist seeking a slice of ‘oriental mysticism,’ there were two kinds of overland travelers on these routes—those who took organized bus tours like Indiaman, Albert, Silver Express, etc., and then there was the Hippie Trail,” writes Adventures Overland in a brochure for the trip. “Hordes of young men and women packed themselves in ‘magic buses’ and traveled overland from Europe to Asia, in search of ‘enlightenment.’”

The Bus to London journey, however, is a luxury experience—the entire trip will cost $20,000, though it does include hotel stays, meals (sans alcoholic beverages), visa fees, guided tours, and some entrance fees to sights and attractions, not to mention transportation via a coach bus with business-class-style seats, personal entertainment systems, WiFi, and USB ports for charging.

If you’re looking to book the full journey in either direction, there are only 20 seats available, though there are extra seats available for each of the trip’s four segments, which range from 12 to 21 nights and can be booked independently.

Adventures Overland has long been in the business of driving journeys, and it has operated the Delhi to London route since 2017—but only in self-driving caravans. The Bus to London experience will be the company’s first tour in a coach.

Travel Cost Calculator

Quick links, trip pricing calculator.

Travelmath provides an online cost calculator to help you determine the cost of driving between cities. You can use this data to figure out a budget for a road trip. The driving calculation is based on the average fuel efficiency of your vehicle, and you can change the gas mileage in mpg or L/100 km to match your exact make and model. Gas prices are automatically estimated based on current fluctuations, and again you can adjust these to fit your local gas station prices. Both U.S. and international units are available to make the calculations easier to use, and the output is given for both one-way and round trip travel routes.

Check the driving distance for your planned route, and see if the total driving time requires an overnight stay. If it's a long trip, you may want to research some hotels along the way . Or compare whether it's better to fly or drive to your destination.

17 Countries, 97 Days, 3 Mothers Travelled From Delhi To London by Road

Do you find driving from Delhi to Gurgaon everyday worthy of a pat on your back? Well, you do. But three women pushed the bar pretty damn high. Rashmi Kapoor, Dr. Saumya Goyal and Nidhi Tiwari share more than just a bond of friendship. With one driver (Nidhi herself), a jeep by Mahindra First Choice (no back up vehicle) and determined spirit, these mid-30 year old mothers pushed through 600 kms everyday and completed the journey of a lifetime by travelling from Delhi to London by road.

How they travelled from Delhi to London by road

The journey of 21,477 km, 17 countries and 92 days started in June and came a full circle in December. As they ventured across countries, the three musketeers spread awareness about women empowerment.

Nidhi took to the wheels as already specialises in outdoor education, off-the-road jeeping, long-distance and high-altitude driving. She proposed the idea of going Delhi to London by road to her friends and they jumped at the opportunity.

Their jeep in fact become the first Indian vehicle to cross the Arctic Circle.

Putting their resourcefulness to use, Women Without Boundaries approached a few big guns to sponsor their trip making Delhi to London by road possible. With around 30 lacs in budget, their travel was happily sponsored by big guns such as The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Ministry of External Affairs, India, Mahindra First Choice Wheels, Lenovo India and Via.com

Unlike driving from Delhi to Gurgaon their only trouble was not a horrendous traffic jam, but forces of nature and society. Rashmi recalls how they were stuck in Imphal for 3 hours due to collapsed bridges in heavy landslide. But like many travellers who explore the goodness of humanity through their travels, Women Without Borders experienced the same.

"When we were stuck due to a landslide in Manipur , the locals offered to help us. We trusted them and stayed with their families and also got to taste home-cooked Manipuri food. The trip reinforced my faith in human goodness."

With constant support from friends, family and Indian government, they have an important message to share.

"We wanted to tell the women of the world that such expeditions are possible and that there was nothing to be scared of."

Riding from India to London through the Silk Route, on a motorbike

The ambitious journey will traverse 21 countries and three continents in 85 days, on a route specially designed for an all-women biker group from surat.

Kumar Shah is a motorcycle enthusiast who realised his dream of riding across the world at 52, despite three heart attacks. A newspaper proprietor and editor of Vadodara Samachar, a daily newspaper in Vadodara, he rode from Vadodara, Gujarat to London, United Kingdom on his 1994-make Royal Enfield in 2013. Shah has been an active part of the motorsports community in India, organising blind car rallies and motorcross events in his hometown since the 1980s. He is an award-winning golfer, and spends his free time coaching a university football team—he was the goalkeeper of the same team in college. He launched Ride Your Dreams a year ago to design and curate extraordinary journeys for biking enthusiasts. In May 2019, he has set off on the maiden journey to London with motorcycles and a back-up car in tow. Follow this blog for live updates of the journey.

The dream was to do a bike journey halfway across the world – once. It was a dream that I had been harbouring since 1983, when I was only a 22-year-old college student. So in 2013, when I began riding my 1994-make Enfield, from Vadodara, Gujarat to London, United Kingdom, it was a culmination of a desire of 30 years and the euphoria of the journey was unparalleled. I knew then that this was just the beginning.

On May 30, 2019, I set off for the journey again; only this time, I‘m taking the Biking Queens of Surat on a specially designed route, across 21 countries and three continents.

In 2013, when I got home after being on the road for 76 days and riding across 14 countries, sure, I was expecting attention from the press. The small-town press has always been focused on the endeavours of its people. What I wasn’t expecting was emails and phone calls and unexpected visits from travel and biking enthusiasts from every corner of the country, seeking help to design similar, inspiring journeys for them. My Facebook profile was flooded with friend requests and my phone wouldn’t stop ringing.I’m sure I’m not the only one who thought of a journey like this. Many tried. In the 1980s, a few of my friends tried to go through Pakistan, but returned in a few days because their papers were not in order. Charting out your route through 19,000 km, through countries that aren’t the obvious choices for tourists, isn’t a walk in the park. Then there’s the gargantuan task of getting visas for various countries without flight tickets. Insurance, visas for vehicles, explaining to every stunned visa officer that you’re indeed going on a motorcycle--the sheer logistics and planning involved in an expedition of this magnitude is enough to dissuade most enthusiasts.

The Silk Odyssey 2.0 route passes through 21 countries, including Kyrgystan, Russia and Lithuania. Currently, the group is passing through China.

It took me many months to finalise my Silk Odyssey, taking the ancient silk route that was used to trade mainly silk and spices through China, India and many countries. The Silk Road got its name in 1877 by a German geographer. I tried the easy way out-–I spoke to travel planners and experts but at the end of the day, all of them gave up. It can’t be done, I was told. It’s too difficult; it’s a mad man’s plan, they said. That’s when I spoke to the people who have been a part of the madness. I spoke to bikers around the world and got a sense of the expedition I was about to undertake. But none of them had taken the route I had planned, so I was left to fend for myself.

Eighteen months later, I had my route planned down to the towns I will be halting at, the ones that have inns and gas stations, the prices of fuel in each city, village or town across 14 countries. It was the sheer might of the 30-year-old unfulfilled dream that drove me. The unanswered part was getting a vehicle insurance and the cost involved. I only learned of it once I set out. Formalities at various borders was a challenge too. Some border crossings would be smooth while some could take up to six hours. Language was going to be a challenge as many countries do not speak English at all. I learnt about police harassment on some routes and ways to address them. Acquiring a Carnet De Passage was expensive. It allows a temporary import of your vehicle into other countries for a fee and deposit, with an assurance to bring the vehicle back to the country, else pay the export duties.

Planning and executing such a huge expedition takes a lot of understanding about the regulations of the countries I had to go through. Endless logistics had to be worked out. I searched for Indians who would have ventured out but found none. I only got a note from a friend’s friend, that, in the early sixties, some police officers had ventured to London from India, but other than that, got no more information. I searched for more details through my network but unfortunately could not locate a single member of that expedition. I became a member of various international motorcyclist forums and motorcyclists riding around the world.

This brought clarity to some of my queries. Even then, there were a few loose ends. I finally found my answers from riders coming to India from various countries. I met up with a few and invited a couple to stay with me. Finally, all my questions regarding logistics were answered from the horse’s mouth. It was only after this that I set out on my motorcycle tour to London.

After returning, I realised that the lack of adequate information is a problem that every traveller faces. Soon, many people came to me to plan the details of their trips. This is when I decided to design road journeys for others using my experience, and make them a blue print. It was a laborious task and I was later shocked to learn that none of the nine clients I had, had ventured out. The blue print remained in their closets, because of an underlying fear of venturing out on their own. This gave birth to ‘Ride Your Dreams’ and I am now going to conduct my first great tour under it, the India-UK Motorcycle Tour 2019. This tour is specifically designed for an all-women riding group called ‘Biking Queens’, Surat.

The India-UK Motorcycle Tour 2019 kicked off on June 6 from Varanasi, and will conclude in London on August 25. The route goes through 21 countries and three continents in 85 days. The entire group consists of three motorcycle riders on KTM 390 cc and two members, a mechanic and a photographer in the back up vehicle, ISUZU D-max, which I will be driving.

Stay tuned for dispatches from the road, as we travel through fascinating Silk Route countries along the way.

Want to travel to India without leaving London? I went on the perfect walking tour for you

Rushing through London, it’s easy to take the capital’s great variety for granted.

But even if I wasn’t on a walking tour that’s just paused, Shri Sanatan Mandir Hindu temple on Ealing Road would have stopped me in my tracks.

It glows with self-possession in the November sunlight; 9,700 square metres of Gujarati carved limestone. While we’re gazing up at the temple, our guide Vaishali Patel is watching us with delight.

“I love seeing everyone’s eyes light up when they see the temple,” she tells me afterwards. “And the look of their faces eating paan.” (We’ll get to that).

Vaishali designed her ‘Immersive Indian Community Tour of North London’ following training from Women in Travel, a UK-based social enterprise that connects women from diverse, underserved communities with fulfilling jobs in tourism. Another graduate of their tour guiding academy is sharing the Ethiopian flavours of Shepherds Bush, on tours available through Intrepid Travel.

For other Londoners, these tours offer an authentic way to appreciate the multiculturalism of home. And a sustainable way to get a taste of another country without the cost and air miles.

  • This European capital has been crowned the best city destination in the world
  • Pickpocketing on the London tube: Theft soars by 83% with popular tourist destinations key targets

What does the Indian tour of London involve?

Ealing Road is a well-known commercial street among London’s Indian population, and the obvious choice for an immersive tour.

“This street has it all. It’s very sensory, you can smell incense sticks, the food, see the colours of the clothes, the fake gold,” says Vaishali, who grew up in neighbouring Harrow. Her parents are from the west Indian state of Gujarat , and as a child would take her to Ealing Road to shop for vegetables. “Everything here is catered for the Indian Gujarati lifestyle,” she says.

London is huge, and it takes me around an hour to arrive at Alperton on the Piccadilly Line from my area of North London. It beats the roughly 8 hours it would take to fly to Ahmedabad, while still giving a sense of journeying. And, after meeting Vaishali and our small group, the Hindu temple is the perfect place to start.

“I invite you to take part in a meditative journey,” she says before we step inside, activating an attention to detail that makes the rest of the morning so rewarding.

Walking silently around the paths inside the temple - with its 41 statues of deities also carved in Gujarat - I’m struck by how old and grounded it feels for a building completed in 2010. Perhaps some of that weightiness comes from its significance to the community; Vaishali says she is more spiritual than religious, but the temple makes her feel rooted.

She weaves personal experiences and family anecdotes into her cultural narration. Like her mum’s older aunts, who decades ago decided to don the traditional white saris of widows in order to travel India and its temples with greater independence.

What Indian foods can you eat on Ealing Road?

Our next stop is definitely the one that has lingered most with me taste-wise: a paan shop.

This snack, or mouth sweetener, is made using a colourful assortment of ingredients: desiccated coconut, nutmeg, coriander, candied fruit, fennel seeds (giving it a medicinal flavour) and more, all wrapped in a betel leaf. Some varieties include tobacco, and are chewed and spat out - as faint pink marks on the pavement show, despite the shop sign prohibiting this.

Sweet-toothed travellers will be thrilled by a stop at a traditional sweet shop too. My favourite was barfi - a dense hit of sugar and condensed milk - westernised with a layer of chocolate.

A trip to a sari shop is a different kind of treat for the eyes, and a chance to hear more about the life and times of Ealing Road from a lovely, family-run business, who arrived in London in the 1970s from India via Nairobi.

A couple of stops later, and you’ll have rebuilt your appetite for a restaurant lunch of delicious Gujarati street food and mango lassis.

  • Heading back to Paris, London or Rome? Here are some spots you might have missed the first time

A walking tour from a walking tour lover

This immersive experience is made by Vaishali - it simply wouldn’t be the same without her. She’s not only part of the community, but a natural storyteller and travel lover, who says she always takes walking tours when abroad to get off the beaten track.

Amid a 20 year-long career in marketing, a desire to spread her wings has taken her on solo travel adventures all over the world, from Brazil to New Zealand. She loves how expansive it feels, meeting people and gaining self-knowledge; “people reflect back to you parts of you that you didn’t see yourself,” she says.

Vaishali’s passion for solo travel and desire to embolden other women has just led to her publishing a book, ‘Solo Explorers’, born of conversations with 30 other female travellers.

“I had no idea how much other cultures will be interested in something we take for granted,” she says of Ealing Road. “But there’s actually wow moments for other cultures.”

“This is very real. It’s not staged; you’re stepping into the daily lives of shop owners, businesses and people.” The tours take place on Saturday mornings because it gets too busy in the afternoons.

They cost £65 (€76) per person, and can be booked through Women in Travel’s website shop.

A percentage of the proceeds from each tour goes back into supporting the social enterprise’s mission to provide women - many of whom are refugees or survivors of domestic abuse, human trafficking or homelessness - with the opportunity to fulfil their economic and individual potential through employability and entrepreneurship.

The writer was a guest of Women in Travel .

Top 5: these are india's longest us-bound routes.

You’ve reached your account maximum for followed topics.

  • India-US flights are among the longest, with Air India serving most routes.
  • SF to Delhi is the 5th longest route; Mumbai to SF is the 2nd longest.
  • Bangalore to San Francisco has a tech-focused express connecting the two Silicon Valleys.

A number of long-haul flights connect India with the United States. All the top five longest flights are to the West Coast (San Francisco) or New York City (JFK and Newark). Air India serves most of these routes, which carried more than 1 million passengers to the US in 2023 . India is now ranked as the world's most populous country (having just overtaken China), while the United States is the world's third most populous country. These are the top five longest nonstop flights from the US to India, according to Cirium , an aviation analytics company.

5 Delhi to San Francisco

At 7,706 miles, the route from san francisco to delhi is the fifth longest route connecting the us with india.

New Delhi is India's capital and one of the world's largest metropolitan cities (with a metro population of around 33 million, depending on methodology), while the Bay Area has a population of almost 10 million. Air India is the carrier serving this route with nonstop flights. The flight takes 15 hours and 30 minutes. The nonstop flights are operated by Air India rather than IndioGo. Even though IndioGo is a larger airline by passengers carried, it focuses on domestic travel and international destinations limited mostly to India's Asia/Middle East region.

The lack of US-based airline flights to India could be partly explained by Russia. The shortest route to India is over the Arctic Circle and over Russia. The US and other Western nations banned Russian airlines from US and European airspace in response to the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Russia reciprocated and banned US carriers from its airspace. That said, Air Canada, United, and American Airlines offer some nonstop flights to India .

4 Mumbai to John F. Kennedy (NYC)

Air india flies 7,797 miles nonstop from india's financial capital to the busiest airport in the united states for international flights.

Three of the five longest routes from India to the United States are from Mumbai. While New Delhi is the capital of India, Mumbai is considered the financial capital—perhaps comparable to how Washington D.C. and New York City are seen in the US. Mumbai is also the second-largest metropolitan city in India.

As with many cities that changed names, Mumbai International Airport still uses the old " BOM " code from Bombay. It is still common to see Mumbai called Bombay in India, and some residents find the old name somewhat nostalgic. The Mumbai to JFK route is served by Air India with a Boeing 777. The flight time is 17 hours and 25 minutes.

Air India Lounges In Delhi And New York JFK To Get A Makeover

The airline aims to improve the lounge experience of its passengers in India and abroad.

3 Mumbai to Newark Airport (NJ)

Mumbai boasts two of the longest flights to the new york metro area.

Newark Liberty Airport is the other large international airport in the New York tri-state area, located in New Jersey. The flight from Mumbai to Newark covers 7,806 miles and takes 14 hours and 35 minutes. Air India operates the route with a Boeing 777 (Air India has a fleet of Boeing 777-200LRs and 777-300ERs).

The Boeing 777-200LR (long-range) is a rare breed in the skies and was destined for ultra-long hauls . It remains one of the longest-range passenger airliners operating today (although the Airbus A350 XWB Ultra Long Range has a longer range).

2 Mumbai to San Francisco

Mumbai to sfo is the second-longest flight between india and the usa and one of the top twenty longest in the world.

At 8,401 miles, Air India's 16-hour and five-minute-nonstop flight from Mumbai to San Francisco is the second longest connecting the two countries. It is also the 16th longest nonstop flight in the world, a little shorter than the flight from Atlanta (Georgia) to Johannesburg (South Africa) and a little longer than the flights from Los Angeles to Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), Dubai (UAE), and Doha (Qatar).

Mumbai Airport (officially the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport) is the second-busiest airport in India by total and international passenger traffic (after Delhi) and one of the top ten busiest airports in Asia. Air India will likely continue to grow its connections with North America ( it already has over 500 return flights to the US and Canada ).

Summer Demand: Air India Adds More Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner Flights To 3 European Cities

Air India's Amsterdam, Milan, and Copenhagen services are getting a boost this summer.

1 Bangalore to San Francisco

Bangalore to san francisco offers a silicon valley to silicon valley express.

San Francisco (or, more accurately, the Bay Area) is famous for being home to Silicon Valley - home to a large number of cutting-edge startup tech companies. India boasts its own "Silicon Valley" or tech center in Bangalore. The southern Indian city of Bangalore is considered to be the tech capital of India and one of the tech capitals of the world (while Mumbai is India's financial capital).

Once again, nonstop flights are operated by Air India with Boeing 777s. The flight time is 17 hours and 55 minutes, placing it among the longest nonstop flights in the world. Only Singapore Airlines' flight from JFK (NYC) to Singapore has a longer scheduled duration (18 hours and 50 minutes). Other flights like Qatar's Auckland to Doha cover a longer distance but have a shorter scheduled flight time.

Election latest: Farage urged to 'get a grip' of Reform UK amid racism row

John Healey, the shadow defence secretary, has urged Nigel Farage to "get a grip" of Reform UK after a racism row involving the prime minister. It comes as a Reform UK canvasser who used a racial slur against Rishi Sunak called himself a "total fool" and said he has learned his lesson.

Reform UK has withdrawn support from three of its candidates, the party has confirmed.

Nigel Farage's party is no longer backing Edward Oakenfull, Robert Lomas, and Leslie Lilley - who were all previously candidates for Reform.

Mr Oakenfull reportedly penned social media posts about the IQ of sub-Saharan Africans - which he told the BBC were "taken out of context".

Meanwhile, Mr Lomas allegedly said black people should "get off [their] lazy arses" and stop acting "like savages".

Ms Lilley is accused of describing people arriving on small boats as "scum".

The candidates will remain on the ballot paper, but are no longer endorsed by Reform UK.

It comes as Sky News identified two additional Reform UK parliamentary candidates who shared material deemed "vile" and in breach of the internationally-recognised definition of antisemitism.

Our live poll tracker collates the results of opinion surveys carried out by all the main polling organisations - and allows you to see how the political parties are performing in the run-up to the general election.

With under a week to go, the Tories and Labour have taken a drop, while support for Reform UK and the Liberal Democrats is on the rise.

First Minister of Scotland John Swinney has joined criticism of "racist and homophobic comments" allegedly made by Reform UK campaigners.

Despite this, he said they are "not a surprise to me".

Mr Swinney, also the leader of the SNP, said: "I think this is where the politics of Reform ends up and I deplore it. I deprecate it. I want nothing to do with it.

"We will always rail against racist and homophobic comments, and I can't believe that there's a single thing Nigel Farage can do to control a problem that he himself has started."

The SNP leader goes on to claim that this is not a case of bad apples, but "an ingrained problem of Reform".

He says: "Nigel Farage has set this all up. He has stoked it all.

"With every word over all these years, he has incited all that intolerance and prejudice in our society.

"I want to have nothing to do with it.

"And I don't think there's anything Nigel Farage can do to stop it, because he created it."

Reform UK has reported Channel 4 to the elections watchdog for alleged "scandalous... interference" over what the party claims was a fake rant planted by the broadcaster.

Footage from an undercover Channel 4 reporter showed Reform campaigner Andrew Parker using a discriminatory term about the prime minister, as well as saying the army should "just shoot" migrants crossing the Channel.

Police are now assessing the comments to establish if an offence has been committed, while Mr Sunak  said the insult directed at him "hurts and it makes me angry".

Mr Farage, the leader of Reform UK, has since suggested that Channel 4 may have paid an actor to make racist comments about the prime minister, posing as a canvasser for Reform.

In a letter to the Electoral Commission, party secretary and leading barrister Adam Richardson claimed that "Mr Parker is not a property developer as he has alleged but a jobbing actor".

He added it was "entirely evident that Mr Parker was a plant within the Channel 4 news piece".

The letter said: "It is wholly unbelievable that by complete coincidence Channel 4 were performing an undercover investigation and by chance were paired up to go canvassing with a man who was pretending to be someone else, using a false voice and saying almost exclusively racist and bigoted remarks."

Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK, has said he is refusing to appear on Laura Kuenssberg's Sunday morning politics show until the BBC apologise for a "dishonest" audience.

He claimed this audience existed during his appearance on Question Time.

Mr Farage says: "I have just been invited to appear on Laura Kuenssberg.

"I'm refusing until the BBC apologises for their dishonest QT audience.

"Our state broadcaster has behaved like a political actor throughout this election.

"Reform will be campaigning vigorously to abolish the license fee."

Sir Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, has insisted that his party shares "no values with Nigel Farage" in the wake of a new racism row.

It comes after Mr Farage, the leader of Reform UK, suggested that Channel 4 may have paid an actor to make racist comments about the prime minister, posing as a canvasser for Reform.

Sir Ed says: "Liberal Democrats share no values with Mr. Farage. He can sort himself out. My job as a Liberal Democrat leader is to tell you what we're about.

"I want to fight a positive campaign about how we rescue our NHS and make sure we get the investment in health and care. Make sure we sort out the cost of living problems that people are really suffering under, and deal with things like the environmental issues, like sewage.

"You know, and I think people get fed up in this campaign when there's all these diversions and nastiness. They want to know what you're going to do for them.

"And that's what the Liberal Democrats are going to say."

The Archbishop of Canterbury urged people to avoid "personalised abuse" in the closing stages of the election campaign as he encouraged voters to go to the ballot box.

The Most Reverend Justin Welby said: "In these last few days before the election, let us pray for all candidates taking part in this most essential act of democracy.

"Let us encourage courteous and kind debate and not use personalised abuse.

"Let us carefully consider issues and the common good, and above all vote."

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak told former soldiers of his plans for a veterans' bill, if the Tories are re-elected, during a campaign visit in his North Yorkshire constituency.

Mr Sunak drunk tea and munched on a cake at the Ellerton Lakeside Cafe, near Northallerton, as he chatted with about a dozen veterans who had gathered for Armed Forces Day, joking that: "You need a lot of sugar to get through my day."

Listening to the men, he said: "That's why we now have, like they do in the US, we have a dedicated office for veteran's affairs, a minister in the cabinet, funding.

"So, we're at the start of that journey."

He said: "If we're re-elected, we're actually going to have a veteran's bill, we're going to pass our first ever veteran's bill in parliament.

"That will bring together all the things that we need to do - put some things in law that will improve the service that we've providing.

"That hasn't happened before - a flagship veteran's bill that (veterans' minister) Johnny Mercer's been working on which will just continue to improve the support."

Mr Sunak listened as he was told about initiatives to tackle veterans' homelessness, mental health problems and issues facing service families at the nearby Catterick Garrison.

He said: "We want to make sure all of you get the support you are entitled to."

Two Reform UK parliamentary candidates have shared material deemed "vile" and in breach of the internationally-recognised definition of antisemitism.

Candidates of the right-wing party have previously shared on social media material defending Adolf Hitler, denying the Holocaust, conspiracy theories about the Rothschild family and Jewish financier George Soros, denial of antisemitism, and comparisons of the state of Israel with Nazi Germany.

The uncovering of these social media posts, in a dossier compiled by the Campaign Against Antisemitism and verified by Sky News, raises yet further questions about the vetting process undertaken by  Reform UK  ahead of nominating these candidates to stand for parliament.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has threatened to take legal and police action against a vetting firm, Vetting.com, saying it was paid £144,000 to carry out candidate checks but "not a single piece of work was delivered", and alleged political bias.

Today is the final Saturday of the general election campaign, with people across the UK preparing to cast their vote on 4 July.

There's still plenty that could happen between now and Thursday - so now isn't the time to turn away.

It's 12.30pm - here's everything you need to know so far:

  • Party leaders are on the election campaign trail on  Armed Forces Day;
  • Rishi Sunak will later hail the "duty, dedication and selfless personal sacrifice" of servicemen and women and claim his is the only party to meet the Help for Heroes Veterans' Pledge;
  • Meanwhile, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has pledged to introduce a new armed forces commissioner and lead a "government of service" if Labour is elected;
  • However, there is another story holding attention today - a racism row involving a Reform UK canvasser and Rishi Sunak;
  • Footage from an undercover Channel 4 reporter showed Reform campaigner Andrew Parker using a discriminatory term about the prime minister, as well as saying the army should "just shoot" migrants crossing the Channel;
  • The canvasser has called himself a "total fool" and said he has learned his lesson;
  • But John Healey, the shadow defence secretary, has urged Nigel Farage to "get a grip" of Reform UK after a racism row involving the prime minister.
  • Sir Keir Starmer has also commented today, urging Mr Farage to "set the tone" in his party;
  • And Tom Tugendhat , the security minister, has criticised those "in Nigel Farage's company" who have "rather extraordinary and unpleasant views".

Stick with us through the afternoon for the latest news and analysis from the campaign trail.
