‘Iolani Palace is a magnificent mansion that preserves an important part of Hawaiian history.  The Palace is well worth visiting when in  Honolulu , and is one of the main structures to see on the Honolulu Historic District Walk.

‘Iolani Palace was the official residence of the reigning Hawaiian sovereign, King Kamehameha, and the only royal palace in the United States.   The cornerstone was laid on December 31, 1879.  The Hawaiian government at the time had appropriated funds to build the Palace as a way to mark Hawaii’s status as a modern nation.  The building was complete by August 1882, and that original palace was known as Hale Ali’I (House of the Chief), however that was demolished in 1874 to make way for the palace that stands today, which was renamed ‘Iolani Palace.  ‘Iolani means ‘Royal Hawk’ in the Hawaiian language.

Two monarchs governed from the Palace: King Kalakaua and Queen Lili’uokalani, and Kamehameha III, IV and V utilized the palace as their main residence.  The monarchy was overthrown by the U.S. in 1893, was then used as a capitol building, and was finally restored and opened as a public museum in 1978.  Apparently the area was once the site of an ancient heiau (Hawaiian Temple) that was destroyed.

In 1825, a white-washed coral block was constructed as a royal tomb for the remains of Kamehameha II and his wife, Queen Kamamalu.  In subsequent years, many kings of Hawaii were buried at the site, but in 1865 eighteen coffins were removed and transferred to a Royal Mausoleum in Nuuanu Valley.  Today, the royal tomb area is located in the southeast quadrant of the grounds.  With respect for Hawaiian chiefs who may still be buried there, it is marked by a fenced area with ‘kapu’ signs indicating it is a forbidden area.

Also on the Palace Grounds is Iolani Barracks, which looks like a medieval castle, was completed in 1871 and is also a coral block structure that contains an open courtyard which is surrounded by rooms that once housed the royal palace and royal tomb guards, before the overthrow of the Hawaiian Monarchy.  The Barracks were originally located on the grounds that the Hawaii State Capitol Building sits and was moved block by block and reconstructed in 1965 to be where it is now on the Iolani Palace grounds, where it houses the ticket office and the Palace Gift Shop (open Tues-Sat 8.30am-4.30pm).

The first and second floors of 'Iolani Palace have been meticulously restored and house the stunning Throne Room, Grand Hall, The State Dining Room, the Blue Room, as well as the private suites of the King and Queen.  Portraits of Hawaiian Royalty line the walls.  Lush crimson and gold décor fill the Throne Room and beautifully carved doors featuring Hawaiian woods abound.

Iolani Palace

Located in downtown Honolulu, the Iolani Palace is a national historic landmark and was once the royal residence of the rulers of Hawaii. The Iolani Palace was the official residence of King Kalakaua and his sister, Queen Liliuokalani the last reigning queen on the Hawaiian Monarchy. Experience Hawaiian royalty with a trip by yourself or an Iolani Palace tour .

Built in 1882, Iolani palace was heavily influenced by European architectural styles, and was the first royal residence in Hawaii to have electric lights, indoor plumbing, and telephones. Later when Hawaii was made the 50th state, it was used as the capitol building.

Today the Iolani Palace is open to the public. Both professional guided tours and self-guided audio tours are available to the palace Tuesdays through Saturdays. About half of the original furnishings have been restored to the Iolani Palace to give it the authentic look of its royal heyday.

The Iolani Palace is also available as a venue for private events like weddings and special occasions.

Other nearby landmarks in Honolulu include the King Kamehameha Statue, Hawaii State Art Museum, Kawaiahao Church, Punchbowl Crater, Honolulu Chinatown, and Honolulu Academy of Arts.

Tips for Going to the Iolani Palace

  • Self-guided audio tours of the first and second floors take about 45 minutes and are available in English, French, Spanish, German, Hawaiian, Mandarin, Japanese, and Korean.
  • A shorter tour alternative of Basement Gallery Exhibit is available and lasts around 30 minutes.
  • Selfie sticks, tripods, flash photography, and video cameras are not allowed inside the Iolani Palace.

Iolani Palace (Oahu)

Published: Jul 5, 2022 · Modified: Jul 14, 2022 by Kathy · This post may contain affiliate links · 2 Comments

Built in 1845, Iolani Palace is the only royal palace in the United States. It was the royal residence for the Hawaiian monarchy until 1893. Today it is a museum that is open to the public. Here's everything you need to know to about visiting Iolani Palace.

Entrance to Iolani Palace.

What Is Iolani Palace?

Iolani Palace is the only royal palace in the US. It is a national historic landmark and a must-visit when you come to Hawaii.

Iolani Palace is located in the heart of Honolulu on the island of Oahu. It is a 15 minute drive from Waikiki and 1 minute from Downtown Honolulu.

The Palace served as the royal residence for the rulers of the Kingdom of Hawaii from 1845 to 1893, starting with Kamehameha III and ending with Queen Liliʻuokalani.

The monarchy was overthrown in 1893 and Iolani Palace was used as the government headquarters for the Provisional Government until 1969.

It was then restored and opened as a museum to the public in 1978.

The Throne Room at Iolani Palace.

Growing up in Hawaii, we toured Iolani Palace as school children. The history of Hawaii is unique and being able to tie what we learned in the classroom to a physical place helped to paint a full picture of Hawaii's royal history.

As an adult, I love taking friends and family who visit. Yes Hawaii is very much sun, sand, and beach. But that showcases just a tiny fraction of Hawaii. A visit to Iolani Palace is one of many things that provide a richer and more complete understanding of our home.

Entrance to Iolani Palace.

Can You Visit Iolani Palace?

Yes. That is the whole point of this post! ^_^

Iolani Palace offers several types of tours ranging from an audio tour to a white glove tour.

We typically book the Docent-Led Tour. It is a 1-hour group tour that gives just the right amount of time and guidance to learn about the history of the Place.

It is a walking tour that covers the two floors of the Palace so you have a chance to walk the grand staircase and see all the different rooms from the dining room to bedrooms.

The Queen's Bedroom at Iolani Palace.

The docents at Iolani Palace are gracious and very knowledgeable, some have been leading tours for many years. Come with questions, they seem to know everything!

This tour is currently $30 per person (there's also a $19.95 *kamaaina rate).

* Kamaaina means local . Many places in Hawaii offer kamaaina discounts and to get the discount you need a local ID card.

Iolani Palace Facts

Here are few interesting facts to get you started for your visit to Iolani Palace:

Electricity and Telephones Did you know Iolani Palace had electricity and telephones four years before the White House? So modern! In 1881, King Kalākaua (who was very interested in technology) went on a world tour. He met with Thomas Edison in NYC and the rest was history! Electric lights were officially installed and turned on at Iolani Palace in 1887.

Quilt There is a very famous quilt (pictured above) made by Queen Liliʻuokalani during her 9 months of imprisonment ( in her own Palace ). One part of the tour takes you into a room that holds the original quilt. It is an intricate patchwork quilt that documents her memories and important events in her life. You can read more about the quilt in this 2003 Star Bulletin article .

American Florentine The architectural style of Iolani Palace is called American Florentine. It is the only example of American Florentine architecture in the world.

Entrance to Iolani Palace.

There are events held throughout the year that you can attend on the Iolani Palace grounds (without needing to book a tour).

Though you can't access the inside of the Palace without a booked tour, you can still enjoy the palace grounds which are quite beautiful!

A popular event this summer is the The Royal Hawaiian Band at Iolani Palace . This takes place most Fridays between 12pm-1pm (make sure to double check schedule/time online ). It's a live band concert held on the palace grounds. The band was founded by King Kamehameha III in 1836. It is the only band in the US with a royal legacy...so cool! Bring a picnic mat and snacks to make it a full experience. Don't forget to wear sunscreen.

P.S. The Royal Hawaiian Band also plays at many venues throughout the island.

Check out the most current events on Iolani Palace's Events page .

Tips and FAQ

There is metered parking available onsite and on nearby streets. Make sure to bring coins. Fill the meter for 2 hours to be on the safe side. Last thing you want is to leave the tour midway to fill up the parking meter.

Dress codes are fairly relaxed in Hawaii, but Iolani Palace requires shirts and footwear. Definitely no bathing suits or beachwear. You are in a palace, after all.

Tours run throughout the day, but we prefer the early morning tours. It can get pretty hot in Hawaii, so if you want a chance to stroll the Palace grounds before/after the tour, it's wise to book for a morning tour.

Iolani Palace is right by Downtown and Chinatown, so there are plenty of good food options. From takeout to sit down, casual to fancy, there's something for every appetite and budget. Here are a few great spots: The Pig and the Lady , Lam's Kitchen (best chow fun dishes and you tiao), Fête , Maguro Brothers (super fresh sashimi on rice), The Daley Burger , and Kahiau Jerky Poke & Provisions (make sure to try the Hapa Poi which layers taro and sweet potato poi).

Iolani Palace

Mizhelle

Looking to pay a visit to the breathtaking Iolani Palace? Whether you’re a Hawaiian resident or just here on holiday, there’s no doubt that the Iolani Palace is a key destination to consider stopping by. We’ve outlined some of the main things you need to know about the Iolani Palace to help you decide whether it’s a worthwhile part of your trip.

Iolani Palace building facade

  • Visit the only royal palace in the United States fully restored to its former grandeur
  • Explore massive rooms, including the state dining room, throne room, and grand hall
  • Discover intimate décor in the king and queen’s suites
  • Learn about the palace grounds and its history as a place of worship

Iolani Palace was built in 1879 as the main royal residence for Kamehameha III and his wife, Queen Consort Kalama Kapakuhaili. Unfortunately, despite the palace’s grandeur and beauty, its life as a working royal home would only be short-lived; by 1893, under the right of Queen Lili’uokalani. At this time, Hawaii’s monarchy was overthrown, so the Iolani Palace was taken by the Provisional Government of Hawaii.

After this move, the palace temporarily became known instead as the “Executive Building of the Republic.” Iolani Palace then remained the home of the Provisional Government until 1969. Thereafter, it was converted into a museum and historical landmark, and restoration works commenced to return it to its former design and style.

After restorative work on the palace was completed, it achieved status as a National Historic Landmark at the end of 1962. Several years later, it was entered into the National Register of Historic Places Listings in Oahu.

Today, the Iolani Palace is open to the public, and the main responsibility for overseeing the palace falls to the Friends of Iolani Palace. However, the palace grounds are under the responsibility of the Hawaii State Department of Land and Natural Resources.

In addition to serving as a museum, the palace occasionally hosts events tied to its history. For example, an observation on the 100th anniversary of the overthrow of the Hawaiian Monarchy.

Tips when Visiting

If you’re planning a visit to the stunning Iolani Palace, you should consider several key tips. Hopefully, the following points may help you make the most of the time.

Dress Respectfully

One of the most important tips you should keep in mind when visiting the Iolani Palace is to dress respectfully. While many people overlook the palace’s cultural significance, the land upon which it was built also holds sacred meaning, and several people have been buried at this location. In line with this, it’s important to dress respectfully during your time at Iolani Palace. Not only is this a sign of respect, but you may be denied access if you do not wear shoe coverings or appropriate dress wear.

Plan According to the Weather

When visiting the Iolani Palace, try to plan your time in accordance with the weather. If it’s sunny, exploring the stunning grounds is well worth a try. However, if the weather isn’t on your side, there are still countless amazing sights to immerse yourself in within the palace itself.

Take Plenty of Pictures

Taking pictures around Iolani Palace is permitted, and this could really make your time even more special. There’s nothing quite the same as having amazing photos and videos to remember your experience by, so we recommend documenting your visit with photo memories to cherish for a lifetime.

But Avoid Flash Photography!

While taking photographs and videos during your time at Iolani Palace is perfectly fine, it’s worth noting that flash photography is not allowed.

Flash photography can potentially damage the displays. As such, it is important to keep in mind that you’ll need to turn off any flash photography on your camera or device if you want to take photos during your visit.

Don’t Miss the Gift Shops

If you want to remember your visit to Iolani Palace even more, visit any of the two amazing gift shops. These gift shops sell a range of great gifts and keepsakes that are the ideal way to help you remember your amazing visit.

The main gift shop is located on the first floor, by the barracks. The gift shop opens until 4 PM every day between Tuesday to Saturday, so there’s plenty of time to stop by – but make sure you plan your day to ensure you have enough time to browse through the collections.

Make the Most of Tours

There’s a lot to see at the Iolani Palace, and with this thought in mind, it is very important that you consider one of the guided tours to really make the most of your time inside. The palace offers guided tours throughout the week, as well as 3D virtual tours and more. These offer an excellent solution to help you make the most of your time and ensure you don’t miss out on any of the amazing sights within the palace walls.

iolani palace audio tour

When it comes to exploring the rich cultural heritage of Hawaii, there is no better place to start than Iolani Palace . Nestled in downtown Honolulu, this historic gem stands as a testament to the grandeur and legacy of the Hawaiian monarchy. Visiting Iolani Palace in Hawaii is a must see stop for families.

Iolani Palace

Continuing our trip in Hawaii on Oahu Island we made a stop at the only official royal residence, Iolani Palace for the audio walking tour. This tour gave us a view of rooms in the palace along with learning about important historical events and the historic people of Hawaii.

Taking a visit to Iolani Palace offers a unique opportunity to delve into the captivating history of the Hawaiian Kingdom. I wanted the kids to have fun and learn some history on this visit and this was the perfect place. The kid’s interest was kept while we went on the self-led audio tour and my whole family enjoyed this stop.

Iolani Palace

What is Iolani Palace?

Iolani Palace is a historic landmark located in downtown Honolulu, Hawaii. It is the only royal palace on U.S. soil and served as the official residence of the Hawaiian monarchs. The Palace was constructed in the late 19th century during the reign of King Kalakaua and completed in 1882. It was named after his predecessor, King Kamehameha III’s hānai (adopted) son, Io-lani, who was also his brother.

Why is Iolani Palace significant?

Iolani Palace is significant for several reasons. It reflects the unique architecture known as American Florentine, blending European and Hawaiian architectural elements. It was one of the most modern and technologically advanced buildings of its time, featuring innovations like indoor plumbing and electricity before even the White House in Washington, D.C.

The palace was not only a residence for Hawaiian royalty but also a center of political and social activity. It hosted grand events, receptions, and diplomatic ceremonies. The royal family resided there until the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom in 1893.

After the overthrow of the monarchy, the palace was used as a government building for many years, and its interiors were modified. However, in the 1970s, a significant restoration effort took place to restore the palace to its original glory. Today, Iolani Palace stands as a museum and historic site. When you visit this national historic landmark it tells the story of the Iolani Palace when their Majesties, King Kalakaua, and his sister and successor, Queen Liliuokalani walked the grand halls.

Is Iolani Palace worth it?

Yes! We took the audio tour and loved it. Not only is the palace a beautiful place just to see the tour provided a lot of historic information and learning for the kids. On the tour, the kids learned about the important historical figures in Hawaii, and the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy, and saw amazing artifacts. The tour was short enough to keep their interest while being informative.

Has anyone done both? Which did you prefer? Thank you!

' class=

I have done both. I enjoyed both. You might learn a little more history and you can ask questions with the docent tour.

Thank you for the advice! :)

You're welcome. It's a wonderful place!!

I did the self-guided audio-tour both times. I liked it because you could go at your own pace, and listen to as much detail (or not) in the various rooms.

You might want to see what reservations you can get. I believe the numbers admited may still be limited due to the pandemic restrictions(?)

iolani palace audio tour

I'm glad you posted this question. We are debating the same options.

iolani palace audio tour

I have done both. While the self guided tour is fine, I far prefer the Docent led tour. The ability to ask questions of the Docent provides an opportunity to learn more and get deeper details into the specific things that draw your interest. For me, this made the Docent tour much more interesting.

My parents did a docent tour last week and RAVED about the tour guide.
